I personally find Braille music fantastic for complex music or just to understand what is going on. Granted in the real scheme of things, Braille is only a small tool in ones approach in conquering a massive part.I will memorize the music off the page, listen to a recording, sing along with the recording, get a piano track, sing along with that, then go to the live pianist.Or alternate recording with piano track it doesnt matter. But Braille music is for error detection mostly. But Braille music is very error prone. I still use it daily and could not think where I would be without it despite that though.

Hi all! Personally, Ive used both methods eather for writting/reading Braille music, or listening and memorizing and this is my personal preferred choice. Now Midi can help you a lot in composing your music, in my opinion; its universally known and each piece you write in it can be listened from other that maybe hasnt your keyboard or your sound card.From my experience, Braille isnt that universal, is it?it is certainly a very great method because its concise, speaking of notes and theyr length but, personally, I dont find its utility in complex pieces or parts. Now Im really liking Lilypond, also for learning music. Its a language for printing music from a pc but its perfectly usable also from blind people. These are just my ideas, nothing special, really!

Interesting, I always expected Tank Commander to be the next multiplayer game if any such game were to be developed. Making Shades multiplayer doesnt seem to fit with the nature of the game as well, although it looks like itll be an entirely different game. And I will admit that these feelings are entirely personal, I definitely would very much consider paying for a multi-player version.I think the disappointment is justified but that now we should just all move on. Besides, Robjoy explained it better than I probably ever could, also fair points about VB6 and such being highly out of date. So we probably should stop repeating ourselves and wait until someone can bring something new to the table.

The third door on 1dash1 does not open.The boxes on 24dash 3 need the numbers of the note you get from a previous stage. Either from the box of 23dash4, or 21dash4. I cant remember.But, the note will have 5 numbers on it.Thats all Im saying.

I agree that Tank Commander would work far better online than SOD. Then again, I rarely enjoy competative online games since I have very little time to play them and usually get owned by people who do nothing else but get extremely good and then dont stop telling you how much you suck.On another point, is it worth paying for the current version of the game or waiting until the beta is completely worked? Im not getting errors so far in the version Ive downloaded but Id rather have the most up-to-date and best-worked code.

Well frastlin, to be honest if Im going to memorize music it is just easier to do so on my own. Indeed, though i can! translate notes in my brain into note valus, bars etc and have had to do this to pass exams, and it is of course necessary to understand some theory to communicate with other musicians, for learning I I prefer to just work by the synaesthesic impression of the melody. Even for complex peaces I dont find this difficult, indeed one advantage Ive noticed is that sinse I am always going off the sound of the melody line and what other people are doing, I can always hear how my part interacts with others or with the accompanyment, even for modern Atonal stuff such as Vaughn Williams blake songs. Generally the way I work is just to get my singing teach to play a melody line and speak me words onto a cd, and then listen to it. On average it takes me around twenty minutes to half an hour t
 o learn something in English or Italian (why I have been having Italian lessons), longer if it is in german or is particularly irregular. Of course, it takes practice like anything else, and I freely admit for me sinse my method of learning instrumental peaces was always to sing it first, learning vocal stuff hasnt been that hard.I have no problem with people using braille music, however I do know over here the Rnib have a habbit of brain washing people into thinking its the only way of doing things and that youll fail without, indeed I have been told as much, and yet the alternative is quite doable and in my own opinion far easier, as well as of course being less expensive and trouble, (I am currently learning an Offenbach opera for Aims Summer school in August, and god knows! where Id get the music in braille, heck the director has had to hand out copies of the print music sinse it is not availabla anywhere! there arent 
 any recordings either which is a pest so Its just down to my ability to learn from my singing teachers playing).

Well Camochek, as far as I know I dont believe there have been any games using the cerilic alphabet, indeed even when Ive heard of russian or Israily developers making games (such as the people from Vip gameszone), the games are in English and as far as I know written in the latin alphabet. I believe Russian and other cerilic languages do have latin spellings and variations anyway which is probably what would be used in games.As to sapi, well if it were a cerilic game odds are itd be the Russian regional varient of the sapi voice which would understand cerilic anyway, if it is in an English game, then well you might have a problem sinse the English regional sapi would probably mangel pronunciation of cerilic names, although again I cant think of that many games that output the text in russian, Georgian etc, other than some of the language packs for things like top speed.

Interesting about the multiplayer. I confess multiplayer is less my thing sinse I tend to prefer exploring and single player plot than competing against others, for all Id probably give it a try, btw, this is why i liked swamp sinse it was possible to effectively play as a single player game. I actually also agree with Arjan that Gma tank commander would probably work more effectively in terms of setting as a multiplayer game, sinse I did always like the impression of being one lone surviver stuck in a very dark and hostile place shades gave, which would not be the same in a frantic, multiplayer melee, then again i freely admit Im more a single player sort of bod anyway.The major things i was hoping for in the update were more plot sequences and objects to play with, sinse some of those levels are pretty empty (especially compared to Sarah), and more variety in enemies, sinse I always found myself getting a bit tir
 ed of seeing the same mutants and cyborgs again by level 5 or 6 so, extra background ambience and a bit of variety in setting wouldve been nice too. Actual extra levels, or some sort of map designer might have been fun, though I was not entirely holding out for this. Regarding buying the upgrade, as I said though i do feel disappointed Im personally happy to support Gma to the tune of 5 usd, especially because more is obviously on the way, and I look forward to hearing the new sounds. I would also be a little concerned that if too many people didnt show an interest in the upgrade we may not see more work on Shades in the future.That being said I may contact David once I have bought he upgrade and express some of these concerns.However, as Arjan said perhaps its now time to move on.

hi guys. just thought id thorw in some stuff here.firstly, not being funny here, but if you dont want to buy the upgrade, .. then dont? stop having a go at somebody for doing work, and then selling that work. if you already have version 1.2, or what ever, and are happy with that, then thats fine. i how ever, did buy the game. no, not an upgrade, as i never even had version 1.2. lol. so i spent the 20 US dollars to grab it while i could, in stead of buying it at a higher price. i take every chance i can to get games on cheap. wether that be 5 bucks for an upgrade, or 20 bucks for a full purchase. so from the point of view of the people who have version 1.2 and dont like the fact that this new / remade version, costs money, i can see where you are coming from. but think about it in these terms. what about the hundreds of people, who were perhaps young children at the time version 1.2 came out, and yes, its really been that long, might now bu
 y version 2 outright if they never had version 1.2. so from that point of view, this move makes sense, as there is potentially a hole new gaming generation out there, that have never had shades of doom, and want it, specially for newer operating systems.now, on with a couple things beta wise.firstly, ive only played levels 1, and part of level 2 in this new version. how ever, i noticed that there is a problem when going in the elevator, from level 1 to 2. the game freezes up, for quite a while, before unlocking and dropping you suddenly on level 2. and by quite a while, i mean around 20 seconds. now, if i were on a slower computer, this might be expected. however, i am not. i am on a core i7 quad core running at 2.4 ghz, with turbo up to 3.4, and 8 gb of ram. so i dont see why this is happening. but it bares looking into.it appears to go into a not responding state while its locked up, then resumes normal functionality once it sorts itself out.sounds:i must agree with several people here. i really dont like the new EVA voice. its to put it bluntly, horrible. please, david, go to a better voice.as is the menu voice. speaking from the experience of knowing a couple people with hearing problems, the new voices are horrible, and hard to hear. even for me, at nearly perfect hearing levels still.I also, noticed the monster sounds are kinda quiet, and there seems to be very little difference in volume, from being 50 feet away, and 0 feet away. its hard to tell if the monster is a long way away from me, or about to beat my brains in.as is the sounds for objects to pick up. they also seem to be a bit hard to tell distance with.music:now this is where its lagging. yeah, it brings back memories of version 1.2, but really, we need newer music, at better quality, and a totally different sound. we need music that gets your blood pumping, and ready to take on the world. 
 not this boring kind of droning sound. this is one area we could see a lot of improvement. either some kind of trance like, electronic like music, or some rock of some type.looking forward to see what else comes to this new version. hopefully, we havent seen everything yet.dallas

I think Id have liked maybe another level or 2, or a reworking of the existing ones, because some of the maps are really familiar. There are certain monsters in certain places which it all came flooding back to fight in a certain way. I suppose there are no new monsters after the temporal disturbance so all you get for the last half of the game is just bigger guns facing you. Maybe a new monster later on would be good but I think that the ranged abilities of the monsters at that stage are enough of a challenge for me.I wholeheartedly agree that it would be good to be able to interact with the environment a bit more though. So few of the pieces of ambient equipment do anything and that seems a shame.

Kamochek, Microsoft Sapi is Unicode so it doesnt matter weather the developer uses the Latin alphabet or the Cyrillic alphabet. The Speak function will take either one. So this is a case of you making a big deal out of something that is no big deal in the scheme of things. The important thing is if the developer knows the language being used regardless if it is Hebrew, Russian, etc. Most developers are not multilingual so English is used because it is the language most people use and is understood by most of the VI community.

SLJ, both of your questions can be answered together. Lists show you all of your units of a certain type. If I have 17 armoured units split between 3 cities and placed on sentry on my land, I will forget where they are. By looking at the list of armoured units I can read down all of the armoured units and it reminds me of their coordinates and whether they are damaged and on sentry. You can use shift with down arrow in the lists to highlight groups of units then wake them up or send a whole group to a certain place or attack an enemy or whatever. This is quicker and it means the game will sort them out in the best order to move them rather than when you move them manually and it either takes a long time or they get in each others way.Lists are also how I find out what units I have on sentry. I always leave some units awake, especially important or powerful ones, so that the game doesnt march for many turns when the enemy is close by. Using the lists you can arro
 w up and down to remind yourself of all the units you have, where thy are and to wake up the ones on sentry. I think lists show enemy units of that type as well although you should be careful because the enemy may have moved and not still be where the list thinks they are because it takes its information from the last time your units saw the enemy.You can win the game by really quickly making infantry and sending them wandering across the map to conquer all of the cities. This only works on a land map though since there will not be any water to slow them down. If you have to take the time to build ships, the enemy will probably be ready for you when you get there. I prefer to play TOC as a long game though since just running over and making lots of infantry isnt really a challenge and doesnt really need much skill, especially on the small maps. I imagine land battles on the very big map are absolutely crazy. If playing long land battles, some of the things the eng
 ineers can do are great fun.

I have to disagree on the music. While the music could definitely see some improvement I definitely would not want to see rock/electronic because it doesnt fit with the atmosphere. Being alone in a lab full of potentially dangerous things requires more of a drone sound, which is kind of what we have now although the quality is a little disappointing. So something similar but better would is something Id prefer to see. Besides, in real life if youre alone and have no idea what youre facing you probably want something that enables you to hear any unusual activity rather than loud music that allows you to be attacked without even hearing it..

@Bryan, I agree on that, it was shades of doom that actually convinced me audiogames were worth playing and not just something simple made for the poor denuded blindies. As to new versions and money Keba, I for one never said the new version shouldnt happen and david shouldnt charge, only that I was disappointed with the lack of upgrades as compared to 1.2. If youve not played the previous version, that doesnt change the fact that shades is itself a completely awsome game, a fact that nothing can change. Its an absolute classic everyone whos a fan of audiogames should play at some point, indeed its Shades very cult status that is likely the reason for the negativity and the hopes for more of it from gamers who already know the original game backwards.@Welshweyer, in terms of monsters, I wouldnt disagree that the current challenge of the game isnt fine, however I do think a great
 er variety in monsters would break things up a little more. For example, instead of gun wielding mutants as the primary ranged attackers, how about acid spitting lizards? creatures firing poinoned spines? How about a giant scorpian style enemy with weak armour but a medium ranged sting attack. How about some creatures with attacks to slow or effect the player, like say a  mutant plant with grasping tendrils that held the player still while other nasties homed in? How about some floor hazards like pools of acid or molten metal that damaged the player, or some slippery floor tiles that altered the players movement speed.All of these would be possible judging by what weve seen in Sarah, and would create more variety and tactics required in the game by changing the situation, also meaning that the player was more frequently presented with new enemies rather than the same old ones, albeit in more challenging positio
 ns. @keba, regarding the music, while I agree some more music might have been nice, especially different music for different stages of the game, at the same time I dont like the idea of high action, rock type stuff. Part of what always attracted me to shades was the horror atmosphere. The fact that the first few times you play the game you dont know when something nasty is going to creep up on you, emphasised by the gorey death sounds, and the survival horror theme of the game. While Id personally like more music, Id much prefer it to stay within this survival horror theme and not turn the game into a monster slaughter action fest, sinse after all we have other games for that. The original shades music was quite okay for this imho, however after a while it does become more monotonous than creepy.

@Welshweyr, I think I accidently altered the turn setting in options and now dont know how to get it back to how it was n Toc1.0, sinse it seems turns are happening different to how I expected. I agree the lists are amazing, indeed the way David has created the contextual information in the game is fantastic and means that even someone like myself who isnt the best at working out large and complex maps from limited audio information can play the game. successfuly by just looking at the lists and working on distances.

I cant say I got that far in zoark, however I think This illustrates my point quite well. I doubt Id have used put string in brick either sinse to me putting something in! something means inside of. If however this were a puzzle with the generic use command it wouldnt be hard at all, use string with brick. burn string is not a command Id have chosen either, sinse light string would seem to be the more correct english term when talking about  dynamite. i agree having the correct verb in description as some muds do is also a good idea.

I find it interesting Camochek that you so much enjoy the inquisitor, a game where the developers have had! to charge an unusualy large amount of money to cover the costs of voice acting in three different languages and writing three entire dubs for the game, which is why the games are a little more expensive than expected, sinse effectively if the developers made those games free they would not be able to pay for all of those things.Captain dynamite will certainly be a commercial game, and given the quality of the voice acting in the previous demo, not to mention development tools for three different platforms and goodness knows what other technical expenses I think its quite understandable why.

I wasnt aware Unicode cover cerilic as well sinse I do know there need to be major changes to computer regional settings to handle some alphabets like Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese, one reason why Ive never fancied the Japanese games thing sinse I dont want to start playing around with my computers regional or keyboard settings and the process always seems rather involved. Interesting that Cerilic languages dont have the same problem.

Hi roro, actually, Im a member of that group and have downloaded tiflo-juegos to my wuala drive. I am constantly adding new stuff to the folder. I just thought I should get it out now since I have more than enough opertunities to get new stuff in it after Ive set it up. But I will be adding stuff shortly, so there will be a lot more than now. The advantage to using this over publishing a zip as Seby suggested doing, is that you dont need to keep publishing and republishing it. When the old abandonware games archive that Ray and Harrison had up in a similar thread, youd have to keep downloading the zip. This should eliminate that.

On a map with lots of meadows like CAN3, it was excrutiatingly slow, but on JS12, the lag was low to not noticeable with roughly similar amount of units involved.

Hi.Ok, so seeing as I am new to Bittorrent sync, I have some questions.I downloaded the mac application and am really happy to see that it works with VoiceOver.So, on to the questions.When I set up the client, I entered the code I found on this forum topic.Now, Ive got a progress indicator that is ticking away and says something about 1 kb/up and 2. something mb/down.Is this the downloading of the folder?I think so since the sync folder in my home folder is getting bigger.So, do I keep the client open until its done downloading?Will this folder stay up forever or does it go offline if the person hosting it shuts down the computer hosting the folder?Sorry for the questions, but I am new to bit torrent sync.

I agree completely with Dark. I wanted to try and learn braille music, but gave up and just now use ABC notation, which is a text-based notation.I do a lot of listening before I mess around with any music. If I can get the idea of how it should sound in my head before I fumble around with notation, it works a lot better.Whistling or lilting music youre trying to learn can also be a big help in the memorization process.

I usually just use separaters between letters to indicate the rhythm, if I really need to write music in plaintext. ABC, A B C, A, B, C, A-B-C, etc. It isnt really standardized since I usually just do this when Im out then either forget about it or convert it to NWC the first chance I get.Theres also the music formatting used in BGTs soundtrack object, but its probably awful for reading since its optimized for creating music programmatically.If I were to recreate braille music from scratch, Id probably go with something similar to what we already have, except less needlessly obfuscated and more print-music-shaped. But my tendency to try and cram as much data into the smallest space possible would probably make it look about as ridiculous as d-j notation.

The applications should stay in the background, so you shouldnt need to have the window open all the time. The archive will stay up as long as Carlos wants it to. Since it is maintained by all of the people on the folder, it doesnt go down unless all of them do, and since it is stored locally, it cant be taken away from you. Frankly Camochek I dont actually think you understand this particularly well, either in terms of quality of acting, of getting sounds for games, or in terms of game development, heck if you dont understand Bgt but expect to learn on your own with no teaching I dont really see how you expect developers whove learnt much more complex programming languages and often paid fees to universities for that knolidge to just automatically give their work away for nothing. Its true some do, but this is a kindness, not a requirement.Your like someone who walks into a restaurant and says can I have a free meal? Actually, two things here.1. Yes, the SAPI engine is Unicode, but many of the things that send text to it are not. I know there was trouble getting non-Unicode text to work in BGT, and this could cause problems. By the way, Vietnamese, unlike most other Asian languages, already uses the Latin alphabet (a legacy from French occupation).2. The latinization of other languages is not a very feasible system. For example, there are three Arabic letters that are sort of similar to the letter H, but are distinct in Arabic. I would prefer making various technologies Unicode-based rather than trying to limit natural languages to obsolete restrictions from an earlier computer landscape.

Id use S3 so theres plenty of bandwidth that costs almost nothing, and I could look into an indexer to make browsing easier in addition to a large archive; furthermore, and ironically, BitTorrent would also be supported. I think that SOD is a very pure audio experience, in the sense that there is no ambiguous sound representation, and the game is designed as such for the player to be on fair terms throughout. In other words, SOD emphasises funness over reality. This I think is what people find so charming about it, and I agree.But how this would work in a multiplayer mode, I dont know. From Davids notes, it seems hes just as fastidious about that as his single-player mode, and notwithstanding any effect multiplayer would have on the general atmosphere of the game world (which, again, contributes substantially to its charm) it seems likely that the game would be very different to any of the existing FPSs we can play.Now I think about it, I probably havent thought this through very well, because my idea of multiplayer SOD was essentially that of turning everybody into silent walkers, but realising as I do now that this would actually make for a fairly dull and c
 hallenging experience, I can see how Davids ideas do make more sense. Although, if it were me, Id work on removing the limitation on eight players.

a talking dos box emulator would just be perfect! because, as far as I know, none of the high-rez adventures by sierra online were converted to z-coad. ironic since the graphics were just there for decoration, according to ken Williams who was the programmer and company CEO. at least they would be slightly easier to port to zcoad than the agi games, which were more graphical but used a similar parser to the infocom games, which is why I was thinking of an accessible AGI interpreter. (it was actually a friends Idea, since she wanted to make a talking game engine recreation of the dos port of an old computer game called heroes of the lance;you may know the horrible nes version)since we now have a self voicing version of shadogate (based on the superior nes version rather than the mac original), I was wondering also if anyone had the balls to port the other mac venture games over to Ians AGE engine, which is the audio equivalent of the AGI engine

Go into Settings on iOS or Preferences on OS X, and remove or turn off the unwanted calendars. Its usually a checkbox in your account settings.

thanks for the working link! finally can try out monolog97! (if you dont know what that is, it was an old text to speech program made by first bite. they closed their doors in 2001, but it used to be one of 2 speech synthesisers that would come with a sound card;the other, of course, being text assist).

Something else Ive been thinking about: is it possibal to add a way to here the last three or four items picked up? for example, if your looting on a map such as sub3 that has a lot of zombies and they are all behind you and you pick up a weapon. you know it sounded like an asault rifle, but you dont know what weapon it was because you turned or did something else that interupts speech. My idea is to maybe assign a key that if you press it, say 3 times quickly you will here the third to last item picked up, two times for the second to last item, etc. This can also apply to broken items also. say this scenario: if you are on a mission and you get hit real bad, but when you were getting hit you heard something break. Usually, when you get hit that bad the first thing you want to do is check your health and heal ASAP, but in my case, I also want to know what broke. I could scroll back and check what broke, but doing that is diffacult because you are running around, steari
 ng, and trying to scroll back thrue messages all at the same time. I was thinking of the same idea for hearing the last few items picked up to hear the last items that broke.

The left and right bracket keys already do this. Ive long said that the messages they log should exclude certain things, like terrain announcements or zone names, but they do already track the sort of thing you are talking about. Theres also a bug where you are always stuck way back in the list instead of being moved to the top like you are with radio messages. So, it isnt perfect, but what you are suggesting does already exist.

Hi.First off I really really hope Ive just not wasted about 200 pounds on these voices.I bought the voices cause I thought they sounded great, Ive got British, the new Indian voice, the Australian voices and the kestilian Spanish ones.My problem is when i run sapi five with nvda, I get the cannot load symth error. Ive tried repairing it but no luck.Can anyone help?Im running a 64 bit version of windows eight.Thanks,Brad

Or, if you want to go the dropbox route, Id suggest registering a domain and then forwarding it to the url of your index page. There are free short sub-domain services out there such as .usa.cc, .co.nr etc, where you can register domains and forward them. Also, theres a free top-level domain called dot.tk where you can do the same thing, though it requires a captcha to be filled out.Another good webhost, though probably not as good as free hosting no ads, is 0fees.net. It also includes other stuff like what weapon was equipped, hp, and just about everything else minus the chat. I would not post about this if a few more things were excluded.
