Re: (313) Model 500 in San Francisco for my friends at No Way Back

2012-11-20 Thread DB
Wish I could have made it down for this one. I haven't seen the
"new" Model 500 live show, only the one with Keith Tucker and Black Tony.

Would be nice to hear them on a Function One system, though I'd really
like to hear what they would sound like on a nice GSA (R.I.P.)
soundsystem :)

Thanks for the pics, you KNOW we appreciate them!

The sound in The Mezzanine was absolutely storming, I believe it's a
Funktion One system, really made M500 set that much more special,
kudos to the sound engineer!

'Time...Space...Transmat...' Model 500 is the sound of the Future.

Founder and 'Godfather of Techno' Juan Atkins' first group Cybotron
began making records in 1981. Tunes like the oft-sampled 'Clear'
helped define the sound of Electro while 'Techno City' provided the
name and blueprint for the new music coming from the Motor City in the
mid and late 80's.

Atkins began recording and performing as Model 500 in 1985. His
Metroplex imprint issued 'No UFO's' and 'Night Drive,' tunes that
embodied and informed the stripped down, futuristic, funky-electronic
ethos that was and is Detroit Techno. Further releases on European and
American labels solidified his position at the forefront of the genre.

Detroit veterans 'Mad Mike' Banks DJ Skurge snd Mark Taylor 'DJ
Vintage Future' joined Model 500 in 2008 and the four continue to
explore the possibilities and push the boundaries of the sound.

We're proud and honored to be hosting Model 500, performing live for
their 1st West Coast appearance, along with resident DJ's Conor,
Solar, and Josh Cheon (Dark Entries Records, Honey Soundsystem) at the
3rd Anniversary of No Way Back. Join us at Mezzanine on November 16th
and witness the Future...

Thank you for 3 years of support.

I think you're right - the style of the video & wetsuits added a whole
new dimension to the music (and the artists). I might not hear Model 500
the same way again after watching - lol!

I do enjoy cheesy music videos tho' - good fun to laugh while listening
to cool music.

There's something about that old video aesthetic that I always love
though. Something about the grainy video quality that I always really
like, no matter what the subject is. I don't watch a lot of music
videos but I'm seeing some attempts to parrot that with new stuff
these daysto mixed results. example:

Wow! (meaning bad, not wow meaning good). Awesome song, but
such a crap vid. Surely the label had enough budget to come up
with something
better than that? It is sad that that video might have introduced
some MTVers to

Juan's music but that it was paired with those horrid visuals.

RE: (313) Model 500 / Moritz... etc @ DEAF next week

2008-10-15 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Somehow I've never got round to DEAF [even though it's only a short and
inexpensive hop away] and the line-ups just seem to keep getting better every
year.

Well done Eamonn. I'm signing up so I can get an early reminder before the next
one.

Ken

Re: (313) Model 500 "Starlight" releases

2008-09-19 Thread Jeffrey Richards
Yeah, I have this one: http://www.discogs.com/release/1195471

I really liked the Soultek remix on this one. He was the only one that tried
to do anything really different from the original. Deepchords mix is OK in my
book, but I could have lived with out one of the Echospace mixes and the
Convextion mix is just forgettable.

As for the digital files, I really like the S Y N T H mix, and Sean Deason
isn't bad at all, again a real different feal all together on that one. If you
ask me, the Echospace unreleased dub should have been on the record instead of
the one that is there now.

Since Stephen Hitchell was forced to sell MP3s because of so many being
distributed for free that it could maybe work in reverse? I am thinking of
sending him a letter and letting him know that I am going to D/L it illegally,
and pay for it when it comes out on vinyl...

of course I wouldn't D/L it illegally ;-)

When we feel strongly about something, it is our natural desire to let others
know. Now there is a place to do just that.

Great article from Thomas Cox. Thanks for the tip, Wojtek.
My fave line is when Juan says:

working on some new stuff, a new album to be released on Metroplex."

Looking forward to that.

Well, now that Tom has unsubbed and the list is going to be "quiet"
without him, I've decided to fill the gap temporarily with a quick
report of Model 500 who played live here in Glasgow for Rubadub's 16th
birthday party.

There was a fair amount of preparation needed for the gig so we were
all pretty hyped up about it- there were also folk buying tickets for
the show who hadn't been seen out for 10 years or more so the pressure
was on to make sure it was night worth venturing out for the "silver
surfers".

After an hour or so of warm up from the Rubadub DJ's it was all go- we
had to lock the doors at 1 AM leaving a queue half way down the street
for the unfortunates without tickets. Juan, Mike, Skurge and Mark
Tayor took the stage and it all just exploded from there- Cosmic Cars,
The Chase, No UFOs, Clear, an extended jam on Game One, Alleys Of Your
Mindahh, it was all just too good. The beats are pre-recorded with
Skurge mixing them in but all the basslines and synth parts were
played by the guys live- Mike did the basslines, Mark Taylor did the
lead melodies and Juan awas doing all the vocoder vocals and
additional synth parts- it was loose enough that you knew it was live
but tight enough that you didn't loose any of the mechanical drive of
good Techno/Electro- even just teh odd unexpted extra bass not or solo
was enough to remind you that it was 4 guys and not 4 machines making
all the noise.

Best bits- Juan adlibbing the lyrics to Dead Or Alive's "You Spin Me
Round (like A Record Baby)" over the top of Game One, the general
hug-fest that broke out at the front of the stage towards the end
where it seemed like half the crowd were all together in mass huddle
of warmth and general goodness, seeing Marco Bernardi's smile when
Marty dropped his remix on the new Iridite after Model 500 had
finished...lot's of shining little moments mostly lost in the fog
now!

Then it was back to our Warehouse near Glasgow Airport for the After
Party - Skurge was on the decks straight away and tore it up for a
good couple of hours- in my opinion he's about the best of the UR DJs
because he plays the widest variety of music- the best of the UR back
cat AND a wicked variety of other stuff too. Mike and the rest of the
guys were all there too, just hanging out and enjoying the vibes. We
had a good couple of hundred people there and no bouncers needed at
all- good people, good music, great night.

Eventually the night had to end- think I staggered out at around
12-ish to the most brutal sunny day I remember in a long time- watched
the football (Rangers v Celtic!) at a friends house and collapsed
about 4ish into a 16 hour sleep. Feeling pretty bad today but not as
bad as Wilba, Ruadub head honcho who had to get up on the Sunday
afternoon to take Mike and the guys up to Loch Lomond (he loves the
hills of Scotland does Mike!) and therefore didn't have the luxury of
the 16 hour sleep :)

It was just a total music-centred, feel good sort of night and really
helped me remember that there's more to Techno that arguing endlessley
about small details on internet forums :)

cheers

They played in The Hague last year, the sound was awefull there but
the set was really good though! Actually it was how Jason described
it. Only the line up was a bit different back then with Skurge, MM and
Blak Tony (if i recall it correclty) and Juan of course. Was a great
night with Universe 2 Universe playing before them ;-)

Hey Francis- this time is was actually at the Art School- we needed a
bigger venue than Club 69 so that we could afford to pay the guys'
fee- Club 69 only holds 150 people and we would have to charged about
40 quid a ticket :) They did a free gig there back in July (I think)
last year which I couldn't go to as I had booked a nice dinner with my
girlfriend without checking the date first.AND I had to come in to
work to hear all about it on Monday morning. Rubbing salt in the
wounds and all that!

We did make some upgrades to the Art School though- for anyone who
hasn't been before it's a bit of a Gym Hall sort of venue with a WEAK
sound system and plastic glassses (bo!)...we got a really nice
sounding rig that was also very loud- we had to gaffa tape the
keyboards to their stands on stage to stop them vibrating right off at
the sound check! Capacity was 800 people but we squeezed a few more
in and it worked out just fine- intense but not so you were getting
constantly elbowed by people going to the bar.

Maybe we are just that much more effete cheese eaters here in Europe,

R&S has a great back catalog -- but I wonder if any of the artists
ever got any additonal payments for represses. I'm not saying they're
shady, but they sure haven't demonstrated a steady hand on the
business side of things.

quality of them is pretty ok - and when did a bootlegger ever care about
quality?

while we're on the subject, did anyone here ever used to go to the 99 shop

A friend of mine has just gone off on his world travels, and he insisted
that I put the whole 28 minutes of I Wanna Be There on a mix tape I did for
his travels.

And, for me at least, the tracks really evoke a feeling of travel or a
voyage of some sort, particularly 'Neptune', which incidentally I think is
the greatest piece of techno ever.

One of the early string-infused soulful techno tracks I'd imagine...

Not one of my favourite Model 500 tracks but still great. Probably sounds
more like Derrick May actually now that I think of it. But of course one of
the great things about Juan Atkins is his versatility.

My favourite track on that 12" is actually "Wanderer" - just a bit more
unique and quirky I think.

Anyway, I'd say buy it.

i can't remember any other tracks from the ep than "Ocean to Ocean
(vocal mix)", which is so beautiful track that you should buy few extra
copies :)

yeah, there is instrumental of "Ocean to Ocean", and infoworld, and one
other track.. maybe it was "wanderer" or something. i have 12" somewhere
in my shelf, but didn't find it with quick glance through.

just buy it. it's excellent.

Re: [313] Model 500 - Simple question

2000-12-20 Thread Phonopsia
It has the edit, a Juan Atkins remix, a WaxDoctor remix and a nice big
electro remix from Dave Angel.

Not really essential, but nice to have, particularly for the Dave Angel
remix. Personally, I'd rather have Sonic Sunset on vinyl though.
