Yeah, he was pretty deep into Chicago & Detroit music, I believe he grew up in Chicago, was pretty close to Ron Trent and was DJ'ing quite early in the piece, well before his career in fashion. From what it sounds like, he had quite a varied and excellent taste in musics. Re: Any reports on Mills, May & Melbourne Symphony?
I'm glad to hear someone else say this. I know that these orchestras are trying to attract different audiences and all, but it really is not very fitting. In the "performances" of this sort I've seen (a recent Carl Craig one comes to mind) button pushing looks really stupid next to bowed strings and woodwinds. One is a discipline that takes a decade to master. Derrick didn't even play the piano on his most famous tune. Think about that for the second. They are really not comparable, and don't even belong on the same stage. Any reports on Mills, May & Melbourne Symphony
Hi guys, Yeah i flew down to the Melbourne gig with Mills and May…. It rocked. Up in my top 5 gigs of all time. Mills was solid and he controlled the Orchestra. With May the Orchestra was more just playing his track. So it didn’t seem as if he has the same control as Mills did. Either way Mays section was REALLY good…. All his stuff worked really well. Icon was killer…. In fact i won’t start listing tracks as they all worked. He had 2 opera singers chiming in on a few tracks and it worked really well. Thanks all so far and hope to hear more. Would've loved to be there myself and experience it first hand. Not long ago really enjoyed Jeff's Exhibitionist 2 live show in Tokyo with G. Interesting - I'd be curious as to how that worked out as well. On another note, I'll be presenting a radio special this Friday on the work or Matt Cogger, who passed away when I wasn't looking. For 313 content, he interned with Derrick May at Transmat, and baby-sat the label while Derrick was cutting a DJ swath through Europe. He has significant releases on Irdial. Buzz, and New Electronica, These days, significant artists and individuals are slipping away in droves - I don't think I really need to name all the names. Most distressing are the ones who slip away unbeknownst, like Laura Gavoor, who showed me much kindness and hospitality when I trekked to Detroit in '95 for the 10th anniversary Metroplex do. I never got to talk all that much to Matt. I did a radio special feature in '97 on Lee Purkis, Cogger, and Luke Slater. I got to talk to Luke and Lee at length, but Matt was working in a tony drinking establishment in London at the time, so our hours mere pretty much disjoint - I did manage to wake him up, which wasn't appreciated. I found out about his demise recently quite by accident when I was researching his Irdial Cosmat DJ set. The special will be on Friday, Feb 5, 2016 at 10PM-2A Pacific time (GMT-8) on KFJC-FM, 89.7 (www.kfjc.org). Broadcasts are streamed live and archived for 2 weeks at kfjc.org. Re: Any reports on Mills, May & Melbourne Symphony?
My brother and his friends all went (I no longer live there). They all said it was amazing and that Derrick was the best and his music suited it the most. They came out and did a planned encore of a new track that was very awesome also. The amphitheater they played at is such a good venue too. Can't imagine it was anything but great. > On Jan 31, 2016, at 10:30 PM, Richard Hesterwrote: > > Interesting - I'd be curious as to how that worked out as well. > On another note, I'll be presenting a radio special this Friday on the work > or Matt Cogger, who passed away when I wasn't looking. Jeff Mills Live Cine-Mix to Fritz Lang’s Woman in the Moon SF
Looking forward to this one! Live Cine-Mix to Fritz Lang’s Woman in the Moon Detroit techno legend and long time sci-fi obsessive Jeff Mills brings his Cine-Mix to the Bay area for the first time with Fritz Lang’s 1929 silent science fiction classic The Woman in the Moon (Die Frau im Mond, German). Mills composes the soundtrack live while the film merges with modern electronic sounds, creating a perfect symbiosis between science fiction and techno. Following the performance, Mills talks space, time and the origins of his sound. (313) Mike Banks and Jeff Mills
Hi everyone, This inquiry may sound intrusive to many, but I can only assure you that it is for academic research purposes only, in a let's write history before it's too late spirit. I found on this page some pieces of information which are part verified, part faulty and part doubtful: http://www.copyrightencyclopedia.com/web-psychos-stalkers-and-pranksters-by-michael-a-banks/#b Here's what I'm trying to clarify: - Michael A. Banks, born 1961: we know that Mike Banks' full name is Michael Anthony Banks, but I have no way to know if 1961 is his accurate year of birth, even if in 1995 he said he was 33 years old - http://www.ele-mental.org/ele_ment/saiddid/mad_mike_speaks.html - but he still could have been born in 1962 - Jeffrey Earl Mills, born 1962: there we know that it's incorrect, since Jeff Mills was born in 1963. Therefore, I'm uncomfortable trusting this source when dealing with his full name. If anyone could help me confirm either Mike's year of birth or Jeff's full name, I would be very grateful! Thanks in advance for your help and happy holidays to you all, Mat

(313) Mills talking to the Detroit Free Press about his Wizard sets, influence of Motown, etc.
...and Detroit peeps: he's playing at Necto in Ann Arbor this Sunday... http://www.freep.com/article/20121011/ENT04/310110005 Producer and DJ Jeff Mills is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his label Axis Records. The Detroit native first became prominent in the mid-'80s, spinning now-legendary mixes as the Wizard on Detroit radio station WJLB-FM (97.9). Then he became an international star in electronic music circles by cofounding the Underground Resistance techno collective and later starting Axis. Now based in Chicago, Mills has become one of the world's most coveted DJs and techno producers. Axis just released Sequence: A Retrospective of Axis Records, a 320-page photographic book complete with a 30-track compilation on a USB card. It shows all the conceptual projects, design schemes, product and merchandise and a lot of other information, Mills says. This weekend, he'll revisit his roots and spin a Wizard set at the Necto in Ann Arbor, where he used to be a resident DJ. QUESTION: You used to spin at Necto (then known as Nectarine Ballroom) three night a week in the late '80s. What are some of your memories from those gigs? ANSWER: There are many. Until then, I had managed many DJ residencies in and around Detroit, but it wasn't until securing the Nectarine Ballroom that I could really try new ideas and experiment with the audience. With the help of my older brother Dennis, who oversaw the production, I was able to incorporate various equipment setups and be more conceptual with the music. An important aspect was that I was positioned on the dance floor, in and along with the people. I believe this made the relationship with the audience much stronger. I remember rushing back from Detroit to Ann Arbor, because I had to deliver my Wizard radio show to WJLB. I remember routinely giving hand signals to the lighting engineer, Mad Hatter, informing him how many minutes I wanted to play at the end of the party. I remember things like certain people always dancing in the same position for every party. I remember a Halloween party where I dressed up as a prisoner and spun the whole night with handcuffs on. We used to have a lot of fun. Q: How much planning was required for Wizard sets? A: There was a lot. Literally the entire day would be spent searching the record shops and various places for music to play for the show that evening. When the outlets in Detroit weren't enough, I would drive to Chicago, Toronto and to other cities get new music. At WDRQ 93 FM, in addition to my salary, I was given a music-spending budget. This would allow me to find and grab anything I thought was worthy of programming. I also had the rare ability to play anything I wanted -- whenever. This way, there was not a pre-approval period, which means, music was played on the radio as soon as possible. All the shows at WDRQ were live. At WJLB, the first few years were live, but the recording and music equipment technology was getting better, which allowed me to create more complex shows and multi-track mixes. With this, I could play more new music in a shorter time span. Working with these recording machines gave me the idea to start making the music earlier in the day and playing it live as if it were new records that just came out. Competitively, I was quite fierce. When new records would arrive at record shops, I would go in and buy all the copies so that I would have the only ones in the city. Q: What defines a Wizard set for you? A: A DJ set that encompasses various styles and forms of music. Not always in a humorous or comical way, but with sincerity and passion. Even though I was quite young then, I was old enough to know the power of music. I was aware that if many people heard the right thing at the right time, it could make a world's difference for the person who made it. A Wizard set for me is a DJ set that has the motive of enticing the listener enough so that he or she would go out and buy the record. While on the radio, I knew that I only had a small time frame to make my point, so playing the entire song would have taken up too much time. A way of quick mixing was something I developed. I would only play the best parts of the song in order to convince the listener to want to hear more. Most of the time, it worked. Q: What elements or techniques have you added to your DJing style? A: Ironically, I never lost my sense of what I'm doing. I still very much believe that music is best served hot, so I go through much effort to make this happen. My objective has not changed and I've maintained the process, though it's more complex and involves a team of people. I still hope to bring new things to the listener. ... I'm still being paid to inform people of new music. For technique, I've become wiser with my technical skill. I use hand speed and agility only when it's called for -- not just doing it for the sake of showing off or battling other DJs. Technology can only take the DJ so far. It's helpful

You're not wrong at all Francis - you have to place it on the turntable spindle as close to centered as you can and yes, there's only a small usable area for the music - think it might be about 5 mins worth - the grooves seem very tight but I was suprised by how good it all sounded. You might have difficulty with a semi-automatic turntable that switches off at the end of a side. Not so good for scratching and quick cuts then! cheers Jason On 9 June 2010 11:27, fran...@thatamazingthing.com wrote: I'm a little puzzled about some of the technical details also: What size is the hole in the middle? RE: (313) Jeff Mills @ Club Contemporary Classical, Berghain Berlin
Club Contemporary Classical Jeff Mills, Toca Loca, Kathleen Supové, VJ Safy Sniper 10-9-2009, Berghain, Berlin CLUB CONTEMPORARY CLASSICAL (C3) is dedicated to innovative mergings between classical music and club culture, presenting high-quality works which fit a club interior both aesthetically and aurally. Throughout the history of Western music, serious music has been paired by composers with popular material, thereby pushing forward the development of the art form. This tradition continues today through composers utilizing techniques and aesthetics common to club culture and electronic music such as repetition, sampling or the integration of visuals. As an important location for classical music and the current world capital of the club scene, Berlin makes a highly suitable location for what is perhaps the first festival to exclusively showcase only music that blurs the boundaries between these two, usually very separate, worlds. C3 aims to open the ears of club and classical music fans, widening the audience-base for both, and to promote creative dialog between both scenes. Connections between art forms is also a focal point of the festival location, the Berghain, considered one of the world's top clubs (2007 and 2008 readers' survey, International DJ Magazine). The artists featured in the C3 program were selected to reflect the wide variety of approaches underway internationally and are but a small representation of activity taking place in isolated pockets worldwide. Their work is presented in short, live sets of approximately 45 to 60 minutes accompanied by visuals. On the final night, DJs take over where the live performers leave off, building a purely electronic bridge from contemporary classical stage to dance floor. This is Glasgow - I'm afraid girls aren't into Techno here as a rule. I remember going to Sonar for the first time in 1999 and being genuinely amazed at the mix of the crowd there dancing to Mills - it was nearly 50/50! We've done some instores at the shop recently and there was a reasonable turnout of ladies for Cooly G at the Hyperdub event - don't think there was many for Surgeon though :) 2009/6/25 mislav bobic mis...@pointsingapore.com.sg: just watched that one as well ! totally agree. wonder why there are no girls in that club though ;-)) On Jun 25, 2009, at 2:49 AM, ja...@iridite.com wrote: Damn- that's a really good interview. Jason, I can assure you that most Techno events are sausage parties on this side of the ocean as well.:) jw On Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 4:37 AM, ja...@iridite.comja...@iridite.com wrote: This is Glasgow - I'm afraid girls aren't into Techno here as a rule.
