Re: What is a TV anyway?

One thing Samsung is going to have to do to make this TV meet accessibility standards is rewrite their manual. The current manual constantly refers to pictures or drawing rather than descripbe it in the text. For example I was trying to figure out how to turn on the audio description feature, and this is what the manual says. You can activate an audio guide that provides an audio description of video scenes for the visually impaired. This function is only available with broadcasts that provide this service. Press and hold the 80button on the Samsung Smart Control to turn Video Description on or off.Notice that instead of naming the button on the remote, there is just the number 80, which refers to figure 80.What gets me is that I think it would have been easier to name the button than to use a picture or drawing and refer to that.

Re: What is a TV anyway?

What did I buy anyway? A TV or a bunch of software? I ask because in the set up portion of the TV's menus, there is a terms and conditions entry. In there you find about half a dozen agreements you have to accept and agree to be bound by before you'll have access to all the TV's features. For exampled, to have access to the voice guidance and voice command systems you have to accept and agree to two agreements from Nuance because they provided their text to speech and speech recognition technologies to those features.Samsungs own terms and conditions agreement was 61 pages long, good grief! For a TV? Somebody's lawyers don't have enough to do.Apparently the TV collects data about you, specifically your TV viewing habbits, and sends this information back to Samsung for them to supposedly use for marketing purposes, because one of the agreements you have to accept is Samsung's privacy policy. Whether sending that data to Samsung requires yo
u to set up an account on Samsung.com, I don't know, if the data is supposed to be annonymous, I would suspect that the account has other uses. But two of the agreements mention that the collected data will allow for targeted advertising that more closely matches your interests. Does that mean Samsung or their partners can send advertising to your TV? That doesn't sound very annonymous to me.I tried the voice command option today. It's pretty neat. As it turns out, the microphone is in the remote, which means it isn't on all the time listening to you, if it was the remote would burn through batteries fairly quickly for a remote, which would be an alert to something going on. To use voice command, you hold down one of the remote's buttons for two seconds, you know when the microphone is on because the TV clicks when it turned on and the volume gets cut in half so it can hear. You give the command, which the TV repeats after it has been recognized to te
xt, then it does what you asked, if it understood you. I don't think voice command sends a recording of your voice to some server for processing because the responxe to your commands is very quick. It's possible that the recognized text is sent in the background though. Either way, I'll be using voice command because it's a lot more convenient that the TV's on screen remote.Speecking of the remote, this is certainly one of the smallest remotes I've ever run across. Here are the buttons it has; power, source, menu, volume up and down, information, channel up and down, joystick, return, play/pause, extra, smart hub, and mute. Joystick is actually two buttons, one is a large square that you press on the side of to get up, down, left, and right. The other is a select button in the middle. The return button isn't return as in enter, it's return as in go back. And the mute button is on the side. That's right, there are no number ke
ys for entering channel numbers, to do that you have to use the on screen remote. It works, but it's not very convenient, that's why I'll be using voice command, it's much easier to say "channel 34"  than it is to use the on screen remote.AS I continue to work with the TV, I begin to get the feeling that accessibility was added rather than designed in from the beginning. Either that or it is not very well tested. For one the TV keeps disabling the voice guidance. And when the voice guidance is on the TV acts like the voice guidance system is interfering with other parts of the TV's software. I've seen strange behavior in the on screen keyboard in one area and strange behavior in the channel list while editing it.I'm really curious about what benefits having the TV log in to an account on Samsung.com  provides. So far all I can think of or find is that it provides an online presence to link your social media a
ccounts to. Otherwise, the TV doesn't seem to act any differently regardless of whether it is logged into the Samsung account or not.At least for now, the electronic program guide isn't going to work. The TV uses how you get your live TV signal to determine what providers to support. I'm getting analog cable TV direct to the TV's antenna connection, unfortunately Samsung's provider list doesn't support cable TV through the antenna connector, so the only provider that's supported is off the air local channels and there's no electronic program guide available for that. One interesting point, I chose analog cable because I know the cable company doesn't have an accessible cable box, so having to use a cable box would defeat the whole purpose of getting an accessible TV. But while playing with the TV to see if I could get it to let me choose my provider, it went through a process that appeared to be for setting it up to control t
he cable box itself. If that's true, then all I'll need to do is have the cable company put in a box, and let me see if I can get the TV to control it. That would mean they'd add a couple of dollars to my monthly bill for the equipment

Re: Audio Enhancements on OEM computers

You said it crashmaster, speakers that come with laptops are crap, but to be fair, they don't really have room in a laptop for proper speakers. So they put an audio out jack on the laptop so you can hook up your own speakers.I did the same thing with the Realtek drivers you described. I discovered that all the drivers needed to work was the default windows sound system user interface. So I always disabled Realtek's user interface from loading at startup. I did this because I didn't want the unneeded fancy user interface taking up valuable system resources, not because they were inaccessible, because I still had good vision at the time. While the sound system in my laptop won't win any awards for sound quality, for what I need it for it is plenty adequate. My speakers are pretty much the same, they are just very basic stereo speakers. I got them because they are USB powered. The speakers have a standard 3.5mm stereo audio plug for audio input
and a USB connector for power. What that gets me is that the speakers turn on when the computer does, and turn off when I shut down the computer.

Re: What is a TV anyway?

Well, I guess Samsung is getting into the data mining business. To access all of the TV's features, you have to set up an account on Samsung.com and set up the TV to log into it. This is all part of their Smart Hub. Right in the agreements there is a notice that the TV sends your viewing habbits to Samsung for marketing purposes and that that information may be shared with their partners. Since the gathered data comes in through an account you set up, the data is not annonomous.Once I set this up, features of the TV that were disabled, suddenly are available.Which means, the bottom line is, unless you agree to Samsung collecting personally identifiable information about you and your TV viewing habbits, including the voice commands you say to your TV, you will not have access to all the TV's features! That's crap! I paid for the TV, I should have access to all it's features! This is probably going to be the show stopper that gets this TV returned.<
/p>After setting up the Smart Hub, I was finally able to identify my cable TV service provider, but because the TV expected me to use their set top box, which I don't, it would only allow me to select one of the HDMI or analog audio/video inputs. So no TV channels because my TV's antenna connector  is hooked up directly to the cable with no set top box.I had to go back and rerun the auto tune through the antenna input again to get my TV channels back. But then it only offered over the air local stations as my service provider. So that means the electronic program guide will not work.At this point, the TV is more than likely going to get returned. I don't think Samsung will be able to address these issues, assuming they even want to, within three weeks, and for what I paid for this TV, I'm not willing to hold on to it to wait and see if Samsung fixes these and other problems.Sebby may be right about accessibility being designed i
n from the beginning rather than added on. The TV repeatedly disables the voice guide and I believe the voice guide interferes with other parts of the TV.In one area while entering some information via an on screen keyboard, after entering a key, the cursor randomly jumped around the keyboard for three to five attempt to get it to move where you want it to.And while scrolling through the channel list removing channels I didn't want, it started skipping back about 10 channels instead of moving forward one channel, I'd have to go back one channel before it would move forward one channel like it's supposed to. When it skips back, the voice guide starts to read the correct channel, but stops and reads a channel number about 10 places back. So if I'm on channel 30 in the channel list, and go up one channel, the TV says, "thirt", pausses, "sixteen dash one"., and the channel list will be on channel 16.1, if I keep trying to go up throu
gh the channels it keeps going up from channel 16.1, but if I go down one channel first, it goes back to channel 30, then if I go up again from there it goes to channel 31, and so on. It's the reading of the channel number being interrupted that makes me feel like it's the text to speech software that's the problem. For what it's worth, Samsung got their text to speech software from Nuance because you have to agree to Nuance's terms and conditions to use the voice guide

Re: What is a TV anyway?

Actually, the accessibility option for the Trecker Satnav system sounds like it was done by a third party and not by the people who designed the Satnav system in the first place. If that's the case, then it's little wonder the accessibility isn't as good as it could be.I may have to correct myself about the TV accessibility being designed in from the beginning. I discovered that I can choose the gender of the TV's voice, to do it you have to go into the voice command options, in there, there are three settings choices, the voice command options, turning the TV's voice on or off, and setting the voice's gender. Really, those last two options should be in the accessibility options, or at least duplicated there. Kind of disorganized if you ask me.

Re: What is a TV anyway?

That the Trecker Satnav system's accessibility is poorly design isn't because they added accessibility to an existing product. The blame for it having a poor accessibility design rests soley with the designers that thought it was a good idea.Deciding whether a products accessibility is well designed based on whether the accessibility features were added on to an existing product instead of being designed in from the ground up is like judging a person based on whether they live in the country they were born in or immigrated to another country. The unit the judgement is being made with isn't relevant to what is being judged. In the case of the Samsung TV, it's probably a combination of both. They take an existing product, say a 2014 model. And start with that in designing the new 2015 model they are designing. Yet accessibility is being designed into the 2015 model from the beginningThe method works because many things in the design of a
TV aren't going to change from one model to the next, so why keep designing the same thing over and over again?.With my TV it feels like the accessibility was a part of its list of features from the beginning, because it does read everything the TV puts on the screen as text. But Samsung made some design errors in other parts of the TV.For example, instead of using the internet and partnering with someone else to provide the electronic program guides, Titantv.com and TiVo are two sources that have extensive channel and program information databases along with cable TV provider by area. Samsung decided to rely on cooperation from the various cable and satellite providers to work with them so the TV can pick up the program guides they transmit over their system for their set top boxes to pick up. Apparently, that's not working out too well. In my area none of the four cable TV providers are supported, so the electronic program guide doesn't work. The remote is poorly designed for people that have to do things by feel. The button on it are small, are barely raised above the body of the remote, and are made of the same plastic the rest of the remote is. All of this makes the buttons harter to locate. Unlike the remote from my old TV which had larger buttons that were rubberized and raised above the rest of the remote making them easy to find. With the new remote you have to focus on what you are doing to find the right button. In the accessibility menu Audio Description is turned off and the option is disabled so you can't turn it on. And so far I haven't been able to find any information about how to enable it so I can turn it on. This leads me to think that while accessibility may have been designed in from the beginning, it is not yet complete.I've also noticed a number of other settings that are disabled so they can't be changed. Some of them make sense, such as setting the clock is dis
abled because I have the clock's mode set to auto, which means the TV probably get time from over the internet or from the time singal that most PBS station piggy back on their TV signal. So there no need to set the clock's time. But I can see no reason why the other disabled options should be.Companies are finding more ways to pry into our lives. The TV has a feature called Smart Hub, at first I thought it was the flat brick shaped device that comes with the TV and connects to it via a custom cable that looks like an extra wide HDMI connector at each end. The TV itself has just the barest minimum of connections to allow it to function. If you need more connections that that, you have to hook up this brick, because it has additional HDMI conections as well as USB and optical digital audio out connections on it. Since I didn't yet need those extra connections, I haven't bothered to hook up the brick to the TV, it's still in its box along with its cable
 s. But after reading more about it, Smart Hub appears to be just the software in the TV that puts all the different sources of content in one place. In order to use Smart Hub, you have to accept Samsung's Terms of Use and Privacy Policies, and you also have to create an account on samsun.com for the TV to log into. . Since I'm not yet sure what Smart Hub is or how it might be of benefit to me, I currently have it turned off. Whether doing that disables some of the TV's features, I don't know.I still have my old TV just sitting out of the way. I also still have the box and all the packing material the new TV came in. I'll give it three weeks to resolve the issues I highlighted or to find out if they will be. If the issues don't appear that they ever will be resolved, I intend to return the TV. At this point all I've gained is that the TV tells me what channel it's on. I took care of that with the old inaccessible TV by not using the chan
nel up and down buttons, instead I entered the channel numbers directly. That's not worth the price I paid for the new TV.

Re: What is a TV anyway?

Amazing, the last time I dealt with Samsung, their technical support was basically non existent. I tried contacting them anyway about some of the problems I'm having with the TV, such as the program guide feature not working, and just got contacted by them wanting to help me resolve the problem. There's hope for this thing yet!I also discovered some addditional things about the TV.Unlike most remotes, this TVs remote uses radio to connect with the TV. I can be in another room and still operate the TV with it. There is a section in the manual about pairing a TV and a remote, so it might use bluetooth technology. Interesting.I also found out the microphone used for voice command is in the remote, which makes sense, a microphone on the TV would have difficulty hearing commands over the TV's own sound, unless the TV mutes the sound when it's expecting a command. A microphone in the remote wont have that problem since it will be closer to the us
ers than it is to the TV.And finally, what I thought was the Smart Hub, the brick with additional connectors to connect devices to the TV, is called the "One Connect Mini". All that not connecting it to the TV does is, you don't have access to those extra connections.

I'm sure I accidently changed something but since I live alone I don't have a sighted person handy to help me figure out what I did.The TVs software appears to have some bugs, frequently the TV doesn't bring up the menu when the menu button is pressed on the remote, it just says "TV" meaning it's returning to TV viewing after you've done something in the menus.

Re: What is a TV anyway?

I don't know how its development went, but I can tell you that in the setting menus there is a whole section dedicated to accessibility. There's the voice guidance that's basically a screen reader, you can adjust the voice to some degree, not as much as you can the voices in JAWS or NVDA, on the TV, there is only one voice, a female sounding one, but you can choose among five speeds, three pitches, and three volumes, the voice guidance volume is separate from the TV's audio volume. And for people with some vision left there's a high contrast mode and a screen magnifier to help make text on the screen easier to read.Samsung still has some work to do to make the TV truly blind accessible. The voice guidance system is off by default and, other than a downloadable PDF,  there are no blind accessible instructions on how to turn it on, which is easy enough for a blind user to do once he knows what to do, you just hold down one of the buttons on the r
emote for several seconds, that brings up the accessibility menu with the voice guidance system turned on.It should also put you into the learn the remote section so you can learn what all the buttons do. While trying to figure out the remote, I accidently changed the menu language to something not supported by voice guidance so I lost the voice, it took a sighted persons help to undo what I did.I already noted problems with the design of the remote in my initial post, so I won't rehash that here. The TV has its manual in electronic form built in and the voice guidance system will read it to you. You can also get PDFs of the manual from Samsung's site.TVs, have, for a long time been dedicated computers, especially with TV went digital. The difference now is that they are beginning to act like they are computers and not just a fancy TV.

Re: Audio Enhancements on OEM computers

That wasn't my experience with the Realtek sound system on my last motherboard.Yes, the Realtek supplied drivers and user interface had a rather large footprint for what they were as well as being inaccessible. When I removed the Realtek supplied drivers and user interface and let Windows XP load its generic drivers, I had the use of the entire Windows sound management system including the mixer and device preferences, which were accessible.

If there is one, I can't really blame the Cubans, Haitians, and Mexicans, for the chip on their shoulders, people from those countries tend to be very poor, then they come to the US and see how much we have. I can easily imagine the feelings of resentment that can create. So by approaching them with a wary eye, I'm giving them space to work it out.

Sebby;I've thought about it a bit and I don't understand the relevance of your question. I mean what difference does it make? As long as it is accessible, does it really matter whether it was an existing model modified to be accessible or a new model that was intended to be accessible from the beginning. At the end of the day, what you have is an accessible TV, and that's really all that matters.

How well a TV with voice command could listen to conversations would depend on where the microphone is, if it's on the TV, I'd think it would have a hard time hearing anything over the sound the TV is producing. The TV may mute the sound when it is expecting a voice command.Sebby,I don't think your question is significant because the quality of a products accessibility is dependent on the people designing the accessibility features. Whether accessibility is added to an existing product or is designed in from the ground up.Remember, iPhones weren't accessible until Apple released iOS 4, so the iPhone's accessibility was added on to an existing product and yet it is considered the most accessible smart phone.

If you need more connections than that, you have to hook up the smart hub, which is a flat brick with HDMI, digital optical audio

It's possible that some of the disabled settings are disabled because I haven't connected the smart hub to the TV, so far I haven't needed it.Sebby,I don't think your question is significant because the quality of a products accessibility is dependent on the people designing it. Well, I rescued the TV, all I had to do was turn it off for several minutes, then turn it back on. The voice guidance was still turned off, but I was able to use the shortcut to the accessibility menu to turn it back on.The electronic program guide service the TV uses is pretty bathetic. The only thing they have listed for my area are the broadcast channels, they have no cable providers listed so the electronic program guide feature won't work. I'll have to give Samsung a raspberry for that, building a feature into their products and then not adequately supporting it? May as well not have bothered.

I'm not sure if my old desktop used Wave Max software for its Realtek HD audio hardware. But when I lost my vision and discovered that the sound system's user interface was inaccessible, I uninstalled the sound system software and drivers. After rebooting, Windows recognized the sound system hardware and installed generic drivers with an accessible user interface. You lose some of the abilities of the sound system hardware, like 5.1 or better audio support, but you end up with something you can access.I'd recommend having a sighted friend around, if Windows doesn't have generic drivers for your sound system hardware, you might need their help to reinstall the original drivers and software.

Re: When is a business to big? FS in another Merger?

To combat the unemployment problem among the handicapped, here in the US companies get substantial financial breaks in the form of tax deductions, for each handicapped person they hire and keep as an employee. With that in mind, I don't think it's the cost of any assistive technology that might be needed that keeps employers from hiring the handicapped., because part of the calculation of how much of a tax deduction they get is how much they spent in assistive technology so that the handicapped people they hired could do their jobs. There in lies the problem for inexpensive and free assistive technologies like NVDA, the less companies spend, the lower the tax deduction they get. So as far as the tax deductions they get for hiring the handicapped go, it's more advantageous for a company to buy JAWS for a blind employee than it would be to just use NVDA.The real reason unemployment among the handicapped is so high is because, despite the anti discri
mination laws, companies still discriminate against the handicapped and get away with it. All they have to do is claim that they hired the best candidate for the job, and no law can tell an employer that they cannot hire who they feel is the best candidate for the positions they have that need filling.

Re: The Coolest Little Computer!

I have to side with Frastlin about Lenovo. My first laptop was a Lenovo that a friend gave me when he bought a new laptop for himself. That laptop was heavier than most laptops because it was made from desktop grade components rather than lighter mobile grade ones. But it made the laptop very powerful. other than the Alienware gaming laptops, It was the only laptop in it's day that could play main stream video games. It was also built like a tank, solid as a brick. A lot of laptop back then just felt fragile in my hands. The next Lenovo product I got was a 22 inch widescreen monitor. The monitor cost about twice what most monitors cost back then, but it had a high quality MVS LCD panel that had a fast response time for games and good color reproduction. Most monitors have cheap TN film panels, they are very fast for games but have poor color reproduction. Reds tend to be very strong giving people the appearance of being sunburned when they aren't. The monitor
also had other features that were very rare in other cheaper monitors. Even though I can't use it any more, it was such a nice monitor that I decided to keep it.

In that case you'll need a Y adapter like I described in my previous message, it will allow you to plug two devices into that one port, whether the port is on the iPhone or your computer.Yeah, Radio Shack today is more like the electronics section of a Best Buy than the electronics hobbyist store it used to be. fortunately the Radio Shack near me has been there for over 40 years under the same owner. He does sell the newerr products like cell phones, but he still sees his store as an electronic hobbyist store, so he still has all that hobbyist stuff in stock and his people do know what they are. Except for the computers and cell phones, it's like taking a step back into the past 30 to 40 years. I was talking to the owner the other day, he said he would be retiring soon and that his son would be taking over and the good news is that his son has no plans to change the store's focus away from hobbyists.Tandy, the corporation that owns the Radio Shack fran
chise,  should take a lesson, while most Radio Shack stores are closing due to lack of customers, in all the 40 years I've been going to that store for my electronics needs, I've never seen it with less than ten or so customers in it. Most are in the back with me going through the parts looking for what we need for our latest project.

I think using race or culture is a very poor way to judge a person because in both you'll find people that are truly wonderful people and people who  you wouldn't want to meet anywhere much less in a dark alley at night. If you have to judge someone, judge them by the way they act.For the most part, I've found most people of a variety of races and cultures to be very nice and considerate of other people, generally, unplesent, unfriendly, or judgemental people seem to be the exception. From my own experience I wouldn't want to deny myself of knowing some of my friends by choosing to shun a race or culture. I'd prefer to decide if I want to associate with someone based on the kind of person they show themselves to be.

What is a TV anyway?

2015-11-20 Thread AudioGames . net ForumOff-topic room : GeneWarner via Audiogames-reflector

What is a TV anyway?

I just bought a Samsung UN50JU7100FXZA 50 inch LED accessible TV.Holy crap! This isn't a TV, it's a damned computer with tuners, a big monitor, and speakers. What makes this TV accessible is that it has a text to speech system that reads to me all of the TV's menu and settings options as well as external information such as information about TV shows from the electronic program guide.Once it knows what each of the channels is, Discovery, History, ABC, NBC, etc., it can download program guides from the Internet, and it will read it to me when I use it. That will make it easy to know what's currently on and what's coming up.It also has the ability to be controlled by vocal phrases, like, "tune to" or "volume up", etc. What would be really cool, once I get all the channels set up is if I could say "tune to history channel" and it searched my channel line up for the History channel and tuned to it,
no need to remember channel numbers any more. What would be even neater, though I'm not expecting it, is if I could say "tune to Shark Tank" and it searched the program guide for Shark Tank and if it was on, tuned to it.If I hooked up a USB hard drive to it, the TV has the ability to record scheduled TV programs to it for viewing at a later, more convenient time. Unfortunately that feature is disabled in the US and Canada. Rats! I'll bet I have the lawyers paid by the motion picture and music industry association to thank for that. Otherwise, I can't think of any logical reason why recording programs for watching later shouldn't work just because I live in the US or Canada. Normally, I'm not inclined to hack things because everytime there's an update to the device, you have to redo the hack, but the ability to record programs for later viewing is such a useful feature that I'll be watching for a hack to reenable itThe TV ca
n be hooked up to the Internet for streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube, Pandora, and others. It also has a web browser in it! I don't expect to be using any of those, but I will have it hooked up to the Internet so it can get the program guides.I'm not sure I like the remote for the new TV. The remote for the old TV had nice, well defined, raised, and rubberized buttons that were easy to find and use. The new remote's buttons are small, designed to blend into the remote, and made of the same material, making them not so easy to find and use. For that reason, I plan to see how much voice command can do to minimize the need to use the remote. One thing that I thought was interesting. My old TV has a 46 inch screen, my new TV's screen is 50 Inches, and yet the old TV weighs more than the new TV does. There is a lot to explore here, it should keep me out of mischief for a while.

Re: what is the most imbarrosing/ occward situation you have ever been in?

People can be so wierd at times. In our area a local church runs a fund raising event called the Soup-a-thon. To attend you have to buy tickets, it's very popular, the soup-a-thon is usually in January, the Tickets usually go on sale somewhere around Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday in November) . The are usually sold out by the end of the month. In it a lot of restaurants from around the area donate  soup along with employees to handle heating it up and dishing it out. Attendee's then go around and get small bowls of various soups they want to try. You are usually full after about eight bowls, but you got to try a lot of different soups. I look forward to it every year. They hold the soup-a-thon over a weekend and divide each day into three setting sessions lasting about an hour and a half each. The first time I went, it was dark by the time we left. I still had some vision left so I wasn't yet using a white cane, but had zero for night vision so
my Dad had to guide me to our car. He forgot he was guiding me and ran me into a curb, the grass on the other side of the curb was a slope going down to a pond, which is where I ended up. Being January, winter here in the US, it was unplesently cold. The second time I went to the soup-a-thon, I decided to take my white cane, which I needed now,  so that I could detect things like curbs, in case my guide forgets to tell me about them. When we arrived, there was a long line of people waiting for the doors to open for the next seating session. I unfolded my cane and used it while my mom guided me. The reaction to my cane was immediate and dramatic. Everybody got out of our way as if touching the cane or us would give them blindness. I could hear them moving about and it was all I could do not to laugh at their antics. Then one of the church people saw us and immediately ushered us to the beginning of the line. Once the doors openned and we were inside, they then led us to sp
ecial tables set aside for the handicapped. While it was nice to go to the beginning of the line to get in, the handicapped tables weren't so great, there was a lot of traffic around them as people went to and from their tables, getting more soup to try. This year it's a toss up whether I'll take out my cane or not. My Dad thinks I should take it out anyway, then when we get inside, we'll decline the offer to use the tables for the handicapped.

There is no shame, statistically 85% of blind people are unemployed because nobody wants to hire them, so many people that want or need JAWS have no choice but to seek assistance to get it. It's the same for most of assistive technology devices because the market place is so small. The issue is, that by this argument against JAWS,. You use JAWS, but did you purchase it with your own credit card, with no outside assistance what soever? I know that I had no assistance getting NVDA... this person seems to think that needing assistance is shameful enough to warrant choosing something other than JAWS.Since it was aimed at me, it made the debate personal and I found it insulting that without knowing anything about me, this person assumes that I could not buy JAWS without assistance.Besides, this remark has no business being in a thread about a merger between two assistive technology companies.

Re: When is a business to big? FS in another Merger?

I don't think that JAWS or any of Freedom Scientific's other text to speech software products, like Open Book, will be affected by the merger because, as far as I can tell, Optelek is primarily a hardware company making mostly hand held video magnifiers.I wouldn't be surprised to see technology being swapped back and forth between the two companies to enhance their magnifier products. But, that would be about it.For those who haven't listened to the podcast. According to Blake, Freedom Scientific's CEO, there will be no changes to the way either company does business until both companies have a firm grasp of what the other company has to offer to the entire business.Wile what it maens is vague, Blake said that one thing they wanted to be sure of was that they did nothing that could result in a customer from either company having a negative experience with them.I think he's just putting a happy face on things he doesn&
#039;t yet know. So, for now, we are still in a holding pattern as far  as what this merger will mean to the blind and visually impaired people who rely on products from either company.

From what he says it sounds like any school that needs or wants to provide screen readers on their computers for students that need them can only use JAWS. I applaud Freedom Scientific for supporting education, your favorite deity knows that education is badly underfunded in the US so any support they can get from the private sector is a big help. But to use that to gain unfair advantage in the market place is just wrong on so many levels. One could point fingers at Freedom Scientific for proposing such an arangement, but you'd also have to point fingers at the rest of the industry for not contesting it, and also at the government and education officials that accepted it.Apple did pretty much the same thing back in the 80s by offering Apple 2s and
Macintoshes to school system for little or no cost. So just about every school that had computers, had computers from Apple. Of course the move didn't help them much in the long run. The Apple 2 soon died and Macintoshes never achieved anything like the market dominance the PC compatibles enjoyed.

Brant, according to the podcast, Vector Capital, the company that accquired both Freedom Scientific and Optelek, said that for now both companies will continue as "business as usual". Consumers will not notice any change. Over time, as the two companies get to know each other, they will begin colaberating. It sounds to me like the greatest change we'll see will be in their products.

Dark, lucky you! It may have been on cassette as opposed to being a modern digital book, but at lease you got to listen to a human read the book. The talking book library hasn't gotten around to digitizing Tailchaser's Song so I'll have to listen to a computer read it from DAISY files from Book Share. Oh well, at least I'll get to read it.The Otherland series is in digital form and is on my list of books to read, along with what seems like a thousand other books. So many books, so little time. LOL!Somebody may already have mentioned this but, another series I've read and enjoyed is Tad Williams' Shadowmarch series, it's has 4 books, Shadowmarch, Shadowplay, Shadowrise, and Shadowheart.A bit off topic but related.Just as some movie watchers follow favorite stars, I've found that when I'm looking for new talking books to add to my to read list that I check to see who read it and am happy when it is one of the r

I don't know where you get your information but JAWS is not used only by institutions, I myself and most of my blind friends plus most of the blind people I know use it and we are hardly an institution. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking on your part?Of course most of us use JAWS because that was what was recommended to us by the rehabilitation center we went to. But now I've heard that depending on your computer skills, they might recommend NVDA.From my own experience, if you have the computer skills necessary you can with some effort get NVDA to work as well as JAWS. JAWS comes with a fairly extensive set of configuration files for those commonly used programs that need a little tweaking. NVDA on the other hand doesn't come with anything, so if a program you want to use doesn't quite work with NVDA you'll have to create your own configuration for it yourself. The best way I can describe it is that NVDA is the computer techie

It's a more practical financial solution. You use JAWS, but did you purchase it with your own credit card, with no outside assistance what soever? I know that I had no assistance getting NVDA...I find this question insulting, but I'll ignore that and answer your question anyway. Yes I bought JAWS with my own money with

I don't go around insulting NVDA users by implying that they had to choose NVDA because they are poor or needed assistance to get JAWS.severestormsteve1 wrote:5. You actually have to go through a whole set up wizard with JAWS when it's installed. There are so many settings you have to configure, and you have to read the documentation to get what some of them mean. The same is true of NVDA. With JAWS I've been able to make all the adjustments I needed or wanted almost without ever reading the manual. With NVDA, I could not get any program specific settings to work until I've read the manual. That's time that I could have been productive.severestormsteve1 wrote:6. May I ask what tweaking, (Code because jaws requires s

Or, were you just trying to make it like Jaws since that's what you were used to. Unfamiliarity does not make a screen reader only usable for geeks and techies. I had a hard time getting used to NVDA, simply because I was using Jaws for 3 years before starting with it. But to be honest, I was doing my every day tasks with NVDA, starting the first day...No code tweaking at all, usually just a changing a single setting. And no, I wasn't trying to make NVDA like JAWS, I was willing to accept learning a different program. The tweaking I had to do in NVDA was to make the programs accessible, period. For example, in NVDA my prefered file manager is completely inaccessible until you make some pretty significant changes to NVDA. But in JAWS I only had to change one setting and that was so JAWS could read the filenam

If I was willing to forego multi file operations, the file manager was completely accessible in JAWS with no adjustments necessary. No, I don't believe I'm bashing NVDA, it's quite an impressive program, I'm just comparing it to JAWS, but because you don't agree with me you call my comparisons, bashing. On the other hand, I see a lot of scornful comments made about JAWS that are just opinions, rather than comparisons of the two programs, now that is bashing. But, go ahead and bash away, because it's human nature to bash the top dog. So all you are doing when you bash JAWS is acknowleging that JAWS is the best screen reader.k_jones, You're right, this is turning into a screen reader debate which is not the purpose of this thread. Re: book suggestion for someone who was blown away by wheel of time and th

Yeah, I don't care for synthesized reading, but it is better than not being able to read the book at all. What I really need is a decent stand alone text to speech DAISY book reader with a decent voice similar to Eloquence. Preferably one that can also play the NLS digital books and MP3 files.I think that one of the major reasons why I liked Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn so much is because Simon and Miriamelle weren't these shining heros that could do no wrong. They both had flaws, made mistakes, and sometimes acted stupidly. There were times when Simon was very awkward and while Miriamelle didn't share Simon's awkwardness, she was at times a very sheltered little princess and so very naive. but it made them very likable because it made them very human. They were easy to identify with.Shadowmarch was good, but at the end I thought, well, that might have been better if it was only three books long. It seemed to me like somewhere in the middle, the stor
y was getting stretched a little too thin. And while I rooted for Berik and Briony, there were times when I wished that they were more like Simon and Miriamelle. And some things in Shadowmarch, I thought went a lottle too far, such as the living god and his slaves that always laid down in front of him so he could walk on them to prevent his feet from ever touching the ground. To me that was rather silly.

Re: When is a business to big? FS in another Merger?

This just looks like more Freedom Scientific bashing to me.First of all, before the merger can happen it has to be approved by the Fedral Trade Commision. One of their jobs is to insure that businesses don't get so big that they could become a monopoly.Second, if I wanted to take the time, I could name thousands of businesses that are far larger than Freedom Scientific will be if the merger is approved. Companies like, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, Google, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Amazon, Wal-Mart, Sears Roebuck, AT, Verizon, Publix, need I go on? As far as I know, these are all US companies, I'll bet there are plenty of UK based companies that are just as bigg as those. While we are discussing Freedom Scientific getting too big, let's discuss companies in general getting too big so as not to target a specific company.

Dark,Unfortunately, I find that to be a problem with many stories. They start off really well, but by the time you get to the ending, the story seems to have lost the momentum it had in the beginning, and the ending seems a bit contrived just to finish it, and be done.MSlion ,I first read Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, before I lost my vision and while it was still being written. The paperback for Stone of Farewell was released while I was reading The Dragonbone Chair, and had to wait for To Green Angel Tower. If you live in the US and are a member of the National Library of Congress' Talking Books for the Blind Program, you can get it from them or download it from their BARD web site. I wish they had Tad Williams' Tailchaser's Song, but Book Share does. Pity, I much prefer listening to a human than a computer.

Whether this is a good thing or bad depends on several factors. If Optelec wasn't doing that well, the merger with Freedom Scientific may keep products on the market that would otherwise have disappeared. On the other hand, it sounds like both companies make video magnifiers, so perhaps Freedom Scientitfic wants to add Optelec's technology to their own and develop some new products from the blend.Or maybe Freedom Scientific is just looking to clear the field of its competition, if that's the case, then I don't favor this merger at all. The choices the blind and visually impaired community have are already slim, the last thing we need is somebody killing off what choices we do have. Before I lost my vision and was just entering the vision impaired community, I looked at video magnifiers. Their price kept me from buying one, but I can say that there were quite a few models from quite a few vendors. This merger in no way puts Freedom Scie

AI Squared, the makers of the ZoomText screen magnifier also make video magnifiers, and I don't see them going anywhere any time soon. The way I look at it is that this is just a merger, not an out right buy out. What that means is that Freedom Scientific and Optelec are joining forces. I don't think Freedom Scientific will have any more control over Optelec than it did before the merger. In 2000 I still had 20/60 vision so products from companies like Freedom Scientific weren't in my radar yet.20/60 vision is just marginally vision impaired. I could read printed material with no problem and ride a bike safely, I just couldn't drive a car because you have to have 20/40 or better vision to get a driver's license.

I don't need that, I always download the PDF, then view it. Viewing is faster and smoother that way.

Here are some more, though maybe not for the topic starter as they are most for teen readers, never the less, I think they are  good enough to recommend.Veronica Roth's Divergent series, 3 books, Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant. There is a 4th book, it's a collection of short stories by Roth that take place in the world of the Divergent series, it is call Four: a Divergent collection.Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games series, 3 books, The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay.Mike Mullin's Ashfall series, 3 books, Ashfall, Ashen Winter, and Sunrise.Lois Lowry's The Giver series, 4 books, The Giver, Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son. This series is interesting in that the first 3 book seem unrelated until you read the 4th book.Enjoy! I did!

Apparently NS Studio's hosting service was having issues, they put the file in a dropbox and I was able to succefully download it on the first try.I was wondering where I'd get sounds for a couple of audio games I'm working on. I guess that now I know. :-D

As it is now, with not enough memory and a dieing battery, I'm considering upgrading to an iPhone 6s next month when my contract on the iPhone 5s expires.I'll probably go with 64 GB, which is about twice what I minimaly need. If I can get a deal on it, I'd go with the 128 GB model just to be sure, but I'm not willing to pay more of Apple's extravagant prices than I have to.

Ethin,Rather than try AVG Ultimate, I decided to try AVG Free anti virus, I got my answer about how accesible it wasn't pretty quick. I got to the second page of the installer where they try to sell you the Pro version and no matter what I did I couldn't get it to continue from there when I chose not to buy Pro. So I canceled and deleted the AVG installer, and decided that AVG wasn't accessible. So now I'll see if I can find the thread about accessible anti viruses to see what else I can try.

Re: what is the most imbarrosing/ occward situation you have ever been in?

I recently had to have a cable TV installer make a service call to my place because I thought I wasn't getting all the channels I was supposed to.When he arrived, he demonstrated that there was no problem. I then demonstrated the missing channels. He told me the channel I had just tuned to and it wasn't what I thought I was tuning to. It turns out that Panasonic made the remote for my TV backwards. From before I lost my vision, every TV or video device related remote had a key pad like a calculator's with the 1, 2, and 3 keys on the bottom row, but this remote's key pad was made like a phone's with the 1, 2, and 3 keys on the top row. So when I thought I was tuning to channel 19 I was actually tuning to channel 73. I felt pretty foolish after that discovery.Yeah, sighted people can be strange. I just moved, my brother was visiting, helping me get my new place organized. While he was there, I had him follow me as I walked to the grocery
store next door. I wanted to make it there on my own but since I hadn't been there for over 20 years, I wanted him to point out where things had changed that affected my walk to and from the grocery store. One thing he kept doing which bothered me was to announce to everyone that I crossed paths with that that I was blind and that they should let me know they were there by announcing themselves. I tried to tell him that it wasn't necessary for them to announce themselves unless they wanted or needed to interact with me, but I guess he didn't believe me because he just kept on doing it.Although I'd feel really bad if someone tripped over my cane, I don't worry about it. I have a need and a right to use the cane, and since they are the ones who can see, it's their responsibility to notice my cane and not trip over it. That may be callous, but honestly, I'm the one who can't see, how am I supposed to know when I should pull my cane b
 ack to avoid tripping someone?

Re: blind mice mart, where arhe are the movies

My experiences with the movie vault.I'm in the US and discovered the movie vault several months ago, I've been accessing it since then with no problems, so the remark about people in the US not being able to access the movie vault is wrong. To get access the movie vault, you have to sign up to be a member of the Blind Mice Mall, and then be logged in, once you are logged in, the link to the movie vault appears. Some where on the movie vault page is an email address to Lee Hodgson who is generally very quick and very helpful in solving download problems. Lee has offline backups of all their movies and shows so fixing files with download problems usually take only 24 hours. The search feature doesn't search just the titles. It searches the entire movie description, which includes genre. I recently did two such searches and they worked just fine. The first was to search for "TV" to pickup all the TV series they had. The other was to s
earch for "Documentary", because I like them. The only problems I've ever had with sendspace was the how slow the downloads were, but that was easily solve by getting a sendspace subscription.I hope that helps everyone. :-)

My memory could be flaky and low numbers on the top row like a phone may be the standard, but for whatever reason, my brain thought that low numbers on the bottom row was.Oh well, after that, I'm not likely to forget the proper order. On the flip side, I'm paying for just basic cable TV with just the local channels, but because the cable distribution equipment is old here, if they put in a basic cable trap, TV can't recieve anything, so I'm getting all the channels in the standard cable package. The cable company won't fix it because that would take replacing all the equipment in the apartment complex which would cost them more than the few bucks they're losing to those few people that order only basic cable. They said I'm probably the only person in the complex that ordered just basic cable. The problem with the equipment is apparently not common knowlege or more people would take advantage of it. To keep the benefit to me, I&
 #039;ll keep their little secret!

Re: knfb alternative?

One reason why I spent the $99 for KNFB Reader is because I learned that many of the cheap or free OCR apps don't do the OCR recognition on your device. Instead the picture of the page you are trying to process is sent to a server where the OCR recognition is performed, then the resulting text is sent back to you.If that's the case, I'd be very nervous about what I use the OCR app on. That the OCR is done on somebody's server opens up some serious privacy and security concerns.

And Windows 7's built in zip file manager gives unspecified errors if I try to use it to extract the files. This is my second attempt to download the file, the first attempt terminated early.

Very annoyed. NS Studios must know they are dealing with blind and visually impaired people, and yet there is a very difficult, for me, CAPTCHA in the middle of the purchase process.I tried more than a dozen times to get past the CAPTCHA but the quality of the audio puzzles with the electronically altered voices is poor enough to be difficult at best to understand, so I simply couldn't get past it.Until that CAPTCHA is removed, I'll just consider this inaccessible.Besides, who ever heard of blocking being able to make a purchase with something like a CAPTCHA anyway? In all the online purchasing I've done over the past nearly 20 years, this is the first time I've ever encountered a CAPPTCHA in the purchase process.I will say no more on this, it either gets fixed so I can purchase the library, or it doesn't, and they lose a sale.

I discovered this accidently and wonder, is this intended or just an artifact of using Ineter Explorer to render many of the Windows screen like the Control Panel or Windows Explorer. While on the desktop, press the Windows key +D to make sure the desktop has focus, then press control+n, now if you use alt+tab to switch applications, you'll find you have two desktops.Since I don't know what the status of this is, or what it might do, play with this at your own risk.

Re: The Coolest Little Computer!

I know some TVs can play content from a USB flash drive. Are these supposed to look like a file on a flash drive with the difference being the images are being generated dynamically, such as for a game, instead of just being stored in a file, such as for a movie?

No Flash player installed

By choice I do not have Adobe's Flash player installed. The reason is because I've run across a number of web pages that automatically start a Flash video, and you can't do anything on the page until the video finishes, and the flash player control are inaccessible. Now I run across a number of web pages that hang the browser, and other web sites where Internet Explorer reports that a script is slowing down the browser and asks if I want to continue running it.Would not having Flash installed cause web pages that expect it to behave that way?If so is ther a way to have Internet Explorer simply ignore anything Flash? On about half the sites where I'm having these problems, using Firefox instead doesn't eliminate the hanging.

Re: book suggestion for someone who was blown away by wheel of time and th

In the Stormlight Archives, I thought the first book was a lot better than the second, I hope that's not a sign of where things are headed. If you like Tolkien, I highly recommend Dennis McKiernan's Mithgar series. It's not a series like Wheel of Time, each book in the Mithgar series is a stand alone story, the stories all take place on a world called Mithgar. For DND stories, there's also Terry Brooks.

Re: The Coolest Little Computer!

I think those were designed with the idea that you set up multiple work stations where you need them, then just carry the computer and it's storage with you. That being said, I'll keep my laptop, thanks. It's a computer and a work station all in one compact, light weight package. But if you are intent on using these, I'd recommend storing your files on the internal flash for ease of use and portability, but back it up on an external hard drive.
