Frank it is interesting to me that you would make the distinction
between saying THIS MAN'S WRITING is racist and homophobic and
saying that THIS MAN is racaist and homophobic.

Once on this board I tried to make a similar distinction. I said
that Councilman JK made a typical Cracker response in a newspaper.
When I tried to make the distinction by saying that I wasn't
labeling him as such, just his response, my explanation was not well
received by many on this board.

I suspect that due to your more affable personality as compared to
mine, people will accept the explanation from you. I do, because I
understand the disctinction intellectually, not just because of your
amiable manner.

That being said, I googled this fellow's name and could find nothing
about him.

Can you share with us his writing that you find so offensive so that
we may judge for ourselves?

Is he the one involved in writing those little four or six page
booklets about the Board of Ed I've seen in the past? The ones that
bear the Sonnier household as the place of printing?

I've seen those booklets, and they are quite disturbing. In fact, I
got the whole racist and homophobic feeling after reading them. Is
that his writing?

Maybe this is a distinction without a difference, but what I

No, Tommy, those are not the writings and/or statements I referred to.
The ones you cited were from Brother Joseph Sonnier. The style and

Really Frank? One of your heroes? Which of these 3 Clinton
initiatives was your favorite?

1. The broken promise to gays to desegregate the military by
instead creating don't ask don't tell, also known as keep your
gay self in the closet?

2. The day Clinton's staff greeted a contingent of gay and lesbian
leaders at the white house wearing rubber gloves?

3. Signing the completely anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act?

Please enlighten me Frank. Which of these elevated him to hero
status in your eyes?

(Expecting Frank's post addressing none of these things and going
off topic in 3..2..1...)

Sorry, Toni, but you probably don't know that I was proud to nominate
Marie Castro as a new board member, and she was unanimously chosen.
Marie is an African_American woman, a great lady, and will be a

Frank,

That's wonderful I'm glad she is an African American woman you could
nominate. In my opinion I think there are board members who do not
appreciate
African American women or men if they don't go along with their opinions.

Maybe it would be good to relieve the board of their seats let the state
step in for awhile to focus on the children and not all of the this drama going

Last night I posted the following on the GLBT Asbury Yahoo group.
I hope that the folks here think it is a subject worthy of
discussion.

 Dear Group,
Since I have previously promised to keep the group informed
about
Board of Education matters that affect us all, I have been wrestling
with my conscience since last night's important meeting on just how
to
keep my pledge. I've concluded it is best to deliver the news, very
disturbing news, at least in my opinion.
You will recall that the board needed to fill the seats of
Mrs.
Sonnier and Susan Bisaha, both of whom resigned recently. The
Sonnier
position was filled by Ms. Marie Castro, a part-time professor of
English at Lehman College, part of the CUNY system. Personally, I
could not be happier about that; the children of Asbury Park will
have
a great friend and role model in Marie.
It is the second position, the one left vacant by Susan
Bisaha's
resignation that we should find most disturbing for a number of
reasons.
The man chosen by the board has been the author, in my opinion,
of
some of the most vile rascist AND homophobic literature in our
city.
The greatest irony of it all is that this newly appointed school
board member, Gregory Hopson, Sr., was the very person who had
accused
Susan of despicable, cruel, and most unprofessional acts, all
reckless
allegations which then had to be investigated at great expense to us
and great distress to Susan. Upon thorough investigation by State
offcials, those charges were, of course, found to be completely
groundless. As his reward, he now gets to take the position of the
 woman he unjustly maligned.
How this man came to be chosen may be the most disturbing part
of
last night's meeting, and I've alluded to it in the subject line
above. If there is interest in this group for further details, I
will
supply them to the best of my ability, keeping in mind however that
as
a member of the school board I am bound by board policy, and I do
not
 speak for the board.
Suffice it to say for now that the person who nominated Mr.
Hopson was the Board of Education Vice President Garrett Giberson,
Jr.
I do not think that I am being overly dramatic when I say that our
city and our school board suffered a real setback last night, and
the
truly sad part is that the person most responsible for this
degradation was the vice-president. We had an opportunity to fill
the
vacancy caused by the resignation of Susan Bisaha with another
well-qualified and caring resident of our troubled city. That
gentleman, and I do mean gentleman, was most eloquent in his
responses
during the Board's public interview. The fact that he was passed
over
in favor of one who has sought to divide the city with unrelentingly
ugly and inflamatory rascist, homophobic statements is mind-numbing.
Meanwhile, absolutely none of this helps raise one test score
or
 educates one child.
Score one for the bullies, the rascists, and the homophobes.
Regrettably, this travesty was initiated and made possible by the
board vice-president. I sincerely hope he will explain
why he did what he did.

I don't know this Hopson fellow. You label him racist and
 homophobic. Very serious charges.

Can you lay out the facts that support those labels?

I hope that the folks here think it is a subject worthy of

  Dear Group,
Since I have previously promised to keep the group informed
 about
Board of Education matters that affect us all, I have been
 wrestling
with my conscience since last night's important meeting on just
 how to
keep my pledge. I've concluded it is best to deliver the news,
very
disturbing news, at least in my opinion.
 Bisaha's
resignation that we should find most disturbing for a number of
 reasons.
The man chosen by the board has been the author, in my
 opinion, of
some of the most vile rascist AND homophobic literature in our
 city.
The greatest irony of it all is that this newly appointed school
board member, Gregory Hopson, Sr., was the very person who had
 accused
Susan of despicable, cruel, and most unprofessional acts, all
 reckless
allegations which then had to be investigated at great expense to
 us
and great distress to Susan. Upon thorough investigation by State
offcials, those charges were, of course, found to be completely
groundless. As his reward, he now gets to take the position of the
  woman he unjustly maligned.
How this man came to be chosen may be the most disturbing
 part of
last night's meeting, and I've alluded to it in the subject line
above. If there is interest in this group for further details, I
 will
supply them to the best of my ability, keeping in mind however
 that as
a member of the school board I am bound by board policy, and I do
 not
  speak for the board.
Suffice it to say for now that the person who nominated Mr.
Hopson was the Board of Education Vice President Garrett
Giberson,
The fact that he was passed
 over
in favor of one who has sought to divide the city with
 unrelentingly
ugly and inflamatory rascist, homophobic statements is mind-
 numbing.
Meanwhile, absolutely none of this helps raise one test
score
 or
  educates one child.
Score one for the bullies, the rascists, and the homophobes.
Regrettably, this travesty was initiated and made possible by the
board vice-president. I sincerely hope he will explain
why he did what he did.

Hey Caberetjon, now you are calling this man racist and homophobic.
Do you know him, or are you relying on Frank labeling him that?

I hope Frank sets for the proof of his allegation here. Those
labels are two of the worst things a person can be. I truly want to
see the proof before I call someone that.

N, Justified, I am not calling this man a racist or homophobic,
Frank D'Allessandro POSTED that this man IS a racist and a
homophobic. Since Frank is one of the spokesmen for OUR community, I
assume that he did his homework. (After all, Frank IS a retired

serious allegations; otherwise Frank should be considered a disgrace

ugly and inflamatory rascist, homophobic statements is mind-
 numbing.
Meanwhile, absolutely none of this helps raise one test
 score
  or
   educates one child.
Score one for the bullies, the rascists, and the
homophobes.
Regrettably, this travesty was initiated and made possible by
the
board vice-president. I sincerely hope he will explain
why he did what he did.

N, Justified, I am not calling this man a racist or homophobic,
Frank D'Allessandro POSTED that this man IS a racist and a
homophobic. Since Frank is one of the spokesmen for OUR community, I
assume that he did his homework. (After all, Frank IS a retired
teacher). He must have researched this before he would make such
serious allegations; otherwise Frank should be considered a disgrace
 to our board of education!

Maybe this is a distinction without a difference, but what I have
stated is that the man's extensive rantings were both rascist and
homophobic. Justified then made the logical short leap to state
what I had only implied. His inference then gets repeated over and
over as what was stated explicitly by Justified, but not by me. I
believe in freedom of speech and that includes hate speech. I believe
I've been around long enough to recognize hate speech when I read it
or hear it, whether it's directed at people because of their race,
ethnicity, or sexual orientation. It's just that that I do not
believe that such protected speech should be rewarded with the high
honor, and yes it is a high honor as well as a solemn responsibility,
of being a member of the board of education. I also believe a
person's word is his bond, and that accounts for my characterization
in the subject line of bait and switch betrayal. Unfortunately, I
cannot give an explanation more explicit than that. It is gratifying,
however, that a dialogue, however heated can take place on this
subject. Sunlight, even with its heat, is still the best disinfectant.

As much as I hate to say it, this is one more in a long series of
examples why the state needs to come in and completely take over the
AP school system. No matter how hard good people try to make this
better (you being top of that list) the ridiculous drama and
divisiveness continues. The only ones really losing, every single
 day, are the kids.

I am now convinced we'll never fix this problem ourselves.

Thanks for what you have said and the very kind words. There are
days when I think this is a really bad soap opera with no redeeming
social value, and one in which the kids are afterthoughts, at best.
And I had hoped that State intervention would be something more
valuable than yet another layer of bureacracy. And yet, with many
good people willing to fight to keep this district from backsliding
into one big hotbed of cronyism once again, there are, more often than
people realize, signs of quiet progress. I sincerely believe that our
greatest strength as a district is at the elementary level. There is
more stability there, and we need to build on that. I also see many
students at the secondary level who are very appreciative when they
are given a helping hand and are not treated dismissively. I see
teachers who stay long after the last period ends assisting students.
I don't think we can afford to throw up our hands and walk away. The
people in this town need to demand of their elected officials, whether
the council or the schoolboard: Just what is your agenda? And if
your main concern is furthering your own status in life, diverting
public funds, or persecuting good employees to make room for your
friends, then step aside before you do any more damage than you have
done already. There's real important work that needs to be done, and
it has absolutely nothing to do with your personal agenda.
