Re: [AFMUG] OT HR question

2020-12-07 Thread Ken Hohhof
I was born in 1950. My dad came home from WWII, went to college on the GI
Bill, got married and had 2 kids. I am the canonical baby boomer.

When I was in college around 1970, I didn’t know any hippies, but I can tell
you the Vietnam War was not very popular with those of us in the draft pool.
And while I don’t remember going to any antiwar protests, the Kent State
shootings made an impression.

It is funny my kids assume there was no sex, drugs or rock and roll back then.
Have they never watched an Austin Powers movie? Or Cheech and Chong?

I did know one kid in college, his dad owned an engineering company and
promised to sign it over to the kid the day he graduated with an engineering
degree. It took him 5 years, but he got the degree, and the dad kept his word.
The kid immediately sold the company and went to Canada to avoid the draft.
The other thing I remember was he drove a Shelby AC Cobra. Not a Shelby
Mustang, an actual AC Cobra.

Yeah those damn lazy millennial kids are all about to hit 40.

IMO, the boomer generation being anti-war hippies was simply a matter of optics
because those are the people who were making the news. Overall it's a
conservative age group. A slight majority of boomers voted for Richard Nixon.

screwed over by the baby boomers. Not sure where this comes from, but it seems
to be accepted fact among Bernie supporters. Like I have student debt and a

Re: [AFMUG] [ External ] Re: cnmaestro X

2020-12-07 Thread Steve Jones
Id like to know the pricing on long term data and multi tenant. I was
reading the manual on multitenant and so excited then went to do it and was
like damn, kick me in the balls. we are cloud

I cant get SAS to set up right now, but if you do CBRS its more than config
pushes (also not free)

Does on prem let you do long term data?

CnMaestro is like Linkplanner, the product is too good to be completely
free, there has to be some revenue for support and new feature engagement.
Its along the lines of when Unimus was way to cheap to be sustainable

Re: [AFMUG] Capstan Winch

2020-12-07 Thread Ken Hohhof
Instruction manual for that capstan hoist says just stop pulling on fall line
and let the rope slip on the capstan. It actually says to let the load start
dropping and then press the foot pedal to run the motor for smoother operation
even though the motor is running in the opposite direction. I don’t recall
that we’ve ever done that.

If you’re not actually bringing down any loads just the rope, maybe unhook it
from the capstan and “snap” the rope.

I think it has been this way in the manual labor field for a long
time. I know in the 90's/early 2000's when we were building a lot
of cell towers for different companies, the Monday-Tuesday after
payday was always light on the construction crews/tower climbers.
When I asked a foreman where people were, he told me Friday was
payday. It was mostly the young, single guys, but it was pretty
much understood that there would be less done early in the week
after a Friday payday. My first thought was to fire anyone who
didn't show up, but he told me that we'd be hard pressed to find
enough guys if we started firing everyone who didn't show up after
payday. It would be nice if everyone had a great work ethic, but
then again, it makes people who do look that much better.

Re: [AFMUG] cnmaestro X

2020-12-07 Thread Matt Hoppes
So does this mean the current cnMaestro will be EOL?

I can’t find a list of pay vs free features for X.

Re: [AFMUG] [ External ] cnmaestro X

2020-12-07 Thread John Seaman via AF
Sam, A lot of the “X” features don’t really apply to fixed wireless/PMP/etc.
They are more related to enterprise Wi-Fi/MSP. The basic version will
continue to be free, even for your large sub count. If you notice in your
current cnMaestro account there are certain features labeled as Pro. Those
features will require subscription to X.The ones most likely to be missed
are audit logs and reports. The free version continues to support onboarding,
monitoring, configuring, notifications/alarms, sw updates, performance KPIs,
etc.

Now that Cambium has me for +2000 subs on cnmaestro, what am I going to lose if
I don't go to X?

What do we gain if we do migrate and how much a month/per sub?

hank you for being a part of the cnMaestro beta program and your feedback on
the Pro features. Cambium Networks is proud to announce the release of
cnMaestro X this month, including the Pro features you are using today.

Starting January 4th, you will have the option to turn on cnMaestro X for a
90-day trial. On April 5th, your account will downgrade to the free version of
cnMaestro if you do not wish to upgrade to cnMaestro X.

Re: [AFMUG] cnmaestro X

2020-12-07 Thread Steve D
Near as I can tell, for us, it's going to be something we only use for
pushing mass-config changes and firmware. I might even pull back support
access if we really do lose audit logs.

I'll miss the reports it generated. (At least, whenever our on-prem
version is deemed at the point we *have* to upgrade it...)

Since we always kind of knew it might happen (hoped not) we never put all
our eggs into the basket, so to speak. I think it'll still be a useful
tool, just less so going forward.

It's my understanding that this is the same as cnMaestro 2.x. It's free but
you can enable some features for additional costs.

Like why reward laziness/hangovers. But if they are really sick, stay home and
recuperate.

Had 4 like that this morning. One is recovering from gall bladder surgery last
week, so it is understandable.

Not sure about the rest. Monday absenteeism after a payday smacks of drug
usage in my opinion.

You could add a reversing switch to the motor itself. A small box with a
toggle switch. Does it have brushes? If so just a reversing switch on either
the field or armature will do the trick. 4 wires.

Depending on the type of motor, it can be pretty easy. Have to bring some
wires out of it and put them on a reversing switch.

I guess wrap the rope around it in the opposite direction?

It uses an AC motor. Getting one to reverse means swapping fields. Not
impossible, but kind of a hassle. I bet it would void any warranty.

Re: [AFMUG] [WISPA Members] SpaceX gets $886 million from FCC to subsidize Starlink in 35 states

2020-12-07 Thread Matt Hoppes
I get that, but in these cases where I’m looking the location is serviced by
internal fiber such as a university or the power companies own connectivity and
so that’s why nobody else reports service there but yet somebody’s getting
money to cover it with wireless.

Bigger than that though we now have three competing funds all servicing the
same areas.

We have RDOF, CARES, and ACT power grants. We literally have three networks
being built by three different companies over the same area

So we just looked into this and SpaceX is doing a power grab. They literally
have little dots around the area up and sometimes big areas that don’t have
people in them.

It appears they have applied for funding to service the electric substation’s
and athletic fields and other places where no one lives and that’s why there’s

Sounds like Canada's Xplornet in size and constant acquisitions; don't know

[AFMUG] Capstan Winch

2020-12-07 Thread Matt Hopkins
I just bought a new winch (
https://www.gmesupply.com/ab-chance-3000-lb-capacity-capstan-hoist) for
tower work but to my surprise it does not have reverse, and it's painfully
slow. Our old My-Te had reverse, (
https://myte.com/winch-hoist-models/product/300AB/?categories=3) I just
thought it was a standard thing. It is really handy for lowering loads and
getting them in just the right position. Our My-Te winch is 15 years old
and has certainly paid for itself but it is due to be replaced. I would
just get another My-Te but I would like a smidge more load capacity. What
winch do you use? Any recommendations?

Right now all the spaceX running connections are single bounce with not
a lot of crossfield/downfield capability. i.e. there needs to be a

Did many WISPs compete for it? I would've thought it'd be fiber providers
but I guess that their pricing for the heavily-rural areas was too high.

I think it has been this way in the manual labor field for a long time. I know
in the 90's/early 2000's when we were building a lot of cell towers for
different companies, the Monday-Tuesday after payday was always light on the
construction crews/tower climbers. When I asked a foreman where people were, he
told me Friday was payday. It was mostly the young, single guys, but it was
pretty much understood that there would be less done early in the week after a
Friday payday. My first thought was to fire anyone who didn't show up, but he
told me that we'd be hard pressed to find enough guys if we started firing
everyone who didn't show up after payday. It would be nice if everyone had a
great work ethic, but then again, it makes people who do look that much better.

Re: [AFMUG] OT HR question

2020-12-07 Thread Cameron Crum
I think it has been this way in the manual labor field for a long time. I
know in the 90's/early 2000's when we were building a lot of cell towers
for different companies, the Monday-Tuesday after payday was always light
on the construction crews/tower climbers. When I asked a foreman where
people were, he told me Friday was payday. It was mostly the young, single
guys, but it was pretty much understood that there would be less done early
in the week after a Friday payday. My first thought was to fire anyone who
didn't show up, but he told me that we'd be hard pressed to find enough
guys if we started firing everyone who didn't show up after payday. It
would be nice if everyone had a great work ethic, but then again, it makes
people who do look that much better.

I'm not sure how long it lasts. I know that in the heat of
summer, a lot would leak out, but I think there was still some
residual there to provide protection. I know that if I had to open
something up in the winter (when 95% of our rain happens), I would
always squirt some in. Newer devices with better weather
  protection have always faired better.

2020-12-07 Thread Ken Hohhof
The modular jacks in many NIDs and outdoor smartjack enclosures often have a
grease but they will tell you it’s a “lubricant” to prevent “fretting
corrosion” of the gold contacts due to vibration.

And OK, it keeps moisture out.

The grease isn't there to conduct - it's pushed out of the way from the
contacts - it's there to block the port from other materials getting in.

Not sure about the rest. Monday absenteeism after a payday smacks of drug
usage in my opinion.

Re: [AFMUG] OT good eats

2020-12-07 Thread Darren Shea
I did eat that 1 year frozen piece of cake with my 1st wife – back in 1988. It
was not the worst piece of cake I ever tasted, but it also wasn’t a fruitcake!

I could be mistaken, we’re talking 1972, but I seem to remember my wife
choosing a “traditional wedding fruitcake” for our wedding reception, and
ordering one special from a bakery. I also distinctly remember her saying we
should freeze a piece and eat it on our first anniversary.

Young people, let me clue you in on a secret - those are both pranks that the
older generation may try to pull on you. Don’t fall for them. Especially the
one year old piece of cake. Save it and take it out if you wish, but don’t try
to eat it.

Of course, if it’s like Chuck’s fruitcake, you could just leave it out on the
counter for a year, supposedly they improve with age. Especially if they’re
drowned in rum or brandy.

Being in a coastal zone, we often get salt-infused rain/air

Dow Corning DC4 on all outdoor connections at towers. Typically not at

Re: [AFMUG] OT: Chuck, Found your new car

2020-12-07 Thread Cameron Crum
How are you going to get your camping gear and five days worth of food and
other supplies there? If you strap it to the roof you lose your solar. I'm
betting that efficiency is weight related. Two people and the proper gear
for 5 days of camping probably makes that thing as practical as doing it on
a bicycle.
