[313] 3 chairs

2002-05-14 Thread alex.bond
Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

Someone asked what the 3 Chairs thing was like in Sheffield.

It was ace. (from what I can remember) Those boys somehow go from Disco to
House to Techno to Funk and make it all sound so effortless. Right up my
street.

Things I remember hearing;

Stevie Wonder - Do I do
Parliament - Hydraulic Pump
Model 500 - No UFO's
J.A.N
Some old hard and dark Ron Hardy tackle
Patrick Adams - LoveBug
The Strikers - Body Music

Erm, and that's about all I can remember, the beer was flowing.

Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

I've organised a bus from Manchester to Sheffield for the Theo
Parrish/Kenny Dixon Jnr/Rick Wilhite thing on Saturday.

All are welcome, the coach will be leaving Cord Bar (just off Tib St) at
around 7.30pm, returning from Sheffield at 4.30 am, back in Manchester by 6
am I reckon.

The cost is around £15 return, the more that come, the cheaper it will be.
Not bad for getting taken there and picked up outside me thinks. This is
also a co-op thing, no profits, everyone just pays their way.

There's 20-odd of us so far, and we have a 48 seat coach, so there's loads
of space if there's a large group of you.

Manchester peeps, this is the best way if you're not driving, I've checked
the public transport and it's sh**e. Liverpool peeps - this might be worth
your while, the coach from L'Pool to Manchester is a fiver return and is
once an hour.

Once again, all welcome, we'd like to fill it if we can. There's loads of
different people going, not all of whom no each other, so don't worry if
you're on your own, we're all a friendly lot! Please mail me back if you're
interested today and then find out about numbers tonight or something.
First come first served.

Apologies to those who live miles away etc.
Thanks,

Alex.

Was it on this list that someone said that Mills was to change his DJ style
from now on?

I'm sure he'd said he was going to play different stuff, was there any of
that going on last night?
Was thinking on checking him in Manchester, but if he's going to go through
the old routine I'll keep my money in my pocket I think.

That 'do' last night sounded good, shame as always that these things can't
be done out of London as well, but never mind. Us un-cultured types up here
might not have understood the concept of shutting up for more than 15
minutes at a time..!

Oh yeah, so it is ... apologies, don't mind me - but I still like the film,
the edit & JM's score for the same reasons. But whatever.

Anyway, what did you think of Mills' set/djing? ... I thought it was nice
to
have a little bird's eye view of what he was doing for a change! Man, he's
fast! - although I noticed a few hiccups, as for the content, hmmm ... I
thought he'd moved on but of course, I bopped along all the same...

Metro Area has to be one of the best live sets I've ever seen, if not THE
best. The only thing that could make the experience better is if there was
a
live string accompaniment. now THAT would be heavenly.

Hello list!

Just back from the Metro Area live act in Frankfurt. Wow, they did an
amazing set even though somebody unplugged the notebook and there was
an
interruption for some minutes!
The crowd went nuts and the dancefloor was on fire. Reeally great
party!

What are your experiences with Metro Area live

I LOVE THEM!!

Cheers, Arne

P.S.: Greetings to the Technotourists Otto and Hans! Hopefully you had a

[313] theo's mix of Jill Scott

2002-04-25 Thread alex.bond
Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

Anyone feeling friendly today?

I'd love a copy of that Jill Scott mix that Theo did.
I know it's hassle but if anyone could pick me up a copy from Record Time
or Rick Wilhites store I'd be very very grateful.
I could pay via paypal.

I could do a swap for a rare UK item or anything!
I don't have $100 either to buy one from e-bay.

Cheeky, I know, but it had to be worth asking.

Hmm, while we're on the subject,

Lee Insync was a very good dj, I remember many a good record being played
by him.
I have a vivid memory of a new years eve Lost, (1994?) at an old ice cream
factory in Battersea, I remember him playing 'Search your feelings' by
M500/Martian and me going absolutely bonkers.

When I used to have the club, I was always saying, oh, we need to get Lee
Insync to play, never realising that Lee Grainge and Lee Insync were the
same person. D'oh! and in fact Lee Grainge did play at our club.

Are they deffo the same person? I'd be interested

Re: [313] kraftwerk bookies?

2002-04-17 Thread alex.bond

Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

Hmm, books of this sort are a bit hit and miss and very much depend on the
authors opinions. I just finished reading a new-ish book about Talking
Heads, which was enjoyable, but by the end of it I was sick of the authors
apparent obsession with David Byrne, as opposed to the overall band.

Knowing that this is JUST their opinion is something that I don't always
consider automatically when picking up a book, (as opposed to a magazine or
newspaper article) for some reason I always expect it to be more well
researched and an un-bias view. I know this is down to my stupidity, but I
dunno, I just expect them to be more valid pieces of journalism for some
reason.

That Tim Barr used to be the editor? of a magazine in England, the name of
it escapes me, but the reason I remember is because my mate wrote a very
long article on Robert Hood for it and shortly after they went bust, and I
don't think he ever got paid for it. He was an excellent journalist though,
if only because there were only a couple of people in England at the time
(Magic Feet was just starting too) pushing some of the "2nd/3rd wave"
Detroit guys into the media, and he was probably the most high profile guy,
so therefore his articles were always a couple of pages long, and, of
course I was fascinated to read anything about anyone from Detroit.

Anyway, my point is that I don't think the guy deserves a slating, in fact
I think he might deserve a few props, especially from some of the Detroit
guys who he gave valuable column inches to. Maybe he just bit off a little
more than he could chew writing a WHOLE book about just one band, I applaud
him for trying anyway.

I'd agree with Seth here, but would add that Bussy's book is nothing more
than anecdotal, and does not reveal anything of worth to the average
Kraftwerk fan. But then again, not being able to interview either Ralf or
Florian doesn't help much when it comes to original material. Flur's book
is
amusing, but I couldn't help but get the feeling that he was just gutted
when they got rid of him. Perhaps what all the books do is help carry on
their own enigmatic myth.

It was me that made that first comment.

I didn't mean for it to sound how it came out I think! (typical for me)

I would dearly love to go, if only for the experience and to meet people
from the 313 list, go diggin for records etc.
It's just that it is a LOT of money to go from here, with a flight,
accomodation etc. I have little cash as it is, and hopefully I'll be able
to put it to some better use.

I think maybe the line-up will put a few european heads off, and that's not
meant to be detrimental to anyone who's on the bill, it's just that there's
quite a few names missing. Thing is, I can hardly bear to miss it either
cos I like the sound of those after parties!

No stories after the event of how good it was are allowed ! In fact, I'm
not going to read any more DEMF posts and just pretend it's not happening!

[313] Lowland 313ers

2002-04-15 Thread alex.bond

Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

Weird, I was going to post something like this this morning.

In Manchester there is a place where you can get 500 12's with a one colour
label and a plain sleeve for £770.
I was talking to a guy from here who has put a couple of things out and he
was telling me that there was a (or many) place in Belgium that was cheaper
and also better quality. Do any of you guys from the low countries know
anything about this?

I have decided over the weekend that I'm not going to go to DEMF (there's
only that Trackmode thing I want to go to and Drexciya isn't even playing
now), me and some friends are going to get some music pressed up in the
summer (we had planned for the winter) instead. Problem is, I'm fairly
clueless about the manufacturing side and we don't have much money to waste
(all the money is coming from us selling our souls on e-bay). Any pointers,
especially about the pressing plants abroad and how we might keep the costs
down would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Alex.

[313] Mills question

2002-04-08 Thread alex.bond
Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

Can anyone remember that thing Jeff Mills did on 'Luxury Records'?
I believe that was his label and he sacked it off after one release.

Anyway, can anyone remember the title of it?
I think it was by 'Servo Unique'.
I could be very wrong though.

Thanks,
Alex.

Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

They got the floorplan and remade the whole thing exactly as it was in an
old warehouse. V.Weird!!
The Hac was sort of in two parts, there was a front bit which was quite an
old building (which had Robs Records offices + Factory + Pleasure upstairs)
and a big warehouse type bit on the back.(Which was where the majority of
the club was) all joined up.
The warehouse bit went ages ago, and they kept the front bit. Originally
everyone thought that the old bit was being kept as part of the new flats,
but even that was knocked down too. I posted up on here about it, as I pass
it on my walk to work every day, and one day I came past and the whole
thing had gone, it was v.sad, something Manchester will regret sooner
rather than later.

BTW, I saw ACR in Manchester last week, they were brilliant, I believe
they're doing London too with Weatherall DJ'ing, London 313 heads should
check 'em out.

My freind said after the film "I wonder if they used the real Hacienda" & I
thought they had coz it looked very realistic. Considering that it's not
there any more I guess that would be quite hard though wouldn't it !?! Is
it true that it got converted into offices? Damn shame if it is, I wish I'd
been there.
I came out of the cinema wanting to roll a fat one and listen to some more

Hey, I'll second that, It's pretty good. More of a comedy that anything
else.
The Hacienda scenes aren't actually the Hac, they built a set of it in an
old warehouse in Ancoats
and put on a massive party with free beer so they could get some 'club'
scenes.
In the bit where ACR and Joy Division are playing that gig, thats my old
club! (The Music Box) I painted those bloody walls and scrubbed the piss
stained bogs with an old toothbrush!! and the scenes of the 'Russell Club'
are in fact in Rockworld (the upstairs of The Music Box).

That's my point though, album or double pack, this cost the same to
produce.
If someone was trying to sell twelves at £11.50, you'd think it was cheeky.

If no one moans, then everyone will start charging £23 for their albums.

I just can't see a reason for it, can anyone else? (There's no picture
sleeve, no heavy weight vinyl etc)
Maybe the production side cost more, but, then, I can't see that either.
There's no session musicians to be paid or anything.

I just would like to know if it's just me that thinks the piss is being
taken.
And, if anyone knows of a good reason why this LP cost more, let us all
know and maybe we won't mind putting our hands in our pockets.

as far as i remember the other 2 were about 20 quid - i think they were
limited run and more albums than double packs hence the more expensive than
usual price tag. when you consider cds in chain stores are now above 15quid
and thats for a bloody CD which costs virtually nothing to manufacture i
think is not unreasonable.

if you think something is too expensive dont buy it then - if you do buy it
you obviously thought it was worth the price so quit bitching about it.

Neil Rushton used to be A+R? for Network records I think. Really don't know
if he's still around.
He was also responsible for the Retro Techno LP, and the two Biorhythms
compilations.
Him and John McCready were instrumental in bringing Detroit Music to these
shores (UK) in the first instance.
John McCready is still around, he's a freelance journalist, the last few
things I've seen by him were in the Face and the Guardian/Observer.
He still lives in Manchester, I see him in the second hand shops from time
to time.
He's an excellent journalist, I don't think I've ever read anything by him
that wasn't interesting.

btw. I got my copy of that Techno2 LP in Woolworths! for (I think) £2.99.
They had a big promo on it when it came out.
Seems weird that now!

who is based over there had a bag full of very rare Detroit records stolen.
Like I say, it happened a while ago, (3 months) it has only just occured to
me to post on here.

If anyone who works in a record shop, or anyone gets offered these records,
I would be grateful if you can contact me.
We can't remember exactly what was in the bag but some of the things are
listed below.
You'd know this bag, it was full, and I mean full of sought after stuff.
I know it's a long shot, but it's worth a try because the lad concerned
can't afford to replace them.

All the Buzz 12's in the silver sleeves,
Virtual Sex LP,
Telex - Sex LP,
33 1/3rd Queen - 'Searchin'
Shop double pack on Planet E.
Docile 12"

Can't remember any more, these are just from the top of my head, there was
50 - 70 records in there though, a large black sports type bag.

Thanks.

I think there was 3 Ismistik 12's on Djax, I've certainly got two and I
know of another.

At the time they came out, I thought they were killer, Techno from Europe
that had similarities to Detroit, there wasn't that much of it about at the
time. Was it '93?
Was glad to hear that the guy is still producing, a friend of mine picked
up that 10" + I thought it was pretty good too.

To be quite honest, I used to play them to death as a young lad. ah

"We Almost Lost Detroit" was ostensibly about the 1966 accident
at the Fermi experimental nuclear reactor in Monroe County.
Of course, you could also interpret it to mean something about
other events of the time.

Gil Scott-Heron's father, Giles, was from Jamaica originally and was
a renowed football (er, soccer) player in Canada, the US and the UK.
He played for the Detroit Corinthians in the early 1950s.

Sadly, Gil himself was sentenced to a serious jail term after not
sticking with a rehab agreement last November. Not surprisingly, this
all started with a bust "on sus" as they say in the UK. Whatever
else you can say about jail, it's not a place to get well, but that
is where the judge felt he had to go, and maybe that was the least bad
of several very serious alternatives.

All I can say is it's a blessing to this tired old world to have someone
of his talent still going, and let's hope we see him soon, better and
happier and more ready to raise his voice again. You can tell from
his interviews that he's still alert and as free a thinker as ever.

That committee mentioned earlier looked OK to me.

I must admit that when I saw the festival advertised last year and saw some
of the names involved (Carl Cox) I did wonder what that had to do with
detroit music.

O.K.
Question - If this festival could only go ahead because it had a large
corporate sponsor and had to include a stage of the Tong/Oakenfold variety,
but still was representing Detroit with several smaller stages would you
rather that than no festival at all?

Oh, happy days, I remember him dropping UR no.1 and mashing the 'Beginning'

At that time it still sounded like a pirate show, he'd do shouts over all

Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

Right, I sort of held back from doing this, but I'm going to jump on the
bandwagon.

Alex Bond

Age - 27

Live - in Manchester

Work - Shit office job (pay those bills)

Music - Soul, Jazz, Funk, Disco, House, Techno, Leftfield tackle, early
electronica. Black dancefloor music (Cringe)

313 list - 3 weeks!!

Got into Techno - Heard a compilation on Network - 'Biorhythms' inc.
Model500 'Infoworld', RhythimisRhythim 'Emanon' in '91/92, nearly fell on
my arse as a young lad I could not quite believe that shit.

Music related stuff - 1995-1999, Ran a night and a club in Manchester.
Founded the Music Box. Did a night called 'The Womb', 1st party Juan Atkins
spun, last night Robert Hood. 'The Womb' had to stop due to the IRA blowing
up our premises. Moved into the basement of a club called 'Rockworld'.
Painted the club, scrubbed it, got a soundsystem in it, called it ' The
Music Box'. Started a night called 'Drama'. Darryl Wynn spun on the first
night due to Ron Trent cancelling, many more played. Stopped night due to
lack of interest and our lack of funds (my rent, bills weren't getting paid
+ I lost my marbles!). Last big party I did was with Frankie Valentine, DIY
and the boys from Rainy City Music in '99.

Lost interest in Music (not completely) but I had to sell ALL my records to
pay the rent, all the classics, Boy did Vinyl Exchange do well out of me.
That fucked my head up a bit, and I had to leave it for a while. Been
buying records again since start of 2001, obsessively. Got my passion back
for Music completely now, looking after a producer in Manchester, getting a
record pressed up soon, before Summer, playing some records at a party on
Saturday night. We have a good crew here, 30 strong, all Detroit heads - we
throw little parties in Mad Northern working mens clubs. Happy again!!

Never been to Detroit, me and a friend were thinking of going to this years
DEMF. Lived in LA for 5 months when I was about 18 though - Wild times!!

Rant/Essay over - sorry if I bored anybody.

Point taken Ken,

Sorry, just was on a bit of a rant. Of course people should come here
ignorant, it's a good resource for people.

I just can't stand a lot of that sort of music - the boundaries between
that and techno, I admit ,are blurred.
It's a lot of the jokers associated with that sort of music that I have a
pet hate for as well (of course, NOT ALL of them).

For the record I hate Student, Puffa-Jacket wearing wanna-be bad boys as
well (You know the sort, were dead into rave/happy hardcore, then found
some 'credibility' with 'Jungle' and now are speed garage
producers/know-it-alls)

Speed bloody Garage, 2-Step, what ever you want to call it.

Alright, there's a few D+B producers who can cut it (Photek/Dillinja?) but
overall, I have to say it's bobbins, and barely worth a discussion, that

I don´t know why they did it, but one thing is sure: TMT-01, TMT-02 and

You can get any transmat record nowadays, except for those four released

I've not heard anything and haven't been keeping my eyes open. Hopefully
I'll be getting over there if there is one going on, there's a cheap flight
offer on at the moment, so I could do with finding out.

Thanks.
Alex.
