Re: [AI] I need an accessible Indian Map
Dear Ekinath Let me first make a disclaimer, that the solution does not meet your requirements. However, there are 2 interesting things you can do to get some understanding of how major towns / cities are placed. 1 If you take any world clocks, they put major towns / cities in a longitude group. Those towns shall have the same time. With the time off set you can again get an idea the distance in relation to GMT, i.e. greenwitch at UK. 2. If you use maps.google.com and give 2 places, it will give you driving direction, here you can get to know of places and distances enroot. [AI] Delhi High Court: Allow scribes with science background for blind candidates in IIT-JEE exam
New Delhi, Fri Apr 05 2013 Providing relief to a visually challenged student scheduled to take the IIT-JEE exam this year, the Delhi High Court has directed the IIT-JEE examination control body to follow the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and allow him to take the exam with the help of a writer who has studied science at least up to class XI. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/allow-scribes-with-science-background-for-blind-candidates-in-iitjee-exam-he-tells-exam-body/1097927/0 The directions of Justice G S Sistani came on a writ petition filed by visually challenged student Kartik Sawhney. He alleged that the present rules governing the IT-JEEP exam were in violation of the guidelines issued by the Department of Disability Affairs, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in February, and created several barriers for disabled candidates. Sawhney, who has passed his Class XII examination, is scheduled to take the IT-JEEP exam on April 7. The guidelines issued by the ministry on February 26 under the Persons with Disability (equal opportunities, Protection of Rights and full participation) Act state that a visually challenged person should have the discretion of opting for his own scribe/reader/ lab assistant or request the examination body for the same... In such instances the candidates should be allowed to meet the scribe a day before the examination so that the candidate gets a chance to check and verify whether the scribe is suitable or not. The guidelines also state that alternative questions should be provided for visually and hearing impaired persons in place of those questions which require a visual or descriptive input. The present rules, however, mandate that a person from commerce or humanities background is provided as scribe by the Central Superintendent of Examinations for the IT-JEEP exam. It is the duty and responsibility of the state to create a barrier-free environment for persons with disabilities, the court said. The Centre and the IT-JEEP body in their reply to the petition had informed the court that the examination body could not have incorporated the guidelines passed by the Social Justice Ministry into the rules for this year's examination since the guidelines were passed on February 26. By then, the exam paper and the rules had already been set. The counsel of IT-JEEP Amit Bansal told the court that the reason for not allowing a scribe with a science background was to avoid unfair advantage or cheating by a candidate. Prima facie, there is force in the submission made by the petitioner and his counsel that the blind candidate should be provided with scribe/reader/lab assistant for written examinations with science background as a person of commerce and humanities background will either not be able to identify, read out the question properly or explain the visual inputs to blind candidates, Justice Sistani said. The court then passed interim directions to allow Sawhney to use a scribe who has studied science up to class XI and to meet the scribe one hour before the exam. The court will hear the matter again on April 17. -- Avinash Shahi MPhil Research Scholar Centre for the Study of Law and Governance Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi India Register at the dedicated AccessIndia list for discussing accessibility of mobile phones / Tabs on: http://mail.accessindia.org.in/mailman/listinfo/mobile.accessindia_accessindia.org.in Search for old postings at: http://www.mail-archive.com/accessindia@accessindia.org.in/ To unsubscribe send a message to accessindia-requ...@accessindia.org.in with the subject unsubscribe. Re: [AI] Delhi High Court: Allow scribes with science background for blind candidates in IIT-JEE exam
good relief but I am in the favour that the court should decide upon the future of these guidelines passed by ministry. Since these guidelines have been passed none of the recruiting agencies who published their advertisements after such date have encorporated into their guidelines, few examples are: UPSC, U.P public service commission, LIC recruitment and there may be many more! On 4/5/13, avinash shahi shahi88avin...@gmail.com wrote: New Delhi, Fri Apr 05 2013 Providing relief to a visually challenged student scheduled to take the IIT-JEE exam this year, the Delhi High Court has directed the IIT-JEE examination control body to follow the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and allow him to take the exam with the help of a writer who has studied science at least up to class XI. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/allow-scribes-with-science-background-for-blind-candidates-in-iitjee-exam-he-tells-exam-body/1097927/0 The directions of Justice G S Sistani came on a writ petition filed by visually challenged student Kartik Sawhney. In my view it is easy to score in few languages but for us it is very difficult decision to opt any one language because our best friend Jaws will be helpless in teaching us that language. say for e.g. I have always thought to opt Urdu as one of my optional but I think i will have to dependent upon the recorded notes, but unfortunately i don't have any closeness with the way of learning by recorded notes. Re: [AI] Delhi High Court: Allow scribes with science background for blind candidates in IIT-JEE exam
Hi, Unfortunately, this judgement does not bring any relief. Consider the following: 1. CBSE in its letter to the centre superintendent has requested him to provide a student of at least class XI studying Sciences as per the judgement. Now, if a student currently in class XI (who has just been promoted to class XI on April1) is provided as a reader, he will not be able to read out the questions to me. What I wanted was a student of class XII (who has passed class XI in Science) to ensure that he knows at least some of the symbols and notations on the test. 2. According to the CBSE and IIT, the scribe/reader cannot help me with rough work, and cannot do scratch work/intermediate work for me. Further, no assistive tools that I use for calculations etc. can be permitted in the examination centre. This means that the organisations expect me to compute 16545×15241 mentally. I don't understand how they want me to do so. They want me to solve a numerical involving ionic equilibrium in physical Chemistry, and keep track of all the intermediate steps. This is next to impossible. 3. Nothing has been done about the questions involving figures/diagrams. I gave three options to address this: a. Provide alternate questions in lieu of visuals b. Provide verbal discription of the figures/diagrams involved c. Provide exemption from the questions involving figures/diagrams None have been agreed to unfortunately. Regards, On 4/5/13, Mohib Anwar Rafel mohibra...@gmail.com wrote: good relief but I am in the favour that the court should decide upon the future of these guidelines passed by ministry. The court then passed interim directions to allow Sawhney to use a scribe

Re: [AI] Delhi High Court: Allow scribes with science background for blind candidates in IIT-JEE exam
Kartik, all the best for your fight. Its not just a case of one individual, there are larger questions of systemic significance. A greater struggle is the need of the hour. The legal minds involved could perhaps provide more ideas asto how to go ahead. Best, On 4/5/13, Kartik Sawhney sawhney.kar...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, Unfortunately, this judgement does not bring any relief. Prima facie, there is force in the submission made by the petitioner and his counsel that the blind candidate should be provided with

[AI] Regarding Robo Help and Frame Maker
Hai, As far as my knowledge is concerned, both Robo Help and Frame Maker are adobe products used for designing and the creation of images in a document. My answers to your questions are as follows: 1.How far the above mentioned tools are relevant for technical writing especially for getting a job in an I T company. Answer: They are very much relevant in technical writing where they are used for creating and inserting images into a document such as a product guide, user manual and so on. 2.Where can one learn these tools? Are there any popular institutions teaching them? Answer: Any institution offering courses in technical writing would teach them as part of their curriculum. 3.Can a VIP from the point of accessability learn them? Answer: Learning the tools mentioned above is certainly challenging for a vision impaired person as they are not supported by Jaws and that they deal with the creation of images. Hence, it is difficult to make a career in the field of technical writing even if you have very good writing skills. However, freelancing could be considered as one option if one could write technical content without having to use these tools. Hi Frankly i don't know about who manufactures this puzzle in accessible format. But i have an idea which might be useful to you. as per my knowledge this puzzle consists of a cube that is of 6 surfaces and each surface is divided into 9 squares of different colours in square shape that is every surface has 3 square as width and 3 square as length. I feel you can make use of bindis which are used by females. they have gum or glue behind so you can stick them on the small surface. and they have different shapes so use one shape to identify one colour for e.g. if you assigned circle shaped bindi to yellow colour all yellow squares will carry circle shaped bindi. and if you associate blue with oval shaped bindi then all blue squares will be fixed with oval shaped bindi. in this way, if you have bindis of 6 different shapes with good and lasting glue then once you ask any one sighted to stick bindis in such way, you are good to identify the blocks and can arrange in your by feeling the shapes of bindis. Re: [AI] Some doubts regarding braille
Hi Ajay, As our friends in the groups advise, learning new skill will always put you better than the others. Coming to ppt, for making ppt I use jaws and can create fairly reasonable ppts using ppt templates. However, makigng complex ppt is certainly a challenge... If you are looking at using ppt as an enabler for your talk / presentation, if you plan and practise your ppt you can still manage it.You can also use a bluetooth earplug which can give you a wire free experience in Jaws. You can also save notes on your phone which is attached to ears through earplugs. On 4/4/13, Ekinath Khedekar ekin...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Ajay, Braille certainly becomes handy during ppts as you don’t have to hear and then speak. Also you are utilizing one more of your senses; touch. Listening and then speaking breaks the rhythm of the presentation. Learning Braille is not a big deal, but it takes time to use it speedily. Also it’s bulky, but great tool when you don’t want to be loaded with gadget all over your body. It gives me free mind and I speak better that way. Do learn it. Learning is never a waste. And yah, congratulations for your short listings. Good luck On 4/4/13, Pranav Lal pranav@gmail.com wrote: Hi Ajay, I cannot comment on the Nokia E5. Re: [AI] ALTERNATE OF MS DOS BATCH FILE IN WINDOWS
at Bhavani shankar, as per my knowledge, there is no windows GUI alternative to batch files. in order to hide your commands in the prompt window, you can use @echo off command. to hide commands from the batch file itself, you can convert it into .COM file. there is a small utility called battocom which converts batch files into com files where the human readers cannot understand the commands. google for it and you may get it. at Yogesh, as a brief answer to your questions, MS DOS batch file is a collection of MS DOS commands in a single text file which has .BAT extension. if you need a set of commands frequently, instead of typing them everytime in the command prompt window, you can save them in bat files. when you click on it or open the file, the commands are run sequentially. hope it clarifies your doubt. if something remaining, please feel free to ask.
