2019-02-17 Thread Gustavo Martins

important thing is to get to understand each other, just like me trying to
communicate in English! lol!

Cheri, I admire your interest for our language. I’m sure you’re gonna make it!

For those interested, you can find some info on this page (in Portuguese):

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] I need help with this document

2018-06-06 Thread Genealogia Gomes Martins
Cheri,

I approximate information by time (dates) and by region (location), but by
name, which even abbreviated, I can understand.
Take the case of Pedro Afonso and Izabel Rodrigues, Catharina's parents,
from whom I was able to find the baptismal record on January 16, 1633.

http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-PD-SAOJOSE-B-1627-1640/SMG-PD-SAOJOSE-B-1627-1640_item1/P38.html

Catharina was the wife of Manuel Gomes, parents of Izabel Rodrigues Gomes,
wife of Antônio Martins Bertão, my 6th grandfather.

[AZORES-Genealogy] List of immigrants for Brazil, between 1733 and 1743 coming from the Azores, Island of São Miguel

2018-02-02 Thread Genealogia Gomes Martins
Hello friends of the Azores Forum,

I try to find some list of immigrants for Brazil, between 1733 and 1743,
coming from the Azores, from the Island of São Miguel.

I found in Tombo's Tower, lists of passports from the year 1875 onwards.
There are also lists of immigrants after the royal edict that authorized
the arrival of Azoreans between 1746 and 1748.

My ancestor, João Gomes Martins, was born in 1709, on the Island of São
Miguel, and his father died in 1732, on the same island of São Miguel, in
the parish of São José. I believe he migrated to Brazil between the dates
indicated above, his mother, Isabel Gomes had died before Antonio Martins
'Bertão'.

At this time, he would be between 24 and 34 years old, and in Brazil he
married Maria da Apresentação, a native of Sant'Ana, Mariana, Minas Gerais,
being the daughter of lieutenant Manoel Pereyra Machado and Anna Baptista
Caldas, possibly natural of Sao Paulo.

I found with the invaluable help of Margaret Vicente, great details and
data on these ancestors, but now I am looking to know the dates of passage
of this João Gomes Martins to Brazil, in what year this occurred, in which
vessel, in which port arrived, to explore this This trajectory of this
Azorean that generated descendants in Minas Gerais, between 1744 and 1751,
with 5 children born in Monsenhor Horta, Mariana, Minas Gerais.

Well, if you know of any migration lists between 1733 and 1743, I would
greatly appreciate the help!

A hug to everyone!

Att.

Olá amigos do Fórum Azores

imensamente a ajuda!

Um abraço à todos!

My father-in-law is from Ribeira do Meio Lajes, Pico.

My uncle in from Monte, Candelaria, his mother was from Criacao Velha and
his father from Monte, His paternal grand-father was from Sao Mateus and

I hope this clarifies some of the confusion.

You are right. The samples are from Pico and they are related to the
family of Senhor Manuel Martins. I think he also participates in this

When we talked he told he was from the Zona da Madalena (Criação velha e
vizinhanças) but his uncle and father-in-law were from other places in Pico.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Monte de Cima, Pico

2014-08-21 Thread Manuel Martins
The place called Monte, where I grew up, consists of Monte de Baixo and
Monte de Cima, the town sits between two hills, the lower and the higher
hill. I belongs to Candelaria even though it's closer to Criacao Velha.
In Monte there are places called Pocinho, Calhau and Mingato.

Who has family from Monte de Cima? I would be interested as my maternal
grandfather's mother's family is from Monte and I grew up there.

Thank you

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Flights to Azores

2014-04-28 Thread Manuel Martins

SATA flies to Ponta Delgada from Boston year round, however, connecting
flights to the other islands can be challenging, I normally fly Boston
to Ponta Delgada in the evening and then take the 9AM flight to Pico.
Everything can be done via the website I no longer call the Fall River,
I used to spent to much time on hold.

The return flight from Pico makes a technical stop in Terceira. In the
winter months I have to spend a night in Sao Miguel. Plan you
itinerary. If flying out of Terceira, it's a 1/2 less but it's only
available during a certain period of the year. Stop there and go see a
bull fight.

I'll second Cheri's suggestion of staying overnight in Boston both
ways. It's a beautiful city and we have some great Portuguese
restaurants and clubs that serve food.

The last time one of my student's went, they flew non-stop from
Oakland to TER. She told me her mom said that they will never do that

personal preference.

I think the airports that go directly to the Azores are Oakland,
Boston, Toronto, and I don't remember what else.

Starting sometime in the spring and ending sometime in the fall, you
can fly directly to the Azores from North America. The other times of
the year, you have to get to Europe and then fly back. Something
about the flight patterns.

Ed de Melo is a travel agent on this list. Maybe he has contacted you
by now.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Name help

2014-04-27 Thread Manuel Martins
Hello,

I hope someone here could offer some help with the father's last name
abbreviation for the marriage. What I read from the marriage is: Pedro de
Faria son of Pedro [Joao/Goas] and his wife Maria Pereira. I'm not sure is
the last name is an abbreviation or just Joao.

The ancestor is Alferes Pedro de Faria (b. ~1729 d. 18-Apr-1784) married to
Rita Maria Andrade. I found a Pedro born on 17/19 Jan 1729 son of Pedro
Goncalves(z) and Maria de Freitas which falls within his birth range
however there is a discrepancy with the parents names. It is possible that
the father is Pedro Joao Goncalves and the mother Maria [Pereira de

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Bizarre...but is it true?

2014-04-24 Thread Manuel Martins

Spoke with my mother this morning to confirm the story she once told me.

She used to hear from her aunt whom was born in the late 1800, if a
grave was open after 7 years and the body had not decomposed completely
the body was blessed by the priest and the coveiro (gravedigger) would
beat the body and reburied it. She believes that the beating was to
help speed the decomposition. May be beating is not the correct word here.

As for the body out to sea. She remembers of a story of someone from
Madalena with a very bad reputation that was buried twice and after the
second time the body was still intact it was decided to dump the body in
the ocean.

As for saints who's body did not decomposes, when opening graves they
are other signs like the fragrances of flowers.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Bizarre...but is it true?

2014-04-23 Thread Manuel Martins

Every parish had a cemetery, the oldest grave was the first to be used,
families that had means could by the grave and any family member could
be buried there after 7 years, the length of time differed between
cemeteries. Some areas decomposed the body faster than others. In
Madalena for example, they used to add lime to the graves to speed the
process. Now 4 vases with liquid are added to the coffins, this is done
because now a days many pass away in Horta, Terceira or Sao Miguel and
by law for the body to travel it has to be inside a zinc box inside the
coffin, before the coffin is lowered it is opened and a whole is cut in
the zinc box this starts the decomposing process.

In the old days if a grave is dug and the body was still intact, it was
reburied for another 7 years, if it is still intact the body after that
time the body it taken and put on a boat and taken out to sea where they
would beat the body and dump it in the ocean. I do not know what is the
current process after 7 years.

Most families knew where their loved ones were buried, some marked the
graves with a cross others stopped by once in a while to drop flowers or
prayed. But people mostly offered masses or donated to the poor in the
deceased name. Visiting the grave site was not the tradition that I
remember.

A paid grave can be reused in times of need or when there are no other
graves available.

I did a search for my great-great-grandfather there and found the

But one way to look at it is also beneficial. I found in one Hungarian
village someone with the same rather unique surname and it turned out
to be the brother of my great-great-grandmother. I think the headstone
was from the early 1900s and the fact it's still there (a very nice
and tall tombstone) tells me someone has been paying for it and I have
yet to track them down. They would be fairly close cousins.

Same thing for me in Piedade, Pico. I found a Leal da Rosa headstone,
pretty new, and knew there was a cousin not far away. I did find them
and they were 4th or 5th cousins, I believe.

I wonder if the cemetery makes some kind of notification before
removal. Otherwise, I think many more might be gone if people forgot
to renew.

Yes it's true. I have lived and travelled to dozens of countries
and this practice is common all over the world. There isn't enough
room for all the bodies. My grandfather died in Terceira and was
buried there in 1940, aged 40. When I lived in Terceira I went to
the cemeteries to search for his headstone or some information on
him and found out his bones had been removed 7 years after the
burial. In Terceira it was 7 years I don't know about the other
islands. In Guam I think it was 11 years after burial when I lived
there. When I lived in the UK they leased plots for a period of 25
50 or 99 years. It's the same in Australia. Paris and Rome have
famous ossuaries and catacombs

Feria would be a non-Portuguese person guessing how to spell Faria.

Many immigrated to the eastern ports: New York, Boston,
Providence, New Bedford. Then many went overland to CA. A few
did go around the horn and immigrated through San Francisco. Some

changes depending on what record I'm looking at: it varies
from 1876-1878, as does the immigration date: 1894-1895. I
found more census records on him and Emma from 1910 and 1920,

Faria, and by the 1940 census, Emma is the sole head of

this, and I'm perplexed as to who John S. may be. I cannot
find anything on Emma Enos either, at least not the one I'm
looking for. Manuel and Emma had 9 children and all appeared
to have been born in Contra Costa, CA: Manuel George, Lawrence
Daniel (my grandfather), Mary Evelyn/Evelyn Mary, John H.,
Anthony, Philomena, Margaret, Frances, and Roseanne/Rose.

I also have a question about immigration. When people left the

did they always go to Boston or New York or other eastern

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] occupation = Lutador

When was the 'lutador' born? If you remember, Portugal was under
Spanish dominance from 1580 to 1640, in Terceira when the Spanish tried
to land the people fought and released the bulls after the Spaniards, I
wonder if this individual fought and was nicked named 'lutador'.

Also, the kings used many of the Azoreans to fight in the wars, he could
have been on of these soldiers.

Boxing was/is not practiced in the Azores, but one can never tell. Back
in the early 1900's basketball was played a lot.

It is defined as fighter or wrestler, but in a society (Terceira)
where people are more concerned with feeding their families than
entertainment, could this really be the meaning? Maybe a bull fighter,
since Terceira does have them these days. But I was thinking maybe
it's more like a soldier which is usually listed as soldado.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Name of the mother of Joao

2014-03-18 Thread Manuel Martins
Maria,

Miguelina is a female version of Miguel it was a way to distinguish from
Maria this or Rosa that. As for the maternal grandparents, that is it.
You can search for the baptism and hope it describes what happened.

I Pico I have seen where the baby was dropped at the front door of
someone's home or left on the street near someone's home. One call guess
if the baby was from someone in the house or for other reasons.

Good luck,

Manny

However, I came across this record where the names of the grandparents

There's several coincidences: both men came from the same parish; both men

 Hello,

Does anyone have information on Manuel d'Avila de Bettencourt, church
treasurer for at least these years 1843, 1856, 1857 1860?

I'm seeing him as the padrinho (godfather) for a few children that were
baptized without a father. Was he the father of the out of wedlock
children or because he held a high position within the town?

 Thank you,

 Manny

When i was in Argentina several years ago my cousin whose mother was
brought up by her grandfather Joao Andrade Macedo on Pico mentioned a
relationship to the Soares family who my aunt said came to America via
Canada. This family probably originated on Ilha de S. Maria in the Azores
,and certainly the origin of other ancestors who went to Brazil was Ilha de
 S. Jorge. I think my aunts Marjorie Macedo and Dorothea Steffans visited
the Soares relatives when they went to America, about 25 years ago.

N.B Maria Brum b.1733 has different parents in the Lajes database. I have
pondered this for the last 2 months and think they have Maria Brum muddled
 up with another one.
I’d be grateful for anything any of you can add to this.

 ***UPDATE***

Heres some information I gathered from my grandma.

My great-grandparents were Manuel Martins Maria Evangelina Martins.
Manuel died around 1953 or so and Maria died before than. Manuel re-married
 and had one child.

The children of Manuel Martins Maria Evangelina:

Odete Martins-Not sure if she is still alive

Fernanda Martins-Resendes(Not sure if this is the correct last name). Has
3 daughters probably living in California. Names are Teresa, Paula
Esmeralda. Joao Resendes is the dad. Again not sure if Resendes was the
 last name

 Jose Martins-Died

Mariano Martins-Died but his wife and children came to Massachusetts also
and had one son working with MCI(a telephone company) and he got in contact
 with the family ages ago.

 Norberto Martins-probably alive

 From the second marriage:

 Julio Martins-probably still alive.

On a side note. My grandfather had a cousin living here in Massachusetts
that was Fillipino his name was Verba Martins and he had a daugther named
 Maria Martins

Everyone hailed from Sao Jose-Ponta Delgada.

I am sure my grandfather Gabriel Martins didn't arrive here on a boat. The
problem is no one knows when they came here. I am assuming my grandfather
came in the late 60s early 70s.

Thanks for the reply JS Lopes, Cheri and Eric.

It seems that twice in my father's line men have taken mothers maiden names

Was taking on your mothers Maiden name instead of your fathers last name a

1.) Is the name De Barcello a common Portuguese surname? I've never heard

2.) From reading this baptism record it looks like it says the Padrinho

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Sebastiao Vieira-Help with Grandparents names

2012-10-30 Thread Adrian Martins
Thank you both Marcio and Shirley..Very much appreciated.

Do either of you have any idea why it is that the further back you go in
the records it seems they don't list the maiden names of either the mother
or grandmothers? I seem to be encountering this problem a lot.

Maternal side - Raymundo Borges/joseph? Francisca Maria

 Any help would be appreciated

Thanks very much Cheri..I'll have a look. So much great info you have
accumulated Cheri..really amazing!
Last question for the night once you encounter a middle religious name
instead of a maiden/surname is the search over in that person's tree? im
not sure how you would trace that person back.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: I think this is my grandmothers Baptism record. Can someone help with Translation.

2012-10-20 Thread Adrian Martins
Hi Jorge,

Thank you for taking the time to write me to let me know of our ancestral
connection.
I just sat down to look at your msg and am happy to get this info.

My mother told me stories about having relatives in Brazil somewhere. She
mentioned that her mother (Maria Do Carmelo Borges Pires) used to write to
Raymunda and was invited to come live with them but Maria had declined for
whatever reason. In the meantime they stopped writing and lost touch. My
mother Maria Manuela Borges Pires Martins is now in her early 70's and is
doing well. Still remembers many things from way back when.
Where are you located? Are u in Rio? Are you in touch with other family
from the original descendants of the 6 children?

My family settled in Cambridge Ontario Canada. My grandmother Maria lived
with us for a long time before she passed away so I remember her well.

Do you have any baptismal records for Manuel Borges Pires or his wife Maria
Jose Da Silva? I cant seem to find them.
Also were they both born in Ilha da Madeira, Portugal? My mom doesn't think
that was correct...but doesn't know for sure.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Adrian Martins.

[AZORES-Genealogy] New to the Azores Gen site with a few questions.

2012-10-04 Thread Adrian Martins
Good afternoon,

I recently joined the site and am fairly new to researching my families
history.
I was directed to the Direção Regional da
Culturahttp://www.azores.gov.pt/Portal/pt/entidades/pgra-drcultura/?lang=pt/
Culturazores website and have been trying to navigate through it.

I have a few questions regarding that website I'm hoping someone can help
me answer.

1.) If you dont speak Portuguese how does one get the documents translated?
Is there a service somewhere that can translate old documents such as these?
2.) Are Baptismos records considered Birth records?
3.) It looks like the records are listed by page not by dates. Does this
mean you have to search through every page to find the record your looking
for?
4.) Are there any records listed for the island of Faial? I dont see that
island listed. If not is there another website where i can find those
records.

Thank you kindly.
Adrian Martins.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Just joined and planning to visit Pico and Terceira

2010-08-20 Thread Franz Joseph Martin (great grandson of Manuel S A Martins from Pico and Josephine M Soares from Terceira)
Dear all,

I just joined this as I am planning to travel to Azores next year with
my family to visit the place of our Martins-Soares (Pico) and Martins-
Souza (Terceira) ancestors

My great-grandparents were:

- Manuel S A Martins born in Pico, 1883 (son of Jose S A Martins and
Maria C De Souza)
- Josephine (Josepha or Josefa) M Soares born in Terceira 1885
(daughter of Jose M Soares and Anna M Soares)

Both emigrated from the Azores Islands (dates unknown) to Tauton in
Boston, Massachussets and married on 18.Jan.1908.

My grandfather was Joseph Martin (they removed the s), born in
Tauton, Massachussets, USA on 10.11.1910. He died in 2007

He met my grandmother (Noemi Gonzalez in Guanacaste, Costa Rica) and
my dad, Joseph M. Martin was born in Puntarenas, Costa Rica on Jan.
1944.

I was born in San Jose, Costa Rica in 1967.

I have fours kids born (three born in San Jose, Costa Rica and one
born in Santiago, Chile). We now live in Rome, Italy.

As you can see, we have been moving during generations, so I would
like to know more about this islands. It seems my grandfather has
been the only one in the family having visited our ancestor's place.

Would it be difficult to find their record to rebuild our family tree
back from the names of my great-grandparents.

Thanks for any advice/orientation you can provide.

Franz Joseph Martin
