Re: How to upgrade AR system ITSM apps from 6.x to 7.x

2008-04-10 Thread Rajagopal, Ramya
Hi Rick,

Thanks for the heads-up J

I understood as to how we'll do the workflow migration. I'm curious to know,

§ For these kind of activities, do we use Migrator tool or you have any
suggestions to this?

§ Say in scenarios, we have to move the data to the latest version, then do we
have some tool to accomplish the bulk data load?

Best Regards,

Ramya

** I'll make this short and simple. You do not upgrade. The differences
between v6 and v7 of the applications are as night and day. To migrate from v6
to v7, you need to install v7 fresh on a new server, and then figure out
whether you want to migrate your existing customizations and code over.

Once you get to that point, there are many here with the experience to help you
over the bumps.

arserverd 'hangs' (AR 7.0.1 patch 5 - Sol 10 - Ora 10g2)

2008-04-10 Thread George Jungle
Hey guys,

We're getting a strange issue (seemingly intermittent) with the arserverd
where it just seems to 'hang'.

All existing and new clients receive a TimeOut error, but yet when you
check :
 -the processes at the o/s
-the error logs
-db sessions

there is no evidence that there is an issue. (i.e. all processes running,
you get timeouts appearing due to Brie / SLM engine not being able to
connect and db sessions are not 'locked' or taking an extensive amount of
time to process).

It seems that the only way to fix this is to do a restart of the AR Server.

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything remotely
similar to this?

Thanks.

Look at the Dataload Ùtility which is released as Patch 9003 for ITSM 7.
And yes, you can use it in a production environment.
If you want you can use AIE or EIE to populate the data load forms instead
of the batch file and the MS Excel sheets.

Replacing test data with live

Re: Configuring Multiple AR Email Engine

2008-04-10 Thread Michiel Beijen
Hi Amey,

Below is a snippet I have regarding Email Engine performance tuning. It is
not possible to set up multiple email engines connected to one single AR
Server but you can run the email engine on another host that the AR Server.
Also there are several options for tuning the email engine. The amount of
email you specify should not pose problems.

Regards,

Michiel Beijen.

-

There are several things you can do to speed up emails. We have tuned ours
so that it can send between 300-500 per minute. We reach those levels
several times a day. We can get 1000 per minute if server load is low and
the emails do not contain ARTask attachments. Here are a few things you can
do:

   - Use multiple private threads

   1. Setup a private RPC queue. Set max threads to the total number of
incoming and outgoing mailboxes you have.
   2. Specify this RPC number in emaildaemon.properties like this:

com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.yourserver.RPC=390630

   - Configure multiple outgoing mailboxes

   1. If you have access to multiple SMTP servers, create one mailbox for
each SMTP server. You won't see much gain from using a single SMTP server
and aliasing it to allow creation of multiple Remedy mailboxes. A
one-for-one on mail servers to mailboxes seems to be a functional limit. But
if you have 2 SMTP servers with 2 mailboxes you can double your throughput.
   2. If you have an Exchange server, create one for an Outlook profile.
(Consider creating multiple Outlook profiles and MAPI mailboxes if you
really need more throughput). MAPI tends to be much faster than SMTP but is
prone to issues with Exchange connectivity, the Outlook profile, etc.
   3. Setup workflow on AR System Email Messages using Set Fields to
specify the outgoing mailbox so that it uses a round robin approach.

   - Increase number of threads per mailbox (7.0.x only)

   1. This is a 7.0.x feature I haven't been able to use since I'm on
6.3. But Support has achieved some outrageous improvements with these
settings in their test lab. If you're on 7.0.x, add these to your
emaildaemon.properties file. (Note: increasing these settings to higher
numbers won't yield higher throughput for some reason)

com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.NumberOfSenderThreads=4
com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.OutgoingMessagesQueueSize=2000

   - Dedicated Email Engine server

   1. Setup a separate server that does nothing but run the Email Engine
service. Search the BMC KB for instructions on changing the registry so that
the Email Engine service is not dependent on the local AR Server service.
This will allow you to run the Email Engine without running AR Server.
Configure the emaildaemon.properties to connect to your actual AR Server.
This will really help if your AR Server gets high CPU usage.

   - Increase the Java heap size

   1. Search for this in the BMC KB. Increase the max heap size to 512 MB
or 1 GB and you could see a big improvement if Java is using a lot of
   memory.

   - Turn off group and user caching

   1. Set this line in emaildaemon.properties so the Email Engine won't
cache all of your groups and users when it starts up. It will only cache
them as needed. It rarely actually needs that info and it uses a lot of
memory. This will also make the Email Engine service start much faster.

com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.FetchUserGroupInfoOnDemand=true

   - Add additional indexes

   1. With SQL analysis we found some email engine queries that could
benefit from more indexes when you have quite a bit of history on your email
engine forms. Back on 5.1.1 these (and a few others BMC finally added as
standard) doubled my outgoing throughput. These include:

AR System Email Association
  1. Destination ID (improves performance)
AR System Email Error Logs
  1. Email ID (makes display of AR System Email Messages records faster)
  2. Create Date (makes troubleshooting easier)
AR System Email Messages

We try to keep them in sync, but don’t always succeed. Our dba is

Are there any pitfalls that we should be aware of?

The AIE requires a license under the license rules from BMC

The AIE license is granted to people who have a CMDB license. If you're using
any of the OOB applications you need to install/license the CMDB and you own a
license for both already - consequently you are good to go.

Re: arserverd 'hangs' (AR 7.0.1 patch 5 - Sol 10 - Ora 10g2)

2008-04-10 Thread Roger Medsker
George,

I have seen this behavior in a situation we had where AR System was
actually restarting. There is no indication in any of the logs that the
server crashed or was manually stopped. You can detect this by having server
side SQL logging on when this occurs. If you see lots of SQL transactions
with no identified user associated to them, then the server process is
starting up. This doesn't help identify the root cause but the question
changes from Why does the server 'hang'? to Why is the server
restarting?

Thanks.

George

Strange that it would alter to both exact and force when having the system set
to force in one operation. Are you seeing the alter sessions right next to
each other or are there various inserts in between? Exact is used when
inserting into long raw.

Have you verified that both of your awr reports are reporting the same values
in the init.ora section? I know you mention you've checked a gazillion times
... but it might be in the spfile and not be recognized by the db. We've also
had cursor sharing changes not stick over db restarts.

init.ora Parameters
Parameter NameBegin value End value
   (if different)
- - --
cursor_sharingFORCE

Inserts into a Long Raw column while cursor_sharing is
enabled can cause the BMC Remedy Action Request System® (AR System®) server
thread to hang. Such inserts are commonly done as part of the Email Engine
activity when attachments are included in email messages.

To avoid any impact from this issue, AR System server code explicitly disables
cursor_sharing (that is, sets it to exact) when doing such an insert into a
Long Raw
column. However, it first needs to know that the current setting is not
already
exact.

To get the current setting, the AR System server looks in the ar.conf file,
where the cursor_sharing setting must be set to reflect the init.ora settings
from
Oracle. If the ar.conf file does not reflect the init.ora settings, then the AR
System
server assumes the value is already exact and, therefore, will not reset it
when
doing inserts into Long Raw columns.

Database cursor sharing

We have two systems - both on Solaris logical servers, both on the same
box. Both have remote Oracle databases. (7.1 001 for Solaris w/Oracle,
IM 7.03)

Dev = faster response time (saving an Incident takes 9 seconds)
QA = very slow response time (saving an Incident takes 65 seconds).

These two systems are - as far as we know - identical. However, when
debugging the system we have found that the fast (dev) system is
executing the following oracle server side parameters during a save:

ALTER SESSION set CURSOR_SHARING = EXACT
ALTER SESSION set CURSOR_SHARING = FORCE

This is NOT happening on the QA server.

Both servers have the Oracle-Cursor-Sharing: FORCE parameter set in
the ar.conf file and the corresponding appropriate setting is
established in Oracle (and we've checked these like 9000 times).

Anyone know what setting/config would make Remedy do this to Oracle?

Re: Open Ticket from AL

2008-04-10 Thread Carey Matthew Black
Andy,

I really wish there was a way to tell what version of the ARS
object(s) the User tool/Mid-Tier is using. ( Like even showing the
Last Modified Date for the form would be helpful.) I suspect that
the reason your first test failed is that the client did not in fact
have the most recent version and was instead using a local cached copy
of the object that was a previous version of the active link.

I hate to say it, but there are times that I really wish, for
development purposes, that I could tell the ARS client (User Tool , or
Mid-Tier) that it should always to get the objects a fresh and NOT use
any local cache. When testing/developing caches are often a blind
spot.

George,

I have seen this behavior in a situation we had where AR System was actually
restarting. There is no indication in any of the logs that the server crashed
or was manually stopped. You can detect this by having server side SQL logging
on when this occurs. If you see lots of SQL transactions with no identified
user associated to them, then the server process is starting up. This doesn't
help identify the root cause but the question changes from Why does the server
'hang'? to Why is the server restarting?

Hey guys,

We're getting a strange issue (seemingly intermittent) with the arserverd where
it just seems to 'hang'.

All existing and new clients receive a TimeOut error, but yet when you check :

-the processes at the o/s

-the error logs

-db sessions

there is no evidence that there is an issue. (i.e. all processes running, you
get timeouts appearing due to Brie / SLM engine not being able to connect and
db sessions are not 'locked' or taking an extensive amount of time to process).

It seems that the only way to fix this is to do a restart of the AR Server.

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything remotely similar
to this?

Thanks.

George

Form sql view not found, again

2008-04-10 Thread Dwayne Martin
Dear List,

I am suffering a recurrence of a problem I sent in back in February. I have a
form with no sql view. If I change the db name of a field I get “Creation of
one of the SQL views for the form failed within the SQL database. Operation
completed successfully, but the SQL view is not in place. (ARWARN 69).”

The last time the problem turned out to be “ISLONG” character fields, but I ran
the same selection statement and found no such fields. In fact, there are no
fields 255 chars in the form.

If I run an sql log I see:

If I run this statement in TOAD I get “ORA-00933: SQL command not properly

The form name is “LA:SILab”. I checked for fields with names the same as
Oracle keywords.

I have no problem updating other forms.

So if all you good people who came to my aid last time would like to try again
I will be very glad for your help.

That's always bugged me, as has the following:

Canceled vs. Cancelled
Requestor vs. Requester
Implementor vs. Implementer (I see that Implementor isn't a word, but, then,
why is Requestor? To me, the -or sounds correct).

I favor the Cancelled myself, and I'm not British. I've always favored Favour,

Re: Replacing test data with live

2008-04-10 Thread Pierson, Shawn
That isn't complete enough for ITSM 7.0 though. There are some tables
(I don't have a complete list off the top of my head) that contain
server references too. For example, one is the CAI Application Registry
form which has the server name for each app installed. What I've done
is develop a script to do a search and replace across my entire
database, excluding tables like HPD_Help_Desk, CHG_Infrastructure_Change
and BMC_Core_BaseElement so I don't mess up any real data.

DSL Import

2008-04-10 Thread Brian Gillock
Listers,

When we did our application installs we didn't want, and
didn't think we'd need the DSL. But now we've changed our minds and would
like to install it. According to the ITSM install guide, if you uncheck it
during the app installs, it still installs the workflow, just not the data.
With that in mind, if we follow the steps in the ITSM Config guide for
importing vendor data, will that give us what we need? If not, is there a
way to install the DSL without reinstalling one of the apps?

ARS 7.1

ITSM 7.0.3

SQL Server 2005

Thanks!

Brian

Re: Form sql view not found, again SOLVED AGAIN

2008-04-10 Thread Dwayne Martin
Once again, Doug Mueller came thru with the answer. It was a variation on the
previous problem, only this time it was a Diary field instead of a Character.

When I did:
select fieldId, isLong from field_diary where schemaId = 426

I got: FIELDID: 536870919, ISLONG: 1.

Fortunately, we no longer use this field and so we can delete it. I asked Doug
what somebody should do if they still needed the field and he said he didn't
know, but support would.

Thanks, Doug!

Dear List,

I am suffering a recurrence of a problem I sent in back in February. I have a

Re: How can I have ARS Remedy 6.3 Demo?

2008-04-10 Thread Easter, David
You can request a 6.3 trial license through the website. However, since
6.3 is nearing the end of its support lifecycle, I would recommend that
you evaluate AR System 7.1.00 instead - especially if you're evaluating
this for future projects.

You will need a Support ID to download the software and obtain a
license. You can contact your local BMC sales representative to get a
temporary Support ID if you do not already have one.

Also note that AR System will operate without a license key - but you
will be limited to 3 fixed users and 2000 records per form.

You can download the software and get temp licenses from the support web
site. The request for temp licenses may only be good for 7.x though.

My question exactly...

I have seen this on RH Linux with ARS 6.3 (earlier patches, say p3-11 or
so).

We were doing LDAP searches against AD. I found that it help using the
global catalog. Just put the port number (3268) in your Vendor Form table
name field. Unfortunately the CG did not return all of the attributes we
were looking for.

Here is a link for info on the AD Global Catalog.

Generate a core file and see what the stack is when it crashes or
attach a debugger to the arplugin process and catch the signal (11,
I'm assuming). Do you have the source for the plugin? If you have
the source, you will actually be able to fix the problem.

man dbx

read on the following dbx commands:
check -leaks
check -memuse
check -access

That's always bugged me, as has the following:

Canceled vs. Cancelled
Requestor vs. Requester
Implementor vs. Implementer (I see that Implementor isn't a word, but,
then, why is Requestor? To me, the -or sounds correct).

I favor the Cancelled myself, and I'm not British. I've always favored
Favour, Colour, Armour also, but maybe I'm just different...

Re: DSL Import

2008-04-10 Thread strauss
You can run any of the DSL DATA patches (don't even THINK of running any
of the DSL application patches) and they will load the latest data set
into your staging forms. Then you can import the data one set at a time
from the DSL import console (PDL:ESIDImportConsole). The DSL DATA Patch
005 contains the latest data - version 110.7.0.1. This is the exact
same process as an upgrade of the data set - I updated the data in my
staging forms before ever importing it into the live application.

**

Listers,

When we did our application installs we didn't
want, and didn't think we'd need the DSL. But now we've changed our
minds and would like to install it. According to the ITSM install
guide, if you uncheck it during the app installs, it still installs the
workflow, just not the data. With that in mind, if we follow the steps
in the ITSM Config guide for importing vendor data, will that give us
what we need? If not, is there a way to install the DSL without
reinstalling one of the apps?

Thanks!

RESOLVED: Mid-Tier help

2008-04-10 Thread Gary Opela (Corporate)
Update:

I got it working by doing the following:

Uninstall MT, Uninstall Tomcat.

Download tomcat 5.5. from apache.org.

Install tomcat 5.5 manually

Install mid-tier (without tomcat)

Reboot

Works like a charm. Something about remedy installing tomcat wasn't
working.

Thanks so much to all who helped!

Re: ARDBC Plugin crashes AR Plugin service

2008-04-10 Thread Arthur Johnson
From the plugin logs I was able to pinpoint the error. I am using libxml2 to
parse the xml to send to the external service and also to parse the response
from the external service and expose as rows in ARS.

I have attached the code which is in question. When the second search is
done the logs show - After len - 769 and after that the crash occurs since
I don't see After doc. So the line 44 in the attached file is where the
problem is.

Best bet is to hook a debugger up to it. The checks dbx provides will
tell you what the program is doing that it shouldn't be doing.

Application-Delete-Entry on the Alert List

2008-04-10 Thread TL
Hi all,

I am using Remedy Alert for user notifications and I'm opening the
Alert List on the web. I have added a delete button on the Alert List
form so my users can delete entries as they deem necessary. The
workflow I'm using is an Active Link that executes on this button and
my If Action has the following Run Process action

@@:Application-Delete-Entry Alert Events $Request ID$.

This doesn't work because the Request ID field is always null.

What I'm finding is that the Alert List form has a table with field ID
706. This Remedy table lists some some of the fields from the Alert
Events form and these values are available. It does not however list
the Request ID field. If I try to use it, it's null. The easiest thing
would be to add the Request ID field to the table but there doesn't
seem to be a way to add it. Does nayone have any ideas?

Date fields are not stored in seconds (You are thinking of DateTime or
Time fields). Date fields are stored as the number of days since
January 1, 4713 B.C.

Hey everyone,

I added a date field to a form and when we are trying to get the value
out in SQL we're not getting what we expect. If I just do a select of
the field, I get a 7 digit number (2454436). If I try and run the same
conversion against it that is run against the date/time fields:

convert (varchar(10),dateadd(second, Invoicemonth, '1 January 1970'),
101) 'Invoice Month 1'

we get 1/28/1970. I'm no SQL expert- how can I get the value of that
field in a MM/DD/ format?

Thanks!

Chris

Re: date field and SQL

2008-04-10 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
2440588 = days from Jan 1, 4713 BC to Jan 1, 1970

So it would be something like

convert (varchar(10),dateadd(day, Invoicemonth-2440587, '1 January
1970'), 101) 'Invoice Month 1'

Re: RESOLVED: Mid-Tier help

2008-04-10 Thread Brian Gillock
A side note: I had a similar issue trying to get Tomcat to install during
the MT install and it turned out that Tomcat didn't like that my TEMP folder
has spaces in it. I changed my TEMP to c:\temp and it worked fine.

**

Update:

I got it working by doing the following:

Uninstall MT, Uninstall Tomcat.

Download tomcat 5.5. from apache.org.

Install tomcat 5.5 manually

Install mid-tier (without tomcat)

Reboot

Works like a charm. Something about remedy installing tomcat wasn't working.

Thanks so much to all who helped!

Now that you have the right version of Java it might make sense to reinstall
the mid-tier

Re: arserverd 'hangs' (AR 7.0.1 patch 5 - Sol 10 - Ora 10g2)

2008-04-10 Thread George Jungle
Thanks for all the replies guys. I've answered some of your questions

1. Gary Opela (Corporate) [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Is your database local or remote?
 Local

2. Garrison, Sean (Norcross) [EMAIL PROTECTED]
If you are on a unix server check the number of open files being used by the
process. Maybe it has hit the max and locked up your server (why you aren't
seeing anything in the logs).
type in ulimit -a to tell you the limits you have
pfiles process id to tell the number of open files used by the process.
Thanks Sean, will try this out. currently ulimit says :
XX $ ulimit -a
core file size(blocks, -c) unlimited
data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited
file size (blocks, -f) unlimited
open files(-n) 256
pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 10
stack size(kbytes, -s) 8192
cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited
max user processes(-u) 29995
virtual memory(kbytes, -v) unlimited

3. Roger Medsker [EMAIL PROTECTED]
This doesn't help identify the root cause but the question
changes from Why does the server 'hang'? to Why is the server
restarting?

Ok. Thanks Roger. will give that a go next time it hangs... only prob is
it's intermittent and we really can't have SQL logging on all the time
will figure something out.

4. Tadeu Augusto Dutra Pinto [EMAIL PROTECTED]
one question
how many records does your AR System Email Messages has???

2,063,253 records... Delete Outgoing Messages is set to No. Will have
to get that changed! Does this sound like a lot of rows to you?

(i.e. all processes
running, you get timeouts appearing due to Brie / SLM engine not being able
to connect and db sessions are not 'locked' or taking an extensive amount of
 time to process).

It seems that the only way to fix this is to do a restart of the AR
 Server.

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything remotely
 similar to this?

 Thanks.

 George

Importing an incident record with attachment in Remedy 6.3

2008-04-10 Thread Sanjana AGARWAL
Hello All,

I want to import an incident and Change Requests records having attachments
using the import tool provided by Remedy.

However I don't know the path where I have to store the attachment fields and
to which I have to set the Attachment 1 field.

It's giving me error:
Incorrect field value for field Attachment 1

Regards
Sanjana
