Re: (313) recent 3 chairs record

2003-07-05 Thread James Bucknell
i'm about as nostalgic as they come--i think it all went downhill after nu
groove folded and i don't think dance music sounds right if it it wasn't
recorded onto a four track.
the problem with the recent three chairs is that it's not nostalgic enough.
it sounds too modern for me--it sounds like tech-house.
but, i've not had a proper listen, because i literally can't play the
record. when i couldn't play the first record, i bought another one hoping
for a better pressing. neither is playable and they cost me $21 each.

Re: (313) police arresting dj's

2003-06-26 Thread James Bucknell
no surprise to me--australia has little in law to protect the rights, civil
and otherwise, of it's citizens (we lack what to americans seem like the
most basic of rights--speech, free assembly etc.) in the past, this hasn't
been a significant problem because governments have acted in relatively good
faith (unless you were aboriginal).

however, the australian government is no longer acting in good faith. we now
have a particularly mean-spirited reactionary government that is more than
willing to toady to foreign governments or international corporations at the
expense of our national interests and personal rights.

added to that is a police force whose level of corruption and abuse makes it
more third world than first world.

ordering (not as good as some european sites) but postage from the states
always seems more expensive.
if you want to buy vinyl there really isn't any cheaper alternative than
ordering from europe.
but at $20 a record, it has to be something really really special.
unfortunaltey, as a dj you can't just buy sure fire classics, you have too
take chances etc.

vinyl has pretty much priced itself out of the market for me i australia.
final scratch and broadband seem the only way to go here. or cd djing.

early (first 15 or so) svek releases might interest you. minimal, dubby,
snythetic. the first brommage dub release (sK013) is really good and has
been re-released very recently. impossible to find the early stuff on vinly.
the first 'lords of svek' cd is agood comp of the early sound, very
different to their later releases.

Re: (313) DJ BOX Warning

2003-05-14 Thread James Bucknell
i've got a trick as well,
on a trip from new york to australia i was assured by the airline that i
could insure my record box at the check-in desk. they were wrong, couldn't
be done. i said, without insurance they don't leave my arms. of course the
records were way overweight for hand luggage. so my girlfriend and i were
bumped to business for a 24 hour flight, because business had more generous
hand luggage allowance.

use methylated spirits or rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) mixed with distilled
water 1 part to 5. doesn't need to be precise. place mixture in a spray
bottle. spray onto a lint free clothe and wipe the record.

for those in the states, there are two types of rubbing alcohol, make sure
it is isopropyl. the distilled water is sold in the supermarket or car
accesory stores.

(313)Code Assualt (was Fw: Jeff Mills Crate Diggin')

2003-02-03 Thread James Bucknell
do you mean code assault action/code assault on technica records, 1989?

i found a pile of 10 sealed copies in an old apartment building in brooklyn
nearly two years ago. i only took three copies.

if anybody wants to find out if the other seven are still there go see cisco
at whatever that record store is on west 28st between 6 and 7th. it might be
called downtown records, it mainly sells hip hop.

the guys used to have a big store. they downsized in the early 90s. all the
stock that wouldn't fit into the new store they dumped in an old apartment
building in brooklyn that cisco owns. when the most recent economic boom
made even apartments in outer brooklyn rent for a lot, he decided it was
time to empty the records out of the apartments. around about that time, i
walked into the store. apartment after apartment piled three feet high with
records.

oh yeah, ask to see the gold record of africa bambaata's planet rock hanging
on the wall of their office!

i've always loved house and techno for their minimalism--a few bits of
roland equipment and a four track reel to reel.

i find most contemporary tracks to be as overproduced as any bit of prog.
house/trance. it's a challenge to spend any money when i go record shopping.

instead, i've taken to re-editing older tracks and saving my money for final
scratch.

the sound system at gas (where fk played sat) is absolutely crap. that's why

Re: (313) Future Sound compilation on Rephlex

2002-12-17 Thread James Bucknell
that'll be the west side remix of the classic 'don't lead me' by house
master baldwin and paris grey. this mix isn't on the original 1987 release
and i've never come across a copy of this mix (except on the rephlex comp.)
which came out in 1993.

i know kool kat released an e.p. with three mixes of 'don't lead me', i
don't have it at hand, but i'm nearly certain that the west side mix isn't
one of them.

i've a few sealed copies of the original. i open one every now and then to
smell the air of chicago in 1987.

Re: (313) rhythm tracks?

2002-12-02 Thread James Bucknell
here are the details on the two jive releases:
jive rhythm tracks vol 2, (jive 1295-1-J 1982)
more jive rhythm tracks (jive va66003 1982)

farley put out two rhythm track e.ps on trax in 1986, funkin with the drums,
and funkin with the drums again.

relief records continued the chicago tradition with a number of releases
that had sample based rhythm tracks. dj tools v.4 has italo disco classic
klein and the mbo used for rhythm tracks.

a rhythm track is just another name for bonus beats. and the best mix on a
12" is the bonus beats.

Re: (313) Who used the 303 first..

2002-11-28 Thread James Bucknell
ALEXANDER ROBOTNICK used the 303 with squiggle oncan't remember the
track name, came out as a bootleg as 'love robot'. that is early 80s, and
should be included in any histroy of 303 use.
the swah pixies, an australian outfit that was part of the severed
heads/sydney industrial scene, used one in 82. i can't remember if they
released any recordings with the 303 on it. if so, it would have been
released on m squared.
is ian andrews still on the list? he should know if anybody in sydney in
those days released 303 tracks.

my 303+606 noodlings from the mid 80s are on a four track real to real in
the cupboard somehwere.

here's the tracklisting
peut etre
on and on (?)
leatherette (warm leatherette by grace jones?)
rappinhhood (tom tom club)
doughnut dog (that cat stevens track, also on the freddy fresh abstract funk
comp)
sampling dance
powerpill

who made on and on? it's a really good track. i was expecting what is
generally claimed to be the first house record--'on and on' by vince
lawrence and jesse saunders on jes say records.

so how are you meant to slow a record on the 1200s without touching the
platter?

the anchorage, inside the pylons of the brooklyn bridge! crap sound as it

the brick works in sydney park, sydney is the best illegal outdoor site i've

although the spot under the george washington bridge on the hudson river in
new york is pretty amazing, just a shame about the pys trance, 16 year olds
on angel dust, having to run across about 18 lanes of freeway traffic to get
there, and dudes threatening to throw you into the hudson if you don't hand

Re: (313) Hip Hop and Techno (was 8-Mile)

2002-11-13 Thread James Bucknell
there isn't much crossover in the birthplace of hip hop in the south
bronx/upper manhattan. when i'd go to the police athletics league gym on
118st and manhattan ave. any house, electro or techno cds i put on promptly
got thrown off and replaced by hot 97 (bringing you blazin hip hop). i
declined to dj at our block party because it was patently obvious that
nobody was interested in hearing anything but hip hop (and the electric
slide, of course). but block parties are a genre of their own.

Re: (313) deep house (was 100 BEST DJ IN THE WORLD (Mills)

2002-11-05 Thread James Bucknell
i'm a deep house (among other genres) dj who moved (back) to sydney after 10
years in new york. i can't get a booking playing deep house here. i get
booked to play techno and electro.
the stuff that people in sydney call deep house has nothing to do with the
stuff i play.
i go to nights billed as deep house here and they're playing progressive.
laylo and bushwacka are't deep house, and nor are peace division.

i hope someone can prove me wrong and tell me where they're playing real
house in sydney, i realy really want to go dancing.

maybe melbounre is better (i did get booked to play a house set in melbourne
at a club called honkytonks, but my records box never showed up).

Re: (313) to move or not to move.

2002-11-05 Thread James Bucknell
when people find out that i dj, it's not uncommon that they say they don't
like dance music. i then ask where they've been dancing, what clubs, what
djs. they usually reply that they don't go dancing, they just listened to
dance music at a friends place, on the radio etc.
that's when i point out that it's called dance music, not 'sitting on your
ass at home' listening music.
sure you can listen to it at home, but the place it makes sense, and the
place to judge it, is on a dancefloor. you can send a dance floor into
convulsions with just an 808 rhythm track. put that on the home stereo and
most people will think it sounds dull repetitive and boring.

and that's why i'm calling it dance music. just try shooting me.

one of the major problems with comtemporary dance music is that a lot of it
is actually made for listening, not dancing. there's a bigger market for
record companies making listening music. i'm referring to all the crap mix
cds, like the global series etc.

that confuses things even more. my copy of rhythm control has 'can u feel
it' with the chuck roberts vocal over the top. it sounds the same as the
trax release. it's the b side inside cut.

mine's a green label, black text, four tracks, 1987, no cat # that i can
see, on catch a beat records. the tracks are a)my house radio edit, my
house long version, b)my house dub mix, my house acapella.

although the acapella is no acapella, it's larry heard. on my copy
'acapella' has been crossed out with pen.

(313) deep house download help

2002-09-30 Thread James Bucknell
i'm having trouble downloading mp3 files from deep house pages. i'm on a mac
using explorer. the mix isn't downloded by the downlaod manager. instead it
seems to end up in the cache as a useless, non mp3 file.
anybody had similar problems? any suggestions?
thanks

Re: (313) Whatever happened to...

2002-09-25 Thread James Bucknell
the burrel brothers released tracks after the demise of nu groove. i have
one or two, but they're buried deep.
i'll say a prayer for you, a burrel release (as equation) on nu groove, was
been re-released on tu chicks last year.
as for some favourite nu groove releases:
project 86 'total recall'
basil hardhouse 'city streets'
the sound vandals 'on your way'
33 1/3 queen searhin e.p. i hate the title track--it just sounds like bad
new york hard house to me. but the other 5 cuts are brilliant deep house.

Re: [313] Fw: 28 SEPT. JEFF MILLS / STEVE BICKNELL...

2002-09-18 Thread james bucknell
maybe francois k was just trying to correct the balance of genre shifting
between cities. durring the mid 90s in new york there seemed to be a lot of
techno djs coming to new york and playing second rate garage/body and soul
styled sets. it seems to have tapered off after that. but rob hood always
tries to play hip hop sets in new york (or is that how he starts his sets
everywhere?)
