2007-01-08 Thread Anish Karkare
Hi,

I got this from previous post.

I got this lot when we had problems with Java Heap space being too
small and
too many Apache Web Server daemons running on a Unix box.

Got round this by modifying the catalina.sh file to have a JAVA_OPTS
line with
suitable parameters and by stopping all the Apache daemons and
restarting.

Hope that this may help.

Re: Warning ... SLM 7.0.2 install w/o collector

2007-01-08 Thread Tony Worthington
Chris -

I'm not sure when the 'bundled' thing happened... but I think it was
7.0.2. I wonder if you can install the 7.0.1 collector standalone and
then upgrade it to 7.0.2? Probably not.

Since posting, I have rejected the support solution (restore, reinstall)
and the ticket has been escalated. We'll see where it goes.

And I agree with you on the whole jboss thing. Hopefully that will be
addressed soon, as I could use not having to learn another http/whatever
server. Especially after having dumped SE and IIS to simplify things.

That doesn't make much sense considering how much hell we (I for sure)
raised at UserWorld about them requiring unknown (here) crap,
specifically jboss, installed on your AR server (of all places) ahead of
the SLM collector. BMC Remedy _promised_ at UserWorld an updated
collector that will (a) run on a separate server machine from the AR
Server and (b) run on ServletExec and eventually Tomcat instead of or in
addition to Jboss. I installed SLM 7.01 Patch 003 without the collector
with the expectation that I can install a newer version of the collector
on a separate server with a _known_ JAP server engine when they have it
ready. Now you say the two pieces are only installable together, once!?
That's just wrong.

AND they want us to pay three times as much money for this crap as we
did for SLA!??? That's even MORE WRONG.

Try deleting the entries from the SHARE:Properties form that belong to
SLM.. The installation script might assume that SLM is not loaded and
might allow you to install that collector component.. Take a backup of
the
system before you attempt this.. Also before deleting the necessary
entries from the SHARE:Properties form, export the entries you would
need
to delete to an arx file for backup..

So in building out one of our new servers, I installed SLM 7.0.2 and
didn't include the collector component. This was available as a
standalone install in previous 7.x versions. In contacting support for
assistance:

Currently it is not possible to install the Collector component after
the
initial install of SLM. If the Collector isn't installed at the time
you
install SLM, it's not possible to go back at a later time and install
the
Collector. If you need to have this functionality, then you'd need to
roll back to before installing SLM, and the reinstall SLM, this time
enabling the Collector installation component.

So be warned make sure that you install the collector component
during

the initial setup if you need it.

If it's not one thing it's another *sigh*

P.S. Anyone have a workaround? I'd rather not loose 5 days of work.

Pushing data to the CTM:People form in ITSM 7

Dear listers,

Unlike the SHR:People form in previous ITSM versions, the CTM:People form
in ITSM7 is linked to about a dozen other people-related forms, making the

process of populating this form (and its related forms) quite difficult
and
complex.

We've been able to import our People information into a custom-built form
where it now resides (on ARS7). The next step is to push this data (around

I was just wondering if anyone out there has successfully done this and,

Thanks very much in advance.

Re: Pushing data to the CTM:People form in ITSM 7

2007-01-08 Thread Tim Richardson
Hi Tony,

We've been doing this heavily for a couple of months now. In a nutshell, the
process we've taken is to build a staging form that:

  1) Pushes to the initial forms.
  2) Pulls back the Instance ID and/or People ID and/or Reconciliation ID
  3) Pushes to the supporting form with the appropriate references.

This is needed for Product and Operational Catalogs
  Relationships between any two CIs

In fact, as I'm typing, my other screen is currently relating People to their
Laptops using this strategy.

Bottom line, doing a direct import to the target form has limited use in
version 7.0. You have to turn on logging...do the relate or create then
examine the log to see what's affected.

  Here's an example:
I'm relating people to their Laptops.
My staging form takes the Person's login ID and does a lookup on CTM:People.
I then pull the People ID. I take the Asset ID and do a lookup on
BMC_COMPUTERSYSTEM and get the reconcilation ID.
I then create an entry in AST:AssetPeople with all the IDs and it's done.

Doing CI to CI relationships is basically the same thing. turn on your
logging and create a basic relationship. Go through it and create a staging
form that does the same thing. Then, import into your staging form.

Let me know if you get stuck with something. I'm willing to send you my
staging forms and related filters...but you could probably build your own about
as quick as it would take you to figure mine out.

  Tim

Re: Using DSO to swap dockets between ARS ITSM 5 ITSM 7

2007-01-08 Thread Axton

The only problem I would raise with this approach follows.

- The data structures are very different between the two releases
- The business rules that are enforced against requests are very different
between the two releases
- In order to DSO data between the two releases, you are going to have to
account for every discrepency between the above two items

My prediction is that this will lead to a maintenence nightmare in the short
term, taking away from time that would be better spent performing the
upgrade.

To put into the context of a scenario:
You set up both servers; you set up the DSO between the two server; you
fight a never ending battle of problems with the DSO feed between the two
servers; you burn all your time firefighting instead of doing an upgrade.

I'm not saying it's impossible to take this approach, but I see far too many
possiblities for problems and would therefore discourage it.

Just because your computer clock is correct is no guarantee
that times
in Remedy will be right. Remember that ARS stores times as
seconds since
Midnight, 1/1/1970 GMT. Every time it displays a time, it
calculates the
difference between what's stored and the time zone it's
displaying in,
so if ARS doesn't know it's DST, every time between the old
and new
Daylight start times will be off by an hour.

Hi everyone,

I understand from past discussions (see Daylight savings time
again) that there may or may not be problem with Remedy and
daylight
savings time, but patches are on the way.

Every morning we shut down our Remedy system in order to back
up the
database. Then we restart the system. My guess/hope is that
when we
restart the system, Remedy will set its clock by the computer
clock, and
as long as the computer clock is right, Remedy should be too.
 That
means we are immune to daylight savings time problems.

Am I right?

Re: AR System version numbers

2007-01-08 Thread Rick Cook
And, in addition to that, a more infrequent use of one-off exceptions to
the intent of the numbering system. For instance, wasn't one of the 7.0.2
installs the same as the 7.0.1, only with a better installer? That seems a
bit misleading, since no functionality was added. Same thing happened with
one of the CMDB patches, I think.

Just my opinion, but in those instances, it would be good to do what I
suggested Support do years ago - track who's downloaded what, and if a
problem with the installer or some non-application portion of it occurs,
proactively contact the customers about replacing the obsolete server/patch
- with one using the same version #. If that won't work, at least pull the
bad server version from the drop-downs on the download site.

patches... i.e., if you have installed ITSM application x 7.02 then is that
equal to application x 7.01 Patch 003 ??? It appears that the incremental
application releases are only useful for new installs, especially since you
are tied to patch installs _only_ once you have invested any time whatsoever
in configuring the application(s). Since there is no way to snapshot your
configuration data and restore it to a newer application version
installation, the only thing you can do after configuring is patch. We will
need a clear understanding of what application version level we are up to
after each patch, since there seems to be a disconnect between current
application releases and patch releases.

Subject: AR System version numbers

**
Hi All,

I've noticed a distinct difference in the way some folks on the list refer
to the version number of AR System versus the way BMC refers to the
versions. I thought it best to quickly post how BMC refers to versioning
around AR System to avoid confusion.

Format: VV.RR.MMM Patch PPP

V=Version
R=Release
M=Maintenance Release
P=Patch

An example would be 3.2.02 Patch 003. Typically, if the digit for V, R or M
is less than 10, the first '0' (zero) is not used (in other words, you would
not see 03.02.002).

Thus, the current release of AR System is 7.0.01. When the first patch for
AR System 7.0.01 becomes generally available, it will be known as AR System
7.0.01 Patch 001.

Hope this helps folks better understand responses that include version or
patch information.

Thanks,

Re: Daylight savings time and Remedy system restarts

2007-01-08 Thread David Seidman

Hello,

We are still running 5.1.2 with a scheduled upgrade to 7.0.1 by May, where
completing the upgrade by March 11 is not an option. Upgrading to 6 as an
interim step is not a preferable option (albeit the only one officially
sanctioned by BMC).

For sure, without corrective action, date/time values falling between
3/11/07 2AM and 4/3/07 2AM stored in the database prior to 3/11/07 2AM will
be incorrect. We can identify these and modify them.

Assuming the system clock correctly adapts to the new DST, Remedy's date
calculations after DST takes effect should be accurate, right?

...or...will there be a problem with future date values after 4/3/07 2AM,
since that is when that ARS library thinks DST is taking effect?

More specifically, since we have SLA's that use business time, are we in for
a heap of trouble if we stay with 5.1.2 through 3/11 and past 4/3?

Thanks,
Dave

Just because your computer clock is correct is no guarantee that times

difference between what's stored and the time zone it's displaying in,
so if ARS doesn't know it's DST, every time between the old and new
Daylight start times will be off by an hour.

Re: AR System version numbers

2007-01-08 Thread strauss
What we need to know is if we are at the exact same patch level if we
apply Patch 003 for any of the original distributions. The Supportweb
currently lists a Patch 003 for Change Management 7.00.00, 7.0.01, and
7.0.02. If the Patch 003 variants all take us to exactly the same
application build when applied to the appropriate distribution of the
installer (7.0.00, 7.0.01, or 7.0.02), then we should be able to keep
the application current no matter where we started. In other words:

Change Management 7.00.00 Patch 003 = Change Management 7.0.01 Patch 003
= Change Management 7.0.02 Patch 003

And, in addition to that, a more infrequent use of one-off exceptions
to the intent of the numbering system. For instance, wasn't one of the
7.0.2 installs the same as the 7.0.1, only with a better installer?
That seems a bit misleading, since no functionality was added. Same
thing happened with one of the CMDB patches, I think.

Just my opinion, but in those instances, it would be good to do what I
suggested Support do years ago - track who's downloaded what, and if a
problem with the installer or some non-application portion of it occurs,
proactively contact the customers about replacing the obsolete
server/patch - with one using the same version #. If that won't work,
at least pull the bad server version from the drop-downs on the download
site.

Midtier Printing Problem

2007-01-08 Thread Ben Cantatore
I'm able to print just fine in the user tool, however whenever I try to
print from midtier I get page not found.

Current configuration: Linux servers (DB, App and Web) version SUSE 9
O/S. I'm not sure what the actual hardware is, but definitely beefy
servers with lots of ram/HD. Connect to an Oracle 10g database. Business
Objects server is on a Windows 2003 server and BO is version 11. Midtier
is on Apache Tomcat 5.5.20. Runing Arserver version 7.0.2 fully patched
and ITSM version 7.0 fully patched.

I believe my problem is because midtier is not installed on the same
server as crystal reports. At my last job, I had a Windows Server for
both the midtier and the crystal server. Based on some excellent help
from Barbara Villama from BMC, I was able to get midtier to print crystal
reports from within Remedy. The solution used however works only on 2
Winx servers. Since I'm on Linux for Midtier and Windows for BO, I'm not
sure how to translate her solution to the different platform. I'm not
familiar with Apache Tomcat.

If someone has a similar configuration and can tell me what I need to do
to setup Midtier for printing, I'd really appreciate it.

All,

else out there too.

If you know the KB-ID and you only want to find that one record then
only search on the number portion of the KB-ID value.

So if you want to see KM-10005381 then only enter 10005381
in the Keyword(s): field before you do your search.

If you enter KM-10005381 then you will get 1000's or records.
If you enter 10005381 then you get zero records.

All of those results seem counter intuitive to me, but here are my
observations of the current functionality.

this be coming from the Change ID (1) despite my duplicate preferences?

Its probably not the change form that you are getting this error on then..
There must be some other form that this import is causing a modify or submit to
that is causing a violation of an index.

Can you take a filger log and take a look at the all the Push-Field actions
that are triggered as a result of this import. That might give you some clue.
An SQL log coupled with the filter log would be even more useful.

Here are the SQL errors if anyone cares :)

*/*** ERROR *** Attempt to insert duplicate key row in object 'T890'

*/*** ERROR *** Attempt to insert duplicate key row in object

BTW, it appears tha the second object is the blob for the one attachment

Which patch level of ARImport are you using and did you export to an
.arx or .csv file?

I remember problems trying to do an update from a .csv in earlier
versions of arimport.

Listers,

ARS 6.03
Solaris OS
Sybase 12.5.1 DB

ITSM 5.5 heavily customized.

I'm trying to import data into an existing change record, mapping the
change id and the data field. I'm basically attempting a data transfer
from one field to another. Export Change ID and current data, import
change ID and data to new field. I have my duplicate preferences set to
Update Old Record with New Records Data. I STILL get a unique index
error (ARERR 382). There are no user defined unique indexes on our
Change form. My filter logs don't show a push to another form. Could
this be coming from the Change ID (1) despite my duplicate preferences?

TIA,

Re: DB and ARS Upgrade with dbVersion error

2007-01-08 Thread Gary Dries

Again thanks for the help,

*The problem:*
We found in the /tmp/arDBError.log the error
*The value(s) for this entry violate a unique index that has been defined
for this form (ARERR 382)
  User logins must be unique*
This lead us to look at the user_cache table and the user_cache table showed
multiple entries in the USERNAME field that are not unique.
*The Solution:*
We removed the duplicates from the table and ran the install and it
completed with out any errors.

This solved the installation problem but now we have ran into a nother issue
when the ARS Server daemon tries to start, I will open a new thread on that
if we can not resolve.

yes we did confgure the 10g enviroment vars prior to the upgrade, as
 stated in the install manual.

We have been going through the sql log and did find where it updated the
control table changing the dbversion several times up to 21, but it does not
post any errors after that, it reads that it ended normally after creating
updating and dropping a support_file and user_cachey22 table.

we will look for the core files and post if we find anything unusual.

 Thanks again,

any other input from anyone is always helpful.

Did you configure the 10g environment variables prior to running the
  upgrade installer?

Look for any core files in either the install media dir, ar install
  dir, or tmp dirs.

In the arsql.log, it should be evident that the upgrade installer
stages the upgrade, moving from 5.1 (not sure schema version), to 20,
to 21, and finally to 22. Something between these hosed up. The logs
  should tell you what.

Please consider posting the solution you find on arswiki:

Re: Remedy Support login....

2007-01-08 Thread Joe DeSouza
Well believe me or not they say they cannot locate my old account.. I was
registered with Remedy support years ago using my old email address when I
worked with a previous employer, and then after moving to my current employment
had my email address on that account changed to my current email address and
over a phone call since I could not for some reason remove the old support
contract ID's had Remedy support remove that for me, and make my current ID's I
use as my default..

All went well for a while till they decided to make that change.. and now I
cant get in using either my old email address nor my new one.. The funny thing
though is when I hit the link 'Forgot password', it does take me to the
'questionaire' page that helps retreive the password, which off course is of no
use to me as I do not have access to that old email address now.. but the fact
that it takes me to those questions shows that the old account still exists in
their system with that old email address tied to it... Yet their support are
unable to retreive that for me...

If I try logging in with any of my updated email addresses, their system does
not recognize any of those email addresses...

So this morning I saw one of their support mails asking me to reregister, as
they cant seem to retreive my old account which I can bet for the above reasons
is still resident in their system..

Go figure...

Thank God for the ARS List - at least we have one consistent source of support
for us to bank on..

Joe

Passing field ID from a table field as a parameter into RunIf qualification

2007-01-08 Thread Dunstan Christopher
Has anybody used column that contains fieldIDs of certain fields in a table as
a parameter into a run if qualification that qualify for the data value of that
field i.e $fieldID$ in an RUNIF qualification for a table loop.
  ie.
   NOT $$col_SFGCHGLOEFieldID$$LIKE 0 OR $$col_SFGCHGLOEFieldID$$ !=
$NULL$
what I am trying to resolve this to $80159$ LIKE 0 OR $80160$ !=
$NULL$.

I think this will help create code in dynamic way.

Re: Passing field ID from a table field as a parameter into RunIf qualification

2007-01-08 Thread Joe DeSouza
I have used dynamic column ID's in a workflow where I have created a
configurable audit functionality on fields that could be picked at a
configuration table, and stored there.. So when a filter guide runs, it
dynamically creates a Run If qualification for a filter that is used in a
Filter Guide to compare the DB and TR value of those fields that are selected
on the field audit configuration table...

So instead of a table loop I use a Filter guide that loops using the Entry ID
of that configuration table by starting with the lowest ID and looking for the
next ID that is greater than the current one on the next run of that guide in
the loop..

Works pretty good...

Re: FYI: BMC Knowledge base searching tip....

2007-01-08 Thread vital3d
I've worked with this knowledge base for about 2-3 years now, when it
was still called KMR. It utilizes Hummingbird SearchServer, while it's
great for text/natural language queries, it's more difficult to find
data regarding what you are exactly looking for here.

The reason you get more records for KM-... it is looking through the
entire document contents NOT the actual Document ID you are trying to
find. So if the document ID KM-10005381 is mentioned in any
content it will increase that document's ranking. What's more, is that
it will approximations, it will look for the substring KM- in the
content making the result sets even larger.

0 (zero) and the word other is a wildcard. *shrug*

Perhaps, a RFE should be submitted to request that a field be provided
that you can search by specific Document ID. I know this is in the now
defuct KMR, I can't speak for RKM.

Joe,
When I contacted BMC about my old login they told me to use the email address
that was associated with my account as the login id, with the password for my
old account. Once I tried this I was able to get back into support. I
seriously don't like the direction that BMC is taking with support but some of
the old guys are still around and still very helpful.

Good Luck,
Dave

Does anyone on here know what happened to the old user logins?

I used to have an account and it suddenly seems to have disappeared. I am at
the moment corresponding to Customer support via email and dont seem to be
getting too far as they seem to not be able to retrieve my account information..

Has anyone else faced this problem before?

I could create a new account as they are suggesting but that would mean I will
not have access to any of my historical tickets, enhancement requests, etc that
I had submitted.. That would suck...

ITSM 7 - Installation Oddity

2007-01-08 Thread Eli Schilling
Hi Listers!

So I loaded ARS 7.01, approval server, assignment engine and CMDB 2.0x.
So far so good right? Well, I installed Incident management; the
folders were created but the forms don't show up in AR Admin, nor can I
access any of the functionality via the user tool. So I removed the
folder, registry keys, etc and did a reinstall. Again, it appeared to
function just fine but again, no components were accessible...

I have since installed Problem and Change management without any issues.

I reviewed the incident management installation logs and everything
looks fine...there are no errors; installation completed successfully.

Can somebody tell me what I missed? Why doesn't Incident management
work and how can I fix it?

Thanks in advance!

Re: FYI: BMC Knowledge base searching tip....

2007-01-08 Thread vital3d
Rick,

The simple answer is if the string KM- shows up more the document
population it is going to rank that resultset higher than a unique
string regardless of the search query. There is a way around this
however, just as Matt suggested using the Document ID sans the KM-.

Again, the proper route would be to provide a new field for searching
on Document ID only, not this backwards way. Good luck, as I don't see
that happening soon. :(

I am just providing information from my own experience with the
technology that is being used here.

Thanks for the reply!

Re: FYI: BMC Knowledge base searching tip....

2007-01-08 Thread Carey Matthew Black

I am disappointed that the prefix (that would appear on every
record) is not in the exclude list. (Assuming there is such a thing.
Like the old FTS had. And I am fairly sure it exists in the new FTS
too.)

I am also disappointed that the total string match does not weigh
higher than a partial string match. (Why should multiple partial
matches of 81 or 381 or KM- be considered a better match than
a single match of the whole supplied search value KM-10005381?
Just because the is a popular word in the data does not make it a
good candidate to match on. The existing rules just do not compute for
me.)

I am also disappointed that there is no obvious way to look up a
specific entry when you know the primary key. The addition of a
separate KB-ID field does not sound like it should be that hard to
do. (That single field and a simple active link, or maybe three,
should avoid the whole FTS feature all together.)

I guess I was just belly aching about some features that just seems so
obvious to me. I still hope the searching tip might be of some help to
some of you out there. (The tip will likely also serve as a
workaround that will also prevent BMC from taking 10 minutes to make
such a simple change to solve our root problem too. But maybe that is
just my current foul mood speaking.)

But as I sit here, preparing for a late night production deployment,
after watching the OSU Buckeyes lose a National Championship I
just think there are more important things than FTS right now.

Go Bucks.

Congratulations Gators. You earned it this year.

Re: Passing field ID from a table field as a parameter into RunIf qualification

2007-01-08 Thread Carey Matthew Black

Dunstan,

What I think Joe is trying to say is...

You want to use the EXTERNAL() operator in that Run if. However you
need to first set a Character field with a value of the full
qualification you want to test.

So add a display only (z-Temp) field that you set with the string:

NOT (+$col_SFGCHGLOEFieldID$+)LIKE 0 OR
+$col_SFGCHGLOEFieldID$+ != $\NULL$

Then have the Run If set like...

EXTERNAL($z-Temp$) AND $z-Temp$ != $NULL$

And that should get the job done.

Just keep in mind the following:
(Which you can find in the Admin tool Help menu.Search the INDEX for
EXTERNAL or Operators

***
EXTERNAL() evaluates to True when:
The field specified contains an expression that evaluates to True.
  The field is empty.
The field does not exist or is not a character field.

If you use keywords as part of a qualification in a field called by
EXTERNAL(), you must add an escape character (\) to the keywords. This
prevents the keywords from expanding prior to being used in the
qualification.
For example, if you have a table field with a qualification of
EXTERNAL($Qualify Field$)
and Qualify Field is a character field with a value of
('Create Date' $TIMESTAMP$) AND ('Login Name' = $USER$)
the table field will not produce expected results when refreshed. The
keywords will expand, producing a qualification such as
('Create Date' 05/22/02 11:00:34 AM) AND ('Login Name' = Demo)
This is not a valid query, since the date/time and character values
are not enclosed in quotation marks. To prevent the keywords from
expanding, write the qualification like this:
('Create Date' $\TIMESTAMP$) AND ('Login Name' = $\USER$)
In forms viewed on the Web, if EXTERNAL() references a field that
contains a qualification such as $Date 1$ = 'Date 2', you must add
double quotation marks around $Date 1$, like this:
$Date 1$ = 'Date 2'.
***

Based on what you postedmy guess is that this is what is happening
for your existing workflow: (If the admin tool will even let you save
the Run If value at all.)

the value of:

$$col_SFGCHGLOEFieldID$$

would be a litteral value of $$col_SFGCHGLOEFieldID$$ (no eval
would be done on the string, and the value in the column would not be
used.)

HTH.

I have used dynamic column ID's in a workflow where I have created a

configuration table, and stored there.. So when a filter guide runs, it
dynamically creates a Run If qualification for a filter that is used in a
Filter Guide to compare the DB and TR value of those fields that are
selected on the field audit configuration table...

So instead of a table loop I use a Filter guide that loops using the Entry
ID of that configuration table by starting with the lowest ID and looking
for the next ID that is greater than the current one on the next run of that
guide in the loop..

Works pretty good...

Has anybody used column that contains fieldIDs of certain fields in a table
as a parameter into a run if qualification that qualify for the data value
of that field i.e $fieldID$ in an RUNIF qualification for a table loop.
ie.
 NOT $$col_SFGCHGLOEFieldID$$LIKE 0 OR
$$col_SFGCHGLOEFieldID$$ != $NULL$
what I am trying to resolve this to $80159$ LIKE 0 OR $80160$ !=
$NULL$.

I think this will help create code in dynamic way.
