Re: (313) Re: [ok] RE: (313) Saunderson not doing Fuse-In.
JT hit on the crux right here: well it was at the time, to him, it used to be to me, sometimes it still is, maybe not to others, etc -- my point is that it has a lot more to do with where your head is at than with the music itself. My two cents, before I pass out: Techno isn't about pushing into new production techniques and textural styles for the sake of staying on some fleeting compositional cutting edge. It's about humans and technology and the imagined future. It's the musical equivalent of science fiction and space opera. Techno is Syd Mead and Frank Frazetta and Joe Kubert and Katsuhiro Otomo. It's the smell of sweat in your spacesuit, the green whores of venus, and sex in zero-G. It's about wanting to get the hell out of wherever you're stuck here on Earth. As retro as techno from '85 sounds, it's still futuristic, the same way Metropolis is texturally old, but remains thematically relevant. Good science fiction doesn't have an expiration date. The only kind of techno that dies is the kind that didn't have a soul to begin with. Maybe all that sounds presumptious coming from a young white guy born in the desert, but that's the chord techno stuck with me, and it's why I've spent the last decade in love with it. It didn't matter that Cosmic Raindance came out while I was in diapers . . . the first time I heard it when I was a teenager, it did what it was supposed to do. -bp

(313) Genre stasis (was RE: techno)
Quoting robin [EMAIL PROTECTED]: interesting questions: does techno have to move forward to still be techno? imo once a genre of music is established then it just goes through phases of recycling and incrementally improving/evolving. look at rock for example, a lot of the new bands now (say white stripes etc) are just tweaking stuff like the stooges. is that bad tho? and experimental for experimental's sake just missed the point of _dance_ music to me. it still has to have a groove or funk to it. I'm very much with you here. I remember when the Model 600 record came out, there were people who faulted Juan for returning to a mid-eighties aesthetic, saying it didn't do anything to advance the genre. So what? It was a damned good electro record. It's probably logged more cruise hours in my car than any other piece of music. Moving forward strictly for the sake of moving forward often results in the neglect of ideas that still have room for exploration. (313) Online record shopping
BK I would be happy to hear any recommendations from others on the list of BK online record stores that have an accurate stock list! A good BK selection is a nice bonus, but I value an up-to-date stock list most. http://www.planetxusa.com is decent. There's an indicator next to each record showing how likely it is to be in stock, and Real Audio samples of just about everything. The site works best in IE (certain things go flaky in Phoenix/Mozilla). My only complaint about them is that they don't seem as personalized as they were a couple years ago. They used to surprise me with random promo records, posters, t-shirts and the like (much as Submerge is known to do), but ever since they went Internet-only there's been less and less of that. I mean, yeah, it's not like I can complain about not getting free swag, but it's definitely one of the things that will keep me going back for more. - Brian balistic Prince http://www.bprince.com - art and techno Strokes of Defiance EP . . . soon.

Re[2]: (313) techno tunes that do it (make your hair stand on end)
It's great to see everyone's picks . . . reminds me of how many holes I've still got in my collection. Here are my spine tinglers: Stacey Pullen Vertigo (what's he been up to lately?) Drexciya Aquaticism (that vocal . . . spooky) Manuel Gottsching e2-e4 (when the guitar finally comes in after 35 minutes) Laurent Garnier Greed (Fabrice Lig remix) Savvas Ysatis Highrise (it's so crisp, and doesn't suffer from the sterility present in much of what gets called deep tech-house) Basic Channel Radiance III (edit) (spending a lot of time in the barren expanses of the American West, one acquires an appreciable awareness of their position on a planetary scale. For me, Basic Channel was always the perfect musical accompaniment for that feeling of isolation and and distant grandeur) And it's not really techno, but there's an old track (mid-70s) done by an academic electronic musican named Laurie Spiegel . . . Appalachian Grove I think it's called . . . it's really gorgeous. Definitely the inspiration for the layered sine wave melody I wrote for hold: http://www.bprince.com/BrianPrinceHoldPreview.mp3 Here's her web page: http://retiary.org/ls/index.html - Brian balistic Prince http://www.bprince.com - art and techno Strokes of Defiance EP . . . soon.
Re[2]: (313) t-1000 interview (techno rant)
DS How about the Emoticon folks, Delsin, Digital Soul? (to name but a few) DS There are lots of artists and labels that are creating wonderful DS evolutions of Detroit techno. When I first joined 313 a couple years ago, most of the techno I'd heard and collected was on the well-established, well-known (in techno circles at least) labels like Tresor, Transmat, Planet E, UR, et cetera. I'd never heard of Fabrice Lig, or $tinkworx, or Arne Weinberg, or Splinterfaction. I hadn't heard anything like the shades of music those cats were making. It's like you're eating through a bag of MMs and suddenly you see a color you've never tasted before. I thought I had techno pegged, and it managed to surprise me. It may not always be Detroit-centric . . . hell, hopefully one day it won't even be Earth-centric . . . but I think that it will continue to exist as long as musicians continue to be influenced by developments in technology. - Brian balistic Prince http://www.bprince.com - art and techno Strokes of Defiance EP . . . soon.
Re[2]: (313) production and mastering
The only production technique that consistently annoys me is the over-use of compression. Many producers will say they do it to get their tracks noticed, or to give them presence . . . I would suggest, if you find that people only notice your tracks when you eliminate your dynamic range and make everything blaringly-loud, you've probably got bigger worries than poor production. An over-compressed track is like a black and white photograph that's 90% flat white and 10% flat black black, with no grey in between. Last week on Invisible Cracker Mom: KJJ I never played on stage with a guitar but i always wondered why KJJ people say that as soon as a band uses guitars, drums, sax etc. it is KJJ considered more live then some guy who is working the hell out of a KJJ bunch of electronic equipment? I never understood why repeating a KJJ guitar riff for 4 minutes is considered more live then arranging KJJ electronic equipment for 4 minutes? Ignorant people assume the gear does all the work, and that the person calling himself an artist is really just a technician. I deal with this in my day job (visual artist) constantly. Clients think that all I'm doing is telling the computer what to draw. Generally speaking, nobody knows how a sampler works, but everybody knows how to air guitar. Because techno music is tightly bound to science and futurism, the techniques for performing it are always going to seem alien to the vast majority of people . . . and if they can't understand how you're doing it, they're less apt to give you any kind of credit for your efforts. Re: [313] Religious producers/DJ's (was: TERRENCE PARKER)
Friday, September 13, 2002, 8:21:27 AM, a knob was tweaked and out came: CB Hmm... this begs a question that i've been pondering for a while... How many CB (not to forget who) producers/DJ's are religious? I heard the Burden family CB is Jehova's Witnesses, but who else... And who are the atheists in our CB midst? And I guess since I'm posing the question, I should answer it CB too... I'm an atheist, but respecting and being interested in religion. I suppose its ironic for an atheist to have a record coming out on Digital Soul :) To me, soul means basic human emotion . . . its that deep-running current of sadness and mortality that makes Detroit techno so sweet, at least to my ear. Anybody can have that kind of soul . . . you've just got filter out the social bullshit around you and find it on your own terms. When emotion is forced into the music, then it ain't soul. Whether you marvel at god's creation or at the sheer scope and chaos of the universe, its still the same emotion you're feeling. The basic feelings expressed by techno music are common to everyone, regardless of worldview. I think its possible to genuinely appreciate Claude Young's Gates of the Afterlife even if you don't believe in one. Being atheist isn't something I'd ever stamp on my work . . . that would make about as much sense as randomly listing other things I don't believe in in my liner notes . . . Friday, September 13, 2002, 11:41:05 AM, a knob was tweaked and out came: RT Is is true that in some US high schools you're not allowed to teach the RT widely-accepted scientific fact of evolution 'cos it might upset the bible RT bashers, who have no objection to having their kids taught to hate and RT discriminate? Evolution is taught almost uniformly in all public schools. The few exceptions are in the southern bible belt of America. Unfortunately, creation science /is/ pretty much uniquely American, and its perpetrators quite vocal. That said, I live in a very religious state (Utah), and the kids here are definitely not taught creationism in public schools. Even Brigham Young University, a major religious academy, offers majors in microbiology and the like. You need to realize that the US is not morally congruous. Each state has its own character. I'm presently in a region where pornography is illegal, and you're not allowed to purchase alcahol or dance in public on a sunday, but I can hop on a plane to Reno, Nevada and in an hour have access to legalized gambling and prostitution, and if the November elections go the way I'm thinking they will, it will be legal to posses small amounts of recreational marijuana there within a year.
