2002-05-02 Thread Cyclone Wehner
I was thinking... Detroit could capitalise on that Eminem song if they
wanted to. Someone should do a techno answer record calling the shots on
that Moby diss, which turns into a techno diss by default, clarifying that
stuff, just knock it out, put it on the Internet, circulate some vinyls. A
simple techno/electro record, catchy, with a rhyme. It would create a buzz
and everybody would say, 'Hey, what's this underground techno thing?'
Also people should send some CDs to Vibe, The Source, etc with a sticker
"Detroit techno - too cool, too underground, for that muthaf*cker Eminem" or
buy some pillows from the mall, some black silk pillow slips for them, tie a
lovely CD like, say Stacey's Tomorrow, Derrick's Innovator, whatever, with a
black ribbon and a red rose or something and attach a note, "If y'all gonna
sleep on Detroit techno, do it in style." Bombard them with that stuff so
they cannot ignore it. I think Mike Banks was onto something with the way he
handled the Jaguar affair, basically creating all this press by subverting
the media machine... You could take that further. I'm not sure it would
work, but, there's some potential...

He's expressing his disagreement regarding previous comments about why
Richie Hawtin is so successful!
Personally I think it's because he's White (JOKE!)

Re: [313] demf website

2002-04-30 Thread Fred Heutte
Remember this about Urb: it reflects to a large and admirable degree
the market it is in. As of the 2000 census, there are 10 million people
in Los Angeles:

   31% Caucasian non-Latino
   10% African-American
   12% Asian-American
45% Latino (white and other races)

Raymond Roker, the publisher of Urb, may have his limitations, but he
saw the future in LA and successfully developed Urb in that direction.
Thus it has become musically and culturally a far broader magazine than
almost anything else out there.

What magazine in Detroit can say the same? I give some credit to
Metro Times, but even they fall short in my humble outsider view.
(so did my old long-forgotten paper, the Unicorn Times in DC, but let's
not bring up *archeology* shall we!) What real coverage does MT really
give to the Arab-American community not to mention other groups and
areas outside central Detroit (it is "Metro" Times after all!).
But I used to work for a paper like that so I know what kind of monetary
limits they are dealing with. All the same, vision is reflected in what
you put in print...

Of course, along those lines, to be sure, Raymond does have a weakness for
putting the Chemicals, Armand, Wink, etc. etc. on the covers. I see him
as sort of the Jann Wenner of the 1990s in some ways (of course, Rolling
Stone ain't what it used to be, and neither is Urb). You should *see*
Rolling Stone from circa 1969-70. A real mindblower of a magazine. As
was Urb in the early 1990s.

RE: [313] demf website

2002-04-30 Thread Mike Taylor

It also helps that he is one of the hardest workers in Detroit.

From my dealings with the people who have "made it" or whatever you want to
call it, the thing that separates all of them is that they work very hard.
Talent will only take you so far, it all comes down to how hard you work at
it.

There are a lot of people who want to sit around, smoke dope, not return
phone calls and not work in the studio who think race is the reason they are
not blowing up. I do not care what color your skin is, your work ethic
determines where you end up. Hawtin sells more records than me for a reason,
he workers harder and smarter than I do.

Where Kharris is coming from, and where I agree with her, it that his image
is much easier to market than say Juan Atkins. It is much easier for an A&R
or marketing exec to comprehend you and your weird science fiction music
when you are a skinny white dude who wears funny glasses and jump suits. The
larger music industry, in which Hawtin has an advantage, cannot comprehend
and sell an image of a middle aged black dude from Detroit making weird
electronic music from outer space. The only thing black they know how to
sell is rap music and sex jams, period.

This is where race comes into it. Because of Hawtin's skin color, he can
play on stereotypes that black artists do not have access to. In the small
indie-dance scene, I do not think color is as big of an issue. In the larger
industry, where real money is made and where culture at large is
manufactured, black artists who do not play off of black stereotypes do not
get signed. Any good Detroit Techno artist is at odds with those racial
stereotypes in the US music industry, and therefore cannot get ahead. Black
people don't make sci-fi music, they make songs about sex, greed, and
violence(unless they are conscious brothers, and then they make typical
conscious brother music...)

All of that being said, I think that if a lot of the black dudes who cry
race worked as hard and were as talented as Hawtin, they would be selling a
hell of a lot more records. The glass ceiling is definitely there, but most
dudes will never hit it because they do not have what it takes to get that
far. Juan is a perfect example of somebody who has hit that ceiling. Jeff
Mills has hit that ceiling. To avoid that ceiling Carl Craig is referencing
jazz and R&B. Race had nothing to do with why some people have not gotten as
far Mr. Mills, Mr. Craig, or Mr. Atkins. I do not care what color you are,
if you have talent and tenacity, you will get ahead in this business.

Take care,

Actually-

from issues 25-90, Urb featured minority artist (mostly black) on 33 out
of 65 covers. That's over 50%

you can see them at www.urb.com /click: back issues

ironically, according the the US census burea, 75% of the population is
white.

and richie's only been on the cover once.

> how do *you* know the reason why he is popular is because he's white?

No, he´s not popular, because of that -

Mr Hawtin deserves some respect for his work, for sure

But others do deserve the same respect -

so we should take care that no one is KING of

the tendency to lift Richie so high are in danger to create a king

and if there´s a 5 to 6 difference on that page - that´s strange

Why I think this way ?

As I also work in the music-world I used to meet quite a few journalists

ad musicians warning me in general like: "black people are difficult" -

some were warning me that for example 4 hero are difficult,

some people were saying theo parrish is difficult -

meeting them in person resulted in some of the best talks

I ever did have - learnt much, chatted much, laughed much, -

But if this phenomenan "watch out - difficult" is also around in the US

and I think it is, it does have a effect how black intelectual techno

artists get placed the media -

and this is just a little example of the media-game -

Let´s say there´s this URB-magazine or so, maybe they sell better with

a black artist on the cover, maybe with a white artist, maybe better

with male or a female artist ?

but if it does make a difference to their business, what do you think

they will do ? -yes, they will take care that the better selling race/gender

is selected - all those aspects (many many more) work on the popularity

of artists -

this is why *we* prefer to focus this

because there is so much of this stuff working undercover

I won´t deny that focusing can also bring problems -

but this is the next level - we ain´t there by now

out

Actual Facts? don't have too many.

But the whole plastikman concept, the way richie markets his cd's and his
persona, and the style that he plays, is just flat out more marketable than
the way CC or D may or any of them. Richie markets a style that goes along
with his music, that goes beyond just the music. And that style simply is
more accepted than the styles of other artists.

Re: [313] demf website

2002-04-29 Thread Jayson B.

Yes, Richie Hatwin is a serious good artist,

but why is he the "far more popular" one ?

because he's far more accessable, along with his music. because his
ability to market himself and his music FAR surpases anyone else in detroit.
That point in itself is extremely difficult to dispute.

because he´s "the best" ?

do you believe in "the best" ?

well, yeah, i kinda do ;-)

is it possible he´s "far more popular",

because he also is on so many photos, jpgs, maybe ?

possible? yeah. and monkey's might fly out of my butt.

so again we need to enter the question:

why is he on so many photos ?

we don't really need to ask it again, because i still don't think its the
reason for his popularity (and i also don't think its because he's a white
boy). Getting pictures in magazines a superb dj/producer does not make.

oh- i COMPLETELY agree that there should be other artists photos on the

i found it thoroughly pathetic that PCM used photos of artist who have
publicly dismissed them (Hawtin and May)

but i sensed this thread going into another black/white debate, which i
don't think anyone is in the mood for right now.

so i felt it pertinent to present other reasons why Hawtin is Hawtin :)

Re: [313] demf website

2002-04-29 Thread Michael . Elliot-Knight

Yeah, why didn't PCM just ask for some promotional photos of some of the
artists slated to play this year? They or their respective booking agencies
should have some photos of them in action. What more, wouldn't Richie have
a case against PCM for using his image when he doesn't endorse them or this
year's DEMF?

1. Richie Hawtin is more popular because he's a marketing genius.

2. The Plastikman logo is an icon. Just like Coca-Cola logo.

3. He ran an extremely successful recordlabel (+8) that didn't limit
itself to strictly Detroit, therefore it had more sucess outside of Detroit.

4. Spaztik is perhaps the most versitile track of all-time. It works with
house, techno, booty... Everyone plays it, everyone loves it.

5. Even today, Rich aligns himself with exciting new technologies that are
not only cutting edge, but great for filling column inches in magazines.

6. Plus, he is definately in the top 10 DJ/producers in the world when it
comes to quality records and amazing sets.

But since quality in music is more or les subjective and I have no desire
to argue with anyone who believes that Richie is not a good artist, please

Yes, Richie Hatwin is a serious good artist,

but why is he the "far more popular" one ?

because he´s "the best" ?

do you believe in "the best" ?

is it possible he´s "far more popular",

because he also is on so many photos, jpgs, maybe ?

so again we need to enter the question:

why is he on so many photos ?

beyond whitewashing, hawtin was the first artist to publicly chastise PCM
after carl craig's firing.

yet they continue to trade on his image.

talk about a lack of self-respect on PCM's part.

I don't think there's a conspiracy amid the JPEGs. ;)

The correct URL for the fOCUS://DEMF site is indeed:

The site has been down the last few days, and we're currently working on
bringing it back up.

I can't seem to get through to the DEMF site itself, both demf.net and
demf.org appear to be down. There were a bunch of articles (some with
photos) written, here's what the Freep wrote:
http://www.freep.com/entertainment/music/efest30_2530.htm

Sonicnet.com wrote 8 articles of which I don't have the direct URLs, but
if you search for 'detroit' in their music archives section, they'll
show up.

And there's of course the TechnoTourist report :)

I'm working on it, I'll post something to the list in a few weeks for
comments.
Hmmm, the TechnoTourist Guide to Detroit? Lonely Planet watch out! :)

> (i know some Adelaide (South Australia) people are interested

Yep, quite a few 313-members that I met on my holiday there were
seriously thinking about it and let's face it: after last year, how can
you afford to miss next year's edition? Might be a nice competition to
see if there will be more Ozzies or Dutchies :)

Anyway, this gives me an opportunity to give big thanks to the 313.au
massive for going out of their way to provide hospitality, parties
(great house scene in Perth!), radio show appearances or simply
all-around friendliness: Askew, Cyclone, 3jane, tan, Jason M., Scott
Nexus, Benn, Patrick HAF, james bond, Emma, Chris, Bo, Tim, Kate,
Nicole, A_Zed, [EMAIL PROTECTED], Jason B. (all three of them), Dave Clark,
Josh Dissonance and my apologies to those I forgot, it's not on purpose.

Cheers,

Otto
