Re: (313) Christian Morgenstern dead
I'm writing a news item about this very unfortunate occurrance and whilst looking Morgenstern up saw him named as a member of Kitbuilders. He's also said to have recorded as Benway, Human Target and Visco Space. Can anyone confirm any of this? Any other known identities/collaborations? I'd like to have my facts straight for this, but am on deadline. Thanks in advance, TOM
(313) five days off in Berlin
I'm off to Berlin next week to attend Musik Maschine and staying for the whole Love Parade weekend. I wondered if any Berliners on the list might be able to suggest some cool things to see and do while I'm in town - not to mention any parties they could recommend. I have visited the city before so I'm maybe looking for slightly less obvious suggestions than, say, Tresor and the Brandenburg Gate! :-) Markets, music and clothes shops, interesting districts, monuments, exhibitions, bars, restaurants etc etc, all and any suggestions will be gratefully received. Cheers! TOM

Re: (313) Wild Planet
He's still in Sweden and may be resurfacing soon: a guy I know travels there a lot and told me recently 'We've found Wild Planet!'. Apparently he works in a record shop and hasn't donne much recording for ages, but might be tempted out of 'retirement' in the coming months. He also recorded as Feedback, btw, and released a could of great twelves under that name on the now-defunct Brute label. Definitely one of the UK's most underrated talents. Btw., Wild Planet is Simon Hartley, he's from the UK, and Transmitter was recorded in Stockholm - he lived in Sweden (Swedish Techno? ; p ) at the time, or still does, I don't know. So, anyone have an update on him?

Re: (313) introducing... Sturmey Archer
It's a cover of 'Shack Up', not a remix, and was on their FACT2002 EP on Optimo Singles Club records, alongside a great version of 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and one of Section 25 'Looking From A Hilltop'. Every time I play 'Love...' people come up and ask about it. Think the EP might be hard to find now, but try the Optimo site for starters. Bis, in the meantime, have announced they're splitting and recently did a farewell tour. There's a Bis site somewhere, have a search. Their version of 'Shack Up' is also on a US-only EP they did which also had remixes by Adult, Ectomorph and Tommie Sunshine and is well worth finding for anyone who likes a bit of pop with their electro. (313) Lab Rat XL (Was : New Drexciya album out!)
I'm a bit late to 'pipe up' on this, having not checked the list for a few days, but I can't claim credit for that bit of misinformation, I'm afraid. It was my Slut colleague RHJ (Richard Hector Jones) who got PP Roy and Drexciya mixed up, not me. I'm pretty certain the two are unconnected, aside from both having released on Rephlex, of course. So, Ken, back to the pipe for you! :-) For the record, I'd have to agree that the Grava 4 LP on Clone was a weak Drexciya release and the first Transllusion LP on Supremat didn't really do it for me either. But I think Shifted Phases 'Rupert J..' and the 2nd Transllusion LP ('LIFE' on Rephlex) are both excellent. Must try and check both these new ones. Cheers! TMF Robert Taylor: PP Roy? Are you sure that's Drexciya? Ken: I'm getting my info on that from a TMF review of PP Roy - Seven Up (Warp) late 02 in Jockey Slut. He identified it as Stinson. If I'm smoking crack on this, I'm sure, TMF will er, pipe up.
Re: (313) Sonar...
I always think the Sonar line-ups are odd, to be honest. Looking at the list below, and leaving aside those car thieves ON, you might wonder why has-beens Underworld are in there, for example. Or Fat Truckers? Or Darren Price? He's been so low-profile the last few years I thought he'd retired. Then you always seem to get the same old big DJ names playing - Mills, Garnier, Hawtin, Cox, Peterson etc - who although they're all good DJs in their different ways, are hardly going to be much of an event to the people attending. I reckon they all just like the festival so much they're willing to drop their prices to play there every year. But Robert is right, it's the little known acts, along with all the other parties and just the general atmosphere of the festival and the beauty of Barca, that are the best reasons for going. I'd love to go again but once again, lack of funds prevents it. Re: (313) Madonna - Detroit
Someone actually wrote to me offlist, saying it's unethical to post about a non-techno Detroit artist, and I take that point, and felt momentarily chastised I don't think you should feel chastised, Cyclone - this is the 313 list, not a solely Detroit techno list. Eminem, MC5, White Stripes, they're all valid subjects for discussion here AFAIK. Incidentally I hear there is an Octave One remix of the new Massive Attack single. Anyone know anything more? I have it, it's called 'Butterfly Caught'. It's a nice groove, but not much more. It comes with two downtempo Paul Daley mixes, but none of them have a vocal. Anyone know if there was a vocal on the MA original? I presume not but if there was, why dump it? I never understand it when remixers do that. TOM NP: John Tejada Arian Leviste: Fairfax Sake
(313) Fw: New Robert Hood Album
Artist: Robert Hood Title: Wire To Wire Label: Peacefrog Format : 2x12 / CD Cat Number: PFG042 / PFG042CD Release date: 30 June 2003 From the opening bars of 'Make A Wish', the lead track on Robert Hood's new long player 'Wire To Wire', you know you're in for a musical treat. Robert's long association with the 'minimal sound' is well documented, and rightly so - his 'Minimal Nation' release on Axis is still considered the benchmark for the genre nearly 8 or so years on. But, Robert is definitely no one-trick pony. His rare and beautiful 'Nighttime World' on Cheap is a beautiful concoction of jazzy electronics still sought after by many non techno / electronic music fans today. 'Wire To Wire' manages to flirt with both of these timeless classics while still remaining fresh original - from the beautiful ethereal 'Make A Wish', 'Slightly', 'Fragile Moments', and the haunting and eerie hip-hop beats of 'The Game' to the dubbed out futurism of 'Upon A Millennial Moment', 'Wire To Wire' certainly gives us a glimpse into Robert's down-tempo / electronic prowess. But it doesn't stop there, the real mark of Robert's production talents are shown when he effortlessly manages to make euphoric funky minimalism such as 'The Wire' 'Aural 512' nestle perfectly alongside. A perfectly balanced album to be enjoyed either at home or in a club. Classic music that will stand the test of time. Track listing: 1. Make A Wish 2. The Game 3. Upon A Millennial Moment 4. Interior suspect 5. Slightly 6. Fragile Moments 7. High Plains Drifter 8. The Age Of Eleven 9. The Wire 10. Aural 512 Make A Wish is a suitably spell-binding opening track. Delicate pizzicato keys paint a melody which ascends and descends over restrained percussion. Occasional deep bass booms and gently-struck ride cymbals move the track along, contributing to the playful feel of the music. The sound of the strings used on The Game will be familiar to followers of Robert's work, yet they are used with extra subtlety here. They lay atop a broken-beat, while extra layers of shimmering tones add to the atmosphere. The deep, organic-sounding percussion of Upon A Millennial Moment continues the rich and sensual flavour of the album. This is only amplified further when the sweeping strings and guitar-like instrumentation are added - providing a true jewel in the crown of this album. There's something very majestic about the opening chords of Interior Suspect. It's a feeling which continues to build, as further layers of sound are added to the mix. The first 4/4 kick of the album appears shortly afterwards, carrying the music forward into more familiar, but no less impressive, Robert Hood territory. Slightly begins sounding like a click track gone wrong. The rhythm can't decide to settle - adopting a human-like uncertainty, as many different sounds appear to take a bow whilst never really taking the lead. This represents the is the king of linear techno going against the grain! Again well-titled, Fragile Moments communicates just that. The opening ambience gives way to a slow, house-paced number which is as sun-drenched as anything you'd find on a Cafe Del Mar compilation. There's an audible jazz-influence to the keys on High Plains Drifter - similar to the bubbling, tonal style of Rob's harder work, but employed in a more soaring, downtempo way here. Drums are kept to a minimum, wisely - restricted to a subtle selection of hi-hats and soft percussive sounds. Brooding synths bring in The Age Of Eleven, which embarks upon a wandering path of an string-led ambience - something which could be considered a hallmark of this album. The Wire is one of the only tracks on the album that fires straight into a kickdrum-led drum pattern but, regardless, the achingly melodic keys still manage to convey a feeling of fragility. melancholy even. This track sums up the balance at work on this album (appropriate, given the title), and underlines Robert's considerable talent as a producer. The slow latin-inflected percussion of Aural 512 sees the album to it's conclusion. String flourishes dance with each other, interacting perfectly, and closing the album in a celebratory mood. Look out for Robert Hood's 'Omega' (PFG043) the second in Peacefrog's ultra rare 'Private Pressing' series. Still available: PFG026 'Who Taught You Math' 12 PFG029 'The Art Of War' 2x12 Soon to be re-pressed due to popular demand: PFG027 Point Blank 2LP / CD
Re: (313) electro house is taking over (maybe not just in OZ)
Nah, Dad House is deep house. The 'correct' term for electro-house is 'Death Disco' or 'Disco Punk'. Pay attention, people! :-) Cheers! TOM I thought it was called dad house! -Original Message- From: Odeluga, Ken [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, April 29, 2003 2:03 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) electro house is taking over (maybe not just in OZ) Semi-seriously though: a lot of house music does seem (to me) to be gettting a bit too polite of late. Even though I have enjoyed virtually everything I've heard from Geist and Jesrani et al, I do think that they have contributed rather a lot to a trend of too clean, rather tame and 'uneccentric' house. Which is why I've somewhat gone back to much older material which displays a roughness simply because that was all that was possible at the time (I'm talking pre-1990) from the technology available.. Also, what new stuff I buy has to have some sort of edge. I'm a bit mad, so is the world, so is everyone I know! I appreciate slightly flaky house too. I tend to plump for a lot of European stuff, some minimalist things, Cologne/Vienna/Berlin sort of things, Brinkmann, even some Gigolo (but choose that carefully!): e.g. That Punishment EP thing by David Carretta from 02 (I think) is still very very spine tingling ... I saw Morgan Geist's remix of the House of Jealous Lovers track, by the DFA, a white, avant-rock sort of New York(?) group - a much rougher work than one would normally associate with that Geist - as partial vindication of my burgeoning thoughts (which are all natch, mho.) k -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, April 29, 2003 2:35 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) electro house is taking over (maybe not just in OZ) It's called 'Mansion' round these parts. Re: (313) Nag Nag Nag
Yup, way off-topic, but if anyone in the Midlands wants to get a taste of NagNagNag, we have their 'house band' Atomizer playing live here in Nottingham on 29th May. This week, however, we have the debut live performance from R3mote, the great new signing to Andrew Weatherall's Rotters Golf Club label. Info at www.sunglassesatnight.com. That's it, plug over. TOM Hi everyone, I was reading the new Jockey Slut and it featured a piece about Nag Nag Nag (@ The Ghetto in London), and it pretty much took the piss out of it for being too fashion-centric etc. without talking about the music at all. I thought I'd ask if anyone off the list had been down and checked it out? I've been a few times now and I must say it was excellent!! The fashion types were in full force, but don't let that put you off - the people I talked to were super friendly, there are queens in crazy costumes, and sometimes you get an outrageous stage performance, there's never a dull moment. The main thing is the DJs (mainly Jo Jo) play quality techno, house, electro, 80's, rock - anything goes...it's surely the only place in London to hear this music on a Wednesday night, perhaps any night!!! Has anyone else been or plan to go? All the best, Andrew PS. I am not in the pay of the Ghetto or it's affiliates. ;-)
(313) Fw: Disco D finds the Booty!
ARTIST: DISCO D TITLE: A NIGHT AT THE BOOTY BAR LABEL: TOMMY BOY FORMAT: CD RELEASE DATE: 9 JUNE 2003 CAT. NO: TB-1565-2 Disco D is dirty like Uncle Luke. His music is fast and nasty like the neighborhood slut you went to school with and if Mr. Mathers is Detroit's worst kept secret, Disco D is the best. Hailing from the Motor City which pioneered such diverse genres of music ranging from rock-n-roll, to soul, to techno; Disco D has become the poster boy for the underground phenomenon known as Ghettotech. He has been called everything from surreally filthy, to the holder of the Ghettotech torch, to devastatingly wicked, by the press, yet his mother prefers to just call him David Shayman. At only 22 years of age, Disco D has already been featured and profiled in magazines such as Details, Urb, Mixer, CMJ, and Wired. Alternative Press included him in the Top 100 Artists of 2001 and he has graced the cover of XLR8R. As an alumnus of University of Michigan's business school, Disco D founded and heads two companies: Ghetto Tech Institute Recordings (GTI Recordings) as well as Booty Bar (along with DJ Profit and DJ Salinger), the world's first Ghettotech lifestyle brand. He has released music on !K7, Mixconnection Media, Intuit-Solar, as well as his own two labels, and has done remix work for galactic space pimps 8 Ball and MJG, former Cash Money Millionaire B.G., as well as The Lords of Acid. His underground mixtapes are coveted by the tragically hip and his records are included in the sets of influential international DJ's like Laurent Garnier, Bad Boy Bill, Andrew Weatherall and Dave Clarke. If Drum-n-Bass had been created in America, Ghettotech certainly would have been the end result. Like Drum-n-Bass, Ghettotech is the hybridization of two cultures and genres of music. Whereas Drum-n-Bass has heavy techno and ragga influences, Ghettotech borrows from old school electro and raunchy Miami Bass to create its own distinct sound and scene. Ghettotech is ultimately more fun and it is uniquely American in its sleazy decadence with its amphetamine-paced beats and adult themes. Indeed, Ghettotech will never get played at a high school dance with its profane samples and raps dedicated to topics ranging from cunnilingus, to smoking blunts, to getting drunk... in other words, the finer things in life. Ghettotech is meant to actually make people dance, it is strictly populist; and it accomplishes that largely with DJ battle tricks, frenetic beats, and its uniquely filthy sound. Although quite a few parallels can certainly be drawn between Drum-n-Bass and Ghettotech, specifically the use of break beats and the convergence of the black urban music scene and the largely white dance music culture, they produce inherently different sounds. Think 2 Live Crew meets electronic dance music meets a bottle of Old English and you have Ghettotech. Ghettotech has recently left Detroit's underground cabaret parties and strip clubs to be embraced by more traditional dance music aficionados. For those that are in the know in the dance scene, Ghettotech is where it's at, bitch. Disco D's own brand of Ghettotech could be described as being more musical than some of his contemporaries. Certainly, the tracks are a little richer - more polished, and often more overtly funky than some of the standard booty fare. As a DJ, he is the perfect compromise between the party styles of DJ Assault, and the straight up turntablist deck-work of DJ Godfather. Disco D manages to combine nifty programming with immaculate scratching, cutting, and track-drops - you'll be in awe of his skills, yet he never interupts the smooth flow of the mix. Disco D's latest mixed effort A Night at the Booty Bar, marks an exciting time at Tommy Boy with its equally strong representation of the two sounds and cultures they capture best: dance and hip hop. A Night at the Booty Bar is a stunning mix and a good primer for those new to Ghettotech and a good refresher for those already crotch-deep within the raunchy scene. A Night at the Booty Bar includes many of Disco D's original productions and collaborations with artists like former Cash Money Millionaire B.G., Kid Rock protégé Paradime, European darling Princess Superstar, Detroit's first lady of rap Lola Damone and underground up-and-comer Helluva. Naturally, Disco D's stellar remixes are included as well as many classic Ghettotech anthems. In true mixtape fashion, Helluva, Lola, and Harlem's Solace blesses the disc with freestyles. A Night at the Booty Bar hits the racks on June 8th. Hear it at your favourite strip club and warehouse parties. Re: (313) Ghostly International Idol Tryouts V 1
Agreed, it's an excellent comp and the Dykehouse Wire cover is a standout amongst many (I think Sam V told me it would be coming out on a 12, too). Well worth checking anyway. TOM Got the Idol Tryouts Volume 1 to review, and it really raises the question: Tadd Mullinix: Is there nothing he can't do? Also have been loving the Dykehouse track that sounds like Husker Du backing up Brian Eno. Every frickin track on this comp has something that is missing from even some music I really like: pure stupid almost-pop grooviness. It's like a big box of candy bars. Dangerously close to being commercial, not because of pandering impulses, but because it's inviting, involving, even accessible music. Big up the GI crew. This CD should turn heads!

(313) new Dopplereffekt LP 'Linear Accelerator' on Gigolo
Had a chance to listen to this at the weekend. It just couldn't be further from their previous stuff. If anyone heard the two tracks that were released as a single (Myon-Neutrino and Z-Boson), well, they are easily the most listenable of the six on there. It's like Kraftwerk's 'Radioactivity' LP (the sleeve artwork as well as the music) put through a noise blender, and frankly it was making my ears bleed. I just can't imagine ever voluntarily listening to it again. Anyone else heard it and want to comment?

Re: (313) www.electroempire.com - shut down!
Bummer. Electro Empire is a great site and very useful resource. Many of the sites I use the most are similar: run by fans for nothing more than the love of the music and the desire to contribute something to it, such as discogs.com, Amazing Discographies etc. It's one area where the net really comes into its own. I hope EE is able to carry on in one form or another. - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Thursday, February 27, 2003 1:30 AM Subject: (313) www.electroempire.com - shut down! from their website: The Dawn of Electro Empire After a glorious period (more than 4 years) we've decided to stop the Electro Empire community. One of the main causes is the incredible price raise for webservices and webspace. We didn't find a decent sponsor who was willing to pay the bills for maintaining the website. As the EE community is constantly growing (almost 2 GigaByte of webspace) it was impossible to keep it free without any advertisements. Another cause was the time we've spent in EE. Many hours of design, programming, scanning and uploading. It was definitly worth it, but with the available time nowadays it's hard to do updates on a regular base, even with all the help you guys gave. I want to thank all of the members, producers, friends, contacts and labels for all their support troughout the years. You all have created one big family and sure we will all meet someday in the near future. People already offered to takeover and continue ElectroEmpire.com. Much respect to them and good luck keeping this dream alive Only the forum will be online till Februari 15, 2003. After that it's up to the 2nd generation of EE!!! Electro Empire Team, 2003
(313) Fw: System moves on...
System moves on... - Original Message - From: Addy To: SYSTEM FRIENDS ; SYSTEM LISTINGS ; SYSTEM MEDIA ; SYSTEM WEB Sent: Wednesday, February 26, 2003 11:16 PM Subject: System moves on... Due to ongoing difficulties at Propaganda, the promoters of System have decided to finish their Thursday night sessions at the venue. System was launched in September 2002 and has held host to some of the world's best and most prolific DJs on the techno scene, including Adam Beyer, Umek, Ben Sims, Trevor Rockcliffe, Marco Bailey, Christian Smith, Billy Nasty, Stanny Franssen, Dave Clarke and residents Marco Carola, Mark Broom and Terry Mitchell. In a letter to System members, the promoters state the main reasons behind their decision: We have listened to all of your comments on System over the last six months and although most of the comments have been positive, the negative comments have consistently been about the sound system and the security. We have tried constantly to fix these problems but the management have broken promise after promise to make the situation better and have left us no choice but to leave Propaganda. We have had a lot of meetings with other venues but with no luck, so for now we feel we have no other option but to close. However, we think London needs a weekly techno party and if we find somewhere suitable we shall definitely be back. Please note that System will therefore NOT be opening tomorrow (27 February) for the Paul Mac album launch or for the foreseeable future. ...And now for the good news! The promoters of System have just finished negotiations with an excellent, brand new, central London venue for a new monthly party. Details are unavailable at this time but keep your eyes open because on Saturday 5th April, System will be kicking off in a new format. Thank you to everyone who made it down and to those that helped to publicise the System nights. I hope to have some updated news for you soon! Re: (313) Massive Attack
Nope, but I have a single with a nice Luomo mix and a very cool Akufen mix. Anyone heard the new Massive Attack LP? I've had it since Dec and I really like it. It's very, very electronic sounding. It reminds me in mood of Plastikman. I didn't get into Mezzanine at all, but I like this.
(313) counting BPMs
I recently downloaded some shareware which lets you count the BPMs of a track by tapping your keyboard in time with the music. This is fine as far as it goes, but does anyone know of any software (excluding full-blown music production/arrangement software packages) that allow BPM counting automatically ie. counting the speed of whatever you pipe in through the sound card? I assume that if hardware companies can make mixers that count BPMs then there must be some software out there that can do the same, but all I can find are key-tappers. TOM
Re: (313) [313] just a quick question.
DJs, shops, distributors, journalists, live bookers etc etc etc. Many labels add stickers to promos saying 'not for re-sale', but it's a pointless endeavour: most inevitably get sold on for cash. Otherwise people would have shelves of unwanted records sitting there going to waste. TOM the curiosity is burning my brain. who gets promo copies of releases? and, if they're not for re-sale... how do they end up on the market?

(313) gassing on
from www.skrufff.com: Dave Clarke London Gig Disrupted by Tear Gas Scores of clubbers were left coughing at last night's System event at Propaganda, after a CS gas type substance percolated through the central London club. The incident happened around 11.30 pm as the techno weekly filled up with revellers arriving for Dave Clarke's first London DJ set of the year and led to a 20 minute break in music as security opened fire doors to ventilate the premises and search for the source of the choking fumes. The first sign of something wrong came as numerous clubbers in the bar area began coughing, though nobody appeared to be seriously adversely affected throughout the entire period. Music was subsequently restored and though some people left following the incident, a packed still enthusiastic crowd heard Clarke playing a largely old techno school set.

(313) Fw: Novamute Gives A Nod To The Future
ARTIST: VARIOUS ARTISTS TITLE: 2CDs MP3s LABEL: NOVAMUTE FORMAT: 2 x CD CAT NO : NOMU117CD RELEASE DATE: APRIL 7 2003 THIS IS A 2xCD COLLECTION FEATURING 16 TRACKS (MANY PREVIOUSLY UNAVAILABLE ON CD) PLUS 28xMP3 FILES More than any other, the ever-broadening genre we know as Techno is synonymous with technology and innovation, both conceptually and in method. From the early days of Kraftwerk or and the unabashed Futurism of early Detroit techno, such advancement has been present within the the very fabric of the music. In their times, the pioneers of this music were visionaries - inspired and driven by their imagination, they would translate this into sonics through whatever means were at their disposal - working with whatever technology was available to them at the time. In recent years, we have been witnessing the control of music and technology passing from the hands of the few to the de-centralised many. One facet of this phenomena has been the breakthroughs in digital and compressed music technology - most notably the development of the MP3 format. One of the most interesting applications of this technology has occurred within the context of DJ mixing. Enabled by software and hardware developers such as N2IT / Stanton and Native Instruments, who are responsible for the revolutionary Final Scratch and Traktor systems, respectively, the implications for the future of DJing are very exciting. It is in acknowledgement of this explosion of new possibilities that novamute has opted to release this compilation. It is becoming all the more common for DJs to actually request promos of new material in MP3 format - removing the need to encode tracks from traditional media. 2CDs MP3s features many tracks previously available as 12 only releases: Speedy J, Debasser, Tim Wright, Needledust!, Nitzer Ebb, Umek, Earnest Honest, some exclusives, including Luke Slater ('on loan' from Mute) Nothing At All Console remix, Si Begg's 'Eurostar' remix, plus Thomas Brinkmann's astounding Echoboy remix, which received only limited availability. Speaking of Rhythm Sound... LOST SATURDAY 1 MARCH, 2003 10pm - 6am Red. STEVE BICKNELL (LOST / COSMIC) JEFF MILLS (AXIS / CHICAGO) + MORE T.B.A Blue. '45 SESSION' WITH RHYTHM SOUND AND MARK (HONEST JON'S) Further info reservations - Tel: 020 7791 0402 E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Web: http://www.lost.co.uk Fresh and re-energised from the storming 'Awa-Awa-Adee' party on the 27th of December, Lost return in more 'conventional' format for their next party on the 1st of March. The post-Xmas disco / funk / soul throwdown saw old Lost-friends - Jeff Mills and Luke Slater - join Steve Bicknell to present a rootsy selection of retro classics. There will be more parties under this banner in the future, so keep your ear to the ground. Jeff Mills returns for the first Lost event of 2003. The club worked closely with Jeff throughout 2002, presenting some rather special sets from him, including September's multimedia DJ performance, in which he and Steve opened the evening with interactive visual soundscapes, before rocking the party with some more dancefloor-orientated sounds. The next party will see Mr. Mills back for a longer set in the Red area - in more slammin' mode. This is an exclusive London date, and the last on Jeff's current 'Medium' tour. Bank your money on hearing some of the best techno and house on the planet. Surely you don't need to be told how good this man is at the turntables. BELIEVE. He'll be joined in the Red area by Lost-honcho, Steve Bicknell. Aside from putting on some of the finest techno events in London (/ U.K. / The World) for over 10 years now, Steve has a proven track record in both the studio and as a DJ of Worldwide repute. In the Blue area, Lost welcomes some very special guests from Berlin. Mark Ernestus and Moritz Von Oswald are two of the most revered figures in electronic music, having cast vast influence with their densely-textured, dubby template, on their stable of labels - Basic Channel, Chain Reaction, M and Burial Mix - home to the pair's many aliases. Mark and Moritz cemented their place in Lost's history years ago by performing a legendary live set as Basic Channel, alongside Jeff Mills - this being their only ever live UK appearance. Reggae and, more specifically, Dub, is the common theme in the duo's work and, in recent years, this has manifested itself more overtly, with the Rhythm Sound project on their Burial Mix imprint. It is under this banner that they will be appearing at Lost - hosting their own room, and presenting a special reggae / dub selection. In this, they will be ably assisted by Mark, from West London's Honest Jon's record shop. Thanks for all your support - much appreciated! - See ya! (313) Fw: Jeff Mills Crate Diggin'
Would any 313ers care to suggest any Mills trax for this list? (see below) Please send to me I'll forward them on to the guy. TOM Hi Tom, hope you are well. I was just hoping that I could pick your brains regarding Jeff Mills, as he is the subject for Crate Diggin' in the March magazine. I need to spotlight his ten biggest/most collectable tracks and remixes, so am asking people to let me know which tracks they think should definitely be included. I also need to recommend books etc where fans collectors can find out more, so if you can think of any good suggestions, they would be much appreciated too. Cheers for your assistance, Many thanks and kind regards, Darren.

BELIEVE. (313) Fw: GD LUXXE opens the '21st Door'
ARTIST: GD LUXXE TITLE: THE 21ST DOOR LABEL: INTERDIMENSIONAL TRANSMISSIONS FORMAT: CD RELEASE DATE: 24 MARCH 2003 Finding inspiration from the darker side of electronic music of all eras, Gerhard Potuznik has put together a ground breaking album entitled the 21st Door for Ectomorph's Interdimmensional Transmissions. Gerhard Potuznik began making music in Vienna in the early 80s, initially as a guitarist. A staunch fan of all things dark and quirky, Gerhard is perhaps the hardest working man in electronic music. From production to songwriting to releasing his music in multiple genres in many countries, this man does it all. With an unfathomable amount of material already released (including his productions with Pulsinger Tunakan on Cheap as iO, and his production work for Chicks on Speed) it is his G D Luxxe project that is his strongest. With releases as G D Luxxe on Ersatz Audio, Breakin, and Suction, he is dedicated to taking his quality music to as many worthy outlets as possible, but his Factory obsessed full length for IT is a totally different story. Herein we find him exploring his obsessions while crossing so many boundaries: rock (a cover of T Rex included), IDM, EBM, Italian Disco broken English, electro, techno and beyond. This is fresh music from a true innovator. This is a record sure to cross boundaries and turn heads. In an era of fast food music, IT bring you nutrition. IT is a label that doesn't just release records, it releases milestones, from the visionary From Beyond series that debuted I-f's Space Invaders to the world, to the early Ectomorph relics that still set the standard. In 2003, IT is taking a new approach by releasing numerous albums, three amazing full lengths from 3 leaders of their sounds. Coming soon from the label is an EP from newly signed Perspects, The Third and Final Report (IT 19) due out as you read this and coming later this year is a remix 12 and his debut full length. This year will also see the Ectomorph album (IT 18) and world tour. 2003 marks the new beginning of Interdimensional Transmissions. Enter it via the 21st Door. www.star67.com

Re: (313) Track id - electrotrack
That's on an EP by Fancy Robots called 'South Of The Sun, North Of The Moon' (Keys Of Life/Sahko). It's produced by Jori 'Zyntherius' Hulkonnen and Tuomas Salmela and came out in May 2001. TOM Hi, can someone id this track for me, has been played by dj Hell: it has a robot-voice, saying: 'We came out of the future, from behind the moon it was year 2020 I was still a boy I had a robot friend We played robot games until one day ..' Thanks, Remco
(313) Octave One at fabric
I just got a mail through announcing that Octave One will play live in the main room at fabric, London on Sat 1st Feb from 2-3am. Apparently they have a new album called 'The Theory Of Everything' coming up and will be previewing material from it on the night. Also, Fabric have Francois K (6hrs set), The Youngsters live and 313's own Fabrice Lig this Saturday, I think. I went to the club for the first time (!) on Friday and was very impressed: great sound system and a really good space. I know some people on the list aren't that keen on the place but I can imagine Octave One will go right off there. TOM

(313) Fw: THE HACKER TAKES THE NEXT STEP...
Mmm, this looks good... ARTIST: THE HACKER TITLE: THE NEXT STEP OF NEW WAVE LABEL: UWe DISTRIBUTION: PINNACLE FORMAT: CD RELEASE DATE: 10 MARCH 2003 CAT NO : HUMAN-06 Michel Amato, AKA The Hacker, has seen his profile rise considerably in the last few years. The Gigolo phenomenon, and Michel's collaborative work with Miss Kittin (resulting in their 'The First Album' long player), helped boost interest in his work and thrust him into his current position as one of France's hottest talents. Less known, however, is Michel's work aside to the Gigolo tie-in. Amato co-runs the Goodlife imprint along with two colleagues from the Grenoble (his home town) techno scene - one of whom is Oliver from techno-duo, Oxia, whose work also features heavily in the Goodlife catalogue. Whilst The Hacker's love of 80's style electronic music is obviously apparent in his production work, many of his more 4/4 influences have been ignored in the hype surrounding his Gigolo releases, though they are apparent to anyone who has checked his work on other labels. It is certainly Michel's intention to ensure that people realise that there are many strings to his bow, and one way he puts this across is through his DJing. Like Miss Kittin, The Hacker is also a talented DJ, although his work in this field has been more prominent in mainland Europe. However, his deck skills have had years to develop, and this facet of The Hacker's career should not be viewed as a mere backup to his studio work. 'The Next Step Of New Wave' is The Hacker's first commercially available mix CD. As the title suggests, its Michel's take on the future of electro - a genre which has displayed strong staying power over the years - always there in the background, until last year, when all eyes seemed to be turning it's way. Michel's position as a forerunner in this form of music enables him to select knowledgeably from the growing number of producers in the field - resulting in a varied, forward-facing collection of tracks. Amato's presentation of tracks in the mix highlights his professional touch - the tracks themselves remain the focus of the exercise, while the overall flow is tight and energetic. (313) New Beat/Saunderson etc
I'm currently researching an article on the Belgian New Beat scene and I found a listing for a 1988 cover of Reese Santonio's 'Rock To The Beat' on Speed Recs with vocals credited to Jade4U and Nicky Trax. Anyone heard this? What's it like? Also, anyone remember what RS was called before it became RS? The first five records (by Code 61 and B-Art) listed in the discography on Amazing Discogs have the catalogue numbers LCE001-5. Come to think of it, if there are any New Beat experts on the list, I'd love to hear from you. TOM
Re: (313) New Beat/Saunderson etc
I have the particular record on Speed recs. and it's pretty much the same as Saunderson's original (his name appears in the credits). Altough they might have slowed it down a bit slower for that typical New Beat- beat. :) The interesting thing is that Saunderson was apparently a fan of the New Beat sound, so maybe he liked the fact that they did his track? Also listed in the early RS discog is 'Baby Wants To Ride' by B-Art (who were they, anyway?) - seems the odd cover of US house/techno/acid was quite acceptable there then. TOM
Re: (313) books on techno: more brilliant than the sun
But if you're willing to follow along, and excuse the sometimes excessive dips into self-created jargon, he has some interesting ideas. No digging for a needle in a haystack -- they're good, fairly big ideas. But they sit alongside the specialized terms he invents, and you just have to be willing to accept that he uses his own ridiculous shorthand for things. Often, I don't like his terms, or his willingness to invent dozens of terms that don't really hold water, but I do like some of his ideas. I think Kodwo's invention of his 'own' language was half the reason for the book; he was frustrated with the usual adjectives and terms of reference that are used to with regard to music. This does make the book a fairly difficult read, but I think he deserves admiration for 'thinking outside the box' in this way. I do think he does tend to embrace some music that isn't really as deserving of the serious analysis he gives it as he thinks, though - but then no doubt he (and other!) would say the say same about me and every other music hack out there! (313) Fw: TERENCE FIXMER presents AKTION MEKANIK
ARTIST: VARIOUS COMPILED BY: TERENCE FIXMER TITLE: AKTION MEKANIK LABEL: MUSIC MAN FORMAT: CD / 2 X 12 CAT NO: MMCD 021 RELEASE DATE: 17 JANUARY 2002 Featuring classic 'EBM' (electronic body music) and Nu-Beat tracks from Nitzer Ebb, The Normal, Fad Gadget, Front 242, Crash Course In Science, Skinny Puppy, DAF, Liaisons Dangereuses and a new exclusive track from compiler (and Gigolo) Terence Fixmer, Aktion Mekanik brings together long lost/forgotten classics from the 80's Belgian Nu-Beat scene, whilst highlighting their influence on modern electronic composition. With tracks such as The Normal's 'Warm Leatherette' being covered by Chicks On Speed or bootlegged by Richard X and DJ Hell covering No More's 'Suicide Commando' and making the second half of his recent 'Electronicbody-housemusic' mix CD a homage to old and new versions of 'EBM', 'Aktion Mekanik' is a timely reminder of how we used to play. One such current producer who certainly used to play is Planete Rouge man, Terence Fixmer who has been fusing EBM with modern techno ever since 'Electrostatic' launched his life as a Gigolo in the late 90s. Born in Lille, on the Northern borders of Belgium it was at the tender age of 15 that Fixmer fell headfirst into the burgeoning EBM scene just across the border, where himself and fellow friends at Ghent's Music Man label fanatically followed bands such as Front 242, Klinik, DAF and Nitzer Ebb and frequented Belgian clubs such as Boccaccio and Skyline. I made this compilation as a personal journey and to remember the well respected electronic artists which are in someway our modern techno forefathers, states Fixmer. I made it just because this is the music of my heart and nothing to do with any 80s trend. With Fixmer having recently remixed Nitzer Ebb's classic 'Join In The Chant' for Novamute and now currently working with their singer Douglas MacCarthy on a new project, Aktion Mekanik neatly brings his EBM adventure full circle. Furthermore, look out next year for Crash Course In Science's never before released only album from the early 80's vaults set for a debut airing on Music Man some 20 years later.! Terence Fixmer plays live at ElectrooVoodoo, Liverpool on December 13th. More info: www.terencefixmer.com Nitzer Ebb - Warsaw Ghetto Nitzer Ebb, (strongly influenced by DAF) were, alongside Front 242, at the forefront of the EBM sound in the late 80s, with classics like Let Your Body Learn Join in The Chant. Warsaw Ghetto, taken from their second twelve inch (1985) is a more obscure track by them. Crash Course In Science - Cardboard Lamb Hailing all the way from Philadelphia, CCIS, only released one twelve inch from which this track is taken! Numerous covers have followed (check Pete Tong's essential anthem BUCCIBAG), but here in it's original glory. No More - Suicide Commando Indie Classic from 1981, got remixed by DJ Hell Echopark in 1998 as a taster for Hell's Munich Machine album. The Normal - Warm Leatherette Daniel Miller's classic, Mute records first releaseIt was in l978, right after Punk had started. The music at the time was quite unusual -- apart from a few groups like Kraftwerk. Fad Gadget - Coïtus Interruptus Taken from Fad Gadget's first album Fireside Favourites, this sets a benchmark for further Fad Gadget anthems like Ladyshave Collapsing New People! The Klinik - Hours + Hours Belgian electronic duo THE KLINIK started out in 1984, focusing their early efforts on the international home-taping circuit. But through their releases and remarkable live-gigs, which blend their haunting music with splendid and intriguing video footage, the twosome (Dirk IVENS - Voices and Marc VERHAEGHEN - Electronics) gradually built up a steady following and a reputation that stretched beyond the confinement of the Living room studio. Hours + Hours is taken from their first album Sabotage (1985). Daf - Verschwende Deine Junged The core of DAF are Gabi Delgado-Lopez and Robert Gorl. They met in Dusseldorf during the punk movement in 1977 whilst Gabi was singing in local punk bands and Robert finishing his formal musical training. They went on to release seminal tracks like Der Mussolini Brothers... This track is taken from the 1981 album Gold Und Liebe. The Invincible Limit - Push! First there was Invisible Limits as a band, Thomas Lüdke being a member, programming the sequences to such classics as Love is a Kind of Mystery and Devil Dance. Thomas then left, chose Invincible Limit as his new solo project, and made Push in 1986 (Last Chance Records). Alexi will join Steve Bicknell - offering a funk-fuelled feast of vibrant rhythms. As always in the red area, Steve Bicknell, who's acclaimed productions and DJ sets define the LOST sound, has tied the parties together since the clubs inception with his blend of densely textured techno and house. Latterly of M Plant, formerly involved with Underground Resistance and Axis, responsible for seminal techno classic 'Minimal Nation' amongst many others, Rob Hood made his UK DJ debut at LOST. His sets hold magnificent memories for us, and this semi-live performance looks set to continue this trend. Robert will be delivering the goods in his own inimitable style and placing his sonic stamp firmly on the proceedings. Yes - he can't keep away and we wouldn't want him to. Hot on the heels of his last LOST set in August, Fumiya Tanaka is back. Tanaka is an excellent DJ, with a vast production catalogue, including work on his own Torema label, Tresor and LOST Recordings. We're happy to welcome old school master, K.Alexi, to LOST - playing his first set for us. and his second! K. Alexi is a man with a history, who's past classics such as 'Club MCM' (Rhythm Beat/DJ International), 'My Medusa' and 'All for Lee-sah' (Transmat) influenced the next generation. Kaay will be presenting sets in both the red experimental techno area and the blue house room. Kim Bilir will be represented in the blue, alongside Mario and the aforementioned K. Alexi. The silent space features the Kim Bilir 'Inside the White Cube' installation (courtesy of S.Rashit) - incorporating the abstraction of colour, this is part of an evolving project which will occasionally feature in the LOST silent space when it isn't located in situ. (313) Fw: Perspects Review Copies *AMENDED*
ARTIST: PERSPECTS TITLE: THE THIRD AND FINAL REPORT LABEL: INTERDIMENSIONAL TRANSMISSIONS FORMAT: 12 VINYL RELEASE DATE: 13 JANUARY 2003 IT continues its journey into indivualistic and adventurous electronic music, creating the standards of the future. IT 19 finds Ian Clark in his debut appearance on Interdimensional Transmissions. Ian co-founded Le Car and helped bring new obsessions to Detroit Electro, influencing all that come after. After forming Perspects and releasing music on Ersatz Audio and Clone as well his submission for Disco Nouveau, Ian finally goes solo and is his own voice. The result? Devastation. Perspects' best record to date. 'The Third and Final Report' includes the soon to be classic 'Accumulators'. Full Length Rmx 12 due in 2003. In his own words: Air of Finality: The rocker. Out of a menacing, restarting intro emerge goosestepping synths and bullhorn voices to set the paranoid tone of the release. An analysis of mass quiet panic set to sleazy, eighth-note punch crunch. Comfort Gained: My current favourite. Sparse, eerie synths and claustrophobic vocals record the final moments of a modern man as he decides to capitalize on the acceptance of his fate. Gimme Panic: Just what it says - Doomsday disco that suggests a human stampede, and other chaotic descents. The Accumulators: The popsong. The line: we're accumulating refers to both consumers losing control and corpses piling up. Subtle differences in the two verses create a cause/effect dialogue that supports this. You can dance to it too. Statement concerning the Third and Final Report of Perspects: In 'Desire and Efficiency' the warnings were there. It was the soundtrack to our surrender to the uncertain velocities. The point where vigilance falls victim to comfort and the surface suddenly seems more real. Hoverculture was inevitable. Total seduction by surface. Songs became empty signifiers efficiently packaged for consumption. Anaesthetic and disassociative, it hadn't entirely worn off when the panic hit. Now the powermad have seized control and are steering us into a crash. Now we are taking hits to the fragile framework of finance and energy that sustains us. Never have we been more aware of our mortality than right now. This is why the Third and Final Report is necessary. I.T. is a label that doesn't just release records, it releases milestones - from the 'Visionary From Beyond' series that debuted I-F's 'Space Invaders' to the world, to the early Ectomorph relics that still set the standard. Coming soon from the label are full lengths from G.D Luxxe (IT 16) and Ectomorph (IT 18). Perspects: Shouldn't you be paying attention?

(313) Fw: ECTOMORPH DROP DADA ON I.T.
I'm sure BMG would be too polite to post this to the list himself... ARTIST: ECTOMORPH TITLE: DADA / RITMO SINIESTRO LABEL: INTERDIMENSIONAL TRANSMISSIONS FORMAT: 12 VINYL RELEASE DATE: 23 DECEMBER 2002 Ectomorph returns out of the void with the new visceral voodoo from another dimension A. Dada Voice as synthesis. There is nothing that matters except what you feel. Raw dog psychick power. B. Ritmo Siniestro A long-distance collaboration with master percussionists from Puerto Rico, yielding a new form of percussion freak out. In an era of fast food music, we bring you nutrition. At long last, it continues its relaunch with the next release in the I.T. future 2002 series: a fresh new statement from Ectomorph, long time leaders in their now over-hyped genre. Culled from their forthcoming full-length album, this 12 showcases rare concepts in electro these days: originality and new directions. This is organic electronic music, hand made from the finest synthetics. Ectomorph have materialized in many forms since their 1995 debut release on I.T., and continue to document these progressions with their latest 12, Dada. Ectomorph exist as an amplified I.D. with the goal of conjuring pure forms of rhythm and sound. They have long functioned as a collective with ever-changing members and nameless contributors revolving around main conduit Brendan M Gillen. The group has developed a new approach to sound by delivering unique in-the-moment live performances, often with additional avant-theatre The frequency of these performances has created a fluid communication of structure and improvisation, based around the core nucleus of BMG Erika. After years of performing live together, the sound of Ectomorph's recorded work finally matches the fluidity of their live performances. I.T. is a label that doesn't just release records, it releases milestones - from the 'Visionary From Beyond' series that debuted I-F's 'Space Invaders' to the world, to the early Ectomorph relics that still set the standard. Coming soon from the label is an EP from newly signed Perspects, 'The Third and Final Report' (IT 19), along with full lengths from G.D Luxxe (IT 16) and Ectomorph (IT 18). This 12 marks the beginning of a new attention to detail in the quality of production and mastering, and the start of a new look for Interdimensional Transmissions.

(313) Fw: DEDBEAT 3 POSTPONED UNTIL 28TH FEB
DEDBEAT 3 Pontin's Holiday Village Hemsby Norfolk http://www.dedbeat.net DEDBEAT NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT: DEDBEAT 3 POSTPONED TO 28TH FEBRUARY Dedbeat HQ: We have decided to postpone the date of Dedbeat from the scheduled 8-9-10th of November until the 28-1-2 of Feb/March. Please do not worry as this is not a massive problem when you consider the alternative. We sincerely apologise for the disruption that this may cause, especially to those who booked up early. However if we pursue the original date it could result in problems that would mean the end of Dedbeat. We could give you some BS excuse or proceed and deliver an event that is not up to our high standard, but we are not about taking the easy way out when quality is concerned. Concerts get postponed, tours get postponed, this really isn't the end of the world. It's still on. It's still going to be a banger! Feedback has been very positive for the planned date, however the consensus is that this is a financially tight time of year following the summer and the run up to Christmas. The general opinion is that the event would be better suited to the start of the next year as the winter pick up it has come to be known as. Indeed a large majority have assumed that we were planning a February Dedbeat all the same. The venue, the ethos and the line up will remain in effect exactly the same. Any alterations will be adequately compensated. There will be no Skam Records (Please note we will be doing future events with Skam 'coz they're top blokes). In their place will be: Super_Collider - live (Feat: Christain Vogel, Jamie Liddell Mat Yeeking Cassette Boy (Barry's Bootlegs) - live Haywire will be in full effect - line up to follow very shortly; expect rude bass badness! Toytronics Records Feat: Digitonal - live Multiplex - live CiM - live Please keep perspective on the issue - THIS EVENT HAS NOT BEEN CANCELLED - THE DATE HAS SIMPLY BEEN CHANGED. If you are concerned about the chill factor checkout the cosy brick chalets you'll be frequenting http://www.pontins.com/pontins-hemsby.htm.Trailer trash is now a thing of the past. To emphasise again this measure is a positive action to ensure that this event can run long into the future and be as good a party as possible. We have sold 70% of the tickets available (if you think we are telling porkies ask Pontins). If you have already purchased tickets they are now valid for the new date in February 2003, however if you would like a refund then this is fine. The same applies for coach tickets. The remaining tickets are still on sale for this new date. If you have already purchased Rail, Coach or Air tickets and will incur a charge to change the date then we will reimburse you the amount charged. If you have any questions then please call us on 0870 1611 626. We are a small independent organisation and we rely on your support. We will not compromise our integrity; we'll do things the straight up way and tell it like it is. Having said all that the most important statement we'd like to convey is: The show will go on.just a little later! Dedbeat For up to date info on these changes see www.dedbeat.net http://www.dedbeat.net ALL TICKETS INCLUDE: 3 days and two nights of music split between three indoor venues. 2/3 nights self-catering, en suite, accommodation ALL with TV. Re: (313) Mailing lists?
Basically, the only sure way to do this is to get yourself into a position where labels WANT you to play/hear their stuff. This means a) becoming an internationally-known 'name' DJ, b) reviewing for a magazine etc, or c) having your own radio show or something like that. The problem is basically that there are millions of DJsout there and independent labels only have limited resources. For example, a small techno label might sendout just fifty promo copies, and in that position, they're inevitably going to target the big names, as they want the 'prestige' of a name DJ playing their tracks. Someone like Jeff Mills will have every label under the sun sending him their recordson the off-chance that he might like just one of them, because they know that if people hear Jeff play a track people are much more likely to go and try and find it and also because they can then make a fuss about it on their promotional material. The irony is that while well-known DJs (who often make more than enough to be able to buy a ton of records a week) are deluged with free music, it's often pretty difficult to get a reaction from them, while the lesser-known DJ who will always send them reactions, usually has to go and buy his vinyl. That doesn't mean it isn't worth trying, however. You need to send labels you like and DJ promo companies your details, preferably accompanied with some kind of proof of the fact that you are playing out regularly. Then if you get sent stuff you need to make sure you send back prompt, honest reactions to *everything* they send you, otherwise they'll whip you off their list again. No label wants to feel they're sending stuff into the void, as it were. Ultimately they WILL value your feedback. Oh, and often DJs who also run labels will bring a couple of extra copies of their latest release along to give to residents at their guest spots. But that's obviously not something you can count on. Incidentally, this is just the kind of thing that's in the 'How To DJ (Properly)' book that has also just come up on 313. Cheers, TOM Does anybody out there have any idea on how to get on record mailing lists. I have been djing for years and never got a one record free, apart from ooops sorry, Claude Young and James Ruskin. Seriously though, I have my own club night too and don't know what I should do, any advice? Cheers Scott McGill www.tfunkshun.com

(313) Fw: THE COSMIC MEMOIRS OF THE LATE GREAT RUPERT J. ROSINTHROPE
ARTIST: SHIFTED PHASES TITLE: THE COSMIC MEMOIRS OF THE LATE GREAT RUPERT J. ROSINTHROPE LABEL: TRESOR CAT. NO: 56196-2/6 DISTRIBUTION: SRD RELEASE: 16 DECEMBER 2002 The mysterious new project born from Drexciyan parents is here. Entitled Shifted Phases, this new generation Techno-Electro hybrid was created in turbulent seas here on Earth, but evolved and mutated out in deep space among the stars. Shifted Phases documents the cosmic life and times of Rupert J. Rosinthrope; combining Detroit Electro, Techno and Freak-Jazz signals in deeply moving space-speak... While Shifted Phases is purely Drexciyan, tracks like Solar Wind and The Freak Show illustrate the harder sides of the solar system - tough and dancey while Waveform Cascades, Dance of the Celestial Druids and Scattering Pulsars lean towards quirked electro. The elusive Mr. Rosinthrope chose his Detroit biographers wisely - the deep message is well understood. CD TRACKLIST: 01. Solar Wind (6:21) 02. White Dwarf (3:43) 03. Waveform Cascades (4:26) 04. Re: (313) Essential reading...
I've got a copy and it's a good book. Yeah, much of it will be obvious/familiar to anyone who'd been DJing a while, but then there are plenty of things in there you won't have thought of too, and let's face it, there are loads of aspiring DJs out there who need a book just like this. The authors are very much concerned with promoting DJing as an extension of a love of music and not a career path. They just recognise that a lot of people start for the *wrong* reasons and need some pointers. Trust me, it's worth reading. The authors know their onions (even if they are Dad house mafiosa :-). TOM I'm sure the only way you can learn how to mix is just do it yourself and keep trying but I'm sure it's entirely possible to learn some useful tips on programming and the business by reading a few books about it - the more input you get from as many people as possible the more chance you have of becoming a good DJ surely? What I don't like is reading books telling me how to become a successful DJ - I don't need to be told what music to play and how to get gigs in big clubs - surely most people DJ because it's fun, not because they envisage a career and a jetset lifestyle? -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, October 23, 2002 4:44 PM To: Langsman, Marc Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Essential reading... (313) Fw: John Redmond
It is with the greatest sorrow that I have to let you all know of the death yesterday of John Redmond. For those of you who are unfamiliar with his work, he was one of the most talented vocalists in this here scene of ours we call house. He was the voice on Braxton Holmes People Everyday on Cajual, Rise with Kenny Carvajal on Music 101, DJ V's Darker Side Of Melody on Love Slap, Common Factor's World Is Mine and Fascination on Planet E, and many more, inluding his own especially touching Tears Dry Up on Cyclo. He passed away yesterday at Loyola Hospital in Chicago of a heart attack brought on by a congenital heart defect and pneumonia. I do not yet have any details regarding the funeral, as these have not been confirmed yet. However, it will be held on Saturday October 26 here in Chicago. If you would like more information when this is available, please email me privately. I think it would mean a great deal to John's parents to have an idea of how many people were touched by John and his music. If you would like to send a message to his family, please address it to John and Dorothy Redmond. Feel free to send these to me at the email address below, and I will pass them on to the family. Please spread this around as there are a lot of people who would want to know, but we haven't been able to get in touch with. I would also like to ask you all to pray for John and his family. These are hard times, and a ray of light is now missing from all our lives. (313) Fw: ESKIMO presents SERIE NOIRE
Lots of blurb to wade through, but an interesting tracklisting! ARTIST: VARIOUS TITLE: ESKIMO presents SERIE NOIRE COMPILED BY: MO, BENOELIE DIRK FOR ESKIMO SOUND SYSTEM LABEL: ESKIMO RECORDS FORMAT: CD (mixed) DOUBLE VINYL (unmixed) RELEASE DATE: 16 DECEMBER 2002 CAT NO: 541416 500874 (CD) / 541416 500875 (2LP) Série Noire, is a collection of groundbreaking electronic dance music from the (recent) past which aims to reinstate the value of long-lost dance collectives, producers and bands who once (or repeatedly) hit the mark and proved to be hugely influential for generations to come. These torchbearers never set the charts alight, nor were they backed by big record companies (or for that matter, endorsed by fizzy soda drinks). But their output is still revered by both adventurous DJs and and well informed punters. Sometimes, visiting the past makes the future a little clearer. It's no coincidence many contemporary alchemists of sound are now harking back to the era when electronic music was at its primal stage. Two decades ago, synthesisers, beat boxes and samplers were the domain of freaky fanatics and world-weary outcasts who would lose sleep over crossing the right wires, pushing the appropriate buttons and distilling emotions from stark hardware and volatile electricity. In those days, electronica was not an option, it was a statement, a declaration of independence and intent. Little wonder the world back then was not yet ready for the uncompromising sounds of the loosely assembled avant-garde of dark pop. Série Noire, is a collection of groundbreaking electronic dance music from the (recent) past, aims to reinstate the value of long-lost dance collectives, producers and bands who once (or repeatedly) hit the mark and proved to be hugely influential for generations to come. These torchbearers never set the charts alight, nor were they backed by big record companies (or for that matter, endorsed by fizzy soda brands). But their output is still revered by both adventurous DJs and and well informed punters. Culled from different time zones and non-aligned scenes, the Série Noire-tracks all have a similar brooding, ominous feeling about them, a fact that's got more to do with the artists' vision and mindset than the kind of record label they chose to release their songs on. The bulk of these tracks were recorded at a time when people didn't yet need a brick-heavy directory to catalogue all the different dance genres that are around today. Electronic music was still made in a special kind of splendid isolation, far away from the mainstream. Shying away from disco's all too obvious hedonism or industrial's blatant body politics, underground dance from the early eighties in particular excelled in creating music that perfectly encapsulated both feelings of tension and release. Fusing cold Kraftwerkian robotic beats with primitive funk, or pasting sinewy squelches onto calculated rhythm patterns, a batch of wayward musicians devised the kind of music that felt strangely detached but couldn't help but get under the skin. Belgian New Beat took this approach to the extreme: snarling, seductive and above all tantalisingly slow, it may still be the only dance genre in the book that manages to sound neutered and devilishly sexy at the same time. The cuts compiled here on Série Noire were never intended as incrowd anti-art or some kind of aural poetry. They were created to dance to, and not much else. And so the clubheads did, although only a very specific breed of clubhead. While the rest of the population grooved away on popular Top 30-tunes, the kids of Dark Pop and New Beat hid away in derelict disco's and disused warehouses. In Belgium, places like Ghent's Boccaccio and Antwerp's AB gave shelter to a crowd craving for more than a status-quo. Highly individual, proudly nonconformist and dressed to impress, those figureheads of youth gladly gave in to the otherworldly, droning sound, reflecting as it did both their sophistication and their dissatisfaction. It wasn't just a local thing: everywhere in Europe a movement took shape, only to make way, years later, for house, techno, MTV and mobile phones. Still, it's rewarding, nay, elementary to look back to those missing links of electronic dance music. It doesn't happen very often that something as simple and evident as dance music proves to be as much about sheer imagination as it is about effortless innovation. And judging from the enthusiasm the kids of today are lapping up these past nuggets with, the original, pioneering dark pop of yesteryear still transmits its true message: to be a cut above the rest. (313) Fw: Stewart Walker : Degenerate
He's dropped the S! Artist: STEWART WALKER Title: DEGENERATE Label: PERSONA Format: 12 Cat. no.: PRS-008 Release date: 16/12/02 Stewart Walker has been a player in the electronic music scene since 1997, when his first 12, 'Amphetamine Sulphate', was picked up by Sean Deason's Matrix imprint. Stewart's path into music grew from an early obsession with British bands such as My Bloody Valentine and Lush, although an avid interest in the British music press steered Walker's interest towards early electronic pioneers like 808 State and LFO - and the output of the fledgling Warp and Rephlex labels, amongst others. His eyes opened to this proto-techno sound, and early forays into music production followed, along with a growing awareness of US based artists pursuing a similar direction. Following a handful of single releases, Stewart's debut album - the tonal, groove-orientated 'Stabiles' - was picked up for release on Mille Plateau. For many, this was seen as Walker's entrance to the world stage. His work continued, gracing labels internationally, including Force Inc., M_Nus, Tresor, Rampe D, Tektite and Mosquito, but it wasn't until 2001 that he established the 'Persona' label, where his production style came into it's own. Stewart's sound matured - taking on an increased intricacy with the addition of new sonic layers. The label also came with a new agenda: Metaphors of machines were once necessary to discuss electronic music. In 2001 we are no longer 'the robots.' Instead, techno has become the most personal form of expression in today's musical spectrum. One person. One studio. Customizing rhythms and sounds that honestly represent his or her vision. Persona Records is about rebirth. Consider the history of electronic music but with no greater emphasis than the history of all music. The sealing of the 20th century archives allows us closure. Perspective. As the distance increases and our memories convert to fiction, new mutations of the form will arise. A1. Dead People Fight Back Kicking off with an almost two step flavour, this extremely melodic track has plenty of elements to get your ears round, without being awkwardly challenging. A2. Instrumental's Greatest Hits Stewart takes us on a slow stroll through some deep bass textures and subterranean static. A more restrained, home-listening ambiance. B1. Mysterious Rural Past More uptempo and techy, but still swimming in a dublike atmosphere, and a structure caught in a tug of war between the linear and an offstep skank. B2. Leaf Cutter's Practice A straight 4/4 piece but, as with the rest of the work on this 12, it possesses a subdued quality which steers it away from more traditional club material.

- Original Message - From: georgia To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, October 04, 2002 5:56 PM Subject: Sonarsound lands in Tokyo SONARSOUND LANDS IN TOKYO After London, Lisbon, Neuchatel and Hamburg, SONARSOUND will reach Tokyo the coming 12 and 13 of October. The framework of this new initiative will be the Tokyo Designers Block 2002 (www.tolyodesignersblock.com), an international interdisciplinary event taking place from October 10 to 14, which will bring outstanding designers from all over the world to the Japanese capital. This new SONARSOUND event will not only take the Sónar festival philosophy to Tokyo but will also enable us to get first hand knowledge of the local art scene and music industry with a view to future collaborations that will back and promote electronic artists from our country on the Japanese market. SONARSOUND will present a varied musical programme over two days with a total of fifteen acts. All this will take place at the spectacular Think Zone (www.66ic.com), a cube shaped art gallery with state of the art technology right in the heart of Roppongi Hills. On the 12th and in collaboration with Third Ear, there will be concerts by Soul Center, Dennis DeSantis, Numb and Why Sheep?, as well as DJ sets by Fumiya Tanaka, Hiroshi Watanabe and Dj Kentaro, whereas on the 13th it will be the turn of Ulrich Schnauss, Yoshinori Sunahara, World's End Girlfriend, Portable [K]ommunity, Yamauchi and Nao Tokui (Clickety And Clack), with Angel Molina and Fibla heading the list of those representing the Barcelona scene. Besides the music, SONARSOUND will complete its programme with two other activities aimed at stimulating debate, promotion and analysis: SonarSound Symposium, a forum that will focus on the present state of digital creation and its new territories of expansion, and SonarSound Lecture, a series of lectures around the fusion between digital art and advanced musics. SONARSOUND TOKYO is an Advanced Music (www.sonar.es) and Third Ear (www.third-ear.net) initiative in collaboration with the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya. All the information on this event can be viewed in Japanese at: www.sonarsound.jp. MUSIC PROGRAMME SONARSOUND BY NIGHT 1: 12/10 SOUL CENTER (live): With samples from soul labels such as Stax and a highly evolved form of minimalism as his touchstone, Thomas Brinkmann has established himself as the sole master of European techno. (http://www.mute.com/soulcenter/index.html) FUMIYA TANAKA (dj): One of the most idolatrised Japanese disc-jockeys on the international circuit. Admired by Jeff Mills and Juan Atkins, his style fluctuates between minimal techno and dub with touches of hip hop. (http://www.fumiyatanaka.com/) DENNIS DESANTIS (live): The most emotional and darkest DJ on the avant garde tech-house scene. An artist with academic training (a collaborator of Steve Reich) with a leaning towards the sounds of Richie Hawtin, Maurizio and Kenny Larkin. (http://www.dennisdesantis.com/) NUMB (live): Awaiting his next release, Numb continues to walk the fine line of strangeness devoid of shadows or threats. Breakbeats left right and centre signed in the most astounding Japanese calligraphy. (http://www.revirth.com/) HIROSHI WATANABE (dj): The closest aspirer to becoming the oriental Aphex Twin: children's melodies and soaring, frenetic and over the top rhythms, which renew concepts such as drill'n'bass and dizziness. (www.hiroshiwatanabe.com/) WHY SHEEP? (live): Third Ear's most best guarded secret. An intricate universe of advanced sounds and noises springing up from a transgressive spirit and a limitless desire for sound research. DJ KENTARO (dj): The undisputed winner of the latest World DJ Champions award, DJ Kentaro is a lethal cyclone possessing a prodigious technique that elevates turntablism to the status of art. (www.djkentaro.com/) SONARSOUND BY NIGHT 2: 13/10 ANGEL MOLINA (dj): At the height of his career (volume two of Wax Sessions is due to be released and highly respected by the crème de la crème of the world's Dj's), Angel continues to be an effective combination of techno, soul and precision. (http://www.minifunk.net/) YOSHINORI SUNAHARA (dj): A member of the disbanded Denki Groove, Y. Sunahara's record showcase opts for downtempo, muzak and exquisite ambient sounds. (www.y-sunahara.com/) ULRICH SCHNAUSS (live): Far Away Trains Passing by made a name for himself thanks to his extremely high voltage electronic melodies and his genius at conveying expression and pure emotion. Vicent Fibla releases clicky melodies from his spa.RK label for lovers of abstract electronics. (313) Fw: New Techasia Goodies...
ARTIST: TECHNASIA TITLE: RECREATIONS LABEL: TECHNASIA DISTRIBUTION: FORMAT: CD / LP CAT.NO. TA102CD RELEASE DATE: 15 NOVEMBER 2002 Technasia are the transglobal pairing of Amil Khan (Hong Kong) and Charles Siegling (Paris). You may already know or have heard several of the tracks on this album in their original versions, which have become classic dancefloor cuts across the globe. Tracks such as Force, Hydra, and Evergreen, are clear examples, with DJs such as Dave Clarke, Jeff Mills, Hell, Sven Vath and Laurent Garnier hammering them. Recreations is a remix album of some of Technasia finest work. Charles Amil deliver their reworkings of Force with the smoothest tech-house on 'Technasia Arpeggio mix', the funky 'Technasia Reprise mix', along side the tougher 'Evergreen' (Technasia Remix). Besides this fellow Technasia fans Funk D' Void (Soma), Claude Young (Deta), John Tejada (Pallette), and Brazil's Renato Cohen (aka Level 202, Noise Music, Sao Paulo) adding their own unique interpretations. Technasia's previous album, Future Mix, which was released at the end of last year, received massive critical acclaim and considerable commercial success. Further success soon followed, at the Musik Und Maschine awards in Berlin (2001), where Technasia took three accolades (including Best Album, for Future Mix) as voted for by techno and electronic luminaries around the world. So as you will hear, Technasia's impeccable pedigree is not based on over-rated hype. The largest explanation for the group's considerable popularity has to be their production talents evident in their unique sound. Taking cues from influences as diverse as Coil, Yellow Magic Orchestra, and Depeche Mode, as well as more conventional, house / techno producers, Technasia have carved a niche for themselves amidst a glut of bland tech-house. With an almost trademark knack of incorporating melody into their work (Melody!? Techno!? Whaaat!!??), and a polished sheen to even their most kicking of tunes, there is a remarkable amount of cross-over potential to their work. This year has seen Charles Siegling's DJ talents rise to the forefront of international acclaim. His Plus mix CD released December 2001, which was recorded live at Club Orange in Beijing, has increased the standard of DJ mix CDs. Charles blazes through 31 tracks of hi-tek funk with dextrous turntable skills that give the likes of Dave Clarke a run for their money. His DJ appearances have become sought after worldwide. Besides an incredible album Technasia are proud to announce that Recreations will be in the Enhanced Audio/Video CD format. Along with the cracking audio tracks (as featured on the promo copies) the final Enhanced CD will feature the much anticipated Force video specially created for the avid Technasia fans! The video is directed by a new talented Hong Kong art video director - Jason Pelmet. With Hong Kong cinema having a huge impact on the global cinema market, Jason puts forward a mystical journey into imageries in tune with the culturally rich vibrant city of Hong Kong. Combining quality techno with striking visuals, Recreations out soon on Technasia. CD Tracklisting 1- CROSSWALK (FUNK D'VOID REMIX) The Funk D'Void reworking sticks to the electroey momentum of the original, and usues some trademark deep pads to create an almost laidback mood. Midway through, the killer riff from the original drops in and takes the track to the next level, but Lars keeps the tone relatively relaxed. 2- EVERGREEN (JOHN TEJADA REMIX) Mr Tejada retains the padding tribal drums of the original track, but reworks the melodic aspects to great effect - adding some of his own chord changes to give the track a suitably original flavour, but still with enough kick for the floor. 3- FORCE (TECHNASIA REPRISE) Technasia's most popular tune to date gets a re-jig from the lads themselves. A moody piano weaves its way through the original's catchy hook, whilst Charles' distinct vocal is used sparingly. The rhythm section is completely revamped for a more electro flavour. 4- FUTURE MIX (TECHNASIA PREMONITION MIX) How do Technasia do it? Their tracks are so damn infectious, with hooks aplenty. This track's a great example of that. 'Future Mix' is given an overhaul that keeps all of the original's good qualities, but looks at it from a new angle - surely what good remixing is all about. 5- EVERGREEN (TECHNASIA REMIX) 'Evergreen' is given a once over with a straight up techno dynamic that's geared for the floor. The tinny, linear beats the have become a key feature of their productions betray a love of early Chicago house, particularly the Dancemania label, and this is evident in this pacey remix. 6- FORCE (TECHNASIA ARPEGGIO) This version makes full use of the Sumner-esque vocal, combined with some high-end keys that paint over the original chord-driven hook. 7- MILLENNIUMS (THE UNKNOWN) A new track that takes the listener through a lush, swirling synthesized soundscape. Beatless,

Just seen this. Laura and I had a bit of a disagreement on the list a few months back and I never met her in person - the extent of our releationship was some back'n'forth email over the last few years - but all the same I got the clear impression she was 100% committed, believed completely in what she did and said and I know she played her own vital role in this music. I'll remember her with respect. TOM

- Original Message - From: Richard Brophy Sent: Tuesday, September 17, 2002 10:24 AM Subject: DEAF Dear All, Sorry for the circular nature of this email. Here's some information about the first Dublin Electronic Art Festival (DEAF), launching today in Dublin. I have also included a schedule of acts confirmed to date, many more will be added in the run up to the festival. It's the first event of its kind to take place in Ireland and any support would be greatly appreciated - news stories, interviews etc. DEAF is an independently run festival. If you need any more information, just mail me back. Thanks Richard Brophy DEAF DUBLIN ELECTRONIC ART FESTIVAL OCTOBER SUNDAY 20th - OCTOBER MONDAY 28TH 2002 This October sees the first Dublin Electronic Arts Festival (DEAF) take place. DEAF will bring together Irish and international record labels, music promoters, musicians and visual designers to host various stages and showcases over 9 days, from October 20th to 29th inclusive. DEAF will become an essential annual event on the global calendar for electronic visual designers and music enthusiasts and will take place in numerous venues, bars and galleries throughout the city centre area. Over the past ten years electronic music has moved from its origins in Detroit and Berlin and its influence resonates through popular culture, evident in fashion, technology and the visual arts. Dublin was prematurely heralded as the 'dance capital of Europe', but in the intervening years has developed a flowering indigenous scene and currently boasts a healthy and diverse cross-section of underground producers, DJs and artists engaged in a never-ending succession of exciting projects. As such, the Irish scene has gained the confidence it needed to carve out its own identity and the time is right to provide a focus for this creative energy, to place Ireland's burgeoning scene in an international context. DEAF is the first Irish electronic music event to fully embrace these new opportunities. This first year will put Dublin on the map and will kick start an essential annual event on the global calendar for electronic music enthusiasts. DEAF will begin in IMMA featuring a collaboration with The Crash Ensemble, while other venues include The Guinness Storehouse, Ri-Ra, The Temple Bar Music Centre, 4, Dame Lane, The Crypt [Temple Theatre] and Parnell Mooneys. There will also be plenty of bar activity all week in The Thomas House, The Globe, The International Bar and Handels Bar. DEAF launches on Tuesday, September 17th in 4, Dame Lane, featuring a live performance from Dave Donoghue [D1 Recordings] and visuals from Pixelcorp, Click Fuselage, which will offer a taste of what to expect at the festival. [313] Fw: HELL presents ELECTRONICBODY-HOUSEMUSIC
ARTIST: VARIOUS COMPILED MIXED BY: HELL TITLE: ELECTRONICBODY - HOUSEMUSIC LABEL: REACT FORMAT: DOUBLE CD CAT NO: REACTCD226 RELEASE DATE: 28 OCTOBER 02 In 2002, more so than any other DJ of his stature, the records in Hell's box spoke volumes, and were preferably heard at great volume, in clubs, festivals and private gatherings throughout the world. The sharp-suited ambassador of the most glamorous sound around - the Gigolo style - he found himself at the vanguard of the much-hyped electroclash movement, the plastic electro-pop phenomenon that threatened to upset the mainstream. As usual, it was a case of everyone playing catch-up. By spinning the kind of records he's always played without compromise - a thrilling mix of the old and the new, of disco, punk, techno, rock, house and weird, trippy electro - Hell's position at the cutting-edge of dance music for over a decade, as a prescient underground icon, has never been questioned. That an entire scene would flourish around him is ample testament to his capacity as a cultural tastemaker. As Germany's leading DJ/label boss Hell's Gigolo style has spread the world over as the charges under his growing lexicon of Gigolos and Gigolettas have become stars in their own right - Miss Kittin The Hacker, Tiga, Crossover, Zombie Nation and of course Fischerspooner. Now the focus is back on the man who made it all happen. With his first mix CD since his universally acclaimed FUSE mix from Belgian's legendary techno club and Hell's first double mix outing, Hell not only shows the breadth and depth of his visionary scope but also stays well and truly ahead of the game. CD1 takes a more house route through the modern productions of some of today's best labels; joining the dots between UR, Environ, Playhouse, Perlon, Axis, Planet E and of course International Deejay Gigolos. CD2 on the other hand takes a twisted take on electro and spans several decades from the Belgian Nu-Beat powerhouse of late 80's 'EBM' (Electronic Body Music) with Nitzer Ebb and Front 242 to the electronic avant-garde of Chris Cosey (ex-Throbbing Gristle) and Liaisons Dangereuses to the new geniuses of the electro/techno hybrid monster; Terence Fixmer, David Carretta and Green Velvet showing that Hell is not only still the king of 'Electroclash' but also a man with a vision that goes well beyond such short-sighted confines. In mixing this double CD Hell has used the new Traktor DJ studio technology from Native Instruments (as used by Scion to re-arrange Basic Channel's back catalogue to devastating effect for Tresor's 100th release). Hell, as well as being a sharp dressing DJ maverick, is heavily interested in innovation and in this mix he plays with the contrast of a selection of classical tracks combined with a revolutionary mixing technique that breathes new life into the tracks by cueing, looping and filtering them in ways impossible with turntables or CD players. Bringing this combination of contrasting elements to the attention of the audience is, what makes this release unique compared to a normal Mix-CD with a nice selection of tracks. And to cap it all off, you know Hell's gonna be looking slick behind the decks in the latest Gucci giving it up, as ever, in true Gigolo style. But hey, enough yapping, stick the CD on and go straight to Hell! The double mix CD features tracks from Underground Resistance* / Metro Area / Jeff Mills / Nitzer Ebb / Green Velvet / Chris Cosey / David Carretta / Front 242 / Recloose / Derrick Carter / Justus Kohncke / Pantytec / Smith n Hack / Playgroup and many more *Please note track 1 on CD1 is 'Transition' by Underground Resistance and not 'Inspiration' as listed on the CD promo cover tracklist. [313] OT: Auto festival, UK
Hardly 313, but some techno content all the same and I figured this might well appeal to some UKers on the list. * AUTO Line up announced for major new festival Sat Dec 14 Magna, Sheffield Pulp, Röyksopp, Lemon Jelly, LFO, Four Tet, The Bees, Baxter Dury, James Yorkston, The Kills, Zongamin, Jamie Lidell, Chris Coco, Piano Magic, Trevor Jackson, Capitol K Leafcutter John, Optimo, Annie Timo, Bjorn Torske, SchneiderTM, I-Monster, Erland Oye, Asleep At The Wheel, Tony Morley, John Peel, Quixote visuals and Warp Films DJs Pulp's Steve Mackey has emerged as the brains behind one of the most innovative and ambitious live projects to be staged in Britain this year. Featuring an unrivalled selection of leftfield electronic and rock talent, together in one of our greatest palaces of former industry, Auto will exist in the same spirit as festivals like Barcelona's Sonar, which has in recent years have earned their own awesome reputations for creative booking and artistic invention. Conceptualised and realised by Mackey, Auto is also born out of frustration with the UK's stale and dead festival scene, which the bassist equates to the football transfer system, with big name players monopolising all the money and power, leaving a raw deal for the paying punters. Auto will, he says, offer something less hierarchical, and, in the process, reintroduce an element of unpredictability and surprise to proceedings. It is a testament to how well these sentiments travel that almost all participants at Auto have been prepared to offer their services for little more than expenses, with Röyksopp, for instance, relocating their own Sheffield show to appear at Auto with former Telle Records label mates Bjorn Torske and Annie Timo in a welcome Norwegian moment. Auto will be split into four arenas of entertainment for the night, running from 7pm - 2am, with things breaking down a little bit like this: Auto One Bjorn Torske, Röyksopp, Annie Timo, Pulp, John Peel, The Bees, Desperate Sound System, Baxter Dury, James Yorkston Auto Two (Warp and Eat Your Own Ears Stage) James Lidell, Mark Bell (LFO) DJ, Four Tet, Capitol K Leafcutter John, Warp DJs, Warp films, Quixote visuals Auto Three Lemon Jelly, SchneiderTM, I-Monster DJ, The Kills, Optimo DJ, Zongamin, Trevor Jackson DJ, Erland Oye (Kings of Convenience) Auto Four Chris Coco (Radio One Blue Room) DJ, Tony Morley (Leaf), Piano Magic DJ, Asleep At The Wheel DJs Auto's 3,500 tickets will go on sale next week for £30 each (www.ticketmaster.com). There are also plans to have cinema tie-in with the Showroom Cinema in Sheffield, with programmes being planned by Warp and Jarvis Cocker among others. This is not the first time Pulp have been involved at a hands-on level with forward-thinking festival planning. It may, in fact, be remembered that what turned into the V Festival was originally conceived by Pulp in 1996 as a means of getting all their favourite bands onto one bill in a nice setting. And then Richard Branson stepped in. The Magna centre is one of the country's most imaginatively converted post-industrial spaces. As the Templeborough Steelworks the nine storey, 350-metre long structure was the largest in Europe, housing 10,000 workers at its peak. In the year 2000 a £46m renovation was completed and in 2001 the Magna Science Adventure Park beat rivals such as the Eden Project for the prestigious RIBA Stirling Architecture Prize for the Best New Building in the UK. The entertainment at Auto will be presented cheek-by-jowl with such attractions as the Wild Fire, the Big Melt, the Tornado and Danger-Blasting! [313] Fw: System 12.09.02
- Original Message - From: Nick Craddock Sent: Wednesday, September 11, 2002 1:27 PM Subject: System 12.09.02 System 10-3am, weekly Thursdays @ Propaganda, 201 Wardour Street, London, W1 Thursday September 12th, with: Marco Carola (Zenit/Question) James Ruskin (Tresor/Blueprint) 65d Mavericks - Live (Surface/Blueprint) Presenting System - Marco Carola's new weekly club venture. Last week's System launch was a massive success, with London's techno massive turning out in full force to pack Propaganda and get on down to some excellent music. Three good reasons why the club will go from strength to strength was apparent in the residents team, with all three whipping up a storm in the main room. Special guest, Gaetano Parisio - who worked some three-deck magic to rapturous reaction, provided extra ammunition. Every Thursday, Marco and fellow System residents on rotation - Mark Broom and Terry Mitchell, will be giving Central London a dose of the best techno, electro and house around. This is the first time that Marco Carola has held a club residency in London, and he'll be making the most of the opportunity to showcase some world-class guest DJs and live acts from around the world - playing on a state of the art sound system in one of London's coolest venues. For this second event, System welcomes one of UK techno's leading lights along with an outfit that are surely rising stars. James Ruskin came to prominence in the mid-nineties - fast gaining a reputation as a talented DJ, with props attributed from the likes of Dave Clarke and Surgeon. The Blueprint imprint, which he established along with Richard Polson (see below) in 1996, will be familiar to most as a label that pushed British techno to the forefront of the international stage - along the way exposing fellow talents such as Oliver Ho. These days, James' hectic DJ schedule takes him across the world most weeks, but he still finds time for a production career - having release two full-length albums for Tresor as well as his debut for Blueprint. London appearances are a rare occurrence; so make the most of this opportunity to witness the skills. 65d Mavericks is a project created by Surface records founder and Blueprint records co-founder Richard Polson, and Nick Dunton - founder of Ebullition and a producer in his own right, who has worked under various guises in many different underground scenes over the last ten years or so. If you haven't heard of these guys yet, you will have soon. Their incendiary 'Defining The Symptom' doublepack is forthcoming on Blueprint, and they're fast getting a reputation as a live act to be reckoned with. During a recent gig at the Melkweg in Amsterdam, the room was being worked so hard that the crowd and even the following DJ wanted them to keep playing!
