 COMMENTS http://www.outlookindia.com/article.aspx?266982#comments

Anthems are devised to make your spirit soar. When they crashland, they can
also leave you sore. For some time now, A.R. Rahman has been on song. This
time the song is on him. His anthem *`Jiyo, Utho, Badho, Jeeto*' takes all
of four minutes and 16 seconds to expose you to the perils of skydiving
without a parachute. But then, this is the anthem for the 2010 Commonwealth
Games and, like many other things connected with this year's CWG, it happens
to be just another kind of cruel sport.

The idea of an anthem for sporting events is, it could be argued, to
foreground a consistent theme as a focal point of the event and to unify the
audiences with the adhesive of a familiar, infectious rhythm. In the present
context of a CWG mired in debilitating controversy and hint of sleaze, a
rousing anthem could have been the talisman to unlock some positive energy.

But the present offering of India's own Mozart, which was launched with much
fanfare on August 23, has left even the Group of Ministers unhappy. That
must be the ultimate ignominy for a composer—that aesthetic cynicism of such
crass proportions can even affect the GoM, although one suspects it was not
so much the notations on the music sheet but those on the bill that did the
 damage.

Even as Oscar hero Rahman was concatenating, at super-speed, his CWG jingle
that jangles with some of the most pedestrian verses in recent times, he
also fed in the punchy figure of some Rs 1.37 crore per minute of the song.
Total: Rs 5.50 crore. In 2006, for the inaugural functions of the Frankfurt
Book Fair, at which India was the `Guest of Honour Country', a proposal by
music composer Ilaiyaraja to present a Carnatic raga using a 120-piece
Western philharmonic orchestra was summarily rejected because of the price
tag of Rs 95 lakh. But times have changed.

The funny thing about Rahman's *Swagatham* number this time is that, after
its recitative first part, with lines as stiff and strangulating as `*Junoon
se, kanoon se, maidaan maar lo*', the second performative segment breaks
into a beat that sounds like a rip-off of his own composition `*Ramta Jogi*'
in the film *Taal*. Obviously, Rahman is now famous enough to plagiarise
himself and even charge us for it. But the obvious question that needs to be
asked is: why did he even try? Why did he not simply offer back the
 same `*Ramta
Jogi*' as the anthem for the CWG? The song has all the right foot-tapping
ingredients, including oblique references to playful charlatans that would
have blended well with the CWG.

Of course, Rahman's anthem cannot be disconnected with the overall plan for
inaugural and closing ceremonies of the CWG. The fancy committee for the
inaugural events has for a few months now been grappling with the logistics
of how to present India in this highly televised event. It is a committee in
search of a spectacle. The spectacle of a fake, make-believe India populated
with Bollywood dancers and swirling silks, crooning divas and simpering
starlets. The last time around, they were thinking of making a
sound-and-light show using the sacred `Om'.

It is an India that has no specific location on this planet and is far
removed from not just the lives, but even the fantasies, of its own people.
This is an India that is the pet project of its numerous, prospering robber
barons, who are enabled, time and again,

Thanks for the email but We are not any over reacting..
If we walk across the streets of Delhi holding the placards
and blocking the traffic, then you may call it over reaction.

It is not about good reviews or bad reviews about ARR's song..
We have always been receptive to constructive criticism..in this cwg
case it is not even about the composition.. it is okay if they
dont like the song.. but they didnt stop there.. they lost control over
themselves, thrown everywhere and went ahead commenting and
questioning ARR's commitment..
Thats when they started go get under our skin.
How are they talking about the money and the result?
If they give ARR only a rupee, do they expect him to
be committed worth only a rupee? And they kept commenting that ARR
became overconfident after Oscars and Grammies and all..

Do you think all this bad commentary is same as some movie critic
writing about how Jodha Akbar is not in the league of Moghul E Azam?

Things can be either good, bad or average - and each one of us normally try
to judge a song based on these three broad categories.

I appreciate we are all ARR fans and would lay our lives for him if situation
arise - but for a moment, think neutrally, think objectively. Its only a
feedback, only a review about one of his several compositions. The reason
media or politicians are vocal about it is because its an event of that
level. I know at times, we all get too swayed , even emotionally in each of
his works, and try to straighten things even for the smallest remark made for
him. But do you not think, that for him, as true fans, we should be neutral,
unbiased and honest in our review. I guess, this will be more appreciated by
him rather than being too much overhelmed with everything he composes! The
moot point is why are we taking everything to a very personal level, where
the reviews are about the tracks and not about ARR, the person!

I have been a die hard fan of him since Roja and have always been very
patient and objective before jumping to conclusions. I heard this for many
many times, in my own sweet time and it didn't click me, no big deal! Its not
a bad song..just that I felt it didn;t fit the CWG ambience - CWG theme.

I only want to request all of you not to make a big deal about it. Reviews
will always be there - good or bad. If you liked it, well, good. If you
didn't nothing is lost. I would rather be upfrontly honest then have two
layers in my mind - just becos I have been a fan for many years?

Same argument for all the reviews - we all start micro-analysing the
reviewer, track down his history, his poor skills, and everything! I strongly
believe (and have put this statment earlier too - that music and for that
matter any form of art, is a subjective field. Someone will always like it
and someone will always find it less beautiful. Its not a cricket match to
 either win or lose!

Not sure how many of you would agree with me, so chill, look forward to

who came to their rescue, it is He who specially addressed
the press meet supporting the CWG committe saying that they
have been working hard..lot of hard work is going into it and
be positive and be supportive to them.
And now the CWG and the media itself is going against ARR
accusing him of not giving a shakira material, about the money
and went to such an extent questiioning ARR's commitment.
Not showing gratitude is one thing but going after ARR calling him
names is totally uncalled for..
How are they comparing soccer to these games?

They will expect ARR to compose like a Shakira even for

Swagatham fiasco: Rahman's top 10 duds

The verdict is in. 'Swagatham', A R Rahman's anthem for the Commonwealth
Games, has received anything but rapturous welcome.

People who have heard it are cool, downloads are flat, music professionals
are looking away – even politicians are denouncing the song.

The slow-paced number, sung by Rahman himself, has got everyone wondering
whether this is what the Games deserves.

  Poll

Why does the CWG anthem Swagatham not work for you?
  Slow-paced
  Lacks punch
  Style of Rahman is missing

While everyone may wonder what went wrong, it's worth remembering that
Rahman, for all his apparent Midas touch with melody, has had his share of
duds. Unfortunately, the tune that the nation was looking forward to has
turned out to be one of them.

Some of the songs Rahman composed in his early years for Malayalam and
  Telugu films have remained unpopular.

Fans who have grown used to the trademark Rahman style over the years have
also complained the composer is repeating himself.

Towering expectations of the man dubbed Mozart of Madras of repeating
the legendary success of `Roja' in every film may have also led to a slump
  in quality in some soundtracks.

I've heard better from Rahman, was the common sentiment on the streets
when Jai Ho received international acclaim.

Here, then, are Rahman's top 10 dud soundtracks from a musical career
spanning almost 20 years – songs that have either bombed at the charts or
simply faded from memory for lack of fizz:

  1. 'Swagatham': A nation, eagerly awaiting its own `Waka Waka' from its
trusted composer, is bitterly disappointed at the outcome of
the Commonwealth Games anthem. Critics call it a cacophony while fans
  find the punch missing.

  2. 'Raavan': The music of Raavan is dark and appeals to specific
audiences. One of the most anticipated films of 2010, Rahman brings in
contemporary techno and marries it off to Punjabi folk creating tracks
like `Thok de killi' that lack the hummability of `Behne de' or its
  staying power.

  3. 'Fire': Rahman composed the background score for Deepa Mehta's Fire. It
had the appeal of any Rahman classic but failed to leave a mark in India
as the soundtrack was available only through mail order from a German
  company.

  4. 'Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya': Rahman's Tamil album comes after a hiatus of
two years and disappointed fans say the songs lack character.

  5. 'Parasuram': Rahman tries to experiment with lyrics in `Jack and Jill'
and the effect is disastrous. Fans trash the music of this 2003 starrer
and `Dolna Dolna' is the only song that leaves a mark in an album that has
  songs sung by Hariharan.

  6. 'Jeans': After a decade, `Ajooba' sang by Hariharan is the only Jeans
soundtrack that sticks with audiences. Beautiful lyrics by Javed Akhtar
and Hariharan's lilting vocals failed to move traditional Rahman fans
looking for more than just instrumental fusions and contemporary
  background score.

  7. 'Mr. Romeo': This Prabhu Deva starrer had

Opposition - The name itself says Opposition, what more can one expect from

Media - Not every day they get a chance to publish a news against Rahman.
 Just
to show that they are not partial to Rahman in everything he does, they are
publishing these kind of articles. So they are using this opportunity to
criticize his work by asking opinions about this song from every tom, dick

Government - Some of them from Govt are using media to convey their
 displeasures
about this song. Why? To divert the attention from other important
things(incomplete venues etc etc) and make ARR and the song the scapegoat.
 After
all, they are the easy targets you see.

So called Senior Music Composers - Firstly, they can't digest the fact that
 why
only Rahman was asked to compose a theme song and why they were not...and the
most hurting factor for them is the price tag that is floating around for
 that
 song..

Fans - Nothing new with these poor fellows...Some of them have genuine
 reasons
for their dislike and others are still in 90's mode. They still refuse to
believe that Rahman is a human being. They want Roja's and Thiruda Thiruda's
 all
the time..and when Rahman gives them the album with 90's touch, they say
 that
the song is outdated and Rahman has lost his touch...

Just my opinion...not to hurt any one...

[arr] expectations

2010-08-26 Thread Raghu
Been seeing so many emails expressing their disappointment on
one or other recent arr albums.. that is perfectly alright but
I am just trying to understand your expectations..

I have been with Arr's music for a good 2 decades if we include jingles
and other misc work Arr has done for television..
Most of his compositions are masterpieces..right, but
the thing about Arr's composition is that if not the whole song,
at least there will always be something special about the composition at least
in a bit here or there or pallavi or charanam or ..it might be just the way
maestro uses the chorus or an instrument or weaving of an interlude or voice
modulation or something.
Such special sparks here and there are enough to give me enough
pleasure to continue hearing and keep waiting for the next album.
With respect to arr's efforts so far I never failed to see his sincerity,
dedication and his craftsmanship in any of his works.

Even though Arr is an absolute music wizard, I cannot possibly expect
him to produce song after song to blew me away completely continuously.

Actually after 18 years of creative output even today at least one or two songs
in his every new release
make me think that may be this is one of the arr's finest work..
felt so with yeh jo de hai tera, terebina, newyork, mausam and escape,
dil ka rista, kwaja, kaise mujhe, animal spirits, puthiya manitha, plenty
more..

Even in puli - which became a victim of many critics, arr surprised me with his
creativity in ammathalle, his idea of mixing rap and melody in dochey and his
expression in nammakam.

Only wondering to know .. are Arr's recent compositions soo bad to you that you
dont find even a single chorus piece or an instrument or anything that interest
you? Isnt there anything special at all?
How about try to point out what is that you liked and what is
that you did not like.
Doesnt it help Arr understand your expectations better than
if we just say oh utter dissappointment, there is no soul no soup?

I do not know about others but I am very happy with whatever He gives.
By the way, whoever said that even many new composers can do a puthiya manitha,
I have difficulty agreeing with that opinion.. but hay..you are welcome to
express!

Regards
Raghu

Comparing ARR's work with HR's is absolutely ridiculous.
Looks like you are not observing the instruments, structure,
orchestra, chorus, genres, fusion and such..
You just want it to be sweet and catchy thats all.

Music as an Art is not always only about melody...there are

substance, creativity, packaging..
ARR is a bigger artist than he is a musician.
Song ARR creates is a piece of art.

from sheer brilliance of the music. But what I got was songs that were at
best brilliant at some point in bits and pieces.

But, boy oh boy, I couldnt be more wrong.

Many have spoken of ar rahman songs as slow poisons. I have also
experienced it many times before. But this time, the effect is far more

I am now singing a different tune. I now feel that Endhiran is one of Ar

It must seem as though I am overly exaggerating. But this is how I honestly
  feel.

Why the sudden change in opinion you may ask?

Well, I dont know exactly why. Its as though my brain has started to
finally tune in to the right frequency.

Its as though I have finally come to a realization or an awakening to the
genius. The Endhiran songs brilliance were revealed to me one layer at a

I am at loss for words. I cant seem to express my thoughts clearly in words
but the music is brilliant guys.

Music composed with the Super Star, The Robot element and Shankars grand
vision in mind with plenty of magic all over.

Melody, Groove, Rap, Techno all mixed into a concotion of such potent
musical brilliace that Tamil music has never seen or heard before.

I truly believe that many will come to experience the bliss of realization
of the magic in Endhiran music once they are ready for it. Some realize it
earlier and some will realize later. Everyone is different and will have to
go through the process themselves to discover the magic.

But without doubt, once the movie is released every one of us will be
  hooked to the songs.

At the beginning, many would only hear the beats and noisy sounds. But
slowly the melody will reveal itself to our senses. And the combination of
melody and modern grooves will bring us to a new experience in tamil music.

I cant only wonder what will happen when the movie comes out and we get to
see the visuals together with the music.

  Cant wait for that moment.

Keep listening guys. May the magic be revealed to you soon.

Subject: [arr] Phani Kalyan about AR Rahman KMMC
 To: arrahmanfans arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com
 Date: Wednesday, August 11, 2010, 10:48 PM

There are certain experiences in life that change you as a person and
help you grow into a better individual. For me, these defining
experiences happened during those years that I was a student of AR
 Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory.

As I look back on that journey that has evolved me into making music
my life and profession I feel KMMC happened a little late in my life
but I strongly feel it couldn't have come at a more right moment than
this. I had a keen interest in music since childhood, listening along
with my grandfather to his thousands of carnatic collections including
M.Balamuralikrishna, Thyagaraja, Ramadas, and many Annamayya
Keerthanas and instrumentals. I recall composing rough tunes for fun,
even before I started learning music formally. But it wasn’t until AR
Rahman happened, that my passion for music grew beyond words. I became
a devout fan of Rahman Sir ever since Bombay had released. I remember
skipping my school continuously to go to the theatre where Bombay was
being played just to listen to the music and the background scores.
And with each of his releases after that, his music became a daily
 fuel for me.

I had completed my Engineering degree in Chennai and was working a
mundane software job. Of course, my body was there, but my ears, mind
and thoughts were just tunes, melodies, rhythm and one man- AR Rahman.
So when I heard news that Rahman Sir was going to open his own music
school here in Chennai, which offers courses in western classical
music, various areas of music technology, instruments, and vocals, I
thought to myself, “If I wanted to give my passion for music a chance
to grow and give a chance to live my dream-job as a composer, THIS was
it.” And what better opportunity to learn at an institution developed
by a man who I worshipped and looked up to for so many years. So
without hesitation I applied for an audition. Now I wasn’t at all sure
I would get in and did not even tell my family or anyone else about
applying to the school. I thought to myself by auditioning I would at
least catch a glimpse of the school and studio, and if lucky catch a
glimpse of Rahman Sir. So I was super surprised and was just in utter
disbelief when I got that call of acceptance and my family was even
more shocked when I told them that I am going to resign my job and
join KMMC. So here I was literally on cloud 9, about to begin a
journey that I had only dreamt of all these years.

In KMMC I took western classical vocals and composition as a major
with a prior knowledge in carnatic vocals and keyboard. As soon as I
entered the conservatory compound on the first day, I could just feel
the aura of positive energy all around. The school had almost like a
homely and soothing atmosphere with wooden floors and furniture,
accented with warm curtains, large middle-eastern rugs, a beautiful
grand piano and a picture of Rahman sir's father in the main reception
area. More than this it was my fellow classmates from all corners of
the world, and the amazing faculty that made those years the most
 memorable.

Moreover, being part of KMMC I saw Rahman Sir in a whole different
light, and my respect and devotion towards him grew to infinite
lengths. During the first week he came and interacted with us in
person and asked us our ambitions and goals. I still remember when I
asked Sir at that time to hum a few lines of New York Nagaram, what he
said in response will forever stay with me. He said. Guys don't stick
only onto New York Nagaram, music is beyond the regular commercial
cinema. Make your mark, aim at the moon..at least you will reach the
stars .I was amazed at the fact that no matter how busy he was, he
used to attend almost every student recital and concert that we used
to have at KM. He used to listen to us patiently and give us
suggestions, advice and clarifications on any doubts we had with so
much patience. And in case he was unable to make it to an event, he
used to send us a sorry note. I was just amazed that a man who is such
a prominent society figure, a pioneer

rap was fit in perfectly... very intelligently crafted.

Boy he has definitely enjoyed doing this song.

ARR is awesome in telugu in Inumulo O Hrudayam..
I think for this particular song he actually sounded better than
the tamil version Irumbile..
specially when he sings..
poovaasanakochaadu; manmadhudai vachaadu..

Oo maramanishi / pudhiya manitha is a clear winner..
grand, innovative; SPB is perfect and Khatija is equally
soothing and innocent.
Wonder why is SPB missing in hindi version.

It is interesting to see how ARR switched the male and
female tunes in charanam-1 to female and male tunes in charanam-2
of kilimanjaro.

PS: If I dont see the name, I might mistake Khatija for Harini
15 years back.

do you have plans to make a story for Hrithick?

Director KV: ARRahman once mentioned in the print media that He wants to work
with me; it shows their kindness towards fellow artists.
Those artists already have a certain image in the public;
It does not make sense to include them in my movie just because they want to
work with me, I will have to wait for a right story, right project such that it
enhances their current image.
We must be able to do justification to the artists through a befitting project.
As of now, I do not have any such project in my mind but we do not know what
happens in the future.

The anchor asked about Hrithik and it is interesting to see
the Director answering her by voluntaryly refering to ARR.

2010-07-12 Thread Raghu
hi, pretty happy for puli.
is it my temperary crappy system or is there some noise in
amma thalle song specially when naresh iyer starts?
I am playing original CD.
by the way, nammakame is easily one of arr's alltimes bests.

i've been hooked to puli for the past 12 hours and i have to admit that all
the songs have atleast one addictive tune which just creates an amazing
feeling everytime i hear it. for example, the way maham maye starts (lyrics
portion), guitar strings in dochey song; chorus part in maralante song,
almost every aspect in amma thale song, entire execution of powerstar
 execution etc.

OMG! terrffic stuff. brilliantly produced. tune, vocals and orchestration
(chorus, additional programming etc) is undoubtedly superior. however, the
percussion / beat part in almost all the songs is purely conventional
instead of being exceptional. yeah, i know m being very picky.

i have to mention that hearing shreya, shwetha mohan, tanvi, chitra ji,
naresh mellifluous voice (including ARRs) is an absolute privilege. well
done ARR on presenting their voices as it should be.

Feast? Yes. The high point of Mani Ratnam's film is primarily its visual
opulence. The film is literally a work of art where one luminescent frame
follows another as the scenes keep shifting from one wet and rocky landscape
to another misty mountainscape. You can't seem to get enough of the montages

2010-06-16 Thread Raghu
Those of you planning to attend this Jai Ho tour in any venue..
Just want to hint you that the whole setup - the arrangement of stage,
projection, slides,
gantry, ramp are such that the experience is maximum for straight
viewers.
One does not have to buy an expensive ticket but whatever it is,
try to find as straight view as possible.
This show is unlike other regular shows - distance is not a problem,
angle will be and is; you can still enjoy from the side seats but at a
compromized level..
I was at 45 degrees and did not even realize what have I missed till I
came home and looked at some of the pictures online and felt depressed.
I am not comfortable with the idea of somebody thinking about the
show as average just because of the seats.
But ofcourse we all know that ARR is about sound.

But you know what, this format is actually worser than super audio CD. I
just called an expert friend and asked over international line and he says
DTS music CD was a joke, it never really boosted anything major and the fact
that they comply to the 'red book' standard* ( Red book standard is THE

The codec is a failure because most players could not recognize the
track separators and either said invalid disc or read the whole thing as one

 tracks..

Those who have Boys or Godfather DTS disc as you claim, please do this test

If you are playing in 5.1 surround sound system, please disconnect the

My family keeps me creatively charged: Rahman

Composer A.R. Rahman plans to be out of India for the longest period for a
series of world concerts and says he is not thinking about any other work

“It’s a very tough schedule for me this year. I’ll be out of the country
for five months, which I’ve kept aside completely for the word tour,” Rahman
 told *IANS*.

The concerts will take Rahman to places he has never been before.

“I essentially need time for my music, spirituality and family. Everything
else is secondary. We’ll be going to remote places in Europe, the Far East
and America. I’ll be touring from this month (March 2010). This would be my
longest tour ever and I’m not thinking of any other work,” said the
 composer.

Rahman admits time management is a problem.

“But you have to prioritise your time and do what you must. For example, I
know I’ve to be away for five months this year. So it’d be foolish of me to
commit myself to anything until I finish my concerts.”

Rahman says it’s a blessing to work out of his home.

“My family is always around me. I think that’s what keeps me creatively
charged. When I travel, I crave to return. My kids are growing up. It’s
important that they see their father regularly. Or they’ll soon start
 calling me uncle.”

Rahman has just done a soundtrack for a Tamil film directed by Gautam
 Menon.

“Then I’ve Mani Ratnam’s *Raavan* and Abbas Tyrewala’s *1-800-Love* Also
Shekhar Kapoor’s *Paani*, which is a very important film. But with the
world tour on, will I have the time?”

Clarifying doubts about his age, he said: “I was born in 1967, so it’s my
43rd birthday (in January this year). I am an old man now. Do I feel older?
It’s a good feeling. I’m heading towards the place where all of us are
destined to. You are born and then one day you die. So my policy in life is
to do what I want to do today, not tomorrow. If I want to do good things in
life I better do them now.”

2010-01-25 Thread Raghu B P
Sighh. Finally VTV has got into me, it has got into my blood, sleep,
dream, breathe everything. The first time I heard it, I was like WTH is
this, but I have always liked ARR stuff that I hate initially as I tend to
love it later on. I just dont go on listening to it if I dont like, here is
what I do.

1) Listen initially for a couple of times, since most of the stuff is so
new, especially the structuring nothing comes to my lips.
2) Stop listening for a few days and then unknowingly I will start humming
something from the album.
3) So I go back to CD and listen again. At this point something registers in
mind and I start humming a few bits and pieces again.

thats it, I just repeat the step1 to step3 and it gets into me full time.

that case, I have continuously listened to that songs for more than 6 months
[Even after the release of some other AR's album], and didn't get carried

As days passed by modern technologies such as iPods came in a normal play

Hi guys,

After reading a few -ve reviews from some reputed blogs [some went to
the extent of calling a few track's Pritamish and VS style]. I thought of
skipping the sound track. Last week saw a few trailers on TV and thought of
giving the soundtrack a shot [after all I am a huge ARR fan]. Went to a
planetm shop and enquired says Sold out, I thought crappy sound track and
sold out:)? Visited another planetm shop a week later and bought the CD, the
CD was placed in the top rack of the stand, means currently best selling
album [crap album is no 1 on sales chart :)].

With a lot of -ve thoughts started playing the cd. Belive me for the first
time in years, I am totally satisfied with an ARR album. Each and every song
is awesome. My fac tracks Aye Bacchoo and Lattoo .

The thing is i think i can help some people.
Without being condescending i believe that BOSE as a headphone is
great compared to your creatives,i pod free-bees,and the likes.
However, the general perception in audiophile circles is that BOSE is a
overpriced toy.By the way, any noise cancellation is deemed highly
distortive(because the artificial noise cancellation interferes with
the original frequencies). In any case, the point is that for the price
you pay for BOSE you are likely to find much better sounding
headphones than the Goliath. Also BOSE is not the pinnacle of sound
reproduction as the myth surrounding it around here suggests.Ask a
good DJ and you will know.

 To the more important point,
This dossier is a good starting point for people looking at headphones.
Less than 2000: buy Koss KSC75(better than QC3).
For 5k to 12-15k try Grados SR series, medium priced Shures ,
 Audio Technica wooden series etc.
 For more expensive ones under 25 k try HD595 600 650.Denons,bayer
dynamics, ultimate ears or shure(for in ear).
under 30K-50k you can get grados GS/HP series or ultrasone.Ofcourse
you will enter STAX/Sony RS1 here and go on till 3 lakhs in STAX.

But for the best headphones like the HDs or grados amplifiers are a
must. All headphones worth more than 15 k are just as good as the Music
you listen to.The best headphones needs the best amps and the best
source to create the best music.

For senheissers i would suggest you little dot or dark voice
amplifiers. If money is not a constraint look at stuff like zana deux.
In any case if you are looking at spending 15 k you would do better
than to look at a mail like this. Try headfi.org. The singular site
 for audiophiles.

For people looking to shred me to pieces i accept that i have very
little knowledge in this area. But i've studied
enough to know that regardless of the knowledge, one has one likely to
get the same advice even from a pro.

 Aditya.

Hello All,

It's been a long time since I posted here.

Recently started listening to Iruvar after a very long time, almost
10 years. Amazing album, an absolute classic. It's strange that I did
not like it 10 years ago, I was very disappointed then, but now I have
fallen in love with it. May be I did not like it then because I was 20
years old :) but now as I have grown older and married :), I am able
to connect with them, believe me I don't understand a word in tamil.
But the songs in Iruvar have a soothing effect.

Talk about overflowing pessimism :)

Apparently, music is now appreciated more on what is the name of the
singer, rather than how the song is made and sung! To make
pre-judgements about anything is obviously going to bias your overall
appreciation of anything. As its said, don't judge a book by its cover!

FYI, as previously stated, Bappi Lahari is a very talented individual.
Melodious numbers from Manzilen apni jagah hai (Sharaabi) to Pag
Ghungroo band (Namak Halal) to Chalte Chalte (title) to Chookar mere
man ko (Yaarana) -- all are touching melodies that will last forever!
Do you really question the judgement of Rahman in chosing Bappi?

Re: [arr] T.L. Maharajan on ARR- A great story!

Thanx for sharing buddy.Love ArrRaghu- Original Message From: mmparthi2003 [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.comSent: Sunday, 30 April, 2006 8:25:13 PMSubject: [arr] T.L. Maharajan on ARR- A great story! Hey guysI was watching the Raagamaalika show on Jaya Tv and the judge for today was T.L Maharajan (Not sure of the initials).Anyways for the second round there is a duet round. So one of the singers chose the song "Nee Kattum Selai Madipilai" from Pudiya Mannargal. This song was originally sung by T.L Maharajan(TLM) himselfand Sujatha. So after the song was sung he mentioned an incident he will never forget in his life regarding
this song. This is how it goes: After he sang this song for Rahman and after leaving the recording studio he felt that this song wasnt challenging at all and thought well why did Rahman give such an easy and not very exciting song to him. Maybe he didnt like him or something. And he felt a bit dissapointed. Then later after the movie and songs were released and all, Maharajan had a show in Singapore. So while in singapore one day he just had his lunch or somethgin and thought of going for a walk on the streets. While walking, there was a Barrota(Paratha) shop and the guy who was making the Barotha was hitting the dough on the surface for a tune. For every beat on the song that was playing this guy was hitting the dough on the surface. So TLM was bit curious to knwo what this song was and why is it so special that this guy whos making the Barotha is enjoying himself and forgetting the wholeworld around him simply listening to this song. When he
went closer he realised that this was his very own song he sang and disliked which was "Nee Kattum Selai Madipilai". He was simply amazed and he went and asked the person do u like this song and all and the person had said:"this is the most amazing song of the year and a big hit and when I listen to this song I simply forget my self and my sorrows and I could make loads of Barothas without knowing that I am getting tired.. Its simply a Classic!" He said he couldnt beleive what he was hearing and finally he told the Barotha making person that he had sung this song and eventually got free Barotha and a big respect from the people in that shop. And he said I am always thankful for Rahman for givinghim such an incredible song and showcased his talent for the younger generation. And this incident is an evergreen memory in his mind! Isnt this simply amazing guys! When I heard this story I was like wow! This one of those
stories you hear from your Grandparents which make an everalsting effect on you. Thats how this felt. Rahman is a genius! Parthiban

Re: [arr] RDB BGM - my thoughts

2006-04-05 Thread Raghu BP

Hi, I too agree, Swadesh is ARR's best bgm effort till date. Even to some extent I love Yuva. But swadesh is my all time favourite. The use of indian instruments in Swadesh was exceptional. I still get goose bumps when I listen to Swadesh BGM's.Raghu- Original Message From: Ajit [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.comSent: Tuesday, 4 April, 2006 11:35:14 PMSubject: [arr] RDB BGM - my thoughts Thanks a lot AJ. Your efforts are really appreciated. Where else could we get this??? Nowhere but here and thanks to members like you, we are privaleged. However, I agree with
Vishwsant that this score did not impress me a whole lot. There are bits and pieces in this score that are just brilliant, but overall, it's a bit too hollywoodish. Swades' BGM was more spiritual and more Indian sounding, as well as more diverse. There is a lack of ethnic flavor in this score. But, this is just an observation of the score by itself. Without a doubt, with the movie, this score is absolutely perfect and enhances each situation in the movie incredibly..the best BGM score since Swades. Thanks a ton AJ. As always perfect work! But about the score, I heard all the pieces and IMHO it is not half as good as Swades's score. Maybe it blends with the movie very well, but when hearing audio only, no competition with Swades's score! NopeBTW, Later part of The
Kakori Robbery reminds me so much of Thiruda Thiruda theme music! AJ [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey, Sorry for being away for such a long time but lots of projects were happening to me in the last months. But anyway, I got my RDB DVD last week and I realized again that ARR's contribution in the movie is absolutely mindblowing! His music plays an important and integral part of the film and without it wouldn't have the impact we all had watching this piece of masterwork. This underlines again what I believe that ARR is a director's composer or probably even more than that. In this case I guess that he might even has topped Rakesh Om Prakash's visions of music for RDB. In my eyes it has even topped ARR's score in Swades!

Re: [arr] asha bhonsale and rd burman

2006-04-05 Thread Raghu BP

Well said Roshan. I think we should ignore such topics.Raghu- Original Message From: Roshan [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.comSent: Wednesday, 5 April, 2006 10:05:09 PMSubject: Re: [arr] asha bhonsale and rd burman I completely agree with vishwesh. there is no way Asha Bhonsle saying anything bad about new generation MDs or trying to "Advertise RD Burman" (what a ridiculous word to use) come on, do u really think someone like rd burman needs to be advertised to get popularity?? And another thing is, bashing Himesh reshammaiyya and asha bhonsle or hailing about Nadeem sravan's melodies are
not what most of we fans would like to see in the groups. neither any comparison charts of AR Rahman and haris jayraj or what ever. instead of these senseless topics why not we talk something about the music of AR Rahman, which is what this group is really meant to be. Now i would like to list down some of the senseless topics happened recently. 1. Haris jayraj vs. ar rahman there were many topics of this kind. some saying haris is better some saying yuvan is better, .. and none were talking about ar rahman's music. 2. Nadeem sravan.. welll that one was all the way from afghanisthan.. was the funniest post i have ever read in this forum. the guy had no idea what he was talking about. and lot of ppl including me tried to bark at him (WAste of time) 3. ar rahman copies this thing is still happening at a random basis. and every
time someone posts something like we all start to talk some sense to them. but all those efforts, eventually will be a waste of time. 4. bashing others what did Himesh reshmaiya or asha bhonsle do to AR Rahman for us to criticise them like this. Himesh reshmaiya might not be a good MD or he might have a nasal accent, but he only expressed his love for the music of ar rahman and instead of accepting the honestly, we all started bashing him. and now, Asha bhonsle, this is ridiculous thing saying such bad things about a great singer without any facts in it. 5. replying to all these above said posts well thats what i am doing. in fact these senseless threads are to be ignored but couldnt help. so few of us starts to reply to the threads of these kind to waste the time. no offense to anyone. i respect the right of expressing ur
openion. but, by posting these kind of threads, it is degrading the quality of a wonderful group. thanks for reading regards Roshan __ Yahoo! India Matrimony: Find your partner now. Go to http://yahoo.shaadi.com

[arr] Vishal of [Vishal-Shekar] talks abt ARR

2006-02-20 Thread Raghu BP

In fact if we look at last few years or so, composers like you and Shekhar, Pritam and Salim-Sulaiman are giving a new sound of music to Bollywood on a consistent note.God is great and is defining what we do. Look at the kind of work that A.R.Rehman is doing. Now that's the dream we have. You want to be the one who should be setting the trend. I know it is pretty ambitious but this is what we aspire to do.http://www.indiafm.com/features/2006/02/20/1029/index.htmlRaghu
