[arr] 2 more songs added to Jhootha hi Sahi?
Rahman tracks changes On finding something amiss in the final edit of Abbas Tyrewala's Jhootha Hi Sahi, the composer added two songs to the soundtrack at the very last minute Kunal.M.Shah Posted On Wednesday, September 08, 2010 at 02:06:20 AM Watching the final edit of friend Abbas Tyrewala's Jhootha Hi Sahi, turned out to be dissatisfactory for A R Rahman, who is known for being a perfectionist. The composer found something amiss and made an impromptu decision to record two more songs for the film. After watching the final edit of the film in Chennai recently, Rahman added one song to be played during the start and end credits of the film and another one that will be the title song of the film. Rahman has now sent the songs to his friend Tyrewala. When contacted, Tyrewala confirmed the news and said, Rahman felt that the film needed one song and deserved one song. For me, the album was done and we had seven songs in it but now we have two more making the total number nine. The album will be releasing soon. Rahman felt that for the start and the end titles we should have a romantic track instead of just music. The song has a few English, some Urdu and a few Punjabi lyrics. Apparently, Rahman had suggested that the film should have a title track on hearing that the film was called Jhootha Hi Sahi. Tyrewala added,He said that the film deserved to have a title track. He said, 'I don't care where you use it, whether you use it in the background or not but the film deserves it.' In fact, he was in London at that time. He booked a studio there and recorded it himself. We finalised the song on the Internet. It's very nice of him to do it since he was in the middle of so many things. Coincidentally, Rahman has been busy dealing with the mixed response to his Commonwealth Games 2010 track. Wonder if that is prompting him to be extra careful with Tyrewala's film? Of course, it could be friendship too. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/201009082010090802062063743d0c81f/Rahman-tracks-changes.html
[arr] [Semi ARR] Rockstar, yes, but dancing, no
Sonal Chawla Posted On Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 02:03:14 AM One will see Ranbir Kapoor doing the head bangs and playing the guitar but don't expect the Kapoor boy dancing in Imtiaz Ali's Rockstar. The director strictly feels that Ranbir shouldn't be dancing in the film as it is contrary to the image of a rockstar. In the film Ranbir plays a huge Jim Morrison fan. While songs in the film will evoke the vibe of the swinging rock genre, Ranbir will not be doing any Bollywood jhatkas, the staple of choreography in tinsel town. A source reveals, Director Imtiaz feels that no rockstar has ever danced and it will look very weird and not in character. He has strictly said no to dance moves. Imtiaz wants Ranbir to get under the skin of the character and not merely behave like one by only playing the guitar. The source continues, There is a song with his co-star Nargis Fakhri, but whether he will dance remains a mystery. Imtiaz is yet to figure out the `dancing' aspect of his film. At the moment they have shot for a gypsy song with montages of Ranbir coming in. Imtiaz had given Ranbir a few videos of rockstars from the past, so that Ranbir could cultivate their style and habits. Ranbir had been learning guitar to play the part of a crooner. Both Ranbir and Imtiaz remained unavailable for comment. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/2010081920100819020314284ddc105eb/Rockstar-yes-but-dancing-no.html
[arr] Rahman's absence 'delays Tyrewala's film'
A. R. Rahman's absence from India has reportedly held up the release of Jhootha Hi Sahee. The composer, who became a household name after writing the soundtrack for Slumdog Millionaire, agreed to provide the music for Abbas Tyrewala's film but is said to have delayed handing his work to the film's production team. Real Bollywood claims that Jhootha Hi Sahee producer Madhu Mantena had to fly to London to track Rahman down and request the songs. Despite the delays that Rahman has allegedly caused, director Tyrewala defended him, saying: Whatever the time taken over the music is worth it. Rahman doing the music adds a totally new dimension to my film. Jhootha Hi Sahee has been given a new release date of October 15. http://www.digitalspy.com/bollywood/news/a261011/rahmans-absence-delays-tyrewalas-film.html

Sun Pictures marketing team is going full swing promoting the The Robot, the Hindi version of Rajinikanth-Aishwarya Rai Enthiran. Venus a leading music company has snapped up the Hindi audio rights. This will be Rajinikanth's first public appearance in Mumbai after 15 long years. Rajinikant was initially reluctant to attend the event. In fact, he kept insisting that he wanted to be kept of out of it, but Shankar insisted that he has to promote the Hindi version of the film to give it a pan Indian look. The entire of the The Robot team including Rajinikanth, Aishwarya Rai, Shankar and AR Rahman is expected to take part in the event at the Marriot. http://sify.com/movies/fullstory.php?id=14953233

Re: [arr] Endhiran - Initial Reactions - Mixed Feelings
I am loving the songs. I never thought that we could hear these kinds of songs in a Tamil movie. The last time that I said wow for an ARR song was Aaromale. This album has 2 of them - Pudhiya manidha and Irumbile. Just waiting to get my hands on the CD. I am also happy that ARR is using Shreya more frequently nowadays and hope that it continues. She is brilliant, probably the best of this generation. Love her singing in Kadal Anukkal. FYI, songs are available for listening on Raaga.com. --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Madhavan Rajan rsamadhu2...@... wrote: I feel really sorry for those who couldn't connect to the songs! All I can say is a usual statement - Give it a try, else try listening after watching the movie...It's a known fact that few songs of AR gets connected after a long time...Hope you like them soon and enjoy the moment... [arr] Rock climber
While Aamir Khan is known to take interest in the music of a film, rather every film he's acting in, Ranbir Kapoor is doing it for personal reasons. The actor plays a rockstar in Imtiaz Ali's Rockstar and is working hard to get under the skin of his character. So, the actor decided to give it his best shot. Since music plays a very important role in the film and AR Rahman is composing it in this one, Ranbir wants to understand it thoroughly. That is why he has started making frequent trips to AR Rahman's studio. An insider says, Ranbir is taking keen interest in the music of the film. The actor knows that music is the soul of this film and that he needs to understand its pulse to really get into his character. Apart from taking guitar lessons, Ranbir is also brushing up on his rock music knowledge. Talking to Saif Ali Khan might help? But just being in the presence of AR Rahman, must prove to be a music lesson in itself for Ranbir. Sure enough, the actor apparently just sits quietly at Rahman's panoramic studio, while watching him work his magical fingers on his digitised equipment. Apparently, the character Ranbir plays is a Jim Morrison fan. But for a Rahman-besotted Ranbir, that might just prove to be another challenge. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/201007292010072903155616816d9d0e9/Rock-climber.html
[arr] Rahman plays party pooper
The cast and crew of Abbas Tyrewala's next were planning to combine the wrap-up bash with a housewarming party at John Abraham's new pad in Bandra. However, A R Rahman played spoilsport by calling producer Madhu Mantena and director Tyrewala to attend his concert in Wembley on Sunday night. And with John travelling to Malaysia to shoot a commercial, his first house party has been put off for the time being. Confirming this Madhu says, You can't say no to Rahman when he calls. By calling us to London he managed to squeeze in some recordings for our film and even put up a rocking show. Watching him live is always a different experience. The wrap-up party went for a toss, but Abbas and I are having a great time in London. On his return from London in a few days, Madhu plans to rework the dates to organise another party. Of course we will celebrate. Once we come back and speak to John there will be another party which, hopefully, won't be cancelled. http://www.mid-day.com/entertainment/2010/jul/270710-John-Abraham-A-R-Rahman-wrap-up-housewarming-bash.htm
[arr] Johns dandiya dance
Hiren Kotwani, Hindustan Times Mumbai, July 22, 2010 Ever since its announcement, 1-800 Love has constantly been in the news. Now, a dandiya song has been added to the film, starring John Abraham and Tyrewalla's wife Pakhi, which is all set to release this Navratri. And keeping the festival in mind, the director has just wrapped up the film's shoot with a pacy dandiya track. Initially, Tyrewalla was to use another romantic number that he had recorded with composer AR Rahman. But then we decided to release the film on October 15, and since Dussehra is on October 17, Abbas felt that a dandiya track would be more suitable, informs producer Madhu Mantena. So Tyrewalla recorded the song with Rahman about two weeks ago, after the latter returned to the city from the US. Abraham, Pakhi and the rest of the cast participated in the picturisation of the song, which concluded on Tuesday, under the choreography of Ahmed Khan. Mantena asserts that the dandiya number won't hamper the narration of the film, since it fits in exactly where the other track was supposed to be. The earlier song they recorded will not feature in the album. Rahman's songs are precious. We can't afford to waste it by including it in the album when we haven't used it in the movie, he reiterates. About his actor's moves, Mantena enthuses, John is pretty good at dandiya. So much so that we were all amazed. He's one of the fittest actors in the industry and a viral flu can't keep him down. http://www.hindustantimes.com/John-s-dandiya-dance/Article1-575983.aspx
[arr] 7.6 lakh Audio CDs of Komaram Puli in 3 days
Pawan Kalyan's Komaram Puli' had 7.6 lakh audio CD's sold in 3 days, a record in Telugu cinema industry. `Komaram Puli' audio CD's were sold in record number and this feat looks like `Komaram Puli' audio is breaking all records and scripting history. In fact, 7.6 lakh audio CD's for `Komaram Puli' is a truly amazing feat. `Komaram Puli's first bunch audio CDs and cassettes hit the market yesterday and all were sold out completely across the state (exception of few minor centers). Sony BMG Company released `Komaram Puli' audio CDs into the market with a total of 7.60 Lakhs in its first bunch, which is an all time record of Telugu movies. Considering the current piracy, coupled with the free available songs in the Internet 7.6 lakh audio CD's sell out in a single day is something great. Moreover, a total of 13 to 15 Lakhs of audio CDs are expected to be sold out in the full run. Your take on A R Rahman, whom you have admitted in the past as being a big fan of? Have you met him personally? Incidently Dev D came out at the same time as Delhi 6 hit the stands. How was the experience of being pitted against a giant of our times? I really don't know how to react to that. I am a huge fan of AR Rahman and I have idolized him for the longest time. He is the reason why I am here, so when people compare me with him or pit my music against his I feel honored but at the back of my mind is always the thought that I have a long way to go before I can even come close to him. He is way too ahead of everyone else and he is one of a kind. Unfortunately I haven't had the pleasure of meeting him in person http://www.musicaloud.com/2010/07/05/amit-trivedi/
[arr] ARR brings the sounds of Slumdog Millionaire to Atlantic City
By SARAH WATSON Staff Writer | Posted: Saturday, June 12, 2010 | 0 comments Font Size: Default font size Larger font size A fusion of western and Indian music styles marked a unique cultural crossover concert Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall, featuring Academy Award-winning composer A.R. Rahman. Rahman, who is best known for writing the score for Slumdog Millionaire, played his second show of a 16-city international tour featuring music from the movie and other songs he has written. The performance featured some elements of Bollywood performances, such as intense colors, frenzied dance and exciting music, but it was more of a multimedia concert that showcased various Indian cultural themes. Unique lighting designs transformed the relatively simple into a three-dimensional array of color, some of which pulsed out as blocks from a staircase. The show featured 30 dancers and 10 singers. While Rahman is best known to North American audiences as the composer of Slumdog Millionaireâs score, for which he won two Academy Awards in 2008, his long career in India as a composer for Bollywood films and other music, as well as that of a singer, has made him a major international star. On his website, Rahman estimates he has sold about 150 million albums. Rahman also was commissioned in 2001 by Andrew Lloyd Webber to compose the music for Bombay Dreams, a musical about Bollywood. It played in London and on Broadway. While waiting for the concert to start at Boardwalk Hall, fans cheered wildly every time a few notes of his Academy Award-winning song Jai Ho played. The concert started off with one of Rahmanâs other popular songs, The Journey Home, with a boy dancing in the crowd to illustrate the lyrics. Boardwalk Hall has held a number of Bollywood and other productions aimed at ethnic southeast Asian audiences, but Rahmanâs performance Saturday night marked a unique type of cultural crossover, General Manager Greg Tesone said. âThe thing about Bollywood is the movie stars and the music,â he said. âThis is more about the music.â The majority of those in attendance were of Indian descent, but because Rahman has become more popular outside of traditionally Indian circles, he expected to see more fans from other cultures, Tesone said. Mihir Pandya, 27, and Bhisham Sharma, 27, both of Philadelphia, said they bought tickets to the concert about a month ago and said theyâve been fans of Rahmanâs music for a number of years. The cultural impact of seeing a Indian star that has sold about 150 million albums cross further into American mainstream âmeans a lot because heâs become an international star,â Sharma said. âWe can rank him with all the top musicians and composers in India,â Pandya said. âAll younger Indians enjoy his music.â For Krishna Patel, 26, who traveled to Boardwalk Hall from the Philadelphia suburbs, Saturday night was her first chance to see Rahman perform. She said sheâs been a huge fan for years. âI love listening to him sing,â she said. Her cousin, Rimple Shingala, 26, said his concert tour was different than other concerts popular with Indian audiences because âmore people know about him because of Slumdog Millionare.â http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/news/press/atlantic_city/article_5d62efd4-76a1-11df-bd84-001cc4c002e0.html

[arr] I love mindless entertainers - Mani ratnam
You gave Bollywood AR Rahman with Roja and from there he went on to fascinate the world. How much would you say you have contributed to his success? My contribution to his career is very little, almost nothing. A talent like his would have emerged in any case. It just happened to be with Roja. That is one of those good coincidences. He was fantastic even then, and what he is doing today is just as amazing. And what is his contribution to your films? I depend quite a bit on music for my films. Whether it was Ilayaraja who has done a lot of films for me or Rahman, their contribution to my films is enormous. A lot of my films are underlined by music, sometimes it could be against the content of the scene too but they are able to score something different and add another text to the scene. Without their music as their background my films would not be the same. http://www.bangaloremirror.com/article/81/2010061220100612210608193beac7\ f83/%E2%80%98I-love-mindless-entertainers%E2%80%A6.html

Mani Ratnam's passionate period film Lajjo, set during the Partition with Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the lead, is all set to be revived. It was earlier set aside after the songs had been written by Gulzar and composed by AR Rahman because the budget for a Partition film was considered prohibitive. [arr] Musical encounter
Music maestro AR Rahman is all geared up for his world tour `AR Rahman Jai Ho concert'. It kicks off on June 11 in New York at the famous Nassau Coliseum arena. When Rahman was amidst rehearsals at Washington DC, he received some very special visitors - they were Michael Jackson's elder brother Jermaine and his son, Prince Michael Jackson. A source reveals, Rahman was practicing for his upcoming concert at Patriot Centre and by a coincidence, Jermaine and Prince were rehearsing in an adjoining hall at the same venue. As soon as they learnt about Rahman's presence, they decided to pay him a visit. The late pop star's son Prince told Rahman that he loved Jai Ho. Rahman immediately extended a personal invitation to the Jackson family to attend his concert. Rahman, a selfconfessed fan of Michael Jackson, had issued a very emotional statement following the pop legend's untimely demise. Michael's family, by extension, holds an equally special place in Rahman's heart. Elaborating on the special bond between Rahman and Michael, our source adds, Not many people know that when Rahman won the Oscar, Michael Jackson had personally called to congratulate him and invite him for lunch where he introduced Rahman to his family and three children. The King of Pop liked the Jai Ho track so much that he had expressed a desire to work with Rahman. He had specifically liked the chord arrangement of the Oscar-winning song. Subsequently, Rahman made several trips to Los Angeles, but destiny had other plans. Rahman, who is currently in LA, confirms, Yes I had a chance meeting with Jermaine Jackson in Washington DC during the time I was rehearsing there. We exchanged pleasantries. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/201006022010060202100981974a4b4d8/Musical-encounter.html

[arr] Bombay Dreams of getting bigger
Cannes, May 18: Bombay Dreams, the musical, is to be made into a big-budget film. The venture will be a collaboration between Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Really Useful Group in the UK, and Marquee Pictures, a Beverley Hills-based US film production company. Canada-based Deepa Mehta, much admired for her trilogy Earth, Fire and Water, will direct the film in 2011, once she has completed the movie adaptation she is currently working on of Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children. The musical ran successfully for two years before opening in 2004 in Broadway where it did less well. However, the triumph of Slumdog Millionaire, which took eight Oscars in 2009, appears to have convinced the Americans that now is the propitious moment to turn Bombay Dreams, the stage musical, into a movie. The story of an Indian slum boy, who wants to make it big in tinsel town, epitomises the Hollywood and the American dream. Mehta's husband, David Hamilton, a producer on many of her films, said in Cannes: A.R. Rahman, who wrote the music for the musical, is writing some new music for the film. The people behind the project are very serious about making the film. The screenplay will be written by Sabrina Dhawan, acclaimed writer of the much loved Monsoon Wedding, which was directed by Mehta who commented: Bombay Dreams has a rich and compelling story, appealing characters and a satisfying interplay of comedy, romance and the dramatic. It really is the ideal musical to adapt for film. Lloyd Webber, who can claim substantial credit for introducing Rahman to the western world, said: I am very proud to have presented Bombay Dreams in Britain where it was a ground-breaking show. It was deeply rewarding for me to see Rahman's work recognised in America when he won two Oscars and I am thrilled to be working with him again on this exciting project. Rahman returned the compliment: I have had a wonderful collaboration with Andrew. And now I am very happy to continue this collaboration. I have worked on more than 100 movies, and believe that this may be my most exciting project. In 1998 Lloyd Webber went to the Hammersmith Lyric to see Fourteen Songs, Two Weddings and a Funeral with Parminder Nagra in the lead, the Tamasha Theatre Company's brilliant musical adaptation of the Bollywood blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. Seeing the musical encouraged Lloyd Webber to take the gamble of making Bombay Dreams. Shekhar Kapur, the director currently serving on the Cannes jury, put him in touch with Rahman. When the musical first opened, British critics predicted it would not last more than a few weeks at most. Indians, living in the UK and visiting from the UK, made them eat humble pie. Steve Wilkinson, who has a background in theatre and whose company Azure has provided development funding for the film, said in Cannes: While every production has an inherently uncertain outcome in the marketplace, Bombay Dreams, with its amazing musical pedigree and an award-winning production team, has a chance of becoming one of the great musical films of the decade. It is worth recalling Lloyd Webber's tart reaction when a Hindutva type asked him why he had not called his musical Mumbai Dreams. Mumbai Dreams has no music, he shot back. http://www.telegraphindia.com/1100519/jsp/frontpage/story_12464861.jsp
[arr] Gulzar gets unique gift from Mani Ratnan, Raavan gets new song in return
Mani Ratnam's Raavan has just been given a new song, thanks to that poet par excellence Gulzar who saw the film and suggested the embellishment. The director, always open to fresh ideas from his team, readily agreed. Composer Rahman was informed and that's how Raavan got a new song. Gulzar Saab, who just back from Goa after participating in the stage rendition of four of his plays, says the song was almost a gift he owed Mani Ratnam for gifting him something that he, Gulzar, had never received in his entire 47-year old career as a lyricist. Mani sent the poet-lyricist a note after the release of the Raavan music congratulating Gulzar Saab for the songs. Says Gulzar Saab, In my entire career I've never received such a heartwarming endorsement of my work. I received a note from Mani Ratnam congratulating me and saying he's very proud of the music. And look at the humility of this genius. No filmmaker has ever sent me a note like this. Mani is the only one. And this one gesture has enhanced my respect for him even more. Not only this gesture, Gulzar Saab also received an invitation from Mani to see the film at a special screening for which the poet flew down to Chennai recently. It was there that the new song suddenly happened. Recounts Gulzar Saab, After editing Raavan, Mani wanted me to watch the film. No filmmaker invites even the technical crew for a preview, let alone the lyricist. I flew down to Chennai to watch the film. I'd never do something like this for anyone else. This is how strongly I feel about this man's humility and greatness. As the end-credits rolled and Rahman's music began, Mani Ratnam and Gulzar Saab thought there ought to be a song at the end. That's how Gulzar Saab wrote an additional number for Raavan... 'Ab Iss Shareer Ke Sirey Khol Dey/Aur Goongi Aatma Ko Bol Dey'. Says Gulzar Saab, Both Mani and I felt the music that Rahman had composed for the end titles was too beautiful to go wordless. We decided to give words to Rahman's creation. Rahman was then given the task of turning the music piece into a song. Interestingly neither Mani Ratnam nor A. R. Rahman fully understands Gulzar's Urdu poetry. Defends Gulzar Saab, But they are never short of questions. Never does a word go in until Mani is fully convinced of its relevance. He's never hesitant about asking. I would be appalled if my words were accepted blindly by a director. Even if his Urdu is weak, Mani has a terrific sense of poetry and images. http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/news/2010/05/17/14124/index.html Another song???

[arr] Shekhar Kapur announces his next at Cannes
Kapur is better known not as one who made Masoom and Mr India, but as one who made the notorious Indian dacoit, Phoolan Devi, into an iconic screen heroine in Bandit Queen. Interestingly, the movie went on to make the dacoit a real-life star. She was voted to India's Parliament, though the violence she had lived by in Chambal Ravines ultimately got her. She was murdered. Bandit Queen helped Kapur to garner critical acclaim and foster his ties with the Queen of Film Festivals, Cannes. The work was screened here in the mid 1990s, and this year, Kapur is on the renowned international jury here, a position that Sharmila Tagore, Nandita Das, Aishwarya Rai and Arundhati Roy had held at different points in time. What is different about them and Kapur is that he plans to nurture his ties with the Festival still further by bringing his movie here next year. Called Paani, its principal shooting will begin this November in Singapore and Dubai. Based on a book by Maude Barlow, Blue Covenant: the global water crisis and the coming battle for the right and scripted by David Farr, Paani will tell a dark story about the looming water crisis. Announcing this at a Press conference here today to coincide with the ongoing Cannes Film Festival, Kapur said his movie will dramatise how this shortage will affect relationships between individuals, cities, States and nations. The beautiful young daughter of the chairman of the world's largest water corporation arrives in the Upper City of plentiful. On a chance encounter in the impoverished Lower City, she is kidnapped by the young handsome water warrior. A love story that changes minds and methods, Paani will be set to music by A.R Rahman. Kapur added that water could well become a weapon in the future with corporates taking over its distribution. This is what I hope my work will draw attention to, provoke a debate and hopefully help find a solution to this grave problem, he explained. When asked whether it could help catch the eye of the politician, Kapur quipped that his Bandit Queen did manage to do that. Phoolan Devi gave up arms, served her sentence and went on to become a political figure. And Paani hopes to melt hearts and move minds with its tale of young love that is unwittingly drawn into this messy revolution. It is the story of young love caught in the flurry of conflict and war between two cities, one that is rich and waterful and the other that is poor and waterless, where the water rats are forced steal that precious liquid. http://www.hindustantimes.com/Shekhar-Kapur-announces-his--next-at-Cannes/H1-Article1-543914.aspx
[arr] I initially wondered how I was going to do it: A.R. Rahman
The Tamil was of a very high standard and I initially wondered how I was going to do it, but thankfully it has come out well. This was how A.R. Rahman described his experience of working with the anthem for the World Classical Tamil Conference which was released on Saturday. Apparently, the tune for the anthem came to him immediately, but production was quite another matter. It took two to two-and-a-half months, but we were working with a large crew almost 70 singers, Rahman, dapper in a rich reddish-brown kurtha with an embroidered panel running down the front, told reporters on the eve of the function to release the anthem. All of us together worked on the anthem There was TMS [T.M. Soundararajan], Yuvan [Shankar Raja], Shruti Hassan, P.Sushila (to name a few). Basically, I have been busy in Hollywood and also touring. Therefore I was working on a tight schedule and was available only for two or three days, so people who could come then joined us, he said to a question on how the singers were chosen. A new verse on Kamban and Avvaiyar was added almost when the composing was over, and had to be incorporated into the final cut. TMS begins with Pirapokkum Ella Uyirkkum, the first lines of the anthem composed by Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi. Some of the other top playback artistes featuring in the anthem include Harini, Hariharan, Benny Dayal, Srinivas, Vijay Jesudas, Naresh Iyer. Rahman's nephew G.V.Prakash and sister Rehana have also joined the ensemble. The thing about this anthem, Rahman says, is that it also features singers who have distinguished themselves in other genres of music such as Carnatic (Aruna Sayeeram, Bombay Jaishree, Nithyashree and Soumya), folk, Sufi (M.Y.Abdul Ghani, Khajamoideen, S.Sabumoideen), and even rap (Blaaze). Another key aspect is that three generations of singers have participated. Responding to a complaint that the words in his songs were often drowned out by the instruments, he says, I think you will hear the words in this song. In fact we have kept the instruments to a minimum so that the words are clear. The traditional Tamil nagaswaram and tavil blend melodiously with the guitar and drums, even as the carnatic notes wind seamlessly with the rap. And what are his favourite lines from the anthem? For some one who added a line in Tamil in his Oscars acceptance speech, the answer was predictable: Semmozhiyaana Tamizh mozhiyaam, the line that runs right through as the chorus. http://beta.thehindu.com/news/states/tamil-nadu/article431202.ece
[arr] Rhythm and Reason
Dipti Nagpaul D'Souza Posted: Fri May 14 2010, 23:54 hrs For someone who protects his privacy fiercely, it wasn't surprising that three guards were manning the door to the room where A R Rahman was seated before the launch of Rhymeskoolthe album of nursery rhymes by the students of his music school KM Music Conservatory. However, when we entered the room from the back door hoodwinking the burly guards, the music maestro was more amused than miffed. Rahman was last seen in Mumbai two weeks ago at Raavan's music launch. What makes the film exceptional is that he has again teamed up with Mani Ratnam, the veteran filmmaker who gave him his first break in films. After a long association of 10 films, it is only natural that the two reclusive artistes have developed a mutual, almost instinctive, understanding. Mani doesn't reject anythinghe's not the kind of guy who'll say `I don't like this'. You have to go by experience and see it in his eyes what he means, Rahman says. After bagging the Oscar and the Grammys for Slumdog Millionaire, the musician experienced a low phase when Blue and Couple's Retreat failed to appeal to the masses. But with the songs Beera and Behene De from Raavan topping charts, Rahman has established that he still holds a key to Indian audience's heart. At the same time, there is criticism tooof having revisited his earlier works in Raavan's music. At the suggestion, Rahman is quick to reply, Mani Ratnam was the boss. The music composer adds that the vision for Raavan's music was different two years ago. It was a different interpretation but over two years, as the movie took its own course, so did the music. What we have now is what is right for the film, the 44-year-old says. One of the finer examples of success worldwide, Rahman, insists that the only change that recent accomplishments have brought about is that life has gotten busier. However, with three public appearances over three weeksthe concert at the IPL closing ceremony, the Raavan music launch and the launch of Rhymeskool there is little doubt that Rahman is attempting to step out of his cocoon. When you have a role to play, you might as well live up to it. I still don't like giving interviews but I don't mind it when I have something to talk about, he smiles. Rahman is all set to depart on his world tour covering 16 cities across the US and Europe from June 11. He even had to forgo two Hollywood films for this concert to work out. I want to celebrate India through these concerts. The world will get to know what India is, he says. Meanwhile, he recently signed a deal with American music producer Jimmy Lovine's Interscope Records and will also be collaborating with British singer Dido and RB star Usher. However, he leaves us to speculate about his collaborations with Mick Jagger and Dave Stewart. Rhymeskool is Rahman's attempt to provide the students of his music school appropriate exposure. Supervised by him, the album has 10 popular rhymes recomposed by the students and five new ones. It is their first big step into the real world. I thank Saregama and Katrina Kaif, who is the narrator in the album. Though he hopes to be able to provide the students more such outlets in future, Rahman is clear that he would not include any of them in his film projects. The issue of favouritism can creep in, he explains, And when making music, purity of mind is very important. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/rhythm-and-reason/618610/

The album from Sa Re Ga Ma Productions is presented by Sunfeast Dream Cream. It has nursery rhymes and other audio-visual content featuring Katrina for children. Oscar winner A.R. [arr] A.R. Rahman Tour To Give Indian Music A High Tech Spin
Iconic Indian film score composer A.R. Rahman says he's looking forward to bringing East and West together with his upcoming The A.R. Rahamn Jai Ho Concert: The Journey Home World Tour. We wanted to get the best of both worlds -- the finest team from America and the soul of the music and the traditions of India and all that stuff, Rahman tells Billboard.com about the tour, which begins June 11 at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island and will play at least 20 shows in North America and Europe. Staged by American creative director Amy Tinkham (Madonna, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Paul McCartney), the two-and-a-half hour show will feature a cast of musicians, dancers and acrobats, plus changing sets and an extensive video production. What is added is a new dimension which nobody has ever seen, the Asian audience has never seen, adds Rahman who won a pair of both Academy and Grammy awards for his 2008 Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack. Normally what happens is we go and sing and there's some dancers and some kind of visual effects. But this one is so integrated, and every (musical) bar and every second is integrated with technology and stuff which moves around and it's done with so much passion. Rahman himself will be playing keyboards and singing during the show, as well as speaking to the audience to explain the meanings and creation of the songs. We're looking at a universal appeal to this, he explains. There's some songs in English, of course, but even for those that aren't you can still come and enjoy the musicality and the whole culture and colorfulness and the vibrancy of Indian stuff. That's all going to be there. Though the show is keeping him busy, Rahman is still busy working on new music. He's just finishing up his 10th soundtrack for his original employer and mentor, Rajat Kamal, and Rahman has also started work on a non-film album of original songs that will target the North American markets he conquered with Slumdog Millionaire and the single Jai Ho. It's a work in progress, Rahman reports. I've had three or four sessions already. The music is probably an extension of what 'Jai Ho' did but going more friendly in terms of English audiences. It's retaining the same kind of magic, hopefully. Rahman says he's also been approached about collaborations by most of the artists he joined for the We Are the World: 25 for Haiti single earlier this year, but I'm taking it easy. I want to finish my album first. http://www.billboard.com/news/a-r-rahman-tour-to-give-indian-music-a-high-1004088455.story?tag=hpfeed#/news/a-r-rahman-tour-to-give-indian-music-a-high-1004088455.story?tag=hpfeed How do they come up with Rajat Kamal instead of Manirathnam

[arr] ARR to perform live in Mumbai on April 24 and 25
By Kunal M Shah and Subhash K Jha Posted On Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 05:37:59 AM This news will surely delight AR Rahman fans. One of India's and the world's most-loved composers AR Rahman will be performing back-to-back in Mumbai on April 24 and 25. While he will be first performing live on April 24 for the music release of Mani Ratnam's Raavan for a select audience from Bollywood and the media at Yash Raj Studios, the next day Rahman's performance will be the highlight of the IPL grand finale at DY Patil stadium. It's a double treat for Rahman fans as he has not performed live in Mumbai for many years and certainly not after receiving the Oscar. Ratnam's favourite composer Rahman is taking a break from his current world tour to attend and perform during the music release of Raavan. Word that Rahman will be doing a live show in Mumbai has already begun to spread in the film industry. The official spokesperson of Raavan said, Never before had we started getting requests for an invite to a music function days in advance. Call it the Mani magic, the Rahman magic or their combination. Or maybe it's the excitement of a Rahman concert as he hasn't performed live in Mumbai for ages. On April 24, the composer is expected to perform a couple of tracks from Raavan and selected songs from all Mani Ratnam films he has scored for right from Roja to Guru. The Raavan concert is so special that Abhishek Bachchan, who will be shooting in Greece for Abhinay Deo's Game, will cut short his shooting to fly back to Mumbai for a day. The entire cast and crew of Raavan along with the entire Bachchan family will attend the Rahman concert on April 24. A source said, Mani Ratnam himself has planned this grand event. Only the cast and crew of the film are aware of it. Rahman is already in Mumbai and has started rehearsing for the same. The very next day he will be performing live at the DY Patil stadium for the IPL finale where he will perform his Oscar winning song Jai ho. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/2010042120100421053759731182c0d2/Time-for-Rahmania.html

[arr] Vairamuthu on Tamil meet anthem
A.R. Rahman has completed composing a rough cut of the anthem penned by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for the World Classical Tamil Conference. According to sources, the track was recently played to Mr. Karunanidhi. Member of Parliament Kanimozhi and poet Vairamuthu were present. On the rough cut that he listened to, Mr. Vairamuthu said: This song will be to Tamil Nadu and Tamilians what Vande Mataram is to India. Starting with the phrase Pirappokkum, which is also the theme of the conference, the song has references to the five epics of Tamil literature. http://beta.thehindu.com/news/cities/Chennai/article393331.ece

[arr] [Semi ARR] Abbas Tyrewala hires The Hurt Locker art director
Filmmaker Abbas Tyrewala has hired David Bryan, who was the supervising art director for multiple Oscar-winning movie The Hurt Locker, to work on his next movie 1-800-Love. Bryan, who was widely praised for his life-like replication of the battle scarred streets of Iraq in Jordan for The Hurt Locker, is the production designer for 1-800-Love that stars John Abraham and Tyrewala's wife Pakhi in the leads. Tyrewala wanted Bryan's help in depicting the 'real London' through his film. We wanted to portray the real London that is rarely seen. It's an amazing city with very diverse locations. In particular, we were looking for a real iconic studio apartment for our lead actor John Abraham, Bryan said in a press release. In September last year, it was reported that traffic in London was blocked due to the film's shooting. The crew shot for three nights at the iconic Tower Bridge, where the famous chase sequence from the movie The Mummy was shot. Boat traffic on Thames river was also restricted while the crew was shooting for the film. Bryan is happy to collaborated with Tyrewala and his team. Working with a Bollywood crew was a great experience, much more than on a similar British film, he added. Bryan's first release after The Hurt Locker will be 1-800-Love. Apparently, Bryan persuaded Tyrewala to take him on as the production designer after showing him footage from The Hurt Locker and how he had recreated the streets of Iraq in the award winning film. 1-800-Love, the music for which is being composed by double Oscar-winning maestro A.R. Rahman, is currently under post production and is expected to release in the second quarter of this year. http://sify.com/movies/bollywood/fullstory.php?id=14934802cid=2359

Got a chance to watch the movie yesterday. Loved it and feel that this is one of the best movies that ARR has been associated with during the last 2-3 years. Full credit to Gautham Menon for picturizing all the songs. As expected, the BGM was good except for the rock-ish Jessie song which seemed to be out of place. Female version of Aaromale was a surprise. Hope that ARR gets the time to work in all of Gautham's future projects :)

Of course, you can conveniently dismiss this as petty because you have no answer to the ethics question. Don't tell me that you listen to every album on those official sites. I have absolutely no problem with ARR's albums because I am sure that you are going to buy it eventually. Even otherwise, it is not going to affect the music sales considering the huge fan-base. 1-800-LOVE, Abbas Tyrewalas's next film after Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na is nearly complete, but you will see no sign of it till July 2010. And that's because Abbas wants to make sure that the magic of the lucky July week that worked with Jaane Tu holds true for 1-800-LOVE too. Jaane Tu was released in July last year and was a sensational success. Abbas now plans to release all his films in July and is convinced that they'll work. Surprisingly, 1-800-LOVE's producer is willing to bear the mounting costs of the post-production delay. I guess I'm lucky, Abbas says. Even though the shoot is done and there's just one song left, my producer is with me in the decision to release the film in the same week as Jaane Tu Actually, I would love to release 1-800-LOVE on July 4, the same date as Jaane Tu but it isn't a Friday. They are to choose between July 2 and 9, 2010, as the release date. And if I had my way, I would release all my films in the same week, depending on how accommodating my producers are in the future. And as we wonder if we can pass this off as superstition, Abbas protests, Look, even otherwise, the first quarter of 2010 is clogged with exams and other stuff. I would rather release my films when schools and colleges are shut because they are the audience for all my films. AR was left to his own creativity on this film. There were a few spotting sessions with myself, the director Peter Billingsley, the editor Dan Lebenthal and the Music Editor Jim Weidman. I would say the most input came from Jim Weidman and Peter Billingsley. We scored in Los Angeles at the Sony soundstage. AR did most of the composing in Mumbai and a little in Hollywood. AR was a dream to work with and yes his Shark cue was very inventive, knowing he could have gone a safe route. My main job description as music supervisor is to find needle drops' or original songs to place into the film at key scenes such as the Eden East nightclub. I have scored and done music supervision on other films. I composed six original cues for this film. Peter asked me to do the Lua cue and it was very generous of AR to have it included on the soundtrack. Keep up the conversation, I'm enjoying it very much. http://backgroundscore.blogspot.com/2009/09/listening-couples-retreat.html

[arr] ARR talking to the media (Hyderabad concert)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ch8tncV1_Y
[arr] A R Rahman - opens up his mind
Just seven minutes to interview someone in a hotel suite packed with camera crew, bouncers, fellow journalists, PRs and various organisers is usually not worth it, but when the person is A.R. Rahman you can't complain. Besides, it's not everyday you get to see a journalist reveal after a few questions that she is actually a budding singer who has her demo tapes with her! Since the singer who keeps a low profile isn't easy to get in touch with, she thought an interview was the perfect opportunity to do so. While Rahman politely nodded, the PRs present next to him jumped into the fray and made way for the next journo. There was no time to people watch after that as the organisers were serious about only seven minutes. Fresh from a successful live performance in Chennai, the singer was enthusiastic to talk about his live concert, which is being held in Hyderabad on October 24 at the GMR Arena, to raise money for the CM's Relief Fund for flood victims. Unlike most celebs who crave attention, Rahman is happy to be in the news only for causes like this or for his work. But why is he not into marketing himself? There is no time to talk, he says. I am always behind in my work. At the moment I'm finishing my music for a Mani Ratnam film, Puli with Pavan Kalyan, then there's another movie with Nagarjuna's son and afterwards, I am going to Hollywood for a project. Hectic schedule indeed. Where does he get the motivation to work so hard, because he has won every accolade and award? People's love and the blessings of God motivate me, says Rahman modestly, but continues, I don't feel good if I don't give my work my 100 per cent. He is very anti the `Ok-I-have-done-enough' attitude which is prevalent in India. When I compare myself to legends abroad I realise that I have so much more to achieve. So who inspires him? That's a tough question. I am into spirituality, and when I am in that zone I get my peace to do my music... This must be his formula for success because his music manages to be globally appealing without moving away from its Indian roots. When asked how he gets it right always, he laughs and says, Sometimes it's destiny. For Jai Ho, I just had these two words, but I believed they would be easy to catch on. also, when you look at the film, it's a bit dark so I though this song at the end will be positive. Unfortunately, Subhash Ghai couldn't recognise a hit. And in an interview, SRK said he didn't get Rahman to work on one of his movies because he felt the maestro was too expensive. Two Oscars later, pricing shouldn't be an issue. Price is never the issue, I will even do it free of cost if a person really wants my music and me. The price is just a test. It's about how much one values my music. When I got an offer for Blue, no one knew much about the project, but I agreed to do it and am glad I did. Along with music, what Rahman values the most is family time. I love spending time with my kids. Visiting Cuddapah often is also something he loves. My spiritual guru lives there and I feel rejuvenated after visiting him. With this, the seven minutes are up. This doesn't mean people won't be hearing much about the maestro. Apart from the Hyderabad concert, he will perform at the International Space Station along with environmentalist Vandana Shiva, with other performers from across the globe. This show will be aired live on the website of One Drop, a charity that promotes global water awareness. -DC http://www.andhravilas.com/movienews/117753/A-R-Rahman-opens-up-his-mind.html
[arr] A R Rahman on working with his children
There is no stopping Oscar-winning music composer, A R Rahman. CNN-IBN's Entertainment Editor, Rajeev Masand got the music maestro talking about his new Hollywood project and also about working with his children. Rajeev Masand: Your son recently sang for the American film Couple's Retreat which you composed the music for. He has also sung for Bose: The Forgotten Hero? A R Rahman: No, he hasn't sung for Bose: The Forgotten Hero. He is singing for an animation film by Shekhar but that's work in progress right now. He is slowly getting musical. He started himself, played some stuff and I recorded it and happened to use it. It's just a very small portion of a song. Rajeev Masand: You daughters have sung for Mangal Pandey. A R Rahman: Yes they have. Rajeev Masand: What's it like working with your kids? A R Rahman: We take our kids for granted. They have to be programmed, told what to do, what not to do. I work with computers a lot and when they work with me, I see the whole evolution of the kids - how they were before and how they are now. It's really fantastic to see them so groomed. It's a whole new role in my life playing dad. http://ibnlive.in.com/news/a-r-rahman-on-working-with-his-children/102137-8.html Apparently, the entire interview will be telecast during the weekend.

After going underwater in Blue, director Tony D'Souza is all set to go midair for breathtaking stunts with hotties Akshay Kumar and John Abraham for his next action film. This film will be set in the deserts of Las Vegas. Tony has already convinced Blue producers Ashtavinayak, to produce his next film too. Even though several factors have already been finalised, the film will go into pre-production only next year. After showcasing some stunning underwater scenes in Blue, for his next film, Tony will indulge in hardcore action with his macho star cast. Akshay was on board for this project right from the start. After Blue, I couldn't dream of making a film without him. As for John, with his physique and body language, it's strange for him to have not done a full-on action film in all these years, said Tony. Music director AR Rahman, despite his choc-a-block schedule, has agreed to compose the film's music. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/200909222009092203213092176843ff5/Do-aur-do-punch.html

[arr] ARR roped in for Yuddham Sei?
If the grapevine is to be believed, then A. R. Rahman will be composing the music for Kamal Haasan's period film Yuddham Sei directed by Mysshkin. According to sources, Kamal felt that Rahman's magical touch would do wonders for this film. Apparently, ARR had earlier agreed to compose the music for one the actor's films, which was to be produced under his home banner of Rajkamal Film International and, by agreeing to work on Yuddham Sei, he is just fulfilling that commitment. Meanwhile, the audio of Kamal's forthcoming movie Unnai Pol Oruvan, which also marks his daughter Shruti's music directorial debut, will be launched by the end of this month. The film will hit the screens around the third week of September. http://www.deccanchronicle.com/tabloids/arr-roped-yuddham-sei-562
[arr] I make sure my hair and tie are in place
By Subhash K Jha Posted On Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 03:47:33 AM So full are Rahman's hands with current assignments in the West that he has decided not to accept any new films. At the moment, I'm racing against time to complete the Indian projects I've on hand and that includes Mani Ratnam's Raavana, Rajnikanth's animation film Sultan and Tony D'Souza's Blue. The last new assignment I accepted was Abbas Tyrewala's 1:800-LOVE. I've stopped taking on anymore for now. Rahman is going through a schizophrenic phase. He says, In the studio, my outer self has to be completely switched off. But when I'm at international public events, I've to be all there, shaking hands, making friendly talk. I've to ensure that I am saying the right things. I've to prepare myself physically, look into the mirror and make sure my hair and tie are in place. Rahman doesn't mind letting his `outer self' look dapper. But people around him don't seem that comfortable with his upgraded look. Chuckles Rahman, My south Indian friends say, `Oh look at him he's changed!' And that makes me uncomfortable. I realise I have to go out there with a certain amount of dignity and even style. I know I'm representing my country and everyone is watching. It's not easy being India's brand ambassador in the West. And Rahman, shy and reclusive at the best of times, finds it tough to assume his new gregarious, well-groomed persona with international brands vying to dress him up from head to toe. It's all new to me. I've just begun to get a hang of it. But I'm not uncomfortable, he says. At the moment, Rahman is fighting off the temptation of taking on too many international assignments. He explains, I take on what is physically possible. Money is not the main criteria. If I did anything for money, everything will fall flat. I want to do only those assignments to which I can give my fullest. However Rahman admits money is important. He says, Money is not my dream. But it fulfils my dreams. The way I travel and accompanying expenses are costly. It is, for me, my family and my children's future. With success, come the riders. He says, My wife dreamt that one day I'd win an Oscar which I did. But after that I've been constantly traveling. The kids are growing up now and one of us has to look after them. I'm spending as much time with them as I can. Or trying to make them part of what I do so they can be with me. At the moment, Rahman has only one ambition. I want to be happy. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/2009082020090820034733343382e2d85/I-make-sure-my-hair-and-tie-are-in-place.html

[arr] Lonely in LA
By Subhash K Jha Posted On Saturday, August 01, 2009 at 02:16:30 AM Double Oscar winner AR Rahman's life has become super-hectic after his international win. This Chennai-based music composer who has been dividing his time between Chennai, Mumbai, London and Los Angeles, has now begun to miss the time he used to spend at home with his wife and children. So Rahman took a totally unscheduled break from his assignments in LA and was back in Chennai on Friday for two weeks. Confirming the news, Rahman said, The kids were always there with me when I worked regularly from home in Chennai. Now I get to spend less time with them. Even now when I'm here in Chennai, work for my pending Hindi films like Blue has to be taken care of. I've come at a time when I cannot afford to take a break. My first Hollywood soundtrack for Couples Retreat has to be ready because the film is releasing on October 6. Not that Rahman is complaining. He is used to being rushed. I always liked to work at my own pace and that hasn't changed. But now the volume and profile of the workload is so eclectic that I need to find more time to focus on the individual assignments more carefully. Yeah, it's a tough balancing act. But I'm enjoying myself. After I finish the soundtrack of Couples Retreat, which is 80 per cent complete, I've an artistes' album coming up. It is one of my biggest international challenges. It's too early to talk about it. But yes, it will involve musicians from all over the world and I'll be composing the music. Recently, I also got to work with the John Williams Orchestra and that was a dream-come-true. I guess my dreams are coming true, gushed Rahman. Rahman wants all his children to be adept at music. In fact, Rahman's son, Ameen, who has sung in Couples Retreat, attends Rahman's music academy in Chennai. Commenting on Ameen's early start, Rahman said, It's just a small part of a song in Couples Retreat. We found his voice to be suitable for it. And that's it. My son is certainly not embarking on a singing career at that age. He's just a child. He has so many things to do and achieve before he decides on a career. I think he should be allowed to do what he likes. The final call will be his. No peer pressure. Rahman returns to LA in the second week of August. Tease him about being Dr Rahman and he says, You will have to say the `Doctor' thrice, referring to the three doctorates that he has received since the Oscar triumph. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/2009080120090801021630453fa74c9bb/Lonely-in-LA.html
[arr] Like father, like son
Music maestro AR Rahman, who is one of the most celebrated personalities in the music world, has reason to be proud not only professionally but also personally. His six-and-a-half-year-old son, Alim, aspires to become a playback singer. And he is wasting no time to reach his goal. Last week, Alim sung a full song in the Hollywood film, Couples Retreat for which AR Rahman has composed the music. A source said, AR Rahman's family and people in his office have still not got over the fact that Rahman's little son has sung the song. They are very excited and happy and can't stop talking about it. His mom and dad are very proud of him. Couples Retreat is a romantic comedy directed by Peter Billingsley and stars Vince Vaughn, Kristen Bell and Jason Bateman in lead roles. Keeping with the lighthearted theme of the film, Rahman has composed a soothing and light score. The film is expected to release end 2009. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/20090729200907290320375621b3fea98/Like-father-like-son.html

[arr] No problem with A.R.Rahman: Gautham
Gautham Menon is trying to investigate who is behind rumours about his fall out with A.R Rahman? We caught up with the ace director for this conversation How is Vinnaithandi Varuvaayaprogressing? The film is moving at brisk pace. We are going to New York for a schedule where some crucial scenes of the film including climax will be shot. We also plan to shoot a song there. The rumour mill says that you had a fall-out with AR Rahman, the music director of the film. Please comment? Some vested interest has been spreading all kinds of lies that I have fallen out with Rahman over payment issues. On the contrary we are on the best of terms, as he has given outstanding music for VV. I will hand over the film to him in August and he will start re-recording and background score. We plan to release the film for Diwali. ARR has composed three extraordinary songs which have already been shot. They are of international quality and he will be recording the next two songs soon. When did you last meet Rahman? Recently, I met Rahman at his home in his Los Angeles and the first thing he asked me was about this baseless rumour doing the rounds. He asked me why people are writing such crap without checking facts with us. Let me tell you that Rahman signed Vinnaithaandi Varuvaya much before he won the Oscars, after hearing the script. He was impressed by the simple, feel-good love story. And after winning the Oscars and going truly International, he did not increase his fee as he knows the Tamil film market and the logistics more than anyone. Can you elaborate on the songs? Hosanaa, sung by Vijay Prakash ( Jai Ho.. fame) with Thamarai's lyrics and a rap by Blaze will be a sure hit among the young crowd for its peppy beats and stunning visuals shot by Manoj Paramahamsa at Malta with stylized choreography by Flexy Stu. The second song Omana Penne written by Thamarai and sung by A R Rahman himself, holds a style of its own. What is the budget of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaya? We have shot the film on a large scale and the budget will be around 14 Crore. It is a big budget film shot in some exotic locales of New York, Malta and Kerala. It is a stylishly shot love story. Both Simbu and Trisha have a new look in the film? Simbu has 2 or 3 looks in the film. Trisha looks fresh and wears mostly cotton saris in the film. After Minnale, it will be my next out and out love story with outstanding music, a feel good romantic entertainer . http://sify.com/movies/tamil/fullstory.php?id=14900135

He is, in fact, one of the few people to hardly raise his remuneration, explained the director. The film has six songs, Gautham explained This is the first film of Gautham Menon's with a music director apart from Harris Jayaraj. Rahman was said to compose the music for Gautham's Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikaalam and it is now learnt that the composer might be using tunes from that film in Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya. Chennaiyil Oru mazhaikaalam, which began more than a year ago with Trisha in the lead, is said to be shelved Shoot for most part of Vinnaithaandi Varvaaya has been completed, with only one schedule said to be remaining. [arr] [Semi ARR] Audio release of Blue in August
Kylie Minogue made much news when she was in India earlier this year to sing and shoot a song in Bollywood film Blue and the Australian pop sensation is now set to return in August to promote the movie, says director Tony D'Cruz. On June 12, she was seen having dinner with Blue director at La Estella, an Italian restaurant in London. The two have apparently become good friends and are in constant touch with each other. Yes, Kylie and I did have dinner together. I was on the way back from South Africa after watching an IPL (Indian Premier league) match when I stopped in London to do Kylie's dubbing in Blue. She invited me for dinner at this wonderful, cosy restaurant. Her mother and manager were also there. Kylie is a truly wonderful and genuine person, said Tony. He also confirmed that the pop star will be back in India in August. We're getting her down to Mumbai again for the music release of Blue. After all she has not only acted, she has also sung in Blue. The details are now being worked (out), he said. Blue is a multi-starrer that has Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Katrina Kaif, Zayed Khan and Lara Dutta in keyroles. Tony's next project has John Abraham and Sonal Chauhan but he says he wouldn't mind working with Kylie once again. Where I go from here depends on how Blue performs when it's released in October, the director said. http://sify.com/movies/fullstory.php?id=14896258

[arr] Cashing in on Rahmans fame?
By Subhash K Jha Posted On Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 02:18:34 AM The much-hyped `authorised biography' on AR Rahman titled AR Rahman: The Musical Storm has hit a sour note even before its release. The book by Kamini Mathai has been widely hyped and marketed as the `first authorised biography' on the `Mozart of Madras.' However, the desi Mozart is neither flattered nor amused. He very clearly states that there's nothing authorised about it. Says Rahman, The claim that it's an authorised biography is wrong. According to sources close to Rahman, the musician is not amused by various attempts to cash in on his global fame. Says a close friend of Rahman, Though Rahman is oblivious to the outside world and doesn't understand the commercial aspects of his superstardom, he isn't oblivious to the `Cash in on Rahman' factory that flourishes far and wide. As far as a biography is concerned, Rahman plans to write his own story. So the question of authorising a biography doesn't arise. And that is that. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/2009061020090610021834758375b4c41/Cashing-in-on-Rahman%E2%80%99s-fame.html
[arr] [Semi ARR] Rock and role
After shuffling the dates of his film Rockstar for three years, Imtiaz Ali has finally decided to make the film with Ranbir Kapoor. The film was earlier launched in 2006 with John Abraham, but it was shelved immediately. Giving us a chronological record of events, a source said, Imtiaz wanted to make Rockstar with John immediately after Socha Na Tha, which released in March 2005. He had even put one of his films titled Geet on hold for Rockstar. He also had several sessions with Rockstar's music director AR Rahman, who had composed a few songs for the film. The film was to be produced by UTV Motion Pictures. However, the film failed to materialise. Imtiaz then planned to make a film with Akshay Kumar, which too didn't work out. Meanwhile, Geet, which was earlier to be made with Bobby Deol and Preity Zinta, was remade as Jab We Met with Shahid Kapur and Kareena Kapoor. After Jab We Met released in 2007, Imtiaz planned to make a film with Eros starring Hrithik Roshan which is still under consideration. After these unsuccessful attempts, Imtiaz has now finally decided to revive Rockstar with Astavinayak. Chief creative officer of UTV Rampage Motion Pictures, Ram Mirchandani agreed that they had earlier planned to make Rockstar in 2006. We were working with Imtiaz Ali on the film, but unfortunately it didn't work out at that time for various reasons. Commenting on reviving the film with Ranbir, Imtiaz said, I met Ranbir and we discussed the possibility of working together. However, we have not zeroed in on any subject just as I haven't done with Hrithik either. Ranbir said, Not true. I am only doing Rajniti, Rocket Singh and Siddharth Anand's next. [arr] The world is his oyster
By Subhash K Jha Posted On Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 02:34:16 AM It's official now. AR Rahman will soon be establishing his base in Los Angeles. He is currently in the process of buying a place where he can set up a full-fledged office in the mecca of movies and music. Thanks to his ever-growing popularity, Rahman now lives his life in suitcases. He confirmed this and said, I now have four separate teams in four cities Chennai, LA, London and Mumbai. Strangely Rahman's scores back home have slowed down on their own. Commenting on what happens to his work at home, the busy composer said, Kamal Haasan's Marmayogi got postponed after I did four songs with him. So, I got some reprieve. Then recently I was in Mumbai and Mani Ratnam flew down to record a song. That's the way he likes to work. Even during Bombay he would fly down to Mumbai for the music as he likes the city's energy. Almost all of the background score of Bombay was done in Mumbai. Even the songs of Rang De Basanti were recorded in Mumbai. Rahman doesn't buy the theory that he has done far better work than Slumdog Millionaire. Who is to decide this? For the West, it is a change of sound and pace. In India I hear people saying, 'Rahman has done much better work than Slumdog.' But beauty lies in the ears of the beholder. And the West loves the film's soundtrack, he said. Coming back to composing music for Hollywood, Rahman added, The actor Vince Vaughn met me recently and asked me to do the score in one of his films. That was a touching moment. I start work on this project in July. I didn't set out to redefine myself with Slumdog Millionaire. It just happened. For me it's important for my whole team to be happy with my music. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/20090526200905260234165526c5152a5/The-world-is-his-oyster.html
[arr] Rahman summons Rekha
By Subhash K Jha Posted On Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 02:12:26 AM Rekha Bhardwaj, known for the depth in her voice in songs like Namak ishq ka (Omkara) and Genda phool (Delhi 6), was recently called to Chennai to do a rescue act for AR Rahman. Initially, another singer was asked to sing the song Ranjhna ranjha written by Gulzar and composed by Rahman for Mani Ratnam's Raavana. But when she failed to rise to the occasion, Rekha was asked to do the needful. She said, Yes, I had to leave for Chennai at short notice. I was called along with Gulzar saab and Shaad Ali (who's assisting Mani in Raavana). Rekha said that she enjoyed singing for someone other than husband Vishal. But I wish I was given more time to prepare and absorb the song, she said. Gulzar said, We recorded a thumri composed by Rahman. The good thing about this semi-classical number is that it is sung by Rekha, who is like my daughter. I think it's her first song for Mani. Rekha has been trained by the renowned classical vocalist Pandit Amarnathji. She really knows her job. Rahman's score in the film is unique, said Gulzar. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/200905162009051602122627526de678/Rahman-summons-Rekha.html
[arr] Farhan Akhtar to sing for a song in Blue
Out of the Blue Farhan Akhtar to sing for AR Rahman in Blue; this will be his first song for another actor By Parag Maniar Posted On Friday, May 15, 2009 at 02:21:44 AM Farhan Akhtar can't stop smiling these days. Don't blame him. He received a call from Oscar winner AR Rahman, who asked him to sing for him for the film Blue. Caught completely off guard by the call, it took time for Farhan to realise that it was indeed Rahman who was talking to him on the phone. A source said, Rahman told Farhan that his voice suits a `cool' number that he wanted him to record for Blue. Farhan, of course, agreed immediately. It was too good an offer to resist. In fact, Farhan and Rahman met two days ago and spoke at length about the song. Farhan, who is currently shooting for Kartik Calling Kartik, is looking forward to the recording. Confirming the news, Farhan said, I am damn excited about singing for Rahman. I have been a great admirer of his work and have thoroughly enjoyed his music. Our meeting was wonderful. Rahman said that he decided to use my voice for his composition in Blue after he heard the Rock On!! album. He was extremely soft-spoken and humble and spoke about how the past few months have been a whirlwind ride for him. He also briefed me about the song but I don't know whether it will be right on my part to reveal anything about it. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/2009051520090515022144541cd66ea2b/Out-of-the-Blue.html

[arr] AR Rahman to meet the Rolling Stones lead vocalist, Mick Jagger, for a tie-up
A few days ago, we told you how AR Rahman sneaked in and out of Mumbai. We also told you that he flew off to the US. The latest on A R Rahman's US planner is that he is going to meet Mick Jagger, the Golden-Globe-and-Grammy-Award-winning English singer-songwriter, rock musician and occasional actor, best known for his work as lead vocalist of The Rolling Stones. A source confirmed, After winning the Oscar (for Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire), Rahman has acquired international status and has been exploring tie-ups with a few international artistes and Mick Jagger heads the list. Rahman will have a jamming session with Jagger. In fact, this will be their second jamming session. The two had a trial jamming session when Rahman was in the US for the Oscars last month. [arr] AR Rahman sneaked into Mumbai to record for Abbas Tyrewalas 1-800-Love
Look! Who was in town By Subhash K Jha Posted On Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 02:18:49 AM AR Rahman Ever since his spectacular win at the Oscar's, ace music composer AR Rahman has been shying away from the public glare and had gone into a self-imposed hibernation in Chennai. Rahman's sabbatical has come to an end now, with him getting back to composing music in a big way. All of last week he was engaged in music sessions with director Abbas Tyrewala for his next film 1-800-Love. Rahman not only managed to complete the entire score for Blue, which had been pending for quite some time now, but also sneaked out of Chennai to Delhi on Monday afternoon to visit the Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah. He then flew to Mumbai yesterday to record a song for Tyrewala's 1-800-Love. With that taken care of, he headed for a long delayed trip to the US. 1-800-Love producer Madhu Mantena said, Abbas wanted the music of our film to take off before Rahman took off. So he specially requested him to fly to the US via Mumbai. The song sung by Adnan Sami was recorded in utmost secrecy so that Rahman could be out of Mumbai and the country, even before the city woke up to his presence. http://www.mumbaimirror.com/article/30/2009041620090416021848783be80597c/Look-Who-was-in-town.html
