Re: (313) Shake in Holland, in Liverpool too

2003-04-15 Thread s mcgill
I know I am bit slow in replying but Shake played a blinder the day before
that in Liverpool too on Friday 11th April.
He was an ultimate star when he came, very special atmosphere in the place
as usual for T-funkshun's 2nd Birthday.
It was a special night all over as Jonny McIntosh turned in a great set
before Shake, starting with What's Going On by Marvin Gaye. The style of
these two was most suited.

I remember Shake dropping everything from Radiohead - Idoteque, Smith Hack
album, Feadz - Funksplitter, Krikor on Katapult, Clash - Radioclash (this
was odd as we had been enthusing about the Clash when we picked him up.),
and also that electronic funk tune that's name has temporarily left me. The
vocal actually says something like I sing the funk electric, I sing the
funk electric, Out of space out of time, blah blah blah blah blah blah, on
a journey! I think it is called Electric something.

Anyway, Shake, wherever you are, I hope you are smiling after your travels.
Sounds like you did damage everywhere you came.

Much love.
Scott

Rhythm, from Akufen to Radiohead's Kid A. Brilliant set, one of my best

Hey,
This tune Elektrik Funk 'On a Journey' is a great record! I'm happy to see
it mentioned on the list, it's pretty advanced for whenever it was, 81 or
82. The instrumental is the one for me

Thanks,

He played here in Paris, thursday 10th. He did a mix close to this lineup

everything goes so fine! Its not just a big melting pot which has no sense,
he knows to turn it to a real mix. That was so fresh! Ill keep a very good

And id like to thanx Serge Célina of *PaRaDiSe MaSSaGe* who promote this

Haha... that reminds me...

I once saw on TMF (wich is a belgian music TV station - they also have this
in Holland) a report on some local party. And they interviewed a local dj
who was raving about the fact that he first played some house and later on
more techno styled music. And he was like: Wow... this is such an open
minded audience tonight, I don´t believe it! I first started of with some
house, and now with some tech funk... and they keep on dancing...

That gives you a view on the diversity we get here with local parties
What a loser... felt like kicking him in the arse. HA!

I also was at Shake's set in Holland last saturday and enjoyed it very

it's coming! coming thru EFA later this year. i heard most of it while
sitting in the car with him at the airport in dallasit's realy
excellent...shake is one of the true pioneers of using samples as
instruments imo, one of my first reactions after hearing it...there were
many incredibly beautiful hiphop (with a bit of the shake touch! a little
bit idm like he does..) tracks on there (def some of the best yet from
him!), techno, some very nice melodies...wild sounds...i even liked the
frictional beat style one that minto didnt :P but minto didnt hear much of
the rest...nyah nyah toe :P ...let's just hope EFA dont drop the ball..

Yes, I didn't mean to big up London as if it was unique in having
eclectic DJs. I was just speaking from my very limited experiences.
It just seems a pity that these kind of DJs don't seem to become name DJs -
the big DJs that do genre-mixing or whatever the hell you want to call it
usually make a name for themselves as specialist DJs and then branch out when
they can rely on their name only to fill a club, or, rarely, like FK, they have
a regular club where they slowly but surely build up a following until it
becomes international rather than just local.

What about Traxx? I heard him go from onside to another. He plays from
wave, to pop, to electro to disco...

PG Good point, how could i forget. I have a new mix of his on cdr

'Contemplating Rythms Part 2 which has funk+soul, lots of old african
 inspired music, jazzy stuff.

He played a 4 hour set here when DJ Hell came through (each of them played 4
hours, actually) and Traxx was all over the palce indeed.. he'll even drop some
chicago industrial classics..., italo, classic detroit, proto-312 Jack Trax. He
gets mad indeed, it's a wonder he can hold onto his records with all the sweat
pouring off him. He definitely WORKS when he's on the decks, in every way:
selection, EQ, doubles, long mixes, drop-ins... fun to dance to, if
exhausting, ha ha

peace,
Matt MacQueen

I'll also 2nd the London local heroes mention. But there are local heroes
everywhere that tear it up and don't get enough credit. Thank goodness
they
exist, or some cities would flounder with zero good music.

Yes, I didn't mean to big up London as if it was unique in having
eclectic DJs. I was just speaking from my very limited experiences.
It just seems a pity that these kind of DJs don't seem to become name
DJs - the big DJs that do genre-mixing or whatever the hell you want to call
it usually make a name for themselves as specialist DJs and then branch out
when they can rely on their name only to fill a club, or, rarely, like FK,
they have a regular club where they slowly but surely build up a following
until it becomes international rather than just local.

I think it's more that there are very few DJs that get national or
international noteriety w/o record releases to back up their DJ skill. It's
been this way for a long time, and probably will continue to be, since
records get your name to the people and promoters that much easier - they
also generate hype and expectation. I'm not gonna try and grind this axe too
hard though, b/c I've probably beat this horse a bit too severely already.

 proto-312 Jack Trax

Damn that's a good name for it! He played stuff like that all night at
Portal in August. It was insane!

Word Traxx played a VERY eclectic set at Cafe Deville here in NYC a couple
of weeks back...

He started with the new Ugly Edits and some disco then progressed into EBM,
Industrial, jackin' Trax stuff and even a Prince tune...good stuff all of
it:)

Tenaglia is another DJ that can really mix it up...I've heard him play Hard
House, Trance, classic House, 313 stuff, Electro, Hard Techno, Disco,
Black Sheep, Missy Elliott AND Pink Floyd all in the same set.

I like a DJ that takes the crowd on a journey...
