Re: Create ARDBC plugins to connect to other database sources

2011-01-25 Thread Jarl Grøneng
Hi,

Take a look at the files: sampleardbc.jar and samplesrc.jar files. They
should be in the \api\javaplugins directory in your server intallastion
directory.

Un-jar these files, and then you got both a compiled and source code of an
ardbc - jdbc plugin.

2011-01-25 Thread John Baker
I believe this and the User account locked are only read by workflow.
One of our clients was quite unhappy when they discovered that locking
an account didn't lock the account, but this may have since been fixed
in 7.6.03?

If it's not fixed then we could implement this in SSO Plugin so locking
an account denies SSO Access to AR System via SSO. It's only an hour or
so of work.

Remedy Application Service Password

2011-01-25 Thread Doug Blair

Hi!AR System 7.5.00 patch 006; ITSM 7.6.1; Atrium 7.6.00 patch 002; Solaris, Oracle(How could it be more succinct than that?)We are running multiple arplugin processes (with separate ar.conf files) in a server group, and have recently changed the Remedy Application Service password. (If you ever do this you'll need to copy the encrypted password into the second ar.conf files.)After several restarts I still find the application service attempting to log in with a password error, which means it must be cached in some other place(s).Does anyone have a *complete* list of all the places the Remedy Application Service account password is stored/used/hidden?Thanks!Doug (no, the other, other, Doug)

Re: 7.6.03 Upgrade gone bad.

2011-01-25 Thread Reiser, John J
I actually was able to get the 7.6.03 Build 001 running. There are issues with
the email engine. And the path for the Tomcat to Midtier link was incorrect in
the arsys.xml file. (BMC Support helped with that one)

As for the Email Engine problem I’ll probably branch a new List item.

And I think the sys admin is going to give me a new VM to load a shared system.
Nice clean build on a new machine. Then we switch off the old server and rename
the new one.

Thanks,

** Technically Yes, but here are the things you need to consider.
When you run the upgrader it will update the binaries on the remedy app folder
as well the meta data in db.
In your case if the db is ok you just want to replace app then you can install
on the same server as shared or as you said you can build a new server as
shared and point to the same db.
But if the db is also having issues then you can only restore from the tape.
In your case you upgraded from 7.1 to 7.6, so that is both db and binaries.
If you want to switch back to 7.1 again then your only option is to restore
from the tape.

 Hey Howard, how are you?

I'm not sure how you are trying to pull the information but I can
think of a couple ways. There is a form called People Permission or
something similar that has a record for each permission granted to a
user--those that require a license and those that don't. If you turn
on filter logging you can find this and then run a report or whatever.
The other way is to query the user form. The permissions are all
concatenated in one field so may not be the easiest to work with but
has all the actual application licenses like Incident User, Change
 Manager, etc.

 Hope this helps.

Re: Force Password Change On Login

2011-01-25 Thread LJ LongWing
Jack,

Unfortunately I do not believe that the pw management stuff is a server
thing, I think the client and mid-tier were programmed to look at that
information and take action.that being said, you would need to write your
API program to do the same.

AR Server version: 7.06.03 Build 001

Using the API, does the ARServerUser.login() method check if 'Force Password
Change On Login' (field 124) is set before logging in the user, or is the
program using the API responsible for checking that field? I didn't see
anything mentioned in the API docs about changes to the login process, but
the login method doesn't seem to care if this field is set or not, it logs
the user in with the old password and allows the user to continue as if the
old password is still valid.

ARS Email Engine 7.6

2011-01-25 Thread Reiser, John J
Hello Listers,

Has anyone been able to get the Email Engine 7.6 running properly on a windows
server using SMTP?
I had an upgrade problem this past weekend and am working through the problems.
The server and midtier are finally working but the email engine is hit or miss.

Email is set by a notification to a group, or an individual and or a user with
multiple addresses delimited with commas.
Some email goes out some doesn't. I have not found a pattern yet.

Plus my html templates are not working in this version.
BMC sent me a new emaildaemon.jar file to replace the one included in the
installation.
That doesn't seem to have the proper fix in it either.

So can I install an older version (7.5 or 7.1) of the email engine for use with
the ARS 7.6.03?

TIA,

Re: View of a View?

2011-01-25 Thread Kemes, Lisa
Thanks everyone for your input.

The 3 columns were just to show what a view of the view looked like. I
actually need the view to have about 20 columns. We are creating a DB Link so
that this data can be imported into a Data Warehouse for heavy duty reporting
capabilities. We usually don't like our DB links to go straight to the T
tables, so we are creating a view. The reason why we are not using the AR
SYSTEM created view is because we need to normalize some of the data and create
new fields etc (that I don't want/need in an actual form). I guess I could
still create a self-join form, but I think I like creating views better.

But I will not be creating a view on top of a view. Sounds like trouble

If we do a migration (which we are actually going to be doing in the next
couple of months - we are getting a new production server), I'll just have to
copy and recreate the views if the T # for the tables change correct?

Thanks everyone!

I need to create a view and need to know the ramifications of creating a view

I could create my view like this:

CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW ARADMIN.TYCO_ADR_SURVEY_TYPE_V (REQUEST_ID,
STATUS, LANGUAGE) AS
 SELECT REQUEST_ID , STATUS, LANGUAGE FROM TEIS_SURVEY_TEXT;

Which would be a view of a view.

Or should I create it like this:

CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW ARADMIN.TYCO_ADR_TEIS_TYPE_V (REQUEST_ID,

Re: Force Password Change On Login

2011-01-25 Thread Jack Boespflug
Thanks for the info. That brings up another question then, what indicates
that the User record is disabled? Is it the Status field set to Disabled,
or some other field that I am not aware of?

When the Status value is set to Disabled, the user can still login. Do I
need to change my application code to also check this field?

John Baker also suggested there is a field called User account locked. I
am not seeing this field on the User form. Does it exist somewhere else?

I will probably need to direct these questions to BMC, but wanted to see if
others have run into this.

Thanks again for any info you have.

Using the API, does the ARServerUser.login() method check if 'Force
Password Change On Login' (field 124) is set before logging in the user, or
is the program using the API responsible for checking that field? I didn't
see anything mentioned in the API docs about changes to the login process,
but the login method doesn't seem to care if this field is set or not, it
logs the user in with the old password and allows the user to continue as if
the old password is still valid.

Re: View of a View?

2011-01-25 Thread Ben Chernys
I do all my views on the ARS views exclusively. These can be quite complex
and include SQL functions, queries, processing of those queries, unions,
sub views, etc.

I think it's a lot better than basing in on the Txxx ( Cxx) fields. The
simple fact that your source SQL uses terms like T1982 and C91818165 makes
it very ugly to maintain. A view on a view (especially the one that ARS
creates) is NO problem and NO trouble. If there is any performance issues
with a complex view there are lots of database things you could do (like
instantiated views as a worst case, simple indexes as needed on the ARS
tables through the ARS developer tool).

That being said, you could make a complicated view where you derive the T
number from arschema and the C number from arfield etc. But why bother?
Again, the SQL source will be more complex and harder to maintain.

The ARS view is one to one with the underlying T table. There is no
performance penalty for using it and the large benefit of an understandable
SQL source.

Cheers

Amazingly this is a major issue.

We are running a server group (ARS 7.1 ITSM 7.0.03 p 9) and are seeing a
strange issue. We use LDAP authentication and have exactly the same LDAP
settings on both servers in the server group...they point to the same
server and use the same user to bind and the same settings to authenticate
users. We have a series of newly created users that can login to one
server in the server group, but not the other. When they can't login
 successfully, we see

 In the arplugin log.
But if the same user logs in on the other server, it all works perfectly.
If this was happening to all users on the problem server, I could
understand that, but it seems to just be those created in the last month
or so. We are working with our AD admins to see if they can see a
problem, but since the working server is using the same AD server, I can't
see how it can be their problem. Any ideas are appreciated.

ARSmarts 2.7 coming soon

2011-01-25 Thread Support
**

Hello List,

Just thought I'd give you a heads-up about the next version of
ARSmarts. It will be version 2.7 and should be released
mid-February. The powerful features of the Navigator and the
Documenter will be enhanced by the support of Applications and
Roles. This means that you will be able to compare Applications, to
search on Roles, to document Applications and Roles,

The Grapher is not impacted by these new features.

I'll keep you posted.

Best regards.

Force Password Change On Login

2011-01-25 Thread John Baker
Jack: I probably meant the disabled field.

LJ: I don't think it's good design to add random fields and then make the
client check them. It's clearly insecure by encouraging administrators to set
'disabled' or 'user must change password' and find users don't have to do so.
The disabled option being ignored by the server is the serious issue: an
account marked as disabled should be disabled, without the need for SSO Plugin
to finish the job. I'm sure BMC will take this on board if they have not
already.

Re: Force Password Change On Login

2011-01-25 Thread LJ LongWing
A LONG time ago, I added a status of 'disabled' to the user form, and any
time the status is set to disabled, I change the password on the account to
$TIMESTAMP$while not a 'random' value, the chances of the user being
able to guess what their password on disable is..so.that's how I disable
accounts..with 7.1 BMC itself added this status so I didn't hafta keep
adding it each time I upgraded..but I still use the same process. That and
the fact that our system integrates with AD for its authentication, makes it
so that if for whatever reason I decide, that the user is disabled, they
can't get in.

Re: Force Password Change On Login

2011-01-25 Thread Easter, David
Currently, the 'Disabled' flag is for informational purposes only and does not
have an effect on the actual user or login process. So yes, you'd need to use
workflow were you to want to do something based on the status of that field.

There have been suggestions that the system should have an indicator on the
technical status (rather than informational status) of a user that has an
effect on whether they can log in or not and this is being considered for a
future release. This dovetails into broader requests to enable, for example,
the disabling of a user for a time period (e.g. while they're on holiday) and
re-enabling them upon their return.

2011-01-25 Thread Ramey, Anne
We are having an issue with the best practices view in IE8 and some IE7 that
the fields, particularly in the customer information section, display on top
of each other. The two panels, the one with Company Customer name
Incident Number and the one with Customer Phone, site, etc. both display at the
same time, leading to a messy look and general confusion. Since it's not all
IE7, I'm thinking it must be one of the internet options settings or something
like that. Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas? It always happens for IE8
users, but only one IE7 user has seen it so far.

Re: Best Practices view issue

2011-01-25 Thread Ramey, Anne
We are having an issue with the best practices view (ars 7.5 p4 ITSM 7.6 p1) in
IE8 and some IE7 that the fields, particularly in the customer information
section, display on top of each other. The two panels, the one with Company
Customer name Incident Number and the one with Customer Phone, site, etc.
both display at the same time, leading to a messy look and general confusion.
Since it's not all IE7, I'm thinking it must be one of the internet options
settings or something like that. Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas? It
always happens for IE8 users, but only one IE7 user has seen it so far.

Oracle Client Question

I am building a 7.5 server on Linux with Oracle 11g. The compatibility matrix
states that only the Oracle 10gR2 client can be used. None higher or lower. Is
that true? This does not make sense to my DBA and I don't have a good

Both the email engine and fb store it in a different configuration file.

For email: EmailDaemon.properties
For FB: server.conf

There are special commands that have to be run to generate the encrypted

See this for an old reference to the commands:

Force Password Change On Login

2011-01-25 Thread John Baker
Hello,

I'm of the view that a user interface that provides a control to mark an
account disabled, it is unreasonable to expect an administrator to know
it doesn't do anything.

It's interesting to note that an experienced user started the topic by
asking a similar question, so if it can fool the experienced, it needs
addressing.

To put this into context, if I use the Active Directory Users and Groups
tool, I can view a disable a user by selecting disable (or whatever the
option may be). The same is true for other user management tools, so an
administrator would and should and expect the same from AR System.

With that in mind, I've added some new functionality to SSO Plugin
version 3.3 to deny SSO access for a user who's entry is marked disabled
and perform one of two actions: Display an informative message
suggesting they contact the service desk, or raise an incident in BMC
ITSM Incident.

Some of the best functionality comes from user feedback, and thank you
to those who have contributed to this thread.

Hi All

I am building a 7.5 server on Linux with Oracle 11g. The compatibility matrix
states that only the Oracle 10gR2 client can be used. None higher or lower. Is
that true? This does not make sense to my DBA and I don't have a good
explanation for him. Anyone know why this is? Has anyone successfully used the
11g client with the 11g server?

Thanks
Mark

Re: Oracle Client Question

2011-01-25 Thread Mueller, Doug
Mark,

When you write code, you have to write to and link to a given version of the
API. That version has a specific
set of calls, with specific parameters, with specific definitions. A different
version of the API may have
different calls and different parameters and different definitions.

When 7.5 was developed, we linked to the Oracle 10gR2 API (Well, if the
compatibility matrix says that is
the version that is it, I don't know otherwise myself). So, we are tied to
that definition.

Now, within the API, that api may be compatible (and it is) with many versions
of Oracle. So, using that API,
you can talk with Oracle 10g, 11g, and other versions as well.

So, you can have any version of Oracle that is compatible with the 10gR2 API,
but we do need the 10gR2 API
installed as that is the interface we are using. The API is part of the Oracle
client hence the version of the
oracle client that must be installed.

We don't have permission to redistribute Oracle binaries or libraries so we
have to have you put them in
place.

Now, we just link to the Oracle libraries. IF there is a later version (or
earlier version) that has EVERY call
we need to make, the exact same parameters as the ones we expect with the exact
same definition and
same limits and same everything else and the same name for every procedure that
is called, then in theory
everything would work. But, we cannot gaurantee that. We KNOW that we work
against the definition of
the client in 10gR2 as that is what we link and test with. You may get odd and
suprising errors using another
version of the client.

Since you can have this version of the client for any Oracle installation of
10g or later, it is simply safest to
have that specific client installed or best compatibility and least chance of
oddity. BMC supports things
tied to that version of the client and does not gaurantee what may work or not
with any other version of the
client.

Really, this is no different from if you have a 7.6.3 mid-tier, you need 7.6.3
API libraries installed with the
mid-tier. This is regardless of whether the mid-tier is talking with a 7.6.3,
7.5, 6.3, 9.4, or whatever version of
the AR System server.

I hope this helps,

Doug Mueller

Re: Oracle Client Question

2011-01-25 Thread Axton
It has to match the version in the compatability matrix. The Remedy server
uses the native libraries from the oracle client (OCI). The server
dynamically links to these native libraries. If the version/interfaces do
not match, the dynamic linking will not work. Take this ldd (dynamic link
resolver) as a reference:

remedy@x remedy$ ldd /a/b/c/bin/arserverd
/usr/lib/sparcv9/libumem.so
/usr/lib/secure/64/s9_preload.so.1
*libclntsh.so.10.1 =

Dwayne,

I haven't experienced that exact issue, but with something strange like
that I suppose you could try adjusting the field in Dev Studio: maybe
change the radio to display as one line, save it, then change it back to
9 lines and save it again. Maybe also try extending the field width a
little.

Sometimes that has helped me with minor display issues.

Re: Oracle Client Question

2011-01-25 Thread Axton
The linker is going to look for the library by name. In the case of the OCI
api, the name is libclntsh.so.10.1. So if that is not in the path used by
your OS to dynamically link libraries, then it's not going to work. You'll
get a message to the effect that it couldn't find the required libraries.
The 11g client has a different name (probably libclntsh.so.11.1). For this
reason you can not use the 11g client with a 7.5 server. You may be able to
rename libclntsh.so.11.1 to libclntsh.so.10.1, or create a symlink, but if
you run into problems as a result you are going to be out of luck getting
any help; it's untested, undocumented, and no one is going to have the right
information to put it all together, at least not in a way that will do you
any good.

When C code is compiled, you have to pass arguments to the linker. These
arguments drive the linking process and the resulting binary uses the
information collected during linking to know what to look for when executed.

However I would like to be able to take the Subject line value of the

I have read over the Email Admin Guide and also searched BMC Remedy KB

I am a complete newbie for this feature so any pointers are much

There are things that can cause behavior like this that the logs will

Our DBA was monitoring the database during the time and found few
activities in the database. The activities shown in SQL log during the
timeout were all for user AR_ESCALATOR, which means the escalation was
still running during the time. This can also be verified from the
escalation log.

When this occurs, the CPU and RAM utilizations are dramatically dropping
to the lowest levels on both the ARS server and the database server.
There was no application change in the last couple of months. The
problem started about two weeks ago. It could occur 3 times a day and
sometimes it works fine for days without it occurring.

Our configuration/environment:

ARS: 7.1 patch 7

Midtier Server: Windows Server 2003 SP2 (2 CPUs, 2 GB of RAM) - Used
only by customers to submit service request.

Database: Oracle: 10gR2 (remote)

The following are threads settings in ar.conf:

Private-RPC-Socket: 390693 2 4

Private-RPC-Socket: 390698 2 4

We have about 300 concurrent Remedy users during the peak hours.
ARServer is running as non-root process. The number of open file
descriptors for arserverd (~700) was well below the ulimit 3072. The
FAST and LIST threads never reached the maximums.

I have an open ticket with BMC Support but thought I might get a
solution quicker from the Arslist here.
