[amsat-bb] SPROUT received in UK
I have submitted my report via the Sprout website. 25 may 2014 1308 utc, slightly later than yesterday's keps predicted. I used an SDR receiver (FCD ProPlus )and took a screendump. I was surprised that on replay the modulation was not afsk ie no tones heard -just heard the rushing noise and saw the data on the dump. is that normal for gmsk? So I sent the sdr image file instead of the hex code - hope they find it as it was only possible to do this under the sstv section of thew ebsite. 73 de andy g0sfj ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] A simple receive station for the kicksat Sprites
My contribution to the Sprite project is now hosted at : http://kicksat.wordpress.com/support/kicksat-ground-station/ although I still need to amend the typo that sets the frequency at 437.4 when it should be 437.240. Thanks to MJ for setting this up for me now that my personal website hosted by Google is full (I need to talk to them about that!). In the page I have tried to set out a simple and modest station (my own!) which should be in the reach of a target school science teacher or similar. This station received the 100mW transmitter of $50sat at a distance of 640km as shown on the waterfall display. Thanks to the team of $50sat for their inspirational project. This waterfall display and SDR receiver is needed for the bandwidth of the Sprite transmisison, and the aim is to record the entire pass for the project's database. From an operator's point of view, the most important thing to notice is that no dongle is accurately calibrated and so you should not necessarily believe that the frequency you set in software is the frequency you actually get! I hope this page will encourage people to try for the interception of the Sprirtes when they are launched shortly. 73 de andy g0SFJ ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] How to get a cheap handheld broadband RF preamp
This is primarily for the team getting ready for the Kicksat Sprite project but I am posting it on the amsat -bb as well as there may be a science teacher out there who may be interested.I'm not claiming it's revolutionary, but timely. The requirement is for an inexpensive antenna-head preamp, lightweight, running on a battery. I wouldn't claim it is a low noise preamp, but CATV ampifiers are available for under £5 including delivery from China. I bought one in a car boot sale for a £1. It was supposed to work on mains electricty (220 volts!) and is therefore obviously unsuitable to use outside. So I have taken out the mains transformer and the diode rectifier matrix and now run it off a 9 volt battery. I've also shown that the input and output sockets can be changed. This is simple soldering as even I can do it. Obviously the same principle applies to any TV amplifier, broadband, and needing filtering at the antenna head. Just look to see if 435 MHz is included in the bandwidth. At some point I'll design and construct an input filter. For those who may be interested, here's a direct link to my page: https://sites.google.com/site/andythomasorg/funcube/cheap-rf-amplifier or you can get there by going to http://www.andythomas.eu , choosing Funcube from the drop down menu and then get the page from the bottom of the Funcube page. 73 de andy G0SFJ ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. I've added a Funcube page (from the menu) to my website http://www.andythomas.eu describing lessons learned about using dashboard software etc rom the perspective of an interested science teacher using a dongle (rather than just using my ICOM IC-910). I don't feel bad about admitting the problems I encountered. All project managers know that the lessons learned log is the bit you wish you'd known before you started the project. For those of us about to receive the Kicksat Sprites (when launched), and others using RTL dongles, the experience may be useful. 73 de andy G0SFJ ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Thanks for qsl card
All this is just a public posting to thank the FITSAT-1 Niwaka team for their qsl card (number 124) acknowledging my reception of JQ6YEW, which I received in the post this morning. In my opinion, following this tradition of ham radio proves the entitlement to the use of these frequencies which lie within the passbands of our transceivers. I have listened for ham radio operators since 1968 and as a teenager at that time I sent my reception reports, seeking the goodwill of the operators. The thrill of QSl'ing hasn't gone away, although I am now licensed to transmit and hold my DXCC and Diamond DXCC on HF. I wish more satellites would follow this tradition, as I am keeping my personal documentary record of the use of amateur satellites in this way. Knowing little about design, I just wonder if rather than deploying cubesats fitted as ballast, a transponder could not be fitted to the hull of the appropriate vessel which contains the sats and ballast? It could also relay vibrations from the vessel as it tumbled in the sky and would therefore have some utility to launch provider? [amsat-bb] DOKA-B/ Yubileiny
Everything I now about Doka-b is at: https://sites.google.com/site/andythomasorg/amateur-satellites/rs-30-yubileiny I have seen it in action, it is a combined hard wired modem interface and az/el controller at the ground station end. It is only available to Russian (diaspora?) universities and is a protected commercial secret. Each setup is unique to the particular university research project and multiple projects at different Russian universities have their own groundstations. I think you have to consider the satellite part as one half of a whole network with the ground station which performs the connection being the other half of the circuit. To that extent, consider the satellite as having its own tcp/ip address, and its transceiver operating in a psk variant using radio to link instead of a cable. A lot of handshaking etc. I don't think there is a broadcast mode in Doka-b, just the circuit, although it is understood to be possible for the transmitter to beacon images and other data. 73 de andy g0sfj ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] ISS Symposium 2012: A personal reflection from G0SFJ
All, This is my personal reflection on the last few days of the ISS Symposium 2012, organised by ESA and DLR in Berlin. Official highlights are on their own website, twitter, youtube etc. It's impossible to single out any particular speaker, so I'd like to give only an account of some things that resonated with my own amateur experience. I was very pleased to see in an early presentation by Julie Robinson the images of both ends of an ARISS contact, and equally it was heartening to see in the NASA Assembly complete edition of the Reference Guide to the ISS on page 95, Communications, a diagram in which we see Ham radio transmits directly to the ground. The theme of engagement with young people was a constant throughout the Sympsoium with many references to them being inspired by astronaut/cosmonaut contacts, and I felt that ARISS was recognised as an important programme in this, hence my invitation described on my label , amongst the space professionals, as Radio amateur -G0SFJ.. Roscosmos/ TsNiiMash also referred to the Shadow experiment which relies on sending a beacon or Mayak signal from the ISS and received on Earth by us hams - and as a participant I talked with TsNiiMash delegates about that - and illustrated their presentations with Chiblis-M and with the MAI SSTV experiment. And the 3D journey in an adjoining salon visited the antennae on the Columbus module, both in simulation and in a real 3D picture! Over dinner I discussed my personal view that some of us as hams would like to see more contacts of opportunity with the crew as time allowed, and I also described our work in receiving and passing on cubesat data. There was a view expressed that cubesats' reliance on COTS radio equipment did not always teach much about radio, and student Cubesat projects did not always lead to the next level of bigger and more complex space equipment. I was interested in this common problem between space science and ham radio, of getting young people involved, in this age of throwaway mobile phones and laptops. I was a little surprised that some German delegates I spoke to did not know of the work of the ISEI in Leipzig and the Kosmonautenzentrum in Chemnitz, who both stimulate young people into space exploration in their own ways, and I think the people who do this good work should enjoy a higher recognition. Many presentations demonstrated the utility of space-generated data to Earth based problems, and a good example came from the reinterpretation of data taken on salt consumption by Sigmund Jähn on an Intercosmos flight in 1978. It was both interesting and disturbing to see that bone tissue had not regrown to preflight levels in many long duration astronauts and cosmonauts. Visual problems were also becoming obvious. The debate extended beyond the current use of the ISS into the future of space exploration, Waleed Abdalati giving an inspirational speech about the future. Essentially our sphere of action extends only to the asteroid belt. From the floor I asked the symposium a question of medical ethics, whether the Mars crew should be a younger or an older crew. As I recall, Chiaki Mukai immediately picked up on Because of the radiation! and the panel agreed with her and with psychologist Peter Suedfeld, who said that life taught many experiences in problem solving, that an older crew - by which I think we meant over about 55 - would be the ones who should go. Oleg Orlov from IBMP in Moscow concurred. Later, when Charles Bolden spoke about the US commitment to a manned flight to Mars in 2030, I fell to thinking that the US crew who would go would be currently Astronauts aged about 40. That is my personal conclusion. Bolden added in his speech - and comes back to Earth and has lost his vision. Should we be thinking of that? I think we should be thinking of that. There is no doubt in my mind that a manned expedition to Mars is not yet possible and Bolden said we also had to look at new ways of communications in working up to it. Interesting that in discussions over dinner, Amsat-DL's proposed satellite mission to Mars, the dish at Bochum and the possible use of a 30 m dish elsewhere was also recognised as a potential contributor. It seemed evident to me, too, that the compromises inherent in the design of the ISS were beginning to show. Roscosmos emphsised their interest in flying a separate vehicle unatennded by humans except at the beginning and end of its experiments, in order to take away the minimal disturbances describes by Bolden as some astronaut jumping about on a treadmill, but also I think attitude changes in pitch, roll and yaw, which are corrected for to an extent in experiments, are also a potential problem to zero grvity experiments such as crystal growth or metallurgy. And it was evident to me that the data on ozone depletion by a JAXA experiment SMILES only touched the edges of the problem region due to the ISS

[amsat-bb] CHIBIS-M satellite to launch to ISS
The CHIBIS-M research satellite is to launch to the ISS/MKC on the Progress cargo mission of 25/26 January. The payload is a scientific satellite to be deployed from the ISS/MKC to study the magnetic field in the auroral zone. It follows a long tradition of magnetosphere studies dating back to Sputnik-3, which (you will recall) nearly beat Van Allen to the detection of the eponymous Belts. There will be a CW telemetry downlink of control/housekeeping data to the Kolibri-2000 standard on a frequency around 435 MHz. I'll post further info if/when I get it. This is an important debate in difficult times. I am with G7HIA on this one, namely that *** if there is no damage to the satellite *** a QRP (below 5w handy) operation might be considered to be feasible on a centre frequency. It is not our bird to give permission. There are of course two transponders on board. If permission were given ONLY for QRP in effect this means that WE must police this. It would be for us to discorage alligators. (Technically alligators can already use the bird anyway but don't). 73 de andy g0sfj ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. [amsat-bb] Received from shadow experiment
CURRENT INFORMATION ON 02-05.11.2011 SERIES OF SPASE EXPERIMENT “SHADOW-BEACON” Dear friends! It was earlier announced that timetable of SpEx “Shadow-beacon” sessions on November 26-27 -2011 was reduced because the crew is newcomers and need much time to assimilate the experience. For the same reason earlier announced sessions on December 02-05 -2011 are cancelled all. Sergey Samburov (RV3DR), the employee of space-rocket corporation Energia which is responsible for an amateur radio on ISS, explains that an observed fact that the onboard radio “Sputnik” was accidentally switched on standard simplex 145.825 MHz not the ordered duplex 144.36/ 145.825 MHz digipeater mode because of old age of the onboard gear- it is in use more than 10 years. Some times Sergey has already observed malfunction like this. New radio are to be delivered onboard ISS by April cargo vehicle and Mission Control Center (TsUP) plans new SpEx “Shadow-beacon” sessions on May-June 2012. With this reason you are asked not to delete your registration on our site. Again many thanks for those submitted reports and made other assistance! [amsat-bb] Minimum FCD setup to detect Arissat-1 bpsk?
This afternoon using a Fubcube Dongle I detected the arissat-1 spectrum on 145.920 as the transmision doppled across. I've screendumped it as evidence! The signal was weak but visible (and audible) and rapid as you would expect at the nominal frequency. I used FCHiD to set the frequency and HDSDR to demod it at usb. I owe it all to my homebrew one-transistor untuned preamp (RSGB's VHF-UHF handbook) at the end of a 6 ele XY fixed in az/el. It didn't decode at the tlm software though, and I'll try again next weekend using DK3WN's doppler control software. However I am pleased I have detected arissat1 bpsk with a FCD - that's one small step... 73 de andy g0sfj ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. At the flea market in St Petersburg (Russia, not Fla!) this August I bought a Russian ex-ship Oscarlocator- type device for geostationary satellites in the Inmarsat series. It's a map of the world with the satellites marked on it along the equator, and a transparent plastic overlay from which you can read the az and el to the satellite from your position. It rotaes around a central screw. Obviously it'll work with any geostationary satellite once you have drawn it in. I have scanned all 3 components - map, overlay and Russian text - and translated the text. I sent it to amsat-uk for their bulletin but I don't think they are interested. Maybe nobody is. But if anyone is, let me know and I'll post it on my website. 73 de andy g0sfj ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? Depending on what mode it thinks it should be in, I suppose it's possible that it might in fact be in one of those power saving quiet periods at that time, and only be heard a few minutes later. Entering sunlight is not a knife-edged event in orbit; there's a short ramp in power, so (playing arm-chair engineer here) I expect it would be in low or emergency power mode for a short while. [amsat-bb] Arissat-1 Voice telemetry analysis from G0SFJ
I have submitted for a tlm certificate my analysis of the voice telemetry from Arissat-1 on certain orbits in September (when I was present, hi). The dates of the receptions in September are in the analysis spreadsheet. The MET is decreasing, I think this is because the satellite comes out of eclipse and swithches on nearer the observation, as the orbit is precessing I think the analysis shows that as the MET decreases, the IHU temperature decreases, and the battery current increases (this is a lesser negative number). Put that another way, as the MET in sunlight increases, the IHU temperature increases and the circuit current decreases (greater negative number). However I don't know why the circuit reports a negative current, or even if the voice tlm is accurate. I'd be grateful for any comments. 73 de Andy G0SFJ . ___ Sent via AMSAT-BB@amsat.org. Guys you won't like it - brace yourself: BEGINS New satellite to commemorate first space flight permalink email story to a friend print version Published: 03 August, 2011, 20:02 Two Russian cosmonauts have left the International Space Station for a six-hour spacewalk to mark the 50th anniversary of the first-ever manned space flight by Yuri Gagarin with the launch of the unique microsatellite. The cosmonauts will spend about six hours outside the ISS and for the first time ever computerized Orlan-MK spacesuits with liquid crystal displays will give advice and instructions in case of emergency situations, such as increased oxygen consumption. During the spacewalk, the cosmonauts will launch a microsatellite made entirely by Russian university students. The satellite – which is dubbed “Kedr” (cedar) after Yuri Gagarin’s call sign – will be broadcasting greeting messages from outer space in 50 different languages to mark the 50th anniversary of the first-ever manned space flight. The cosmonauts will also install laser communication equipment on the outside of the Russian segment of the ISS. However, it does not mean high-speed internet will be available in the Russian segment, as long as “the new optical equipment is intended primarily to transfer science video to enhance the efficiency of the scientific activity of the cosmonauts,” the head of the extravehicular activity department of RSC Energia, Aleksandr Polishchuk said. With the US Shuttle program shutting down last month, Russia is currently the only nation able to send people to the stars. Interesting debate. I would be interested in submitting my book of qsl cards for an award but the problem is that my operations with an Arrow were in different countries, such as: F/G0SFJ/P YL/G0SFJ/P LZ/G0SFJ/P etc etc and probably a half-dozen or so qsl cards from each location. [amsat-bb] Kenwood THD-72A/E Duplex function
At the (British) National Hamfest yesterday I had a play with the pre-production model of the THD-72E and asked about full duplex. I couldn't get into full duplex on the menu and had to give the set back but I insisted onthe question in the name of AMSAT and they went to the manuals while some other guys played with it. On the second manual(printed off the cdrom) - which they said was about the packet function - there was the following instruction: FULL DUPLEX Ths transceiver is also capable of simultaneously transmitting and receiving signals. So it is possible to transmit audio on the current band while receiving packet data on the other band (data band). 1 Set operation band to band B 2.Press [F DUP] to enter Duplex mode ... Notes * When operating on band A you cannot change to full duplex mode. * When in single band mode and Band A/B is set to VHF/VHF or UHF/UHF you cannot change to Full Duplex mode. * When usin the Full Duplex function, connect an earphone to the SP jack. using an earphone will prevent feedback that can cause the transceiver to emit a howling sound. I have photographed these instructions and transcribed from the photo. For some reason I photographed the manual not the radio which is a squat fat two-tone grey thing. It's got a gps built in. Available end 2010, they said. 73 de andy g0sfj ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author. Not an AMSAT-NA member? Join now to support the amateur satellite program! I have never had any problems taking my Arrow in my checked-in luggage to Russia, the EU or Belarus. see http://www.andythomas.eu But Russia, Ukraine and Belarus require a customs declaration about high frequency radios so I have always used local hams' radios for the fm satellites in these countries. Within the EU I take the handheld with me in carry-on luggage with a full battery to be able to switch it on, and at check in tell the airline I'm happy to show it to the pilot (or anyone else!!). I separate the battery from the HT for the xray and offer to connect and switch on if asked. [amsat-bb] Graph of eclipse/sunlight
I've been looking at some cosmonauts' historic accounts of missions on the Salyut series of orbital spacecraft. Characteristically they have drawn a graph of the eclipse and sunlight times of the long duration mission. The vertical axis is time after EQX of the first orbit of the day (the entry into and departure from eclipse is marked on this axis in 5 minute intervals) and the horizontal axis is the mission day. The result is a graph in which lines extend horizontally conencting the eclipse times (both in and out), and they have characteristically filled in the darkness time with dark pen. On one print the light time has another contour with what appears to be sun angle. The graph has then been added to by showing the plan and actual activity on that mission day. I would find it interesting to compute a similar graph for a long duration mission of the ISS. But I have some difficulty. From a TLE I can do the following: *calculate first eqx in utc but can't find the time of crossing into eclipse without knowing the position of the sun and the position of the spacecraft in relation to the sun (Subsatellite point?). Does anyone have any idea about the calculation and data involved? It must have been a hand calculation carried out by cosmonauts, but once a simple program is written I could use excel to draw the graph. Maybe a standard predictor program can produce a data output that could be rewritten into excel? I'd need the eclipse times on the orbit following the first eqx of the day. I would appreciate any input, also any thoughts of why they would want to draw it (have only thought of observation and power). many thanks 73 de andy G0SFJ ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. I know Yaogan-7 is supposed be an earth observation satellite but there is more than one way to skin a cat - remember the RS- series of satellites piggybacking on a common power supply bus - and the fact that the HF commemmorative station is suddenly activated may well mean something. If you go to celestrak and look at the last 30 days' launches you will see that there are a number of items identified as rocket debris with a 97 degree inclination obviosuly part of the launch sequence for Yaogan-7's 98 degree inclination. fascinating watching the installation of the dual band antenna. many thanks to all concereed. it prompts me to ask: 1. what wasthe location of the antenna were they using before? 2. I thought I heard that the new ARISS antenna is on the starboard side - I assume that is relative to the direction of travel - whereas the AIS antenna is on the earth facing side. What will be the effect of the location of the ARISS antenna on those of us at latitudes with values above the ISS orbital inclination (of 51.7)? ie bearing in mind the attitude and direction of the station when at these high latitudes, will the architecture of the ISS shadow the antenna? [amsat-bb] Re: Universitetsky 2 (Tatiana 2
When I was at MGU (Moscow state university) in May this year I heard that because of the controversy over the use in the Amateur band of the multiplex system Doka on Yubileiny, they had decided not to use an amateur band on this bird. Doka is a system used by Russian universities, originating from engineers in Kaluga. Instead they would use the scientific/educational band at 1.7 GHz, near the HRPT band, and installed a small dish on the roof of the high-energy physics building for that purpose (I have stood next to it). The location cannot see low elevations because of nearby high buildings. Therefore I don't think Tatiana 2 has a 435 MHz beacon but i am checking with friends in Moscow. 73 de andy G0SFJ ___ Sent via amsat...@amsat.org. Opinions expressed are those of the author.
