Re: [313] Luke Slater the Pop princess

2002-03-15 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
> i agree totally. The thing that bothers me about all this electro just
blowing up right now is that it *is* just a fad. *sigh* i just don't know.
I don't mind dj's bringing in some of the older stuff into their sets, but
now everybody and their brother is moving to produce electro tracks. In all
honesty, i have to agree with richie on this one; as much fun as it is to
explore older ideas, they are still just older ideas. we're practically
digging up a rotting dead horse for one last kick in the nuts. I'm still
looking to see what's next.

- I'd have to disagree. First of all, it isn't really electro blowing up
right now, it's electro-pop - as in 'electronic pop', not electro as pop
music. People are already confusing the two, but it's an important
distinction. Stuff like Miss Kittin & The Hacker, Felix da Housecat etc
isn't electro, it's techno with a different attitude and sound. The likes of
Tiga are more electro, granted, but the vocals add the pop edge that the
purist electro doesn't have. Secondly, the people leading this scene are the
people who've been doing it for a while - I-F being the perfect example:
he's been pushing a kind of disco-tinged techno/electro sound for years.
Same with Dopplereffekt & many more of the electro crew - at it for years. I
think it's just that the climate is right now for this robotic, synthetic
pop sound -and by extension, for electro

With all due respect, the above statement about 'everybody & their brother'
makes it sound like every techno/electronic producer out there is suddenly
making electro instead. And they're not. People like The Advent and many
many more have been slipping electro onto their b-sides for years. Same with
the electropop producers - Hell et al have been doing it for years, it's
just now everyone has cottoned on. The(ahem) dogs are just having their day,
that's all.

I don't think electro is about 'older ideas' any more than techno is - look
at us, for example, all on this list discussing music for which the
blueprint was laid down just a few years after electro's was. Aren't we just
doing the same? Techno took up electro when hip-hop dropped it and has kept
it moving forward. In fact, you might say modern electro is more
forward-looking than techno right now: no-one makes electro tracks that go
'wicky-wicky-wack' any more, but plenty of people make still techno that
sounds like it came out of Detroit fifteen years ago. Which I don't have a
problem with per se, btw, as long as they do it well.

I also don't think the current electropop thing is as retro as people seem
to think it is. Which 80s band do Adult sound like, for example? I think
they just sound like Adult. I think people are confusing simplicity in the
music for retro. And even if people are looking backward, it's to the pop
side of things, not electro. And come to think of it, why not? Pop was
better then, with more character. Nowadays it's all just bullsh*t rap/r&b
(Oooh, a tabla! All hail King Timbaland!), 'garridge', euro trance drug toss
and nu-metal noisy rubbish. It's all cack. (Or am I just getting old?)
(Don't answer that).

Finally, 'Retro'/nostalgia is running through all aspects of the current
dance scene - there are 'ardcore nights going off in the UK, hip-hop
rediscovered its old school a few years ago with Jurassic, endless 'classic
house' compilations etc. Right now on UK TV they're advertising a classic
electro compilation. Good. About time 'the kids' learned there's more to
dance than what Radio 1 pump out.

Right, I'm done. For the moment. Now to try and install this damned
broadband software again. I may be some time...

Subject: Sonar 2002 Programme Preview

SONAR, 9th Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art of Barcelona
JUNE 13.14.15. 2002

SONAR 2002 PROGRAMME PREVIEW

For the ninth consecutive year, SÓNAR is once again an essential venue for
those wishing to discover the latest trends in electronic music. A meeting
point, highly receptive to the pulse of the avant-garde, that offers to a
varied public the formats of a sound laboratory, a leisure area, a museum, a
conference and professional convention hall. Music, audiovisual arts,
digital creation and thought converge in this absolutely essential event.

As in previous editions, SÓNAR once again anticipates and offers a detailed
scan of avant-garde creation of our times and opens the way to proposals
that have a specific and seminal impact on electronic culture. The programme
is open, rich in nuances and for another consecutive year embraces different
artistic manifestations (music, film and electronic art), patent testimony
to the ever increasing promiscuity amongst disciplines.

Sound manipulation and rhythm research, the new forms of landscaping and a
spirit for experimentation are the defining characteristics of a new
generation of artists whom SÓNAR BY DAY has opted for. The repertoire of
artists -Cex, Dntel, Lali Puna, Donna Regina, Static, Isan, Wobbly, Balago-
come from fields such as indie, pop, experimentation or contemporary music,
and coincide in their use of digital tools with which they produce pieces
beyond classification by means of microscopic sounds, glitches and abstract,
highly emotive melodies.

Within the music programme of SÓNAR2002, the showcases and SONARLAB standout
once again as presentation formats for the work of record labels and
artistic collectives. In this editions SÓNAR will offer an overview of the
productions and latest releases of renowned international labels -Morr
Music, City Centre Offices, Staalplaat, Karaoke Kalk- with special emphasis
on the Californian electronic scene represented by Musork, Tigerbeat6 and
Plug Research. Special mention must be given to the participation of record
labels from countries that normally have limited resources for promoting
their national production such as Escuadrón Sudaca (Venezuela).

Convinced that leisure and experimentation are not necessarily antagonistic,
SÓNAR BY NIGHT once again opts for a programme full of stylistic nuances
that go beyond the usual club context. Its three stages -SONARCLUB,
SONARPARK Y SONARPUB- will offer very adventurous proposals such as Andy
Votel or Sirconical as well as great names of dance music such as Richie
Hawtin, Carl Cox or Óscar Mulero. Other highlights are the appearance of the
kings of techno-pop Pet Shop Boys, the live soundtrack from the film by
Jean Painlevé "The Sounds of Science" which will be interpreted by Yo La
Tengo, and the dj set performed by the British Alison Goldfrapp.

Although SÓNAR dedicates most of its programme to concerts and Dj's, the
rest of its activities are directly linked to musical creation either
through their implicit subject matter or because various artistic
disciplines coexist in the same support. All the activities combined in
their diversity, and especially SonarMatica, the multimedia area, are
fundamental ingredients that endow the festival with character, variety and
a differentiated personality.

After having previously presented the creative realities of Barcelona,
Berlin and London, SONARMÁTICA2002 now turns its eye to Helsinki. A guided
tour through the most breakaway and original activities that take place in
the Scandinavian capital, with a special emphasis on the area of digital
creation and new technologies. In this section, some of the highlights are
the installations of Tommi Grönlund and Petteri Nisunen as well as the works
of the Katastro.fi collective, one of the most influential and innovative
multimedia art platforms on the European scene.

Re: [313] Luke Slater the Pop princess

2002-03-14 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
Well, I really like the album, although it took a few plays. I think the new
single, 'Nothing At All' is about the weakest track on there though (rubbish
mixes too), so try not to write it off because of that. He's got the former
singer from The Aloof doing vocals on most of the tracks and Carl Finlow
(SCSI/20:20/Voicestealer etc) had some input too. Only 3 or 4 of the tracks
could be said to be actual electropop anyway, as opposed to pop, which is a
description he's comfortable with. I've interviewed him for the Slut (next
issue) about it and he said one track was kind of a personal tribute to
Visage. He's wound up Planetary Assault Systems permanently now, though.

[313] Fw: Warp Magic Bus Tour

2002-03-14 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
In May this year Warp will be closing the office and heading for the open
road in what will be the first ever Warp Records collective tour. We will be
travelling around Europe in a specially constructed 'magic bus', which we
have commissioned artist Alex Rutterford to design.

This tour will feature a string of amazing shows, with a strong online
presence, unique visuals and will include exclusive Warp Films screenings.
A special 'Magic Bus' site will be updated regularly as the tour progresses
and exclusive merchandise and a 'Warp Magic Bus' CD will be available.

Our intention is that the shows will halt time and space and allow people to
experience the 'magic' that has kept Warp pushing the boundaries of music
and art over the last 12 years. We see this tour as an opportunity to
directly connect with the many people around Europe who have been moved by
our music.
This "magic" will be used for one of the purposes it was originally created
for, to draw humans into the moment, and remind us that life is a complete
fu*king miracle.

Label boss Steve Beckett and some of the artists will be available for
interviews before and during the tour. In addition mixes will be available
for radio promotion and it will be possible to record some of the shows.

Up to the minute information can be found at www.warprecords.com/tour - this
will include details of our soon to be confirmed leaving party in London.

[313] Arpanet

2002-03-11 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
Just received a new Dataphysix/Dopplereffekt-related LP project:

Arpanet: Wireless Internet (Virgin)
Released 22/4/02 (UK)

It's all themed around the idea of wireless communication and after a couple
of listens I'd say it was pretty good, apart from the truly terrible spoken
intro. Very Dopplereffekt/Japanese Telecom, really, but slightly distinct as
well.

On Virgin though, I wasn't expecting that.

Also found a cool bass 12" by the Unknown DJ on Techno Kut for £1. I love

[313] Fw: Leftfield RIP (OT)

2002-03-05 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
Thought some people might be interested in this, if they haven't already
heard...

(In a pathetic, desperate effort to keep on topic, did Leftfield ever get
remixed by any 313 artists? I can't think of any meself.)

Sent: Monday, March 04, 2002 4:55 PM
Subject: Leftfield RIP

For Immediate Release

LEFTFIELD R.I.P

After 12 years of sonic experimentation, Paul Daley & Neil Barnes have
decided to pull the plug on Leftfield. Both parties will be pursuing solo
projects so Leftfield fans should not be down hearted. This should be seen
as a new beginning in an on going process.

The platinum selling duo have been responsible for re-defining dance music,
as well as producing and remixing artistes from John Lydon to Roots Manuva
to David Bowie. They have decided to end the partnership amicably after
they felt it could not be taken any further.

Formed in 1990 with the release of the seminal 'Not Forgotten' single,
Leftfield's career is a list of formidable achievements. The famous duet
with John Lydon on 'Open Up' caught the mood of the nation and the impact of
their debut 'Leftism' album, released in January 1995, was seismic. It is
still referred to as the greatest dance album of all time. Their platinum
selling follow-up 'Rhythm And Stealth' debuted at number one and featured
the mighty 'Phat Planet' single. Their live show with its famous sound
system helped to redefine the role of live dance music and after gigs
throughout Europe, they are still officially the loudest band ever to play
Brixton Academy. The remix work in the early party of their career and the
success of their own Hard Hands label should also be keenly remembered.

Leftfield. Gone but not forgotten.

Paul Daley - "Thanks to everyone from fans to promoters to DJ's and to
listeners who have supported us over the years. THIS IS NOT THE END!"

Neil Barnes - "Leftfield was always about pushing the boundries of sound as
far as we could. I'm pround to be a part of this. Thanks to all the people
we have worked with over the years and to everyone that promoted & bought
our records. THE END IS JUST THE BEGINNING."

[313] Mills & Peel - the dirty truth revealed on UK TV

2002-03-05 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
Anybody in the UK see 'Room 101' on BBC2 last night? For those that don't
know it, the show is all about well-known people talking about their pet
hates in an effort to persuade the presenter (Paul Merton) to consign them
to oblivion in the imaginary Room 101.

Anyway, last night John Peel was the guest celebrity and at one stage he was
talking about - and I forget why - beards. What he said went something like
this (from memory):

"Usually I look much better with a beard, but there's a terrible photo of
me, which I think I have the only copy of, fortunately. You see, there's a
wonderful DJ called Jeff Mills and last year I was at a festival in
Barcelona - Sonar, it's called, a dance music thing - and I had my photo
taken with my arm round Jeff's shoulders. He's quite a short man, you see.
But I'd had a few drinks and somehow my beard looked so dishevelled that in
the photo I look like some kind of sex tourist with my arm round my latest
'find'. I look like I'm about to say something like 'Look at the little
poppet I picked up!'"

Well, it made me laugh anyway.

Their guests on the night were DERRICK MAY and KEVIN SAUNDERSON - two of
Detroit's legendary 'Belleville Three'. Playing back to back, the pair gave
a master class in crowd rocking - a history lesson in classic material,
melded with the finest cutting edge examples of this music we call techno.
This year, DERRICK MAY returns. How often do you hear the phrase 'needs no
introduction'? - this has rarely been truer than with this man - TRANSMAT
founder, the man behind the RHTYHIM IS RHYTHIM project, life-changing DJ.
true Innovator. Derrick will be accompanied by fellow pioneer, 'MAGIC' JUAN
ATKINS - the third member of the infamous Motor City triumvirate. From his
earliest production classics with CYBOTRON and MODEL 500, the path of techno
is inseparable from that of JUAN ATKINS. LOST are pleased to have him back

Derrick and Juan in the RED room will be STEVE BICKNELL. Steve's current

BURUNDI parties. A core member of the Restless Soul collective, he is often
referred to as the Godfather of the broken beat scene. Expect a set of
proper house music, presented in his inimitable fashion. He will be joined

[313] Fw: Jeff Mills: Archiv 4

2002-02-26 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
Artist: Jeff Mills
Title: Late Night
Label: Tresor
Ca. No: 56183-6
Release: April 2002
Distribution (UK): SRD

 TRACKLIST

A1 "Late Night" (Mills Mix)(4:49)
A2 "Late Night" (4:39)
B1 "Basic Human Design" (5:52)

The Tresor Archiv series continues to roll on, unearthing previously
unavailable or deleted material from the depths of the vault.

This latest release features a long-missing track from Jeff Mills - a remix
of the classic "Late Night" from 1993. The original version appeared on
Mills' debut album "Waveform Transmission Vol. 1" (1992!), but his "Mills
Mix" remix has remained one of Tresor's most infamous 'lost tracks'. It is
believed that the last DAT of the remix was destroyed in a Chicago basement
flood. However, in October 2001, the track was re-mastered by Moritz Von
Oswald at Berlin's Dubplates & Mastering. This is the first time this
long-lost Classic has been available on Tresor.

The B-Side "Basic Human Design" is actually an instrumental version of
"Spider Formation" (from Axis Records AX-009), originally found on "Waveform
Transmission Vol. 3" but mastered and cut at D&M; Berlin by Moritz Von
Oswald (one half of Maurizio).

*** Jeff Mills' "Late Night" (Mills Mix) also appears now for the first
time on CD format via "Tresor - True Sprit" (Tresor 185, ca.no. 56185-2).

Jeff Mills plays Homelands on 1st June.

LATE NIGHT: meaning deep or deeper in the night.

Mid-Town Manhattan, New York, the summer of 1993 shortly after I moved from
Detroit. I just started my DJ residency on Friday nights at the Limelight
called "Future Shock." As I was beginning to get used to the rush of New
York, my tensions from culture shock of moving from Detroit, a smaller city
with less than a million people to New York City, the Metropolis, I had
began to relax again as my fondness for those infamous New York Nights was
beginning to grow. It was a unique time. The sound of Rotterdam was the
favorite Techno style, the beats were dark, fast and lethal but, still
green. It was the summer: DJ Hell and Patrick Pulsinger had moved to
Manhattan and every week, the Limelight was in competition with the
Palladium and flew in Techno Artists from Europe to perform. I can remember
a lazy afternoon Richard (Aphex Twin) and crew flew in from London and all
of us eating takeaway barbecue chicken on the roof of Lord Mike's apartment.
Then, the daytime was only a cocktail for the night.

In those days on Friday night, the Limelight would reach its high intensity
level around 3:00am onward until the end of the night. High meaning, full
capacity, swinging cage dancers, the rave flares of Authur's odyssey
lightening and the ritual microphone introductions by Romeo Romeo were in an
extreme level. As for the music program, it was the honorable duty of DJ
Repete and myself to keep the beats right. What I loved the most was later
in the night, around 5:30am. The time when the out-of-town tourists and the
club trendy had tired left the dancefloor, the music we played got a bit
more daring, a lot deeper and all existing dancers on the dancefloor were
more alert and sensitive to new sounds. It was the feeling of this
timeframe that I tried to capture through the track "Late Night."

In those days of my transition from Detroit to New York and not exactly
aware of my permanent living situation, I was a bit reluctant to move all
of my studio and equipment to New York at one time. So, from each weekly
trip back to Detroit to fulfill my duties at Underground Resistance, I began
to take one piece of equipment at a time. My ability to create the
more complex tracks was gradual and slow. Nevertheless, within the weekdays
I would have the enormous urges to compose music so, I would try to record
with what I had at the time. Which was only a Roland 16 track mixer, Yamaha
DX100 keyboard, Yamaha Sequencer, Roland TR-909 drum machine, no monitor
return speakers (I mixed through headphones) and one of those new gadgets, a
portable DAT recorder that I bought down on Canal Street in SOHO. The day I
purchased the DAT recorder was a productive one, I remember recording about
15 tracks within a few hours, "Late Night" among other Waveform Transmission
Vol. 1 tracks were created on this evening.

Unsatisfied with the beginning of the only mix of "Late Night", I can
remember deciding to fade in the level from silence for an introduction,
thus discovering a technical trait that I was use on numerous tracks in my
recording career. Tresor Records, Berlin later released this track on
Waveform Transmission Vol. 1 a few months later with a later sublicense to
Pow Wow Records in the US. The Pow Wow Records remixes included a few DJ
Pierre mixes as well as a more aggressive remix by myself.

BASIC HUMAN DESIGN: meaning the most basic form of human.
(1 head w/brain, two arms and two legs). Can't remember the year but, it was
at the beginning of the first wave of TechnoTrance. I was spending lots of
time in Germany, Switzerland and France at the time. Guys like Cosmic

[313] Rother

2002-02-22 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
Not sure if this was mentioned, but given the recent talk of him on here,
here's some info I just received about the Psi49Net comp coming this or next
month:

ANTHONY ROTHER pres.
ELEKTRO COMMANDO/WELCOME TO PSI CITY3xLP/CD
(PSI49NET - LABEL COMPILATION)

Now here is what all die hard electro heads have waited for: 'Electro
Commando 1 - Welcome To Psicity'. Anthony Rother and Germany's most prolific
electro label PSI49Net finally open their vaults to present the ultimate
electro collection of new and unreleased material. Two CDs, 25 tracks (most
of them unreleased!), introducing lots of new LITTLE talent and projects as
well as some of the recent highlights that have gained the label such an
enormous reputation worldwide. Both as an artist/producer and a&r for the
label, Anthony Rother once again proves to be the man with the midas touch
and the driving force of the genre. 'Electro Commando 1' includes some of
the greatest moments of the label's discography such as Rother's very own
remix of "Little Computer People", his visionary and genre defying
"Simulationszeitalter", "Froyd's "Kleiner Engel", and on top of that some
excerpts of the highly acclaimed Netzwerk series (Netzwerk Florida, Netzwerk
Europa and Netzwerk Frankfurt). And if these were not enough to put together
a compilation more than worthy, this double cd offers more than fifteen
unreleased tracks! Regarding these new projects CD 1 starts off with Rother'
s anthemic 'Psicity' title tune, followed by truly refreshing material by
upcoming artists such as Psylocity (check out their breathtaking "machine"),
Labor E, Christian Berg, Boris Divider and Studio 3, to be completed by
Rother's much sought after "God Of The Gods". The second CD features not
only the newest Netzwerk Frankfurt outing entitled "A661", Psylocity's
haunting "Psylocity and Friends" and Froyd's weird "Weisses Rauschen
(Psych. Mix), but also great efforts by Anthony's new signings Mulletronic,
Frequenzberater, Növö, Si-Com (with an impressing slo mo-electro cut called
"Lost Pli") and Muzzfuzz ("Like You", simply beautiful!) that will
definitely create a buzz within the worldwide electro community. PSI49Net is
proud to welcome these new inhabitants to downtown and uptown Psi City. A
turning point for Anthony Rother and his label, and a must have release for
all hardcore PSI-followers as well as fans of electronic music in general.
Essential!

I've got it, I loved it and gave it for Jockey Slut's March ish. Very
funky minimalism, with Isaac Hayes samples in there. I'd recommend it. It's
on Novamute, btw, with a robot dog on the cover.

I also have The Black Dog LP but haven't got around to it yet... if I do
I'll try and post a reaction (even though it's not exactly 313 related,
although come to think of it, neither is Brinkmann!).

Re: [313] Rob Hood mix CDs?

2002-02-20 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
It's called Caught In The Act: Robert Hood Mix and it's on Logistic Records,
from France. I dunno when it's out because the promo they sent me didn't
come with any info, in fact it might be out already, but check
www.logisticrecords.com.

It's got about 12 Hood trax out of 27 altogether and is bookended by a
couple of Wu-Tang kung-fu dialogue samples. It's also very full on and full
speed, but very impressively mixed.

[313] car boot purchases

2002-02-14 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
Picked up a few interesting things at car boot sales & secondhand stores
recently, and not one cost more than 50p!

Model 500: True Techno EP (Network 1992)
- The run-out bears the inscription 'True techno not breakbeat heresy'! Bit
inflammatory or what?

Techno 2: The Next Generation (10)
- only on tape, but a top compilation album nonetheless.

Icon: Generator/So Special (Rham!)
- bought this because I knew A Guy Called Gerald released through Rham!
Unfortunately it turned out to suck, bigtime.

Teutonic Beats Vol 2 (EG 1989)
- picked this up because I noticed names like Westbam, Moritz Von Oswald,
Jorg Burger, Wolfgang Voight (Mike Ink), Din (the Chain Reaction guy?) and
Thomas Fehlmann on there, plus a nodto Alex Paterson, but it turned out to
be a load of dreadful piano rave nonsense. Proof if it were ever needed that
everyone goes through a learning curve! Anyone elseheard it?

Cabaret Voltaire: Keep On remixes (Parlophone/EMI)
- includes Mayday mix!

Also bought a 7" of Musique 'In The Bush' with a Francois K remix, Donna
Summer, Hamilton Bohannen... all good stuff!

squeezing all those tracks listed for the CDs onto eight sides of vinyl!

[313] Fw: Tresor : True Spirit

2002-01-30 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
Tresor presents.
TRUE SPIRIT
FEATURING EXCLUSIVE, UNRELEASED, AND DELETED TRESOR CLASSICS FROM JEFF
MILLS, MAURIZIO, JOEY BELTRAM, BLAKE BAXTER, MODEL 500 AND MANY (MANY) MORE.

 Artist: VARIOUS
Title: TRUE SPIRIT
Label: TRESOR
Cat. No: 56185-2/6
Distribution: SRD (UK)
Release: 25 MARCH 2002

Tresor: A Decade of Techno History. TRUE SPIRIT is the definitive historical
guide of the Berlin label's vital contributions to the Electronic
Underground. The exclusively designed digi box includes a 48-pages booklet
with details about the history of Tresor club and label, the artists, photos
and tracks. The three CDs and two double-EPs of TRUE SPIRIT present the
label's greatest moments featuring first-ever CD appearances of previously
vinyl-only tracks by Jeff Mills, Model 500 aka Juan Atkins, Joey Beltram,
The Advent, Blake Baxter and Surgeon as well as hard to find classics by
Underground Resistance/X-101, Maurizio, Cristian Vogel, Marshall Jefferson,
K.Hand, Eddie Flashin' Fowlkes, Robert Hood, Neil Landstrumm, 3MB and Bam
Bam. 38 tracks (3.5 hours!) of pure Techno and House from one of the most
influential labels in Electronic music ever.

Of note to all Tresor fans and music collectors will be the exclusive,
previously unreleased Jeff Mills track 'The Hypnotist' and first-time
appearances of Mills' 'Late Night (Mills Mix)', Joey Beltram's 'Ball Park
(DJ Rush First Bass Mix)', the Tiny Robot (aka Daniel Bell) debut, Mike
Dearborn's rare remix of Joey Beltram's 'Game Form', Optic Nerve's
'Premonition', K.Hand's 'Mystery' and many more hard-to-find and extremely
rare collector titles.

To mark the release of this monumental compilation, Tresor will be
celebrating fittingly in the manner they know best - throwing a four day
party between March 13-16th. Artists confirmed at this stage include DJ
Rush, Neil Landstrumm (live), Dave Tarrida (live), Daniel Bell and Joey
Beltram.

Re: [313] Glastonbury homepage

2002-01-29 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
Oops! The URL Colette meant to give was
http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/

I am planning to go to Glasto this year, as it happens (and would urge
anyone who hasn't been to go at least once in their life too), and would
indeed love to see the 'Werk there, but the fact is there are rumours every
festival season about them appearing here there and everywhere. If I
remember right, they were supposed to appear at the last couple of Sonars,
for example. I'm just glad I got to see them at Tribal Gathering a few years
ago.

Personally I enjoyed Alex's post, if only for the outstanding use of the
word 'bobbins', one of my favourite English colloquialisms and one I've
hardly heard since the great days of Madchester. Discuss.

And if you ask me, he's right about that garage/2-step bobbins too. So Solid
my a**e. Bunch of TWOCers, the lot of 'em. Oops... :-)

Re: [313] The Headstart eFlyer 26/01/02 / Octave 1

2002-01-22 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
Blackwater is getting a UK release through a label called Concept and has
big name DJs like Rampling etc playing it, which is why it's thought it may
chart. I think it's out here next week. Good news for those that still want
to buy it 'cos it'll be cheaper.

I thought the Saunderson remixes were OK, but I preferred the original
myself. You can't beat a good vocal techno anthem, though.

Re: [313] FA: ebay spam (Shari Vari 2x12 White Label)

2002-01-15 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
Try as I might, I can't see the problem here. The guy's paid for the record,
so it's his to do with as he likes: sell, give away, review, use as frisbee,
whatever. He could snap it over his knee if he felt like it, that's his
right. Loads of people buy and sell records for a living, that's part of the
scene, just as it it is in all other musical genres. In fact, they provide a
real & valued service to collectors. Someone somewhere will buy this from
him and be glad of it, and if they do pay more than the shop price (which
can vary wildly from store to store anyway) no-one will have twisted their
arm and they will probably consider it worth it anyway in order to get a
promo copy of a major release. Finally, it's not like he's stopping anyone
else owning it - anyone who wants it will have the opportunity to buy it
upon its official release.

If someone IS at fault here then maybe it's the store Matthew bought his
white from. Did they pay for their promo? My understanding is that some
distributors/labels charge shops for promos, some don't. If they didn't,
then they are the ones making a dodgy profit (and even then I wouldn't knock
'em for it, it's hard enought to make a living selling this music and to a
large extent they - the shops - are the ones keeping it alive and viable).
If they did, then surely everyone - label/artist, distributor, shop,
customer - got their piece of the pie? And it ain't often that happens.

Fact: pretty much every DJ, journo etc out there sells on their unwanted
promos, 99% of which will have been unsolicited anyway. It's part of the
biz. That's all.

Flame on.

Re: [313] drexciya LP

2002-01-11 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
My first thoughts were similar, that it was OK and no more, but repeated
listening gradually changed my mind. I think it needs really careful
attention to be appreciated fully, but now I've come to the conclusion that
it's really good. It's all in the detail, basically, and a step up
production-wise, too.

I just received Fabrice Lig's LP on F Com on promo, it's coming out in
mid-March. Had quite a few tasty things recently, actually, really must post
up a list...

Dunno about distribution on the Puzzlebox release, but it looks like Hell
has jumped in and licensed it for Gigolo, so that should be easy enough to
pick up when it arrives as G releases are widely available. Full Gigolo

Re: [313] Pump up the Volume

2001-11-28 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
Yeah, best thing on TV about this ever! I was surprised no-one commented on
last week's 2nd segment (mind you, neither did I...) seeing as that was
where Detroit came into play. Having said that, Derrick May and Kevin
Saunderson were both featured but Juan Atkins wasn't mentioned at all. Also
interesting about last week's was a former UK Chief Constable admitting that
the police wilfully broke the law to try and stop parties going off.

Last night's was pretty much excellent too, although you could tell that the
timeline (1990-present) had been extended because the made some pretty big
jumps. I think they gave the Happy Mondays rather too much credit for
'bringing house to the masses' early on, for one thing and I really don't
think that that Leftfield/Lydon record was anywhere near as important as
they made it seem. What struck me about the part about Beltram and 'Energy
Flash' was that it was a good example of how a record could get noticed
initially for its novelty value - the 'Ecstasy' sample - but then go on to
be recognised as a classic for its musical qualities.

And if there's one club I regret never going to, it's Rage. Watching last
night's programme reminded me that I gave my copy of Goldie's 'Terminator'
to a now ex-girlfriend! It was also interesting when Goldie said that his
whole thing at one time was to freak out Derrick May wth his music. And
Pierre made a good point about music and sounds being "like shareware", so
he was happy that other people had picked up on his ideas and done them
their own way. Finally, Daniel Pemberton's title music was cool too - very
reminiscent of brittle early Chicago house.

Yup, best house programme ever without a doubt. Unfortunately I didn't video
it, I can't. I would imagine that it will be repeated soon on E4, though, as
it's had a very positive reaction in general, so there's the chance for
someone to get it all on tape and get a copy off to, um, whoever it was on
this list who said they could convert the tape for US machines.

TOM

NP: David Donohoe: First Course In Hygiene (D1) - good stuff.

labeled as a techno producer after making Energy Flash and that to him it
was just a house tune. I think it really says a lot for the New York sound
of the time. When I interviewed Frankie Bones he said that none of the music
from Detroit really began to filter into NY until the early 90s and that all
the early Nu Groove stuff that they all did really was concieved in
isolation from techno.

Re: [313] Hot Lizard-the theme

2001-11-26 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
Just to correct a couple of details: Hot Lizard were Nottingham DJs Paul
Wain and Gary Marsden while Pacific was owned by Justin Deighton. Justin has
a new mix CD coming out on a label called Product Deluxe (which I am
guessing he owns now instead of Pacific) that includes 'The Theme', so maybe
he's planning to re-release it. It'll be worth watching the new label if
only because he used to have a knack of persuading some excellent producers
to contribute remixes - Claude Young being another example.

Right, let's have a blast of this here new Drexciya album...

Re: [313] For those in the U.K.

2001-11-14 Thread Tom Robbins/Tom Magic Feet
Yeah, it was cool. What I particularly liked was that all the talking heads
used (Marshall Jefferson, Chip E, Derrick May, Larry Sherman, Earl Smith,
various clubgoers etc) were people who were actually there and part of it,
not just pundits and commentators. The narrative was a bit overblown
occasionally, though.

I think the last quarter, which as I remember followed the section about
house's transition to vinyl via Jesse Saunders' 'On And On', was basically
about Phuture discovering acid and Marshall Jefferson releasing 'Move Your
Body'. The argument was that House was now poised to - dum dum der! - take
over the world!

On the whole, they stuck to the main players/clubs: Disco, Paradise
Garage/NYC, Warehouse/Knuckles, Muzic Box/Ron Hardy (I never knew Muzic Box
was spelled with a Z), Trax, Jesse Saunders/Vince Lawrence, Marshall J etc.

My favourite bit was when Saunders and Lawrence told how they went down to a
record shop with a thousand copies of 'On And On' and offered them to the
buyer. They expected to sell the guy a few copies and to have to haggle over
the price; instead he took them all at the price they named. "He wrote out a
cheque for $4000 on the spot. We went back outside, got in the car and
screamed!"

I'll be watching next week. By the way, I'll be getting all the music
channels on cable soon - what, if any, shows cater to the
underground/electronic/dance fan?
