You are very welcome Lorraine! I am happy I could help you find some
information. I get so excited when I find someone I'm looking for even if they
aren't from my line. It was fun to meet with you & your husband when you
were visiting CA. I hope you have a wonderful trip! I hope to go to the Azores
someday. That is a dream I hope comes true. Thanks for your kind words.
I'm happy to help anyone I can. We don't get many people researching the
Azores here in our Moreno Valley Family History Center. It is pretty much just
me researching the Azores here. Take care.

My next question would be - do I bother to research the Benevides line
since they are not biological? Or maybe I should just find out who Francisco's
adoptive siblings were? Since I can't research the biological on him any
further I think I'd at least like to have a snapshot of his family life with

Here is a baptism for Maria, with a more clear style of penmanship: bottom,
left side of page: http://goo.gl/Y5y2y9";
target="_blank">http://goo.gl/Y5y2y9
Maybe
Jenoavia, Jensovia , but the transcribers "O" does not follow in line
with his/her other O's. But, the paternal grandmother is Genoveva.
Hope this helps. I'm sure a more experienced reader will be able to
figure it out.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Online database of birth or baptismal records?

2011-12-08 Thread CaraBela
The baptismal record I sent was from a microfilm that I was using at a
Family History Center. I scanned the image from the film. There are a lot of
films that cover the Catholic Church's parish records for the Azores &
places all over the world. There are about 20 FHC's in Alaska from what I see.
I
don't know where you are or how close you may be to a Family History
Center. Go to : familysearch.org & click on Family History Centers. You can do
a
search for the state to see where the Centers are. Maybe you will be lucky
& one will be close to you. Good luck!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help needed to read child's name, please.

I have all the children for this family. There were 12 children born to the
parents. The children were: Jose, Joao, Francisco, Manoel, Filameno,
Christianna, Twins- Luiz & Florinda, Capitulina, Maria, unreadable male,
Maria.
I have ordered the death records for this parish to see if the first Maria
died before the second one was born. I had never seen or heard the names
Christianna & Capitulina until I was reading this particular film. There
were a few of each of them.

The parents were Francsico Jose Pacheco & Victoria Cherubina (Querubina).
Some of the children had their paternal grandfather as their godfather,
Joao Jacintho Pacheco. I have just started on this line recently so I will
keep looking. This particular child was the only one I couldn't figure out his
name. Thanks to everyone for you help & time.

I don't know the birth order. If you collect all the kids of this couple,
the births could go into the time period where they say, "Luiz, second of
the name." Then you'd know for sure it was Luis. Or you could collect the
marriages of all the kids too. Whatever people see for that name on the
list...check out every Luiz or Pedro getting married and see who his parents
were.

You can have multiple living Marias (one will go by Maria and the others

the twin died. Look for the death of a Luiz between twin Luiz's birth and
the unreadable male's birth. If you find a deceased Luiz, then go looking
for the marriage of Luiz whose parents were Franco. Jose Pacheco & Vitoria
Cherubina. You will then know the unreadable name for sure.

On the Family Tree on Ancestry.com you can try to contact the list owner.
They may get in touch with you. I have had some who do & some who don't.

I can't seem to upload the images I have from Ancestry.com. Terceira
is the island, with Anna voz Toste departing in 1920 from St. Michael
and arriving thru Boston in April 1920. I'm told that Jose Borges
emigrated in 1917 but find no census records which include him. He was
destined for his sister Anna Borges and her husband Manuel Roderick in
Providence, RI. My search for them intersected with a public family
tree posted to Ancestry.com, and according to this there is a living
female child from their marriage. My (my husband's) Uncle Joe is very
eager to contact this heretofore unknown first cousin. Since she is
living, the Ancestry site understandably keeps her data private. I
tried searching for obit in CT and RI and FLm but haven't found
anything.

The FRC is a great idea. We're in Anchorage so I expect I can get
there very easily. Thanks again, you all inspire me! The Azores are
among my Mother in Law's happiest memories with her husband. I hope to
visit with our family, too.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Merry Christmas / Feliz Natal

My Mom got the best Christmas ever, yesterday! She met her first
grandchild, who was given up for adoption almost 28 years ago! My niece will
be 28
yrs. old on Jan. 2nd. She has been in contact with the family through email
for a few years & has met her birth-mother a couple of years ago. I have
been in contact with her for a few years by email & she decided she wanted to
meet my Mom this year. It was supposed to have happened this summer but it
didn't & my niece had to be in the same area where my Mom lives for a work
related meeting so decided to go early & meet her grandmother if it was
okay. My Mom is 74 yrs. old & alone in Mass. She has had a lot of health
issues this year so this couldn't have come at a better time.

My Mom was there when she was born & spent time with her at the hospital
until the day she was taken to be placed with her adopted family. Our family
has prayed for her to be re-united with us someday. What a blessing she is
& what a Christmas miracle!

Merry Christmas & Happy, Healthy new Year to everyone!

I have to agree with Dora. I use Personal Ancestral File & have for years.
I was sad when I heard this program will not be upgraded in the future but
I still use it. You can import pictures, keep lots of notes & document
your sources. It is easy to print out reports and the program will put all
your information into a book format that you can print out with or without an
index. A lot of my friends use Rootsmagic & that is probably they program I
will go to if I ever give up my PAF. I have put my family information into
Rootmagic via a GEDCOM & I liked what I saw. I also liked the book format a
little bit better. Both programs are very easy to use.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Graciosa Indexing

2012-02-18 Thread CaraBela
Be careful with indexing microfilms. If you are using microfilms from a
Family History Center, the majority of them have a warning label on them these
days. The warning labels differ. The films I have at the FHC, with records
from Graciosa have a warning label that says:

Warning!

By contract between the Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU) and the owner
(s) of some or all of the included records, this microfilm may not be: Sold,
Duplicated, Distributed, Extracted, or Indexed

Except under limited circumstances. For further information contact:

Family History Center Support
50 East North Temple Street
Salt Lake City, Utah 84150-3400
Telephone: 1-800-346-6044

Violation of such restriction(s)
May result in civil or criminal liability!

I wouldn't want you to get into any trouble.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Francisco Pereira & Rosa Vicente- Sao Miguel

2012-03-29 Thread CaraBela
I was wondering if the names Francisco Pereira & Rosa Vicente were
familiar to anyone on the list. A friend of mine is stuck at these 2 people on
one
of her lines. They were both born on Sao Miguel, we don't know where, but
with different records stating different ages we are guessing they were born
around 1875. On one Hawaii census, 1910, says he was 2 years older than
her, then on a birth record of one of their children it says she was 2 yrs.
older than him so we who knows!

They met & married in Fall River, Mass. around 1899. Their first born
child was born in May 1900 in Hawaii, which is where they went after they
married. They stayed in Hawaii & died there.

This is all we know & are trying to find out where they came from on Sao
Miguel.
 Thanks,
Sherry

& she said because her sister put a map of Madeira in the family book.

Thanks for all the help! I will have her call to see if she can get more

passenger lists to the US but there are a lot of Francisco Pereira's & Rosa's!
I couldn't pinpoint them.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] definition

2012-05-15 Thread CaraBela
Mike,

I am curious as to how you got the baptismal certificate from St. John's?
Did you go in person or mail a request? Did you send a donation if it was by
 mail?

I ask because I have tried over the years to get a marriage record for my
great-grandparents from that parish & they ignored me over & over. I sent
donations and even sent a letter to the Diocese asking how to get a copy.
They told me to write to Father Oliveria, which I did & sent a copy of the
letter from the Diocese, but I got nothing. My cousin hired a professional
genealogist to go there & try to get a copy of the record but she wasn't able
to either. I gave up.

I was so surprised to see you were successful.

You can see if they have any microfilms from the areas you are researching in

What are the names of those you are looking for.I found my great,

Mike, this is just a gut feeling, but given the date and the location, I would
reasonably assume they came first to Dartmouth/New Bedford. The influx of
Portuguese immigrants to New Bedford and Fall River was amazing at the time
period. Most came in through the port of Boston rather than New York, which
may help. The California towns at that point were pretty undeveloped and if
you were a female, there probably wasn't much there, whereas, gold, and other
employment made it more lucrative for males (and the fishing was also a
potential).

I have to agree, the flavor & texture of the linguica & chourico isn't the
same in Calif. as the ones from Mass. I was born & raised in Mass. & I
have now lived in Calif. for 20+ years. I have tried most of the ones from
Calif. & I must be spoiled because I just don't like them. It changes the
flavor to the soups and whatever else we put them in. I do order Gaspar's a
lot! My family in MA was in the New Bedford area. They used to mail it to be.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Searching Agua de Pau for Correia, Pacheco, TAvares,

2009-06-16 Thread CaraBela
You mentioned you found a grave in New Bedford with the name Tavares on it.
My family has a Tavares family plot in St. John's Cemetery in New Bedford.
It is a long flat marker that just says "Tavares." There are quite a few
family members buried under there. My great, great grandparents Guilherme
(William) Tavares & Augusta Botelho Neves Tavares are there. Augusta's
mother, Jacintha Botelho da Silva is also there. My great grandparents are
there, Oscar Horta Pacheco & Maria (Mary) Joanna Tavares Pacheco. Mathilda
Tavares & her 4 children are all there also. Virginio Perriera (Gene Perry) is
there also. He was my great-aunt's second husband. Edna Pacheco Perry & her
sister, my grandmother Bertha Pacheco Rose will be buried there also when
they die.

A lot of people are there & just the name Tavares. It took a very long
time to get the names of all who are buried there. My great-aunt, Edna went
there years ago & got into an argument with the lady at the office for the
cemetery. Edna still pays for the family plot & she wanted to know who all
was in there because she wanted to know who she was going to be buried with
someday. They lady wasn't very nice & my sweet little Aunt finally wore her
down & got her to make a copy of the one card that had all the information.
We were surprised so many were there.

Our Tavares line only said they were from Ponta Delgada. That is all they
would say. I did find on a passenger list that had my great, great
grandmother & her two daughters, that the girls were listed as being born in
Relva &
it said "Matriz" for my gg grandmother's birthplace. I have been told that
"Matriz" means Mother Church. I haven't looked into this line any further.
I have been working on another line in Graciosa for quite a while.

records, then on others he is listed as " Manoel Goularte Manabo" or Manoel
Gularte Mbo.

Is Manabo a name or an occupation? I haven't seen Manabo before. He is from
Pico & I haven't spent a lot of time before this on Pico films.

His parents were Manoel Gularte Jorge & Eugenia Roza.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

It could be Manoel Goularte Mancebo
Mancebo = Jr. , but I am not sure because its
not spelled right, but maybe thats what you understood
Could be Mancebo or Junior

Dear Listers,

I'm just hoping someone might have a microfilm from Sao Miguel at the FHC from
a parish I haven't researched.

Domingos Moniz Machado was born in Sao Miguel 8 February 1874. I've searched
the freguesias (parishes of: Apostolo de Sao Pedro, Sao Jose and most recently
Sao Sebastao (Matrix). I was so sure he would be in Sao Sebastao but was very
disappointed when I didn't find him there

Now, I ask you where do I go next? I know he had a brother named Clement
(Clemencio? sp?) who changed his last name to Marshall. They went to Boston.
I need to find their parents or syblings to do any more research on this line
and hope someone can help me.

Maybe someone has a microfilm on file from any parish in Sao Miguel and could
see if he was in that parish. please?

His parents were Emilia Moniz and Jacintho Machado

Any help would be "heavenly" Thanks

Maria Elena

I was referring to the 1880 California census where Robin saw a "Manuel"

I don't think there is a Pico "census" per se other than the church or

Sometimes you are so intent in looking for a document you overlook what
you are looking for. I would also go back and look some more for the marriage

I am trying to find the marriage record or baptismal records for the

should have

if they were born in a different parish or even a different island. I am
not good with translating but can usually figure out of the parents or
grandparents were from a different parish. I was wondering if someone on the
list could help me.

>From the baptismal record for Manoel I have that he was baptized on 13
June 1874, Santa Catharina parish in Castelo Branco. He was born on the 9th of
 June.

His parents were Jose Silveira Goulart & Maria Clementina.

His grandparents were Joaquim Jose Goulart & Maria Luiza, Jose Pereira

His Godparents were Manoel Jose Machado & his wife Maria Gloria ( a

If anyone could help me with this I would really appreciate it. This is

Thanks Rick. I have looked for the parents marriage 3 times. I even went
way back, more than I should from the first child being born. I will go back
over the sibling's baptismal records & see if there is something about
them coming from somewhere else. Thank you for your help. I wish I could read
& speak the language. It sure would make things easier. I can read dates &
a few words. Thank heavens for dictionaries & people like you willing to
help. Take care.

You have done a good job in reading the document. I cannot see any
indication that his parents are from another parish, in fact the document says
natives and residing in the parish. You may just want to look for some
siblings to make sure they agree with this document.
Sometimes you are so intent in looking for a document you overlook what
you are looking for. I would also go back and look some more for the marriage
of the parents. I went back to a roll of film 5 times because I was not
comfortable with the marriage I found and then I found the right one which
was exactly in the year I thought it would be. A name was hyphenated which
made it look like another name.

I am trying to find the marriage record or baptismal records for the
parents of Manoel Silveira Goulart. I have attached his baptismal
record,(Manoel's)from Castelo Branco, Faial. I have looked at the films that
should have
the parents marriage & baptisms but I am not finding them. I was wondering
if they were born in a different parish or even a different island. I am
not good with translating but can usually figure out of the parents or
grandparents were from a different parish. I was wondering if someone on the
list could help me.

>From the baptismal record for Manoel I have that he was baptized on 13
June 1874, Santa Catharina parish in Castelo Branco. He was born on the 9th
of June.

His parents were Jose Silveira Goulart & Maria Clementina.

His grandparents were Joaquim Jose Goulart & Maria Luiza, Jose Pereira
Pinheiro & Maria Clementina.

His Godparents were Manoel Jose Machado & his wife Maria Gloria ( a
paternal Aunt).

If anyone could help me with this I would really appreciate it. This is
for a friend of mine.

Thanks,

[AZORES-Genealogy] Antonio d'Oliviera & Rita (Ignacia) Moniz

2011-06-08 Thread CaraBela
I am trying to help my cousin find the above listed people. He is trying to
help someone else. The information he gave me was this:

Antonio Joaquim d'Oliviera Moniz (surnames might be reversed) born ca. Dec
1840 possibly Piedade, Pico , Lajes do Pico ,Azores; or St. George, Azores
,
(he had a brother named Joseph )

Son of Antonio d'Oliviera and Rita (Ignacia) Moniz.

I searched the Piedade film for a 20 year span around 1840 looking for any
children being born to Antonio & Rita but couldn't find any. I will try
the other parishes on Pico. I don't have all the films at our Family History
Center for Sao Jorge.

I was wondering if these names are familiar to anyone? If so, let me know.
Thanks,
Sherry

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Crespim Family

My family has a grave site at St. John's and there are 10 people buried in
the plot. The only marker that is there says "Tavares". My great-great
grandparents were named Tavares but all the others are descendants or in-laws.
We got the card from the cemetery office to find out who was buried in the
family plot. It wasn't easy getting a copy of that card but the lady
finally broke down & gave a copy to my great-Aunt, who was still paying for
the
site's care. She will be buried there some day & she too wasn't a Tavares,
she was a Pacheco.

Hi Margaret,

I hate to bother you again but you have helped me so much! I was looking at
familysearch.org for the films for Sao Jose parish in Ponta Delgada. There
are 2 listed. I was wondering if you could tell me which parish I might
need, or if I should order both. The listings are:

Sao Jose parish in Salga, Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel
Sao Jose parish in Ponta Delgada, Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel.

My family never narrowed down where they actually lived in Ponta Delgada so
this is amazing to me to get a parish name. Oscar's wife (my g
grandmother) was from Relva but they always said Ponta Delgada. I got her
actual birth
place off her passenger list.

Thanks so much for your help! Take care.

yesterday & decided to post them on the Azores list to see if anyone could
help me. I was so blessed! I now have a more accurate location for my
great-grandfather's mother & family & now I know he had 2 more brothers we

Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate it. I hope you have a

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] cold fish recipe

My great-grandmother used to make something like that with cod fish. I
don't remember saffron being in it. I know it had cod fish, onions, vinegar &
I think red peppers from a jar ( they were chopped). I will have to check
with my Mom to see if she remembers what all went into it. I loved the
dish! It was all crumbled up like we do with tuna but no mayonnaise. I live in
Southern CA & we don't have the dried cod fish like they do back east. My
family was in the New Bedford, MA area & I loved visiting because of all the
Portuguese food! My mom, brother & I lived on Cape Cod & there was some
Portuguese foods but not like New Bedford! Oh i wish I could go visit!

It is quite funny what is on this passport record, because Augusta was
traveling with her 2 daughters to her husband who was already in Mass. He may
be who was listed as one of the names next to Matilde. His name was
Guilherme Tavares. They got the girls mixed up also on the passport, Maria is
older
than Matilde. These people were alive until my teens & 20's. I wish I had
asked more questions back then.

Thanks you for your help with the headings. I had no clue what they were.

I agree w/Richard, Augusta's marital status is listed as "V," Viuva/

BTW, you stated incorrect passport #'s for girls; they are all
travelling on Augusta's passport, #237 (note the ditto marks); also,
according to the record, these girls are not Augusta's daughters, as
different parents are listed. I would venture a guess that Augusta is
either their Aunt, or, some other close relative.

You asked about the data in the columns - they are as follow, L-R:
Book #, Year, Month, Day, Passport #, Individual #, Individual's Name,
Individual's Parents' Names, Individual's Marital Status, Individual's
Age, Residence - Concelho/District, Freguesia/Parish, Occupation, &
the final column - which data is not discernable. You can ignore the
titles encaptioned at the top, as they do not necessarily reflect the
specific data in the corresponding columns. They may have been added to
provide some ease in locating the more desired data.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] MA death after 1917

2011-10-04 Thread CaraBela
My family has a story about a divorced woman who wasn't allowed to be
buried in the Catholic Cem. But my great, great-grandmother paid $1000 to
someone & they moved her from the cemetery she was buried in to the St. John's
Cemetery in New Bedford, "under the cover of darkness." (Those were the
words my family always used when they would tell the story. The family plot
only has a marker that says "Tavaras" & you wouldn't know that there are about
12 people buried there. I do have a copy of the card from the cemetery
that my great-Aunt got for me. The lady at the cemetery didn't want to give it
to her but she was the one still paying to care for the plot & will be
buried there someday. We were surprised to see more burials there than we
thought & yes, Matilda, the divorced woman, was there with her children.
Matilda died in 1939. A thousand dollars was a lot back then but they got her
in
with the family.

would cover the time period I needed. Unfortunately when I came to film #
1330076, the film was not the film that should be in that box. The first clue
was the reel was blue. All the film I have received from Salt Lake have a
white reel. Then when I went to look at the film, which should be parish
records, there are index cards that are all typed. It looks like immigration
records I have seen before. I will need to reorder this film & hopefully get
 the correct film.

I was wondering if anyone on the list may have this particular film number
at their FHC & if they could look for me to see if there is a baptismal
record for this lady:

Maria Louiza de Perreira Goulart
Born: 24 Oct 1833

Parents were: Manoel Perreira & Rose Maria Goulart

This would sure save me time while I reorder this film. Apparently someone
put the wrong film in the box before it was shipped to us many years ago.

Thank you to anyone who is willing to help me. Take care.
Sincerely,
Sherry Barnhurst

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with film #1330076 (Faial records)

2011-10-25 Thread CaraBela
Thank you for your suggestion. I did go to the site but the people I'm
looking for are not there. They are very elusive. I have been at a road block
on this line for a while. I worked another line for a while & came back
hoping for some luck. The time isn't right I guess. Thanks for your help.
Sherry

Sherry,

I don't have access to this film, but the film number shows it is for
Cedros, Faial. If you use the NEPS site for Faial you can search the
genealogies constructed by the same parish records

that were filmed.

I spent a few minutes looking at it, but did not find any of these three
people listed. Perhaps she was born in a neighboring parish or thename was
slightly different, or I just missed it.

The San Diego Regional Family History Center has the film in question,
which is about five miles from where I live.
I believe that the Los Angeles Family History Library also has it.
