Awesome, response. Cheers

Pure from Detroit isn't always listening. Knowing where to get a
shamrock shake is. My only physical knowledge of the city is from my
dad's ex-leafblower business Sturdiluxe Sweepers, whereby he'd fly in
during the early nineties(?), and comeback with non-matching t-shirts
saying "go to Hell, Michigan", with a picture of the devil on it with a
pitchfork. It was/ probably still is/ a great tshirt to wear to church
functions and such and so forth, for conversation purposes alone.

I recall some notion of journalism from you? Or a Neil Olivierra link?
Or maybe just seeing you 'round DetroitLuv before the collective spoils
made all those seniors jack it all in. I have a good mind to visit
Detroit this year or next. I require several crates of records from
Puzzlebox and threads alone, I recall rwys producin' let alone oh dose
salt mines..

I have forwarded to a friend in New York. There was certainly a time,
early Internet, when I'd think nothing if browsing cd now/ wow or
whatever and the allmusicguide to shop cross dem big pond. These days,
unless I'm going bag hunting from case, it is a rare ballache to push
tariffs through customs without using Amazon or eBay correctly.

Anyhow, that's enough for those juniors not familiar enough with my
language problems and parsing.

cheers

video on 10 years of No Way Back

2018-03-03 Thread Fred Heutte
The track No Way Back was released 32 years ago -- basically one
and a half human generations and many more musical generations ago.
It was part of a sonic breakthrough that seemed raw and unlimited and
unfinished at the time . . . and still does. And so does the party that
took the name and the inspiration . . .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Wf4uHyfW5g

I wasn't at the original bank blizzard party but have been at all the
ones during the festival. Many many great moments: Carlos Souffront
gave me a ride to Bo-House (Bohemian National Home) one year
and I am quite sure neither of us remember very much about that
night . . . but it was fantastic . . . more I do remember -- Tin Man doing
his live 303 set last year . . . all the great acid house-sourced and
inspired sets -- Servito and Plaslaiko and BMG with his laptop
mashups . . . but most of all the impromptu 2x2 set Carlos and Patrick
Russell did at 5 am at 1515 Broadway that was likely the most off-the-
chain hour and a half I will ever experience . . .

Not a fan of the Tangent, but the party has gotten so big and
popular it has to be somewhere with a lot of square footage.
There's no way to set a long term plan for something like this
(speaking as a founding member of an SF-based party collective
that has been going since 1994), so when it's there you go for it.

(313) Chilli Space 10 compilation 2x12

2014-02-28 Thread Jernej Marusic
A bit of shameless promotion. Though it's not directly Detroit related, there's
a strong Detroit influence present in a lot of the music.
I'm present on this compilation under my own as Octex and as part of Ago Tela.

Chilli Space 10 is a compilation of the freshest sub-alpine electronic music
from Slovenia. After 12 years and 9 CD-only releases, the tenth installment has
finally found its way onto vinyl! The double LP album contains stylistically
diverse music from Slovenia's electronic music underground. The compilation
features exclusive tracks by artists such as Ago Tela, Octex, iTurk,
Electrosaurus and others. A must for lovers of deep dubbed-out electronic
music!
Released today, 28th of February, distributed by Triple Vision

Get Familiar With Detroit Techno: 10 Essential Songs

Wills Glasspiegel and Marlon Bishop

May 27, 2011

Although widely associated with Europe, techno music was invented in
Detroit and its suburbs in the early 1980s by young African-Americans
armed with drum machines, futurist ideals and a predilection for
Kraftwerk. Artists like Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson
used whatever technology they could get their hands on to pioneer a
cutting-edge sound made up of growling synths and driving dance beats.
In the process, they set in motion one of the essential musical
movements of the 20th century.

The music eventually found its largest audience across the Atlantic,
but most of the original techno innovators still work out of the Motor
City. This Memorial Day weekend most will be in town for the annual
Movement Electronic Music Festival. You can hear the Movement
Electronic Music Festival live from Detroit streaming all weekend at
Resident Advisor.

In the list below originators, producers, DJs, label owners and
musicologists pick 10 tracks that define the Detroit techno sound.

Wills Glasspiegel and Marlon Bishop spoke to the musicians and writer
below in the course of reporting a story for All Things Considered and
producing a radio documentary on Detroit techno and Chicago house for
Afropop Worldwide.

The 10 Essential Tracks

Juan Atkins on Cosmic Cars by Cybotron (1982)

On Cosmic Cars, I envisioned being in a car and driving on the
highway, and all of a sudden just taking off and going into space. My
music has always to a certain degree been about a certain escapist
attitude. Because there are times that you can be in a city like
Detroit and it can get really bad. You just want to fly away. Sometimes
you wish you could just sail off to another time and space. A lot of my
tracks allude to that kind of adventure.

JUAN ATKINS is often considered to be the father of techno. As a
teenager growing up in the Detroit suburb of Belleville, Atkins made
bold musical experiments with a Korg MS-10 synthesizer and a tape deck,
eventually releasing the genre's earliest tracks under the names
Cybotron and Model 500.

Mark Flash on Alleys of Your Mind by Cybotron (1981)

Oh, man. I heard it for the first time in my mom's basement, washing
clothes, and it came on the radio. And I was like, Oh. My. God. I was
listening to The Electrifying Mojo. That track blew my mind. I turned
the washer off and went and just stood there because it felt so good I
couldn't even move. That was just the most awesome song I had ever
heard. I bought two copies when it first came out. I was like, What is
this guy thinking? What got me most was the sound, the beat — that was
the first time electronic music really got to me. I knew Planet Rock
already, but Alleys Of Your Mind was a different sound all together.

MARK FLASH is a Detroit percussionist, DJ and producer. As a kid, his
musician father moved their family from Brooklyn to Detroit to try to
make it in Motown. While his father's dreams failed, Flash made up for
it by becoming a name in the local rave scene.

Brendan Gillen on Sharevari by A Number of Names (1981)

The guys who did Sharevari told me an anecdote about going to a party
in 1980 in Detroit, a high-school party. It was one of these backyard
parties where somebody was lucky enough to have a pool. They tried to
make the parties seem elite, so they had elite names like Gables,
which was complete with a Clark Gables logo. They even wore satin
jackets. There were a bunch of groups and Charivari was the name of one
these groups, and that's where the band got the name of this tune. So
the story goes that they went to this party and the DJ was doing the
trick of playing with two copies of the same record at once. The DJ was
doing it with the Italo Disco record, Holly Dolly by Kano [the group
sampled by Tag Team on Whoomp There It Is]. The DJ would play these
records and instead of Holly, Dolly, it would go Holly, Holly,
Dolly, Dolly. That's how they got to Share, Vari, Share Share, Vari
Vari. That's them imitating what the DJ did. Most people say this is
the first record of Detroit techno.

BRENDAN GILLEN fell in love with Detroit techno while attending college
in nearby Ann Arbor. Today, he's one half of the experimental techno
group Ectomorph, manager of the record label Interdimensional
Transmissions and a walking encyclopedia of Detroit techno trivia.

Carl Craig on No UFOs by Model 500 (1985)

We had a lot of great music that was on the radio. It was easy as a kid
to hear the newest music from Detroit because it was being supported on
the radio back then. When I first heard No UFOs, which was Juan
Atkins' first independent record on Metroplex, it was being played at 5
o'clock drive time on weekdays. It wasn't just at nighttime or midday.
It was drive time, so it really gave me

(313) Remixers: Knock yourself out on For Delia Derbyshire 2010-03-10

2011-03-12 Thread kent williams
Again, I put up a new album yesterday:

http://chaircrusher.bandcamp.com/album/for-delia-derbyshire-2010-03-10

You can listen on line, download for free, or pay something for it,
your option. It is marked 'all rights reserved' but that's just
because the Creative Commons license don't have a place for the
license I'd like which is Use, remix, share with attribution, but
license the music for commercial use.

Be that as it may... aside from its 'merits' as a piece of 'music'
there are a lot of distinctive sounds contained in the 5 parts of this
album I would love it if people would sample it and make new works
with it. If you're interested, download the parts (which are
available in lossless FLAC format) and do your worst with them.

I'd like to collect them for a second Bandcamp release, and if I make
any money off it, I'll give you 80% of the proceeds.

and ambient and even some dubstep flavors in there. Check out the above link

the full playlist. I also just finished up a new ambient mix to round out the
year, more info on that one

(313) Octave One/MS-10

2010-03-12 Thread Odeluga, Ken

Octave One decided to mark 20 years of doing techno with a new label and, I
think, a new website.

A little curiously, they've named it after the catalogue number of their one
and only release on Transmat, MS-10.

We all know that release had a little more than history behind it, but the guys
have taken the trouble to namecheck Derrick May on the website.

I hope that any accompanying new material might show a little more edge than
has been found in their material of late.

That Direct Beat release is from Lorne Burden, the youngest of the
Burden brothers (damn they are The Jacksons of techno ;-)). He also
released as Kaotic Special Rhythm.

I think that the new Octave One is banging, it reminded me a lot of
Empower and their early work.

but would like to do something music related while I'm in town. So any

(313) CHICAGO - Fri.8/21 - JACKSON presents The Ghostly 10 Yr Anniv feat. TYCHO, SOLVENT, KMC, DARK PARTY, more!

2009-08-19 Thread Ray Rodriguez / Approaching Serpents
Hello Chicago-area friends-
As Ghostly International hits the 10-year mark, the label is throwing
a series of pretty-big-deal parties in select locations across the
globe. Having torn the roofs off Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit,
Miami's Winter Music Conference, and Detroit's Movement festival,
Ghostly now aims its music cannons at Chicago. The evening's bill
includes music/design phenomenon TYCHO, melodic electro legend
SOLVENT, local industrial legends KILL MEMORY CRASH, and Eliot Lipp's
upbeat, electro-funk duo DARK PARTY. A DJ set from MIKE SERVITO rounds
out a night of truly outstanding music. Looking forward to a GREAT
show on Friday - see you all there!

Hello Chicago-land 313 friends-

This will surely be a huge event and some of the best music you'll ever
hear. Please join us for this rare, intimate performance with METRO AREA

DARK PARTY (aka the dance side-project of Eliot Lipp + Leo 123) will kick
off the night at 9pm sharp! Hope to see you there!

Also, on Saturday night, ELIOT LIPP is performing live at Abbey Pub, which
will definitely be another great show. Info further below.

METRO AREA (Environ - NYC)

The brainchild of veteran producers Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani, Metro
Area was born out of the pair's somewhat dichotomous love for both the old
moods of RB, disco and boogie and the more cutting-edge sound of innovative
house and techno. Metro Area brings back the soulful experimentation of the
early club classics, mixing live and electronic instruments. Simultaneously,
the mood and minimalism of more recent dance music forms creep into the mix:
Detroit's cold futurism, Chicago's abstract track-modes, and the warmth of
New York and New Jersey's deep house.

Jeff Samuel - Spectral Sound, Poker Flat, Trapez, Contexterrior,
Frankie [Berlin]

Jeff Samuel's exposure to electronic music came through the
underground scenes of Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. Jeff began his
DJ career in 1996, getting his first breaks at the legendary
ele_mental parties in Columbus. Soon after, he purchased his first
synth and drum machine.

Music from his first demo was signed to the Frankfurt label Lo-fi
Stereo. The Bidooba single was released in 1999 and
featured a remix from Kompakt's Michael Mayer. Other tracks
from the same demo found their way to minimal techno pioneer Daniel
Bell, who released them on his 7th City label in 2001. That same
year, Jeff contributed the track Lost to the
mysterious Remains label in NYC.

Jeff pushed into the new millennium continuing his career. 2002
proved to be a significant year which saw his 'Digital
Self' Tektite EP remixed by Ricardo Villalobos, his abstract
material released by UK label Emoticon, and the beginning of a long
relationship with Cologne-based Trapez Recordings. He also left
Ohio for the northwestern port city of Seattle, where he pursued a
career as a Sound Designer in the videogame industry.

Throughout the first half of the new decade, Jeff greatly expanded
his discography. He released EP's for such highly regarded
labels as Poker Flat, Spectral Sound, Contexterrior, Morris Audio,
Frankie and Karloff. A listen through these releases reveal
Jeff's true range as an artist. From experimental bleeps to
Chicago-influenced jack trax to the melodic direction of his recent
work, his unmistakable trademark style remains constant. This range
also carries over to Jeff's legendary DJ sets, which have
brought him all over the world. A sample of recent DJ outings
include Fabric (London), Yellow (Tokyo), Loft (Barcelona),
Panoramabar (Berlin) and the Batofar (Paris). Jeff has also
performed at both the DEMF and MUTEK electronic music festivals.

The latter half of the decade has propelled Jeff to the top of
techno's most respected artists and DJ's. In 2005, the
Logistic label re-released a series of his older material recorded
5 years earlier. In 2007, Trapez re-released Lost,
now considered a true classic of minimal techno. Across the years,
Jeff has also handled remix duties for such diverse artists as: Hot
Chip, Phonique, Der Dritte Raum and Guido Schneider.

The long-awaited Step LP was released by Trapez in
late 2006. Groove Magazine called it timeless, and
the album received 4 stars in URB as well as top marks in De:Bug,
Resident Advisor and many many more. Step was a
daring exploration into melodic techno, taking Jeff's pop
sensibilities as far as he could take them. It also marks the end
of the outwardly melodic direction his music has taken in later
years.

The present time is a fresh start for Jeff. He now counts himself
among the many artists who have relocated to Berlin to pursue music
full-time. He is currently maintaining a busy DJ schedule and
working on fresh sounds in his brand new studio.

Subject Recloose Live Band Show

I've been in New Zealand for the last two-plus weeks on vacation.
Had a chance to catch Recloose DJing at Sandwiches in Wellington
a week ago, and Matt's new project, the Recloose Live Band, at a
street fair in Petone just outside Welly last night. At the corner
of Jackson and Buick, would you believe.

The band is an eight-piece jazz/funk outfit playing mostly
originals and really is quite good, staying away from the cliches
that plague these kinds of efforts.

They have a brand-new CD out, Backwards and Sideways,
recorded live at the San Francisco Bath House club in Wellington
last November:

http://www.myspace.com/reclooseliveband

The CD doesn't have my favorite track, Sanctuary, but you can
hear it on Matt's Myspace page:

http://www.myspace.com/mattchicoine

I talked with Matt a little and I think he misses tha D a lot
(who doesn't of those who emigrate), and making a living doing
music is hard anywhere but harder when your main markets
are 10,000 miles away, but he's scraping through and doing it
grand. So, good on yer Matt. And will someone PLEASE book
this band for the Detroit music festival this year!

2006-12-11 Thread jurren baars
it's that time of the year where everyone posts their favorite records for
the year has almost ended, innit? it was not too hard for me to compile a
top 10, as i've not bought (much) more than 10 new releases this year...
unfortunately i just don't find the time anymore to spend in recordstores
checking the new releases out (not even had the chance to check that
convextion lp). curious to see what other people consider to be their
favorite records released this year. here are the ones i can think of:

quinn - no more words [delsin]
yoav b - language of an open heart [delsin]
nubian mindz - typewriter [delsin]
iken - aspects [real soon]
thom yorke - the drunkk machine [xl]
shawn j period - the come back [rude movements]
rekid - 85 space/rectroactive [soul jazz]
j dilla - donuts lp [stones throw]
aloe blacc - about love (remix) [stones throw]

reissue:

I've been waiting for this so that I can name these:

Various - Lifeworks Volume 1
Liquid People - Son Of Dragon
Convextion - Convextion

These were easy since they made me think this should be on the best of

after I take a closer look on what I've bought this year...

Looking forward for other lists...

Heyho,

the next Jackin' Planets show is scheduled for next tuesday (june, 13th,
22:00gmt) where i'll be playing for 2 hours.
So if your worldcup madness allows you to take a break from football,
i'd be happy to jack your bodies :)

Who's for Brazil anyway...

You can tune in here http://electro.mthn.net:8400/listen.pls (shoutcast)
or read further info here
http://www.shouted.fm/index.php?area=electromodule=news/commentsid=2028
(german only, sorry).

Cheers,
Ronny
