The digital part of the system is: Touch - Neko D100 DAC (- BAT 3iX preamp) - Rogue M-180 monoblocks - Vandersteen Quatros Right now I have the DAC directly connected to the monoblocks. Though the BAT adds a touch of sweetness and body (or bloat, depending on how you hear it), it tends to eat up too much detail. The soundstage is more realistic and natural without the BAT. So I'm looking to get a passive (or at least extremely transparent) preamp. The sound with just the SB digital volume control seems pretty respectable to me, though. I still like the BAT for its excellent phono section, but it hardly seems worth it to keep it just for that. Everything is connected with Bluejeans XLR cables. Anything in particulary in mind? A remote is a must. Also I'm stuck with the need for balanced connections for now because of the high-pass filter that the Vandersteens require (can't be used with RCA-to-XLR adaptors according to Richard). One that I'm aware of is the Wyred 4 Sound DAC, which has a 32-bit digital volume control. I'm pretty happy with the Neko, so I'm not that thrilled with the idea of yet another DAC, particularly as you often don't get to hear things in advance these days. Neko offered a free 30-day home trial. The preamps I've been considering are the Wyred 4 Sound STP-SE and a Goldpoint passive (which is just a switchbox with a stepped attenuator; I'd still use the SB for slight volume adjustment). -- Daverz Daverz's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21643 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

The Neko DAC has a 1V output, which is already about 6dB of attenuation, since most DACs are 2V or over. And it just so happens that the Rogues have a 1V input sensitivity. So I'm usually in the range of 60-80 on the SB volume control (-20 to -10 dB) for serious daytime listening. Unfortunately, Neko doesn't make this 1V version anymore. I do have some Roswell 10-dB attenuators (XLR), but I don't like their effect on the sound (too smooth). They also lower the input impedance of my amps to something like 10k Ohm. Well, any passive attenuation will do this, so you have to pay attention to the resistor values used. -- Daverz Daverz's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32335 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21643 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles

Receiver -- Naim NAC42 Pre-amp -- Naim NAP110 Power-amp -- BW CM2 speakers The Naim amps were made in 1979. I bought them second hand for £200 from a dealer in 1992. The last set to be sold on e-bay here has just gone for £360! Very unusual to find consumer electronics that appreciates in value over time. They were a total revelation when I bought them and it is a testament to their quality that they still sound fantastic today. Good thing I auditioned them blind, they are hardly beautiful! The speakers, bought in 2000 for £500, were more of a compromise between sound quality and decor (or more accurately between me and newly acquired spouse). Still very impressive sounding though. The decor was not helped when my son, aged 3, pushed in the tweeter domes! Strangely there was no audible change in the sound quality. However, I am sure I will get round to having them repaired some day... Some pictures below, not mine, but the same models and finishes. If I can find a better picture of the amps on the web I will edit the post. I have heard the Sim Audio may be the balanced way to go with Focal, so that is where I am aiming. It's good to hear some real world experience from other users regarding this brand. Helps make my decision a bit more confidently. Why don´t you just install Inguz Eq and use it to balance the sound. My Dali Mentor speakers sounded a little bright in the 5-9khz range. I tried a few amps and dac´s, none came close to Inguz for improving the sound. I moved the Rega and the top end is so much smoother, overall a much fuller sound and just as much detail. Best of all, for a lack of a better word, it's very musical not clinical. I haven't any DAC at the moment for my Squeezebox Touch, only the internal one via analog running to my Cambridge Amp. I do find my Cambridge CD Player to be aggressive as you mention with the Focals, so I can imagine what the DacMagic would be like. Clinical would be a word I would use as well. The internal DAC I find lacking a bit of air, if that makes sense... but I have demoed the Simaudio 100D and found it a very balanced sound via the Focals; a lot more presence. I think my next step may be to contact a pro supplier (such as Digital Village) to see if they know where I hire one for a couple of weeks to try out in my own room/system. One thing's for sure: if it works, then at 200 quid it's a steal. You can only fix a problem at a specific ilstening location using EQ, but in doing so you're changing acoustic response elsewhere in the room.
