Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Power supply DAC for my SB3 - recommendations?
Here's a really cheap DAC that I think sounds pretty good. I got mine for US $130 new, but the price has gone up to $199 now. http://www.zzounds.com/item--BEHSRC2496 It has a DAC, and ADC, and a sample rate converter. I'm using mine to up the sample rate from the Squeezebox to 24/96 before going through the DAC (seems to make the sound a bit smoother for some reason.) Actually, I'm using the DAC in a DEQ2496, but it's the same DAC). The headphone output is not that great, your dedicated headphone amp is far better. The SRC2496 has balanced XLR outputs, but I use inexpensive XLR/RCA adapters (available at any pro audio shop) to connect to my preamp. -- kh6idf kh6idf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16848 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63349 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I do think that music streaming devices, be they made by LogiTech or by some other company, are giving the high end audio world fits since these devices all seem to punch way above their weight. Even the lowly SB3, when coupled with a decent outboard DAC, is capable of outperforming many mega-buck CD transports. I have the highly regarded McCormark UDP-1 in my main system along with a Transporter and the Transporter is very much the equal of the UDP-1. In fact, if it wasn't for the UDP-1's ability to play DVD-Audio and SACD discs I would have sold it awhile ago and freed up some valuable shelf space. Plus the Transporter has balanced analog outputs, something one rarely finds in CD players and DACs in the Transporter's price range. At this point in time it appears that the high end audio community is going to take the same approach that music industry is taking with regards to music streaming, music servers and other forms of non-silver disc based playback - give it passing mention but otherwise, for all intents and purposes, place their heads firmly in the sand and hope that these things just go away. Let me explain: First a bit of my purchasing history is in order. When I bought my Transporter I did not own any other Slim Devices products not did I own an external DAC, so the Transporter seemed like a nice simple, albeit somewhat expensive, way to get into the world of music streaming WHILE maintaining high end sound. If I had owned an external DAC I most likely would have gone with a SB3 and in fact, I now have two SB3s and one SBR - all of which are connected to some type of external DAC (two go to headphone amps with built in DACs and the other goes to a Marantz A/V receiver with a built in DAC. In your case you can always add an external DAC to your SB3 at any time and right now external DACs seem to be a very hot item with many manufacturers introducing cheaper and better sounding DACs. So much so that it won't be long before a SB3/DAC combo (with balanced analog outputs) costing half of what a Transporter costs will sound as good, if not better than, the Transporter. -- ralphpnj Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - Snatch - The Transporter - Transporter 2 'Last.fm' (http://www.last.fm/user/jazzfann/) ralphpnj's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10827 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63161 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

I was not aware the Transporter could output directly to speakers, but would probably want the option of adding a component if needed later on. Would Transporter Power amp Speakers be best option for quality then? Pat has already explained the bit about power amps and powered speakers. I'll address the statement that you might want to add other components later. Presumably you're talking about things like DVD player, PVR, etc. If these other components will have digital outputs, then you can use the Transporter as a digital preamp, and you can still get away with just a power amp + speakers, or powered speakers. If on the other hand you're referring to analogue sources (eg. FM tuner, LP turntable, etc), then you probably would be better off getting an integrated amp with multiple analogue inputs. In another posting you say that you're not sure what a preamp actually does. Well, it allows you to switch between multiple sources (it has lots of inputs) - this is probably the most important facility that many preamp users need. Preamps also often include processing circuitry such as tone controls, but quite a lot of people never make use of those. A preamp is likely to have a little bit of amplification capability - enough to bring quiet sources like cassette decks and FM tuners up to the level required to drive a power amp. In the special case of LP turntables, you also need a circuit called a phono preamp - some ordinary preamps include such a device on one of their inputs. Modern digital sources like CD players, Squeezeboxes, etc. already have a high enough output that this amplification is largely irrelevant - indeed most preamps spend most of their time *decreasing* the level of the signal that passes through. An integrated amp is simply a preamp and a power amp in one box. So if you only need a power amp, you can (a) save money by not paying for the preamp that comes in an integrated, and (b) avoid passing the signal through a preamp's circuitry (which, unless it's a horribly expensive state-of-the-art device, *will* degrade the sound quality to a certain extent). -- cliveb Transporter - ATC SCM100A cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63433 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

You are probably using powered speakers with your computer. ATC, PMC, BO, Dynaudio, Audiostatic, Martin Logan etc all make powered speakers. What is overlooked many times is the quality of the preamp, its much more important than the poweramp, but since preamp dont have watts nobody talks about how big is yours?, so all the conversation is about poweramps. There are not a huge selection of audiophile quality powered speakers, but there are some, and more each year. With a powered speaker, its trivial for the manufacturer to design it to be bi-amp or tri-amp setup, and to use line level crossovers rather than speaker level crossovers. And by including the amp, the manufacturer can make sure that the amp is providing exactly what the speaker drivers need. There are zillions of powered speakers aimed at the professional audio (recording studio) world, at prices from $400 a pair on up into $20K or more. I have just purchased what I consider to be my first audiophile system. I have had the bug for years (since college and don't ask me how long ago that was). The components I purchased are: BW 804S McIntosh MC205 Rotel 1570 I did get a matching center channel and rear speakers for home theater use, but this is what I will be using for 2 channel listening. The current weak link in the system is a good source unit as I only have a bluray player. I have meticulously ripped all my CD's to FLAC using EAC/Lame. Do you think the Transporter is the best match for my system? I have an SB3 currently and love the ease of use for accessing my music. I know it's a very general question, but what are my alternatives related to price point and value? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Break-in period for Transporter?
In the days of steam, I used to be a designer of electronic test equipment. In those days, all test sets we built were 'burnt in' for a couple of days at elevated temperatures prior to shipping. From what I recall, this was not aimed to improve specification, but to speed up the onset of infant mortality (components would fail) soon in their life or last for ever. The sets which failed had the dud components replaced and burnt in again. There is however an argument that the compliance of suspension components (cone surround and voicecoil support) in moving coil loudspeakers changes early in their life following initial use - with beneficial effects on the quality of the sound. I think that the two processes mentioned above may have become confused in the press. Now magically you have to 'burn in' your cd player. -- Andy8421 Andy8421's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16846 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63394 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Break-in period for Transporter?
Thanks for the replies, all. After a weekend that involved a good bit of listening, I'm really not sure I can pick out a real difference in sound quality between the two players. A lot of my initial impressions before level matching them were extremely biased by loudness. As it turns out, the Transporter is about 1 dB louder that the SB3 at fixed output. The CI DAC is 1.5 dB louder than the SB3. Both of these units sounded pronouncedly better until I level matched them using pink noise and an SPL meter, after which they all pretty much sounded the same. (There's a more noticeable difference between the CI unit and the two Slim Devices units, but it's still pretty subtle.) Don't get me wrong, it sounds wonderful, and I almost wouldn't mind buying one just to know that I have pretty darn close to the best that money can buy (I expect there might be a few in here that will take issue with that claim, but I'm not about to drop 5 figures on any single piece of audio gear anytime soon). Plus, I do enjoy its aesthetic qualities and feature set. That said, the SB3 comes awfully close in terms of purely sonic performance, at least to a point where I'm pretty sure I can't tell the difference. I didn't get a chance to do a DBT this weekend so that is to follow this week. I'm willing to believe that there might be something to the theory that audio quality past a certain point works on a pretty subconscious level. If I can identify the Transporter in a blind A/B test as being better most of the time, I'm quite content to make it a fixture in my system. Regarding the noise that my tweeter emits from the SB3 vs the Transporter, I did end up trying them both on RCA outs. No major difference between Transporter on XLR vs RCA. Difference between the SB3 vs Transporter as mentioned before, is very audible with my ear against the tweeter, but as soon as I got a couple feet away, I couldn't hear it anymore. Note that this is at a setting 30 dB above my usual listening volume. So, yes, the noise floor is lower in the TP, but I'm not convinced that it actually matters when I'm sitting 8+ feet from each speaker. Anyway, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed. I was hoping the TP would be a total knockout, but it's been a little underwhelming so far. -- dekaliber dekaliber's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9852 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63394 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
