That would be really nice and useful! The ability to extract the two
L/R front channels (or rear channels) from a DTS or 5.1 stream.
Currently I need to down mix the stream in my DVD player, which is
really not desirable.

A better management of the digital inputs, with dedicated buttons on
the front panel for a direct selection of the inputs. Or at least the
ability to rename the current inputs name. The use of the TP as an
external DAC is currently not so user friendly.

I would also appreciate some basic room correction capabilities.

I don't care about color display or touch interface or anything else...
I just want the TP to play music perfectly like a high-end component and
not as a computer.

Hi Christian,

I had my TP connected directly to my Classé power amp via RCA cables.
Two days ago, I upgraded to XLR balanced cables (with a pair of Endler
attenuators with -16 dB attenuation) and I noticed a sound improvement
in term of spatialization and high frequencies definition. This just
finished convincing me about the benefits of a pre-amplifier free
configuration.

As your power amp has balanced input, it could be worth trying to
connect the TP with XLR cables. However, you'll probably need some
passive attenuation...

I agree with dealer issue in Sitzerland; I had the same problem a few
months ago before buying my system. Finally I took my TP to the dealer
to test it with different power amplifiers.

Very nice speakers... Personally I wanted a configuration based on BW
802d speakers. The only remaining questione were 1) which power
amplifier to associate with and 2)pre-amplifier or not?

I read a lot of forums and finally decided to test by myself. I took my
TP and asked the dealer to test it directly connected to a power amp. Of
course, he never heard about the TP and was very skeptical about a
Logitech gear connected to a 10k bucks amplifier. But quickly he (and I)
realized that the matching was just perfect, taking the best from the
speakers!

Finally and without any doubt, the configuration without pre-amplifier
just appeared to be THE Solution, providing the best sonic performances
for the smallest price (remember that a pre-amplifier is at least as
expensive as the power amplifier itself).

I run my TP directly into my power amp (Classé CA-2200). It is now
connected with unbalanced cables - and appropriate -20db attenuation -
but I will upgrade to XLR as soon as my Endler's attenuators arrive.

Anyway, I can only strongly recommend this setup, as long as you don't
need the analog source management capabilities of a pre-amp. The sound
is just amazing! And remember, the shortest the audio path is, the
better the sound will be!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter into amp or pre?

2009-05-11 Thread ligald

Hi Dennis,

How is your Transporter connected to the power amp, with RCA or XLR?
What kind of passive attenuation are you using? I had mine connected
via RCA (with built-in attenuation) and I'm upgrading to XLR by adding
external attenuators (I just ordered Endler's ones) and I'm very curious
to see the changes, if any...

Regarding the high-end denomination of my system... it exist a lot
more expensive systems, of course. However I think that I reached a near
optimal ratio between cost/performances and I'm especially convinced
about the coherence and the simplicity of this system (the less material
you have, the less the audio signal is affected, the better it is). Hifi
is, for sure, not just a matter of costs... you can put together the
most expensive gears without obtaining any satisfying results; I
experienced this many times.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter into amp or pre?

2009-05-10 Thread ligald

Hi,

I just bought a new system with the Transporter plugged directly into
the power amplifier and I can only highly encourage you to do the same.
Having a high-end system, the result is simply superb! The shortest is
the signal path, the better is the sound quality. Furthermore you'll
save the extra amount of money for the pre-amplifier (which generally
costs more than the power amplifier itself).

My advise: do not hesitate one second and skip the pre-amplifier.
However, you just have to be careful with the sensitivity matching
between the transporter and the amplifier which may require some passive
attenuation (use the built-in jumpers of the Transporter if you use RCA
cables, external attenuators if XLR).

Good luck. Ligald

Hi,

Before buying my final setup, I was really interested in Parasound and
I auditioned the combo A21/P3; I was really disappointed.

As the A21 really has an excellent reputation, I think that the problem
came from the pre-amplifier. This experience definitively convinced me
to go into a pre-amplifier free configuration.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Help with ampmatching - are these specs ok?

2009-03-23 Thread ligald

Hi,

The matching between the TP output and the amp input is really
important. The relation is the following:

Pmax = Umax * Umax /R

The specs rate the full power of the amp Pmax = 250 W @ Umax = 33 Vrms
= 1.6*20 Vrms

By driving the amp directly from the TP (without analogue attenuation),
you'll have to apply digital volume attenuation to avoid providing
higher voltage than 1.6 Vrms

If you add -10db analogue attenuation (by changing the internal jumper
settings), you limit the output voltage to 0.6 Vrms. You'll therefore
provide a maximum of 0.6*20 = 12 Vrms (instead of 33 Vrms) which will
limit your maximal output power to 35 W.

If this is not powerfull enough, you may prefer external attenuators of
-6db (= 100 W) in order to get a better match.

I hope this was clear. The shortest audio path is better and adding a
pre-amp will just be worst as you'll add additional gain.

Good luck

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] The best power-amplifier for Logitech's Transporter?

Hi,

I made a listening test yesterday by my local BW dealer. We plugged
the TP directly into a Classé CA-2200 amplifier (with -10dB attenuation
on the RCA outputs)and the result was just amazing. The dealer never
heard about the TP before and told me that it was really impressed and
that was a winning combo.

This experience definitively convinced me to skip the preamp in any
high-end installation. This will provides the shortest audio path and
consequently, the purest sound.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] The best power-amplifier for Logitech's Transporter?

2009-03-03 Thread ligald

Hi,

Should be fine. Try first to connect the TP with the unbalanced outputs
(RCA) and add -10dB attenuation by changing the jumper position
internally in the TP. This will lower your output voltage from 2Vrms to
0.6 Vrms (~1/3) and avoid any problem. If the volume is loud enough,
this is fine and keep it this way; you can then adjust the volume for
your daily use with the digital control. If it is still much too loud,
try with -20dB. Otherwise, put the jumpers back (attenuation 0dB).

BTW, I intend to purchase an amps with the same specs (Parasound A21)
which provides adjustable gain control. I'll also connect my TP
directly into it.

Good luck. Ligald

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter balanced outputs

2009-02-22 Thread ligald

Hello,

I'm very interested in purchasing a new power amplifier and I'm
considering the Parasound A21. I'm wondering about the best matching
between this amp (which has both balanced and unbalanced inputs) and
the Transporter. In order to get the shortest audio path, the ultimate
solution would theoretically be to drive the amp directly form the
TP(skipping the pre-amp) with the balanced connectors, by eventually
adding an attenuator.

However is it possible to control the balanced output level with the
digital control of the TP or is the level fixed to 3Vrms?

Anyone having a power amp driven directly by the TP? What would be your
advice.

Thanks.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] The best power-amplifier for Logitech's Transporter?

2009-02-22 Thread ligald

Hi,

Regarding the amp sensitivity, you recommends a sensitivity lower than
1.5V. Why lower is better?

I understand that you want avoiding a sensitivity higher than the TP
one in order to benefit from the full power of your amp. However, for
smaller sensitivity, you will have to insert attenuator to avoid
matching problems.

The best case would not be to have a amp input sensitivity that matches
the TP output one (~3 Vrms for balanced output) ?

Thanks

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter balanced outputs

2009-02-22 Thread ligald

Thank you,

I'm convinced that the shortest the audio path is, the better it is.
The TP providing high level outputs, I really could not see any
interest of adding pre-amp -except for its switching capabilities -
which role initially consists of amplifying low level inputs to match
the amp input. However, you have to deal with the sensitivity
matching...

How did you managed the sensitivity matching between TP and the amp
input? You probably added attenuators with fixed or variable gain. Do
you have any brand/model to recommend? Or do you know if there exist
balanced cables with integrated attenuators?
