[arr] Jodha Akbar is a classic..isn't it?
I have watched this movie about 3 times, including in big IMAX screen ( i know its not an IMAX film, still here the theatre guys show an zoomed in version in the IMAX screen) After a long time this movie Jodha Akbar grows on you. I have been watching the movie almost everyweek when it comes on TV and it seems perfect in all ways except aishwarya's acting. The music, Lyrics and BGMs are top quality. I think its one of the very rare films which is has very rich lyrics supported by equally brilliant compositions. And there are so many saperate pieces composed in BGMs unlike rehashes of tunes from the soundtrack which rahman does quite often. I think overall its a classic. what say? regards wb
Re: [arr] Jodha Akbar is a classic..isn't it?
WB, I completely agree with you. I have watched the movie twice, and I also feel that its a fine film indeed. In fact, I would go one step further and say that even Aishwarya's acting was top notch. She was characterized perfectly, and depicted in an apt manner. Abt the music, well we all know how good the music is...So need I add any more?..:) Anish. [arr] Jodha Akbar and A R Rahman register early wins at IIFA
MACAU: Ashutosh Gowariker's epic love story, 'Jodha Akbar' swept the music and technical awards at the International Indian Film Academy extravaganza here on Saturday as A R Rahman continued his winning streak. Double Oscar winner Rahman won in the Best Music Direction and Best Background Score category while fellow Academy award winner Resul Pookutty got a nod in Best Sound Recording category for Ghajini. The Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer bagged three awards in the musical category and took home five in the technical section. Pookutty gave an emotional acceptance speech but Rahman had to miss the ceremony due to professional commitments. It is very intimidating for a recording artist like me to receive an award in front of thousands of people. I dedicate this award to S K Sreedhar who was a mentor to both me and Rahman, Pookutty said. Singer Javed Ali's 'Jashan-e-Baharaa' from 'Jodhaa Akbar' won him the trophy in the Best Playback Singer (Male) category and Javed Akhtar won in the Best Lyrics category for the same song. Singer Shreya Ghoshal won the Best Singer (Female) award for her rendition of 'Teri Ore' in 'Singh Is Kinng'. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/World/Rest-of-World/Jodha-Akbar-and-A-R-Rahman-register-early-wins-at-IIFA/articleshow/4653083.cms Rαнмαη ƒє√єr™ ♫♫ His Music ~ My Mother Tongue Own a website.Get an unlimited package.Pay next to nothing.*Go to http://in.business.yahoo.com/

[arr] Jodha Akbar stands out as a lavish historical
2008 was a year of exploration for Bollywood. Very few movies hewed to the cliched formula of rich boy/poor girl/disapproving parents that the industry has been mercilessly lampooned for over the years. The introduction of corporate entities in funding and the economics of the multiplex made it possible for young filmmakers to make smaller, more experimental movies and be assured of a reasonable amount of success. Stars like Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan sat on the bench this year, allowing younger talent to emerge. It feels like the era of the superstar may be over, which is probably not a bad thing for the future of the Hindi movie industry. it also feels like the hegemony of big studios has been disrupted , with big showy films with known leads tanking at the box office. Bollywood went back to the drawing board this year, looking for good scripts and low-key, non-intrusive direction. Directors un-apologetically made urban movies, (which may explain the unexpected success of the lone rural movie - *Welcome to Sajjanpur*.) Not all the experiments were successes. Many low-budget movies, made with the best of intentions, tanked at the box-office. There was *Dasvidaniya*, the Vinay Pathak starrer and *The Last Lear*, a self-indulgent movie that did not succeed despite the presence of Amitabh, who also starred in another low-key dud, *Bhootnath*. Still, the industry deserves an E for effort. If the trend is towards strong scripts filmed on lesser-known actors, I am all for it. It is about time we created our Pacinos, Hoffmans and De Niros. Here are the top 5 movies of 2008 in ascending order - 5. http://waternoice.com/wp-content/uploads/jodha-akbar.jpg*Jodha Akbar* - Ashutosh Gowarikar's paean to the best loved Mughal emperor, *Jodha Akbar*stands out as a lavish historical that worked, mostly due to the gorgeous Hrithik Roshan, who transformed people's idea of Akbar from a podgy, stodgy medieval ruler to a character straight from the cover of a romantic fantasy. The battle scenes were beautifully shot and the chemistry between Hrithik and Aishwarya as Jodha kept the long movie from getting tedious. Even though the existence of Jodha is historically suspect, audiences took their kids along to give them a history lesson come to life. 4. http://waternoice.com/wp-content/uploads/jaane-tu.jpg*Jaane Tu…ya jaane na** *- Talented scriptwriter Abbas Tyrewalla made his directing debut with this movie, a sweet college+ romance that introduced us to another talented member of Aamir Khan's family, the innocent looking Imran Khan. With a perfect musical score by Rahman and a wholesome script, the movie got great word-of-mouth and did very well at the box office. Imran later attempted to play against his chocolatey looks in *Kidnap*, but that movie sank without a trace. 3. http://waternoice.com/wp-content/uploads/rock-on.jpg*Rock On* - Bollywood's first movie about a rock band which did not devolve into a Mithun Chakraborty parody, *Rock On* was a surprisingly intelligent movie made by Abhishek Kapoor, with director Farhan Akhtar( *Dil Chahta Hai, Don*) in front of the camera as the lead. The excellent script and subdued direction made me go back and check out the director's previous movie, * Aryan*, which turned out to be tolerable and could have made waves if cast better. Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy's authentic rock music gave the movie a lot of credibility, though I could have done without the actors singing their own songs. Remember how you always felt you could do a good job singing Hindi songs in a Karaoke bar? In this case, you really can do better than the actual singers! 2. http://waternoice.com/wp-content/uploads/a_wednesday_poster1.jpg*A Wednesday* - A bona-fide thriller in the mould of *The Negotiator*, a Samuel Jackson/Kevin Spacey movie, *A Wednesday* was remarkable because it cast Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah as the leads, a risky proposition at the box office. A gripping plot and terrific ensemble acting elevated this low-budget production to one of the best movies to emerge out of Bollywood this year . With a terrorism infused plot that is enormously relevant in the current environment, it would be great if *A Wednesday* made the shortlist for Oscar entries from India. 1. http://waternoice.com/wp-content/uploads/slumdog1.jpg*Slumdog Milionaire* - Though this movie was directed by an Englishman, *Slumdog Millionaire* is pure Bollywood. Danny Boyle perfectly captures the masala-infused atmosphere of Mumbai, where slums and high-rises coexist uneasily, where a chaiwalla can dream of being a millionaire. A.R. Rahman once again demonstrates his brilliance with a score that is jangly and discordant at times, electric at others, making it an integral part of the fast-paced action adventure. The high-octane drama also captured the imagination of the venerable folks over at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood and it is generating Oscar buzz.

Of the several songs in the album, I like two songs much, and one of them intensely. One of the songs which I like in this album is Khwaja Mere Khwaja, which is a Sufi number rendered immaculately by Rahman in his own voice (the veteran director is really putting his voice to the test a lot more these days, which is nice to see) and rendered to the sound of harmoniums, clapping and a lilting, rhythmic, periodic base (as is typical of Islamic music). The song that I really have my kudos saved up for, is *Manmohana*. Atmospheric, mysterious, deep and reflecting a sense of separation and sadness, this number more than ever exemplifies why Rahman is a great artist equally with numbers based on classical tunes and ragas and rapidly approaching his proficiency in rendering westernized tunes to mass audiences. There are so many great things about this song, that it makes me want to list them down, so here I go: 1. *Bela Shende's voice. *Excellent effort, reaching very high pitches that only a very well trained female voice can achieve. Great vocals throughout the song, but particularly in the alapanas, where the choicest parts of Sindhu Bhairavi seem to have been cherry-picked and rendered to create an atmosphere of perfection, mystery and ennui. 2. *The mysterious flute.* Just another of the aspects of the song which create an atmosphere of mystery,Rahman's use of the flute here is exemplary. 3. *The rhythm synthesizer *(presumably)*. *Rahman and synthesizer music usually go hand-in-hand. What stands out in this song is the level of complementarity that has been achieved between the flute, the vocals and the onset and fade of the deep rhythms. If I were to list one part of the song which could have been better, I would say that it could have been ended on a better note (literally). The song starts off opulently and trails off nonchalantly, which alludes to certain moods. Sadly the ending of the song doesn't maintain the atmosphere created by the rest of it, or transcend to another style or terminate it gracefully - it just whittles away, and that's the only thing about this song which could have been better. Even here, Bela Shende's voice stands out. However, the ending could have been more ornamented, perhaps with the tabla beats coming through until the end. I tried playing this song on my guitar (as I try with nearly every song I like these days) and managed to get parts of the song right, even though I cannot admit that a guitar rendition would do justice to the elaborate mental landscapes created by the song. I enjoyed playing the song of course, but not as much as I enjoyed listening to it or humming it. Anyhow, there's always room for improvement with the guitar, and tomorrow's another day, so to speak. Although this is nice to see, what you see in PB are the most recommended songs, not a chart. JB music has done very well, but is now slipping as per bollyvista (now at #4). Regardless, it does show that Mr. Tootsie Pop was wrong about his predictions for JA music being a flop and his review has been panned and discredited due to his blatant biases. --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Dhruv Shenoy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Despite Pritam's Jannat,Race . The characters are not lost in the grand sets, the grand moments of history nor in the grand battles. The movie is just as comfortable with the internal scenes inside a dark, closed room as it is with large war scenes with thousands of extras and elephants and horses and the clanging of shield and sword. Aside from Aishwarya and Hrithik, the cast includes *Sonu Sood*, *Ila Arun* (the very same woman who sang *Resham Ka Ruhmaal* and *Choli Ke Peeche*), *Kulbhushan Kharbanda* and *Nikitin Dheer*, carrying on Ashu's tradition of using big names for only the leads. The divine music is by *A.R. Rehman* with the poetry of *Javed Akhtar*. Jalaluddin (Roshan) is the first Mughal emperor to be born in Hindustan itself. Thus, he has a deep love for his country and its people and wants his people to practice whichever religion they choose since the people are mostly Hindu and the rulers are mostly Muslim. Raja Bharmal (Kharbanda) rules Amer, and agrees to rule under Jalaluddin, much to the chagrin of the other rulers. To solidify this deal, Raja Bharmal offers the hand of his daughter Jodhaa (Rai Bachchan) to Jalaluddin. She agrees to the marriage only if Jalaluddin lets her keep her Hindu beliefs and if he builds her a temple in her chambers. Admiring her straightforward nature, Jalaluddin agrees. This marriage is scandalous, alerting Maham Anga (Arun), Jalaluddin's nanny/most trusted minister and Sujamal (Sood), Jodhaa's cousin-brother/best friend. Sujamal, on a campagin to rule Amer, joins Sharifuddin (Dheer) to take down Jalaluddin, who now has won the favor of the people. They honor him by giving him the title Akbar (I'm not sure if this is just a name or if it means something. Jalaluddin is his given name as in, when he was born, his parents said, And he shall be named Jalaluddin.) How Jalaluddin sees through the treachery of Maham Anga, wins the heart of Jodhaa and conquers the rebellious Sharifuddin forms this tale of love, war, deception and religious tolerance. Ashu makes some bold artistic choices. Choices that make a viewer ask: Did he just go there? But, in the end, the movie is better for it. For instance, in any other movie by any other director starring any other actor, showing Jalaluddin completely entranced by the Sufi singers (in JA's loveliest song, *Khwaja Mere Khwaja*) would be almost laughable. But here it works. Because we know that Jalaluddin holds his faith very dear to his heart as well as his patron Khwaja, or saint. Also, Ashu and *Haidar Ali*write very interesting scenes for the blanks in the history book. Most amusing are the scenes showing the Mughals baffled by Jodhaa's Hindu practices or the subtle, adorable courtship between Jalaluddin and Jodhaa. Also, the scene where Jalaluddin travels through the Amer market, dressed as a nobody is key in showcasing Jalaluddin as a good ruler and why he deserves the title Akbar. The Rajput feast is a great sequence as is the scene where Jalaluddin punishes his traitorous foster brother Adham Khan. Basically, the movie is full of exciting scenes and great dialouges. You really only feel the weight of the running time right before the intermission but that's only because that part of the movie is full of great intermission points and Ashu chose the greatest. (The moon reflected in the lake being the o in intermission was just classic.) *Jodhaa Akbar* can be seen as India's answer to the countless Greco-Roman stories being produced by America these days. The battle sequences have half the gore but maybe a third more the impact. This is because JA has real, live men battling each other not CGI clones. Also, these battle sequences include animals which just make things more awesome. Seeing an elephant crush a man is pretty cool even for me. I mean, normally I find battle scenes boring and I'm like, Please just get to the drama and the romance! Jeez! But these battles are exciting and original. They are not only well-choreographed but expertly performed by Hrithik and Sonu and Nikitin and Aishwarya. Yes, you read that right. Aishwarya gets two awesome, spectacular sword fights. And I know that it was really her and not just a double because a) her work in *The Last Legion* and b) her eyes are visible almost at all times in her fight with Sonu and her face is visible during her fight with Hrithik. Speaking of Mr. Suzanne Khan, his climactic fight

In case you haven't noticed, (according to BOI - Anantha Narayanan has clarified that that's his source ), Race has sold 300,000 more copies than JA. I am complaining because I am of the opinion that more JA albums were sold (even in the North) than listed in that chart and certainly not such a huge gap between Race and JA. I don't think rounding up numbers to the nearest 100,000 is very professional either. Give us the exact numbers if you've got them (referring to BOI here). Also honestly, I feel a bit cheated that people would buy an album from a composer who has blatantly lifted tunes (Pehli Nazar for example) from others and called it his own work, over a JA. P.S: Btw, I don't understand the way those numbers are expressed, 9,00,000= 900,000 right? This helped the other films to gain an advantage against the Brilliant Jodha Akbar's music. We need to change this trend. If the persons who are making the films with music by our Boss, and they ignore what the music can get the initial break, we the ARRahman Fans can make a difference. We will have to initiate broad-spread campaigns to make our Boss's deserving music on top of charts. ~ Gomzy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Buff, 9 lacks is written as 9,00,000 in India and not 900 thousand. If audience in north east could not understand adhere to the experimentation of sounds produced by arr, they cannot relish it fully which is why chances are more for their regular bollywood picks. But if you see the tabulation in this blog link JA ranks 1st in West South areas whereas 2nd in North East areas. Taking 50-50 equation, overall ranking should be both JA Race should share No.1 position to the chart shown based on regional sales. However, Promos play vital role in sales specially during audio launch period. If north east fail in their efforts to the fullest in exhibiting promos properly, such results will happen. [arr] Jodha Akbar goes South
Ashutosh Gowariker's epic romance *Jodha Akbar* will now be seen in down south. Tamil audiences who saw Bollywood's hottest pair Aishwarya Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan sizzle in the dubbed version of *Dhoom 2* will once again hear them speak in Tamil. The Hindi version of *Jodha Akbar*, which was released world wide three weeks ago is said to have collected around Rs 70 crore with Chennai alone making grand collections crossing the Rs 65 lakh mark. With 60 prints in Tamil, the producers are certain that the dubbed version of the movie will draw in more audiences, especially those who had trouble understanding dialogues, which had a light dose of Urdu. We believe they are superstars here also. They are well known across the country and well known in the south and we want to cash on that, said Henry, Distribution Head (South), UTV Motion Pictures. The music of the film has been scored by the Mozart of the south, A R Rehman. He has worked his magic in the dubbed version as well. A bonus will certainly be a grand release of this movie in Telugu following a star studded premiere in Hyderabad, which will be attended by none other than the cast and crew of *Jodha Akbar* including Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Bachchan, A R Rehman and the man himself who has created box office history, Ashutosh Gowariker. http://www.ndtvmovies.com/newstory.asp?section=MoviesSlug=Jodhaa+Akbar+goes+southId=ENTEN20080043199 -- regards, Vithur AIMING TO BE A TRUE RAHMANIAC

[arr] Jodha Akbar in Tamil Telugu
Jodhaa Akbar now set to release in Tamil and Telugu IndiaGlitz [Sunday, March 02, 2008] UTV Motion Pictures' and Ashutosh Gowariker Production's epic romance 'Jodhaa Akbar' starring Hrithik Roshan Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will now be released in Tamil and Telugu on 7th March. A grand star-studded premiere is planned at PVR in Hyderabad, for which the lead cast and crew including Ronnie Screwvala, Ashutosh Gowariker, Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Haider Ali, Kiiran Deohans, Nitin Desai and of course music maestro A. R. Rahman, will be attending. Jodhaa Akbar has created history at the box office and is on a record-breaking spree; when one looks at the fact the film's length restricts it to three shows a day vis-a-vis the standard four shows, as well as the fact that the film has not been screened in Rajasthan, the box office collections are the highest ever, with phenomenal overseas collections as well. Not only has the film garnered one of the biggest openings all across but has managed to sustain its top spot even as it enters its third week. UTV Motion Pictures and Ashutosh Gowariker Productions are releasing this magnum opus in Tamil and Telugu with 65 prints in Telugu and 60 prints in Tamil. This marks the first time for a Hindi film to host a premier for a dubbed version, and that too on such a grand scale. Jodhaa Akbar is a sixteenth century love story about a marriage of alliance between the greatest Mughal emperor that ruled Hindustan, Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar, and the fiery young Rajput princess, Jodhaa. http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/hindi/article/36977.html -- regards, Vithur AIMING TO BE A TRUE RAHMANIAC

The audio, that has been released recently, is doing well, say sources. The film has turned out to be a super-hit, especially in the overseas market where it is doing terrific business aided by favourable reviews from the foreign press. The domestic revenue too has been above average considering that the film has not been released in Rajasthan and has been banned in Madhya Pradesh and certain other areas. The Hindi version, released two weeks back, has so far collected 65 lakhs from Chennai alone. This is indeed quite a feat, considering the film's running time of 3 hours and 30 minutes. However, UTV is planning to release a more tightly-edited version. The dubbed version would be released across Tamil Nadu on 6th of March. -- regards, Vithur AIMING TO BE A TRUE RAHMANIAC

[arr] Jodha Akbar - A Saga losing focus
http://dearcinema.com/jodhaa-akbar-a-saga-losing-focus/ Jodhaa Akbar did not quite live up to my expectations. There were grand sets, glittering jewelries and dazzling costumes, representing the Mughal and the Rajput royalty in an elegant way. But what was lacking is the track by which one can follow the film through, writes *Pranjal Medhi* [image: Jodhaa Akbar: A Saga Losing Focus]http://dearcinema.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/jodha-akbar-3.JPGIt was a warm sunny afternoon of January, 2006. I stepped into the Khar Office of Ashutosh Gowarikar. The reason was to capture a formal interview of the reputed director, which eventually took the form of a casual chat. We already knew that he is into his next venture. Jodhaa Akbar was just planned then, the pre-production work had just begun, although it was keeping Mr Gowarikar quite busy. I understand that making a film is not a joke. Despite the time crunch, he spent almost two hours with us and also treated us with a sealed pack of my favorite Fererro Rocher. Wow, what a nice man he is, I thought. While our off-the-camera chat was on, I casually asked him, When can we expect your next venture AKBAR JODHAA? Quite protective about his baby, he instantly corrected me, It's 'Jodhaa Akbar', not 'Akbar Jodhaa'. We are going to name it like that only. I could clearly see the passion in his eyes for his new venture at that time, and that is the reason why I was expecting so much from this flick. Well, just to mention, I liked Lagaan and specially Swades, which was great story-telling with an ardor to aesthetics and technical aspects. In the same line, I anticipated this new venture to be an epic after a long wait of two years. But, Jodhaa Akbar did not quite live up to my expectations. There were grand sets, glittering jewelries and dazzling costumes, representing the Mughal and the Rajput royalty in an elegant way. But what was lacking is the track by which one can follow the film through. There was no single area of focus where the film concentrates and carries the narrative ahead. I was so confused whether the film is about the eternal love story of Rajput princess Jodhaa and the young emperor Jalaluddin Akbar or about Jalaluddin's transformation to Akbar the Great. Whether it was about the rivalries among the Rajput kingdoms or a showcase of Hrithik's bulging muscles and his proficiency in sword-fighting. There were lots of nicely shot and edited sequences individually, but then when they were all put together, the final product is too lengthy (or should we call it loose?) and speckled. The childhood sequence of Jodha was nice, but then I read in a Bollywood tabloid that a few scenes were axed by the distributors, which included this childhood sequence. I still don't know whether I saw the full version or the axed part, but it is too unethical of the distributors to cut off the final print just for their whims and fancies. Business is an integral part of a film, but to axe it is destruction or distortion of someone's piece of creation. The director deserves accolade for executing some great flawless scenes. I was particularly struck by the scene in which Akbar tames a wild elephant. It was so real that anyone would actually feel the jeopardy that Hrithik goes through while filming it. Another scene worth mentioning is the beautifully choreographed sword-fight sequence between Jodhaa and Akbar. It is an ultimate poetic expression of love at its artistic best by the director. Hrithik stands out in the challenging role of Jalaluddin Mohammed Akbar. Under sharp eyes of comparison with the likes of Prithviraj Kapoor, Hrithik leaves no stone unturned to get into the skin of the Mughal emperor. It was rather tough for him as the role has two sides of the coin, an eternal lover and an emperor. But he portrays it very convincingly and young, handsome Akbar comes to life with Hrithik Roshan. If we talk about body language, Prithviraj Kapoor (Mughal-e-Azam) used to put his hands on his back while standing, a clear illustration of royalty and pride. Here too, Hrithik keeps his hands folded on his chest while addressing someone, carrying a message of great power and responsibility. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is looking almost believable in the role of the Rajput princess Jodhaa. The costume also plays a significant role in providing a periodic look to the character. Her acting comes as quite natural, at par with that of Hrithik's, we can say. Both are excellent in sword-fight sequences and that's one thing that would stun all. Coming back to performances, most of the characters were convincing, especially those of Sonu Sood (Sujamal), Poonam Sinha (Akbar's mother), and Suhasini Mulay (Jodha's mother). Technically the film raises the bar of the way films are being shot in India. With a huge budget, the high production value is very much prominent. The cinematography was superb, putting aesthetics into perspective. Kiran Deohans has proved his mettle in cinematography with

above all comes the magic of AR Rahman. His music works very well to build and sustain the mood that Ashutosh Gowariker intended for the film.Rahman's music is spectacular, bracing, pleasant and different. He is the one who dominated every one and every thing else present on the screen..the stars, huge sets or the thousands of extras on the screen are second to his music. Review:: Story: Set in the sixteenth century, this epic romance begins as a marriage of alliance between two cultures and religions, for political gain, with King Bharmal of Amer giving his daughter Jodha's(Aishwarya Rai) hand to Emperor jalaluddin muhammad Akbar(Hrithik Roshan). When Jalaluddin accepts the marriage proposal, little does he know that in his efforts to strengthen his relations with the Rajputs, he would in turn be embarking on a new journey- the journey of true love. From the battlefield where the young Jalaluddin was crowned, through the conquests that won him the title of Akbar the Great, to winning the love of the beautiful Jodhaa. Jodhaa Akbar traces the impressive graph of the mighty emperor and his romance with defiant princess. Highlights: From the director of Lagaan comes another 'classic' in the name of Jodha Akbar. The director succeeded in delivering a sensible romantic drama on an exuberant scale. Hrithik looks impressive as Young emperor Jalaluddin.Hrithik gives subtle performance. Jodhaa is the perfect role for the beautiful Aishwarya Rai.No one can think about some other name for this role.Ash is just like a Mughal painting. Costumes by Nita lulla are awesome. The sets by Nitin Desai were a treat to the eye so is the cinematography by Kiran deohans. and above all comes the magic of AR Rahman. Sidelights: The duration of this film is very lengthy (3 hours 30mins) Narration is slow.First half is a bit boring though the second half is good. Public Talk: Good but slow and lengthy.Worth a watch. Industry Talk:Decent hit but may not be as huge as expected. http://www.oniondosa.net/reviews/Jodha-Akbar.htm

http://www.apunkachoice.com/scoop/bollywood/20080220-4.html *'Jodhaa Akbar' triumphs abroad *20th Feb 2008 20.44 IST By ApunKaChoice Living up to its name, Ashutosh Gowarikar's film Jodhaa Akbarhttp://www.apunkachoice.com/dyn/movies/hindi/jodhaa_akbar/is doing great business overseas. Despite its running time (close to three and half hours), the film has been received very well by viewers in USA, UK and the Gulf. http://media.fastclick.net/w/click.here?sid=18489m=6c=1 At the US box-office, the film released with a record number of prints (135) and opened at 19th spot on the charts, raking in a decent Rs. 6.4 crore in its run over the weekend. The film got the second highest opening ever to a Bollywood film in the US after Om Shanti Omhttp://www.apunkachoice.com/dyn/movies/hindi/om_shanti_om/last year. At the UK box-office, 'Jodhaa Akbar' released on 46 screens. The movie made it to the top ten charts and raked in about Rs. 2.8 crores in its run over the weekend. In other countries too, 'Jodhaa Akbar' did not disappoint. In the gulf, it made upto Rs 1.8 crore. In Australia it made Rs. 50 lakh. At home, in India, the film is performing as per expectations despite being panned by a few critics. Reportedly, the film has made Rs. 25 crore. Trade experts believe that the film may not turn out to be a one-week wonder and will have a long run due to the absence of any strong opposition at the box-office for an entire month. -- regards, Vithur AIMING TO BE A TRUE RAHMANIAC

Re: [arr] [Jodha Akbar - After watching 2nd time] - BGM of life time
Hey Man, You sound amazing. Seems, the experiences will last lifetime.I am still drooled over the music of the movie, but yes, I'll watch on the computer as soon as the original DVD is out. That way, I'll have access to all the background music scores. By the way, in case you do not know - the movie has been delayed by around 50 days, as AR Rahman wanted to give some special treatment on the background music score. Pravinder Sheoran [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi All, I watched the movie second time with perhaps the worst audience ever. They did not have any respect for history or director or actors or music director. Many people were involved in making comments on serious scenes, making fun of songs and all that. But it also gave me a chance to see the real effect of Direction and music direction. I still can not forget when Khwaja Mere Khwaja song came all the audience was stuck to their seats. While Azim-o-shan shehanshah came audience was shocked and the effect of the song was so hard on them that none of those fun making guys even moved from their seats till the movie finished. Coming to the BGM now: Many things go unnoticed when you see the movie first time but second time makes it crystal clear. Rahman Saab has outdone himself and the background score of Jodhaa Akbar is perhaps the best of all his work till date; and i am sure will always be remembered as a landmark and will be an inspiration to millions of other composers. A few things about BGM: 1. SITAR pieces: Oh my god, i have not listened to anything like this before. I think some Raga is played on Sitar many times in the movie. Whenever its played it takes your breath away. I think after Naushad Saab no one has used Sitar in such magnificent way. If Naushad Saab was alive, he surely would have praised ARR with 1000 words. 2. ARABIC pieces: ARR Sir, i do not know if God exists or not but when i listened your Arabic instrumental pieces in JA, i surely felt God somewhere near me. How can you use almost every instrument with such a perfection. Oh god those divine tunes will haunt me forever. 3. Jashn-e-bahara vocals and instrumentals: I have started liking the song and singer 100 times more than before since i have heard that vocals only piece. You could feel the pain in the voice. You can feel love in the air whenever the instruments of the song start. 4. Man mohana: Remember the ending of the song, the slow paced vocals, those are used at one place where Akbar is going in slow motion thinking about Jodhaa (And he imagines her singing the end lines of man mohana song). Ultimate piece of communication between Ashutosh and ARR. 5. In Lamhon ke daman Maain instrumentals: No words to express those feelings (and those goosebumps in heart and stomach) when every time the starting instruments of this song are played as BGM. Out of the world feelings come through the mind. 6. Beginning titles: I think its Sonu Nigam who sings while the beginning title roll. He sings the word MOHABBAT in a very unique way. It gives you a feel of a tail yet to be told. 7. Orchestra: The use of orchestra (symphony kind of music)has been tremendous. At the scenes where Akbar gets angry, there has been a very dangerous kind of music (hard to explain, sorry). It raises your hair on arms. 8. Khawaja mere khawaja instrumental: Its used at times when someone is depressed or sad. 9. Man mohana instrumental: The tune of the song and some instruments of the song are used very very beautifully at many places.. 10. Many more: I have forgotten many other small pieces, they were all superb. I hardly can stop myself from going again in cinemas to listen to the Divine, Pure, Warm and out of the world Background score of Akbar Jodhaa. Hats off to His Excellency, Sir A R Rahman. Pravinder. [arr] 'Jodha Akbar' is doing very well in other parts of India and overseas.
The film starring Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan has not been released only in Rajasthan state because of the protests by Karni Sena activists against screening of the film. The Rajputs of Rajasthan say there was no love between Emperor Akbar and Jodha Bai and no marriage took place between them. Since the film shows just the opposite, there have been protests against releasing the film in Rajasthan. Even Rajputs based in US are ignoring the film. Apart from this, 'Jodha Akbar' is doing very well in other parts of India and overseas. Recent historical films have fared badly at the box office, but 'Jodha Akbar' could well change that jinx. http://www.cinesouth.com/masala/hotnews/new/16022008-3.shtml ARDENT FAN OF ARR, SHAIK MAHABOOB Looking for last minute shopping deals? [arr] Jodha Akbar - A Musical Treat
Jodha Akbar is a epic wonderfully told by Ashuthosh. The narration, hrithik aishwariya's action, picturization, background score, songs, choreography all excels. Khawaja song is divine, Azeem Oh Shaan shahenshah is a master piece in terms of song aptness, composition, picturization, choreography and screen presence, truly amazing. Ashutosh has best used A R Rahman's background music and songs, which is one of the best to date, to say the least. Overall Jodha akbar is a true delight to watch and nourish in the big screen...
[arr] Jodha Akbar Box Office Report
Jodhaa Akbar Strong On Saturday http://yuvasworld.blogspot.com/2008/02/jodha-akbar-box-office-report-boxoffice.html
[arr] Jodha Akbar - Loads of passion but Where is the content ???
Note: A) Contains Spoilers. B)These are my random thoughts after watching the movie . C)There are many good points about the movie, but i am not going to stress more about those things since many others have already written about it. D) I totally agree that it takes lots of courage and passion for making a epic movie and Ashutosh Gowariker should take a bow for attempting such kind of a movie in India. End of Note. It is clearly evident from the promos and from the fact that this movie was made from the maker of Lagaan and Swades ,that it was made with lots of passion and love for cinema. When the opening credits rolled on the screen, i got goosebumps ,sheer out of the expectations and the hype created around the movie, which was further added with magnificent voice of big B narrating the proceedings. The initial war sequence was very craftily picturised and the cinematography was top notch. The aerial view of the battle field along with the long angle shot was a masterstroke, but as the camera moved closer to the soldiers the make belief factor of the war was lost, the extras looked constrained and lazy. The sequence which could have gone down in the history of Indian cinema was held back. The same thing can be said about the entire movie.I never expected a troy or for that matter lord of the rings, but i surely expected the plot and the sub-plots to be rock firm solid and characters(Apart from Akbar) to be of flesh and blood.Don't take me wrong the movie is ok, but what could have been a masterpiece simply becomes a long and dragging piece of cinema. The saving grace of the movie has to be Hrithik,he sinks his teeth into the character of Akbar and makes him alive on the screen.Aishwarya Rai Bachhan is good in the movie as compared to her other movies.Sonu Sood is strictly ok.All the other actors are wasted. The two songs individually are mindblowing. The Khajwa song is picturised in such a manner that it pulls you like a magnet and you are glued to the screen for the entire track. The title track is A.R Rahman at it's best……beautifully shot and the best song in the album. The main culprit here is the screenplay with half baked plots and half developed characters. The relation between Jodha and her brother is never developed in a manner that you can relate to or feel for.As a result in the end when he dies, you don't get emotional nor do you get numb,in fact you don't feel anything for him.The film drags in parts and some editing could have certainly helped.Just before the intermission, Ila arun creates misunderstanding between HR and Aishwarya and just after the intermission the plot extinguishes like someone has abruptly cut it.The lead villain 's character in the movie played by Nikitin Dheer(ND) is again not developed fully and doesn't have enough screen presence to prove his point. The final one to one combat between HR and ND is inspired heavily from Troy, doesn't matter though but still it remains just fine and again never goes that step ahead. Then again the scene depicting the sword practice of HR ,showing his muscles looks forced and artificial.Though i must say some of the romantic scenes between HR and Aishwarya are treat to watch. I felt sad after watching this movie as i expected a lot from Ashutosh Gowariker and he could have offered so many more things at various levels to this movie. As an ardent fan of Indian movies i still beleive that Ashutosh Gowariker will one day make another classic like Lagaan, but this time he has missed the bus by 3 hrs 20 mins. a blogger review in passionofcinema

[arr] Jodha Akbar - A must watch
http://atoztoa.blogspot.com/2008/02/jodha-akbar-movie-review.html Jodha Akbar directed by Oscar nominated film (Lagaan) director Ashutosh Gowarikar is a historical love story featuring superstar Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Akbar and Jodha. The movie has been in the making for the last 2 and a half years. The first release date was October 12th 2007, but soon postponed to January 25th 2008. Ashutosh suffered from a back problem and again the movie was postponed to a day after Valentines day, February 15th. The movie was also surrounded by a lot of controversy which helped build up the curiosity level. Jodha Akbar is Hrithik Roshan's first release after Dhoom 2 (2006) and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's first release post her marriage to Abhishek Bachchan. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama has just published the first detailed review of the movie and rates it 4 stars on 5. Jodha Akbar Review Let's get one thing straight: You haven't watched anything so opulent, so magnificent like this in a long, long time on the Hindi screen. It's not just body beautiful, but there's soul as well. It requires courage, prowess, patience, aptitude, knowledge, passion and of course, loads of currency to attempt a movie like Jodhaa Akbar. But more than anything else, it requires your firm belief in the subject, the belief to attempt a historical when historicals are considered an absolute no-no in the industry, the belief to spend almost Rs 40 crore in a film that could go either ways. Only when you're convinced yourself can you convince millions of moviegoers. And convinced you are after watching Jodhaa Akbar, a film of epic proportions. Now let's clear a few misconceptions pertaining to the film… It's blasphemous to compare Mughal-E-Azam and Jodhaa Akbar. While Mughal-E-Azam was primarily about the legendary romance between Salim and Anarkali, a subject that has been attempted quite a few times on the Hindi screen before, Jodhaa Akbar is about the relationship that the young Akbar shared with Jodhaa. A lot has been said and written about its length [3.20 hours]. Does the viewer of today have the patience to watch a really lengthy film in today's times? But once into Jodhaa Akbar, the sequence of events, the drama, the romance, the war… every aspect keeps you mesmerized. Oh yes, the length does pinch you at one crucial point [second hour, which is relatively shorter], when a song breaks out. Otherwise, the 3 + hours are very well spent. When you watch historicals like Mughal-E-Azam and Razia Sultan, the usage of chaste Urdu is difficult to comprehend at times. Not here! The language is simplified - Akbar speaks in Urdu, Jodhaa in Hindi - and it's easy to decipher. As a cinematic experience, it would be wrong to compare Jodhaa Akbar to any of Ashutosh Gowariker's previous endeavors. Why, it would be erroneous to compare the film with any film ever made before in this genre. This one stands out and stands out the tallest. To sum up, Jodhaa Akbar leaves you spellbound, enthralled, entranced and awestruck. Ashutosh Gowariker makes the legendary characters come alive on screen. Set in the sixteenth century, Jodhaa Akbar is a love story about a marriage of alliance that gave birth to true love between a great Mughal emperor, Akbar, and a Rajput princess, Jodhaa. Little did Akbar [Hrithik Roshan] know that when he married Jodhaa [Aishwarya Rai Bachchan], he would be embarking upon a new journey — the journey of true love. The daughter of King Bharmal of Amer [Kulbhushan Kharbanda], Jodhaa resented being reduced to a mere political pawn in this marriage of alliance, and Akbar's biggest challenge now did not merely lie in winning battles, but in winning the love of this defiant princess. One of the prime reasons why Jodhaa Akbar works is because the present-day viewer is unaware of the romance between Akbar and Jodhaa. Sure, we all know of Akbar as a great emperor, but the love story makes for a refreshing subject. And the execution of a number of sequences makes Jodhaa Akbar extremely special. Some instances: * The war sequence at the very outset. You realise the scale and magnitude of the film at the very beginning. * Hrithik taming an out-of-control elephant. It's hair-raising. * The two pre-conditions set by Jodhaa, before her marriage to Akbar. Very interesting. * The confrontation between Ila Arun and Ash at the kitchen, when Ash decides to make the meal herself. * The immediate sequence, when Ash is asked to taste the food herself by Ila before she's about to serve the food to the Emperor and his associates. Once done, Hrithik demanding that he be served the meal from the same platter that Jodhaa had used. * The intermission point, which sows the seeds of a misunderstanding between Hrithik and Ash. * Post-interval, Hrithik returning to Amer to get Ash back to Agra and the welcome ceremony by his mother-in-law [Suhasini Mulay]. * The sword fight the very next morning, between Hrithik and Ash. * The

...excellent but nonsensational music ? Hm. I find the critics job is becoming very easy these days. Just add a couple of good words and if you feel that someone is going to call you biased, put in another word which brings all to square one ! Excellent but nonsensational ? What a statement ! It is so easy to make these statements. Untill and unless you really like to listen to all types of music, have listened to different genre / have sung or played musical instruments to a decent level, it is very difficult to understand the pain and hardships the artists / musicians go through to deliver any performance. She too likes Rahman Sir's songs very much and had requested me to get her tamil songs. I had given her a lot of Rahman Sir's and Raja Sir's songs. The wait comes to an end. The music of the most awaited release of the year 'Jodhaa Akbar' directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai is out with splendor and perfection. Director Ashutosh and music director A.R. Rahman have had excellent partnership and produced hit music earlier. Composed by music maestro A.R.Rahman, Jodhaa Akbar's music is magical, spectacular, bracing, pleasant and different from the tunes and beats of the contemporary style of music. The first track Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah starts off with roaring horns and booming drums as we are introduced to our emperor Akbar, his power and stature. With the incredible crisp arrangements of 12 different kinds of percussion instruments in the song, A.R has composed a masterpiece and the effect of the song is just wild. The singers Mohammad Aslam, Bony Chakravarty voice's are just perfect for this score. A.R. Rahman is quiet simply at his best with this song. The heart-warming romantic track Jashn-e-bahaara is enticing, making you hit the repeat button several times. The slow but richly soothing melodious tunes of string variants and tabla just flows smoothly into your ears as if to ease your soul. Javed Ali's tone of voice blends rightly with the tunes creating a most joyous effect on the ear! Pure unadulterated music - a winner! After two beautiful love songs, its time to go spiritual with the Sufi qawwali, 'Khwaja Mere Khwajaa'. Rendered by the maestro A.R. Rahman himself, its an authentic qawwali, the kind heard in the shrines and dargahs. As is well known that Akbar visited the shrine of the famous saint Salim Chisti (Fatehpur Sikri), wept, pleaded and prayed there to be granted a son who would inherit his empire. The qawwali also has an instrumental version, and the instrument predominantly used is the oboe, a woodwind instrument (modified version – bassoon) played to perfection by Leighann Woodard. From praises for the emperor you are taken to the world of two lovers with In Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein. Once again with the soothing tunes of strings interwoven with the beating of drums, the song is dipped in passion and is just breathtaking. Sonu Nigam renders another emotional track with Madhushree providing supporting vocals. The tunes, the voice and the chorus vary in energy with the proceedings and the final outcome is a stunning melody by A.R. This is the best romantic track that proudly tops the charts of JA. The final track Man Mohana sung by Bela Shende is yet another soft track with tunes like that of a bhajan. It's is a situational track that might not be pleasing to all but even in this the blending of various instruments is just mind-blowing. In the context of the movie, the number will serve an important purpose in showing that Jodhaa was a woman of substance and she stuck to her own faith and religion and the emperor respected her faith. So those were our impressions of Jodhaa Akbar, the audio album which finally hit the stores after many postponements, but when it did, the wait was definitely worth it! Rahman has done it again and his fans are savoring his masterly compositions. But isn't that always the case, even when it is served on time? Definitely and surely a must buy, as it may not be a classic, but will surely become one in the days to come. -- regards, Vithur A.R.RAHMAN - MY BREATH LIFE FORCE Get the freedom to save as many mails as you wish. [arr] Jodha Akbar - Untimely effort says Kushal Gopalka
http://www.livemint.com/2008/02/02004912/Untimely-effort.html After hearing and reading director Ashutosh Gowarikar say that the theme of the movie didn't require impressive music tracks, one wasn't expecting too much from this overdue album. And as it happens, low expectations mean the listeners will not be too disappointed by this UTV presentation produced by Gowarikar, with music by A.R. Rahman and lyrics by Javed Akhtar. [image: Jodhaa Akbar: Looking back] Jodhaa Akbar: Looking back In *Jodhaa Akbar, *there are five songs in the genre of praise, devotional and romantic. But one cannot understand why the flavour of the period was not maintained for the music. In the 16th century, the style of music was * raag*-based classical music followed by a slowly evolving *thumri-dadra *culture. If the costumes, jewellery and sets of a film can ape a time period, why can't the music? Are listeners not able to discern and appreciate these subtleties? Simply put: Couldn't the songs have been more Indian? This epic could have done without the predominant Western arrangement, Turkish and Japanese drums, keyboards, et cetera. How about some unadulterated Dhrupad? Or just the form of music that Mian Tansen sang for Akbar? Rahman's sense of aesthetics is good, and his presentation and packaging styles are benchmarking Indian music standards, but this music does not fit a period film. Any song from this film could easily be used in any modern-era film situation. And the songs are too long. The silver lining is the use of several new voices such as Bela Shende, Madhushree, Javed Ali, Mohammed Aslam and Bony Chakravarthy. Having sung for the big boss of Indian cinema music, these singers can surely hope for a bright future. Rahman himself has fabulously sung *Khwaja mere Khwaja*, a peppy hummable qawwali number. Sonu Nigam excels in the pleasant but ordinary creation, *In lamhon ke daaman mein*—never heard him sound as sexy as he does in this love song. Bela Shende does a Lata Mangeshkar in *Mann Mohanaa*. Here is a sweet, thin, high-pitched voice, but the singing is superficial. It's obvious that she is following Madam M's style, but that trademark punch of the prima donna is missing. This is something all female singers of the day need to note and work on. But what is this overdramatic bhajan doing here in the first place? It not only fails to sustain, it just goes on and on! *Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah *and *Jashn-E-Bahaaraa *are easy on the ears and will be accepted by fans of the Chennai music-maker. The slight use of classical *taraana*-type pieces and two miniscule sitar works are some efforts to bring in the flavour of the subject—a stark contrast to an otherwise Western-influenced Rahman submission. But pick up the album, definitely for the fantastic photographs, designing and printing of the CD. [arr] Jodha Akbar rights ( Semi ARR )
http://www.humsurfer.com/view/utv-sells-jodhaa-akbars-rights-to-reliance-adlabs-1 If the reports are to be believed, Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodhaa Akbar has fetched co-producer and presenter, UTV Motion Pictures, a whopping Rs 90 crore for the rights. The magnum opus toplining Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, reportedly cost Rs 50 crore, though Gowariker has gone on record to say that the official budget is Rs 40 crore.Wise option It's a good deal for UTV, says a source. They had chosen to hold their rights for Gowariker's earlier film Swades and rued the decision. Despite winning critical acclaim, the movie had not made much money. That's why they chose to sell the domestic rights of Rang de Basanti to other distributors, retaining only the overseas territory. [arr] Jodha Akbar - An Epic Tale
http://bollywoodmoviesblog.wordpress.com/2008/01/28/jodhaa-akbar-an-epic-tale/ Just lliked this article so that to share it with you all, as it's of one of the blogger have written in AOL India Blogs about the movie Jodhaa Akbar in a very classy way: To borrow the famous words of Mel Brooks,The Legend had it coming. At least it deserved a perspective from one of our best film makers. Another two weeks before the might of the Mughal Empire unleashes on a Cinema screen near you. And for the majority who is apt to get confused at the whole premise of AKBAR the GREAT and this Rajput Princess thingy, better ruffle through those old history textbook pages once again, if you can find them, that is. It shouldn't matter anyways. For the rest who scream from the nearest fort ramparts about how Ashutosh Gowariker is shortchanging history and manipulating facts to his own interests, I say, please give him a break. He has proved to be a great story teller, and a fine craftsman of the Silverscreen and if he wants to tell you a story in his own terms, let him do it. Knowing Ashutosh Gowariker and his portfolio of fine craftsmanship, JODHA-AKBAR wouldn't be disappointing. I am hoping that my wait was worth it. AR Rahman's music that seems to be flowing at you from every second FM station these days doesn't seem to disappoint you. Though as far as Ashutosh's handful of movies are considered, the music played its part in the entire movie and then kept quiet. The stress was on the wholesome movie and not on the item numbers which usually are marketed as by-products of the main movie. For those who came into the history classes late, or have never ever attended it once, arguably(after all, it wouldn't be history if we didn't, get it.) Jodha Bhai was the daughter of King Bharmal who gives away her daughter in marriage to young Jalaluddin, who makes his valiant presence felt in the battlefield, and is soon to be crowned and be known as Akbar the Great. In keeping with the traditions based on the social customs and conditions of those times, marriages were more political alliances than suitablematches, and they kept the entire machinery of the Hindustan's splintered royalty chugging on smoothly. Seen as a prequel to Mughal-e-Azam, everything that has been done to Jodha-Akbar has been done in a grand scale or maybe, in Ashutosh Gowariker's way of translating opulence. I always shiver at the prospect of those period drams that graced our silverscreen in recent times, and the apprehensions are still there, restless, but they have been unceremoniously banished to the back of my mind. The last one that came in during Diwali(not exactly of the epic variety, but the marketing mandarins were adamant!), in an arresting blue afterglow, and spelling out opulence in big, large, cringing NEON from its every set, had me fleeing the Cinema. And that from another acclaimed Director. For Hrithik Roshan, this is an epic roleof a lifetime(though I am wondering what would best describe his role as Gautam Buddha for Shyam Benegal's next project). This also happens to be Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan's first release post wedding, so it gains all the more gravitas as it naturally attains the grand inertia of the the First Family of Bollywood. Mme Rai's last foray into an epic was to say the least scathing. Maybe its just the beginning of epic roles for Hrithik. -- regards, Vithur A.R.RAHMAN - MY BREATH LIFE FORCE
