Re: Help with ps 4 controller

Back and forward in fighting games is always subjective to which way you are facing. In 2d and 2.5d fighting games, and i guess in most 3d fighting games as well, these are the left and right arrows, or directions on an arcade stick, no matter emwhere you play. If left makes you walk back, and right makes you walk forward, then left is back and right is forward. If you are on the other side of the screen, then the opposite is true. This is why fighting games use back and forward, rather than left and right, because back and forward can be universally applied without the need to write down the instructions a second time for the opposite direction. This is true whatever you play on, from ps4 to gamegear to n64 to pc or whatever.

Re: Kenshira Plays: Audio playthroughs and demos of mainstream games

Hey, everyone! Its a new week, which means that its time for a new game! Today, I'm trying to fight my way through the king of fighters 97.Its been a busy last few days, with hardly a second to rest between an uninterrupted recording session and editting, but i finally have a few minutes to myself, so i present you with my best attempt at King Of Fighters 97. First of all, I was a capcom kid growing up, and probably the only snk game I played during their prime in the 90s was samurai shodown on the snes. Thus, I didnt get to play any of the king of fighters games until someone gave me a copy of kof99 on the sega dreamcast, and man did the game's boss give me a headache! My experience with the series after that was relegated to the ex spin-offs that came out for the gameboy advance in the early 2000s and kof 2002 and 2003 on the xbox. It was not until much later when I got the king of fighters collection for the psp did I get to play any of the games before 99, and it was really something special to see how the games evolved with each new entry before snk fell and was revived by playmore. Another deckade later, and people ar still playing those old games from over 20 years ago online with each other. This is a testament to the quality of the games, that it has withstood the test of time all these years later, with kof 97 and 98 being the best in the series that decade has to offer. Today, you can still purchase kof 97 on the pc and ps4, who's version is cross buy and cross play with the vita version. You can still find people to play against online, and the game uses rollback net code. At first I was hesitant to get this game because I already had it in the collection. However, i did not know that you could play in single matches until i watched someone do just that. When I finally bought the game and saw that it had more than one single player mode, online play, its own set of unlockables and a trophy list, i did not regret my purchase, and now kof 97 is one of the games i fire up frequently when i have a few minutes to kill. It doesn't have a training mode, but that doesn't bother me because you can train in all of the games within kof collection. If that one interests you as well, you can buy it on the ps4, and i heard that that version lets you switch between the neo geo and arranged soundtracks. In the demo below, ull give myself 3 credits to make it as far as i can in single matches within kof97, with aiori as my character of choice. How far will I get?Click here to find out!I hope you guys enjoy this week's game. This week also marks a significant milestone  since we now have over 3 hours of audio mainstreaming demo content, so if you're new to the Kenshira plays thread, feel free to go and check out those prior recordings, which should be up. That's it for this week. Tune in again next week, when we'll be stepping away from the violence once more. Until next time!

Re: pokemon crystal clear, an open world pokemon crystal rom hack

Hey guys, bringing this thread  back because pokemon crystal clear just got updated to version 2.1, which adds and fixes a bunch of things. I'm not going to link the game for obvious reasons. I have had a lookes at the change Log and probably the biggest change is the ability to choose your starting town as well as region. You can even move your home later on as well as find new locations for it not immediately available at the start. Besides that, there are a ton of new additions like music, sidequests, too many for my poor finger to tap out on this touch screen.A couple things worth noting: the character editor when starting a new game is a pain in the rear but if you can figure that out then the rest is pretty straight forward. Also, footstep sounds are broken again so its not 2984 anymore unless I had it wrong to start with. If anyone can figure what to change the footstep ram number to, please share. You can still use the camera and path finder though, and everything else should be as it was. Finally, you can still use your save from the old version, just save inside olivine pokemon center, then switch out the old game with the latest version, then go outside and talk to the sign for confirmation. A beep means success, and if your warped back inside then it means the game needs to be update. I just started over but still have my old save.

Re: Kenshira Plays: Audio playthroughs and demos of mainstream games

Hi, everyone! Its a new week, which means its time for a new game! This week, I'm banging my head through some of Guilty Gear Judgement on the psp.Since we were talking about how lacking fighting games were in audiogames last week, and how audio fighting games tend to be just vop it style reaction affairs, i thought it was finally time to semo how a mainstream fighter really plays. Eventually, I will demo a fighter with stereo combat sounds, but today is not that day. Still, this is a very playable game, with adjustable options such as difficulty, sounds, music, voices, buttons etc. The game has sounds and/or commentary for everything from blocks to recoveries to dashing to different finishers. Lets take a look at the game then, and what it has to offer.Guilty Gear Judgement is a 2 game compilation that was released physically and digitally for the psp in the late 2000s. The game contains Guilty Gear Judgement, which is a lengthy 2d side-scrolling brawler with several modes of play, cooperative play, tons of unlockable characters, and a lengthy story for each character. The second game in the compilation is Guilty Gear XX reloaded, which is a 1 on 1, 2d fighter with over 20 unique characters, and several gameplay modes, with Guilty Gear Judgement acting as the story mode to replace the one missing in this version of XX. The Guilty Gear series of games is heavily inspired by heavy metal music, so both games have a smashing  soundtrack that rocks harder than any of the music  from capcom or snk games combined! If the music isn't your thing, you can turn it down, or disable it entirely, and the same is true of the voices and sound, with each having 150 levels of volume. For this demo, I tried to adjust it so that the music isn't intrusive and the action can be heard clearly.Although Guilty Gear games have been around since the late 90s, I did not get exposed to the series until I got Guilty Gear Dust Striker for the Nintendo DS. Although that was by no means a horrible game, I wasn't too impressed with the 2 on 2, item heavy combat. However, when I picked up Judgement, I was absolutely in love with the gameplay, and was sorry I had not known about the main games sooner. Everyone knows about the fighters from developers like Capcom, SNK, Namco and Midway, but up until recently, the dev and publisher behind the guilty Gear franchise, and the games that came after it had remained relatively obscure. I only found out about them from hours of gaming research on my free time at the college library when I had no work left to tend to.The game came out at such a perfect time for me, because i was just getting into Japanese rock bands like Asian Kung-fu Generation and I even had a 2 gb memory stick full of their stuff. Thus, the guilty gear soundtrack fitted perfectly with the music I was into at the time. The devs probably knew that people would want to enjoy the music outside of gameplay, so they included that a ility in the sound options for each game, and if you press square on a track, the game will automatically switch to the next track once that one was done. I loved that each track did not loop endlessly like other games, and that every track is its own song with a beginning and an end.Eventually, I bought a digital copy of the game from psn so my brother and I could play cooperatively, and boy did that reduce the load times! Even going back to these games so many Years later, i still found them incredibly enjoyable, so much so that i kept playing long after the recording and editing process. Unfortunately, Guilty Gear Judgement has long since been removed from the psn, but i still recommend playing it however you can. The game is mostly voiced in japanese, but the story text in Guilty Gear Judgement does not auto scroll, so you can use a third party application to read it. Additionally, there are cheat codes to restore your lives, health and special to help you along your way through Judgement that you can look up. Finally, if you still wish to purchase a similar game in the series, you can still find other guilty gear games on the psn, including xx accent core plus for the psp, xx accent core plus r for the vita, and guilty gear sign and guilty gear revolater and its sequel for both ps3 and ps4, along with many other related content, even the original game from 1998. I may cover another game in the series in the future, we'll see..In the audio demo below, I will fight my way through guilty gear xx reloaded as far as I can without dying with Sol Badguy, then I will do the same for guilty gear judgement.

Additionally, there are cheat codes to restore your lives, health and special to help you along your way through Judgement tthat you can look up. Finally, if you still wish to purchase a similar game in the series, you can still find other guilty gear games on the psn, including xx accent core plus for the psp, xx accent core plus r for the vita, and guilty gear sign and guilty gear revolater and its sequel for both ps3 and ps4, along with many other related content, even the original game from 1998. if a longer narrative was done in place of having several side quests, I can understand the design decission. If I had to choose one or the other, I'm not sure what I'd pick  on the one hand, a lengthy story will take more time to work through, yet on the other hand, side quests would increase the game's replay value.

I wish there was something similar to where you could press a button in town and easily pick which area you want to go to. I also don't have a way toread the starting menus and the like.

Re: Blind Quest 2 - The Frost Demon Now Available

Well, if this gets released on android, I will at the least add it to my wishlist and purchase it if nothing else takes priority and I have money to spare. I am interested to know what happens next.I think that voice acting is fine for narration, but given how disjointed the menu instructions were, it might just be better to use a voice synthesizer for that portion, similarly to how a blind legend did. As for padding out the gameplay for more playtime, adding more optional side quests and more characters with interesting story arcs would help. Adding additional optional challenges such as a maze or similar puzzle that rewards you with a weapon advantage, or some kind of opgional tournament to do on the side would help. Adding discoverable achievements and collectibles would also help. These were all things that I feel could have been added or expanded on within the first game without sacrificing the simplicity of the gameplay. What might also help is a jesture to see how many potions you have left, or some kind of stat tracker where you could get an idea of how much damage you deal,, how much defense you have, and how far you have towards the next level. Although the leveling system did make this feel like an rpg, I have to confess that another appeal of the genre for me is watching the numbers grow as I make progress, and that was largely lacking in the first game. Finally, leveling also felt less impactfyl because my skillset never increased as I grew stronger, which is what made combat repetitive. Even in the lone wolf books, you gained more skills to use in and out of combat as you progressed through each book. I think that new skills could be assigned to quick directional button inputs, or multidirectional swipes of increasing length depending on the difficulty of the learned skills.

Re: crazy party beta 74 is underway

So why is it ok for shades of doom to be an audio doom, and for manamon to be an audio pokemon, but not for crazy party to be an audio mario party? Is it simply because of the music and sound? May I point you to the case between data east and capcom, where capcom tried to due data east for creating fighters history, claiming that it was a knockoff of street fighter 2? If you play the arcade version of fighters history, and the snes version of street fighter 2, and heck even eternal champion on genesis and sega cd, you will notice that they all have some of the same attack and impact sounds, and all of these were commercial games.Back to the case between capcom and data east, the court ruled that capcom didn't have a case against data east because you can't copyrite a genre, and characters from both sides were drawn from inspirations and stereotypes. I know I like to knock manamon for being a pokemon knockoff, but I gotta give the guy credit for filling in a needed for audumiogames. I feel the same way about crazy party.

Thats why I said that if this game didn't contain sounds from other games, no one would bat an eye, because quite frankly, no other audiogame of this type exists. Swamp has its piers, scrolling battle has its piers, but not cp. As much as i want to call this a Mario party knockoff, there are some design choices that make the game its own thing, and even if there weren't, there is literally no other audiogame quite like this. To say that what shades of doom did was OK but in the same breath knock cp is in itself hypocritical, because that gane used its name branding and game design to sell itself, just as crazy party does, except no one is making money off of crazy party. You could argue that shades of doom didn't take sounds from its source of inspiration,, vut this is still just a beta after all. What if these sounds are all just place holders for when this leaves beta and goes commercial with all music and sounds replaced? For as much as this audiogame has given the community over the years, i think its fair to say that I'm not the only one who would fork out some cash for this should that ever happen.Lastly, it really does depend on the company whether not they want to take action. There was another metroid 2 remake, a really nice fan game that Nintendo took down. Then there was sonic mania, which started out as a fan project, but Sega highered on the dev behind that and brought the game to completion. Both games were heavily inspired by their source material, yet both got completely different treatment.

Re: crazy party beta 74 is underway

But I'm not talking about the stolen stuff, I'm talking about learning from and incorporating some gameplay elements into future games. Let's take the vattle portion for example. Let's rename the moves, make them skillsvrayher than cards, lets make this a fuel against actual people. The type advantage system started long before pojemon so thats fine. Someone could build a whole top down or 3d rpg around that fighting mechanic, and its probably already been done. One thing that hasn't been done outside of cp, is a game centered around a specific genre with stages tied together with an overwoeld with a top down perspective. Adventure at c: kinda done this, but how many more genres could be given this treatment, with extras to find and play around with? These are the things that make mainstream games tick and connect with other players, far beyond word and card games, far beyond text driven stories, far beyond linear copy paste sidescrolling action games. There are more examples of concepts in there to dig for. Really, if this game didn't have a single stolen music or sound, no one would bat an eye.

Crazy party is a fan gane with a ton of creative ideas tied together by concepts familiar to me as a console gamer. Were we not just talking a few days ago about an audio game revolution? Crazy party has a sea of ideas that could be expounded upon. Those developers who never had the opportunity to experience mainstream games, but wish to revolutionize audiogames  would do well to take note, and thats why cp should not go away. However, because of much of the sound and music within the game, the moment cp becomes commercialized is the moment it lands in hot water, but as it stands, this is more than just a simple clone, and a potential source of inspiration for future developers.

Re: Let's Talk Combat

The second style of rpg combat is known as active turn-based combat, or atb for short. The first game to really have that as final fantasy 4. We don't really have a game that uses this style in audiogames that I know of, so it would be refreshing if such an rpg that contained it was created. As for myself, I like all 3 styles, and would actually reclassify shadow line as top-down adventure with rpg elements, but because it has both an exploration and combat phase,, bk1 is an excellent game that uses the third style. Also worth noting  sometimes a turn-based rpg may implement QuickTime elements in its combat, such as when you press a button to increase the damage of your attack exactly when it hits like in mario rpg, or the paper mario series. An rpg audio game that does this is your adventure. Still curiously waiting on development of that one.

Re: Kenshira Plays: Audio playthroughs and demos of mainstream games

Hi, everyone. Its a new week, which means that it's time for a new game! This week, I'm blasting my way through 3 levels of a space shooter for 2 bucks.A space shooter for 2 bucks is, well, exactly as the name implies. The game comes to us from Canadian-based Frima Studios and features full English voice acting. It was released for the psp in the early 2010s, during a time when mobile games were just taking off, and more expensive ports of mobile games were appearing on the playstation network as minis, which were compatible with the ps3, psp, and in most cases, with the ps vita. Width many of those expensive ports on the market, it was a very welcome surprise to know for once exactly what you were getting yourself into, and that was most certainly the case with this release. When this game came out, I think I was relatively new on the psp minis forum, and constantly on the hunt for new games to play, which lead me to spend money on a few games that sounded playable, but weren't. Thankfully, this was not one of those games, and I was very pleased with its simple controls, voice acting, music and sound. The game itself is a vertically scrolling shooter, which means that things will be scrolling towards you, and you can move left or right to dodge. I believe you have some vertical movement as well. Along the way, you can collect temporary powerups, special weapon and defense boosts from bossesz and upgrades for your ship via a shop. The game has a few difficulty modes you can choose from before beginning a new game one  of 3 save files. Once the game begins after the opening cutscene, the maiming modes of play are campaign and survival, with all money you earn from survival transferable to the campaign. The starting map is one that you can freely move your ship around, but the game will play a tone when hover a sector, and you can press cross to jump to it. Pressing cross again will begin the stage properly. In order for me to show you a completed stage in a timely manner, I did use a built in invincibility cheat, but it is possible to play this regularly with some grinding for upgrades, because your ship can take several hits before being destroyed, and there are checkpoints within the levels. You even get a warnning from either the commander or the ai when damage level is critical, and i believe that using your overdrive can repair some damage through upgrades. for this demo, I will be playing the game on my ps vita. Its still available on the psn at the same price, and a sequel was later released for ios. With that explanation out of the way, I present you with the demo of a space shooter for 2 bucks below, which is just a little over 40 minutes long.A space shooter for 2 bucks audio demoSpoiler tip:If you wish to turn on invincibility, from within the vertical wrapping menu of the game, press up to wrap down to credits and choose it with cross. From here, press up up down dowm left right left right square start. Afterwards, press circle to exit credits to the main menu, where you can  go down to wrap back up to campaign. There are a couple more cheats if you're interested and want to look them up.As an added bonus, Here is the trailer I saw off the psn all those years ago.Hope you guys enjoy this week's game. Not suture what I'll do next week yet, perhaps I'll finally tackle a fighter, but which one? Stay tuned to find out! Until next time!

Re: Do you still believe in the audio game revolution?

Yeah, audiogames can definitely improve, they just haven't yet. Audio-based fighters that feel like mainstream games are very much possible I think, complete with juggles and combos and parrry and complex directional inputs for throws and specials. Just no one has gone beyond bop it style reactions yet. And audio vrawlers can still go beyond treks accross flat expanses of numbered tiles from 1 to 100 in a straight line fighting emotionless brick walls that still get hit when you jump and swing along the way, just few people have explored that idea yet. And I think the best vertical scrolling shooters we have are audio strike and villains, but there is an ocean of other vertical and horizontally scrolling shooters in the mainstream that people can still draw ideas from. In this regards, I feel like the Japanese have a leg up on this scene for their ability to innovate mainstream concepts into audiogames, with shadow line emulating the zelda experience, kommando emulating the beyblades experience, bk 2 and 3 emulating the side-scrolling action adventure and horizontal scrolling shooter experience simultaneously. Yall blinkies just need more exposure to whats out there and how its being played.

Re: Blind Quest 2 - The Frost Demon Now Available

Honestly, playtime is more important to me than audio production value, so looking at the purchase of blind quest 1 in hindsight stings just a bit. I have gained more value for less costly games, some of which I still play today that  still feel fresh. Thats especially sad for me to have to say, because I'm the one who asked for that android port. Its similar to how I feel about movies. Do I wanna spend money on something thats just gonna last me 2 hours on average, or the same amount of money for something thats easily 10 times as long from start to finish on a single playthrough. I mean look at untold rpg, great music and ambience, and easily twice and two thirds as long as this, with an engaging story  collectibles, multiple paths and endings to boot. Gameplay is even almost similar, if not deeper, with more elements to consider, and at just about the same price. Now that, was 5 bucks well spent!

Yup, yall want more mainstream playable games, here is a very playable one. The 8-bit sound, and the blend of 8-bit and guitar in the music is a stylistic choice by the developers, because Scott Pilgrim is originally a comic series that revolves around classic videogame culture. Not suture its still there, but netflix has the movie that came out alongside the game, and its also audio described.

The nice thing is that you can hear things coming, from speeding cars to specific attack patterns of bosses. There are occasional edges, but you only lose a bit of health for falling off, and the characters will level up permanently over time to give you an edge in combat.

currently, audio fighting games just plum suck! There is a world of difference between something like skullgirls and the savage gammet. I guess the blind swordsman is like punchout meets fantasy so its ok.As for why a7dio games are not advancing right now, a part of the problem is that you can only convey so much information audibly. Like how do you tell someone that there is a platform ahead of you and above situated over a pit that you can hookshot to, but it is very narrow on all sides.

I wouldn't want my 6 year old nieces and nephews playing the vk games because of some of the issues it tackles. I would say that 12 plus is ok though. There are definitely a spot or two in bk3 where you basically just move right through large expanses, but it comes after some action heavy sequences, so it serves as a breather before the game starts getting crazy hectic again more than it was before. It is most definitely not a game grounded in realism, but takes place in a high fantasy setting i guess.

I think that calling the bk games childish is a grose misrepresentation of what it is and how it plays. A game with a child protagonist does not necessarily mean that its going to be stupidly simple. Re: Help understanding Skullgirls

Its probably more accurate to refer to the different punches and kicks as light, medium, and heavy. The low high thing is specific to the classic mortal kombat games, which is something else entirely, so in this case, light, medium and heavy make more sense in terms of attack strength. A light attack does the least damage, but is the quickest to pull off. A heavy attack does the most damage, but takes the longest to perform and recover from. A medium attack is somewhere in between. A basic combo string in fighting games like this is light medium heavy. You'll learn the rest from the game, but hope this clears some stuff up.

Today, I'll be drumbing my way through some of Rhythm Tengoku on the gameboy advance.First of all, let me start by saying that I want to keep this thread focused on titles that I own in one form or another. That way, you guys get the authentic consumer experience and reaction from me. Today, however, I'm going to make a very big exception for rhythm tengoku, because it changed my life as a gamer back in 2012, and completely sold me on the series, causing me to buy every english release that came after, including 3 purchases of rhythm heaven megamix. To that end at least, this game serves its purpose, so if you like what you hear and are one of the few who are unfamiliar with the rhythm heaven series and have a wii or 3ds, please consider picking up one or more of these games, whether it be rhythm heaven gold on ds, rhythm heaven Deaver on wii, or rhythm heaven megamix for 3ds. With that out of the way, let's begin the show.Rhythm heaven, known as rhythm tengoku in Japan, and rhythm paradise in europe, is a series of rhythm games published by Nintendo, and developed by the same people behind the Wario ware games. The games have you play through a set of songs built around minigames, complete with audio cues to guide you on yoir way, and you unlock plenty of extra interactive goodies as you progress. Thus, I'm going to be showcasing a sampling of some of those goodies in the first game as i work my way through a few drumbing exercises, then take my skills live. I will conclude the demo by playing through the Bondfire Dance, which is my absolute favorite song in this game..rhythm tengoku drum demoAlthough rhythm tengoku was only released in Japan, there is an unofficial english patch called rhythm heaven silver. If you use a text editor to open the patch, it is possivle to fully read the english text for each section of the game without having to resort to ocr.I hope you enjoy this half hour demo. Dince the last few weeks have featured games by Japanese developers, i will do a piece on a western developed game next week. Thank you all for tuning in.

Re: BK games

I like the gameplay style of bk1 to be honest, since it reminds me of zelda 2 with its overhead exploration and side view combat, but bk 3 is still a great game with a good recap which I wish sequels did more often.

Re: Game suggestions?

You should just play Madan then because bk series is very fantasy. Thats not to say it isn't good, because it is, but if it isn't your thing then it isn't. Still I think you  should give it a try. After all, no one knocks megaman for being a kid, they enjoy the series because it is challenging and rewarding. Never judge a book by its cover!

Its still sitting on my vita. Just need to find motivation to get to this and Muramasa. If I remember correctly, you can adjust some game settings before starting, and there are some options in the start menu for this before you pick your book..

Re: text-based games and screen readers

Part of it depends on the engine in which the game is constructed. I ran into plenty of text games on android that should have been playable, but aren't because the screen reader doesn't recognize the text in the engine. I would imagine that it is the same for all other platforms.

Their is another fighter on the nes called Joy mech fight. Japanese exclusive though, but its pretty good. Chojin sentai jetman has a pretty decent fighting mode.Having said that, tournament fighters on the nes is definitely interesting, and has some very cool music. Konami had some excellent composerd working for them.
