Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Amarante from Manadas, Sao Jorge on the Water Lily to Australia

2017-07-20 Thread Maria Lima
Hello Tony,

Although we don't seem to be related, my husband's gr gr grandfathers both
traveled on the Water Lily to the Goldfields in Australia. They were from
Ponta Delgada. They were about 16, and 18 and they traveled with their father,
Antonio José de Lima and his brother in law, JJ Borges.

You mentioned an expedition. Does anyone have more information how I can find
out more about that? I'd like to put it in the family history for those
individuals.

They eventually returned to the Azores and married their first cousins. The
family story was that they did find gold. They were actually part owners of
the Humbug Hill Sluicing Company in the Creswick area.

Have you been able to search in the Creswick and Clunes Register and
Advertiser to see if your ancestor is mentioned there? The minors took each
other to court for the smallest thing and as a result, I have copes of the many
times our ancestors appeared in court and their investigators levemente in the
cases. I also got information on their involvement in the Humbug Hill
company. It really helps to know about their life and struggles there. I got
copies of these newspaper articles from the PROV (Public Records Office
Victoria.). These are precious family history.

If I can help in some way, let me know. These ancestors walked the same roads.

Cheri:

The top of my husband's pedigree chart goes back to the name Jacome. I went as
far back as Sebastiao De Resendes Jacome (x Maria da Costa) in Santa Maria.
Are your Jacome's from there also?

I looked up the meaning of Jacome and it's "Jacob". I thought of Jacob of the

Liz,

One thing you might love about searching on the iPad is how easy it is to move
through the records and magnify them by making the screen larger. On the
computer it takes longer to get through the research - for me.

Maybe swe meone out there will tell me there's a way to enlarge the records on
the computer with your hand like on the iPad.

I've checked and found Reunion would work best for me
Since we have one computer (MacBook Pro) which my husband uses most for of the
time. But one can download the Reunion program through Dropbox to the IPad.

You'll figure it out and I think you'll joy the IPad. I love it.

Best,

Thanks for all the information from everyone. Yes, my husband is retired

There were no flights available when we were out on the East coast but thanks

the Facebook pages for the different locations so as to get an idea of how
often and where to fly from.

Thanks so much for all your good input.

Okay- it's probably a "dumb question" but here goes:

If they applied for a passport for one country, was it customary and/or common
that they would sail to another country?

I noticed there are pages and pages of passports for Rio de Janeiro or Sandwich
Islands. I'm looking for ancestor who went to America. Should I just skip
over all the pages (names) that are not going to America?

I hate to think I'll miss them because I'm trying to take a "short cut".

This is for my friend who did sent have much info on her family. It would be
great to find her ancestors freguesia in The Azores.

The husband was ANTONIO F SILVEIRA (anglicized tô Antone and later Tony) from
Fayal

The wife is MARIANNA PERRY. was PERREIRA "usually"
Anglocised tô Perry?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Passports for São Jorge

2017-05-19 Thread Maria Lima
Thanks Rosemarie. I started in Horta because the husband was from Fayal and
looked in 1882 and 1883 but didn't find him

Then I remembered his wife was fm st Jorge so maybe that's where I'll find them
and learn what parishes they were from

This is for my friend whose family comes from the Azores. It turns out one
side of her family is from the Azores.

2017-05-15 Thread Maria Lima
A friend asked me for help on his wife's Madeira ancestry. I'd like to help

Is there an equivalent list for Madeira like this one?

And Margaret, I'm so glad you received all this because you have always been

this information. Makes my heart smile. (Now the first wife left in Boston,
never to see her husband again; that was sad; she would have loved the Azores

Originally I had Francisco. Today I looked at it again and it looks like the

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Rezendes, Ponta Delgada - trying to track down source of US citizenship grant

2017-03-31 Thread Maria Lima

Dear Diane,

Yes we have this situation as well. Jacinto José de Lima, age 17, arrived on
the Moses B Tower in 1889 as a stowaway. He lived in Boston and worked as a
barber. He got his US citizenship. Then he returned to São Miguel where he
married. He brought his bride to the US. She was unhappy living with her
mother in law and returned to the Azores. He returned as well. There, she had
a son who is my husband's father, Fortunato Roosevelt Lima. He was born in the
Azores, but his father was a US Citizen and he was very proud f that piece of
paper that proved he was a citizen. They were very patriotic as you can
imagine by the father giving him the name "Roosevelt". It seems President
Theodore Roosevelt had visited the Azores and Jacintho must have been very
suppprtive of President Roosevelt. We always wondered about that and it was
while we were watching a documentary on Teddy Roosevelt a few years ago, that
my husband and I realized, for the first time, which Roosevelt his father was
named for. I hate to admit we had thought it was FDR and felt foolish when we
stopped to consider how many years later FDR was in office. (As they say:
DUUUHHH!! ).

But today we have that paper that Fortunato Roosevelt lima guarded and valued
so much.

So, yes, we have this situation - if I understood your letter correctly. Best
of luck in getting more.

By the way, as I've traced Fortunato's line back, his ancestors were from São
Miguel and then back into Santa Maria where the family name was RESENDES!! The
oldest ancestor I've found is Sebastiao Jacome's Resendes married to Maria da
Costa. They had a son named Manoel but I don't have info on him. Maybe we
connect?

Happy hunting. It's a labor of love.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name of child

2017-02-23 Thread Maria Lima
Hi Roslyn and all who have helped me with this.

  Thanks so much.

It took me some time before I noticed the names were above the baptismal
information. The name on that baptism looked like Maria at first glance but
then I started comparing letters to other records and started doubting my
initial reading. I've since seen the priest write the same name (Maria) more
clearly and close enough to this one to be certain it is Maria. Thanks so
much.

also one above this one and the M is different. Also, the 'r's look different.
The first letter could also be an "N"? Or a "V".

Any help would be great! Thank you.

Thank you all for info on Sao Matheus. Margaret, I'm thinking about visiting
the Azores and this information helps if we get there to visit these places. I
have one ancestor who died in the Casa de Misericórdia (or was buried there).
Was that a hospital?

Thank you so much.

I'm excited to get mine. I've been looking at the flurry lines and curlicues on

By the way, I've tried downloading the "Basic Portuguese Paleology" booklet

[AZORES-Genealogy] Twins baptized different dates and excorcisms

2017-02-10 Thread Maria Lima
Right page last one on bottom
I can't figure out what happened on this. Twins, barbara and JOSEFA: Barbara
was baptized 29 October and then priest performed some kind of "arch..."
exorcism
Because of imminent danger (?) then at the end he says JOSEFA was baptized on
the 24th in the house (?).

Is that right? He talks about in the house and I can't figure if the date of
birth was same as the baptism and exorcism?

Can anyone please help me with this?? Thank you!!
(The mom was 43 when she gave birth to these twins!!)

[AZORES-Genealogy] Obit of Hieronimo Martins

2017-02-05 Thread Maria Lima
JR: here is obit for Our common ancestor, Jeronimo (Hieronimo) Martins.

I've learned that when the couple has only 3/4 kids, look for one of the
parents to have died. I felt a bit sad to find it. Weird cause he's been dead
for a few years, right?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name of child

2017-02-05 Thread Maria Lima
Thanks, I went with Tereza after studying the letter T and "L" in other records
he wrote. It's definitely a Tereza. Whew, it was a challenge.

JR: this TEREZA is a child of Heronimo Martins x Maria Cravalha our common
ancestor. So far I found records for three children for them

MARIA, baptized 15 October 1667, page 0162
(Ginetes, Baptisms 1588-1677) (wife of Antonio Ferreira)

MATHIAS baptized 27 September 1671; page 0162

TEREZA, baptized 13 January 1676

I've searched into the year 1684 and haven't found any more children. I
noticed the three kids they had were spaced out; being 5 years between the last
two.

I'm going to look for obits to see if one or both of parents died.
I dont know if you already had these in your data base but they are our
cousins

My husband descends from Balthezar.

Oh oh- I don't think I searched after BALTHEZAR, there might be more children
and I didn't think to look (yet).

JR:

I found LUZIA!! Here's her baptismal record. This (I THINK) is the No 1
person in the Ahnentafel Chart you sent me.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-GINETES-B-1678-1707/SMG-PD-GINETES-B-1678-1707_item1/P43.html

If we're talking about the same person, then, you had her birth year as 1687
and that's why I couldn't find her at first. I only found her when I saw there
was a big gap of years between her older sisterand the next child. The
computer indicated I might be "missing a child", and what do you think! I was
missing Luzia. She was baptized 18 September 1689

Is she your ancestor or is ANTONIO Ferreira your ancestor?

Again, thank you and if you want the names of the other siblings, I'll gladly
send you the names and links and sources. Antonio Ferreira and Maria Carvalha
had a total of 10 kids.

Warm regards,

Maria Elena

2017-02-02 Thread Maria Lima
Hello John, yes! Thank you so much for sending me this information. My
husband descends through Antonio Ferreira, baptized 3 July 1653 in Mosteiros.
Your sheet has him being born in São Sebastião, Ginetes. Your marriage date
and mine coincide, as well as the bride, Maria Carvalha (o).

I was trying to locate the baptism of your person who is number 1 on your
sheet: LUZIA FERREIRA. But I did not find her baptism in Ginetes. Am looking
in Mosteiros. I want to figure out how she is related to ANTONIO Ferreira.
(Who is she).

Are you descended through her or one of Antonio's siblings. I found all of
them if you want to correspond, I can send them to you. ( you probably
already have that already)

As always, you are kind and so willing to help us. Thank you. Maybe we are
related ( well, my husband and you).

Nope- I see "Clara." Look at the opposite page where he write the letter "C" in
the name, "Costa". That's what I see.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Dona?

2017-01-12 Thread Maria Lima
I've noticed on records that the wife of a soldier was called Dona. However, I
didn't observe what rank the soldier held, though.
When my husband was commander of the 65th in Puerto Rico, they called me Dona
Maria. Which made me feel old but I've since seen this practice in my
research. (Whatever it's worth). So maybe (?) they still use it out of
courtesy to the office?

2017-01-11 Thread Maria Lima
Thanks Cheri. I was trying to find an obit for the first Maria.
Maybe they had 2 Maria's.

Thanks- maybe tomorrow I'll find the answer. Is just too cold to think.
(Although I'm not complaining about the Mosteiros records- they're pretty
clear.)

2017-01-09 Thread Maria Lima
Thanks Richard for reply. It's what I was afraid of. So sad! On the map it
looked like Bretanha freguesia would have been too far from the Mosteiros one.
So, I believe I've reached the end of the line on Antonio Ferreira (Mosteiros)
married to Maria Carvalha (Ginetes). Marriage wasn't in Ginetes. I found all
their children in Ginetes.

Really appreciate your reply

Does anyone know if people in the Mosteiros area went to another closely church
that be married in the late 1600's.

Their Baptisms start in early 1600's and gen their obits but their first
marriages don't start till 1701.

I don't know where else to look for a marriage record married around 1690. I
fear it's the end f the line here.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Is Father Antao or ANTONIO

2017-01-07 Thread Maria Lima
Although the record is good, I'm not sure about the father's name.Because
I'm searching for ANTONIO Ferreira, I thought I found the right couple. Then
I read the godparents and there's Antao Ferreira whose signature is on many of
the Baptisms at that time. The priest records that Antao, The Godfather
witnessed with him. Just not sure the father is abbreviation for Antonio or
Antao .

Can I get a second opinion, please?

Can someone verify the mother's last name. (?) It looks like Carvalha, (maybe
Cardoza?). After studying it for hours, I now see the father is from
Mosteiros (and that is the Antonio Ferreira I'm looking for). If the wife's

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with 2 names in Ginetes- pages of baptisms, no dates

These recordings were aN INDEX!!??! (?). WOW- never would have guessed. I
wondered what happened, and contemplated and re read the pages several times
over a couple of days before posting.

I didn't notice it was at the back of the book but I'll look again. Margaret,
you're saying I may have to find the Baptisms years earlier. I will search.

The good thing is we do know is that they existed. I will enter them for
children of the couple without a date. (For now)
Thanks for enlightening me!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Help with 2 names in Ginetes- pages of baptisms, no dates

2017-01-06 Thread Maria Lima
First time I've seen this: Baptisms are recorded with no dates. Almost all
names abbreviated like the recorder was trying to save space. . The only
other info is either the name of the godmother or godfather.

I found 2 children born to Antonio Ferreira x Maria Carvalha. The first one
I could not read the name of the godmother but I think she's related to the
father because the last name is Ferreira.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-GINETES-B-1678-1707/SMG-PD-GINETES-B-1678-1707_item1/P118.html

Right hand page-12th name down:

Margarida, daughter of Antonio Ferreira x Maria Carvalha- can someone read the
godmother(?). Something Ferreira

Then the same couple had twins- if I'm reading it right(?)

Right hand page- 18th down- Does it say:

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-GINETES-B-1678-1707/SMG-PD-GINETES-B-1678-1707_item1/P119.html

Manoel and Bras (Braz?) filhos of Antonio Ferreira x Maria Carvalho? After
that the priest wrote the same thing in almost all of the records- something
about "conmigo". (With me)

The priest must have copied a lot of names from some other record; names that
would have been lost. There's also a notation by a priest (I think) at the
end of the list. After that the record returns to the standard recordings.
(Thankfully!!?)

Thank you for any help you can give me

I may have to look for marriages to get an idea f years of birth. Bummer.

Wow! Margaret, again you come to my rescue. I never would have guessed the

Thanks. I thought it might be 59. Still can't find his marriage to Anna dos

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Meaning of recolhida no reconhecimento"

2016-10-19 Thread Maria Lima
I had a FEELING it had something to do with a convent or becoming a nun. I'm
searching for a Marianna, daughter of Domingos de Mello, born in 1741 and she
doesn't show up anywhere so the only thing I could guess is that she became a
Nun . But They don't always give names of family members. In this case they
did and it's not her:(
But I wanted to know what the "reconhecimento" was because there seemed to be a
lot of women in them. (In 1700's)

Thanks for answering. I hoped you would

[AZORES-Genealogy] Meaning of recolhida no reconhecimento"

2016-10-19 Thread Maria Lima
I looked on google translate and it has to do with " retirement". So I don't
know how this relates to people in 1745 or so. I seen this a lot now and
decided to ask if anyone knows something about these "retirement homes". (?).
Thanks

Yes that is so kind of you to share the information with me.
Thank you Linda.
Wow- that was tough living. It makes me think about the conditions of our
ancestors. We are so abundantly blessed today to have the necessities of life
and then some. I can't imagine how hard their lives were.

This is the second widowed woman in the same time frame where the priest

very sad considering they had grown children. I can visualize them in
rags begging on the street and even though it was so long ago, it breaks

there's a better translation for mendicante. Also, I couldn't figure out
where she was buried and wondered if someone could translate that about
the burial(?) please? Some municipal place.

2016-10-12 Thread Maria Lima
Linda, thank you for clarifying. Yeah, i saw those words, "that "she had
nothing". I looked to see if it said that in the other obits but it didn't.
And the priest used the word " VELHA" ( as in old? I wondered ) to punctuate
her status.

It saddens me that with grown children the mother would be homeless. Does
mendicante also mean homeless (?)
