[amsat-bb] Re: A rose is a rose... is a rose
Bob, Politicians are the same the world over. I note that some of your Politicians seem paranoid about the USA's biggest trading partner, Beijing. I don't mind betting that in a few years time your Politicians will be falling over themselves to vote billions of tax dollars to the Space program to prevent the US falling into 3rd place behind the Russian Federation and Beijing. Fortunately few ever see the name that's allocated to keps. Gould's TV interview, http://www.wbir.com/news/article/178784/2/STEM-education-reaches-new-heights , showed how amateurs can use the media to promote the great acheivement of the ARISSat team. 73 Trevor M5AKA --- On Fri, 5/8/11, Bob Bruninga bruni...@usna.edu wrote: ,,,it now lists keps for 'Radioscaf-B'. (no ARRISat-1' listing). Will that eventually change? I chuckle. We in the USA have virtually abandoned manned space. We have no manned space flight vehicles because all we do is squabble with the attention span of 2 year olds in our politics and long term outlooks. All our politicians do is worry about their re-election in the next 2 years. They cannot face the really big issues that need to be solved without jeopardizing their re-election by the me-first, screw-them electorate. The voters only have the attention span from one radio talk show to the next. So since the Russians are now the only manned space program that can provide the ride, I guess they get to call it whatever they want. Our guys worked VERY HARD to build it and deliver it against unbelieveable pressures and bureaucratic issues, but the only way to get it to ISS was to give it to the Russians. Sigh... [amsat-bb] Re: a little perspective
Hi Bruce, Yes the NASA announcer said 4 satellites, presumbly refering also to the one that's still in Russia and 2 in the States ? Let's hope one more is sent up in time for the February space walk. It must cost the Russians about $150,000 to ship each ARISSat to the ISS and the cost of 2 cosmonauts spending half an hour during a space walk to deploy it must be astronomical - how much did the Canadian golf firm, Element 21 pay to buy a Cosmomauts time to hit a golf ball in space ? 73 Trevor M5AKA --- On Thu, 4/8/11, Bruce Robertson ve9...@gmail.com wrote: I wonder if I might hope that the outrage from us amchair cosmonauts will abate by tomorrow. Let's take a look at what we need and what we've got: as an organization, we need cheap rides to space; but we have some pretty find satellite-building expertise. The relationship with ISS will, if we are reasonable, give us cheap rides. The NASA-TV announcer repeatedly said that ARISSAT-1 was the prototype of a series of satellites! Already, we've had the opportunity to fly our first SDX.The cost of making more along the lines of ARISSAT-1 is minimal compared to the cost of the ride, so this is a crucial relationship. What does ISS want from our relationship? Probably, an increased sense of purpose: we get a ride, they get recognition, and perhaps a bit more TV time for the EVA, and a connection with student research. Here's where it counts for us to be polite in a difficult situation. Focusing on errors, nationalistic name-calling, and the rest, just diminish what they get out the bargain, and make things more difficult for those who work with us who have negotiated these waters. Besides, I think the criticisms underestimate the technical difficulty and novelty of what we've been part of. I've watched many EVAs, and the feeling that things are not exactly going by plan is pretty common (even when Americans are running the show :-) How do you most reliably ship and store a small satellite to an orbiting space station? How do you most safely jettison it during EVA? As a species we have very little experience with this, and didn't get it 100% this time. Surely, kudos is due to AMSAT for being part of the group that is trying to answer these questions. Anyway, I have more fun thinking of it that way. And I'm looking forward to downloading as much telemetry for Kursk as I can. 73, Bruce VE9QRP -- http://ve9qrp.blogspot.com ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Re: PSK v. APRS
Hi Bob, I accept what you are saying about burst mode but it's possible to develop a BPSK system that does burst mode too. A BPSK system with Forward Error Correction can offer a 16 dB advantage over AX.25 1200 FM. As you say there's loads of FM rigs out there so receiving AX.25 is simple and that's the reason everyone still uses it but for the future we should be looking to more efficient means of communication. 73 Trevor M5AKA --- On Tue, 7/6/11, Bob Bruninga bruni...@usna.edu wrote: My pet hate is AX.25 1200bps FM [on] satellites... ...But the reason AX.25 1200bps FM is still used for new satellites is because there's so much infrastructure, TNC's, PC software etc, already inplace, it's the easy option. Actually, there is another very important reason. Link budget. With AX.25 one can have a 2W transmitter on a cubesat which has enough power to hit an HT on the ground with a whip antenna. The same cubesat running BPSK might be restricted to only 200mw. The difference is the Duty Cycle. The AX.25 packet only lasts 1 second say once every 10 seconds for an average power of 200mw. Which is the same power as the continuous power of the BPSK (200 mw) which is all there is available from the cubesat bus. But the advantage of the AX.25 BURST mode is 10 TIMEs the RF power to the user on the ground. For FM mobile-to-mobile satellite communications on OMNI antennas, that is why we use AX.25, to extend satellite links to mobiles. There are of course other issues and BPSK does have better performance for the SAME power, but as you say, there are not that many mobiles with SSB and all the hardware necessary to auto-tune the radio to track the Doppler. [amsat-bb] Re: PSK v. APRS
My pet hate is AX.25 1200bps FM which every satellite seems to use, it uses too much bandwidth, too much power and has no forward error correction. BPSK systems such as that to be used on ARISSat-1 can provide 1000 bps with error correction in less than 1/10th the bandwidth. But the reason AX.25 1200bps FM is still used for new satellites is because there's so much infrastructure, TNC's, PC software etc, already inplace, it's the easy option. Currently there is no single standard for sending data using BPSK not even the data rate is standardized. I believe the BPSK telemetry on FOX will use a different standard to ARISSat. FUNcube and UKube-1 will also use different versions running 1200bps and 9600bps respectively. Personally I think 9600bps BPSK will be the one to go for in the long term but none of these BPSK systems are flying yet. So until they are and are proven to work in space I think AX.25 1200 FM will continue to be used. Getting new equipment on the ISS has an incrediably long lead time and of course relies on someones goodwill to pay some $5,000 a kilo freight charges, so realistically I can't see any significant changes to the ISS equipment for sometime to come. 73 Trevor M5AKA --- On Mon, 6/6/11, Greg Dober alme...@comcast.net wrote: Bob, Guess the APRS dilemma was like splitting the atom. The real use and the unintended use. Could a system like the ISS be switched to a PSK31 or similar mode in the future? How well would PSK work with Doppler etc? [amsat-bb] Re: Interference from repeaters
As I recall IARU Region 1 (EuropeAfrica) approved the use of 145.7875 MHz for repeaters over a decade ago. You're right it's unworkable with the ISS operating on 145.800 MHz +/- 3kHz doppler shift and with 5kHz deviation. Unfortunately that was what IARU Region 1 decided despite having agreed earlier to 145.800MHz being used for ISS. That decision means there are a large numnber of FM and D-STAR repeaters using 145.7875MHz. Anyone near to a 145.7875 MHz repeater will suffer considerable interference when listening to the ISS downlink. 73 Trevor M5AKA --- On Tue, 24/5/11, Richard Ferryman g4...@btinternet.com wrote: I have for some time wondered what was causing a considerable amount or QRM (S9+60dB) to the ISS downlink on 145.800. It took a while to identify as there is no CW ident etc. but I have now discovered this is a new D-Star repeater on our repeater channel RV63 which is 145.7875 MHz, only a couple of kHz from ISS and inside the doppler shift range. It seems very poor planning to place high this powered high sited repeaters so near to the satellite allocation. Is this becoming a common problem and are repeaters also causing any problems to uplinks? Dick G4BBH ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. [amsat-bb] Practical Wireless - FUNcube Dongle Article
The April edition of Practical Wireless magazine has a special treat for all satellite enthusiasts and VHF/UHF listeners - a two page article on the AMSAT-UK FUNcube Dongle radio The FUNcube Dongle (FCD) Software Defined Radio (SDR) was developed as part of the AMSAT-UK FUNcube satellite project. It plugs into the USB port of your PC and although little bigger than a memory stick covers the range 64 - 1700MHz (Note: external antenna required). The FCD costs about £125 and a proportion of the price goes to support AMSAT-UK's FUNcube satellite. So far over 500 have been sold around the world. David Dix G8LZE bought his FCD in January from the second batch to be produced. He must have been quick off the mark as they all sold out in under a minute of going on sale! Since then David has been putting the FCD through its paces. His well written PW article gives an overview of CubeSats and describes the results he obtained with his 1/4 wave 70cm Ground Plane antenna and the free WRplus software. As usual PW is packed full of first class radio articles. In this issue Data Modes columist Mike Richards G4WNC deals with ALE, while Chris Lorek G4HCL, in his Emerging Technology column, shows how once again Amateur Radio work is proving its valuable worth to the emerging future of radio communications. Practical Wireless magazine is on sale now from UK High Street newsagents such as W.H.Smith. Re: [amsat-bb] Fwd: Allocation of 433 – 434 MHz Band for Short Range Devices in VR2
Short Range Devices (SRDs) in 433-434 are bad news. The United Kingdom opened up 433/434 to SRDs in the 1990's. Automobile remote control key fobs used it - very short range, very low power stuff but the killer was the receivers. The Key Fob receivers had wide-open front-ends and collapsed in the presence of nearby RF. The result was that some UK Amateur 70cm repeaters were forced to shutdown to protect the unlicensed SRD's. The UK regulator Ofcom made it mandatory that applications for UK 70cm (430-440MHz) repeater licenses had to prove that they wouldn't cause interference to these unlicensed devices, eg wouldn't block wide-open RF front-ends! Following on from Automobile key fobs came a host of other low power SRD applications that were keen to use 433/434MHz. These have caused interference over a wide area, see Thames estuary SRD Interference on 433.500MHz http://www.g4uvj.btinternet.co.uk/isleofgrain.html SRD in 433/434MHz also impacts the Amateur Satellite Service. Manufacturers of 10 milliwatt walkie-talkies for 433/434 have cleverly run some leads through the battery compartment. If the user cuts these leads their 10mw 433/434MHz walkie talkie or base station gets converted into a 4 watt output transceiver that operates from 433.075 right up to 435.525MHz - well into our satellite allocation, see http://www.southgatearc.org/news/august2009/intek_drs5070_pmr446_radio.htm YouTube - Intek MT 5050 Export http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sgk5NDRP5sQ Industry needs a Globally allocated license exempt UHF allocation between 400 and 2400MHz - there isn't one !! - Global UHF license exempt spectrum is fragmented - Industry is currently trying to get 433-435MHz allocated as Global Unlicensed Spectrum so equipment can be sold anywhere. Belatedly Europe is attempting to allocate 915-921MHz (in-between European cell-phone frequencies) to SRD's. If 915-921MHz doesn't become the Global UHF SRD band then Amateurs will lose 433-435MHz for ever. Is the UK Government going to say to 15 million voters they've got to pay a lot of money to have a decent receiver installed or are they going to shut down a few Amateur repeaters ? Hi Tony, That's great news. Are you able to say what the power budget overhead is in having an SDX transponder? The most efficient SDX I'd heard of still consumed some 310mw more than an analog linear transponder which for a conventional 1U CubeSat is 310mw too many. SDX on a CubeSat with deployable solar panels paves the way to using far higher speed telemetry downlinks than we currently achieve in a 20kHz B/W. 73 Trevor M5AKA --- On Thu, 3/3/11, Anthony Monteiro aa...@comcast.net wrote: From: Anthony Monteiro aa...@comcast.net Subject: Re: [amsat-bb] Re: AMSAT Fox News To: m5...@yahoo.co.uk, amsat-bb@amsat.org Date: Thursday, 3 March, 2011, 0:51 Hi Trevor, The AMSAT Fox CubeSat bus will include both an analog FM transponder and a software defined transponder (SDX.) Snag also is how do you generate enough solar power to get a decent amount of RF output for something in HEO ? I reckon one of the great things about AMSAT-NA's FOX project is that they are experimenting with foldout panels. Never been done on a CubeSat so it's pioneering work. But that's what 1U CubeSat's are great for, a chance to experiment with new ideas at what is in Space Terms a very low cost. Looks like we are going to need to devise new ways of getting more power and functionality in smaller packages. FOX is a great step in that direction. 73 Trevor M5AKA ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. The natural follow to having a receiver on 135kHz is as you say to retransmit it on 70cm. Such a system would in theory permit 2-way QSO's to be held via the sat. [amsat-bb] Re: Amateur Satellite Frequency Allocations (LF)
Hi Art, Thanks for the reply. --- On Sun, 12/12/10, W4ART Arthur Feller afel...@ieee.org wrote: The general principle is that the amateur-satellite service has frequency allocations in bands where the amateur service has frequency allocations in all three ITU regions. I'm not so sure that's so. The amount of new Amateur Satellite Service spectrum allocated by ITU since the mid 1970's is ZERO but the Amateur Service world-wide has gained spectrum. The only exceptions are in the bands 1260-1270 MHz and 5650-5670 MHz, which are limited to the Earth-to-space direction, and 3400-3410 MHz, which are available in Regions 2 and 3. See RR 5.282. As you say back in the 70's 1260 and 5650 MHz were made Earth to Space only. Does anyone know why this restriction was put in place ? Or even if the reason for this restriction still applies 35 years later ? So, until broadcasters vacate 7100-7200 in Regions 1 and 3, the amateur-satellite service won't have a frequency allocation. Make sense?? No, an Amateur Satellite Service allocation at 7.1-7.2MHz is not on the agenda for the next WRC in 2012 and currently IARU has no plans to ever ask for one! See IARU spectrum requirements at: http://www.iaru.org/ac-09spec.pdf In it's entire history the IARU has not gained any ITU Primary Amateur Satellite allocations in the bands above 146 MHz. We have no Primary allocations above 146MHz until you get to 24GHz. While it is encouraging to see that IARU would like to see Amateur Satellite Service allocations at 50MHz and 3400MHz there are no other proposed Amateur Satellite Service allocations on its agenda. The ARRL is by far the largest financial donor to IARU and so carries the most clout. If ARRL isn't persuaded of the need for additional Amateur Satellite Service allocations they won't happen. 73 Trevor M5AKA ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. From my point of view potentially the valuable part of FOX is the deployable Solar Panels. This has never been done on a 1U CubeSat and should significantly increase the power available. A space proven system to deploy panels on a 1U sat will benefit not just AMSAT-NA for future projects but the entire CubeSat community. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get to the symposium so perhaps you could clarify one of the slides for me. Slide 16 mentions both a U/V FM transpoder and a V telemetry beacon. Is the telemetry beacon on a seperate frequency from the transponder so both can run at the same time ? Also is the beacon using the robust narrow band, high efficiently, BPSK system developed for ARISSat-1 ? [amsat-bb] US Space Policy - Export Restrictions
Do I detect a very slight loosening of the Export Restrictions with regard to Space in the new policy released Monday. Compare below with 12 Effective Export Policy in the 2006 version. National Space Policy of the United States of America http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/national_space_policy_6-28-10.pdf Effective Export Policies Consistent with the U.S. export control review, departments and agencies should seek to enhance the competitiveness of the U.S. space industrial base while also addressing national security needs. The United States will work to stem the flow of advanced space technology to unauthorized parties. Departments and agencies are responsible for protecting against adverse technology transfer in the conduct of their programs. The United States Government will consider the issuance of licenses for space-related exports on a case-by-case basis, pursuant to, and in accordance with, the International Traffic in Arms Regulations, the Export Administration Regulations, and other applicable laws, treaties, and regulations. Consistent with the foregoing space-related items that are determined to be generally available in the global marketplace shall be considered favorably with a view that such exports are usually in the national interests of the United States. Sensitive or advanced spacecraft-related exports may require a government-to-government agreement or other acceptable arrangement. 2006 US Space Policy http://www.fas.org/irp/offdocs/nspd/space.pdf 1996 US Space Policy http://www.fas.org/spp/military/docops/national/nstc-8.htm 73 Trevor M5AKA Daily Amateur Radio Email/RSS News: http://www.southgatearc.org/ Email Your News To: editor at southgatearc.org Or Upload Using Form At: http://www.southgatearc.org/news/your_news_1.htm ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] SRMSAT
A satellite being built by students of SRM University in Chennai may be launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in September The primary load on the September launch is Cartosat and this launch is also slated to carry two Amateur Radio satellites STUDSAT and TISat-1. The NDTV report does not give the name of the satellite the SRM University students are building but it is believed to refer to SRMSAT. A description of the SRMSAT ground station indicates it may use the bands 145.8MHz for the uplink and 434.5MHz for the downlink. An SRM University press release describes SRMSAT as a 15 watt satellite weighing between 10 and 15 kg and measuring one meter cube. The project is estimated at Rs 2 crore and the construction of the satellite is on within the university’s premises. “This project is aimed at increasing the technical expertise of our staff and students and giving them the rare opportunity of constructing a satellite first-hand with ISRO scientists guiding them. We want to prove that our students are worthy of this feat. We hope to launch a satellite once in every two years, of course, with different scientific objectives,” says P Satyanarayana, vicechancellor, SRM University. [amsat-bb] Moonbound CubeSat
Article from EETimes: The proposed lunar lander will be a single unit CubeSat with four mini-thrusters on the bottom to maximise control and manoeuvrability. Two potential options for propulsion are being examined – a bi-propellant booster or a Xenon powered ion drive booster. The Xenon thruster can also be used for a triple CubeSat that would go to and orbit the moon. The team is currently working on initial designs for the spacecraft, with the aim of achieving further NASA funding in June 2011. I am, however amused, when with media statements like there is 100-miles of shoreline impacted. Exxon-Valdez spill contaminated 1100 miles of Alaska shoreline from Cordova to beyond Kodiak Island. In time, the impact of the Gulf spill will easily eclipse that of the AK spill. Alaska shore is almost entirely wilderness, while the Gulf and Atlantic coasts are mostly inhabited - fishing or resort industries.
