325xi;186512 Wrote: To summarise the overwhelming response - Toslink works according to specification, which no inherent production flaws, so there's no reason to avoid it, or even better, use coax only when Toslink isn't available. I didn't miss anything, right? Toslink works by shining an LED along a length of cable, which is then received by a phototransistor at the other end. The signal from this phototransistor is likely to be smaller and have less clearly defined on/off edges than the signal received at the end of a coax cable. Therefore, it is not unlikely that jitter at the input to the clock recovery circuit will be worse, and that in turn may mean that jitter at the DAC chip (where it matters) is also worse. Now the next step. Few mentioned here that quality of optical connector can cause problems. Any advise of how to discern a good quality optical cable from something with cheap flaky connectors? Is it a matter of particular brands, or whatever else? I presume I can't evaluate quality just by looking at the cable or its price tag, right? The connector in an optical cable doesn't really make any difference - it's just a mechanical thing designed to hold the fibre in place so that the light coming out of the end shines onto the phototransistor. I seriously doubt there's any performance difference at all between connectors - it's not like in an electronic system where the connector is actually a part of the signal path. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Sonos with Transporter
I'm thinking about getting a Transporter to use with a Sonos ZP80. The plan is to use a Sonos hanheld controller and the ZP80 will output digital signal to the digital in on the Transporter. The Transporter is mainly going to be used as an external DAC (and potentially as a player for non-16bit music). Does this set up make sense? Would just using the Transporter both as the player and the DAC yield better sound than the Sonos/Transporter combination? The transporter is going to be feeding analog signal into an Anthem AVM50 pre-amp followed by an Anthem Statement A5 amplifier. Music files are in AIFF stored on an Infrant ReadyNAS, all connected via a home giga-Ethernet. I'd appreciate your input. Are there flaws for such combination (Sonos ZP80 plus Transporter)? I really like the multi-room feature of the Sonos. Thanks. The SB3/DAC combination has to send the digital signal from the SB3 to the DAC over S/PDIF, and therefore is subject to jitter potential inherent in S/PDIF. The Transporter alone does not use S/PDIF and its architecture should have less potential for jitter. If you go with the ZP80/Transporter, you would be be subject to the same S/PDIF jitter potential. You would not be getting the benefit of the Transporter's closely-coupled architecture, and you would pay more than you need to to get a comparable DAC. Now, whether you personally can hear the difference among any of these alternatives we do not know. Personally, if I were to spend $2k on a Transporter I would use it for transport and DAC. If I already had decided on a transport and I wanted a better DAC, I would find a DAC that I like for much less than $2k. -- jeffmeh jeffmeh's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3986 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33454 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I don't have a Transporter, but in my opinion you fit the target market of slim devices perfectly. You can have the multi-room capability, like Cardinal Fang mentioned, by using the Nokia internet tablet or similar as a remote anywhere in the house, or from the coffee shop for that matter. Rooms where sound quality isn't important get an Sb3 hooked to powered speakers or similar. It seems like you've pretty much decided on the Transporter, so if you go with the SonosSD approach, I would make sure the ZP isn't doing anything to the digital output like volume control or replay gain, before feeding it to a transporter. I would also compare the SPDIF out of my cd player to the SPDIF out of the ZP, both into the transporter to make sure there isn't an obvious audible difference. Something from Transporter's description that may or may not be worth keeping in mind: Jitter (standard deviation): * 11ps at oscillator (intrinsic jitter) * 17ps at DAC * 35ps at S/PDIF receiver It would be easier, and more ideal, to simply not have the ZP to worry about. You would gain the ability to plug the cd player into the Tp, rather than the ZP, and reduce the amount of jitter seen at the DAC. The whole idea seems to me a bit like using the Sb3 to feed a Transporter, but I understand your affinity for the sonos interface and remote. Forgive me for side-stepping the question, but I think it would be pointless to guess without making some quantitative measurements on the electrical output from a typical Toslink receiver module. That said, I have made a couple of observations which may be relevant: - if you look at the end of a Toslink cable, the light coming out of it is fairly omnidirectional; there is no particular angle at which it suddenly looks much brighter than others. Therefore, it's unlikely that a misalignment of a degree or so would make much difference. - an opto-isolator designed to pass data at a couple of Mbits typically has rather slow rising edges on its output, because of the passive pull-up used to bring the output to a logic '1' in the absence of light from the LED. This would inherently tend to increase jitter - and a Toslink connection is basically just an opto-isolator with a particularly wide separation between the two halves. Second of all, you must confuse me with someone else when it comes to the so beloved empirical methods. I actually have a very pragmatic approach when it comes to audio equipment. I like to understand some of the theories behind it, but then again I am very open minded, and fully aware of the emotional element of psychoacoustics that go into it - then again, I'll put a $ cap on the emotional stuff, there's not a single multi-thousand $ esoteric element in my chain. I'll buy a cable that's a couple $100 mostly because it looks cool, makes me feel good, and the money doesn't hurt - but try to sell me a $2,000 cable and I'll be get outta here - I'd rather fly to Cabo for the week!. Then again, I think controlled listening tests are *very* important. I have a pretty decent ear for differences. It's simply important to know and stand to one's sound preferences, and acknowledge that better sounds for me may not be better sound for someone else. Often the resolution and detail is identical, but some aspects of it are presented a bit different. I'll stand to my prefrence every time, and if I am able to detect a difference every time (like between the SB3's internal DA and the SB3-Toslink-AccuphaseDA chain), it's what ultimately makes me decide on a certain configuration. I'll grant what a listening test like that doesn't prove is utter linearity and perfect transparency - we may *prefer* somewhat distorted sound that compensates for our individual hearing etc. Then again, the fact that something comes out perfectly accurately our of the system does not mean it'll make it equally accurate into my brain. I figured that all digitally connected sources should sound the same, and therefore, that I could play CDs using the DAC in my A/V receiver and they'd sound just as good as before. My old DVD player used a coax connection, the new one used Toslink. It took me about a week to realise that something was wrong. Music was boring, the soundstage rather flat and instruments hard to pick out individually - I just wasn't enjoying it any more. Sadly by this point my old DVD player had vanished at the hands of Ebay. So, I bought another one - a newer model well reviewed for its audio quality - and plugged it in with a coax connection. It sounds great, normal service is resumed. This isn't a controlled experiment, of course, but it does prove (to me, at least) that all digital sources are not equal. The same DAC and amp combination really can sound different when fed with a different source. Ironically it's the cheap recorder that's most tolerant of discs in poor condition, so I don't believe for a minute that bit errors are creeping in to cloud the issue. -- AndyC_772 AndyC_772's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10472 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33146 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I have one of these http://www.tascam.com/Products/hdp2.html and LOVE IT. It is PRO quality (better than audiophile, IMHO) as it will record up to 192kHz/24-bit on CompactFlash. Built-in phantom power for condenser mics, mic soft-limiting, external wordclock and video sync capabilities as well as timecode chase. However, I just played with Audacity to subtract an encoded/decoded MP3 waveform from the original WAV, so what's left should be the differences. Of course they can, but I will stand by my point. It is negligible without a highly revealing combination of system, room, speakers, and ears. I shall not claim it's audiophile, but it sounds and looks mighty fine to me considering the room and what I could reasonably afford: BW Matrix 802 mains center, BW CDM 1NT Surrounds all on Sound Anchor stands, Velodyne SPL-1000R Powered subwoofer, Carver TFM 35, Dennon AV Receiver, Sony DVP-NS999ES, Mitshubishi 65 DLP display on Salamander SYNERGY Triple stand, Pro-Ject Turntable Xpression Mk II fitted with Denon DL-160 Cartridge sitting on custom marble slab/spiked stand, Dish whatever DVR, low-end Nakamichi tape deck, Liteon VHS/DVD-RW mod for all format/all region play; mostly Blue Jeans cabling, Monster power supply. -and- squeezebox via digital coax to AV receiver. The SB sits seperate from the main system tucked in to recessed bookshelf. All the speakers as well as the Carver amp were obtained via eBay. Most of the time, I listen to the SB mostly playing FLACs ripped from my CD collection. +---+ |Filename: System 3.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2518| +---+ -- buddhabreath buddhabreath's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5743 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19817 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Not sure it has to be a very accurate system - it simply has to happen to be a chain that happens to produce a more individually tailored and appealing sound based on the particular change in the chain. Negligible is not a rational term - at least not to anyone that follows a forum under the term audiophile! A negligible difference to most is the *huge* difference to the audiophile!! At least that is the way I see it. I love the fact other people love the passion - I love to disagree with them because they do. :-) -- pablolie pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33146 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

A 20 Intel iMac dual 2 GHz with 2 Gb memory. External Western Digital My Book Pro (500 Gb) with my library in lossless. The new Airport Extreme feeding the iMac and the Transporter through the ether using Cable modem. All in the next room over or upstairs. Analog outs on the Transporter feed my integrated amp (The very nice VAC Avatar Super) I still use my TRL (Tube Research Labs) modified Sony 2000ES for some music since it does pull out a few more details when compared to the stock Transporter. Most of the tunes are done on the Transporter now. Except. Except vinyl. Vinyl still rules and mine goes from the black circle to an Ortofon MC25FL cart, using a Rega Planar 3 then into a VAC step up before going into the all-triode tube section of the VAC. The tunes come in via ZCable Live v3 and Kimber Hero while the tunes come out the back via Audience AU24s to the first generation of the Silverline Sonatinas. I also run these full range but send the signal over to a Rava sub which really fills out the bottom nicely. Power comes in via dedicated 20 amp circuit and an Elrod EPS3 sig goes into a Sound Applications Reference Line Stage to clean up and protect. The stands are Apollo Aria. This system achieves significant transparency to go with a dynamic sound. Very natural. +---+ |Filename: System.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2519| +---+ -- barty barty's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10121 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19817 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
