Just get a wireless router. They usually have 4 wired LAN ports as well. So use the LAN ports to get Ethernet to the NAS and the Transporter, use the WAN port to connect to the Internet and use the other LAN ports to connect computers, etc. Then the wireless portion of the router will serve the Controller, with everything else wired. 802.11g routers can be fairly cheap now, I can even find one here in Canada for about $30. The bandwidth is more than enough no matter what technology I take it when the only job 99% of the time will be to run SC? The main thing is going to be range. Locate the router as close to where you will use the SBC as you can, or at least put it in a central location. The WRT54GL is good because it has two antennas that you can re-orient or even replace. Many others only have one antenna or no antennas at all (internal antennas). An 802.11 pre n router may help because it often has more than two antennas, a more sophisticated radio module, and is designed to give greater range. However I haven't used these, and I think I've read a report or two where there can be problems even with these. Also, is it possible to connect the router to another Wirelessrouter for internet access? I connect to the neighbours router and I need a password to access it, can you store a password within the router? (I have permission to use the net-access ;-) ) Although you can associate a wireless router with another, this is pretty advanced. You can do this with the WRT54GL and the DD-WRT firmware at least. This is called WDS (Wireless Distribution System): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_Distribution_System It is quite advanced and not guaranteed to work, especially if your router is not the same brand as his. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] transporter Extremely loose TOSLINK receptacle
I've only seen two types of TOSLINK connectors: - proper ones with a D-shaped connector. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:TOSLINK.jpg These should push the door out of the way and press in pretty tight, not quite clicking in place but almost. If not, you have a defective receptacle. - cheap ones that are circular. The connector is made from a slightly gummy, rubbery material. The deformation and stickiness of this material and the fact that the circle is large enough to wedge into the D-shaped connector hold it in place. It doesn't feel as secure as the D-connector but it seems to work fine. If either type falls out then you probably have a defective receptacle. This seems quite common - it looks like the protective door is the weak part of the receptacle. It will sometimes fall off or jam. My A/V receiver had a door off right in the store. It looks like the door forms part of the mechanism that holds the connector in place - without it, the connector won't stay in. -- Mark Lanctot Current: SB2, Transporter, Boom (PQP3 - late beta), SBC (early beta) Stored: Boom (PQP1 - early beta) Sold: SB3, Duet Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60991 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Not pining for the fjords. Ceased to be. An ex-parrot, err, sample. So how can they be recovered merely by lowering the waveform away from full-scale? The samples would have to be created somehow. I saw something about FFT, and that's very nice, but they are still guessed/interpolated/created from no real data. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Greenhorn looking for guidance.
Does your Denon have preouts? If so, you have a nice upgrade path if you ever want to go to a separate preamp/poweramp like many audiophiles have. You may want to just connect the preouts to a nice 2-channel amp and go from there to your main (L/R) speakers. This will allow you to experiment with a 2-channel amp and find one you like at your leisure. Generally speaking, A/V receivers are often limited by their power supply, so you'll find using an outboard amp will make things sound better because the amp will have its own (serious) power supply. Often the A/V receiver's preamp section isn't as bad as its power amp section because the preamp section isn't affected by an undersized power supply quite as much as the power amps. To maximize this you may want to use the receiver's direct or source direct mode where it (supposedly) bypasses most of the digital circuitry. Plus, you can continue to use the receiver to listen to movies, gaming, etc. in 5.1. And when funds permit, you can use the 2-channel amp in a dedicated 2-channel setup along with a preamp, reusing the receiver elsewhere. -- Mark Lanctot Current: SB2, Transporter, Boom (PQP3 - late beta) Stored: Boom (PQP1 - early beta), SBC (beta - no battery) Sold: SB3, Duet Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55469 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

One really cool thing about this product is that it connects wirelessly to your home network so you can put it anywhere, and you don't have to have any computers turned on to get full operation from it, since the Squeezebox software resides on the Transporter. The NetGear ReadyNAS is not wireless as mentioned above, but you really don't want your server to be wireless anyway! That would lead to two wireless hops if your SB/TP is also wireless. This can sometimes work but often pushes the limits of wireless networking if you have a marginal home environment for wireless. Also note the server software does not reside in the Transporter or any other SB player for that matter, it's always in the server, which is why SqueezeCenter is slow on the ReadyNAS because the ReadyNAS is not a general-purpose computer. The Duet will handle 16/44.1 and 24/48 files without issue. It should play 24/96 but through dropping samples (decimation) and this isn't the proper way to do it. The Transporter will play 24/96 properly and I believe 24/88.2 as well now. The Transporter DAC can't handle sample rates higher than 96 kHz. Now as for where you can find this beyond CD material...it's hard. Hackers have gotten this material off of DVD-A discs and SACD discs (but this is a real hack, you have to essentially re-record it). There are two separate processes here - ripping and encoding. Apple Lossless doesn't rip, iTunes does. iTunes then encodes the resulting rip into Apple Lossless or MP3. Programs other than iTunes (dBpowerAMP for example) can also encode into ALAC. The speed of ripping doesn't influence the speed of encoding. In terms of encoding speed, there aren't huge advantages in any one format. For example, when FLAC was slower than ALAC it was changed and now is at least as fast. Personally, I don't really care how long ripping takes as long as it's as correct as possible. You can leave your computer and go do other things. Often those protected CDs take ~24 hours to rip... ps Phil Leigh--I have Let It Be Naked too and had no problems ripping it with iTunes! These protected CDs usually contain purposeful errors every 2-5 seconds. This shows that iTunes will happily rip such errors and not tell you. A secure ripper will have a problem with this because it will detect the errors and attempt to correct them, that's the point of this protection mechanism - to frustrate the user and discourage ripping. The idea was that these errors (probably only a few bits) would be inaudible in a regular CD player but that a ripper would stumble on them. Rippers who don't do any error correction won't stumble on them because they just play straight through like a regular CD player does, errors and all. Or are the record companies trying to deter the admittedly small percentage of people in the marketplace who are concerned about their rips not being bit-perfect? Shouldn't their efforts be focused on deterring the common user? They've abandoned such schemes now, but it culminated in the infamous Sony rootkit debacle. There was an early MythBusters episode where they spun a CD in a router - the high-speed camera showed that the wobble was so pronounced the CD was literally bending into a wave shape at the outer edge. This probably happens on all CDs to a much lesser degree. nicketynick;245837 Wrote: I know I'm not going to explain this right, but I'll try, in layman's terms (sorry, laymen!) You can't just hook the NAS/router directly into a DAC - you're still missing the 'soundcard' function that a computer (or the SB3) provides in translating the digital file (.wav, eg) into a *digital audio signal* (is this referred to as PCM format?) that gets fed to a DAC for 'digital-to-analogue' conversion. For example, that's why the SB3/Transporter have 'digital outs'. This is the digital audio signal that you can feed to a DAC, after the SB3 has already changed it from a computer file to a digital audio signal. Proud of myself - I think I've explained it to myself, even if nobody else gets it! No, that's pretty good! Shredder - the Ethernet interface on the SB, the Transporter and any NAS is for computer communication only, not audio. It can be used to send Internet data or computer files. The SB and Transporter use it just like the wireless interface to receive the raw computer files. They then decode them into audio. What's potentially confusing you is you can use Ethernet patch cable to send an audio signal, but really you're just using the wires as you can use any wire. You're not using them as computer communication conduits at all. You can use the SB/Transporter this way, there's gear you can get to send the analog audio down Ethernet cable and get it back to analog audio on the other end. But note that we're not using the SB/Transporter/NAS Ethernet port for this, we're merely using the copper wire that comes in the Ethernet cable as we would any wire. For a NAS to be used this way, it would need a sound card and they almost always don't have one. You'd need a PC with a proper sound card. It is possible with SlimServer and Softsqueeze but it's not as elegant and simple. With a good soundcard and a Benchmark DAC the sound could be better than an SB alone but it will have a hard time beating the Transporter as the Transporter's DAC and power supplies are very good. Using the Transporter's digital out is a waste of its DAC, you'd really be better off with an SB + DAC or a PC + DAC. I don't see what advantages the PC + DAC would give you over the SB + DAC, for one thing it would be more expensive and could never be as quiet because there would have to be at least a hard drive in the PC. I've been accused of being a fanboy and I don't want to dissuade you from the PC (with soundcard) + DAC route, but in summary, a PC + DAC may be better than an SB alone, it may not be better than an SB + DAC and it will probably not be better than a Transporter using its built-in DAC. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40647 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Heat output and power consumption will both increase, but distortion increases too, and the volume point at which distortion will become audible decreases. Also an 8 ohm speaker is not truly 8 ohms across all frequencies. It can have some considerable dips at certain frequencies, so if it dips down to 4 ohms in places (not uncommon BTW) you'll have a 2-ohm equivalent load at that frequency, which will cause the amp to distort or maybe even shut down at higher volumes. 325xi;234370 Wrote: The problem lays in common misbelief that the best thing for audio is zero-distorted signal. This is correct for mastering, but clearly contradicts psychoacoustics when taken in context of end-user listening, aimed for enjoyment rather then evaluation. There are certain types of distortion that must be there for music to be listenable and enjoyable. They are not well researched though, but many audio gear makers achieve that in purely empirical ways. So many audiophiles suffer from trying to achieve two contradictive and somewhat elusive goals: to have reproduction as close to the original as possible in a way of using least-distorting gear, and at the same time to have enjoyable sound. It will be a problem for as long as there's no scientific clarification on the positive impact of certain types of distortion on listening experience. This is a very interesting idea indeed and would tend to explain why there are so many contradictions in this field. For example, tubes always measure poorly when compared with SS amps, yet many prefer the sound. Some speculate the reason behind this is harmonic distortion which is pleasing to many. The famous T-amp can also measure poorly, yet it has a cult following. Guitar amps distort pretty horribly, yet electric guitars have been popular for many years. Extremely flat FR speakers are described as being unlistenable. As a counterpoint to darrenyeats' observation, even live music has distortion of some kind. Room echoes, other people in the crowd, constructive/destructive interference from speakers, even the musicians bodies' blocking and interfering with the sound. I suppose the purest sound would be an instrument played by a minimalist machine in an anechoic chamber, and without even hearing it I bet most of us would think it would sound awful. Now I still say cables are the worst parts of the system to induce distortion. There's plenty of opportunities for distortion in other components. Cables should not be filters. -- Mark Lanctot 'Sean Adams' Response-O-Matic checklist, patent pending!' Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Million dollars to prove cables areworth money
Seconded. I am willing to accept there are things out there we can't measure but we can nonetheless perceive. Cables don't appear to be one of them, they are very well understood...if there were any small-scale variations that had large-scale effects electrical delivery systems would be impossible. Speakers on the other hand, are much more mystical/magical IMHO. They are mechanically and electrically very simple but you can't just bash one together and expect good sound. There is really an art to speakers, even though we've been building them for about 100 years now. Volumes and volumes have been written about them and basic designs really haven't changed but that still doesn't mean a company can manufacture a speaker that people universally like. There are things going on we just can't measure yet, and our brains and how they interpret sound are the limiting factor. -- Mark Lanctot 'Sean Adams' Response-O-Matic checklist, patent pending!' Don't tell me that if you 'improve' on that you can hear the difference. zanash, you seem like a nice guy but it's finally time to call shenanigans on this BS.
