How did we get from the names, Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Franklin

If it get's that bad back there, I am subdividing some of the New

Uh. Didn't America need to count the votes in 2000 and not steal them
in Ohio in 2004? Didn't the Party who was installed into power by the
slimmest of margin need to govern in an inclusive way rather that
screaming about a mandate and political capitol, thumbing their noses
at the world and riding roughshod over every tradition, precedent and
facet of the constitution? I think that was basically the problem.

[AsburyPark] Re: Official!

2008-11-05 Thread Jack Pitzer
Oh please.
Yesterday on NPR, I heard a women say something amazing.
She said that she supports Obama, and makes well over $250,000 a year.
She then went on to say that her, and everybody else in her tax bracket, can
more then
afford to pay a little more taxes, and that she's happy to pay a little more if
it means
helping the country as a whole.
And I agree 100%, and I'd do the same thing, happily. I believe in being part
of something
bigger then myself, and being part of a country, not being selfish.
That's not stealing.
In my opinion, one of the problems with America is we are obsessed with me me
me
instead of Us.
Meanwhile, the rest of the world is supporting the Obama election in a very
positive way.
His election will improve our approval ratings, which is important.

Why not try put a little effort in and make $250,000 yourself? Yes it is a lot
of work but it can be done. This is the amount many small business's make and
rather than reinvest in their business to hire more people, they will have to
send any reinvestment money into the black hole.

We always need to be united.
The past 8 years has hurt this country, and the world.
Obama brings the opportunity to bring some excitement and hope about being an
American
 again.
I, for one, am proud to be an American for the first time in a long time. The
 election of
Obama proves to me that we are capable of being a great nation, if we are
 just brave
enough
 to try...

[AsburyPark] Re: Official!

2008-11-05 Thread fancypaaantz
I have to say that last night was such a wonderful night. I had
voted for Obama in the primary and I eagerly cast my vote yesterday
at 6am. When I got home from work, I put on the tv first thing and
cheered as the results came in.

For all that our country has gotten wrong lately, it is incredibly
positive that a man who was not born into wealth and privilege, and
who has dedicated his adult life to public service, can go from the
child of a single-mother to the president of the US. Amazing. And he
did it with the help of regular people, donating $20 here, $10 there.

Then I read the comments that have been flying around on this board
today, and the comments on App.com ,and I am horrified. Racism
galore and insane ignorance. I work in NYC and most of my life I
have lived in or very near NYC. Other than living in Costa Rica
briefly, AP is the farthest I have ever lived from NYC. The point-
some of you in this area are making me very eager to move back!

It is very sad that the day after such a historic day, some of you
have to post reminders that racism is still alive and well.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Official!

2008-11-05 Thread Mike Hemeon
I don't look down on anyone. I grew up dirt poor and know poor as well as
anyone else. I struggled to get an education and get ahead in life. Life is
much easier if you have connections and money it is a cake walk under these
conditions an unfair cake walk. It isn't any easier for a poor white kid that
it is for a poor green kid the rules are the same.

I will say that if you surround yourself with people that tell you you can't
make it when you are young you may start to believe them. If you are smart you
take this negativity and feed on it because it will make you stronger and take
a hard look at the people telling you that you won't make it.

You can either complain and be bitter or pick yourself up and go for it. It is
the American way and unless you have a mental handicap it is possible to
achieve anything you want.
It is by no means easy especially if you aren't already connected and it takes
years and there are so many times you just want to quit and take the easy way
out. You better yourself or remain static in life. Even if you do these things
there is no guarantee but there is the possibility and it is this reason people
want to get into this country so badly.

It is not ridiculous to feel your tax dollars are going into a black hole. Do
you know where your tax dollars go because I sure as hell don't? If you do
something you love try to make money at it. Usually the money follows when you
take that route. BTW I do know you.

Put a little effort in? You don't know anything about me, or what I've chosen
to do for a
living, now do you?
I work my ass off, but honestly, money is not a motivator for me. Sure, it
comes in handy,
but I don't base my life around it. I make a comfortable living, doing 2 jobs,
both which I
love. One is in the internet world, the other doing sound at the Saint, which i
do because I
love it, and not for the money I make doing it.
It's kind've offensive that you say that some of the new taxes are going to go
into a black
hole. That's ridiculous. From what I understand, that money is going to be used
to
improve healthcare, improve our energy independence and responsibility, fix our
broken
education systems and on and on.
I get the feeling that you tend to look down on people less fortunate then
you...

 Oh please.
Yesterday on NPR, I heard a women say something amazing.
She said that she supports Obama, and makes well over $250,000 a year.
She then went on to say that her, and everybody else in her tax bracket, can
 more then
afford to pay a little more taxes, and that she's happy to pay a little more
 if it means
helping the country as a whole.
And I agree 100%, and I'd do the same thing, happily. I believe in being part
 of
something
bigger then myself, and being part of a country, not being selfish.
 That's not stealing.
In my opinion, one of the problems with America is we are obsessed with me
 me me
 instead of Us.
Meanwhile, the rest of the world is supporting the Obama election in a very
 positive
way.
His election will improve our approval ratings, which is important.

Only those in uniform can SALUTE the flag during the playing of the
anthem. Custom (US Flag Code) has it that those out of uniform show
respect and stand facing the flag with the right hand placed over the
heart. That is also the custom for the pledge of allegiance. You are
obviously referring to the photo of Obama from September 2007 at an
Indiana steak and fry where he does not have his hand over his heart
and other candidates do. For the former, the custom (anthem) is not
absolute. And there are more photos of Obama before that photo showing
him with his hand over his heart during the playing of the anthem.

(BTW, flag code specifies that flags cannot be flown at night without
a light or in bad weather. How many times is that violated?).

Get a new tune.

11 officials nabbed in FBI bribery sting

The FBI on Tuesday unveiled an undercover bribery sting in Monmouth
County, rousting three mayors and eight other public officials from
their homes in early-morning raids, clapping handcuffs on them and
charging 10 of them with extortion.

The 10 accepted at least $45,000 plus a free driveway paving job worth
$5,000 in exchange for promises of government contracts, authorities
said. The 11th was charged with money laundering for a profit of more
than $10,000.

The criminal complaints filed by the FBI read like scenes out of the
TV show The Sopranos, in which envelopes of money change hands at
local eateries and conversations contain code words and occasional
profanity. One of the defendants even has a nickname — Joey Buses.

What the public officials — representing six towns and county
government — didn't know is that the FBI was recording them on audio
and videotapes.

At the center of the sting — an extension of Operation Bid Rig, the
FBI's probe into public corruption in the area — was an unnamed
cooperating witness who represented himself to officials as someone
involved in a Florida-based construction business as well as loan
sharking. He was occasionally accompanied by two employees, who were
really undercover law enforcement agents.

U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie called the investigation the tip
of the iceberg and vowed more names would be added to the list of
defendants.

Just when you think that you've seen it all in New Jersey, we peel back

another layer of the onion and see something uglier, Christie said at
a news conference. There is an epidemic in New Jersey of public
corruption. . . . People (are) selling their offices for envelopes of
cash.

The bribery investigation was spearheaded by Edward J. Kahrer,
supervising special agent of the FBI's area office in Tinton Falls,
and three other special agents: William Waldie, Thomas Jobes and
Donald Russ.

This case boils down to greed, ego and arrogance, said Joseph Billy
Jr., special agent-in-charge of the FBI's New Jersey operations.

Billy then quoted Kahrer in describing the impact of the sting: The
corruption in Monmouth County has been like an infection untreated,
which has spread to threaten the health of the entire county. Today,
we have applied the tough medicine. But only constant attention and a
change in the environment will determine if the infection is eradicated.

The defendants are:

John J. Merla, 43, Keyport mayor.

Robert L. Hyer, 63, confidential aide to County Clerk M. Claire French
and a former Keyport borough councilman.

Paul Zambrano, 48, West Long Branch mayor.

Joseph DeLisa, 48, a West Long Branch borough councilman.

Paul Coughlin, 41, Hazlet mayor.

Raymond J. O'Grady, 55, a Middletown township committeeman and head of
the county's central motor pool.

Thomas Broderick, 55, assistant supervisor at the county Division of
Highways, a former Marlboro township councilman and former county
undersheriff.

Patsy Townsend, 57, deputy county fire marshal and code enforcement
and emergency management official in Neptune.

Richard J. Iadanza, 49, Neptune deputy mayor and police commissioner,
and director of the county Division of Highways.

Joseph McCurnin, no age available, operations manager for the county
Division of Transportation.

John J. Hamilton Jr., an Asbury Park city councilman.

All were charged with extortion except for Broderick, who was charged
with laundering tens of thousands of dollars from the unnamed
contractor's loan-shark business. Each faces up to 20 years in
prison and a $250,000 fine.

The accused made their initial appearances Tuesday afternoon in U.S.
District Court in Newark before Magistrate Judge Ronald J. Hedges. All
were released on personal recognizance with the stipulation that they
cannot leave Monmouth County, except for work or case-related travel.
The defendants also had to surrender their passports and firearms.

Several of the men had private attorneys, but some were represented by
the federal Public Defender's Office. Except for Hamilton, who asked
about the penalties for the crime he was accused of, the rest waived
the reading of the charges.

It's not fair, Hamilton said as he left the courthouse, adding that
he believed he was set up.

Most of the attorneys declined to comment.

Eugene M. Lavergne, an Asbury Park lawyer representing Zambrano, said
he had not
