Moving to HP Service Manager 7
Hello there list, that's not going to be a final Good Bye (just some kind of ... :-). We are moving from our home build AR System (building for around 10 years), to an out of the box solution. Migration will take some time of course, so just a small Good Bye. The list has been/is a very cool, helpful, guidance, knowledge base, and friendly international people experience. Thanks a lot for that! Anyone else have been in contact with HP's SM 7, in the one or other way? Hope there is also such an approachable community around, like here! Re: Moving to HP Service Manager 7
HP's apps are a completely different animal. A Peregrine Falcon, in your case. You'll have to learn their programming language (like VB, I think), and that it will take more person-hours to get things done, and that the data model is far more normalized than even ITSM 7. Don't know about a list equivalent, though I hope for the best for you. I'm sure there's at least a yahoo group or something. Re: Best practice? Email engine with two Remedy servers on a single unix box
Steve, I guess if you used something like DSO then you could kind of do that. But If load is not your reason for wanting to do this... then can you explain why you want to do this? I am fairly certain that this setup would be non-standard. Generally that means that the option was either out of scope or that there were decisions made that make that feature impractical or maybe even impossible from a technical perspective. However, I now of no reason why you can not have two Email Engines install on a single host. (and pointed at different ARS servers.) Re: 7.1 Shared Database Install
Frank, I do not know that this will do all of what you want it to do... but have you tried this? : Installing-710.pdf Pg 158 Command options to suppress installation forms To suppress the installation of all installation forms, including the User and Group forms, enter the following command: # ./ar_install -noschemas NOTE: Use this option only when you intend to immediately load forms from a previous installation of AR System. I would think it should be ok to use this option when installing multiple nodes to an app server cluster. Also... check out page 34... it has this to say: Upgrading servers in a server group To upgrade servers that are part of a server group, remember these guidelines: * Stop all AR System servers except the server that owns the Admin operation. (To verify this, open the Configuration tab on the AR System Administration: Server Information form, and make sure that the Disable Admin Operations check box is not selected.) * Upgrade the server that owns the Admin operation first. Select the Upgrade (AR System database) option during the upgrade. * Upgrade the other servers in the group next. Select the Share (AR System database) option. * Do not start the non-Admin servers before performing the upgrade installation on them. So ... maybe if the ARS Server is stopped then it can not talk to the DB? Maybe the Share install simply updates the file system and quietly errors about failed imports? Creating an Automated Email System
Hello List, I need some inputs on creating an Automated E-mail application where a Customer sends an ordinary e-mail to an inbox which will be submitted to the ARS Inbox. I am planning to have all the e-mails from this inbox get submitted to a holding form where I can have choice of creating a new ticket, add to existing ticket or deleting the e-mail. I am planning on having a filter fire when a new E-mail arrives so it gets submitted to the Email Holding form where agents can take further actions on the email. Any input will be much appreciated. Re: Creating an Automated Email System
Not sure what help you require, but FWIW this is how I would approach it. First of all create your data form where the emails are stored. Try and keep the fields to a minimum to help the email submitter quickly create a ticket. Then build a control panel that views the data form and adds the functionality you described. In terms of delete I would be inclined to implement a soft delete using a Status in case of erroneous deletions. Finally create the email template from your data form, use Email Instructions to make the template the submitter uses to be as simple as possible. i.e. The body of the email gets parsed into a single char field without the need for the !12345678! field identifiers. And don't forget indexes and archiving if the volumes warrant it. Re: DSO Question
Man, that's a heck of a lot of data to be pushing down the pipe via DSO. This statement... we would like that when server A is unavailable ...begs the question, Why is server A unavailable at times? -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Rudolf Schwarzkopf Sent: Tuesday, October 28, 2008 9:44 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: DSO Question ** Hi List, We have two ITSM 7 servers, each one used by different groups of users. However, we would like that when server A is unavailable, its users will be able to connect to server B. This way server B would hold server A data as well as its own data. Server A will just have server A data. In order to do that, we thought about using DSO. Has anyone configured DSO to synchronize ITSM 7.x servers? I know that a lot of mapping would need to be done in order to have the servers synched (Incident/Problem/Change/SLM/Foundation data). Is there any detailed documentation or mappings from BMC that can be used? I've found a white paper from BMC that describes how to configure ID prefixes to use DSO. However it is not detailed and a whole analysis will be required to know all the forms/fields that need to be mapped/synched. Is it feasible to synch Foundation data? (Remembering that IDs will be different in both servers, since server B is also used by another group of users). For instance, when an incident goes from server A to backup server B, if a field holds the support group ID, in server B the synched support group ID might be different. Or issued like this should not happen? Would DSO be the best approach to achieve this objective? Has anyone implemented another solution to achieve this kind of objective? Re: Best practice? Email engine with two Remedy servers on a single unix box
I don't see why you couldn't. The EmailDaemon.properties file supports the definition of multiple arservers. The email engine should be able to connect to multiple servers in this way. It can read the mailbox config from each server and poll for messages from each server. Never tried it first hand, but it should be possible. com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.servers=server1 server2 com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.server1.Authentication= com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.server1.Interval=30 com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.server1.Language=en_US com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.server1.Password=xxx=== com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.server1.TCP= com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.server2.Authentication= com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.server2.Interval=30 com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.server2.Language=en_US com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.server2.Password=xxx=== com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.server2.TCP= Not too sure of the com.remedy.arsys.emaildaemon.servers value format, just guessing with the space, but it looks like other java properties files use this notation. To Carey's point, there are no issues with running multiple email engines on the same host. Who has done any password management while using AREA LDAP Authentication
ITSM 7, ARS 7.1 Our issue is that while our LDAP password rules are good, we have some accounts solely in Remedy (utility accounts) for which we need to enforce password rules. The password Management function does not look like an option. We'd need to keep it disabled for the LDAP folks (99%) which would be a logistical nightmare. I'm leaning towards disabling the password change abilities for all users except contact people admin. I'm on a short deadline to come up with a solution, and the volume of passwords we would have to manage would be minimal. Re: Who has done any password management while using AREA LDAP Authentication
I haven't used Remedy's password management, but Roger's suggestion sounds good if Remedy will let you evaluate the password field contents in a qualification. I don't think it will let you directly do that, though. If that's true, how about a naming convention on the utility accounts that you could search against (i.e., util-1, util-2, etc.), or perhaps even adding an (admittedly unsupported) selection field on the User form to mark the accounts you want to exclude. Re: Who has done any password management while using AREA LDAP Authentication
All of our customer accounts (170,000) that are populated from LDAP (and authenticate to LDAP) get this checkbox selected as part of the integration that creates their CTM:People and User records. The 300 manually created and managed support staff accounts with local passwords are left subject to the OOTB password management rules. It was not that hard to separate the two types of users in our case, and they have been coexisting with no apparent problems. One caution if you modify any of the password management workflow - if you ever apply any patch to the AR Server using the installer, it will restore the original OOTB version of the password management workflow. My understanding is that the CI Name is used in the CMDB to identify assets so if the asset tag is JMR452 - that's not much of a naming convention.? And changing the CI Name everytime an asset is moved sounds like an administrative disaster.? I recommended a fixed naming convention.? Re: CI Name Format
My recollection of the ITIL concept of CI name is that it should be a generic identification of the function of the CI and should not include serial numbers, mfg information etc. There are no unique constraints on CI name either -- as you can have multiples in different datasets. There is a lot of good information in the Malcom Fry book - Step-by-Step Guide to Building a CMDB available through BMC. I can't find the section on CI naming but I do recall it being present. Also, what your thoughts are regaring the CI Name. My understanding is that the CI Name is used in the CMDB to identify assets so if the asset tag is JMR452 - that's not much of a naming convention. And changing the CI Name everytime an asset is moved sounds like an administrative disaster. I recommended a fixed naming convention. Am I off base:? McCain or Obama? Opinion needed - Service hangs on db disconnect
Just looking for an opinion or two, anecdotes...etc...etc We've got a high availability setup with two SQL clusters. If one fails, the other takes over. This is usually just a second or two so the Remedy application servers rarely even hiccup when this occurs. There have been occasions though where the failover takes a couple minutes and/or the database just isn't available for a couple of minutes. Instead of reconnecting in the background, in those instances, the app actually locks and the app servers need to be bounced. Has anyone noticed this or something similar? If so, what is your opinion? Sorry this is a bit vague...I've just seen this behavior a few times and the reaction is just usually a bounce. Like to have something more concrete, or at least consensual, to pass along to users as to why... Anything's appreciated. Thanks! Re: Adding days to a Date field in a qualification doesn't work
Mark, I'm having the same problems with Date fields for some time now (these are Date only fields, not Date/Time fields). I think it DOES have something to do with the quotation marks. When I do this: 'mydate' 6/21/2008 it works, But when I do: 'mydate' ($DATE$ - (((60 * 60) * 24) * 120)) It doesn't work. I've tried 'mydate' ($DATE$ - (((60 * 60) * 24) * 120)) as well. I've tried 'mydate' ($TIMESTAMP$ - (((60 * 60) * 24) * 120)) as well. I like LJ's suggestion, but the question is, where does the ztmp_datefield field go if you are doing a escalation? On every single record? (I would like to delete all records that are more than 120 days old) note to self: NEVER use date fields. ALWAYS use Date/Time fields and make the display type Date if you want a date field If 'mydate' was a date/time field (whether it be displayed as date or date/time) this query would work just fine Lisa -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mark Milke Sent: Tuesday, October 28, 2008 6:56 AM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Adding days to a Date field in a qualification doesn't work An easy way to do this is to use the multipliers. Re: Adding days to a Date field in a qualification doesn't work
Hi, Lisa: I have had to deal with a similar conversion. We have a Self-Service application that pushes entries into our Helpdesk form. The field on the Self-Service form is Date/Time. The field that this Self-Service date/time field is being pushed into is a DATE field. So, I did the following: I set a temp field with the input date, and then do a conversion. Set Fields 1: zTmpInteger = $InputDateTime$ Set Fields 2: zTmpInteger = TRUNC(($zTmpInteger$ / 86400)) + 2440588 The new zTimpInteger is pushed into my Date only field into the Helpdesk form. Note: 2440588 is the number of days between Jan 1, 4713 B.C. and Jan 1, 1970. It will always be the constant and will never change. Re: Adding days to a Date field in a qualification doesn't work
You could additionally push the value from the date/time field (integer) into a plain character field. This will give the usable date format, such as 10/27/2008 05:22:01AM. Then, you could do another set fields to the Date Field that takes just the first 10 characters of what is in the char field, and pushes that over to the date field. I'll bet that would work as long as you are not performing any math, but I've never tried it, so I'm not sure. Merging of non-reconciled child CIs
I'm looking for a method whereby I can enforce a slow and methodical inclusion of hosts into BMC ASSET from discovery tool datasets. By not auto-identifying BMC_ComputerSystem instances in the discovery tool dataset, I can prevent them from being merged into BMC ASSET unless a BMC_ComputerSystem instance already exists in BMC ASSET and can be matched via the identification group rules. However, for child CIs (harddrives, installed software, etc) I'd like to not have this same constraint. I want them to automatically merge with their parent BMC_ComputerSystem instance once that instance has been reconciled to a BMC ASSET computer system instance. It seems to me that when creating a merge activity, the include child CI's? option should facilitate this type of functionality. However, even when I set this option to yes Atrium refuses to merge Computer System child CIs with their associated parent instance. Can anyone shed some light on how best to achieve this sort of functionality (if its even possible)? I don't want to have to hand create each computer system child CI in BMC ASSET before their associated CIs in the discovery dataset can be merged, but I also don't want to firehose all the child CIs into BMC ASSET either, which is what happens when I auto-identify them. Re: Who has done any password management while using AREA LDAP Authentication
Correct me if I'm wrong, but anyone with an LDAP account could update their password (for instance to password). That would give them a weak password, they would subsequently NOT authenticate through LDAP - by virtue of having a non NULL password, and they would still not be subject to any password management. To reiterate, this is a security finding that we have to ENSURE strong password management. -- Chris Danaceau This e-mail and its attachments are confidential and solely for the intended addressee(s). It was not that hard to separate the two types of users in our case, and they have been coexisting with no apparent problems. Also... check out page 34... it has this to say: Upgrading servers in a server group To upgrade servers that are part of a server group, remember these guidelines: * Stop all AR System servers except the server that owns the Admin operation. I checked in the documentation and found that both $DATE$ and $TIMESTAMP$ resolve to current date when used with a Date field (not to be confused with a Date/Time field set to display as Date). It appears that the arithmetic is not being performed in the comparisons. 'my_date_field' ($DATE$ - 120) and 'my_date_field' ($DATE$ - 120) is functioning the same as 'my_date_field' $DATE$ Looking through documentation, I was not able to find examples of Advanced Searches using a Date field with addition or subtraction. Re: Creating an Automated Email System
You might want to try to automate this a little by creating a form that stores keywords to look for in an e-mail and push data to create an entry in whatever system you want. Also keep in mind Oracle is case sensitive if that is your DB. In my previous job we did something similar by allowing departments to create their own front end interface that sent an e-mail to remedy to generate tickets. If the user replied it would go into the worklog of the ticket and in some cases re-open it if it was resolved. The only thing to be careful of is if the system you are getting an e-mail from is an automated system that sends auto-replies. You can get into an e-mail loop and you have to build code to handle that. I am planning on having a filter fire when a new E-mail arrives so it gets submitted to the Email Holding form where agents can take further actions on the email. Any input will be much appreciated. Re: CI Name Format
Best practice is to define a naming standard that can be used universally. For example: Class_AssetTag = ComputerSystem_1234 Taking ComputerSystems, Ideally the name should not use serial number as that is not unique, rather use the name given to the computer which many organisations duplicate as the AssetTag. The key thing is that the Asset Tag is unique. If I were implementing CMDB in your organisation I’d be going back to basics in order to define what the Configuration Management process is. There is nothing wrong with renaming an asset per se, however this should be carefully managed to ensure the CMDB is correctly updated with new relationships and attributes. If you were using discovery tools then a duplicate could be created where a match on name was not found, however as you are manually managing your data you may find that issue does not arise, if strict procedures are put in place. Without a proper process your data is not going to be controlled, and that is one of the main reasons for using a CMDB. My personal view is with you, to enable control it is much easier to define the name of the device to match an asset tag which is applied to the CI from the outset, and if the CI is ever rebuilt and reused it keeps the same tag. Caveat – I’m referring to physical CIs, a different approach is sometimes defined for logical and software CIs. We are updating CI's manually. Can the CI name be the asset tag number? I could not find the CI naming convention in the Malcom Fry book either. -Original Message- From: Matt Worsdell [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Sent: Wed, 29 Oct 2008 3:29 pm Subject: Re: CI Name Format ** Kathy This can be a minefield, can you tell us all how you are updating CIs, through AIE automatically or manual process? And also what is the process around “transferring” an Asset. The team also wants to have the CI Name equal to the unique name of the asset tag. I am not for this method - however I was wondering has anybody tried this type of methodology. _ McCain or Obama? Re: Merging of non-reconciled child CIs
Tim If the child CIs have not been given an RE id then they won't merge. You could run a separate merge activity with auto discover on, or alternatively a copy job and specify the classes for inclusion. Product Categories CMDB Verification
Hi All - we are going to be moving to ITSM 7 in the next few months but we wanted to verify some things before we go too far have to do a lot of rework. What we wanted to verify was the Product Catalog. We are assuming that the CMDB, Incident (Assignment Resolution), Change, Knowledge Management, ... use the same catalog (e.g., if we add something it is available in all the modules). Is that correct or am I way off base? Thanks!!! Re: Product Categories CMDB Verification
Each product category can be allocated to whatever modules you want them to appear in. It can be assigned to all modules, or any combination of modules that you wish. Re: Merging of non-reconciled child CIs
Matt, It sounds like the functionality I am looking for is not there. I was hoping for some kind of middle ground between manually adding every CI into BMC ASSET then reconciling to get the attributes synced up (very slow), or auto-identifying all CIs in the discovery dataset and firehosing them all into BMC ASSET (very fast, but difficult to validate). If you were only forced to manually populate Computer System CIs into BMC ASSET, and the discovery dataset child CIs could auto-identify once their computer system parent was identified, it would be a very good compromise. On this same topic, computer system child CIs should also have the option of inheriting ownership/support data/relationships and asset lifecycle data/relationships from their parent computer system CIs. A lot of work needs to be done here to enhance the maintainability of large CI count production datasets. -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Matt Worsdell Sent: Wednesday, October 29, 2008 3:15 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Merging of non-reconciled child CIs Tim If the child CIs have not been given an RE id then they won't merge. Re: Creating an Automated Email System
My 2 cents to update an existing ticket from incoming emails. 1. Create a Staging Form that will have all the Incoming Emails. This staging form will have fields - Subject, Message, Incident ID, Task ID, and Service Request ID etc…. 2. Create Filter(s) that fires on submit with a Run If qualification(s) of INC0% or REQ0% or WO0% or TAS0% or CRQ% parse the respective number (using functions STRSTR, LTRIM, SUBSTR) and set it into the corresponding field. 3. Then, push it to the corresponding work log. This assumes that · The Subject Line of the email will contain Incident/Request/Work Order/Task ID. · It is an ITSM 7 environment.
