By the way, I nuanced what you didn't yourself. You tweeted, for

the 313 listserv is a place where racists & sexists thrive.

the 313 Detroit techno listserv is a place where whitesplaining is
the name of the game. & if you don't whitesplain & don't support the
whitesplainers full tilt, you're villainous.

techno and toxic whiteness are BFF. boyfriends 4ever.

the 313 listserv is a place where mostly elderly white men will tell
you who to listen to and who to like and what to think about it.

on the 313 Detroit techno listserv, i'm accused, by kent williams,
the elderly white man moderator, of making the list a shadow of what
it used 2B. it's been dead [Skull] 4 years. boring AF. it's a shadow
of its own death.

I mean... The 313 list might better be (passively or actively)
supported by its members, instead of openly accused of such
behaviour, right?

What do the other members think of this?

I'm quite sure that anyone who's able to communicate constructively
or at least neutrally in an interpersonal sense (which is simply due
as long as anyone doesn't cross lines with someone else), is welcome
here. Of whatever nationality, age, being a he/she/they, and with
any possible skin colour or religion. As long as the love for
Detroit and its culture is a structural link.
And whoever crosses lines in whatever sense to anyone, should be
able (or brave enough) to be confronted with that, get into a
righteous exchange, and take any eventual apt message, to get
straight with facts and people. They
should not be blocked or unsubbed necessarily, but anyone in such
interaction should be or feel invited to get into fair overthinking
and conclusion, based on healthy exchange - with anyone being free
of personal conclusion, but not free of interpersonal respect.
Unless anything bad will take over and gets installed. A forum only
exists by grace of anyone's constructive behaviour.

This, at least, is my way of looking upon this.

2017-12-16 Thread Brian Prince
Yo Logic7, good to hear from you again.

Nice find! Yeah, a lot of the Japanese game composers in the early 90’s were
listening to records from Detroit and Chicago. Another great example is the
Streets of Rage 2 soundtrack from 1992 by Yuzo Kishiro:

https://youtu.be/_62PVfghXtc

(I dubbed the whole soundtrack from that game to tape so I could listen to it
on my Walkman on the school bus)

Hearing that stuff when I was 12 and 13 primed me for the Tresor compilations I
started picking up when I was 14 and 15.

Subject: 313 music in the oddest of places.

Hey y'all... it's the member formerly known as Logic7

I've been on an old video game kick, particularly old vertical shooters like
Twin Cobra, Raiden, and the many bullet hell shooters from companies like Cave.
While getting my fix I ran across a game called Battle Garegga by
Raizing/Eighting. I'm playing for the first time a couple of nights ago in all
of it's early bullet hell goodness when I get through the first level. The
second level starts and the music changes and a melody of of stab chords starts
playing... And I recognize it almost immediately. I played for less than a
minute more and had to figure this out 'cause it sounded like a direct rip of
something I've heard before. I paused MAME and hit Youtube for old Mills and
UR, and I find the track: Jupiter Jazz by Underground Resistance.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQv3dCkY2Tk
More Google-fu turns up the music from Battle Garegga; a double-CD composed by
Manabu Namiki, released last December. Among the track listing was the name of
the track for the second level of the game: Underwater Rampart (an obvious nod
to UR)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYbINBnYeFA
^^^ That's the original version from the arcade game. The game wold be released
for the Sega Saturn with a re-recorded version with different instruments
instead of the Yamaha YM2151 4-op, 8 part FM chip used in the arcade game's
system board (as well as the Yamaha DX100). With the composer's name, I ran
across an interview with him where he states this:

http://squareenixmusic.com/features/interviews/manabunamiki.shtml

"... I held a great admiration for techno music, and I had a good deal of
respect for the Detroit techno artists in particular: Derrick May, Underground
Resistance, and Carl Craig. The main programmer of Battle Garegga was also a
fan of their music. Inspired by their music, I almost felt that I had something
of a mission to take that energy and breathe life into the game's music.
Battle Garegga used FM synth and ADPCM synth for its hardware. This equipment
was obsolete compared to the standards of other arcade games in 1995, so I
needed to make full use of it to design the sound for this radical new shooting
game. I made use of all the skill I had accumulated with this hardware at NMK,
and I also studied Hitoshi Sakimoto's use of FM synth carefully.
The sound of Battle Garegga was influenced by my friends at Raizing, by Detroit
techno, by Summer Carnival '92 Recca, by FM and ADPCM (YM2151 and MSM6295), and
by the game music of Hitoshi Sakimoto and Shinji Hosoe, all of these people and
things I respect..."
Since he's also done music for Cave (creators of my favorite bullet hell
shooters), I'm now on a mission to find anything else he's slipped into his
games that have a very Detroit-inspired sound.

Hi Fred,

I know you're busy 'nd all, but I have to say: that Monongahela Road
record has to be perhaps one of my favourite of one of your tracks.
Unless of course, you can recommend something finer, non-Dust Science of
course.

Sorry to intrude upon the "Thomas D. Cox, Jr. personal soapbox 313

FYI, digital download sales don't amount to anything. Still waiting to

I suppose that shouldn't be a surprise to me, but I didn't know. That
makes some sense though. It seems almost impossible for most people to
make money making music these days.

It would have been great to be a producer during the 90's. I bought a
lot of vinyl then too.

It's remarkable how limited a lot of electro vinyl releases would seem
to be currently. It looks like releases of just 100-250 records for even
the most well known artists. Good releases have some rarity, yet demand
is not what it was either.

I tried to start a label beginning about 15 years ago. I probably would
have kept releasing vinyl, but 9/11 happened which seemed to suck the life
out of the dance vinyl world, I lost my job and didn't have $1500 to press
records, and after that, well, the whole world changed.

But weirdly, I've been selling this record again in Europe through
Discogs, so hey maybe it's time has finally arrived.

I miraculously still had the digital masters on a backup disk, mastered
them digitally, and uploaded them to BandCamp. As far as I can detect, no
one ever digitized and uploaded them before; whether that means I slipped
it into the marketplace just before digital music really caught on, or
maybe DJs thought it qualified as a secret weapon to hoard, I dunno.

Awesome again. Nothing personal but it only took me a half second to
switch over to the mix from the old Mike Paradinas tracks I was
listening to on Soundcloud (which are pretty much shite so far).

Any mix which opens with some Lardossian Cruiser is good in my book.

do have first hand experience of booking dealing with him and he was a real

I hope he sorts all this stuff out as his by far one of the best djs I ever

I really don't have an opinion on what TP is doing...but I do have a couple of
thoughts

One-as I have also had the opportunity to perform with, and talk with
Terrence...I don't find him to be a 'superstar' dj...I find him to be almost a
total square peg. To me, that doesn't matter much. As I have been following
this, I've had a couple of feelings about it. One-many people enjoy kicking
you while you're down. And, two: This music business has always been a game
played by people with honest hearts against those who would rather eat your
heart for breakfast.

My hope is that he'll tell us all the story in some public way (whether he
'makes his goal' or not). I believe it could be a great cautionary
tale-because some kid with a good ear and stars in their eyes needs to know
that this business and life have a dark side. I've lived the good times and
the bad in music, and can say with great talent comes great pain.

I refuse to trash TP publicly. I do think that on its face this issue
looks horrible for him and his 'image.' As a believer in God, it also can be
difficult for the non-secular among us to not think of Televangelists begging
for money before 'God calls me home.' I only hope that he is able to make a
resolution.

Personally-I've been homeless TWICE, lost 75% of my records, all my memorabilia
and two different hardware studio setups already...and I've never, NEVER been
able to find an agent willing to work for me. One day it may happen.

However you look at this situation-it's really quite sad and painful to watch.
If you like being uncomfortable, it's a great drama.

I'll keep my eyes on something more positive instead.

LIke I said, I have no idea what happened with Terrence, and people who are
professionals should show up when they're expected and do what they do.
Missing gigs as a DJ is really hard to live down. As an example, Paul Johnson
got a reputation as a no show, and I think that it still effects the number and
quality of bookings he gets to this day.

I just want people to know that whatever happened, TP is a human being too.
There's a tendency -- and I'm not accusing anyone on this list per se -- to
pile on when someone's down, and I couldn't see it happen to someone I know and
respect and hold my tongue.

very sad to hear about TP's personal circumstances and i wish him all the best .
i do wish though that the issue with the promoters was handled a bit better .
most promoters are actually reasonable . you do get idiots same as in any other
job but i do believe that when you give good reasons for canceling shows to
promoters and give them time to find a replacement dj and working on solutions
with them then a good way can be found in resolving issues . i work with mainly
american dj's . 1 of those dj's had to cancel a whole tour of 10 dates last
december as his mom was out of the blue , diagnosed with a terminal illness and
he just wanted to go home , understandably so . i immediately reached out to
promoters and asked the said dj to also publish a formal statement apologizing
to fans who had already purchased tickets for some of those shows . 100 % of
the promoters were very supportive . we managed to reschedule all of the shows .

i heard that 1 of the promoters involved in the TP situation went as far as the
airport and he was nowhere to be seen . they got an email that evening saying
he could not make it and they feel that they were not even afforded a valid
reason for the no show !

my biggest worry with this situation is that , this fallout will impact other
dj's - just because they happen to be american . when i started working with
dj's beginning of 2008 . i approached several known clubs in europe and as soon
as they realized that i was working with mainly american dj's some went as far
as to say that they simply are not comfortable with working with american dj's
because they come with problems . i.e. , not showing up for gigs and general
attitude problems .

i feel in the last few yrs we turned a corner

This is a mix I did for Dj International Radio, using records

Any excuse to do a Chicago House mix ;). These records make up the
spine of my collection, which has been built around the early years
86/87/88 from which so much good music was released. This mix is a
shade under 2 hours of 'Music that's good for your soul' to quote the
now sadly deceased Frankie knuckles. I've thrown in a few unavoidable
crackles and mixes that aren't synced to within an inch of their lives
make the mix a bit more organic than the usual offerings. To make
ilife even more difficult, as with all my mixes, there's never any
planning, I choose a first record and go from there, if I let a record
for its duration it's because it's either a brilliant record which
should be heard in it's entirety or I'm frantically searching for the
record I want to go with it (usually a combination of both. I hope you

Re: (313) Terrence Parker

2014-04-30 Thread kent williams
Starting in about 1998, the promotion crew I was involved in, Rotation
(Iowa City) brought Terrence Parker to play shows in Iowa City. We brought
him in at least 5 times. Since then, other Iowa City promoters brought him
4 or 5 more times. The last time he played here was IIRC 2012.

Throughout that period, TP was the gold standard of 'name' DJs coming
through -- he always showed up, he always drew enough of a crowd to more
than pay his guarantee and expenses. Furthermore, he was a sincere,
lovable guy, who would stand around for an hour in the rain after everyone
got booted out of the club to talk to fans.

He's always been a friend to me personally. To the extent that I am a
judge of character, I've always thought he was honest, sincere, and 100% on
the level. Throughout his career, he's tried a lot of different things to
try and make a living and not all of them are successful. He moved to Las
Vegas and worked as the music director of an evangelical church; he's tried
a lot of different record labels and ways of communicating.

To some extent you could say Terrence was almost corny -- the intros to his
Mix CDs with the Warner Brothers cartoon samples; calling himself DJ
Extraordinaire. But anyone who sees him play know that he's one of the
real people, a guy with a great ear for house music, great DJ skills, and
the ability to read a crowd and make them feel fantastic.

I have no idea what the deal is with his current difficulties. I know that
a lot has happened in his personal life -- he has declared bankruptcy, lost
his home, gotten divorced. That last has to have wounded him the worst --
he was NOT a player, and loved and respected his wife deeply, and I'm sure
still does.

I have not contributed to his DJ fund, primarily because after putting two
kids through college and one through graduate school, I'm broke as a joke.
I also do not think that he will raise the kind of money he's looking for.
But I have no doubt he is trying to dig himself out of a deep hole and
restore his reputation.

Whatever the reasons for his difficulties I believe in Terrence's talent,
character, and good will. I have no doubt this whole mess of the last two
years in his life have been devastating and deeply humiliating for him.
I'm not sure the IndieGoGo thing will work but I know why TP is trying it:
He really believes in the goodness of people, and is hoping his fans can
get him back into a better position so he can do what he's best at.

When someone is down, they find out who their friends are. The music
business is harsh, and real friends are rare. If you are a friend to TP,
it's important for you to let him know that, even if you can't help him out
financially.

I don't recommend changing to googlegroups. My office uses it
extensively for staff and external lists and we are finding intermittent

(who is the man behind hyperreal.org) on the subject.

The big problem is people with yahoo.com e-mail addresses. The way EZMLM
works is that it takes your e-mail and resends it to all the list members.
Any mail server implementing DMARC rejects e-mails where the FROM: address
is x...@yahoo.com, but it doesn't come from a yahoo mail server.

This has resulted in people getting bounce notices from hyperreal. It has
 happened to me, and I don't even have a yahoo.com e-mail address.

Bottom line is the hyperreal team is working on a solution, but this will
likely screw up 313 emails for the near term.

If you're an e-mail list wizard and can suggest a linux based mailing list
server that can circumvent this stupidity, please let me and
 (br...@hyperreal.org) know.

-

If you list is still active and hasn't been swept away by folks moving to
Facebook or whatever, you might have heard complaints from yahoo.comusers,
or possibly even folks who have started to see strange bounces where
yahoo.com senders are involved. This is due to a current hullabaloo about
an anti-spam tech called DMARC and Yahoo's recent and strict implementation
 of it.

 http://thehackernews.com/2014/04/yahoos-new-dmarc-policy-destroys-every.html

DMARC is a system designed to allow domain owners to specify policies and
rules regarding how to deal with email from senders using that domain. For
example, for an email with a From header like:

 From: Brian brianbehlend...@yahoo.com

Yahoo published a policy that says unless that email came from Yahoo's
servers, it should be rejected. This is a great anti-spam technique given
that lots of spammers use yahoo.com addresses fraudulently (I guess?). But
what it means for senders to mailing lists like those we host at Hyperreal,
when that mail goes through Hyp and comes back to Yahoo's servers, it
bounces. Not only that, but that Yahoo sender's mail bounces at Gmail and
other mail service providers who implement DMARC. Those bounces can cause
chaos, of course. Ezmlm/qmail will keep track of those bounces and at least
let subscribers know they're missing messages and why, and shouldn't unsub
those users automatically, but it still causes chaos.

More details on technically why this is wrong:

 http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/ietf/current/msg87153.html

Yahoo appears to not get why this is a big deal:

 http://yahoo.tumblr.com/post/82426971544/an-update-on-our-dmarc-policy-to-protect-
our-users

There is no good fix here. Changing the From: header to say something like

 From: Brian Behlendorf via sfra...@hyperreal.org

seems wacky, but it's what Threadable did, specifically for DMARC-checking
 recipients and DMARC-policy-publishing sender domains:

 http://blog.threadable.com/how-threadable-solved-the-dmarc-problem

Sadly, though, no open source mailing list manager has implemented this
well. Mailman seems to have implemented this partially, but no one's even
talking about this for ezmlm and I doubt it'll happen. I've not decided
whether to move the Hyperreal mailing lists to Mailman or something else,
but clearly we need to move off of ezmlm anyways. I was hoping to be able
to choose between a couple of them, but now that choice seems much more
narrow (and not necessarily the best - Sympa was looking promising too).

Anyways - I am sad that this is how things have played out, that I can't
provide a quick resolution to this. For now all I can suggest is asking
youryahoo.com users to switch to another domain if they want to participate.
But that sucks as an answer. If anyone has better ideas (or
programming/migration talent to contribute) let me know.

2014-04-26 Thread kent williams
OK, clarifications...

You will see bounces on e-mail services other than Yahoo. GMail
implements DMARC but it doesn't itself bounce emails that fail DMARC
tests. But when Yahoo servers get your e-mail, they will check the
DMARC and reject it, because the way EZMLM (and every other e-mail
list software) works is by re-writing the headers. You re-write the
headers you break the check-sum or some-such baloney.

And there's several negative votes on Google Groups. Fair enough.

At this point, it's probably best if we encourage Yahoo 313
subscribers to move to a GMail account, and sit tight while Brian
Behlendorf figures stuff out.

Yeah, Roland released an updated 808, if you could call it that. It also has the 909 sounds in there.Without the comparison to the 808, it seems like a decent stand alone drum machine for $400 or so dollars. Octave One have been using it from recent photos of their live setup.

If you list is still active and hasn't been swept away by folks moving to

 implementation of it.

 http://thehackernews.com/2014/04/yahoos-new-dmarc-policy-

DMARC is a system designed to allow domain owners to specify policies and
rules regarding how to deal with email from senders using that domain. For
example, for an email with a From header like:

 From: Brian brianbehlend...@yahoo.com

Yahoo published a policy that says unless that email came from Yahoo's
servers, it should be rejected. This is a great anti-spam technique given
that lots of spammers use yahoo.com addresses fraudulently (I guess?).
But what it means for senders to mailing lists like those we host at
Hyperreal, when that mail goes through Hyp and comes back to Yahoo's
servers, it bounces. Not only that, but that Yahoo sender's mail bounces
at Gmail and other mail service providers who implement DMARC. Those
bounces can cause chaos, of course. Ezmlm/qmail will keep track of those
bounces and at least let subscribers know they're missing messages and why,
and shouldn't unsub those users automatically, but it still causes chaos.

More details on technically why this is wrong:

 http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/ietf/current/msg87153.html

Yahoo appears to not get why this is a big deal:

 http://yahoo.tumblr.com/post/82426971544/an-update-on-our-

There is no good fix here. Changing the From: header to say something like

is x...@yahoo.com, but it doesn't come from a yahoo mail server.

This has resulted in people getting bounce notices from hyperreal. It
 has
  happened to me, and I don't even have a yahoo.com e-mail address.

Bottom line is the hyperreal team is working on a solution, but this
 will
likely screw up 313 emails for the near term.

If you're an e-mail list wizard and can suggest a linux based mailing
 list
server that can circumvent this stupidity, please let me and
  (br...@hyperreal.org) know.

 -

If you list is still active and hasn't been swept away by folks moving
 to
Facebook or whatever, you might have heard complaints from
 yahoo.comusers,
or possibly even folks who have started to see strange bounces where
yahoo.com senders are involved. This is due to a current hullabaloo
 about
an anti-spam tech called DMARC and Yahoo's recent and strict
 implementation
  of it.

 http://thehackernews.com/2014/04/yahoos-new-dmarc-policy-destroys-every.html

DMARC is a system designed to allow domain owners to specify policies
 and
rules regarding how to deal with email from senders using that domain.
 For
example, for an email with a From header like:

  From: Brian brianbehlend...@yahoo.com

Yahoo published a policy that says unless that email came from Yahoo's
servers, it should be rejected. This is a great anti-spam technique
 given
that lots of spammers use yahoo.com addresses fraudulently (I
 guess?). But
what it means for senders to mailing lists like those we host at
 Hyperreal,
when that mail goes through Hyp and comes back to Yahoo's servers, it
bounces. Not only that, but that Yahoo sender's mail bounces at Gmail
 and
other mail service providers who implement DMARC. Those bounces can
 cause
chaos, of course. Ezmlm/qmail will keep track of those bounces and at
 least
let subscribers know they're missing messages and why, and shouldn't
 unsub
those users automatically, but it still causes chaos.

More details on technically why this is wrong:

  http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/ietf/current/msg87153.html

Yahoo appears to not get why this is a big deal:

 http://yahoo.tumblr.com/post/82426971544/an-update-on-our-dmarc-policy-to-protect-our-users

There is no good fix here. Changing the From: header to say something
 like

  From: Brian Behlendorf via sfra...@hyperreal.org

seems wacky, but it's what Threadable did, specifically for
 DMARC-checking
  recipients and DMARC-policy-publishing sender domains:

  http://blog.threadable.com/how-threadable-solved-the-dmarc-problem

Sadly, though, no open source mailing list manager has implemented this
well. Mailman seems to have implemented this partially, but no one's
 even
talking about this for ezmlm and I doubt it'll happen. I've not
 decided
whether to move the Hyperreal mailing lists to Mailman or something
 else,
but clearly we need to move off of ezmlm anyways. I was hoping to be
 able
to choose between a couple of them, but now that choice seems much more
narrow (and not necessarily the best - Sympa was looking promising
 too).

Anyways - I am sad that this is how things have played out, that I
 can't
provide a quick resolution to this. For now all I can suggest is
 asking
youryahoo.com users to switch to another domain if they want to
 participate.
But that sucks as an answer. If anyone has better ideas (or
  programming
