Thanks Dev for pointing to this.

One man who needs all credit for spotting the

Rahman, if pushed a little, is willing to think laterally.
With Thalapathi, Mani Ratnam ended his association
with music director Illaiyaraja, bringing in Rahman. It turned out to
be Mani's greatest findings.
A quiet Rahman in spite of his tall achievements is
still humble and down-to-earth. Rahman said, 'I feel my slate is yet to

Mani Ratnam and Rahman's partnership is widely
regarded as having produced some of the best film music in Indian

Dear Aakarsh,

Your Instrumentals are out of the world, and you have all the chance and good
wishes of me and everyone here to be part of AR's Team. I have all your
instrumentals with me till date, and I have a request.

I dont know if you would have heard AR's Tamil Works. There is a movie by name
TAJMAHAL which had music of AR.

It has wonderful classical folk type music ( with fusion ingredients in it )

There is a very famous song " Eechi Elumichi" , and the flute bit of the tune
comes as a BGM all through the movie. Its such a wonderful piece. I have it
with me and shall share the entire BGMs soon.

I would like you to make an instrumental of the full song " Eechi Elumichi". It
may be tough, as the song is little complex..

Thanks in anticipation.

( Its a loving request. )

God Bless you .

Re: [arr] SDm - Box office - India

2009-02-11 Thread rivjot
Hmm how about this article -

'Slumdog Millionare' poised to gross Rs.300 mn in India

Mumbai, Feb 7 (IANS) Oscar contender Slumdog Millionaire, which has
received global critical acclaim and become a worldwide box-office
success, has raked in Rs.215 million since its Jan 23 release in India
and is expected to gross about Rs.300 million."We expect Slumdog
Millionaire to make about Rs.300 million in India. Considering the
fact that it is not one of the formula films, its box-office
performance in India so far is really gratifying. Frankly, it was
beyond our expectations," Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star Studios that
brought the film to India, told IANS.

The money made by the film in India is nearly four percent of its
worldwide collection of Rs.5.30 billion.

Fox Star has released both the English and Hindi versions of Slumdog
Millionaire in India. Expectedly, the Hindi version, "Slumdog
Crorepati" has fared better at the box-office, contributing 30 percent
more to the distributor's kitty.

"The Hindi version is doing better business in the smaller centres. In
fact, we had to increase the number of prints of the Hindi version in
the second week of its run following the public demand in those
centres," Singh said.

"Slumdog Millionare" opened with Rs.135 million overall and its per
print earnings in second week stood at Rs.592,000 in an average, which
is excellent for a film of its genre when taken into account that as
many 363 prints of the film were in circulation in the second week of
its run in India.

Although the number of prints has been reduced to 350 in the third
week, according to Singh, multiplexes in some cities have increased
the number of shows to cater to the demand.

The heart-warming story of a poor boy from the slums of Mumbai who
goes on to win the Indian version of TV game show "Who Wants To Be A
Millionaire" has won top prizes from the Directors Guild of America,
Screen Actors Guild and Producers Guild of America, as also the Golden
Globes and Critics' Choice Awards.

The film by British Director Danny Boyle is also leading in the Oscar
race with 10 nominations.

In the script: Beaufoy, Boyle and 'Slumdog Millionaire'
by Susan Wloszczyna, USA TODAY

TORONTO — There was no way that Danny Boyle, the cutting-edge British
director of Trainspotting and 28 Days Later, was going to do a film
about a subject as pedestrian as a TV game show.

Or so he thought.

"The producer sent me the script," he says of Slumdog Millionaire, which
has taken in $56 million at the box office, fetched 10 Oscar nominations
and is the current favorite for best picture. "My agent or someone told
me it was about Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."

But before Boyle could toss it aside, he caught the name of the
screenwriter: Simon Beaufoy, whose first Oscar bid was for The Full
Monty, the surprise international hit from 1997.

"Simon's terrific, so I genuinely thought I should read it and speak to
him about it, imagining that I would say no," Boyle says. Not quite. "I
was 20 pages in, and that was it. You just know when you are going to do
something."

the above one is dated 4 NOVEMBER 2007.

Google gave another one, dated 15/08/2007 at
http://www.millarprescott.com/screenplays/?id=41
or
http://millarprescott.com/screenplays/slumdog_millionaire.pdf

It appears the same to begin with, but there are differences, like -
Jamal's name is Amir. Questions are different, like, instead of the
cryptic "what does Rama carry in his hand" which appeared impossible for
a muslim boy, the question is "who accompanied Rama to the forest" and
the answer Sita must be obvious to muslims also.

Enjoy.

[arr] The poet of "Darshan Do Ghanshyam" is ...

2009-02-11 Thread V S Rawat
Now we’re into the serious money. For two hundred and fifty thousand
rupees, ladies and gentlemen, a quarter of a million rupees...

The song "Darshan Do Ghanshyam" was written by which famous Indian poet?
Was it
A) Surdas. B) Tulsidas.
C) Mira Bai. D) Kabir.

Remember you still have two lifelines- fifty-fifty and Phone A Friend.

Tempted to use one?

--

And the correct Answer is:

E) None of these.

--

Yes.

The film is facing yet another controversy, a genuine one this time.

The song was not written by any of the above four legendary poets
suggested in the answers.

It was not a historical or legendary song at all.

It was just a film song. (sorry for appearing to indicate as if film
song are in lesser vain. No, they are not. but I hope you get the idea).

It was written for the Goel Cine Corporation's 1957 film "Narsi Bhagat",
composed by MD Ravi, rendered by singers Hemant Kumar, Manna Dey and
Sudha Malhotra

And the poet is -> Gopal Singh Nepali.

So, please give back all the cheques you had been given so far, and go
back to your home. You have lost.

Next contestant please.

(The film ends here.)
--

ha ha ha.

What an oops!, what a slip, what a mistake. Very Interesting.

It will remain a rare faux pas on Indian Silver Screen that would be
quoted for ever. The way those who have scene Devanand, Nanda starrer
Hum Dono might recall that in the song Allah Tero naam, Ishwar tero
naam, at one place, Lata ji voice follows another pattern whereas the
face of the screen (Nanda?) that was supposed to be singing this song,
her lips were following a different pattern altogether.

Anyway. Local newspaper reports that film makers have agreed that this
was a mistake.

btw, I checked the draft script link posted in this list today and found
that it was not a mistake of the original author, or the script writer.
That draft doesn't mention the song "Darshan Do Ghanshyam". On page 33,
that question is about some song "Chalo Ri Murali".

(I have removed all references of the film name so that oscar voters
don't find this mail of mine highlighting the error. :-) Of course, they
would find it elsewhere.)

Enjoy.

All the actors in Hollywood want to work with him. We both shared with each
other our experiences on how we started our career in films and so on. He is
a great listener too. I spent a lot of time with him on the dinner table
which will always remain special.

*Any comments from Clint on your film or on your performance in Slumdog
Millionaire?*
He loved the film and the performances. But what he did mention to me was
that a film like Slumdog Millionaire has split wide opened the doors for the
actors in the East to come join the West.

There was a time during his peak when they had to rely heavily on the actors
only from Hollywood but he feels that even Bollywood has now made its big
leap with such a film, thanks to Danny Boyle.

He knows that Indian actors can act and win awards at the worlds biggest
award functions. He also predicted that Slumdog Millionaire might do $300
million worth of collection at the box office.

*Do you think that Slumdog Millionaire is a Bollywood film then?*
It is completely a Bollywood film. The story is very Indian and so are all
the actors. Hence I was offered to do Slumdog Millionaire; I didn't know who
Danny Boyle was.

For me, he was just a filmmaker who made films. People go to see people in
films. So you tell me who were the people in this film? They were Indians.
Some like me were professional actors, others were new comers, and some were
completely raw in their performances.

But all had one thing in common - They were somehow connected to the Indian
roots. Indian cinema should be very proud of Slumdog Millionaire.

*While all the guests and nominees were escorted under the huge umbrella,
you went for the role reversal by holding your own umbrella on the wet red
carpet. Why?*
(Laughs) I had an escort with an umbrella but the way he was holding the
umbrella was getting me wet. I got hold of the umbrella myself so at least I
could protect my suit and my hair (laughs).

*Oscar night is almost ten days away. Any designers who are trying to dress
you up for your biggest awards night ever?*
There are loads but I'll be sticking to ready made suits. Like the one I was
wearing at the BAFTA's was a creation by Armani. I will again go with the
best in the business, Armani, for the Oscars.

*Did you get emotional when A.R. Rahman and Resul Pookutty walked on the
stage to collect their BAFTAs? *
We were all sitting together with all of us feeling excited, thrilled and at
the same time, a bit emotional. I met both of them during dinner where I
showered my emotions on them by hugging them tight.

It was a proud moment for all three of us who represent the Indian Film
Industry popularly known as Bollywood. Resul had earlier worked on my film
Gandhi My Father for which, I think, he should've won an Oscar for the kind
of work he had done in the film.

But sometimes there is something better and bigger installed for you. You
have to be aligned doing consistently good work and that's what Rahman and
Resul have done. So when you're consistent about your work, not thinking
what the result is going to be, and you keep on doing good work, someday you
will be awarded.

*Will Slumdog Millionaire's success change the fate of Bollywood and
Hollywood for good?*
A hopeful change, I must say. Everybody has to take a broad minded and a
positive attitude towards what has happened with Slumdog and embrace its
success. If people, and by that I mean, everyone connected to filmmaking try
to put the film down or condemn it, then they will miss this golden
opportunity.

*Any Hollywood celebrity you met and mingled with inside the famous Royal
Opera House in Convent Garden? *
Now this has been one of my big moments in life. I met most of the Hollywood
stars like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Mickey Rourke and Kate Winslet. I
also congratulated Penelope Cruz.

It was just a quick introduction to them. But what I found was so touching
about all the names I've just mentioned is, the bigger and richer you get as
an actor, the more humble and down to earth you are.

Everybody connected with films all over the world knows everybody connected
with Slumdog Millionaire. But I'd like to mention that the one person who
was dearly missed at last nights BAFTAs was the Late Heath Ledger. I
wou

Prana, Apana, Vyana, Udana and Samana.

All the 5 Vital Forces are within us, and AR's music emanates and simulates

Hmm how about this article -

'Slumdog Millionare' poised to gross Rs.300 mn in India

Mumbai, Feb 7 (IANS) Oscar contender Slumdog Millionaire, which has
received global critical acclaim and become a worldwide box-office
success, has raked in Rs.215 million since its Jan 23 release in India
and is expected to gross about Rs.300 million."We expect Slumdog
Millionaire to make about Rs.300 million in India. Considering the
fact that it is not one of the formula films, its box-office
performance in India so far is really gratifying. Frankly, it was
beyond our expectations, " Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star Studios that
brought the film to India, told IANS.

The money made by the film in India is nearly four percent of its
worldwide collection of Rs.5.30 billion.

Fox Star has released both the English and Hindi versions of Slumdog
Millionaire in India. Expectedly, the Hindi version, "Slumdog
Crorepati" has fared better at the box-office, contributing 30 percent
more to the distributor' s kitty.

[arr] Classic Material ( AR's Nice snap attached )

2009-02-11 Thread Vithur
Few music directors in present-day Bollywood dare to showcase South Asian
classical music in its purest forms. Fortunately, AR Rahman is one who does.
His latest release comes at the end of a particularly fruitful creative
period. It began in early 2008 with notable soundtracks such as Jodhaa Akbar
and Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, and continued with the soundtrack to Slumdog
Millionaire, for which he has won a Golden Globe and a Bafta, and secured
three Oscar nominations. Now, with Delhi-6, he impresses again.

The film, directed by Rakesh Omprakash Mehra, tells the story of an
American-born Indian who travels to Delhi with his ailing grandmother. What
was meant to be a quick visit turns into a protracted journey that places
him in the heart of Chandni Chowk, the rambling, mazelike market district in
Old Delhi. The number 6 is derived from the last digit of its postcode,
which has become its local shorthand name.

The first song of the album, Masakali (Free Spirited) sung by Mohit Chauhan,
is playful, with soft percussion and keyboards. The accordion takes centre
stage along with Chauhan's voice, the music and vocals expressing the song's
sentiment perfectly. Rahman's Sufi influences are evident on the second
track, Arziyan (Requests), performed as a qaawali, the style of religious
song made famous by the Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. In turn,
Aarti (Tumre Bhavan Mein) is a sombre, Hindu prayer song – the title of
which translates as In Your Abode) – delivered over restrained and minimal
accompaniment.

However, it is in Bhor Bhaye (The Arrival of Dawn) that the listener is
introduced to the rich tradition of Hindustani classical music. Paying close
attention to harmony and melody while cleverly tying the past to the present
and future, Rahman samples the voice of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, a
legendary Patiala gharana singer who died in 1968, then intersperses it with
contributions by the up and coming young performer Shreya Ghoshal.

Delhi-6, the title track, is a jumble of contemporary styles featuring the
Tamil rapper, BlaaZe. The song can be seen as an effort to try to capture
the two sides (both geographic and metaphorical) of the city in which the
movie is set. The north-central side, wherein lies Chandni Chowk, is known
for its crowded lanes, mosques and delicious Mughlai cuisine. The southern
part of the city, better known as New Delhi is just that: a hub of embassies
and gleaming government offices alongside the well-scrubbed façades of
five-star hotels and wide, tree-lined streets.

On Rehna Tu (You Stay) the producer leads the vocals in a duet with Tanvi
Shah. This track is typical Rahman in at least two senses. Firstly he is
known for appearing on at least one track on each of his albums and,
secondly, he is responsible for discovering a number of prominent Bollywood
playback singers, including Shah, with whom he first worked in 2004.

Genda Phool (Marigold Flower), meanwhile, is just beautiful. Rahman mixes
looped synthesised bass into a slow and simple Rajasthani folk song. It
sounds basic, but it is this kind of restrained fusion that sets him apart.
Indeed this has the subtle, contemporary appeal could place it squarely in
the Indian charts.

In short, this soundtrack is not for those looking for cliched Bollywood
music, which often involves little more than unimaginative beats designed
for actors to dance to, staidly remixed by popular DJs. Delhi-6 is in a
different class altogether. With its exploration of the delicate nuances of
South Asian classical music, it rewards careful listening. Whatever happens
at the Oscars we can expect Rahman to be more of a presence in the
international scene from now on, bringing his eastern sensibilities with him
and applying them to the music of the world.

[arr] selection system in oscars

And the Oscar Goes to...Not Its Voting System
Selection of Academy Award Nominees and Winners is Flawed, but
Reformers Can't Seem to Elect a Better Candidate
By CARL BIALIK

Academy Award nominees and winners are selected using two different
voting systems that are, according to some political mathematicians,
the worst way to convert voters' preferences into an election
outcome.

The nominees are selected using a system called instant runoff,
which has been adopted in some municipal and state elections. Out of
last year's 281 eligible films, each voter selects five nominees in
order of preference for, say, best picture. All movies without any
first-place votes are eliminated. The votes for those films with the
least first-place votes are re-assigned until five nominees have
enough.

One problem with that system is a kind of squeaky-wheel phenomenon:
A movie that is second place on every ballot will lose out to one
that ranks first on only 20% of ballots but is hated by everyone
else. Then, in another upside-down outcome, a movie can win for best
picture even if 79% of voters hated it so long as they split their
votes evenly among the losing films. This isn't as unfamiliar as it
sounds: Some people think Al Gore would have won the Electoral
College in 2000 if Ralph Nader hadn't diverted more votes from him
than he took from former President George W. Bush.

Getty Images"It's crazy," says Michel Balinski, professor of
research at École Polytechnique in Palaiseau, France. The nomination
system's properties are "truly perverse and antithetical to the idea
of democracy," says Steven Brams, professor of politics at New York
University. He thinks the final vote for the Oscar winner may be
even worse than the selection of nominees.

The big problem: If voting systems themselves were put to a vote,
prominent scholars would each produce a different ballot, then
disagree about which system should be used to select the winner. So
it's no surprise that advocates of alternate voting systems, which
range from simple yes/no approval ratings to assigning numerical
scores to each candidate, have had little more luck reforming
political elections than they have with entertainment awards.

Consider two systems that, on the surface, seem similar. Prof.
Balinski and mathematician Rida Laraki have devised a system they
call majority judgment that requires voters to rank each candidate
on a scale from 1 to 6. The votes are lined up in order, and each
candidate is assigned the middle, or median, score. The highest
median score wins. Another system, range voting, isn't that
different: The candidate with the highest average, or mean, score
wins.

Yet the second system's leading advocate, Warren D. Smith, co-
founder of the Center for Range Voting, has devoted a Web page to
the Balinksi-Laraki system's "numerous disadvantages."

Brace yourselves for "Ishtar" defeating "The Godfather." Suppose 49
voters award "The Godfather" six points and "Ishtar" only four. One
voter grants the desert debacle four points and the mafia
masterpiece three, and the remaining 49 award "The Godfather" three
points and "Ishtar" only one point. "Ishtar" actually wins with a
median score of four points compared to "The Godfather's" three
points. Prof. Balinski, in turn, calls range voting a "ridiculous
method," because it can be manipulated by strategic voters.

Despite the flaws in Oscars voting, the system remains as it has
since 1936. Every 15 years or so, the Academy re-examines its voting
and has decided to stick with it, says the Academy of Motion Picture
Arts and Sciences' executive director, Bruce Davis. "It is a very
effective method of reflecting the will of the entire electorate,"
Mr. Davis says.

But many voting theorists aren't so keen on the system. It's called
instant runoff because it is used in political elections in lieu of
a two-stage vote in which top candidates compete again if none
receives a majority of the vote. Among the potential problems,
showing up to vote for your favorite candidate may create a worse
outcome than not showing up at all. For example, your vote could
change the order in which candidates are eliminated, and the next-in-
line candidate on the ballot for the newly eliminated film may be a
film you loathe.

To choose Oscar winners, voters simply choose their favorite from
the nominees, and the contender with the most votes wins. That could
favor a film that has a devoted faction of fans, and sink films with
overlapping followings who split their vote. Even most critics of
instant runoff say it beats this plurality system that led to the
Gore-Nader-Bush result. In the film realm, Prof. Brams of NYU blames
the current system for the best-picture victory of "Rocky" over
films such as "Network" and "Taxi Driver" that he speculates would
have won head to head.

How this works out in reality is hard to know, because the Academy
doesn't release any detail

Re: Down to Earth by Peter Gabriel (Re: [arr] 'Slumdog' vs. 'Wall-E' for best song)

2009-02-11 Thread serge belier

Gomzy, I share your point of view. I am not pulling down the WALL-E song as I
said that both are elligible for a win, but when it comes for comparison, we
have to end saying which one is better to be able to vote. And I want ARR Sir
to win.

Truely, I think that ARR Sir has brought something different combinning indian
and western music, it is quite impossible for a western composer to come out
with this kind of indian/western score, this is the originality of ARR Sir. HE
has the background in both musical culture. (this could have been done also by
Talvin Singh, Nitin Sawney or Karsh Kale, and I would have appreciate similarly
if their music have been used in a film).

Honestly, even if I did not know that ARR Sir compose for SDM and if somebody
would have told me that it is done by another composer, I would have appreciate
it as I love fusion style (I like Talvin, Karsh, Nitin and other for this kind
of fusion).

To tell you the truth, at the beginning, when we discover SDM on this fan
group, someone said only 2 or 3 tracks were composed by ARR SIR (most of the
talks were on the "Ringa" song), and that the other were tracks from other
composed or other movies (like the one from DON by SEL). Knowing that, when I
first listen to Millionaire, Liquid Dance or Escape from the internet, I was
telling to myself "hope these tracks are from ARR, because I love them that
much". I was telling that to myself without too much insurance as ARR Sir never
did this kind of music in the past, and for me it was not his style of music.
And knowing Danny Boyle films, in which he usually uses old music from
different artists as he did in Trainspotting, I could not expect that tracks
like Millionaire, Liquid Dance or Escape are from ARR Sir. When I knew that all
tracks except the one from MIA (paper plane) and the one from DON, are from ARR
Sir, I can only rejoice myself.

This is to tell that even if we were not an ARR fan, we still would have
appreciate SDM, this soundtrack is really extraordinary, no doubts why the
world appreciate it. We should be very lucky to appreciate it more, being his
fans, it is a gift to us. No hesitation, I vote SDM songs and for a strategic
vote, I vote Jai Ho.

One last thing to conclude this mail, we always complain, even if something is
good, we still have negative critics, by doing that we don't realize that we
have something brilliant just in front of us right now. I think that's why we
always feel that past days were the best one, this is applicable for everything
in life, we always appreciate more past memories, old movies, old songs, old
feelings. We don't enjoy today's life. I have nothing against old things, I
also share the idea of "Old is Gold", but that 's not a reason for not
recognizing the present good values, joy, happiness, ... (some members of this
group also said once, that they like old ARR music; some others find new ARR
music as "average" when the CD just got out, the same find it excellent one
month after. Don't worry it happened also to myself many times. But now I still
apppreciate old songs which reminds me my chilhood and I also appreciate
today's music, because I am a music lover, I love all kind of music since there
is a melody in)

Sorry for my long mail, hope I did not hurt anyone, if I did I convey my
apologies (they are not intended).
Being a silent member for so long, I wanted to share with all of you my
thoughts on this specific subject in this specific time (only 12 days left for
the OSCAR results). I will be really really happy if ARR Sir win, he will win

5.0 out of 5 stars Really interesting enduring music-one of the
greater ones, January 7, 2009
By Lyn "musicolit" (Melbourne Australia) - See all my reviews
There is quite a mix of music styles woven here - from hiphop to
classical. Overall the flavor feels fresh and contemporary. There were
passages of music that were evocative, haunting and beautiful; other
catchy. It is full bodied and a lot of use is made of orchestra among
the electronics. A.R. Rahman composes quite different stuff from
others in Bollywood and again this is really good and very
interesting. I felt quite carried by it. as well as finding myself
humming tunes. I gather the movie itself didn't do well at the
box-office but the music was seen as a redeeming feature. Definitely
recommended.

ARR will win Oscars. Be optimistic.
Why are we all posting this negative material?
What are all these postings like..
"love ARR even though he doesnt win",
"Win or not, ARR continues to churn hits", etc..
We dont have to specially mention that we love him in any case.
This is not the time to go into defensive mode.
Lets be positive, he will definitely win Oscars for us..
We want to see him with two statuette.

[arr] Who is composing BGM for Delhi 6?

2009-02-11 Thread Dhruv Shenoy

BGMs are composed one month prior to the movie release, no chance of Rahman
composing the BGM for Delhi 6. The reason is known to you all. It is possible
for Rahman to resume work only after the academy awards. Will the fate of this
be same as Ghajini since Delhi 6 is said to be released on Feb 20th? So does
anyone know who is composing BGM for Delhi6 ?  Gomzy, VIthur ,Rawat anyone
please can you get the detail info on this...Thanks in advance.

[arr] Why does this happen????

2009-02-11 Thread Arvind Ar
Its always disheartening to see that many of the classics created by ARR ji for
experimentation movies goes in vain. More disheartening is the fact that many
Rahmaniacs themselves are caught unawares about many songs in these so called
"Art" movies..!!

Fire, Earth, Water, Meenaxi, Bose, Tehzeeb, Zubeidaa, to name a few have
all been ARR's career best works in them. Is it considered a taboo to praise
the art movie n music. Its high time atleast we Rahmaniacs prove this wrong!
and promote all the kind of music equally.! What say guys??

[arr] Re: The poet of "Darshan Do Ghanshyam" is ...

2009-02-11 Thread Vinod Raju

This is not a secret anymore, buddy. Its all over the place since
Dec.

Few of our fellow countrymen have taken pains to post this in
virtually every website which talks about SdM, including imdb and
rottentomatoes. Virtually every forum which discussed SdM also had
posts on this. Couple this with the systematic bashing of the film
and its crew including ARR from a select crowd, we can clearly see a
pattern aimed at felling SdM at the Oscars.

Guess this had to be expected, especially when the film is up
against The Reader, whose producer is notorious in the past for such
sabotage attempts.

I have a compilation of such posts and more, which I plan to post
somewhere after the Oscars are in SdM's kitty. :-)

Hi,

Panchaboothas are converted into Panchathan Mathra while it is mixing
with emptyspace according to the nature law.
Like the following.

Land -- Taste
Water -- Smell
Fire -- Light
Air -- Sound
Star -- Feel

This is the universal truth as my knowledge.

To be FRANK I must say that ARR was very busy, that he couldnt spend
much time in the BGMs of GHAJINI... I feel the TAMIL version has
SCINTILLATING BGMs...(Though inspired from various HOLLYWOOD scores)

YUVVRAAJ BGMs were the BEST of the YEAR... And they can only be composed by
ARR... I must say that the BGM score deserves an OSCAR for the BEST ORIGINAL
SCORE Atleast he shud win FILMFARE and NATIONAL AWARDS for the for the
GRAND SYMPHONIC BACKGROUND SCORE. Since the film FLOPPED at the BOX
OFFICEI fear whether they do justice

Ghajini BGMs were good and they were very much by ARR. When he can compose,
songs sitting in LOndon, Australia, why not compose BGMs sitting from
somewhere.

Its after all the notes, the way the tunes are fused, and the way in which
he brings about some new tunes, new music. and for the creative AR, place is
not at all a concern.

I think at present he is in Chennai, mixing the BGMs, and making it ready
for the release.

Re: [arr] What is the meaning of "Panchathan" ?

2009-02-11 Thread Moin Ul Haque
Panjatan (Panchatan) is very much holy over here.As usually its said as
Panch(five) Panjatan.
These are the 5 holy and much prominent figures in Islam (with reference to
Shia Islam).

Hazrat Prophet Mohammed [SAW]
Hazrat Bibi Syeda Fatima [R.A] (Prophet's (SAW) Daughter, wife of Hazrat Ali
[R.A] and mother of Imam Hasan [R.A]. and Imam Hussein [R.A])
Hazrat Ali [R.A] (Prophet's (SAW) cousin brother and his son-in-law, husband
of Bibi Syeda Fatima [R.A] and father of Imam Hasan [R.A] and Imam Hussein
[R.A] )
Imam Hasan [R.A] (Grandson of Prophet (SAW) and elder son of Hazrat Ali
[R.A.] and Bibi Syeda Fatima [R.A] )
Imam Hussein [R.A] (Grandson of Prophet (SAW) and youngest son of Hazrat
Ali [R.A.] and Bibi Syeda Fatima [R.A] and younger brother to Imam Hasan
[R.A]. who was as martyr in the battle at Karbala and in whose rememberance
the 10th Day of Moharram is celebrated as Martyr's Day)

Hope this makes sense in ARR's thoughts of spirituality and this seems to be
the name given by his spiritual teacher Arif Malik (AM),
This is according to me what i take Panchatan as, which makes more sense.

Thanks

That is it. I was also thinking on this line.

Today, if any oscar jury has to pic an English Song to hear to, or vote
to, which one would we pick? there are hundreds of great English songs
that they must have liked and have enjoyed umpteenth time. Would it be
father figure or careless whisper, or everything i do, or it must have
been love, or quit playing games, or old - money, money, money, or
latest heart will go on, and many more.

So there. How much ever good it may be. It is good but it doesn't
measure up to the standards of English music.

But, when oscar jury hear that a song has emerged from the land of
philosophy and peace and love and of tajmahal and is trying to reach the
international audience, they are likely to help this song in its
struggle, especially because there is a possibility that these songs and
score could be a rare "single album wonder" by some whizkid and no other
song or album comes this far in a long future. (It is not so, but get
the possible flow of thoughts.)

SDM has an emotional appeal. It is a survivor's movie. Anybody having
seen it gets soft feelings towards the cast and towards the film.

With this logic, I personally feel that Oscar voters would be in favor
of SDM.

Why don't we ask our "whys" when a badly made movie like Mangal Pandey

Why don't we ask our "whys" when a small budget film made by an unknown

[arr] Why The BAFTA Is So Special For A R Rahman

2009-02-11 Thread Vithur
Why The BAFTA Is So Special For A R Rahman

*By Subhash K Jha, In some ways BAFTA was more special than any of the other
Slumdog awards so far.*

It also has to do with the sudden coming-of-age of Indian
music.

Says Rahman, "For 18 years I've been hearing it will happen now, it will
happen now. It didn't happen with some of my earlier efforts like the staged
musical Bombay Dreams. Finally Indian music has gone international. And
frankly, the expectations scare me."
On Tuesday Rahman returned from London to Chennai for just a day before
heading to Los Angeles for the Oscars.

Says Rahman, "Danny, Dev Patel and the crew are all Britishers. To be
honoured back home is another high altogether. For me also, London is like a
second home. I've been coming here since 1996. It's my favourite city
outside India. And to be getting the BAFTA is special."

Rahman thinks the popularity of his Slumdog score has a lot to do with the
fate of the overall product. "It's the entire product that audiences have
liked , and my music is part of that product. My song Jai ho has touched a
chord because of the way it has been used. It comes at the end as a
cathartic eruption of song song dance and happiness. That's the spirit in
which people have received my music."

Rahman looks back on his life after Slumdog with some amazement. "It's been
like a rollercoaster ride for one and a half months. The Oscar will be the
culmination of the whirlwind of activities. Are people back home looking at
me with expectations? I hope I don't let them down. I feel God has already
given me much more than I ever expected."

Down to Earth by Peter Gabriel (Re: [arr] 'Slumdog' vs. 'Wall-E' for best song)

2009-02-11 Thread jayram.M.N
Hey,

Does'nt the song Jai Ho slightly resemble the song by A.R.R in Tamil
"Ellaappugazhum.."

http://www.hummaa.com/search/search.php?
tp=song&lg=14&vl=Ellaappugazhum

I liked the songs for his message, beats and amazing lyrics.

why silent ? I think this should be a audible group prayer.
The power of a thousand voices all praying in unison around the globe is
incredible.
which god will be unmoved by this harmony ?
which god will dare not to manipulate the votes that may have already
happened ?

I appreciate the sentiment,
but frankly this is getting ridiculous.

[arr] Cinematographers praise 'Slumdog'

Cinematographers praise 'Slumdog'

D.p.s sound off on year's most compelling work
By ROBERT KOEHLER

Unanimous praise was heaped on 'Slumdog Millionaire.'

Cinematographers praise 'Slumdog'
D.p.s sound off on year's most compelling work
02/10/2009

Few if any groups in the film business are as famously collegial as
cinematographers: It's not for nothing that the American Society of
Cinematographers' Hollywood headquarters is dubbed "The Clubhouse."
So what do some of the high achievers in this small, tight circle --
some of them Oscar nominees and winners -- think of their peers'
work in 2008? What images remained in their minds days, weeks,
months after viewing?

If a highly unscientific survey of a handful of cinematographers is
any indication, one trend continues to hold stubborn traction:
It's "Slumdog Millionaire's" world, and the rest of us are just
living in it.

Anthony Dod Mantle, the British-born d.p. whose intensely colored,
half-digital, half-film work on "Slumdog" has become the cherry on
top of a career as the cameraman of choice for the Dogma 95 group of
Danish directors (Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg, among
others), is easily the most mentioned name, along with a notably
large representation of other European-based peers.

Work on studio films lagged far behind in the mentions; as Oscar-
winning "There Will Be Blood" cinematographer Robert Elswit puts
it, "There wasn't much work out of Hollywood this year that grabbed
anybody."

Along with Elswit, opinions are sampled from his fellow Oscar
nominees from 2007: Roger Deakins ("No Country for Old Men," "The
Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" and with a
new nom, shared with Chris Menges, for "The Reader"), Janusz
Kaminski ("The Diving Bell and the Butterfly") and Seamus McGarvey
("Atonement") as well as two-time Oscar nominee and Camerimage
lifetime achievement award winner Stephen Goldblatt.

The international span of this group of five is reflected in a
remarkably global range of choices, which in turn reflects that
world-class cinematography is now being practiced worldwide.

Mantle's "Slumdog" was "the biggest technical achievement of the
year," says Deakins, "because even though part of the film was shot
on a 2K digital camera and part on 35mm, my eye could never detect
the difference. Even though there's a stark difference in the visual
information and resolution between the two, with 35 still much
greater than 2K, it was quite a feat to maintain a consistent
quality of image throughout."

Adds Kaminski: "I like cinematography that feels alive, and
Anthony's work felt that way for me. The shooting got the sense of
the Mumbai streets, the reality of the gameshow, the nostalgia of
the romance."

Goldblatt agrees, noting that "Slumdog" was "a very adventurous mix
of media, fun and beautiful and very courageous. I've worked in
India as a photographer and know how tough it is there, so I was
quite impressed with the results."

McGarvey "loved how Anthony thought about how the various formats he
shot in would serve each milieu in the story, so that the images
never patronized the characters. It was such a ride."

Atlast.which is the one I am admiring for a very long long time has
strucked in our Rahmaniacs mind.

There is not doubt out that ARR is the reincarnation of Swami Vivekananda.

You know guys, Swami Vivekananda is very well knowledged in Indian Classical
Music. But he dedicated his life to uplift the country.

Certainly ARR is followed by many people in their livesLong Live ARR

sribalaji

Thanks Rakesh. This heartening, and AR inspires us to be socially
responsible.

His humanitarian principles, the human values that he believes and follows
makes him more , more, more lovable.

Music comes later. The MAN is more loveable, adorable, respectful always.

In short, we can say " His LIfe Is His Message"

Hail ARR..

For the First time in the History of SUN TV, they announced that

" IN the History of Indian Cinema, a brand new movie, in the music of
A.R.Rahman... ".

Never does SUn tv announce the name of Music Directors , while advertising the
telecast timing of the movie..

Subhash Ghai surprised over YUVVRAAJs entry to Oscar Library

Subhash Ghai's YUVVRAAJ has just garnered the most prestigious honour from
the Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences for including
YUVVRAAJ as a part of the Oscar Library. The script will be part of the core
collection which is made available for film makers, writers, actors and
students worldwide for their research work.

The merits of this selection are not based on box office performance of the
film but mainly on the artistic merits, original screenplay with a substance
and the film as a whole.

''Of course the selection of the script of YUVVRAAJ came as a surprise to me
but surely an honour which no one can deny. Let's say it is my consolation
prize of my hard work.'' said a smiling Subhash Ghai

The screenplay of YUVVRAAJ has been jointly written by Subhash Ghai, Kamlesh
Pandey and Sachin Bhowmick, with the story & dialogue by Subhash Ghai with
actors Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Zayed Khan. The music was
composed by A.R Rahman while lyrics are written by Gulzar.

Ok Bro. Agreed. Friday Morning 8 AM i.e. Tomorrow is dedicated for ARR.

Lets Pray.

I said 'silent' only because at 8 AM in the morning if you are at office or in
the bus...its your choice whether to do it silently or not..

I stress the Prayer.. thats it.

thx.

why silent ? I think this should be a audible group prayer.
The power of a thousand voices all praying in unison around the globe is
incredible.
which god will be unmoved by this harmony ?
which god will dare not to manipulate the votes that may have already happened ?

I appreciate the sentiment,
but frankly this is getting ridiculous.
