Marc,
I use a Parasound ZAmp v3
(http://www.parasound.com/zcustom/zampv3.php). Not exactly tiny, but
at only 9-1/2w x 1-3/4h x 10d, it isn't exactly huge. Slightly wider
than a SB3 and produces excellent sound for it's size/price.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Linn Records now doing FLAC

2007-05-11 Thread Jetlag

An issue I have run into is having the buffer empty to zero during the
song.

I downloaded a Claire Martin 24/96 FLAC album which I'm streaming
FLAC-FLAC via SS 6.5.1.2 on my Infrant NV (1GB RAM).

I thought it might be a WIFI issue so I ran a cat5e cable to it from my
gigabit switch and the problem still occurs occaisionally. I will
investigate more and post any discoveries.

Slightly OT, does anyone know for ecrtain if EAC will rip XRCDs or
XRCD24s bit-perfectly?

Just to confirm, the 24/96 files play perfectly with latest daily (FW

Has anyone tried them on the TP? I am not home right now but I think
the latest TP FW is 31.

I'm fairly certain that no one has posted a setup quite like this yet.
I live in a modern condo complex (i.e. paper-thin walls) and have to be
quite sensitive to my neighbors as far as noise is concerned. Since I
get up very early each weekeday to workout on my crosstrainer and
always listen to rock music while doing so, I had to come up with a
system that would satisfy me while preventing a mob scene at my front
door at 5:30 am.

I own a Precor EFX5.33 that I modified by making a shelf out of
aluminum and spraying it with black textured paint. My black SB3 rests
on top of it along with the remote, and I use a pair of Ultimate Ear
Super.Fi 5 Pro IEMs. This way I have access to my entire FLAC library
which resides on my Infrant NV. I will most likely replace the
Super.Fis with a pair of custom IEMs in the near future.

janly,

I could not help but to notice the wood ceiling, walls and floors.
With those giant hornspeakers and SWs I am curious what kind of
acoustic treatment might be outside of the photo area?

Not to be offensive or start a flame war, but the reason I am asking is
that hornspeakers tend to sound quite bright to -my ears- and I would
imagine with a highly reflective room and no visible acoustic
treatments that those qualities might get exaggerated. I was curious
what you might be doing to offset that potential, or is it not an issue
with that particular room?

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SS going into PAUSE on it's own

2007-03-12 Thread Jetlag

(I posted this originally on the 'General' forum but since the
Audiophile forum seems to have very tech-savvy members I thought I
would give it a try here.)

I am running SlimServer on my Infrant NV and while in PLAY mode it goes
into PAUSE with no input from me. I have about 450 songs in the playlist
and have my Transporter synced with my SB3. I have “Repeat ALL” enabled.
The same thing happens with the SB3 synced to the TP.

Occasionally the music just stops playing. Sometimes it occurs after
15 minutes of play, other times after several hours. When I check the
SS interface on either my laptop or PC it shows PAUSE. As soon as I
click on PLAY on either remote control or via my PC or laptop it
resumes play.

How do I keep this from happening?

Details:

Model: Infrant ReadyNAS NV 4x300GB SATA HDD in XRaid
Firmware: RAIDiator™ v3.01c1-p6 [1.00a034]
Memory: 1024 MB [2.0-2-2-6]
RAIDar version: 3.01c1-p1

SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 11221 - Linux - EN - utf8
Server IP address: 192.168.1.XX
Perl Version: 5.8.8 sparc-linux
MySQL Version: 5.0.24a-Debian_3.infrant1

All music files are FLAC (ripped from my CDs using EAC/secure,
compression level eight) and kept in the standard Infrant
/c/media/Music folder. Each CD is in its own folder with the
corresponding songs contained in that folder.

I also posted this on the Infrant forum, submitted it to SlimDevices
via the Logitech form and just submitted a new bug report for it,
'#4821' (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4821)

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: FF or RW using FLAC?

2006-12-21 Thread Jetlag

I'm not even going to pretend to be able to tell. I'm temporarily
living in a condo with 0 acoustical treatment and hardwood floors.
Also, I'm listening to my system (which is out in the living room) from
the 'office' (off to the side) through a set of french doors. The only
discernable difference is that my NV is running a bit quicker now. The
SS interface is more responsive. I was listening to my jazz collection
today using shuffle songs. I've got over 300 jazz CDs so that was a
bit of a load for the NV since it had to do the processing instead of
just the streaming.

I have been bothered by very short dropouts (~1 second maybe every 3rd
or 4th song) which I assumed was due to a less than optimal WIFI
signal. I have not heard a dropout since I made the switch. So in
essence there is a difference I guess, no dropouts. ;)

Now getting 96% signal strength on my TP vs. before it was only 55-65%.
I can now adjust my WAP from 22mW (default) up to 84mW. Only using 55
mW since it is getting the job done. :)

As an aside for anyone else using a ReadyNAS to run SS:Switching the

unload the NV processor. No more music dropouts, quicker SS response,

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: FF or RW using FLAC?

2006-12-20 Thread Jetlag

My songs are all individual FLAC files ripped using EAC~Secure
w/accuraterip plugin. The tracks from each individual CD are ripped,
transcoded and tagged, then put into it's own folder (foder names=CD
titles). I'm not using cue sheets at all. Each track is a separate
FLAC file.

I have SS running on my Infrant NV (1 GB RAM) using the settings
below.

With these settings FF and RW don't appear to be working. If I click
FF it skips to the next track. If I hold FF or RW down for 3, 5 or
even 10 seconds nothing seems to happen.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Slim Devices Transporter?

2006-07-28 Thread Jetlag

In my entire collection, I've only ever had a handful of discs that
contained errors that EAC could not properly rip. Of course admittedly
I'm Mr. Super-Perfectionist, so you will be hard pressed to find even a
fingerprint on any of my CDs. EAC would scan and scan and then report
the bad rip. It did provide me with the exact position so I could give
it a listen, and on 2 occaissions I could actually hear what I would
describe as a sort of fuzzy 'click' or 'pop' that was not part of the
track.

Of course, these discs were the same ones that I had lent to a friend
for her party, they were finally returned months later looking as
though they had been used as either clay pigeons or as tiny shovels to
dig through gravel. I found a local used record store that had a
professional quality CD resurfacing machine along with aa young guy who
was very well trained to use it.

The discs came back looking like new and ripped without a glitch. If
you have a bad CD, I might suggest doing the same. The cost came to
about $3 per disc, much cheaper than buying new. This was after I
first tried 2 different and popular consumer grade scratch removers,
they were worthless and I returned them.

Oh, and don't even THINK about asking to borrow any of my CDs! :(

- Not for me, but it sure is pretty.
- Lame idea. Have the SD folks lost their minds?

I've been running this exact setup for some time. First with a ReadyNAS
X6 and now with an NV (sold the X6 on eBay). Works great and is highly
reliable. All of my CDs are ripped with EAC (secure) and compressed
into FLAC, these are fed via both wireless (SB3) and gigabit ethernet
(SB2) to my 2 SBs. I don't know Linux, so DIY was not much of an
option.

Easy, reliable and plenty fast except for when re-indexing my music
collection. I set up SS to do this at 3am when I am never using the
NAS for anything else.

I also use the NV for video streaming, as my personal FTPS server, and
for data/digital photo backup.

 I can tell! ;)

You have it wired to +S (sensing) and -OUT, that is not correct! The
S lugs are for voltage sensing NOT supply power. To get supply
voltage out for your SB, wires should be on +OUT and -OUT. Although
technically since you did not remove the jumpers between the sensing
and supply lugs it will work, it is just that the power goes across the
jumper than into your soldered-on wire.

I removed the jumper and ran 4 wires out to the plug. This way the
voltage is sensed right when it goes into the SB and I can set the PSU
to maintain 5V right at the plug.

p.s. mine did not have a varistor on the transformer as yours does,
you must have a different model.

EXPERTS: It has been some time since I last studied circuits, what is
the advantage/disadvantage of having a varistor mounted there?

Thanks. As you can read from my earlier posts I was using the PowerOne
and it was working quite nicely, I just had not been able to find a
case that I liked. We also do not have a FRY's here in Denver which
means I have to be sure to order the correct one.

I dug my PS out of a box when I hooked up my SB2 today, still putting
out a perfect 5.0VDC.

Excellent job on the PSU jabberwockie!

Is that a Context Engineering box? The 6016H-85B?

Also, you must be the guy who bought all of the remaining PSU's from

2006-01-21 Thread Jetlag

Hey, another AVS member!

You might want to consider getting an SB2 as they seem to be more
easily modified than the SB3 due to form factor.

I am looking into modding mine to include a new standard AV size
enclosure and internal shielded linear 5V power supply. I have the PSU
figured out, still looking for the perfect enclosure though. Once those
are done and installed, off to the modders for tweaks to the digital
outs (I don't ever use the analog outputs).

A follow-up,

I just found some instructions, they said for operation at 120V to
jumper pins 13, and also pins 24, apply AC at 41 (as I already was),
and fuse at .5A.

I will do some soldering and let you know how the voltages change.
Gotta run to Radio Shack to get some stuff.

One last question, don't both the SB2 and SB3 draw a bit more than .5A?
Should I fuse it a bit higher? How much?

Thanks again! :-)

I just quickly soldered a jumper across those pins and checked the

Now, to go find an enclosure locally that looks even cooler than

Oh, and did I fail to mention that I only paid $2.95 USD for this PSU!

They are silent.

This project will be on hold until I can find a decent enclosure that
will fit. Will not have another chance to work on this until Sunday or
Monday at the earliest. Hammond made a couple of really nice aluminum
ones, but just a bit to small unless I remove all of the components
from the base. I need one with I.D. of (minimum) 4 x 5 x 2.5,
prefer something aluminum and somewhat stylish since this not be out of
site.

OK, a couple of quick pics before I have to get some other stuff done.

Desoldered the existing wire harness, cleaned up the contacts and
soldered jumpers from 1-2, and 3-4.

Then, temporarily clamped the mains onto 1 and 4, and got a very steady
5.06 VDC. This should work well once it is done.

I read a few tips on the Infrant site specifically for improving the
speed of SS on the X6, maybe they will help in your situation.

I could not find the link, but it dealt with turning of statistics in
SS. This option is ONLY in the Infrant version of SS. I have not yet
used it, so I cannot tell you exactly where to find it. Perhaps if you
post on the Infrant site someone can provide more info.

Let me know if it helps as I have an X6 on the way.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] *CROSS-POST* ReadyNAS 600/X6 SB2

2005-12-17 Thread Jetlag

Sorry for the cross post, but no responses in the 'general' forum.
Input/advice appreciated, thanks!

I am seriously considering going with a new Infrant X6 for my NAS and
to run Slimserver.

1. For those that are already doing this, have there been any issues
or recurring problems?

2. My music is currently located at J:\MUSIC\_FLAC_DB on my HDD #3,
and each album is in it's own sub-folder. How are/do you designate the
music folder on the ReadyNAS?

2a. Is it flexible (i.e. you can name it whatever you like)?

3. Will it still read the sub-folders?

4. Also, can you update the X6 using the dailies, or must you use
the version of Slimserver from the Infrant site?

Thanks.

Any other comments suggestions would also be helpful. I am planning to
set it up on my Linksys 10/100/1000 network (wired), connected directly
to the switcher.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] nOOb DAC advice

2005-07-15 Thread Jetlag

Hi, first post!

I just took delivery of my first SB2 today. Unfortunately, it was
defective (nothing appeared on the screen, ever. UPS strikes again).
It's replacement is already on the way (thank you Slimdevices C.S. and
Kevin in Tech Support!)

While I am waiting for it, I was wondering what success folks have had
coupling it to an upsampling DAC?

I'm currently looking at a few different models but first wanted to get
your input.

The SB2 will be fed via gigabit ethernet from my homegrown 500GB
server. It contains all of my CDs in FLAC format, which I ripped using
EAC in secure mode. So the data is pristine, just want the sound to be
as good as possible.

The Benchmark DAC1, April Music Stello DAC and the Bel Canto DAC2 are
on my maybe list so far. Any other suggestions? Cost is a bit of an
issue, so no mega-buck DACs like the Philips/Meitner.

Thanks, Jetlag
