Re: [313] speaking of hawtin... (was Re: [313] Hawtin + Aphex Twin - NY Times)
he said that was probably the best time he's ever had playing in SF. his set the following night in LA was quite similar.. came on, floored it for a while, backed off and played some de9:ce tracks, and then wound up banging it out again - but more funky, like you said. he snuck in that You Spin Me Round remix, as well as a rework of Coffee Pot, which kept a little humor and a lot of screaming fans going for it from beginning to end. they gave him an encore and damn i wish i knew what that track was! One of the most emotional sets I've seen him play...There was actual melody! And no 909 stupidity. I really felt like he's started trying to take people on a journey again. I thanked him for it afterwards and he said that he was really into it that night as well. Kevin Saunderson is doing it with the new KMS studios (with Heath Brunner-sp-and some other experienced locals) and I think it's something that older Detroit players should use as an example. There is so much younger talent in Detroit that doesn't get the recognition they deserve, such as derek and many, many others. I find it interesting that some people forget that not everyone on this lists posts or speaks. If it's one thing the information age is infamous for, is creating a lack of manners and respect for others. Let's try and remember that what you post about someone, you should just as well be able to say it to their face. And even if they aren't on the list...it's pretty guarenteed it will get back to them (-especially- in Detroit).I don't care if anyone care's or not, just take into consideration. Re: [313] ANyone know about Finalscratch (maybe OT)
it's not ready for purchase yet; should be 'soon'. supposedly will be around $500. no special hardware is needed, other than the breakout box and the two pieces of special vinyl that will come with the system... and a pc running at least 500mhz P3 with a USB connection. the breakout connects to the pc via USB and to the mixer via the Line inputs - so you have to have a mixer with Line ins on most of the ins, which most mixers do. beyond that it's all the same stuff - two turntables, carts/needles, mixer, etc. you can see all the details, watch some QT movies of john explaining the system, and request to be notified when the system is ready at www.finalscratch.com At 7:32 AM -0400 8/15/01, PJ wrote: Hey, all... exactly.. you can record to a pristine digital 24/96 environment if you like, and then play that digital recording out. only consideration is file size. so technically finalscratch could sound better than records ever did. as for independent labels and distribution, a) this won't happen over night - vinyl production isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and b) sooner or later digital music distribution will finally dump its two left feet and figure out a way a safe and efficient way to work. seems so ironic that all the hard to find music we buy is almost exclusively on vinyl, when it started out as a digital master. artists need to be paid for their work, but in what format we receive it shouldn't matter. people seem to have gotten used to CDs just fine... plus, if music got cheaper due to the reduced distribution costs, there's a very good chance people would buy a lot more of it. i know personally there's tons of housier records that i ignore every month because it's just not in the budget. this also has huge implications for all the tiny, regional labels out there around the world that very few people get exposed to. Re: [313] Quick question...
even if you don't 'dj' in the go out and do it places sense, there's every reason to not only have a tuntable at home, but to have 2 (or 3) tables, a mixer, etc at home. first of all, all the good techno is only on vinyl and that's just the way it is right now, plus learning to mix (even a little) gives the whole thing a different perspective. lots of tracks sound better when they are played with other tracks, and getting familiar with the music happens a lot more quickly when you are actually engaged in 'doing' something with it. ok, yes, listening to it is doing something with it.. let's avoid that thread. there's a lot of damn fun to be had by djing at home, for yourself, is my point. Re: [313] plus8 in sf
In general talking about Rich is a dead end, or at least I try not to do it on this list - but since HP asked. ;) Likewise, Rich is still very much an inspiration. It's funny to me how popular it has become to slag him for media sensation this and that... he has always cared deeply for presentation, for putting his own stamp on the things he does. This is not news; that he has accumulated the success that affords him the ability to do bigger productions, make a bigger name for himself has absolutely nothing to do with anything other than that success. He earned it. Behind the decks or in the studio, he is a master. You can't buy that, nor can you promote it into existence. The old days... ahh. Too much like the whole dancing about architecture cliche... Spastik, the Toronto live show.. just about religious experiences - euphoric. Toe-head Richie Rich in The Shelter. The Hard parties, the Jak parties, the free barn party, his little black hole of a room at the back of the warehouse in Toronto during the Autechre party, Jak 6 and the tribal speaker destruction, the amazing Jak o'lantern (I got there early and was in the main room when it was empty - The System was scary that night!) (he also had some rack-mounted stuff back in these days, to concur with Steve's observation.) Several events in SF, LA, Iowa, Pittsburgh, M1, others. All permanently stamped in my brain, part of who I am today. Earlier this month I spent a bunch of money so I could be back in Detroit for about 12 hours at the u1 party. Felt like a small homecoming and Rich laid down the law that night; no question whatsoever that he has become one of the world's best DJs. Worth every penny and every uncomfortable moment on the airplane. How glad I am that I got old(er) doing this and that spontaneous cross-country trips have become possible. Some people go fishing...

Re: [313] DEMF 'Hurt Feelings'
There's about 100 arguable, semi-ridiculous points in that original posting. The loudest one seems to be: if you've never heard Alan you really can't make all these subjective assumptions about what he does and doesn't play - even if you have snippets of quotes from Alan himself and the sounds of his production to go by. Never mind the fact that there are people (at least one person..) on the bill who *do* usually play proto-european mega banging techno. In fact, I think he's closing out the festival. However, like Alan, this person can play everythying and does play everything - extremely well. And they are both Detroit icons. The fact of the matter is that Alan has been around for a long time, and has been a positive contributor to Techno (let's leave out the geography for a moment) for an equally long time. We'll never know why he wasn't included in this particular DEMF unless Carl (or whomever) decides to come out and actually tell us. Good or bad, there could be dozens of reasons. Separately, be glad there is a DEMF at all. I realize many people around the world do have an idea of what it's been like there for the last 15 years, but unless you lived there, you'll never fully understand: this is virtually a miracle. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org 313@hyperreal.org Date: Saturday, May 27, 2000 1:28 PM Subject: RE: [313] DEMF 'Hurt Feelings' if they were booking dj's that move stuff forward. then, explain to me why gary chandler has two sets. i'm not dissing the mans skills, but tell me how booty music moves anything forward. Though I've never heard a set I own a few of your records, which are solid, and have an indication of what you play from the comments you've made on this list. Hard and minimal is my guess, the way Detroit used to do it, and from all reports mixed up in inspirational style. But with the exception of Hawtin, Mills and yourself (and maybe Rolando), it doesn't seem to me that that's what Detoit musicians are into anymore. I think Detroit and I think Carl Craig, Moodyman and Theo Parrish. I think Moods and Grooves and Theorem. They're the ones getting attention for moving stuff forward. I like the Detroit sound you helped to pioneer. But I think somewhere it got stuck in a groove. And the rest of Detroit kept moving on. I still like what you're doing, and I think lots of Europe like it too. I just don't think that your lack of invitation is a personal thing: it's more that your sound no longer represents present day Detroit. I'm keen to hear how you (very very lucky) people at DEMF sum up the Detroit sound circa 2000. Cheers Rol
Re: [313] industrial vs. hip hop and Astrelwerks
I don't see how anybody, fan or producer, can come into techno via hip-hop. Speedy J? Ben Sims? (not sure about Ben...)
