Re: (313) Richie Hawtin's Traktor setup
BMG / Ectomorph. His DJ sets are more like on the fly mashups of Prince, Dan Bell, Carl Craig, P Funk, Laid Back, Kraftwerk and B-52s. 2 Many DJs wish they could hold a torch to what he does with Live with their sets.. but thankfully, everything's already sync'ed within Live. as for Traktor: I have been dabbling with the 4 decks thing but still using turntables for the first 2 tracks and then synching to their master pitch clocks. You can easily start up another deck or two using your other decks' pitch. Sometimes it works, other times not. As good as Traktor is, it's not always making razor-sharp 1/2/4/8-bar loops for you -- I wouldn't rely on it 100% of the time. But it does make DJing a lot more fun than just playing 90% of the song and fading in the ends. ;) +odd -- On Sep 8, 2008, at 3:23 PM, Kowalsky wrote: Well, hawtin seems to do what's possible. Re: (313) juan and kraftwerk (was Re: (313) 313 - T)
Most techno artists / musicians would regard Computer World as more influential than Autobahn. The progression from Autobahn to CW was a great one and made it closer to dance music which was the incubation phase for techno. I think of Autobahn being closer to Neu / Can with synthesizers instead of guitars. Let's not forget that Kool Herc, Whodini, DAF, B-52s, Tom Tom Club, and New Order (amongst many others) were also being played before or the same time as CW. +odd -- On Jun 2, 2008, at 2:47 PM, kent williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Oh please let's not argue this over again. Just because Juan heard Numbers after he started making tracks means nothing. Numbers was on Computer World, which was released in 1982. Computer World was KW's 7th LP. Autobahn had been a hit in the US in 1974. It isn't likely that Juan Atkins was unaware of KW before he made tracks. As to how that awareness influenced him, who knows? KW are a blindingly OBVIOUS purcursor to techno, and one that was, if not ubiquitous on Detroit radio, was certainly hard to avoid completely. howdy people, nice meeting some of you in Detroit for the shirt pickups. sorry I didn't get there until LATE on Saturday [missed first flight of the day by 5 minutes, which made us get into Detroit by 7:50 PM].. As a result, saw only half of DBX, and the first song of Moby .. after I realized it was a ploy for him to keep it real, I left.. Dan's set was dope, a little different than expected - I heard that the 'preview' he did at Bunker / Galapagos was flooring people and it's brevity made it much sweeter. Still, nice to see everything on stage, being used like it should. Rarely do things get this live anymore. Sat. night I did a video / photo loop for the Hi-Tek Soul party w/ Derrick May and Quentin Harris. Rick Wilhite was actually the opening DJ but it was unannounced - I think the turnout would have been different if the heads knew ;) he played some good jams, but I was running on fumes [2 hrs of sleep] and the smell of bad pizza cooking made for an early night. I should have went soul-skating. :( After a late Sunday brunch at Inn Season [vegan brunch, yum, Ferndale], set up camp finally at the Hi-Tek Soul / Spectacles booth. Being relived by the BluBuni crew [thanks guys!!] finally got to see Magda for a bit, everyone seemed pretty out of their mind already. Ran into Rich 'no more turntables' Hawtin [didn't see it, but not surprised, either]... and a few others from Toronto as usual when a M_NUS artist is on. Headed back to the main stage to hear the beginning of Mr. Craig's set. After some interesting, yet repetitive synth burblings, Throw kicked in.. then a few random sax / synth solos, a PROGESSIon into the next song, I found myself moving on. Granted, the last time I saw him live, along, was as BFC 1992. If only we had a time machine. We got out of there fairly quickly -- picked up my gear and headed over to Juan's loft. I wasn't sure what to anticipate because honestly, the party got bumped around.. there was an earlier incarnation of the event which would have featured Egyptian Lover, Buzz Goree, ana+one, and a few others. Then another variation with Lauren Flax, Kimyon, John Arnold, and more. Then the flyer that went to print was Juan, Terrence, DeepChord, myself, Titonton Archetyp. The day of the event, the lineup unveiled to me featured Juan, Titonton, Archetyp, myself, Kimyon, Kenny Black, ana+one, DJ TrainRek and some other guy playing Electro in the other room. No sign of Rod from Deep Chord.. A bit of a whirlwind so we had to keep it all short. I kinda flew through my set after I had all the channels working then proceeded to drop the .xtrak stuff - a little stressed since Dan Bell, Shawn Rudiman, Aaron Bennett, Juan and the crew were all right there.. played some new stuff that will be out later in the fall, including some new vocal / .xtrak things.. Juan went on, I took a breather, came back, listened to Kimyon, then finally took off around 6 am or so. was so out of it I drove around in circles for another 30 min trying to get back to the Motor City hotel. Monday - started the day off with a visit to the crackden known as Old Miami. Wow, what a sight.. people in various stages of ecstacy [literally] and fatigue as things were wearing off or kicking in. Ryan Elliott, Ryan Crosson and Troy Pierce were at their usual duties, saw a bunch of other heads as well, some people definitely looked like they were up past their bedtime... After listening to various drum patterns run through Live's Delay plugins for hours, finally moved over to the fest.. got the shirts to some more people [thank you Bonnie, Jwan, Kim, Fred, Monica, Thomas, Tim, et all for passing the word along!] They were still a hit amongst the non-nerds like us.. ;) Harassed Sam Valenti VI for a good hour, tried to find his helicopter's on switch to give some much needed circulation in the Ghostly tent, meandered over to Cobblestone Jazz which actually lived up to their rep for the name [unlike the records]... Missed Derek Plaslaiko and what I heard was an amazing set by Josh Wink.. heard a few minutes of Dubfire [a certain public enemy song comes to mind], then checked out Kevin Saunderson for a while. Despite the ravers [does anyone know what these people do for a living, aside from raving professionally?], he played some tough tunes, yet I have no idea what the interface was [guessing Traktor, but I never saw his hands on the decks or CDJ - just the mixer only]... regardless he seemed to be having the time of his life. Around 12 AM motivated out of the hotel to The Works, for a few hours of Dan Zip dropping one dope track after another.. there were rumours of some guests but the first room didn't open up.. An enjoyable time and great place to recap with a nightcap. ;) I left at 4 AM, on a plane by 6:30 AM. Ugh. But well worth it. some documentation.

And of course Punisher has always been good when I've seen her, and remember she stood well above the relentless mediocrity at the underground stage one year. My bigger problem is the continuing de-focus on Detroit in the lineup. Yes, there are some Detroit area artists on the list, and good for them, but overall it just doesn't have the breadth and depth it should given who's within local driving distance of the festival. And this isn't just conjecture about what it could be, it's about what it was when you go back and look at the first couple of years. fh

Daniel Bell is considered to be one of the pioneers of the minimal techno genre. Born in Sacramento, California, Bell grew up outside of Toronto, and later moved to Detroit where he collaborated with Richie Hawtin as Cybersonik for three years on Plus 8 records. In 1991, he started his own label, Accelerate, where he released a string of extremely influential releases as DBX. Bell was influenced primarily by Chicago House as well as the works of Steve Reich and Philip Glass. His productions are characterized by minimalist house grooves accented by blips and bleeps. Some tracks also feature bizarre voice effects and eerie atmospherics such as Losing Control, which caused a sensation when released in 1994. In the mid to late 90's Bell moved behind the scenes to create 7th City Distribution which exclusively pressed and distributed Robert Hood's M-plant, Dopplereffekt's Dataphysix and Anthony Shakir's Frictional record labels, to name a few. He also launched Elevate, Harmonie Park and relaunched 7th City Records. Debut releases on these labels helped kick start the music careers of Todd Sines, Rick Wade, Theo Parrish and Shawn Rudiman among others. In 2000, he relocated to Berlin, Germany, and released his first dj mix CD, The Button-Down Mind of Daniel Bell, on Tresor Records to wide critical acclaim. 2003 brought a follow-up release on Logistic records, The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back, and soon after a retrospective cd of older work was released: Blip, Blurp, Bleep: The Music of Daniel Bell. For the past few years Daniel has kept a heavy dj schedule that has brought him all over the world. He is currently taking some time to focus on his live set, which will premier sometime this year. I thought the photos were funny. apparently no one has a sense of humor. When I had a hard drive lost / stolen / missing from a gig here in NYC about a year ago, I was like, oh well, f*ck it. Brooklyn Vegan and the 20,000 MD fans didn't come to the rescue, or bring justice to it either. Would be nice to have it.. but I knew I should have it backed up as well. Losing things sucks, I agree, but it's also part of the job - can't really say that security for DJs is a priority at most venues I've been to. +odd -- On Apr 11, 2008, at 5:42 AM, Martijn de Blaauw wrote: Check and yes unfortunately, if it would happen to Claude Young, Theo Parrish or UR this list would have screamed fire and would have gone after the peeps who did this themselves... Re: (313) monolake
I will second the motion for Monolake. Although I prefer the soundscapes created by listening to albums like Gravity, Gobi: The Desert, Interstate, and Hongkong... he's a brilliant sound designer, and I continually get lost in the spaces he [re]creates. He's obviously spent time in the D when you hear Interstate -- it feels like the soundtrack to the oil processing plants near the Southfield exit on I-75 South. Some of his music almost approaches DB / 2-step with his programming, but he's also into 4/4 stuff and just about everything in between. Yet he continually makes it all very listenable. And for what it is, incredibly funky.. He's also a tall, funny German [usually, an oxymoron], a gear nerd [http://www.monolake.de/studio/], who, with Gerhard Behles, just so happened to have conceived one of the best software apps in the last 10 years, and actually can crack a smile as well. +odd -- On Apr 8, 2008, at 1:02 PM, Greg Earle wrote: Arturo Lopez wrote: It's hit or miss, but like Matt said, other people remixing his music is usually quite good. (313) Paxahau [was Re: (313) DEMF some names announced finally]
On 4 deadlines so I'll try to keep this brief. Paxahau have technically been down since 1992/1993. the Jasons [Clark and Huvaere] have been promoting stuff in DOWNTOWN Detroit for as long as I can remember. I met them either the first or second time I was there... maybe it was Journey to the Hardcore II at Majestic, Dec 31 1992? [BFC live, Inner City live, Altern 8 live, Jeff Mills, Eddie Flashin' Fowlkes, Rob Hood and a few others. not a bad party]. Other promoters like Poor Boy [Dot, Jon Santos, Brian Gillespie], Voom [Steven Raume, Eric, etc], and Syst3m [Dean] were also instrumental in doing parties, but to be honest, almost all of these people were from nearby suburbs like Warren, Royal Oak, Ferndale, Troy, Hamtramck, etc. Paxahau were first really known as Richie's cult, kinda because they all were shaving their heads. I was too, but it was because I had hair down past my chin, I mistakenly tried to do dreadlocks my freshman year at OSU, it didn't work, so I shaved it. Thankfully it all grew back in mid 1995. They had a loft space at 1217 Woodward for a few years and it was the site of many a loft party - I played in late 1993 as a guest with D. Wynn and I'm honored to have had the induction / introduction to Detroit through them, by way of Brian Gillespie, Dot, Paris da Black Fu and Jon Santos.. They were also part of the +8 crew and helped do production for many of Richie's legendary Heaven Hell parties from 1993-1995. Then they started streaming shows from their ionized basement in Ferndale, and organizing events at Motor, Panacea, and the Masonic Temple. They are definitely bringing something to the table, whether you like it or not. They're historically speaking not representing the blackest side of Detroit, but they have respect for all of Detroit's flavors of talent, and they are a little more business-minded than some of the other promoters / festival organizers in the past. I think if they didn't step up to the plate last year, we might not have a festival this year. I trust that they will deliver a good show, regardless of what you think of all of the talent; there's still always something for everyone and at least, you don't have to clone yourself and try to see 4 stages at once; maybe you can sleep in, go visit the city, eat something, or have time to complain about it online here. +odd -- On Mar 26, 2008, at 12:16 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Well, that's just it isn't it - the suburbanites I've read Paxahau being described as the suburban promoters Can anyone give some history/background on Paxahau? There was easily 400 people standing outside waiting to get in. That's very untypical of Detroit events. I mean, those numbers do happen, my event Dec 30th had over 450 people through the door, but I also had 3 rooms with 10 artists on the bill. More than 400 people for one Electronic Music Artist... thats really rare in this city... so as much as I cringed when I saw his name on the bill, from a business standpoint, it makes sense to put him on, cos he will draw a large crowd of Detroit (most likely) suburbanites. being a vegan foodie my biggest things are finding actual good food to eat while in the D. so. can't forget Avalon Bakery! Cass Ave right by Planet E. lots of vegan carbohydrate delights there and the best coffee in Detroit [organic, fair trade] Blue Nile - Ferndale, MI - a staple of techno tourists - prix fixe, but don't order more than necessary because you can't take it with you Oslo [walking distance, Woodward] - there will probably be plenty of parties there, of course Royal Oak - Beirut Palace for their delish falafel, hummus and their big fat juicy fatoosh... and orange / carrot juices [yum!] La Shish - in Dearborn [if you're passing by the airport] or Warren if you're near Roseville Record Time Sala Thai - in the burbs on Lafayette near Woodward - and buy some Gap t-shirts while you're at it Marathon - cheap ethiopian in Windsor, ON - might be easier / cheaper to take the bus from there. Don't take a German techno artist [Monolake], a man of Arabic descent [Sharif], a white girl [---], a Filipino girl [---], a white guy that got turned away at the border [me] and a black guy [Archetype] without a passport or ID through the border and expect not to be hassled. If memory serves me right, there's some indian food to be had downtown, but I only stumbled into it and have yet to see it in the last 2 years for some reason. Re: (313) RE: T-shirt design.
PS - If you're interested in buying one, please email me off list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a quantity and I'll try to figure out how much to print up. Shipping won't be included. Will get costs for a 2-sided and 1-sided shirt. Ultimately they will both be on black. Color palette for 1-sided is Cyan white on black, 2-sided is green dayglo fluorescent orange on black. [I am gunning for this one because it will be PHAT. ha ha. Will ultimately print up more than necessary and sell them at the Festival for a very nice price. +odd -- On Mar 5, 2008, at 12:19 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I definitely want one. that's the thing - the reason for the big shift in advertising towards viral + branded content. The success of BMW Films as not only a brand but a story - to make it be intertwined in your lives.. that's exactly what they're after. As many grumps that are on this list [myself included] they're still highly influential - even if the one someone you respect or admire says one line - it's enough to persuade. let's also not forget my adidas by Run DMC - wonder if that was a giant commercial? or just a true love? Do a search for Nike.. or adidas tattoos on google and see what you find. kinda sick. I highly doubt the shoe companies paid them... I admit I looked at it and was actually happy that Adidas got behind it instead of someone else. I'm still fighting with whether to loathe or love them but I think they give the appearance of being better than say ... n*ke? I've been more of an adidas kinda person only because I could find entirely synthetic, non-animal based shoes.. for me - sustainability + green is the next step for any company and adidas, with their support of things like Stella McCartney - an avid vegan / and against animal products - for me it's one of the only companies on a large scale that understands the balance between style + sustainability. +odd -- On Feb 14, 2008, at 12:17 PM, Nik Stoltzman wrote: A couple of thoughts: I sincerely doubt that the 313 mailing list demographic is sufficiently lucrative to warrant creating a specific viral marketing campaign for. So Adidas have generated a lot of discussion (never bad) and perhaps even earned some grudging respect (also good for them) but I for one will not find myself in a sports shop thinking huh, maybe I should by this Adidas branded product because they are down with tha D. But then, virals aren't supposed to work like that as far as I understand it. Do you remember DJ Super Greg? There was NO indication in that video that it was anything to do with Jeans (wasn't it Lee or something?). It's convincing K, but ask yourself the reason they've take the route they have and if you believe there's any love for you in the boardroom of any PLC then I'd say that was a tad naive, these people don't know as you suggest - they pay people who tell them what they know. m

it went well - I believe they recorded it. Re: (313) what ever happened to Daniel Lui/Chair Recordings?
Don't think there are any new Chairs on the horizon -- Charles + I were on the very last electro one.. I believe Dan has focused on being a school teacher during the week and still dabbles in music occasionally, but no longer the main thing. The closing of Roundtable Distribution [Dave Cooper from Play De Record] of course didn't help; it had a lot to do with many of the labels from the midwest [21/22 + Glyph being a few of the others] having to either stop, or move elsewhere [Public Transit Recordings, It Is What It Is].. +odd -- On Feb 4, 2008, at 1:12 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I came across some of his records and I recall them being fairly decent. His post punk, industrial, and hip-hop upbringings, filtered through an obsession with analogue and early digital technology, resulted in stripped down electronic funk; before minimal was mnml -- it was just effective. Through his techno band, Body Release, with key Ohio players Titonton Duvanté, Charles Noel [Archetyp] and Mike Szewczyk, they dabbled in early rave sounds before embarking on their own paths. Todd's introduction in early 1993 to Detroit's Carl Craig and Daniel Bell resulted in seminal releases with Peacefrog, Planet E and 7th City by year end. Catching the ear of Richie Hawtin, boiling point, as .xtrak was featured on his debut mix CD in 1995 on Mixmag. Soon after, releases on Andy Vaz's Background Records, Charles' 21/22 Corp, and Titonton's own Residual brought his sound to house, electro and techno aficionados worldwide. Since his move to New York in 2003, he's worked with a variety of other artists, including !!!, Death in Vegas, Liquid Liquid's Sal Principato; he's remixed Alexander Robotnick, Paul Randolph, Robert Owens, Moonstarr, Savas Pascalidis, Lanoiraude and more. With his new material with Natacha Labelle on Frankie, he pushes the boundaries of house music, and with the resurrection of his .xtrak alias on YORE, his return to jackin' minimal funk reminds people of where it all started. recent live set: http://www.toddsines.com/music/mp3/todd_sines/live_sets/ ToddSines_LiveShanti_Moscow.mp3 recent DJ sets http://www.toddsines.com/mixes/toddsines_moskow20071215-204.mp3 http://www.toddsines.com/mixes/BuzzinMix_04_04May2007.mp3 sites: http://www.toddsines.com/ http://www.myspace.com/toddsines releases + reviews http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/browse/album/?id=1892 http://www.whatpeopleplay.com/browse/album/?id=3290 http://www.wordandsound.de/article/51482 http://www.wordandsound.net/article/44925 thanks for reading down this far.. ;) +odd
Re: (313) Digital Djing
I already feel kinda sick spending half of this morning defending digital music for DJs.. but, anyway... In regard to memory and recognition of objects - I would imagine that the more factors you have to help with recall the better. You don't have time for auditory so we pretty much have only some sort of visual recognition to rely on. Symbols (artwork/logos, etc), colour (artwork, center labels, etc.), and text all help I'm not a neurologist but I'd assume that the more flags you are given to use as tools of memory the easier and faster, an possibly more, recall you will have I agree, I think that of course, there's an attachment to vinyl or a physical object because of the artwork + packaging.I think there's plenty of artwork that either misses the mark, or perhaps incorrectly allows for judging a book by its cover. Either because of age, limited resources, or general disregard for design / marketing / packaging; some people care more about it than others. There's plenty of labels that have succeeded by merit of it's cover art [sometimes alone], and those who have done the least amount of work as possible [4th generation photocopies from some crap at Kinko's] that have music that'd run circles around the highest designed sleeves. Which might be better suited in a design gallery, the pages of Grafik [as they usually are] or an Art Director's Club book. I've bought records just on the merit of their covers alone, only to find that's it's not worth playing the record anyway.. The lack of attention to these things becomes the aesthetic; non- design becomes a form of design. Why fetishize over these things when our previous argument was about the sound of vinyl -- clearly a stronger argument than liking the pretty [ugly] pictures.. If you've seen Titonton, you know that he has a disregard for both the record sleeves and quality, if we define it as superior fidelity, scratch-free vinyl quality; He hasn't a record cover in his bag, and rarely has any paper sleeves either; only going by paper labels alone; not to mention that everything is so incredibly scratched, that the quality gain from playing vinyl is deteriorated by playing records with scratches, pops, and diminished high- frequencies.. On Jan 3, 2008, at 12:05 PM, Benoît Pueyo wrote: Currently involved in a (free) netlabel, I have in focus to launch its vinyl brother. My initial concept was to sell music on the web and provide (for free) the vinyl copy to the 500 first ones that have bought the EP in mp3. After having talked with some professionnals the main issue is that an online mp3 store wont give you the IDs of the buyers and their address, as for them keeping secret all this data is very important for their business. this would be great; I was actually thinking the opposite; selling vinyl with one-time only download codes for digital quality WAV / AIF masters; however I think I'm in the minority on this one.. But that's not the point of your dicussion, as you were asking for economical issues. The cost of a record is about 2€ / 2.5 € depending on manufacturer+mastering price / quality for around 500 copies. So theoritically it is economically possible to press some records once sold the same amount of 'digitial record' meaning at least 2 tracks / record @ 2 € each one. This business model has its limit when : - The label / the artists wanna earn money. This may be important for 'prfessionnals'. #1 most heated topic; Labels: want / need to make their money off artists' sales; whether it be via digitally or physical sales; licensing, or touring; labels have no business if there's no artists making them money.. view the relationships of Warp and Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Autechre, etc; they have other avenues to peddle their music, but Warp stands behind their decisions as artists and both benefit greatly from the situation; same with Ghostly and Matthew Dear; I think the label's commitment to Matthew shows in his publicity and ubiquity with the press and fans; if Matthew wasn't around, it might be a different story. Artists: in the past, _needed_ labels to get their music out there, in the stores, on the air, in the hands of the right DJs; now they finally have a way to side-step the need for a label [like Prince, Radiohead, etc.] and do it themselves; however realizing how tough of a market it is to run a small label; I think most artists who sell say, less than 5-10k of anything already know that releasing records is more like an expensive greeting card; it reminds people you're still around and that you are available to DJ / play live, or do remixes. Even C2, just nominated for a Grammy for like a child knows that the dance album often turns into something that we might not want; an accessible, for the masses album suitable for either lounging at home, or playing at a restaurant, or background music for some
Re: (313) Digital Djing
as an avid vinyl collector for the last 20+ years, [who also made the mistake of buying entire catalogues of some labels on cassette, sadly].. I originally thought I'd hate to use a digital imitation of the real thing. Especially from the packaging perspective [which led me into being a director anyway, by way of 4AD and Factory's stellar album artwork] At one point, Dan Bell + I spoke of being able to download music and play it that night; but we didn't expect it to be MP3's; rather, we thought the Vestax personal record lathe would actually allow you to cut your own masters and play them.. ha. But then record sales became harder for most of the world, not just those who buy the records and play them at clubs; the vinyl plants in the US were shutting down left and right, and it became increasingly difficult to get quality vinyl manufactured here in the US. Unfortunately, I fell into the same pitfalls as the rest of us, got lazy, and started writing most of my music on the laptop and using a breakout box to mix it down.. Somehow, with the advent of using Logic, Live, I downloaded / traded / bought stuff from anywhere and everywhere, promo packs from labels, sharing vinyl RIPs with friends, buying stuff from Beatport, Stompy, Classic / MumboJumbo, Word and Sound; [I do feel like I did my share of supporting the vinyl community, with about 5,000 records, old + new]... Now, as I tour, playing live and DJing often in the same night, I've been trying to find the right solution for a gig, and for me playing music digitally [still controlled by vinyl control records] is the way to go for me; with the NI Traktor Scratch + Audio 8 DJ interface I'm able to not only play a sh*tload of different music, faster, and 3-4 tracks at a time, but can also switch into doing a live set; play loops while DJing, and add effects to the mix and move music forward in another direction.. I used to use Serato + a Presonus Firebox [for the live set] but as soon as Audio 8 came out, I dropped it, for a box that did not only MIDI + audio I/O but would allow me to DJ with the same hardware as well.. and now I can bring more hardware to play live with, which as a musician, is more important to have more tone control and knobs, than a few more pieces of often one good side only vinyl... Just because you use Serato / FS2 / DJDecks / Traktor, doesn't mean you have to play mnml or hip-hop only these days.. [as the case often is in NYC] and you can have your friends bring a Flash drive and DJ with you.. or add stuff at the last second to your collection. I don't want to kill vinyl, but I'm recognizing that us dinosaurs might be among the last few that still hold on.. I've been to parties [and played clubs] where there's no freaking 1200's in sight.. just CDJs! somehow, I hope that people still recognize the value of the mediums [visual + aural] and what they are _ALL_ good for... +odd -- On Jan 2, 2008, at 5:51 PM, ben thompson wrote: i have used Final Scratch 2 for the past 2 years, to some success. however, i am still not able to play a proper, balls out set with it. not because the tunes are not there, but because:- 1. the sound quality is not an iota on vinyl 2. i agree with senor Francis on the covers thing. much easier to pick and choose in the heat of the moment, through sight of and feel of the vinyl and covers. 3. although much lighter and much less fuss than vinyl, i love vinyl and FS2 has not given me any better alternative. having said that, it does allow me to play new stuff that i, or flat mate, has written that afternoon. and not dub plate it. so in that respect, it is a useful tool sorry, but same old argument... vinyl rules Ben.T On 2 Jan 2008, at 20:34, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: When I first read this I thought yes I'm sure that's absolutely right. It's not the only way you could do that though - i.e. I don't just want to do it this way because it's what I'm used to. I can think of other things. In fact the covers thing would not be as good as a gadget that quickly previewed in the headphones how a load of alternative tracks would sound mixing out of the one playing. That was when his alias was .xtrak, and he was co-producing with minimal techno luminary and regular Bunker guest Daniel Bell. Around this time, he also released a track as Enhanced on Carl Craig's Planet E label. So Todd obviously impressed the right people to get his career launched. Music kind of took a back seat in his life for a few years, but he returned with an album on Residual in 1999. In 2002, Sines once again released on Planet E, this time under his own name with Natacha Labelle on vocals. This single was very well received by everyone in the techno, house, and broken beat scenes. Now, Sines is on fire again with a string of new releases. After laying the .xtrak project to rest for over a decade, it has come back to life in 2007, with a 7th City reissue of an early rare track, and brand new material released as the first 12 on Andy Vaz's new Yore imprint. He also released a single on Frankie early this year that really turned heads and got played quite a bit at the Bunker, with a remix 12 due soon. Despite being our buddy for a long time, Todd has never made a proper solo live appearance at the Bunker (he played downstairs with Archetyp at the Monolake show at Tonic). In any case, we've loved his music for over a decade, and are really excited to finally have him play it live for us. With a musical history spanning back to 1991, as co-creator of the seminal techno band Body Release (alongside Todd Sines, Charles Noel and Mike Szewczyk), and on through a multifaceted career as a composer, recording artist, producer, remixer, record label owner and DJ, Titonton Duvante continues to evolve creatively. As a DJ known for blurring the boundaries of electronic music genres, Titonton deconstructs, blends and rebuilds beats with his special brand of funky turntablism. He's brought his extraordinary style to nightclubs around the world: from Detroit and San Francisco to Berlin, London, Paris, Warsaw, Copenhagen, Sao Paulo, San Juan, Tokyo and beyond. Titonton has released an arsenal of music on labels such as Palette, Environ, 7th City, Planet E, Sonar Kollektiv, 2000 Black and Bitasweet to name a few, in addition to his own label, Residual Recordings. He's done collaborative work with contemporaries such as John Tejada, Fabrice Lig and Morgan Geist. Titonton's remarkable reputation has earned him an entry in Tim Barr's book, A Rough Guide to Techno, as well as a mention in Dan Sicko's book, Techno Rebels. Recently moving to New York City from his native Columbus, Ohio, Titonton has been working in the studio, with forthcoming releases on Residual, 7th City, Designforms, Manuscript and Frankie Recordings. (313) RELEASE. this Friday in Columbus / Sunday in Cleveland
Body Release was the band that Titonton Duvante, Charles Noel [Archetyp / Monochrome], Mike Szewczyk [Bath / Txtbeak] and myself formed in 1991.. quickly cashing in on the sounds of Rhythm is Rhythm, Underground Resistance, NJOI, Cabaret Voltaire's Colours EP, LFO, 808 State, Shades of Rhythm, Altern 8, Nitzer Ebb, Meat Beat Manifesto and I guess Moby + the Prodigy [a very small amount] We played raves throughout the midwest from 1991-1993 and had such glorious moments like driving to the middle of nowhere for a rave in what we think was Wisconsin, being headliners in Ft. Wayne, Indiana to a crowd of goth kids, and opening for Bizarre Inc. Although we never had a formal release as b|re, we did manage to escape getting sponsored by Fresh Jive + Split. They were after us. In May 1993, I gave my 1 pair of phat pants to Damian Higgins. We broke the band up and instantly became ele_mental [then evolved into Firexit and compound]; for the following 14 years there was host of parties + events in Columbus / Dayton / Cleveland / Detroit that we became involved in, hosting notables such as Juan Atkins, Dan Bell, Carl Craig, Claude Young, Shake, Dan Curtin, Paul Johnson, Rolando, Boo Williams, Morgan Geist, Dego, Mike Grant, Glenn Underground, Paris da Black Fu, Moonstarr, Dave Cooper, Brian Gillespie, Billeebob, and many, many others, yes, including Dieselboy™. Our guests of honor included some people you may have heard of like Richie Hawtin and Mad Mike Banks. We are doing a very, very special engagement at BOMA [Bar of Modern Art] this Friday, 21 Dec 2007 in Columbus; the first reunion of the 4 of us playing live, WITH HARDWARE, together again and a DJ tag team full of crispy cymbals and Johnny Cuts by Titonton, Charles, and Todd. should have warned you about Love. sick booth + sound system but inversely proportionate to the vibe. there is a long list of ex-party throwers at Love that will ultimately be the downfall of the place. I will never go back. in regards to the way they run things.. a place done right, like Cielo, does the standard 10-4 thing.. local warmups early, headliner around 12:30-2 and someone closing out the night. Love will start late and go late. people go there when they want to keep going. and it's built for that kind. after going out from 1991-now I can say I am indeed too old for that sort of thing. if it's consistency, go to Cielo, Sullivan Room, Element, Galapagos on Fridays... check rhythmism.com for more info. +odd -- On Aug 9, 2007, at 10:36 AM, Michael Kuszynski wrote: Sweeet! Re: (313) Carl Craig :: The Workout --- more like Live / mastering / blah blah blah
I use unstretched WAVs + AIFs, so it never gets run through Live's Warping engine. It's basically working as a VST / AU wrapper. I could be doing it with Peak or Sound Forge but I don't. A lot easier to keep track of 20 songs on a compilation CD by copying effects settings to each track, isolating and rendering that track separately for mastering. I've had enough history with audio [20 years] to know whether or not something is getting mangled by Live, and so far.. it hasn't. Otherwise I'd tell Robert. I will raise the issue with him so that they are aware of it... if they already don't know [doubt that]. Listen to the Death in Vegas Fabric mix and tell me if it sounds like it was run out of Live. Everything was recorded via a Presonus Firestation and back. Same with my Frankie EP.. final output was from Live [after importing recorded tracks from Logic / outboard gear]. +odd -- /0 wrote: lol, Live is absolutely inappropriate for mastering tracks. Re: (313) Carl Craig :: The Workout
He probably engineered it himself though... Mastering is usually handled by the label to give it a second listen with fresh ears. I engineered the Death in Vegas mix for Richard Fearless for Fabric. Levels were adjusted by me and then adjusted again by the mastering facility that Fabric uses. They hear stuff you don't after listening to it over and over. I highly recommend that you let a mastering facility have the final say vs. the artist, because you become so attached and used to things, it's hard for you to think outside of it. I also do some compilation CD mastering and import all of the CD tracks into Live, use a multi-band compressor on it all, match the levels from song to song and normalize it. Haven't had a complaint yet. now, as for getting on the microphone and adding to all of the tracks your own MC'ing... that is another story. +odd PS: http://www.toddsines.com/ ... new reviews of the new release on Frankie PPS: playing in Chicago next Wednesday 07 Feb, available Thurs + Friday .. plus also booking European tour dates for April + May now. and dates for Asia in July. get in touch: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Matt Kane's Brain wrote: In any case, Carl Craig didn't master this so it's a silly reason not to buy his mixes. for future reference Dave... Fridays at Subtonic [The Bunker ... http://www.klever.org/thebunkernyc ] still seems to be the best fun in town. The five of us got there early and luckily avoided the $15 admission (saved $75) The Sullivan Room is closing for a bit to do some renovations, I think a new sound system is on order. So this was billed as a pre-renovation blowout bash. There were even 2-1 drinks till midnight...sounds pretty good right? The unfortunate thing about it was everyone who spun sucked. It could be I'm suffering the let down from expecting too much. The opening dj's; Function (Infrastructure), Victor Ridi Fong (Minitek), Sleepy Boo (Basic NYC) played not one interesting track. The sets sounded like a mix of minimal tracks from the sale bin and a few old Transmat and Rob Hood numbers thrown in because Stacey was there. I was ready to leave more than an hour before Stacey started. But I decided to stick with it and have another drink. (more alchol seemed to help) 'Do NOT miss this rare NYC visit from the techno innovator on this very special night.' Said the flyer. As soon as Stacey took to the decks, I thought finally, amateur hour is over. Stacey started with a vocal sample of a guy talking about soul. Good sign eh? Well that was the last bit of soul I heard in the half hour before I gave up. Maybe it was that Stacey forget to restock his record bag with something new and ditch the pounding NYC house tracks circa 2000. Reguardless the New York University frat kids who showed up seemed to like it. Hope that gives you an indication of where the bar was set. I would have been mad if I'd parted with the $15 to get in, instead it was rather sad that there is still such a shortage of challenging and INNOVATIVE music in NYC. -dave -- Todd Sines director + SCALE: http://www.scale.gs/ +1.646.330.4873 studio 195 Chrystie St. #403A, NY, NY 10002 // connecting the space between + within.

Re: (313) Detroit... how did it go?
hi everyone [this was supposed to go out yesterday ] I applaud the crew of the Jason's [Huveare, Clark, Simon -- are there any more?] and Chuck Flask and the rest of the Paxahau crew for giving it a go. After going to all but one of the DEMFs, I am happy to say that I was at the fest -- for support of them and the music in general. I don't know if the programming [or diversity of it] worked for some of us, especially those of us playing at or hitting the numerous after parties [Carl Craig opening on Sunday? Adam Marshall from 2-3? I slept til 5 on Monday.] Considering Paxahau's history dating back to 1993 [1217, anyone?], we can't expect much else that speaks to this kind of lineup -- with Richie closing the night and half of Germany on the lineup. They brought some true gems and surprises to the weekend with The Orb and Nitzer Ebb [playing to a backup tape like they did when I last saw them in 1990, right?] Anyone in their position is going to be unbiased with their choices of artists + programming [much of it has to do with coordinating after parties around acts that will already be in town for the fest, which, of course, Paxahau has a vested interest in]. When it was in the hands of Derrick, Carl, or Kevin, it ended up echoing their musical tastes and preferences [albeit a bit wider in scope than this year's lineup]. We all have our wishlists of talent to be heard at the festival -- while some were amped to see Photek or the Orb on the lineup, others would have been excited see something more avant or no-wave in nature such as Tortoise or Liquid Liquid [nice ones]. Somewhat household name hip hop acts like the Roots, Slum Village, Mos Def, etc. always seem to bring together the factions of deep soul and sterile techno somehow when presented in the lineup [deny it or not, they have a lot do with one another than you might admit]. A main stage performance by someone of this size might have helped balance the sound, diversity, and attendance for this year. There were moments [Saturday night] where we would go from stage to stage searching for something OTHER than minimal techno [and I've been making the sh*t for years!]... sometimes you just have to let go I am happy to hear the Jason + the crew of Paxahau will be signing another contract for producing next year's fest. I hope that they do a little more digging in the local talent pool, and also expand their scope to include more aspects of electronic music [afro house, no wave, disco / electro house, etc... ] in the future. ps. nice meeting some of you there [Tom] and seeing you again [Minto, Fred H + G, etc.] next year! +odd -- Thomas D. IIRC the demographics have never attributed more than 10% to foreign travellers in past years (unless you count the Canadians, who obviously don't count ;). i wasnt just implying that it was the people from europe/uk/australia/asia(i didnt see hardly any japanese cats, and i see lots of those guys every year!) but anyone from outside of the detroit area. it seems like paxahau has the detroit region's minimal techno scene on lock. those guys dont care about seeing detroit people, they want to see out of town deejays and artists. the people from out of town want to see detroit artists. POTD are on tour constantly, why drive to detroit to see them when you can just wait till they show up in your town? tom -- Todd Sines director + SCALE: http://www.scale.gs/ +1.646.330.4873 studio 195 Chrystie St. #403A, NY, NY 10002 // connecting the space between + within.
