A SENIOR Center and the Board of Ed. Centrally located and
convenient, but who listens to me? I'm just the 800 pound gorilla in
the room! New City Hall, or is the location, too small? New
Recreation Center/Computer Lab/Children's Museum? All purpose Hall,
to attract socials/new Library. Just some suggestions.

Figured this would be a good discussion for everyone. Curious to see
what ideas everyone has for the future of the Metropolitan Hotel site.
Single-family homes, apartments, a new hotel, condos, a mix of some or
all of those, or something else? Consider its location... close to the
beach, close to downtown, adjacent to a park, across the street from
new development, on one of the main gateways to the Asbury Park
waterfront... what would you like to see built on its site?

I like that, too! In San Antonio, across the street from the Alamo,
is Ripley's Believe it or Not! You see some of the gruesome stuff,
that's just in the window! Yeeech! And on the street, was a pink
cadillac reportedly driven by Elvis! Next door to that, was a 50's
type, movie theatre, with an old fashioned 50's Marquee, right
downtown, where public transportation, dropped you off, etc. Didn't
know until I visited, but what we think is the Alamo, is just the
Mission Church, that once stood there. The Alamo, actually consisted
of acres and acres of land, now commercially used in downtown, San
Antonio. That old Mission, stood a mile back from, where the ramparts
of the Alamo once stood, with Cannons at each corner. Don't believe
me? Look it up! I was so proud to see the State Flags of New York,
New Jersey and Louisiana hanging, for every man that served in the
ill-fated fight. There's still graffiti on the walls and huge Bowie
knives, on display in their cases. When I was a kid, with this vivid
imagination, I owned a Davy Crockett hat and a rubber pirates'
knife! I used to use my mother's eyebrow pencil, to draw a mustache
above my lips like Jean LaFitte! Jesus, I was a nut!

I certainly did, in fact I learned all aspects of candy making. I also worked
in the
Eatontown factory, as well as all the other Criterion stores.
My official title with the company was as driver, but when there wasn't any
driving to do
they would send me to help out at whatever location needed me...so sometimes
I'd be at
the Long Branch store, other times at the 2 Asbury stores, then back to the

That job didn't pay much, but for what it was worth it was pretty enjoyable.

the park and draw more people to the area. I'd also like to see the
Delmonte site incorporated if the Met site is indeed used for
community space (I kind of hope when they swing the wrecking ball at
the Metropolitan, the backswing hits the Delmonte and levels it... I
had the honor of having to do some construction work at the Delmonte
a few summers ago, and I have some interesting stories about whats
going on inside that place).

But getting back to the Metropolitan site, the last thing it should
be used for is condos or a hotel. And I dont think anyone is going
to build a hotel there anyway, theres no parking and its not close
enough to the beach to be as profitable as the other hotels.

Its location on Asbury Ave makes it easily accessable for the entire
city and its location across from the park and near the downtown and
beach makes it a good place for community use.

Maybe I wasnt clear. Its not a soup kitchen, church, or privately
owned business. Its owned by the city, rented out by the city, used by
the city and its citizens. People will walk there, ride their bikes
there, and yes drive there, but it will be used by mostly residents of
the city so there isnt going to be much additional traffic from people
not living in the area.

I know, the cost of buying the lot and building it would be too much
for the city to handle. Probably a very unlikely scenario for
something like this to actually wind up happening. But what should go
there and what will go there are probably going to wind up being two
very different things.

And when is traffic a problem on that section of Asbury Avenue?

Actually, you'd be surprised at what a problem we have with traffic from Asbury
Ave.
virtually all the way to the beach, but mostly between Main and Grand.
I've seen people flying down both Asbury Ave. and 1st Ave. doing about 50 mph
many
times, particularly on the weekends. This gets to be an even bigger issue on
Saturdays
when Trinity Church is doing their soup kitchen and there are more pedestrians
in the
neighborhood.

Speeding and traffic mean two different things to me, I misunderstood
what the original post meant.
In regards to the speeding, thats a shame that people speed down Asbury
Avenue in a neighborhood like that with pedestrians, bike lanes, etc.

Actually, more cars and more vehicular traffic could reduce the
speeding problem because more cars mean more people doing the speed
limit and tighter lanes, slowing down the speeders. I know when I
drive on the parkway at night or in mid afternoon and there are barely
any cars, I tend to go much much faster with that wide open road in
front of me (though I probably shouldnt lol).

That being said, nothing on the Met site is really going to be what
causes more traffic. Its going to be the beach and boardwalk.

Thats a badly configured intersection. The fire house easement on the
roadway adds about 75 feet to that backup, more people can make lefts
onto main from the west because of the distance the cars going towards
the west gives them an extra 4 seconds to make that turn. Less cars go
through each time. They need a new light there, or post signs
directing people to drive out of town other ways.

We don't need any more city owned stuff. We want ratables.

What do you think a developer is going to propose for a block long plot
of real estate? Single family homes?

Would you rather have condos built out to the street like Wesley Grove?

An only residents? Do we get id cards now?

The majority of towns have some sort of rec center or community center
for its residents, and it works. And we all have ID cards if there is
doubt, its called a drivers license.

It is a residential block. Duh? Residences or related uses

Hotel and residential are different. Just because someone sleeps in a
building doesnt mean its the same use. A hotel has a restaruant, a bar,
a ballroom.

And its not a residential block, nor has it ever been in any of our
lifetimes... today it houses a church, a boarding house full of sex
offenders, theives, and dead rats in the ceiling tiles; and an
abandoned building serving as the biggest eyesore in the town.

Its a residential area of town... not currently a residential block.
The park is bounded by only about a dozen privately owned homes. And
Asbury Avenue is a main road to the town. If traffic and cars are a
concern to someone then that is a bad street for that person to live
on, period.

century old? Its been there for all of every one of our lives, not
just my twenty-some-odd years on this planet. Whether you are 70,
60, 50, 40, 30 20, 10, or just born yesterday, the buildings on that
block have been there as long as you have been there. If I am
correct, none of those buildings are houses.

I'm not working for MM, and if I was I sure as hell wouldnt be
here
listening to you whine about what is and isnt getting built.

I was not whining. I never did. If I spoke at anytime about what was
or wasn't built it was stating a fact.

 Chill buddy.

Hey, dont start getting personal and implying that me not being the
same age as some of you makes me know less, or that I am out to get
you, or that I work for the big bad developers. I dont take shit from
people like that, so if you think I'm going to let comments like that
go then youre mistaken.

 What hatred?

By bringing up the fact that I am a student and using it in a way
that makes me seem like my comments are useless.

  Learn to relax, its not
  the end of the world.

Agreed. I AM NOT THE ONE WRITING IN CAPS!

I mean the fact that this is an online forum, not a town council
meeting. You dont have to lash out against my idea the way you did,
and take my idea as a means to ruin your neighborhood.

And you got other opinions back. It got a little touchy when you
were
suggesting what should be near some people's and not your homes, or
what we experience and you don't or that we made a mistake, etc,
etc, etc.

I understand now that you live near the site and what is built there
would affect your life every day (I'm still sort of new to this
group, if I had known that you lived in the area of the hotel I would
have understood your comments more the first time I read them).

Listen man, I'm not a developer, builder, or anyone who is going to
threaten your neighborhood, property value, or what you do on a daily
basis. I dont work for anyone who is trying to take your home, so
distance your assumptions that I am some developer working for the
city.

You know, its very easy to say that the best thing for the site would
be a handful of single family homes. And maybe that is whats best,
it probably is. Or maybe its something else. But think outside the
norm for a second, think of every possibile solution, maybe something
not so obvious is the best solution.

you will fail as an architect. Does the word contextual come to mind?

I have no assumptions. Do you work for Madison Marquette? A simple and
honest yes or no will suffice. BTW, I happen to like MM. I just think
it is good to know ehere everyone is coming from.

I said hotel or BB or residential. They are going to build condos
across the street, might as well have them here too. As long as they
are nicely designed. There has to be a buffer/step down from the
higher intense uses on the waterfront.

Dont worry I realize that. I'm not stupid. I mentioned in my intial
post about the surrounding area. My point was that all the homes
have been surrounding the block for 100 years, and the block has been
the way it is for 100 years. It has been that way, with homes
surrounding that block that has no homes, for a very very long time.
Others here suggested offices, retail, a library, a school, a rec
center... if you want to know the honest truth, I really belive it
should be developed into single family homes. But it probably wont,
and I was just trying to throw out a different idea to start a
discussion (and I guess it worked).

No, I actually work full time for an architecture firm in north-
central Jersey, a few miles outside of Newark (and sadly, none of our
projects are based in Asbury Park). I like Madison Marquette as well
and I would like to try to get a chance to work for them for a period
of time in the future.

Let me explain where I'm coming from so I'm not misunderstood from
now on. I am enrolled at a university as an architecture student.
The university has a co-op educational program, which inserts 6-month
internships of paid experince with my studies. I'm currently on one
of those now (and if I could for my next one a year from now I would
like to try to get involved with Asbury Park in some way). Any yes,
I'm in my early 20's... but don't doubt my knowledge of history. I
may not know as much as some of the people in this group, but I've
spent a long time researching Asbury Park's history, heard stories
from family who used to frequent the town, and am following the
development as close as I possibly can. I am a supporter of Asbury
Park, the redevelopment (assuming it benefits the town and
neighboring communities and not just developers, which is debatable
right now), and its history.

I said hotel or BB or residential. They are going to build condos

I think hotel on this site would cause too much of a parking problem.
Dont want a hotel on top of a 2 story garage in this area either.

I think that Asbury lacks office space big time. A well designed office
building could go a
long way as far as feeding some of the restaurants and other business's on
Cookman that
flounder during the day. I also still think that a Trader Joes would be a great
idea. At this
point in time, I really can't see there being the need or market for more
housing. Maybe if
the real estate market was sound I'd be thinking that some form of housing
would be great
at that location, but predictions are showing at least another dismal and scary
year ahead for
the housing market. I think it's time to think way outside that box.
