encrypting a remedy password.

2012-09-26 Thread Frex Popo
Hi everyone ,

Would anyone
who has done something similar and encountered himself having the situation
could give us some hints on how to resolve this issue with minimum effort i.e.
without making any code changes.
We have a
set of Java API programs which connect to an ARS server and create some forms
data. These scripts read a password from a flat file among other stuff (for
easy maintenance so to say). So without making any changes to any of the Java
code, is there an option of encrypting the password which the java could still
read and pass to the API call which established the remedy connection?
There are
two places where I see the password references in every java script.
remedypassword =
prop.getproperty(remedypass);
setpassword(remedypassword);
This by the
way  is a 7.1 server running on a Sun Solaris
5.10 and an Oracle 10.
Any thoughts
would be very much appreciated.

Hi,

If your programs only push data into a table, you can use an
unprivileged user (no group, read license, no password). This is the
best way to handle the password : don't use one. :)
If you need a privileged user then you could use an encryption lib like Base64.

If the PW is going to exist in the flat file in an encrypted fashion, then you
WILL need to make changes to your java code to decrypt it before it is used in
the API. There isn't going to be any way to change the storage of the password

John,

This year you could do more than apologise for not being at the conference,
where the major 3rd party apps are showcased,
even Softwaretoolhouse has made an appearance ( sadly he couldn't make it
this year).

You could, as I tried to convince you a few months back, show up at the
conference(for the first time)!
Let us kick the tires of the product and talk to the developers. Be in the
same room as Misi of RRR and the other developers of apps that add such
great value to the BMC Remedy world.

You still have just under 3 weeks to get to the conference where your
appearance will be welcomed by many,
cost of Booth and transportation is your investment in your business :-)

WWRUG12: Version 8, 3rd party products, 90+ technical sessions. Evening with
Engineering, hundreds of attendees

Re: BMC Analytics For BSM 7604

2012-09-26 Thread Easter, David
Just to clarify, the necessary version of Business Objects is included with BMC
Analytics. The license for Business Objects comes with the entitlement for BMC
Analytics.

You can also choose to purchase the 'premium' version of users to gain
entitlement to the full Enterprise license key necessary to integrate with the
AR System Mid-Tier. The standard BMC Analytics package does not have the
proper entitlement to integrate with the Mid-Tier, but premium does.

Re: FF: What happens to the remedy world on Jan 19, 2038?

2012-09-26 Thread Ron Tavares
If I may jump in here and come back to Venkat’s initial question, as I
believe it is a valid concern. Remember, this is something that would
impact Remedy users much sooner than 2038. If, (for example), I have a
date field that documents a future event, (such as end-of-life on an asset),
It is not inconceivable that I would want to submit a record today, with a
future date of Jan, 20, 2038. So, I have two follow-up questions:

Is this something that is unique to the AR Server environment, or are all
systems that run on epoch time going to run into the same problem.

How *is* BMC going to address this?

AR System stores date/time values as the integer number of seconds since

 00:00:00 GMT, January 1, 1970. Dates from January 1, 1970 through January
 18,

2038 GMT are valid in date/time fields.

Re: FF: What happens to the remedy world on Jan 19, 2038?

2012-09-26 Thread Longwing, LJ CTR MDA/IC
Ron,
The actual answer to the question was likely already providedthat we need
to move from a 32 Bit Integer field to a 64 Bit Integer field. Remedy is by no
means the only system that is dealing with this issue and you are correct, they
need to address it sooner than later, but I think they have somewhere in the
realm of 10-15 years to address this particular problem before it becomes a
serious issue for most people. Mainly because the 'Date' field DOES support
dates beyond this range, and it's not likely that you will need to use a
Date/Time field, which provides you what TIME on that day something needs to
happen, but instead would be able to use a Date field to accomplish something
so far in the future as 2038.

You know roofers and painters give you a discount on their products and
services if you post a sign in your drive way ;)

I’m sure he’s a good honest guy – we’ll just have to find out for ourselves.
Personally wouldn’t touch it until patch 3 or above.

I’d be interested to know the recorded defect rate on all product versions and
patch releases to date and if it starts to fall – now that would be encouraging
that BMC has improved their QA process.

CMDB CI and relationship templates

2012-09-26 Thread Logan, Kelly
Hello all,

I have a question about Atrium CMDB and Asset Management 7.6.4 - I have noted
that there is a functionality called Configuration that lets you record the
financial information for a set of assets and link it to specific CIs, but is
there anything similar that allows you to record standard structural
configurations (CI and relationships)? Or do I need to go to Configuration
Management to get that?

Say I want to create template for all new application servers that includes a
virtual server with 2Mb memory, two network ports, 60 Gb drive resource on a
SAN server, and the relationships between each, is there a place for this?

One thought that does occur to me is that I could set up a 'template' dataset,
put in these configurations as CIs and relationships, and then when I wanted to
create one, have a reconcile job that merges but does not delete the 'template'
CI/relationships.

Has anyone tried this, or is there a better way that's already built in?

Re: MidTier logs

2012-09-26 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
Not knowing what version Mid-Tier and what OS, Web Server, and Java we can only
give general help.

I personally have no problems running ARS and Mid-Tier in a production
environment with all logs enabled. My setup is Tomcat (v5.5) on Linux with
Java (1.5x) running ARS 7.6.04 SP3 (both ARS and Mid-Tier).

For debugging a Web Service you will definitely want at least Cache, Session
Management, Web Services, Qualifications and Expressions, and Servlet checked
in the Mid-Tier Log Settings. I run Log Level=Fine, Viewer=File, and
Format=Detailed Text.

What type of error are they getting. Is it a SOAP Fault/Axis Fault error, or
some HTTP error that may be coming from the web server itself?

one Team works application service by sending text data which internally in
Remedy checks for the data based on the team works input data, if data is
presented in the Remedy application it will update one of record field in

We are getting some failure logs at team works application saying there is
problem at Remedy layer. But we did not find any errors at arerror.log file and
also at armidtier.log.

Please let me know how I can configure the log files at mid tier level. Is this

Re: FF: What happens to the remedy world on Jan 19, 2038?

2012-09-26 Thread patchsk
Actually the limitation is on data/time field only.
If you need to store date/times beyond 2038 before remedy could provide a
fix is split that into two fields(date field, time field). This limitation
does not apply to date only only fields.

Dates from January 1, 1970 through
 January 18,

2038 GMT are valid in date/time fields.

Re: MidTier logs

2012-09-26 Thread Karthik
Use a utility like soapui and try calling the web service and see what
error you get. Alternatively create a dummy filter on remedy itself and
consume the web service to see what is happening.

For debugging you can follow the earlier post by Fred.

I personally have no problems running ARS and Mid-Tier in a production

Java (1.5x) running ARS 7.6.04 SP3 (both ARS and Mid-Tier).

For debugging a Web Service you will definitely want at least Cache,
Session Management, Web Services, Qualifications and Expressions, and
Servlet checked in the Mid-Tier Log Settings. I run Log Level=Fine,
 Viewer=File, and Format=Detailed Text.

What type of error are they getting. Is it a SOAP Fault/Axis Fault error,
or some HTTP error that may be coming from the web server itself?

 Hi All,

I have a web service on Remedy application which used to be called
by one Team works application service by sending text data which internally
in Remedy checks for the data based on the team works input data, if data
is presented in the Remedy application it will update one of record field
in remedy as 'Yes/True' else it use to update 'No/false'

We are getting some failure logs at team works application saying there is
problem at Remedy layer. But we did not find any errors at arerror.log file
 and also at armidtier.log.

Please let me know how I can configure the log files at mid tier level. Is
this Mid Tier log does present any errors caused by web services on Remedy
 application.

Re: [EXTERNAL] Re: New Remedy Release 8.0 - Great feedback about product from one key customer of BMC Software

2012-09-26 Thread Stroud, Natalie K
Don’t get me started on the topic of BMC’s QA process for ITSM, LOL. I do QA
as opposed to development for our Remedy team, and while I do appreciate that
it’s difficult to do QA well (and I think perhaps harder when you have
different server OSes, DB languages, etc. all supported combinations of which
have to play nicely together – we at least have just the one server OS and DB
language to worry about), it’s definitely an area that BMC could stand to
improve. Their testing appears to me to lack thoroughness (i.e. testing all
the different places where a given action can be done – such as creating
relationships between tickets, which can be done in 3 different places I know
of offhand in Incident Management alone), does not appear to look at
consistency of behavior of common fields like the Work Info or Notes fields or
how the same information is presented between modules (in 7.6.04 SP2, try doing
a Prod Cat search for a term that should have multiple matches in both Incident
and Change Management for an example of what I mean), and at times appears not
to include the practice of regression testing.

Does anybody know if they have a dedicated QA team for ITSM? Or do they just
have teams of various people for whom testing is one among many duties? If the
latter is true, it would certainly explain some of the holes I’ve seen in their
product.

Hi,

Even better than 5.1.2 and 6.3?

Are you talking about the Remedy Core AR Server here, or are you referring
to applications as well? Or maybe the client (in this case Mid-Tier)?

Congratulations to the BMC Team on the 8.0 GA!
We participated in BMC's Select Market Availability (early release)
program and has been running 8.0 in production since September 4th.
There are some great new features in 8.0 (redesigned SRM interface, Social
Collaboration, Email Rules Engine, Copy/Paste Workflow elements,
Wiki-style documentation, and many more) that we're really excited about.

We upgraded from ITSM 7.6.00 over the summer and 8.0 has been one of the
most stable releases I can remember in my 12+ years developing Remedy
 applications.
I definitely recommend everyone take a hard look and start planning your
 next upgrade sooner than later.

 Happy about this release.

Are you talking about the Remedy Core AR Server here, or are you referring

It is available, so something is missing for you. You may want to check with
your sales representative and make sure that it’s on your support contract.
EPD will only display products that are available on your contract.

If the
latter is true, it would certainly explain some of the holes I’ve seen in their
product.

Correct.

BMC's interpretation of SOX and other accounting standards required that the
same exact code be released for General Availability that was initially
released to the early access customer(s) since the code was put into
production. Thus we could not further modify 8.0.00 and had to make the
additional hotfixes available in a patch.

What kind of volume of records are you dealing with (both source and target)?
If the data volume has significantly grown between when it was working and now,
then you might want to look at your [Data Key Query] qualification on the Data

Hi,

We have an AIE Exchange Job (Type: from AR Form to flatfile) that was running
before, then suddenly stopped running. We already turned on the Debug logs for
that job but it doesn't give any errors. Instead, after the job starts, it
seems to be stuck at Waiting for next chunk stage and no new logs are written
after that. Then the job just stays on in Running status and never finishes,
but it's not doing anything.

Kali
