Yeah, true...finally some parties are setted up in Paris... - Play from Calme records - F.U.! F-Com parties (sometimes related to 313 sound). - Technorama - Btrax - Some parties at Rex...(Automatik, Garnier's residency, Gravity...) - And these people who setted up R.U Detroit Not so bad... Ok, it will be my final words... I agree with the ones who whant to hear some other things than Detroit music at Detroit festival...I think, have good music is the most important...in all the ways... But I seems to be logic, than a festival in Detroit brings mainly the Detroit related musics...and then some good music around...I fee its a bit strange than finaly, most of the Detroit artist will play in afterparty...in the Dark again...even for the celebration of their music...So it promises to have good after-parties ;-). And finaly...I think the the wise decision this year...was to cancel the festival and have more than a year to prepare THE next Detroit festival (2007)...quietly, correctly ...Paxahau, Kevin Saunderson and others had/have 2 months to prepare the previous festivals and this year too...so regarding that parameters they did a good job...but Can we imagine a festival prepared during a year...I hope to see that one day...in DETROIT... 6 months of promotions without any doubt on the fact than it will happen or not...One year to book the hotel rooms, to prepare the after-parties...organize travels with friends...A dream... Re: (313) it's a rave in hart plaza
I think its a good thing to follow the new trends for a festival, but last year was perfect...Paxahau's job in their room was great, different than the main stage, more clubby atmosphere. But for me a Detroit festival is the chance to let all the Detroit legend and new artists from Detroit to express themselves in front of the people they deserve...So I mean, all the U.R, Transmat, Puzzlebox, Metroplex, KMS, etc people...Some special things...why not a J.Mills Wizard mix...Or philarmonic orchestra with U.R/Jeff Mills like in France. Some Hip-Hop artists from Detroit was a good idea...some Jazz stuff too... I remember last year, U.R camp' stress before their Live act...It was the first time they played live in fromt onf their families...Thats, what we expect as Detroit fans...See some Detroit artist playing in their real environment, I think its something special. At first a DETROIT tribute and then, some support artists like the European new artists or confirmed...But as I've seen in a previous message..., why to do a kind of Sonar or other European festival in US, when you are in the city where everything started...something than no other cities in the world can do ? Also, I'm afraid then the Mutek line up will be a bit similar than Detroit festival as they have lot of minimal acts...so even commercialy, I think its maybe not so good for the festival. So, finaly..Its a bit like doing a sweets festival in switzerland without chocolate as the star of the show ... ;-)...sorry for the comparison, ah ! ah ! Possible, in this case, I can't tell u what I think as I didn't see the movie...Of course thats an important element, if a movie is done about Detroit music , it has to be good and closest as possible as the reality...I agree. I just think than Detroit Music is too much assimilated to Nostalgia...More than Roots, or Beginning of something...more positive idea than nostalgia. This year, in Europe, we celebrated Mozart, and I can tell you, even if I'm not a big fan of Classic Music, I never felt than there was a taste of Nostalgia, was more like an happy celebration...Why can't the people always talk about electronic music begining with Nostalgia...We have to see that as a chance, and a gift to develop for the future, but also to appreciate in the present time. Re: (313) Juan Atkins Up For A Grammy
totaly agree Emiliano, you are an example of hows music is sometimes working... fabrice The uneducated masses don't know electro from hip-hop from Jazz and probably never will. What would be great is if he wins he could go up and blast the audience with a quick dose of knowledge like The music Industry sucks and you are all sheep!!!. The uneducated masses, definitly no... But I started with Public Enemy, then go back to Afrika Bambaataa, and to electro, and I started to understand more about Kraftwerk. Then I began to love hip-hop, that became hip-house for a (fortunatly) short time, and (guess what) this songs boosted my interest for house and Chicago... 300 miles away from Chicago was Detroit and so I started to listen to some techno... And now, 18 years later (rgh), I'm signed to a 313 mailing list, tryin' to learn more. So, probably Juan Atkin will never be recognized by the masses, but maybe an award would give him some more fame, more bucks and (maybe) 200 more kids will begin to be more interested in techno... ...And we'll have 200 more people who can listen to us when we talk about how music industry's s fake ;) Japo
Re: (313) Juan Atkins Up For A Grammy
Hi Guys, I think its time to see reality... Of course I would prefer to vote directly for Juan for an electro track he did...But when u vote for Missy, it means you vote for Juan producer qualities, specially for an old track, it means, he still timeless producer. After that I don't understand why we can't vote for Juan thru Missy Elliot track...Why she doesn't sample him...its the best way to say, that guy rocks ! His music Rocks...If they can do a popular hip hop track with an electro sample, it shows the power of our music... I'm not a sampling guy, don't really like that, but, the ones who are saying its a shame to sample techno to do some kind of other music, are in extasy for Moodyman music, or the same they have Fix from Orlando Voorn in their all time favourite ( I'm one of these ones ;-)... Music is Music, always recycled, transformed, re-born...sometimes in a good, sometimes in a bad way...we have to admit this fact... So when Mad Mike is showing up to help friend to get what he deserve...from Hip-hop or techno, or electro scene...I think its a good thing... Its maybe better if Juan is coming to get his award than ABBA to get an award for madona's sampling ;-). So guys, music is more complicated than just Yes or not, Black or white, nothing or everything...I think than its not a shame (and finally very funny) to be the best hip-hop producer when you're doing electro...Maybe next year it should be Grand Master Flash or...some of you ??? Thats power of good music. ...just to remind you...Mister Lill Louis did an hip hop oriented album, and, finally was not a bad one... ...all these words to say, I'll vote, and will be proud for him if Juan is winning... Funny to see that as the last time I've seen Kenny in Detroit he told me he wasn't really into re-release projects, thats why he never re-released Art of Dance stuff...so its great to know he changed his mind...Hope the best (and rare) of Art of Dance will come on this project.Cool. Re: (313) Interstellar Fugitives - Far East first
I have to say than I have this point of view regarding japan and U.R : Should be a lie to say than money is not a reason, of course, Japan will probably order and pay more for U.R music than all other countries in the world but one of the first reason is respect and support ; Here, I'll talk for me, but I know than UR has a feeling really close to that. Nowadays, Japan is the country where the Detroit techno and affiliated music is the most respected, supported. So it appears logical to want to thanx them for their support, their fidelity and respect for the music. And release a CD or album a bit before some other countries is just something to express our respect to japanese music lovers. Of course, I think there is many other place where people are true music lovers...I think about Scotland mainly after that its everywhere of course. But for the artists (of the Detroit techno scene or others) who experienced Japan, they'll understand what I say. I won't give you more information here as I don't want to do boring promotion, but I'll start my own label in september, and the releases will come earlier to 3 places ; Submerge, Rub-a-dub (glasgow), underground Gallery (Japan-Osaka)...exactly for the reasons I explain before... Fabrice Lig *** for the little story...you'll find more back catalog stuff of Detroit music in Tokyo than in Detroit ;-), so you can understand than support deserve some little gifts like a previous output date... And finaly...if you want it...you can order stuff on japanese websites ;-). Since you're posting from Brazil, I don't think you ment any harm, but maybe file that word along with other 'English words that could get my ass kicked.' Nothing against our jap friends. Deep respect for their support and enthusiasm. Ooops! Sorry... It is evident from my comment that never meant to be racist of disrespectful with japaneses. In portuguese, `japa` would be an OK, short nick for a japanese, as `brazuca' would be for a brazilian... Thanks for letting me know, G --- http://www.dinamicas.art.br

RE: (313)Kenny Larkin was: radio playlist - 25/4/04
Yes, I understand your point of view too...Long repetitive structures are generaly more into an atmospheric track, and fast changes structures into some tracks with hights moments...true...the best way is to find both of these sides in one tracks...probably the most difficult thing to do... I think that a guy like Kenny larkin is able to do that. cheers Fabrice Lig http://www.fabricelig.com From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: fabrice Lig [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: (313)Kenny Larkin was: radio playlist - 25/4/04 Date: Mon, 26 Apr 2004 22:20:53 +0100 Hi Fabrice I think my subsequent emails to the list may have clarified matters, but just in case, what I meant by pop was nothing to do with popularity and not really much to do with innovation. Fundamentally I used it as a word to contrast the way in which people write songs, i.e. some songs have rapid changes that give you a real sudden high moments, others change extremely slowly and build an atmosphere. Obviously this isn't the only set of poles between which music can be aligned, but I happened to be thinking this way about it this morning in my perpetual quest to understand music.:) Best Dan. Totally agree with you Arne !!! And anyway...what is Pop music, what is underground music...? No answer...I think pop means popular...so a track become popular after lots of people appreciate or buy it... After that, if each track which is melodic and no repetitive is a pop track...ok we are all doing pop tracks... I completely understand these words about Kenny's album...Its the same for me, on the new one there is a vocal track...like the last 12'' on Raygun...some people already called that techno pop ;-) ?...so Big fun from Innercity was one of the first techno pop song...the same for Strings of life...Black Water last year... and these tracks are amazing ! RE: Fw: Re: (313) movement 04
Just wanted to agree too... I think that by ourdays, festivals are more Cultural events, than some private companies sources of profit... I can tell you that 80% of the live acts I've made in last 3 years in festivals (even if its 90% in Europe, where its the same situation anyway) were possible because of some sponsors or Governement cultural budgets... Specially for free festivals... Even if I think that lots of governement budgets are too low...or (its the case in Belgium) just dedicated to Classical music, nothing for electronic, rock music etc... So, its also the moment to talk about sponsoring for underground music...(because I know that if we are talking about Movement, we will have to talk about sponsorship..) If we need to wear a Ford t-shirt (ok its maybe too much ;-)..., to have a chance to make the people ear/discover our music ...why not... Sponsoring exist for many centuries...it made possible some of the nicest italian sculptures and peinting during renaissance hey !...of course Ford didn't exist by these days, but was the same kind of business...;-) Fabrice Lig From: Fred Heutte [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Fw: Re: (313) movement 04 Date: Sat, 14 Feb 2004 13:58:40 -0800 I couldn't disagree more. Many businesses aren't profitable in their first year or two. Even moreso for turnarounds, which Movement is. DEMF had the advantage of launching during a huge economic upswing, which ended shortly thereafter. Movement is operating in a context of a bad economy (Michigan is second only to my own Oregon in unemployment) and contracting ad budgets. The music industry itself, as we know, is an utter shambles. Those who think they know how to run Movement better might want to call up and volunteer. Maybe if your ideas are that good they'll bring you on as staff. Better yet, invest a few hundred thousand dollars and have a deciding voice in how the show runs. Interesting, The problem is that I can't understand how the big companies didn't take care about that Internet crisis before...Its something who started more than 5 years ago. And the result is due to a passive behaviour from the big companies in front of the birth of that crisis !?! I almost think that, it's a really good opportunity for them to cut thousands of jobs, to increase the profit. And after they'll have cut all this job...they'll find a solution to stop the crisis, increase their profit again, and finaly never recover all the jobs they cutted ...??? I can believe they need 6 years or more to find a solution to this kind of problem...and their kind of cd copy protections were each time good (belgian) jokes !!! Its just what I think... and wonder... Date: Sat, 11 Jan 2003 14:50:26 -0800 it's coming very soon, but the likelihood is that what francois was doing was using decks and traktor concurrently. correct, traktor does not incorporate turntables but you can control it with a regular hardware dj mixer. according to hawtin it's impossible that francois was using an osx version of FS just yet. another quasi-possibility is that he was actually using FS but under a full linux distribution on mac hardware. this is at least possible at this point, albeit a pain in the ass. if you were geeky enough to really know your way around linux it could happen -- people have been able to get it to run on linux-only PCs, rather than using the embedded linux install solution that currently comes with FS. it involves plenty of configuration and kernel weirdness however, and i've never heard of anyone trying it on any of the mac-friendly linux distros. Re: (313) list members music and trance...
Completely agree with you Aril...Q1.01, Hood tracks,Vapour space (I like to finish a set with that or Innercity goodlife/Big fun...), Red Planet stuff, its really close to trance border, or completely trance, finaly whats the difference, its good tracks and thats the most important...finaly there is only tracks we like and other we dislike, depend of our sensibility, our taste. If a cheesy trancy tracks or Pure hard Rock track can give some good emotions to someone, its good too...I spoke to an Hard Rock fan this year and before he told me that I've never imagine we could have emotions on this kind of music, of course its different that what we feel on techno music but it gives some pleasure to some other people and finaly its the magic of music, everyone has a different taste but everyone can find is way...Just look how big is the country music in U.S ;-) Also, I noticed in another message that we said that 313 is the only place where we can find good producers...oh fortunately not...there is lots of other place to find some, there is sooo much And finaly... Date: 11 Dec 2002 12:12:16 +0100 i love your music to fabrice :) regarding that whole trance thing...i´d choose a proper trance/trancey track any day infront of a progressive track...which in my own (mark my own) opinion is way much cheesier than trance. maybe it´s because of my background of synth-music but i love when a track flirts with trance but never goes over the line to being trance-music. i love that track hawtin started his first demf set, i think it´s juno reactor...oh man i was going nuts when he played that track with the looong intro :) i´ve been listening to several mixes of it´s more fun to compute with kraftwerk all day (i really should get something to eat) and it´s 13 minutes of good trance which for me is something repetitive but not monoton in a boring way. i love plus and rek with hood on internal empire, i love Q 1.01 (i think the name is) with basic channel...what it all comes down to in any case of labeling music is your own taste and that´s my or your problem, not for anybody else to judge. peace, aril Date: Wed, 11 Dec 2002 10:56:05 +0100 To: 313@hyperreal.org From: fabrice Lig [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: list members music ;-) Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Guys, Who is not agree to say that if we are on this list its because we love electronic music, Detroit techno or every kind of nice music. Re: [313] Sensual
Hi Todd John, Thanx for your support. At first, about Deeper shade of techno, I have the vinyls in my collection, I know its hard to find but it exists. About the release date of the 7th city release, I think its for very soon, I hope this month or early november. I think its approximatively in the same time that my F-Com release will be out, under a new project called Soul Designer. About the list of my records ; usually I don't like self promotion but in the other way, I'm usually in this situation for other artists releases ; to give an example, I have to contact John Tejada or Titonton or other guys I like, to know their new releases to come. Its unfortunately the usual way for melodic techno scene, there is not a big support from distribution companies or Records shops. (we are not big salers or popular heads...). They only get 2 or 3 copies and never do new orders, so if you missed it. Thats why, of course, I think that this list could be a good platform to take the other aware about new melodic or Detroit music records. Of course, not in a money purpose (if producers really want to win money, its better to do crap dance stuff !), but more an information purpose. I'm too often in a bad mood because I missed a records because I didn't hear something of a records before I heard it in a dj set ?!? So, I can write a little list of the 12'' that I really would like the other 313 'ers ' take an ear on ;) In an other way, I'm building a new website and I'll probably put a kind of mailing list for people who wants to still update about my releases. [313] save the good vinyl...
Thats true that if there is more and more vinyl, lots of them are really bad, so, we loose lot of time to hear that because as dj, I'm sure we are all too much afraid to miss a good one into this hard jungle of crap records ;) Also, for my onw, distribution companies distribute lots of bad things and sometimes forget or don't pay any attention on nice stuff !!! I think sometimes they only sell tons of vinyl (I mean plastic) and don't mind what is cutted on, just make lots of money... O.k, I stop here , 313'ers will think that I like to say some bad words...;) I think that each label did or will do some mistakes and I understand that, its different when you make mistakes for each releases... [313] Save the vinyl info
Hey guys, I just though about it because someone in this list signed by 'Save the vinyl I talked several times to some people from Vinyl pressing factories and eachone told me that they are really really busy and always too much records to press. Some of them are trying to buy old machines in Africa, East Europe... to be able to press more and more vinyls. In the same time, they need a serious maintenance and its not easy to find some guys who are really into this kind of machines. They are thinking to build new machines when everyone will be broken. (they stopped to produce pressing machines several years ago) So I think that vinyl is not ready to die ! Thats true that for each labels the number of copies is going down but there is more and more labels so more and more vinyls. so... After getting a bit enlighted by the responses to my Red Planet question, I'm going to try and resolve some more naivete... Here's the situation: I'm a bit confused. It seems that there are two different versions of Axis 009. The songs are untitled and the record itself doesn't even identify itself except for the etching on the label. This seems really illogical to me and a bit confusing. Is there some story behind this record, or is it just one of those unexplained strange occurances? Sorry Ryan, I don't know all the senses of different english expressions, I usually speak french and try to do my best in english. So, you like it, good. i ignored that was out yet, I received it as a promo 3 weeks ago. You're right, I just left a record on Raygun records, for me the style is something like melodic deep techno, but each time I put a more clubby track for dancefloor. I invite you to take a look on my website : http://www.multimania.com/fabricelig Sorry again !
