Re: [Aus-soaring] Position Info

2014-06-04 Thread Mark Fisher
Hi Laurie,

It may be of interest to the community that we have just partnered with
Butterfly to market Dittolog.

We are in the midst of finalizing development of a SAR system ourselves,
through connection of a Flarm receiver to the dittobase. We have also
implemented many very useful functions for a club.

I hope subscribers here dont mind me giving a quick description of what we
are up to with dittolog.

We have greatly restructured the cost of Dittolog. People found the
hardware costs prohibitive, even though a Dittolog device for an aircraft
was way less than Flarm , and it contained basically the same building
blocks.

There were also some who found the 50cents per flight to expensive.

Funnily enough, in Europe, they rather charge a levy per member per year.
Our new cost structure is roughly as follows

A dittolog device is roughly Euro99 for an aircraft
A DittBase for your club house is now Euro299

We charge a flat fee of Euro29 per flying member.

Note that we do get takeoff and landings from ALL Flarm aircraft registered
on our site, regardless of whether they have a dittolog device installed.

Cheers
Mark

Buzz me off line if you want some code.

My altimeter goal (should one day I actually have that elusive thing
called time) is to integrate it as a service that adds to other services,
so you can take the SPOT data from the public URLs and put it up on
skylines - instead of maintaining our own maps -
http://skylines.xcsoar.org/ - but making it plugins so we could have a
simple CGI / HTMP Page that updates with just the “issues” (e.g. landed,
not home, or Help pressed etc), up to and including custom Google Maps
output (which is what we do at GCV).

There is a 3rd way (SMS you mentioned, and Public URLs I mentioned) and
that is via email. The email can also be automatically processed. Email and
public URLs cost nothing - but don’t do constant tracking, so require
someone press OK, or Help, or on the newer models - custom message.

[Aus-soaring] New Varios and a new thread

2014-05-26 Thread Mark Fisher
A response from Butterfly's Marc Forderer via Swift Avionics.

Dear Mike and Bernard

Both of you wrote us the same forum post. We would prefer not getting
involved into forums discussions. Her’s the (short-ish) answer.

We are using AHRS computed data to determine airflow around the aircraft in
realtime. We do this using our inertial platform inside our sensor unit.
The algorithms we use are based on years (literally) of research and part
of a doctor thesis. The horizontal component is wind, the vertical is what
we call vertical air mass“ (VAM).

The advantage of this new computation method is that horizontal energy
addition (in gusts) does not have influence on VAM readings.

We have a mixing method that allows the user to blend in normal pressure
sensor (TEK) based „Netto Vario“ signals into the VAM readings. If your
installation is not perfect (= AHRS won’t work very accurately) or if you
prefer not to use the new data but like your old fashioned netto better
(with gust induced energy changes), then you can set it to 50% to mix it or
even 0%.

The standard setup is 100%, that means 0 conventional and 100% AHRS based
data. We are very confident in this new technology and its fun to use. We
don’t use just some Accel/Gyro data and mix them in some way to tell people
its cool. Actually most users fly with 100%.

Instantaneous wind makes a huge difference to your flying, even if not
flying in mountainous regions where the advantages are obvious. The new
wind indication helps you to locate thermals or convergences in flatland
areas as it reacts to smallest local airflow/wind differences.

We have come a long way bringing this technology to the market and making
it available to many pilots in different aircraft. We have had quite some
troubles in the beginning, but this is not unusual. If you want to bring
new technologies to the market , you must know about the pain you will go
through initially.

We are thrilled by the possibilities the system offers and love flying with
it, our customers do so, too.

*Something you don’t have to write in the forum but its obvious:* Old
technology vario manufacturers love to tell people that it does not help
you flying or does not work. Now that its proven to work (ask people flying
with it) they love to tell people how difficult it is to install it. I must
admit that installation requires good care and some hours worth of time.
But fly with one, you will see that its worth it.

Cheers
Marc

Hi Matthew,
I'll see if I can find a reference.
Seems like Sam Gisiger from Triadis (Altair/Vega fame) , who builds the
Butterfly vario has cracked the nut many manufacturers have been trying to
for years.
He's a clever guy.

 The Bogus?

 Love it!

However there seem to be multiple reports from different sources that the
new glider will happen sooner rather than later. I was told that one dealer
 ordered 8 of them.

I wouldn't expect an 18/21/23 though as that might cut into the Quintus
and would leave them without a new 15m glider.

BTW what exactly is the Ventus 2axS that Tilo is flying in the GP?

Anyway my bet on the new name is Tritus. Maybe Tertius is better Latin but
doesn't read or sound as well. Maybe an outside chance for Volus?

 I guess we'll see.

Of course the interface is seamless, AND, you are not committed to Seeyou

One small thing..a V7 and Oudie running Seeyou mobile is a FULLY
SUPPORTED combination. When you run XCSoar you accept the niggles of open
source. Food for thought.

Re: [Aus-soaring] Club vario-continued

2013-10-18 Thread Mark Fisher
Hi Scott,
I agree! I use lots of open source software. However , a large proportion
of our aging population of glider pilots do struggle with interfacing from
a long list of 'compatible' tablets and their vario of choice. Baud rates,
data packet construction , serial, bluetooth, etc etc is not something they
want to worry about. Ask me how I know!
Of course for those with the technical savvy and a willingness to
participate, open source is a good solution.

Cheers
Mark

I really have no comment on how XCSoar runs on the Oudie, never seen or
 done it.

But the comment is about out of line for open source. What phone do you
use? Is Android more niggly than iOS? Maybe. What about Chrome vs IE? Open
Office vs Office? Firefox? List could go on for a few pages in 8 point font.

Quality of projects, installation, documentation and usability is not
based on whether it is open source or not. Of course there is a lot more
open source software, so you get more of all types :-)

the all information you need to implement it. Any club glider used for
cross country or cross country training needs a vario like this if your
mission is to train XC capable pilots.

DDSC and Kingaroy have club gliders equipped with B500s and B800s. The
B800 is a B500 with a log scale and many small improvements. B500 owners
may have their B500s modified to B800 or B600 (linear scale - replaces
 B500) standard.

We also make instruments (B300, B400, B700, B900) suitable as backups or
for gliders whose mission is primary training or local soaring. These
implement some or all of the climb mode features of the B500/B600/B800.

Here's what an aerospace industry professional who worked in cockpit
design had to say about the B500/B600/B800 (it was an unsolicited opinion
in a reply solicited by another manufacturer). When it comes to deciding
to leave a thermal, the Borgelt is exceptional - never look down, the LEDs
give you what you need. As you straighten out, averager/integrator numbers
are just out of line of sight on the Glareshield Controller and Display,
and its knob is ready to accept your MacCready command. As the glide
progresses the Borgelt's performance Index guide to bugs settings is
quick and easy. In the glide, the Borgelt's LED speed cues again mean no
need to look down. and A B500 with GCD was the last nav/vario I flew
behind regularly and, truly, my favourite overall. The combination of the
GCD and bright LEDs gave me what I needed without spending time
'head-down'. I am expecting the Brand X audio to be like the Borgelt
B500, but without the cleverly thought out duty cycle changes and
peripherally visible bright LEDs that give me the information I need in a
 different way.

You can send the data to a colour moving map. SeeYou Mobile, WinPilot,
XCSoar and LK8000 support data input from the B800 (or B600 which is the
same but with linear display and even B50s). However, the B800 has an
internal glide/nav/wind computer which works very well (including around a
turnpoint) so the colour map is mainly useful for a task overview with
AATs, airspace boundaries and maybe Flarm overview. You really should not
need to do much more than zoom and unzoom the display. Our glide algorithms
have a long successful history going back to the B25 glide computer in 1982.

We're working on improvements and upgrades to the B800 software all the
time. There will be another for the GCD shortly. The last one implemented
the ability to take the card out of the GCD at briefing and put the task
for the day on one of the databases (there are 10) and step through the
start and turnpoints with one button push at a time without scrolling.

*Dynamis, * the long sought after Total Energy vario without sensitivity
to horizontal gusts is in the final stages of development (it certainly
works - we've shown that) and will be able to be added to the B600 and
B800. This will be a must have for serious competition pilots.

Guys,

Have a look at zennioptical.com

You will fall of your chair when you learn how cheap glasses can be.

All you need is your prescription.

   1. upload your smiling face to the site,
   2. try on some frames, and
   3. buy the ones you want.

Delivery is about 10-15 days

They will do Distance, reading, bifocal, multifocal.
They have an online chat service to assist if required. Straight reading
glasses need a bit of massaging of the script values, but zenni will help
with this.
What they dont have is a high quality sunglasses, but they will sell you a
cheap polarized clip on for $6

 Hi DMcD,
thanks for the comments. However, as stated in the first sentence of my

I am always acutely aware of the fact that should I lose them, break them,

a long wait for same. The conversation with my friend re laser surgery
prompted me to investigate contact lenses as my thinking was that perhaps I
could wear multifocal contacts (or even bifocal contacts) and use off the
shelf sunglasses when flying, driving and fishing. Thus should any of the
afore mentioned misfortunes occur, I could simply buy/borrow/beg/steal
another set of sunglasses at short notice.

I have an appointment with a local optometrist who is a member of the
Cornea and Contact lens Society of Australia so maybe they can assess my
vision and come up with a suitable product, we will see.
As far as laser surgery goes, the option most suitable for me (monovision)
is apparently not suitable for pilots as it reduces depth perception so I
 have ruled that out.

As for interference - totally agree with Simon. Probably risk mitigation

from an unknown source that enabled false Flarm-IGC files to be produced
that passed the IGC electronic validation check. To counter this, a
security update to Firmware Version 5.8 is now available via:

 www.flarm.com/support/updates/**index_en.htmlhttp://www.flarm.com/support/updates/index_en.html

and click on flarm_508fw on the right hand side of the page to
download this file. This file will update a FLARM-IGC unit to Firmware
5.08 standard using the standard FLARM update procedure (via a micro-SD
card or a PC-based update). Note that an update to the Flarmtool
utilities program incorporating V5.08 is also available by clicking
Installation V5.08 on the right hand side of the same web page.

** Important Note ** Owners should note that the IGC-approval for
earlier versions of Firmware (from V4.0 to V5.6) will be withdrawn on 30
April 2013. This is to ensure that the possibility of false IGC files
being produced using the malicious software referred to above, is
 eliminated.

A revised IGC-approval document is available on the IGC and GFAC web
 pages:

 www.ukiws.demon.co.uk/GFAC/**approvals/flarm-igc.pdfhttp://www.ukiws.demon.co.uk/GFAC/approvals/flarm-igc.pdf

 or

 www.fai.org/gnss-recording-**devices/igc-approved-flight-**recordershttp://www.fai.org/gnss-recording-devices/igc-approved-flight-recorders

For electronic validation of IGC files produced with V5.8 firmware, use
either the latest Flarmtool program (see above) or the free IGC Shell
program together with the latest Flarm DLL file which is named
IGC-FLA2.DLL to differentiate it from the earlier file IGC-FLA.DLL.

For the IGC Shell program and DLL files, including the new IGC-FLA2.DLL,
 see:

 www.ukiws.demon.co.uk/GFAC/**downloads.htmhttp://www.ukiws.demon.co.uk/GFAC/downloads.htm
 or
 www.fai.org/gnss-recording-**devices/free-softwarehttp://www.fai.org/gnss-recording-devices/free-software

The above may seem complex, but Flarm owners are used to making regular
updates that in the past have been to optimise the Flarm Traffic
Avoidance and warning system. The difference with this update is that
it increases the electronic security both of the Flight Recorder
facility and of future downloaded IGC files.

In view of the important of this security update, please give this
announcement publicity so that current owners and users of FLARM-IGC
units are aware of it, and its implications. The Flarm company are
doing likewise through their normal channels of communication to Flarm
owners, gliding software producers and OLC organisers.

Not a problem when you are 30 years of age Tom. Get an old set of ears and
see how you go.
For me, I'd like to think pilots are flying their gliders with all their OWN
instruments focused on the job, especially when they are anywhere near me.

If it truly enhanced flying ability every comp pilot in the world would be
'plugged in'. Somehow I don't think you'll find too many admit to doing
this.

How would you feel about your instructor plugging his Ipod into his head
while training because it increased his focus ?

If you were working for me, your IPOD would be elsewhere.

How does the old saying go?

Most generalisations are in accurate, including this one

For what its worth, I've airfreighted 6831 lithium ion batteries (charged)
in the belly of 747's across the Pacific multiple times in the last few
 years.

They were wrapped up in a Tesla Roadster - which has permission to be
freighted in this way because its installation is highly safe and actively
 controlled.

My understanding is that the source of thermal runaway here is related to
loose batteries shorting out in transit - which would certainly be a bad
thing (noting that I've not read the issue concerned as yet as the CASA
carrier pigeon does not yet appear to have reached my office).

My point here, in practice, is that there is a distinction between LiIon
arrays that are hard wired into operational units under active control,
versus loose batteries (or batteries that can become loose) that aren't
actually being conditioned by active circuits.

I guess point is that saying that the article below implies that its unsafe
to run LiIon in your wings is a bit disingenuous without pointing out that
the energy stored in them is a tiny fraction of the energy stored in an
equivalent volume of 100LL or Jet A1 sitting in the wings of an aircraft.

The destructive potential of the latter dwarfs that of the former, and yet,
surprisingly, I find that we still seem to commit aviation in aircraft
powered by such a dangerous energy source as liquid fuel regardless of the
 manifest risks.

Once your wind full of 100LL is burning, its also a tad harder to stop it
burning than it is to disconnect a battery.

Strange world, isn't it. Everyone has their agenda, and seems happy to
find evidence to fit their presumption of the outcome before doing the
analysis (and I do not claim that I am an exception in this regard, being
 human).

 and/or

This looks like its just about to go into full production.

Note that its quoted as being able to run for 8 hours on six AA batteries
(or from a glider battery, obviously, as an alternative).

i.e. presumably the current draw isn't unreasonable.

That doesn't magically solve the economic question, but it does suggest
that the actual technology you require here (along with a Mode-S
transponder, I guess) is certainly available (or nearly so).

I must say that I find the notion of a combination Flarm and ADS-B to be
highly appealing as a safety tool. Its eye-opening (literally) to see the
thing the ADS-B in my Cirrus picks up before I see them out of the window.

As far as I can see, powerflarm provides only ADS-B in - that is it does
not transmit. Furthermore, 6 AA batteries have significantly limited
capacity and certainly not enough to maintain continuous transmission for
several hours that is capable of full line of sight reception.

I don't know what the power requirements of an ADS-B out unit are, but they
must be significantly more than that provided by 6 AA batteries!

 Hi,

good news for Altair owners: Triadis has supplied me with an Altair
for development, it has arrived today. It came with XCSoar 6.0_alpha1
 installed.

John is back to XCSoar development, Scott has also stated he will help
with the Altair; that makes 3 XCSoar developers (outside of Triadis)
who will support the XCSoar on Altair.

I will check what is left to do before I can offer a public build of
XCSoar 6.0 (alpha/beta) for Altair. Watch out for announcements!

Alternatively, if you are using the Altair hardware I strongly urge you to

calibration lab - in other words, the barograph is to be considered exactly
as if it was a separate mechanical barograph. The exact process for making
declarations and claims will need to be confirmed by Beryl Hartley, however
paper declarations will be required, Lats and Longs of waypoints will need
to be specified (not just the name of a silo) and barographs will have to be
carried on any flight where a height verification is needed.

The official approval documents will appear on the GFA website shortly.

Please note that this is the first approval in the world of a Position

If you are in the market for a colour flight computer this looks pretty
good.

http://www.craggyaero.com/ultimate.htm

Run it with a B500 or any of the data output varios or just a GPS.
Neat input device and what looks like the best sunlight readable
screen around with full VGA resolution (640 x 480) twice the
resolution in each direction of most others.

I asked Richard about using the B500 without GCD but here's what he
said:

I would let the B500 control the software, as it already does, on the
Ultimate as far as bugs, ballast, MC etc., the ability to use the GCD
for
what ifs and see glide around two points is a plus and also as a check
on
final glide.

Set it on the B500 and it is automatically set in the WinPilot or
SeeYouMobile software.

Pretty good price at USD2500. About A$3700 landed here taxes paid.

If you don't want to rebuild the panel and want a cheaper alternative
the B2500 is only a little more than half the price.

Subject: Re: [Aus-soaring] Airspace - FLARM and MITRE

 G'Day All

A note about the purpose and technology comparing FLARM to MITRE and
 ADS-B.

FLARM was developed in Europe specifically as an aid to sailplanes
flying
 in
Alpine areas to avoid collisions at very short range (i.e. the
 recreational
parallel to TCAS, using GPS position broadcasts instead of
transponders).

MITRE was developed in the US specifically to have a means to allow
UAVs
 to
operate in public airspace with manned aircraft - so-called
interoperability - again using GPS position broadcasts over a medium

 range
to give an electronic version of see and avoid.

ADS-B is a longer-range technology, also using GPS position
broadcasts to
replace ground-based secondary surveillance radar for air traffic
control
purposes and therefore transmitting mainly to a network of ground
 stations.
Whilst secondary radar (including TCAS) relies on a ground (or
aircraft
 for
TCAS) signal to trigger an aircraft response, all the GPS systems use
an
autonomous aircraft transmission. This means that an aircraft can
participate in the system far more cheaply and efficiently than with
 radar.

In spite of this, some of the ADS-B proponents want to link it to the
 latest
(most costly, complex and possibly most error-prone) Mode S (for
Select)
secondary radar. The UK CAA is among these and has drawn a lot of
 criticism
from particularly the gliding and hang gliding community. There is no
 reason
why ADS-B and radar should be linked like this, other than the fact
they
 use
the same frequency of 1090 MHz. All these systems use wavelengths
around 3
cm to penetrate haze and cloud.

There is also no reason why ADS-B cannot also be used to show other
 aircraft
where a user is, and so ADS-B IN has been developed to display the
 position
of other aircraft using the technology - this is very similar to the
MITRE
concept, and to a lesser degree of precision, FLARM - which is
designed to
enhance see-and-avoid as well as assist separation. All of them can
also,
 to
a limited degree, allow one user to track another user (the primary
job of
 ADS-B and radar).

The frequencies DO vary - ADS-B uses 1090 MHz worldwide whilst MITRE
uses
978 MHz in the US, and FLARM uses 921 MHz in Australia 869.25 MHz in
New
Zealand, and 868 point something MHz in Europe. It looks as if there
is
 some
regulatory acceptance of FLARM for other than gliders - for instance
 rescue
helicopters in Switzerland use it as well.

So all the hoo-ha in the US is because NTSB - the equivalent to our
ATSB -
got it into their heads when investigating a few midair collisions
 involving
gliders and particularly the one the year before last with the Biz Jet
in
the Rockies that the MITRE concept would have prevented the collision.

 Hence
they recommended (quite impractically, since it is not intended for
production at the moment and is nowhere near a mature technology) that
all
light aircraft and gliders that cannot support a radar transponder and
the
TCAS technology should be fitted with it.

The source Chris quoted, The Examiner, has latched onto this and is
criticising the FAA for not mandating it, trying to create a media
 stink.
In this case, little more use than asking for automatic variable
speed-limiters on every vehicle on the roads, triggered by radio
alerts
 from
a GPS based system to apply the appropriate speed limit. It's
 theoretically
possible, but not technologically feasible yet even if it was
genuinely
 desirable and affordable.

Not sure if the schleicher representation would make a diference to the
scores, it should be noted that schempp were not represented in 15m at
benalla also, i hope to rectify this next year with a V2a.
Some scores may be a little slow due to the fatality of one of the
competitors pre start, very sad and as we know families are usually a
large part of the organisation of such events also.

Very exciting flying over there by the looks of it all.

I guess I can help with that question.
Go to this link on our website http://www.swiftavionics.com.au/faq.php

Click on General Flarm Questions and checkout the table therein.

Basically Swiss Flarms all have a micro SD card for flight download, and they
can also be ordered in IGC approved models.

Of course if IGC approval is not a requirement, there are several different
options that achieve the same result.
I have heard, but not yet had confirmed that GFA may be approving some
loggers/GPS units for flights up to a specific level.

Subject: [Aus-soaring] Flying on Mars

I have done some flying on Mars.

 Pretend, anyway.

I have X-plane 9 on my Mac at home, part of the flight sim is the
ability
to fly on Mars (with Martian elevation data and terrain to boot).

The main canyon (Valles Marineris) is up to 7km (almost 23,000') deep

Olympus Mons is 27km (88,500') above the mean surface level.

Hence the variation in air density between those two places is huge.

It is very tricky to fly.

The air at mean Martian surface is about 1% as dense as Earth's at see

level. The gravity is also less than on Earth.

Even taking off from the bottom of the canyon, your indicated stall
speed
and Vne are very close together (i.e. you are in 'coffin corner' for
most
 of the time).

Your take off speed is very near the speed of sound.

Because of the reduced air density, control effectiveness is very much

reduced, so turning is a slow process. Also, on approach to land, and
drag
producing devices (drogue chute, airbrakes, flaps) don't work very
well,
 because of the thin air.

Even slowing down once on the ground is tricky, because of the reduced

gravity, the weight of the aircraft on the wheels is less. About the
only
way you can stop is with arrestor cables.

Have managed to take off from the plain next to Olympus Mons and climb
to
the top of Olympus Mons, but it took several attempts because the
aircraft
 couldn't out climb the terrain.

I suspect thermalling on Mars might be out
(Unless you are very very small)

- A K6 with the right attitude in a side-slip will have the rudder
sucked into the max position in the same manner like a DG-500. (Does
this make the K6 a modern glider?)
- During my training this was demonstrated to me by my instructor.
- The suction effect (rudder lock) can be prevented by keeping
pressure on both rudder pedals. (This was also demonstrated by my
instructor)
- I performed a rudder lock and recovery as part of side-slip training.
- This was performed in safe altitude above 1000ft.
- I believe that spin training is performed in order to prevent spins.
- No surprises during side-slipping thereafter - I am prepared because
I am trained in the procedure.
- Side-slipping can still be utilised safely to reduce rope slack.
- Not all gliders can be treated the same: read the manufacturers manual
before flying the type (what does SH state in the POH about side
slipping? I reckon SH know about the decreased elevator effectiveness
and let people know about this)

On Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 9:27 PM, John Parncutt [EMAIL PROTECTED]
wrote:

The use of side slipping on approach with modern T tail gliders such as
the

elevator can result in reduced or no elevator authority. Another effect

side slipping that can occur with some aircraft including the Janus is
rudder lock.

These are obviously not desirable effects on approach!

For this reason in our club we do not teach the use of side slipping on
approach with any of our aircraft.

Of course many older aircraft can be side slipped very effectively and
safely.

Sideslips were of course, a common, almost mandatory practise on
approach with the early ES52's and especially with the ES57
Kingfisher. They were lots of fun, but fell out of favour (and
properly so) when gliders with serious airbrakes came along. I
have been occasionally asked to demonstrate a sideslip in more recent
check flights, a curious request given the excellent airbrakes in most
gliders these days - especially in the AS-K21 in which the directive
was uttered. (You want me to do a what??! Oh OK, here we
go .(sigh)). Personally I think they are best left alone in
most - if not all - modern gliders, unless of course it's a B-767.
Hmmm

I would have to disagree about using sideslips being a thing of the
past. Admittedly, I trained in the UK in the '60s, where small paddocks
were pretty common (and on gliders that had ineffective spoilers let
alone ineffective airbrakes) and so sideslips were an integral part of
the training I received (and eventually was giving as an instructor).

Even in Alice, I still sideslip (although with her lack of rudder she
doesn't slip too well in a straight line) on occasion to keep in
practice in case I need it some time. With full landing flap, full
airbrake and the max straight line sideslip, Alice's rate of descent is
high and the angle of approach is really steep (think clearing obstacles
and maximising ground roll space in a short paddock). I know that if I
need it, the skill/knowledge/experience are there ready to be pulled
out. I last used a sideslip during a busy arrival at this year's Easter
comp so I could land short and quickly get off the runway, out of the
way of a stack of traffic behind me in the circuit.

I would also maintain that we should teach sideslips - one of these days
being able to do it safely could prevent a marginal outlanding from
becoming another outlanding accident.

As a general principle, I believe pretty strongly that, with the
exception of full aerobatics that scare quite a few people, if there's a
safe manoeuvre that your glider can do, you should know how to do it
safely - that way, if you need to do it, it's part of your skill set.

Dear Mark

I have purchased the transfiller that MH sell - the higher
specification one of the two possibilities as shown on their website if
you dig into it. This kit makes it easy to fill if you have an
appropriate high pressure bottle to decant from. Amongst other things
you need to be the type person who can handle the equipment
appropriately, eg careful storage when not in use, etc., etc., etc.

Yes the transfiller costs a bit but then the cost could be shared
amongst a group.

Usually I get bottles filled by a suitable enterprise rather than use
the transfiller because I don't often have a high pressure oxygen source
at my elbow. Some of my bottles are 3,000 psi rated and to get 3,000
psi into them I go to Miden Medical in Tullamarine Melbourne where we
have had good service.

On the GFA website there is a webpage where sources of oxygen bottle
recharging are advised. This may only list the Melbourne possibilities
or it may have now been expanded to add some other states possibilities.

regards

[Aus-soaring] Pilatus 4 sale

2008-06-01 Thread Mark Fisher
Spread the word...

The demise of Summerland Gliding Club means that Pilatus GJT is for
sale. Fixed gear.

This aircraft is in excellent mechanical condition, a few cosmetic
blemishes, but all in all a very sound glider, and lovely to fly.

New panel installed 2 years ago.

No haggling $10,000. Open trailer available by negotiation. We have one
but no fittings built yet.

Just get in and fly!

Call Mark 0427127128

Cheers

Good morning All,

Back in the late eighties or early nineties there was an article in
Soaring Australia arguing that Clubs should charge 1/1000th of the cost
of the glider per hour.

Would anyone remember the article and, better still has a copy of the
issue?

[Aus-soaring] PDA Glide Computer Question

2008-05-25 Thread Mark Fisher
Q. I would like three good reasons why a bloke should pay for WInpilot or
similar when one can get XC Soar for free.

Not meaning to provoke a derogatory response, it's just that I notice a lot of
PDA users using Winpilot, yet XCsoar is available free.
ANy feedaback on other products will be well received.
I was wondering what people see as the pro's and cons.
I do have an IPAQ PDA so this is not a hardware question.

Thanks for excellent replies - a host of information.

I agree with Adam that the Zlin Z-37 T2 is a must have. At US
$150,000 it's a steal.

Arising from replies from this list and elsewhere I have two further
questions:

i) it was suggested we should be talking to European clubs. I have
done so with pommie Clubs. Does anyone have contacts on the
Continent, or know of relevant Internet mailing lists?

ii) does anyone know about progress with the Finnish purpose built
tug, the PIK 27? It can be seen at: www.windcraft.fi/pik27/welcome.htm

Thanks again.

G'day all,

The below story is still correct (except that Dad was 2nd by 70points), my only
addition to it was that the reason why Dad initially thought he may've cleaned
up is because his WinPilot was incorrect, and nothing to do with the scorer (if
it was taken that way)! Dads speed was actually 92km/hr off the stick..

The scorer, who I think, working with the webmaster did a sensational job.
This comp has been the first in Australia that I can recall that has had the
*.igc traces available for download each day - Nice work guys!

I didn't mention the WinPilot fault in the below e-mail as I'm all for
WinPilot. 9 times out of 10 in my experience, the speeds and data are accurate
:).. doh!

Sorry for any offence to the scorer, if any at all was taken.

WPP

P.s. Jo, would you be able to write something to the group about what was going
through your head, and how you made that massive decision?! I think many of us
could learn from it if we were to be in that same situation in future comps.

Just spoke to Dad, sounds like it was an interesting day to finish up
on.

Blue, windy and generally ordinary conditions..

After the task was completed, Dad and Georgo met. The conversation
was, how fast did you go?! Dad's response was 98km/hr, Georgo responded, oh
well, congratulations, you got me. 93km/hr..

Later that night at prize giving, the daily results were called out.

3rd, Georgo...

2nd, Robert Hart...

...

and 1st place for the day goes to... Bill Hatfield!

Dad and Georgo look over at each other, throw their hands up in the air
and expressions of something like well bugger me!..

The CD then moved onto the final winners presentation, Congratulations
Georgo, you've won Performance Class.

Dad said he's speach was short and sweet, but told at how he was
totally surprised by the result! Dad was 2nd by 40something points, well done
Dad.

I believe Jo had an eventful day as well. Dad tells me that she almost
landed out near Tara, decided to make a re-start at 13:45 (I think, maybe later
too), and managed to pull off a Day win to clean up Club Class.
Congratulations Jo!! Guess that decision came down to 'do I want to have a
chance at winning, or loose and stay on task?'

Well, seeing as when ever a ASG29 wins, 'someone' basically says it's
the ASG29, it is s much better than the V2, thats why it won. So it must
mean that the Shark is better than the V2 :( hahaha

Congrats Georgo and Jo!

Hi Folks,

I have just installed RASP (Dr Jacks blipmaps) for NSW :

 http://blipmap.walsys.net/NEWSOUTHWALES/

The installation is still in the testing stage but appears OK apart from
the soundings. (The Camden sounding works, but Temora and Narromine
don't yet).

On the graphics, location 1 is Camden, 2 is Temora, and 3 is Narromine
(the numbers are in white and hard to see, but they are there).

RASP is installed on a server owned by a non-pilot friend; it chews up
about 9GB of his download allowance every month, and utilises 100% CPU
for about 4-5 hours per day. Consequently it could disappear at any
time, should it impact his web server.

My thanks to Johnny Wharington for his invaluable assistance, and Dr
Jack Glendinning for the free distribution of RASP.

The Treo isn't such a great phone, but it does have a large screen

Subject: Re: [Aus-soaring] PDA GPS

Hi all,

Reg, if you can use the vario as source, then you get the vario
data(Airspeed, Altitude and rate of climb fed to the PDA with the GPS
signal).

The PDA will also display flarm data so ideally the vario GPS signal is
sourced from the flarm, fed to the vario with the flarm data included
then the vario adds its data and passes on the whole lot to the PDA for
display.

By the way a 2 seater repeater can be setup via Bluetooth link with XC
Soar and presumably WinPilot, so one only needs to supply power to the
backseat PDA, and it gets all of the mixed DATA.

E-Frontier have a 5 volt regulator in a 12V cigarette lighter plug, with
an IPAQ plug and a PS2 GPSIN socket for $19. I have pulled one apart and
built into a small jiffy box with the appropriate connectors. Contact me
off list Reg and I will be happy to give you a hand with installation,
or assemble at cost any type of cable you require.

http://www.efrontier.com.au/estore/product_info.php?cPath=2_8products_i
d=30

All you need to do is change the PS2 GPS socket, or make up an adaptor
cable from a PS2 plug to whatever GPS data source you want to use.

They also have a suitable PS2 mouse GPS mouse for $70, though a flarm or
a logger is better as they have a pressure altitude sensor, giving more
accurate results.

I am in the process of designing an interface box that has on the front
2 GPS inputs for flarm or Garmin or any other and logger, a PDA out and
a switch so you can select GPS from flarm or logger.(This is so the
logger can connect to the PDA for task declaration, and gives redundancy
to the GPS source). If the vario is the GPS source one of the front
panel sockets would be used.

The commercial boxes I have seen end up a horrible mish mash of serial
adaptors when installed.

I plan to use all RJ telephone style connectors, and then assemble the
appropriate leads. On the rear of the box there is a GPS OUT to vario
socket and a GPS IN from vario socket. The idea being that a loop cable
can be plugged in to these if a vario is not used. The idea is to mount
this in the instrument panel.

A useful fact, Volkslogger and Colibri are capable of using the same 6
pin cable, as even though the Colibri has an 8 pin socket the extra 2
pins are

Extra power pins, so that the first and last pair on either side of the
connector are power, the 6 pin connector only supplies the inner 2 pims
but works fine.

The excellent John Wharrington pointed out a wireless Bluetooth PDA
game controller That can be used to remote control the PDA, mounted on
the stick or wherever, costs $80, neat! See here
http://www.smartgamepad.com/

To the PFY(Dion), memory card is worth $15, no effort to load, he's
still making a packet, and do you think he's paying for the TOMTOM
software? It was 70,000 people making a living from EBAY BTW!

I have tried to get data out from an L-Nav with no luck, it only has one
DATA socket and no GPS is built in so one has to use that input to
supply GPS dataG

Before you buy Winpilot try XC Soar, its free and support is great!

As to the comment on Terrain colours, in XC Soar there are a number of
colour styles one can use for terrain, I suggest the ICAO colour scheme.

I plan to do up an article for Soaring Australia, with a set of Pinout
diagrams for the most common devices, but I need the FLARM pinouts, and
the Borgelt pinouts still to complete the set.

Finally, spot on Ross the Vario manufacturers have zero motivation to
help in this area, they would much rather sell you a new unit. Amusingly
I read an ad from an old AG about a common digital vario extolling the
fact that it would overcome obsolescence by software updates-which are
no longer available! A black box (no display) vario engine is what is
really needed

To maximize this sort of setup, but I am not holding my breath.

One last note, IPAQ's have no backup battery and if charged and left on
the charger they do not start charging until the power is disconnected,
so that if you leave one fully charged on the charger for say a month it
will flatten the battery and lose its data, even though the charger is
connected. I strongly suggest you make us of the full backup facility on
the PDA when everything is setup, so restoring the PDA is quick and
easy. The best bet is to have a timer on the charger that disconnects
the power once a day for 5 minutes, then the PDA will charge
again.(Great piece of design that)!

Finally, does anyone have an up to date Australia.txt airspace file, as
the one I have is 2004 vintage, this files defines what airspace is
displayed.

Phew, sorry guys, that went on a lot

It's a standard linear 5v regulator, using a 5v IC regulator, so it can

Contact me
off list Reg and I will be happy to give you a hand with installation,
or assemble at cost any type of cable you require.

http://www.efrontier.com.au/estore/product_info.php?cPath=2_8products_i
d=30

One last note, IPAQ's have no backup battery and if charged and left on
the charger

Hi All,
We celebrate 70 continuous years of gliding at Waikerie on Saturday,
19th May 2007. This surely is a great (among the best) milestone in
Australian Gliding.
We will see some members return - some who learnt to fly in the
Primary glider, and other's who learnt more latterly to fly in the
Twin Astirs - all able to mix and reminise. Unfortunately - due to age
or illness, there are many who wont be there to share in the celebration
- Joch Barratt, Ken Reibe, Maurie Bradney - to name just a few.
There will be lots there who can celebrate lots of gliding years - Ron
Brock, Laurie English, Max Pennyfield and Geoff Horword (OAM) - to name
a few.

We'll hear Martin Simons talk about the improvements in glider design
throught successive models of all types (gets Martin's books if you need
any enlightenment).

2007 marks the 70th anniversary of WGC. 2012 (just 5 short years away)
mark's the 75th Anniversary. We want to make this a big celebration of
gliding in Australia/ Look out for you invitation.

The Pelican has been cleaned and polished for the occasion. She looks
like she could beat the best. We look forward to a great day (or two).

There is a section purely devoted to gliders and accesories. The website will
be funded by small display ads from private
companies. Advertisements for the new website will be placed in Australian
sport aviation magazines including Soaring Australia.
Please place any ads you like to buy sell or swap any gliding related equipment.

I hope you don't object to my sending this message to this list. I am a glider

RE: [Aus-soaring] Skylark 4

2007-04-18 Thread Mark Fisher
Hi John,

I learnt to fly in GTC at Grafton in the early ninety's under the
watchful eye of Norm Milne.

GTC made her way to Keepit about 3 years ago, where I think was damaged
in a landing incident.

Not sure if she still flies.

Talking of Blaniks, does anyone know what happend to GTC. I learnt to
fly in this Blanik in 1975 at Kilparra soaring Club at Tennant Creek NT.
As far as I know the club is long since gone and the Blanik which was
then owned by the clubs only instructor (as was the auto tow vehicle)
may have ended up in Queensland.

Macca,

Ah yes, dear old GTB. You may recall we had it at Grafton for a while in
the late 70s. My most enduring memory of flying it as a young tyro was
spending about an hour at no higher than 1800', having to periodically
wipe the condensation from the inside of the canopy with my TTH. Grafton
can be a hot and humid place - it was like flying a greenhouse with 18m
wings that day! It certainly had a comfy cockpit. BT has mentioned the
IS32 elsewhere as an 'interesting' type. Dare I say the only good metal
sailplane to come out of Eastern Europe has been the Blanik? No doubt
many airworthiness bods in this forum wouldn't agree, given that the
ideal physique for anyone working on a Blanik is 4 ft height, 18 inch
waist and arms like an orangutan.

Mitch.

Thank you all for the advice. So what I'm looking at is a standard
glass glider. I'm 6ft (183 cm)
with fairly wide shoulders so I want to fit in ok too.

Could anyone who knows of actual gliders for sale like this please let
me know about them?

Thanks,

Hi Greg.

For $20,000 i would recommend something like a standard cirrus. Cirrus's

perform well and are still very competitive in competition flying. They
have a very good handicap. I wouldn't rule out an Astir CS/77
either.Just my thoughts

No proper answer but I can give clues. :)

AL-KO manufacture in Victoria, including brakes. They have a website:

I don't know if the brakes are compatible but it's a place to start.
There
will be an agent in your nearest large town. He will probably be your

Jorgie says anyone who is not Form 2 rated is the WRONG person to be
inspecting this aircraft!! In fact one of the purposes of a Daily
Inspection is to detect unsuspected or unreported damage. And a Daily
Inspector is authorised to certify a glider as Airworthy for one days
flying even if he doesn't know about a previous overspeed or over stress
 incident.

Think about THAT next time you are doing a Daily Inspection on a club
glider which has been previously flown by someone you don't know doing
 something you don't know about.

   G'day all,

I am after some opinions on what I should look for on inspection of a
glider which may have been overloaded or overspeeded (although
   neither
are likely). Hopefully knowledgeable (and/or opinionated I guess!)
   people here can assist.

One of our club gliders was taken for a flight including a loop. The
ASI was malfunctioning (disconnected rear ASI and resultant system
leak) which was realised by the pilot just prior to the loop. We are
concerned that the speed through the loop may have been excessive,
   though no flutter was reported.

I was asked by the person inspecting the aircraft if there was an
inspection regime for overspeed flight. After thinking about it for
   a
while, I have come to the conclusion that the speed itself would not
cause damage if no flutter occurred and thus the inspection is for
overstressed airframe components only due to excessive G forces
   through
  the manouevre.

However, I am inexperienced in these matters, thus my query.

   Thanks,

   Ben Coleman

This is the first time that GFA has held an AGM outside Melbourne and we are very

The Seminar looks to me to be very good value and worth every penny

There will be a number of drool machines on display plus trade

Hope to see many of you there.

Hi Jeff,

Have a look at http://www.ltb-lindner.com/index_e.html

I have purchased these before. They are
very well made, cost was about A$225 including freight from Germany, and
shipping time was about one week.

Rudolph Lindner is great to do business

You will need to get clever when gluing
this on your aircraft. Sikaflex works best.

Adelaide Uni GC

Hi everyone

Last November, Justine captured
several frames of Ventus GQH, flown by Cathy Conway, as she did a fly past off
our wingtip. Some time later in December we realized that every second
frame could be stitched together to make an impressive panorama.
See http://miztadave.kicks-ass.net/gallery/For-Sale
to see a small version of the pic (also a pic of Justine with a framing
suggestion).

Since then, the Voluntary Student
Unionism (VSU) bill has been passed and it has crippled the support that
Adelaide University Sports Association provided to the Adelaide Uni GC.

J and I are offering to sell prints
of the attached panorama to help raise funds for the club. The prints are on
quality gloss paper at 90cm x 20cm (and are not framed). The price is $75
each plus postage with all profits going to AUGC.

Please let me know if you are
interested in buying a print.

Anthony

PS The prints have 'Justine 2005' in
the bottom right hand corner (not shown on the small version of the pic).
You can see it if you look carefully on the pic with Justine.

Mark

The Irish Gliding Association operated an auto launch operation using
wire and a single pulley. Best they achieved was 120 gliders launched in
one day to 2,000 feet. It would be difficult to beat this in terms of:
-efficiency
-minimal skill of operator required
-reliability
-capital cost
-operating cost

I suggest that you go to Boonah GC and see how their pulley launch
operation works.

The form of the pulley launch system that you may adopt would depend on
things such as:
-runway length (height achievable is similar to a winch ie approx 1/3
times the length)
-whether you have lights at the side of the strip
-type of surface that you have on the strip
-etc

My neighbour saw my glider yesterday and offered to be the driver and
provide the launch vehicle for both of his kids to learn gliding (they
have
yet to part with cash and book a course though !) Getting parents
involved would be a great way to boost younger members to take up the
sport.

Deceiding on a launch system is a major decision for any club and will
depend on many factors including members previous experiences and
whatever skills and resources are readily available.

Please give the list some idea of the facilities and conditions of your
operation, members experience and other relevant info.

If you have any suggestions, let 'em fly!!
We'd be interested in considering all options.
