Generally a 'rm' or 'del' works for me.

If the file does not exist it will be recreated.

Of course a 'rename A B;copy B ARCHIVE' is advisable as well

Re: Migrator error

2008-12-10 Thread Robert Molenda
Can you please provide a sample list (short list) of Filters you are seeing
this on?

Also a DEF file of Source & Destination filter(s) would be
good as a reference also.

There is some "character set" translation going on... which per your
environment "should not be happening"...

Thanks

All ~ we are using (and want to keep) single-tenancy mode but we want

Support=20

This is as-designed, correct? This should be simple to adjust but since

I never tried getting it to work with CR 10 - I don't recall why.

I searched your post and found one - but i did not have any luck with
it. Here are the details:

1. ARS box OS is Windows server 2003
2. Mid-tier server is on a separate OS - also windows 2003.
3. No - it is not business objects, but Crystal 10 - not sure the what

Search for previous posts by me on this topic :)

Quick questions:

1.) What is your ARS box OS?
2.) Is your mid-tier server remote? And what is it's OS?
3.) Do you have a BOXI/CE box? Is it on Windows? And what version of
BOXI/CE?

**
Has anyone come across configuring the reports to work for mid-tier
using Tomcat instead of IIS.
The install/admin guide for Mid-tier only describes how to do it via IIS
and not Tomcat.
In reading the guide, I understand a virtual drive needs to be setup for
IIS but just wondering if anyone has any documentation or a guide on the
steps needed to configure this.
Users are getting error ARERR 9260 even when trying to print an existing
ticket.
We are running 7.1 client & latest mid-tier on patch 5.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: If you have ITSM 7 & SLM 7...Please Tell me What's on Your armonitor.conf

2008-12-10 Thread Tony Worthington
BMC has yet to rewrite the majority of the plugins to use the new java
plugin server. You are still required to use the C version
unless you need a java plugin running defined in pluginsvr_config.xml
(SAMPLE.FILTERAPI, SAMPLE.FILTERAPI2, SAMPLE.AREA, or
ARSYS.ARF.WEBSERVICE.)

We run both here (with SLM) and have no issues.

I think a better approach would be to turn on debugging for the "old"
plug-in server and see what it tells you.

Hi all:
If you have ITSM & and SLM 7 running, can you please
check your armonitor.conf file and tell me if it
contains either or both of these lines for plugin
server?
--
/app/arsystem/arsys2/bin/arplugin -s remedy002 -i
/app/arsystem/arsys2

java -Xmx512m -classpath
/app/arsystem/arsys2/pluginsvr:/app/arsystem/arsys2/pluginsvr/arpluginsvr71.jar
com.bmc.arsys.pluginsvr.ARPluginServerMain -x
remedy002 -i /app/arsystem/arsys2 -m

It appears they both have similar purposes, and the
second one can/should actually replace the first one
(see page 295 of "Configuring..." guide for 7.1), but
I am not too sure.

We're having plugin issues, so I am trying to find out
if presence of both of these on armonitor.conf has
anything to do with it.

Regards.

This question is related to the following post:
"7.1 armonitor.conf: Does java based plugin server

SQL Set fields action when a selection list pops up.

If you have ITSM 7 & SLM 7...Please Tell me What's on Your armonitor.conf

2008-12-10 Thread Rabi Tripathi
Hi all:
If you have ITSM & and SLM 7 running, can you please
check your armonitor.conf file and tell me if it
contains either or both of these lines for plugin
server?
--
/app/arsystem/arsys2/bin/arplugin -s remedy002 -i
/app/arsystem/arsys2

java -Xmx512m -classpath
/app/arsystem/arsys2/pluginsvr:/app/arsystem/arsys2/pluginsvr/arpluginsvr71.jar
com.bmc.arsys.pluginsvr.ARPluginServerMain -x
remedy002 -i /app/arsystem/arsys2 -m
-
It appears they both have similar purposes, and the
second one can/should actually replace the first one
(see page 295 of "Configuring..." guide for 7.1), but
I am not too sure.

We're having plugin issues, so I am trying to find out
if presence of both of these on armonitor.conf has
anything to do with it.

Regards.

2008-12-10 Thread Rob Cvetkovski
William,

I searched your post and found one - but i did not have any luck with it. Here
are the details:

1. ARS box OS is Windows server 2003
2. Mid-tier server is on a separate OS - also windows 2003.
3. No - it is not business objects, but Crystal 10 - not sure the what server,
windows box it is on.

Search for previous posts by me on this topic :)

Quick questions:

1.) What is your ARS box OS?
2.) Is your mid-tier server remote? And what is it's OS?
3.) Do you have a BOXI/CE box? Is it on Windows? And what version of BOXI/CE?

Has anyone come across configuring the reports to work for mid-tier using

The install/admin guide for Mid-tier only describes how to do it via IIS and
not Tomcat.
In reading the guide, I understand a virtual drive needs to be setup for IIS
but just wondering if anyone has any documentation or a guide on the steps
needed to configure this.
Users are getting error ARERR 9260 even when trying to print an existing ticket.
We are running 7.1 client & latest mid-tier on patch 5.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: SLM Business times based on Priority

2008-12-10 Thread Danaceau, Chris
I'd agree with Matthew. I created several sets of Service targets
(i.e, Incident Reassignment), with separate targets for each priority.
I have time segments for 24X7, 8 - 6, 9 - 5, etc. Never had any
problem with the wrong time segment attaching.

What we did to handle this was setup different Service Targets with the
different priorities (one Service Target for Critical and High, One
Service Target for Medium/Low).

Then attached the different Time Segments to the different Service
targets.

The thing with Time Segments is they apply to the WHOLE Service Target
(you picked the Time Segment on Step 2 correct?), not just certain
milestones in the service target.

Although I have defined these segments, but the Medium and Low are still
picking up the 24 hour segment. Any ideas how to make this work?

Re: 7.1 armonitor.conf: Does java based plugin server make the "arplugin" unnecessary??

2008-12-10 Thread Thad K Esser
This was BMC Support's answer in October 2007:

"So I've confirmed that right now there aren?t any plugins
being loaded by the Java plugin server that Support is aware of, and
unless you?ve planned to write a custom Java plugin, you probably don?t
need to run it. You can comment out the line that starts it in the
armonitor.conf and leave the other one running."

I disabled it then, and haven't had any problems, but I'm not using SLM
yet either.

Re: 7.1 armonitor.conf: Does java based plugin server make the "arplugin" unnecessary??

2008-12-10 Thread Rabi Tripathi
Thanks for the info William.

We do have collector module. I am being told that both
plugins CAN coexist and should be there.

It just doesn't feel right to me. I would think having
the java based one makes the regular one unnecessary
(notwithstanding William's observation that the java
based one wasn't much stable for him)

Anybody with ITSM 7 and SLM 7 including the collector
module---can you please tell me if you are using
either one or both on your armonitor.conf?

Thanks.

No, I have not - and I have been using Migrator 7.1 from beta to patch 003 on a

Mine is _en_ only, as is the underlying db. It looks like something is stored

Migrator error

Has anyone else seen the following error in Migrator 7.1 no patch
difference reports? Link is to a screen shot of the error. I checked the
qualifiers in the Admin tool and they are the same.

That's a possibility. However, it think it's more likely that the developer
simply didn't try to validate it before showing the window.

The fact that lots of application exhibit this behavior doesn't necessarily
mean that it's a problem with the OS. It is not the OS's job to prevent you
from opening a window off screen. There are valid reasons to want to do
that from time to time. It is the developer's responsibility to program
intelligently. The OS is capable of telling the application how large the
desktop is, etc. If you're going to save the last location of a window so
you can open it there again, it makes sense that you would make sure that
the saved location is still valid the next time you show the window.

This isn't just a Remedy issue - outlook "likes" to open messages on the

Well, I sent it off to my customer to try,

ARS 7.1: arerror.log says Server Terminated, server still up, but hung

2008-12-10 Thread Rabi Tripathi
Hi all:
arerror.log says server terminated, with signal 10.
---
Tue Dec 9 10:54:06 2008 0 : AR System server
terminated when a signal/exception was received by the
server (ARNOTE 20)
Tue Dec 9 10:54:06 2008 10
Tue Dec 9 10:54:06 2008 0 : AR System server
terminated -- fatal error encountered (ARNOTE 21)
--

Strangely, arserverd is still up and appears normal
when checked with unix commands.

However, server is not behaving normally. Users can't
login, with hung screen, or do login with errors
("plugin server not responding") and get unusable
screens. Users already logged in complain of slowness
or white screens.

The only feasible recovery is AR System restart.

This has happened once each day for the last few days.

There are hardly 10 users on the system, mostly using
Incidents. Not much data. No huge queries. Almost no
CMDB stuff going on. Some SLAs in play. ARS/Oracle are
on powerful Sun-Fire-T200 machines.

What's going on? Anybody seen this?

ARS 7.1 p2. ITSM 7 p5(I think; some customizations;
with SLM, SRM, RKM). Oracle 10g, Solaris 10.

Some more info:
Other logs show that each time the signal 10 appears,
there was some kind of admin activity that had
happened moments ago on Remedy User. Such as somebody
checking list of logged in users, or checking or
setting data on "Server Info" form.

/var/adm/messages has an interesting clue:

Dec 9 10:54:06 remedy002 arplugin[22764]: [ID 755532
user.error] 0 : AR System server terminated when a
signal/exception was received by the server (ARNOTE

Dec 9 10:54:06 remedy002 arplugin[22764]: [ID 970746
user.error] 0 : AR System server terminated -- fatal
error encountered (ARNOTE 21)
---

Note the same timestamp as on arerror.log.

So, it appears that the entity that wrote on
arerror.log was arplugin. Is arplugin saying arplugin
is going down, or is it saying arserverd is going
down?

Could it be that arplugin thought, for whatever
reason, arserverd was going down, and decided to stop
functioning...such that any future interactions from
arserverd were ignored...resulting in the symptoms I
described...essentially halting anything to do with
plugins...or worse?? We don't use LDAP, so not sure
how plugins come into play during login. May be on the
home page?

Any thoughts?

TIA.

The more I think about it, the more I come to a similar conclusion. The
application controls where the window opens, this is proved by the
ar.ini file as discussed earlier.

The application should first check to ensure that said location is
valid, if not, then fall back to 0,0,0,0. It's a simple check, but, in
my opinion, is necessary.

Another option would be to bind the new window to the existing remedy
frame, just like a menu or a pop-up from expanding a character field is
bound, you cannot drag it beyond the boarder of the remedy window.

Gary,

You can have him open the object list and hit this key sequence
Alt-Space, then hit M, then hit left arrow. then start moving his mouse
and the object list will be attached to the mouse. Alt-Space opens up
the context menu for the active window, M is the hotkey for 'move'.
Hitting the left arrow starts moving the window and attaches the mouse
to itthen starting to move the mouse moves the window into the
confines of the visible space because windows won't let you move your
mouse onto that nonexistent second monitor. I got this from my years
doing desktop support...works every time for me over the years.

I have a user who moved from dual-monitors to single monitors and
unfortunately the object list window is opening on the non-existent
second monitor. I had him wipe out his ar.ini, just to see if maybe that
is where remedy stored the location of the pop-up, but that didn't work.

Does anyone have any ideas (other than hooking up a second monitor again
and dragging it over)? I would have thought that remedy would have been
smart enough to know there was only a single monitor hooked up.

Agreed, although I think its possibly a mix of OS and applications at fault

I almost see it as an OS issue then... The OS should take care of that.
But I'm sure that they'll say it's an application issue. You should
bring up the outlook issue with them (Microsoft), at least that way they
couldn't point fingers at the vendor/os maker :)

Error creating Incidents from Requester Console

2008-12-10 Thread Edward Womack
Hello Listers

I am working  in a Microsoft 2003, SQL 2005, ARS 7.1, ITSM 7.03 environment

Has anyone encountered the below problem when attempting to create an incident
from the ITSM 7.03 Requester Console?

PROBLEM:

I can create and have Change Requests with no problem. However when trying to
create an incident the Reqeust ID field remains "in process" and a reqeust ID
is never created.  When I check the "view error entry the below message is
presented.

ARCreateEntry - Required field cannot be reset to a NULL valueHPD:Help Desk :
Product Categorization Tier 1, but the value is clearly present in the record.

Any suggestions you can provide to resolve/troubleshoot this issue would be
greatly appreciated.

Phil,

I found it was stripping text sections at certain characters (I think the
ampersand), but that wasn't personal experience - we have users who perform
bulk uploads of customer specific data. For myself I've never had the need to
import anything other than simple text, or anything more complicated goes
through exports via the user tool as .arx files before importing again.

The data is invariably coming in from an Excel sheet though, and there's always
a good chance of Excel pulling some stunts with certain characters when it
generates the CSV.

2008-12-10 Thread Barber, David
All,

Got a little question on the Import Tool - version 7.0.1 against a v7 Solaris
server, with an Oracle backend.

I'm sure there are a few characters that, for whatever reason, the import tool
doesn't like - be it #, _ or some others. Has anyone else experienced
something similar with the tool? This is from CSV uploads.

BMC Software cut 350 jobs, including 50 here in
Houston

By BRAD HEM Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle
Dec. 5, 2008, 12:03PM

BMC Software will cut 350 jobs, including 50 in
its hometown of Houston, by the end of the month, the company said today
in a regulatory filing.

The cuts are expected to cost the company $18
million to $23 million in severance and other termination costs, which
will be booked in the third and fourth quarters of 2009, BMC said.

Company leaders committed to make the cuts on
Nov. 20 and notified employees this morning. The layoffs will hit a
variety of types of workers in several countries where the company
operates. The company has about 1,100 workers in Houston and about 5,900
worldwide.

BMC said future work force reductions may be
needed if global economic conditions continue to deteriorate.

As far as I know, you will need to re-import (or re-create) the monitor CI
as the appropriate class and delete the one mistakenly created as a
ComputerSystem.

You should also investigate how the Monitor got created as a ComputerSystem
in the first place.

Peter, we have the same problem so it doesn't seem to be uncommon.
Manually remove the record and recreate it in the proper class. Create the
new CI to CI relationships also. You'll need to decide if you want to
recreate whatever other relationships are out there - ITSM records, tasks,
ect.

I would suspect that the "real" ar.ini file was missed. Or maybe the app wasn't
shut down and it re-wrote the file on quitting.

I don't have it in front of me to check, but I -really- hope it's not stored in
the pref server. Machine specific settings certainly shouldn't be stored there.

This bug has been around forever, by the way. It's really quite frustrating
that it hasn't been fixed yet.

The other similarly silly bug is the one that causes Guide windows to open in
all sorts of strange ways and places in the Admin tool.

I haven't tried it but if there is an ODBC for MySQL you could probably
create a database view of the MySQL data in your MSSQL database. You

I almost see it as an OS issue then... The OS should take care of that.
But I'm sure that they'll say it's an application issue. You should
bring up the outlook issue with them (Microsoft), at least that way they
couldn't point fingers at the vendor/os maker :)

This isn't just a Remedy issue - outlook "likes" to open messages on the
secondary screen if thats where they were last opened, exactly the same
as the Remedy User tool does with the object list.

Related to this - have the user tool open on a secondary screen, right
click on an attachment box, and the "Add/Remove/View" options appear on
the far right of the primary screen

'tis a right royal pain, but I've seen it happen on other applications
as well

Gary,
You can have him open the object list and hit this key sequence
Alt-Space,
then hit M, then hit left arrow. then start moving his mouse and the
object
list will be attached to the mouse. Alt-Space opens up the context menu
for
the active window, M is the hotkey for 'move'.
Hitting the left arrow starts moving the window and attaches the mouse
to
itthen starting to move the mouse moves the window into the confines
of
the visible space because windows won't let you move your mouse onto
that
nonexistent second monitor. I got this from my years doing desktop

path. That might have been the problem, since the users don't have
access to write to the default install path, we set them up with a
folder in their profile to save all of their arcmds and everything. I
was not at his desk, so I'm not sure if he pulled the ini from default
path, or from his user home.

That could be. I've not had to pursue that one.

I've found this one where we have folks setup with dual monitors but
they are set up with the primary monitor on the right and the secondary
on the left. They pull the menu from the primary and drop in on the
secondary. When they start up using the monitor on the laptop, the menu
disappears. If this change is made or the ar.ini file is deleted then
everything comes back to normal.

The other thought I just had is we have some computers with multiple
copies of the ar.ini file on the drive. Was the active file the one
that was deleted or one that was stored in one of the older standard
directories?

Gary,

There is another way. Open the ar.ini file. Look for the section
starting
with [TSI]. In that section replace the values after Placement= with
0;0;0;0 It should look like this:
Placement=0;0;0;0

Save the file and start up the client. The menu will now display in the
upper left corner of the single monitor.

Gary,
You can have him open the object list and hit this key sequence
Alt-Space,

Hitting the left arrow starts moving the window and attaches the mouse

the JSP engine and run a full Apache web server as the front end as an app
firewall and for static content. We have tried various combinations of
mod_proxy, mod_rewrite and even tried mod_proxy_html.

We want to proxy traffic on :443/arsys to :8080/arsys on the same server.
Static pages work fine, our proxy for :443/rkm to :8080/rkm works and even
the Mid-Tier configuration works from :443/arsys/shared/config/config.jsp
to :8080/arsys/shared/config/config.jsp.

We also tried setting up a ProxyFilter section in C:\Program Files\AR
System\Mid-Tier\WEB-INF\web.xml as suggested in "Configuring Apache 2.0.x
to work as a Proxy server using mod_proxy on UNIX" (KM-00025464)
without any success (after restarting Tomcat).
When we try to access an actual Remedy form, the new 7.1 Loading icon sits
in the middle of the page and nothing ever happens, not an even timeout.
We have set the MT logs to Fine and watching the logs do not show any
activity during this Loading period (no looping).

The last line of the log if access by :8080 directly or through Apaches
:443 is:

Opening the same URL path from :8080/arsys is 93 lines and :443/arsys is
only 30 lines (let me know if you wish to see the missing content, this
posting is getting long enough without it)

Has anybody else running a full Apache front end had these kinds of
issues?
Any suggestions as to the proper way to configure this type of setup (I am
not terribly Apache literate)?

2008-12-10 Thread Barber, David
During the day I'm working on two monitors, and before leaving (and being
on-call on an evening) have to ensure that everything opens on the primary
laptop display.

This isn't just a Remedy issue - outlook "likes" to open messages on the
secondary screen if thats where they were last opened, exactly the same as the
Remedy User tool does with the object list.

Related to this - have the user tool open on a secondary screen, right click on
an attachment box, and the "Add/Remove/View" options appear on the far right of
the primary screen

'tis a right royal pain, but I've seen it happen on other applications as well

Dear All,

My requirement is whenever our customer sends an email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] i need this to automatically store in Incident
/Problem/Change form . once it is assigned our support person should be able
to send emails through Remedy with latest work info, status etc...

Emails which are sent by our support team should have Incident number,
priority etc in email subject .

Basically i want to integrate outlook with remedy , so that our support
people should not go back to outlook to send emails.

Please let me know if there are better ideas than which i have mentioned.

Thanks in advance

Salma

Betreff: Proxy Apache Web Server to Tomcat issues

** We are working on bring up a new web server. We want to use Tomcat
for the JSP engine and run a full Apache web server as the front end as
an app firewall and for static content. We have tried various
combinations of mod_proxy, mod_rewrite and even tried mod_proxy_html.

We want to proxy traffic on :443/arsys to :8080/arsys on the same
server. Static pages work fine, our proxy for :443/rkm to :8080/rkm
works and even the Mid-Tier configuration works from
:443/arsys/shared/config/config.jsp to
:8080/arsys/shared/config/config.jsp.

We also tried setting up a ProxyFilter section in C:\Program Files\AR
System\Mid-Tier\WEB-INF\web.xml as suggested in "Configuring Apache
2.0.x to work as a Proxy server using mod_proxy on UNIX"
(KM-00025464) without any success (after restarting Tomcat).
When we try to access an actual Remedy form, the new 7.1 Loading icon
sits in the middle of the page and nothing ever happens, not an even
timeout. We have set the MT logs to Fine and watching the logs do not
show any activity during this Loading period (no looping).

The last line of the log if access by :8080 directly or through Apaches
:443 is:

Dec 9, 2008 12:11:38 PM - FINE (com.remedy.log.SERVLET) :
server:||app:null||form:Home Page||view:Support
View||file:||appResource:null||size:3

Opening the same URL path from :8080/arsys is 93 lines and :443/arsys is
only 30 lines (let me know if you wish to see the missing content, this
posting is getting long enough without it)

Has anybody else running a full Apache front end had these kinds of
issues?
Any suggestions as to the proper way to configure this type of setup (I
am not terribly Apache literate)?
