Re: What Was the First AudioGame you Ever played?

For me the very first game i played was drive, soon followed by topspeed 1. Some time later i discovered this site, and i just learned how to install software on my windows xp laptop, so i installed almost everything i could find :-) At that time, my favourite games were lightcars, topspeed 2 and mudsplat. Than I lost interest in most games, because i didn't understand a lot of the english in most games, but a year ago i started playing topspeed, dmnb and soundRTS.

Q9 was one of the first ones I played, Battle Zone, it's quite ironic you mention that now because I just downloaded that yesterday and finished playing it before posting this.  And holy crap your 3rd game was BK2? God dang! By the time I played that I was well into audio gaming, but I gave up on it due to the broken ground aspect, (seemingly no way to see how wide it was and if there was one next to it).

Well as I said I actually started playing interactive fiction rather before I started on audiogames. The first game I played was the tads port of the original colossel cave adventure, however the first game I actually finished all the way to the end and really enjoyed was Andrew Plotkins Dreamhold, which is of course an introductory adventure anyway, albeit a very epic one.

Re: What Was the First AudioGame you Ever played?

Hmmm, Ive never heard of this thing, actually the only voice Ive ever heard on a bbc was a truly abysmal one my specialist school used to have on this weerd trivia quiz program that might have even been written for them specially, it manage to make three quarters plus three quarters plus a half, sound like Sree dwaarters plus sree dwaarters plus a mouth it was truly horrible! then again that wouldve been in about 1991 and I dont think synths were so advanced at that point.Needless to say my specialist school didnt have anything fun like moon lander, or even any fun early text games, indeed I dont know if they had any games at all as the only program I saw was that quiz thing. I only got to play moon lander because we got given a secon hand bbc micro with a bunch of games in the late 90s, though mostly I played the classics like centipeed, felix an the evil weavels, robot that sort of thing.

Hmmm dark ages of kitchinsinc? funny, I was playing a quick round of golf the other day .@Rosie, I havent heard of or played kidnapped, I missed out on the hole dos gaming thing due to my first laptop being a windows 3.1 machine given to me at school in around 1995, and my general perception which persisted right up until about 2004 that computers werent for gaming. however, there is a game called Gma lander on the gma games site that is a free remake of an older title. I am not sure if it is the same as the dos luna lander, it involves judging the speed of a descending space craft (through both sound and speech), and usin the correct amount of thrust to slow its descent. If your looking for remakes of older titles you might want to give it a look.

Ah, that makes sense. I do recall a graphical bbc micro game called luna lander, but that worked a little differently to gma lander sinse you had to navigate around various mountains as you came in to land, also the numeric thrust and descent mechanics werent as complex.

The first audio game I ever played on the PC was Pong from Kitchensinc, but when I was in high school in about 1986 I used to play text adventure games on the Apple 2E with Echo speech like Kidnapped and The Great Escape, which, Im happy to see is available for the PC. Id love to see Kidnapped remade. I havent had a chance to get out of the building. I only managed to make it down to about the 7th floor. But games like Lunar Lander were kind of fun even though I never was able to make a soft enough landing on the moon.

heres how i got stared with audiogames. ok, so back in 2010 i think it was, i got my first laptop that was actually mine i had a school one but i was not aloud to use it for anything but school work. so, on that computer all i could do was turn it on, then turn it off again, i guess thats a start? so i finally found out about jaws and gave it a try, however, the 40 minute mode annoyed me, so i wnt to look up more screen readers and found nvda. so, you might ask, what does this have to do with audiogames? well, along with that computer i got azabat games volume 1 and 2, i remember playing those quite a lot then, in 2012 i started to use the computer for skype and such, met some people on there and thats my start into audiogames

Does 2XL count as audio games? Cause I got a 2XL at some point... I dont even know which year, maybe when I was 5 or 6? Maybe-maybe 7.Then there were the games on the Braille n Speak 2000... though, actually, I think I started developing my own games before I got the BNS with games on it. I dunno, it depends what counts as developing games.I dont want to count all my games from before 2008, so I guess Brian Smarts Sword game would be the first Audio Game for Windows that I played Ah, wait. I did play Winboard and Star Fight way before that. I think I got to Star Fight as far back as 2001, even.Im having difficulty with the order of events between 2007 and 2010, but I played Drive and Sara at some point, tried XHour, then kinda forgot about it until I realized I was making audio games why wasnt I asking people who actually play them how bad they are derp So then I came here right after Yukionozawa fir
st posted that big list of his games, and immediately tried playing Bokurano Daibouken. Then Mota. Then the rest is pretty well documented.

Re: What Was the First AudioGame you Ever played?

Hi.Well, it was a while ago now that I started playing audio games, and I remember the day vividly. It was the end of 2010, and I remember that it was snowing really heavily that day. Because of this, I had the day off school. After going outside and sledging with my friends, I came in and went on BlindCoolTech (Id found that website a few months before.) Whilst browsing, I found a review of a game called Sarah and the Castle of Witchcraft and Wizardry, done by Kelly Sapergia. I thought it sounded interesting as Id never really known there were games available just for the blind and visually impaired. After listening, I knew Id just have to download the demo and have a go. I was terrible at it at first and kept getting caught by the caretaker, but through the years Ive got better and better. So there we go; that was the first ever audio game I played. If I ever play that game now, it always reminds me of Christmas, as that was t
he first time I played it. I just wish version 1.2 had come out...

Before I got my pc, I used to play the living books titles to death under mac OS. LB was a series of interactive titles for younger children that was very popular in the the 90s. As for playability, believe it or not, if you have intelikeys keyboard (as in my case) they are fully playable.

Re: What Was the First AudioGame you Ever played?

Heres the flamity flame documentation, lols!Welcome to flamity flame.1. introduction1.1. descriptionFlamity flame is a small audio game thats soul purpose is to bring to life a poem that was written by Steven Daugherty, (http://stevend.net), entitled Flamity Flame, a Lame Audio Game. (see section 1.3) This game, though not as lame and pointless as is depicted in the aforementioned poem, is nonetheless an eppic waste of time. However, this is a good way to pass time, especially in small increments.1.2. creditsMason armstrong, and the internet, for sound affects.Microsoft Mike, for being the rarely used voice of James... lol.Steven Daugherty for recording and composing cut scenes, and death and pain sequences.1.3. PoemI remember the day, when I dared to play, an audio game, that was very lame. The audio game, that was very lame, that I dared to play, had a stupid name. The name of the game, was Flamity Flame, and Flamity Flame, was such a horrible game. Because in Flamity Flame, The goal of the game, was to attempt to kill, a man known as James. Now what made this game, so very lame, Is the fact that James, had no sound at which to Aim. And what kind of game, that is audio by claim, has a guy named James, at whom you cannot Aim?So to this day, I don’t know who to blame, but all I can say, they made a terrible game!2. the main menuWhen you first open the game, you will be introduced into a rather self-explanitory main menu. The options start game, listen to poem, and exit are present. To navigate through this menu, use your left and right arrow keys, and press space to activate the appropriate option. When listening to the poem, to stop the speech simply press the left or right arrow, and though a menu option will be announced, it will stop reading of the poem.3. gameplayFlamity Flame follows a basic set of rules, those which have been outlined in the poem above. You are placed on an x-only (side scrolling) grid that ranges from 0 to 20. When you spawn at level 1, you will be placed in the safe zone, or the range of coordinates between 0 and 4. In this zone, James is unable to spawn, meaning that it is impossible to attack james or be attacked in this area. Also, you will notice a couple things: e speak will tell you the location of james, which is just a single number. This is where you must place yourself with the left and right arrows in order to interact with james. To here jamess coordinates again, press the number 1 on your keyboard, and press C to hear yours. The second thing you will here is a robotic voice threatening you off to the right. This is the only sound that james will make, save for the burning sound you hear when he is hit with the flame thrower you have. To walk, use the left and right arrows. if you reach the maximum boundary of the grid (20), you will hear a beep when trying to walk again. This also applies if you come to coordinate 0. To shoot james, listen to his coordinates, and then tap the left and/or right arrows until your coordinates match with his. You can quit tapping on the arrow key and press c to see what your coordinates are, however this is not wise if you are where james is.when you reach james, hit the space bar to fire one shot of flame at him. In the easier levels, you can usually score 8 to 14 shots before james shoots back, without moving left or right and then back. However, when at level 3 or above, it is recommended that you step left or right once every 2 to 3 shots, before resuming your fire, because jamess reaction time is a lot faster then. Once you kill james, you will advance a level, and his firing speed will increase, and his level will reset. However, yours will not, so try not to get shot in earlier levels, please. Also, the amount of damage that a shot does will increase when you level up, and you will hear a more angry message from James. When you kill him at the end of level 5... there will be a *** that ***, and then you will be put back at the main menu.Did you actually think Id tell you what would happen? lol Anyways, dont die, or try not to. This could result in you thrashing helplessly on the floor and gasping and choking until you die, or just falling dead. None of these, I assure you, are things you want to do. muhahaha!4.Um is this even a chapter? I dont think so. Well heres the text of it happy gaming! I hope you get addicted!

Re: What Was the First AudioGame you Ever played?

As for flamity flame, Ive discovered that my code for packing sounds into an executables was missing a step (and that line was for every single sound so it will take about 30 minutes to complete). However, audio demo and game should be released come next blog post. and for those of you who know about it, dont worry, Im still working on the racing game.Back on topic, though...Yeah I remember that tiger woods golf game you speak of, actually. I got it for christmas and played it a few times... but dont remember much how game play went, however I do remember being able to play it. Besides that and the wii sports game and some other games of wii sports resort (with sighted assistance for the latter), I dont play it much at all.

Re: What Was the First AudioGame you Ever played?

I have also had a bit of mainstream gaming experience. My family owns a Wii, but Im really the only one who plays it anymore. Before my sister left for college, her and I used to play on it a lot together. I sometimes also play a little league baseball game on it with my dad. I can play all of the wii sports games by myself and I also play a tiger woods golf game on the Wii. There are many more games that we own, most of which I require help on. Several years ago, I used to play a lord of the rings return of the king game on the gamecube. I was quite good at it and could even win a few of the levels. My sister also used to play that one with me a lot.

Hey guys what would you think if I created flamity flame, the game in the poem in the first post?OK it wont be so horrible as the poem made it out to be. It will be very pointless and small, but it could give you 5 minutes of fun. Ill create anyway, but wondered if you wanted to have open minds and try it?

Re: What Was the First AudioGame you Ever played?

Im actually working on it right now and since its really small should have it finished pretty soon. Currently making James have a stronger gun that speeds up every level, so you have to blast him with your flame thrower and jump to the side before he lashes back. Oh and by the way, a note that is also more on topic. Did you guys know that before I played audio games, I was visualising a game called Ball Launch? In this game youd press the control key to launch the ball and hit it around with keys on the keyboard, sort of like penball but a bit different. I actually wrote up a book of commands and descriptions on a bunch of notecards when I was... er... 10 years old. In fact, thats the reason I downloaded visual basic 2008 express edition, but of course I knew nothing about programming at the time. Man, I wish I hadnt lost that command book. That actually couldve been something, you know?

Re: What Was the First AudioGame you Ever played?

Interesting defender, and great to here of someone actually growing up with audiogames and being introduced by their parents. The odd thing for me is I never even thought! of playing games on a computer with a screen reader. We used to have an old tape drive Amstrad cpc in the late 80s, and then a commador amigar both of which I played graphical ames on with my limited vision, (before we upgrade to a snes in about 1992), however it never occurred to me that the windows laptop I was using for school work could be used for anything as fun as games. That computer was for school and that was tha. It wasnt until I got to university and started playing browser games and interactive fiction titles that I changed my attitude, even though I probably learnt more about how to navigate complex web pages and controls and mess about with text doing that than I ever had by being officially taught.I also am a tad jealous of your
experience playing games with other people in your family, sinse generally even though my mum has only slight better sight than I do she is certainly not enough of a fan of computers to want to play games on them so whenever we played games it is with braille cards or board games wed labeled etc. Then again I did have a couple of fun experiences in 2005 or 6 with some friends at university playing Jim Kitchins game of life, being that they walke in while I was in the shower, so I asked them to start up life and turn up the volume and as the only voice I had was microsoft sam we had some fun with the speech, indeed we used the phrase but you dant as a joke for a while afterwards . Btw steve, Im not a big fan of sport games either, though i o like Jim Kitchins golf game, however I coul
d never make hea nor tale out of Nfl, an even baskit ball was a bit of a pest given that those are sports we dont have in the Uk.

Re: What Was the First AudioGame you Ever played?

Ive had a bit of mainstream gaming experience myself, especially when my older brothers were still in their early teens and owned a play station... though that was several years ago. I dont really remember what it was called but wed play this fighting game and I thought it was quite fun, actually, and managed to win a couple of times...Then of course there is the wii. I can actually play all games on wii sports by myself, and still do on occasion. Ive played other games such as wake boarding, and even remember spending all night playing a dog fight (not really with dogs, more like helicopters and such). A friend of mine also let me play with him on the xBox, a fighting game of course. I blew myself up but yeah... still a fun experience. I am jellous of you as well, defender... I have a totally blind sister, but the only audiogame I could get her to play with me was dragon pong last year, and weve played Quentin Cs
playroom and RS games as well. If only I could get her on rtr, top speed, or something else? As for my parents, yeah... um... no not likely. None of them know how to play audiogames, and theyre fully sighted. Plus they have work and stuff during the week... and sometimes weekend as well. Im sure that if they wanted to they could get in a quick game, though, and Id actually find that amusing enough to record a podcast of it.

I also remember trying to beat each others scores on Sonic Invaders, with only the desktop speakers, and no headphones.Damn its cool having parents only 20 years older than you... I can remember going to summer camp around that time as well, and learning about SCW, Super Liam, rail racer, and other payed games from a pair of kids there at OSB, which I started to ask for as birthday and Christmas presents. Some of those memories are the most fond I have of my dad actually, playing games in the summer in Oregon, as well as later, in Gresham, having water gun fights and picnics, watching the fireworks on the forth of July and such.God, how time passes you by, I feel like an old man pining for times long gone, when everything made sense and feeling alive came easy, because e

Re: What Was the First AudioGame you Ever played?

thats interesting. I dont really play muds although you mightve seen me on alter aeon a time or two... yeah. When I was first introduced I didnt think about the whole simplistic nature thing some of you previously thought; I just wanted to play, well, games. But then again, I was quite young at the time, so didnt know about that stuff anyway.I remember the days (2 years ago) when castaways was the, game, for me. lol, that was right before I found out about swamp...

Re: What Was the First AudioGame you Ever played?

well, my very first Audio game that I played was drive. My sister had it on her pc and I got a turn at it back in 2006 or 7 when I was about 6 years old. She also had pigeon Panic, sonic match, top Speed and a german game called möckenjagt and one more game called duck hunt. the first game that I actually installed and played was duck hunter from l works. then I downloaded other l works games but my english was very bad at the time so i struggled to understand the read mees of games. the most helarious Thing was that I thaught by deleting the thank you for playing the demo! sound file in the super liam Directory, the game would Register itself but I just ended up getting an error when ever that file was supposed to be played. I played around with These games for a while, then from the l works site I think I found a link to the bsc games Homepage and downloaded troopanom, pipe 2 and hunter and all of those other games. of corse, I could only Play the demo of These games. From bsc games, I found a link to the audiogames Website. at first I had no idea where all of the games were to be found but then I found the quick links list and it just went from there. one game after another went on my System and I never seemed to get bored of them no matter how boring some of them were. then my old pc broak down, and getting my second pc was sort of a turning Point with me and gaming because on my old pc I had some weird security Feature that didnt allow me to Register anywhere. that was disabled on the new pc and I started playing browser games and registered on the Forum at about 2010. some of you guys might remember, my english was horrible! But at least I started learning and found games that ither werent in the quick links or that couldnt be downloaded from there any more. so I found the jedi quake star wars mod and because I had never played a full multyplayer Audio game before, natchurally I got hooked and spent nearly all my time on there. because I was still in elementary School time was what I had a lot of. okay, this Topic is about my first games but Ive all ready started, so might as well carry on. So with about 10 years old I got into what you guys would call middleschool, so I had less time to Play games. My Highlight for that year was bk2, swamp and rtr. those were the 3 games that I played most of the time. next year it was still swamp and bk2 and at the end, bk3. the rest is recent enough for you guys to know.

Re: What Was the First AudioGame you Ever played?

Interesting, all of you. Yeah before I heard about audiogames.net from my friend Ernesto, a few years ago and before I actually got my own personal computer and around the time I actually started looking around for those games, My mom had been wondering if accessible games even existed, and we all looked for them. The funny thing is, I didnt even know that it was possible to find blind accessible games until I was 11. Lol!That being said, I missed out on most of the classics, drive was definitely not something I ever played, neither was the curb game, though I remember trying to aquire both from the database several yearss ago. It used to be, I would search the quick links, skipping over all the rest of the stuff on the site. In fact, Im not really sure how or why I decided to hit communityforum... just happened so.

Re: What Was the First AudioGame you Ever played?

Interesting - my dad actually discovered Jim Kitchens games. I used to play these EA sports games; the gameplay itself was accessible, however you had to click with the mouse to get through the menus. So I kept asking my family members to help me with these menus. Naturally they got tired of it, so my dad seemed rather relieved when he found these games I could play entirely by myself. I gradually became bored with them and returned to the mainstream sports games. I believe I only discovered this site in 2010 and after a while, the forum and the community. I dont really play that many games these days (perhaps its a phase Im going through) but I still enjoy coming on here, reading all the posts and seeing what the new releases room has to offer.

I remember the games before audiogames became a big thing... the first accessible games made by Robert Betz I think his name was, which were essentially just recreations of card and board games with a copy of eloquence bundled together to read the GUI. Those were the days and probably my first real examples of games for the blind. lol

Re: What Was the First AudioGame you Ever played?

I think weve had topics like this before, but hay another one doesnt matter. As I said before I was playing graphical games with my limited vision sinse about the age of four or so, right back on an old atari and through the 16 bit era, having lots of fun with games like super Metroid, Mega man X and marrio. unfortunately though when things went all 32 bit and 3D the number of games I could play fell down to almost none (literally just beatemups). Id never actually considered playing games on a pc sinse my laptop had only ever been a device for school work, games went on game consoles, however as I got online in the early 2000s I ran across browser games like legend of the green dragon, ashes of Angels and in 2004 the original Sryth, not to mention quite a bit of interactive fiction. I did find some references to audio games, but to be honest the idea behind them didnt interest me, I assumed they were symplistic and aimed purely at
;blind people, and would not be up to the standard of anything I was used to from consoles. In 2005 On the Sryth forum I ran into Bryan P who told me about Shades of Doom, and in a way it was lucky that he did sinse had I seen something like the Bsc games first I probably wouldve! assumed audio games werent worth my time. However first person shooters were a type of game which I couldnt play graphically, sinse they were too 3D can complex for my vision to handle, and as I had friends who were fans of the doom series that enspired shades I definitely fancied the idea. After playing, and then buying shades of doom in 2006, I then decided audio games were probably well worth my time and then literally played nearly everything in what was then the database, which was also possible given that for various complicated reasons I had close to a year when I had no academic work to do at all. Then in 2007 I was asked to take up news posting, a
nd in late 2009 I asked Sander to take on managing the database, and the rest as they say is history.

There actually are readme files... and if you dump them in google translate, you can figure it out. the BK series has tutorials that are ingame, so does shadow line. Trust me, none of us just played them by mashing buttons... those games are complex enough that you cant get away with doing that. Troopanum was a big thing in the early 2000s.

The first audiogame I ever played was Blast Chamber, demo. Back then, it was strange playing audio games. I didnt have a screen reader on the computer I was using, and BSC Games thought I did, so it was almost impossible to register the game. Also, playing the game seemed almost impossible, since I had to have someone read the documentation to me, which they didnt do, so I listened to the audio tutorial. After listening to that, I was able to get the regular fix the pipes levels down, but I didnt understand how to kill rats, how to play the electricity levels, and the bonus round. After that, I started playing Troopanum 2, also demo. I got that down quickly, but I was only able to play once before it expired because the computer I was using was my grandmas. After about a year of talking with the BSC Games people, we were able to register the games and play them. However, even today I still dont understand the electricity levels in Pipe 2, or the Gorbi
an ships and moon rocks in Troopanum 2.

After playing those, I became very interested in those games and wondered if there was more out there like those. I began researching and came across audiogames.net and bscgames.com. The first audiogames that I found back in 2008 or 2009 were blast chamber, troopinum, and all the other bsc games. Those are what really got me interested. From there, it progressed into what I play now, such as rpgs like entombed, action games like q9, and muds like alter aeon, and many other games like bk2 and bk3.

However, Ill still break out the river raiders, death match, bop it ultimate, ultra power, top speed, shades of doom from time to time (that list being ordered most to least frequent). As for Paladin of the sky I really dont think Ill buy that, because I just recently purchased upgrades for my website and now will be paying a total of $56 per year for them but Im going to look into a job next year so buying
games will become more of a possibility.@Jaybird shades of doom early alpha? Man Id like to get my hands on it! The only thing I have is a demo of the latest version, and I blew up myself with 2 different mines on This podcast episode But still it is a very fun game.
