Her name is Escholastica Amelia. The modern form does not have 'H' in the 
name. I am guessing the stamp represents a fee paid to register the 
marriage. Most people could not afford to pay the fee. It is dated Sept 11 
- 1889.

She is daughter of Jose Maria Teixeira, native of parish of Santa Barbara, 
Velas, Island of São Jorge; and of  Maria Julia, native of the 
aforementioned parish of Divino Espirito Santo

Erica, *There are TWO "bottom of the pages" in the image in your link, you 
need to specify which you are referring to -* the one on the left shouldn't 
present any problem for anyone to read, so I will presume that you are 
having difficulty with the page on the right.  I agree with Hermano, this 
record does not mention the people you refer to; it is a Marriage record 
for Domingos de Mello (fisherman), son of Simao da Costa and Maria 
Fernandes with "Maria" de Souza, daughter of Joao Furtado, and what appears 
to be *another** "*Maria" de Souza, as her mother. The narrative states 
that the bride's parents are both deceased - that is all that pertains to 
the Bride's family. From there, the narrative goes on to mention several 
prominent dignitaries witnessing the event, but there is no mention of 
anyone named 'Manuel' de Souza, or Maria 'Rodriguez.' I think that you may 
have just read the names wrong.

They are in Rodrigo Rodrigues book.

found one immigration record - Philomena da Luz from Fayal who came to 
Boston in 1893.

Can you give me the names and birthdates of any of the children?   I 
couldn't even locate these people in the census records.  Anymore 
information you can share.

Hi all,

Just wondering if someone is willing to look for a marriage record for
my ancestor.  The marriage would have taken place I think in Boston,
MA sometime between 1870 and 1874 (She came into Boston on a ship in
Oct, 1870 and had her first child in 1874 - may have had one before
him that died).  Anyway her name was Philomena da Luz.  It could be
under the spelling Filomena too.  She married Joseph King, however I
am not sure that was his name at the time they married (my dad's baby
book has him listed as Manual King and I am sure the last name is
anglicized.)  I checked ancestry and didn't find anything but I am not
overly adept at navigating that website.

Lillian, you need to go to the AzoresGenWeb site,
http://www.worldgenweb.org/azrwgw/,  and download the map for Sao Jorge.
Just looking at your info I would say to start to look in Santa Barbara da
Manadas, Councelho of Velas. You need to get familiar with the villages and
church names.

Lillian, I don't know where "here" is, as I can't see what you are thinking
in your head. You provided a link to baptisms on Sao Miguel island, not the
finding aids of Sao Jorge island.

I can't screen shot it, as the drop down menus don't stay "stuck."

At the top, point (hover) over Maps, Databases, Indexes (circled). A drop
down will appear with the islands listed alphabetically. Point (hover) over
Sao Jorge island and you will see what finding aids have been contributed

Hi Dano, I might have found the record for Joao Mota b. abt 1636 shown on
your pdf document. Hard to read because of abbreviations but I think this
is his baptism record from Sao Pedro records having him born on 26 Feb

Dano, One other find that is possible match for Goncalo Mendes death
record. The record lists his age at death to be 110 years old!  Do you
think it's a match? The record is on the left page, second one down from
top.

Actually, this one isn't too bad - I've seen much worse. This link lists 
two baptisms for children named Joao - the correct one appears to be the 
upper left; the dates and the  parents appear to match the chart 
data, which was taken from the Carlos Machado Manuscripts. My opinion is 
that its a match.

document with a date specific for Goncalo Mendes. Was Goncalo 110 yrs 
old when he died? Perhaps. If he was 110 yrs old at death, who, that 
was still living at that time, would "know" - absent a document that 
actually stated his date of birth. Did Goncalo, himself, even know when he 
was born? Most of our ancestors only had a vague idea, at best, of when 
they were born - they didn't live in an era that people needed that kind 
of information. We're at the point where there aren't many records left 
that can substantiate, or disprove, what you've found. Now the question 
becomes: "is it the [right] Goncalo Mendes," but, I wouldn't worry about 
that unless, or until, someone, using "credible" information, disputes your 
find **- so, take credit for your find (GOOD WORK)! *

I guess I'm on a roll but I've found the marriage record for Manuel Mota
and Ana Rodriques from 1620. And it gives Manuel Mota father's name
although I'm not sure what it is (Manuel Voas or Voaz or something
else).,,can you make it out? It's on the right side of page at top.
Interesting that they did not list the mother's names,

*Manoel da Mota's father's surname is "Vasconcellos". As for Anna's mother, 
women (mothers) were not always mentioned in early records - especially, if 
they weren't of noble birth. Apparently, she died sometime in years between 
Anna's birth, and her marriage to Manoel da Mota. That Goncalo was a 
widower, is stated in this very record by the word "viuvo," following 
Goncalo Mendes' surname. You are progressing rapidly, indeed, my friend - 
now let's see you tackle Goncalo's Baptismal Record, you only have forty, 
or so, more years to

Manoel, Capt. Braz Monis Pereira fo Joao Camelo Pereira and Dona Barbara
Monis de Battencout was padrinho to my 5th g-grandfather, Manoel
Pereira. Manoel was the son of Manoel Furtado Seixas & Maria Pereira (no
marriage for them--6th mo. gap in records).  There seems to be close ties
of this family to Manoel Furtado's family.  Do you know of any Furtados
connected to the Camelo Pereiras?  I did find a Manoel Furtado for padrinho
for
one of their children born in Fernais da Ajuda.  Also, I just found Joao
Camelo Pereira e Barbara Monis' marriage, however their daughter, Maria was
born way before they married!  Tell what you think.

I know of a Furtado's line which is connected to Moniz Vieira and 
Bettencourt in Fenais da Ajuda in that time period.
Captain Braz Furtado de Medeiros married Maria Moniz Vieira and I think 
that she may be connected to Bárbara Moniz de Bettencourt.

I haven't been following this thread closely, however I saw the question
about waiting 5 years to marry.

I had a couple that had kids for 4 or 5 years before getting married. They
were 1st cousins and it took that long for the dispensation to go through.
I don't know if that's the case with your couple or not.

consanguinity and they will ask for the dispensation.

Are you sure the father's name has Seixas? I don't see that in the marriage 
record. The questionable name on the other side is Freytas (Freitas). Best 
advice is to look around the neighbouring parishes, like Sao Pedro or Sao 
Jose. You might even find them in Lagoa.

Like Lee, I am very curious about those people named after the groom's 
deceased parents.  The first, Manuel Andrade, seems to be the priest, then 
it looks like Jose de Medeiros da Camera, ??? Jose Martins, Martinho Rapozo 
and Joseph Rapozo.  I haven't seen this done before.

My first thought is that one or more was standing in for the deceased 
parents because perhaps the groom had not reached majority age (I don't 
know if he had or not).  But if this is the case, why so many people?

It looks like it says "em presence de mim", followed by the priest's name 
(as Bill pointed out), so I would assume that rest of the names are of 
witnesses to the marriage.  Usually, it would say "testamunhos", but I 
don't see that.  On the other hand, I loose the thread of it entirely where 
the ink fades, so FWIW, that's my best theory.

Some of my cousin's are Pavao's-- will let them know about their famous 
connection :)  Thanks!

Bill, You're correct, Manuel Andrade is the priest (Vigaro); In the 
narrative he is merely stating that those named individuals were signing 
(signo) below, along with him. He may actually have signed *for* them. As 
for padrinhos, I don't see anyone specifically listed as such, but, these 
individuals were, at least, acting as witnesses to the ceremony.

Where do your ancestors come from before Porto Formoso? There are Silvas in 
Ribeira Grande, Maia and some in Nordeste and Povoacao. Faial da Terra has 
both Silvas and Pimentels. Of course many other places have Silvas.

I don't think you missed anything, it's just a difficult record. I do know 
that Isabel is Isabel Lopes, but certainly not from reading that record! I 
believe all these Fragosos appear to be related. But proving it is another 
matter. I think Manuel and Margaret have Fragoso ancestors. The majority 
appear to be in Lagoa.

Sylveira in slightly better penmanship, I think it is the name you are 
looking for,but I am by no means an expert.

I read the date as you do, 23 March 1807,

It says Jose Rapozo was baptized at Nossa Senhora da Conceicao in 
Mosteiros.  I see his father as you do, Antonio Martins; but I see his 
mother as Joanna dos Reis.  Quiteria Maria was baptized in Ginetes.  I see 
her parents as you do, Luiz Pereira and Thereza Maria. 

I don't believe it says where the parents are from.

Revoredo. She married Francisco Pereira in Matriz da Lagoa on 5 aug 1632

a place for a while and the priest would say they are from that place. But 
when they get specific as with baptismal info, they will state where they 
were actually baptised.

Those spellings must be the Spanish influence. Even Jesus had a z in its 
word.

The first name of his mother is Catarina. Maybe the last name of his father 
is Dias.

There's a couple Sebastião Dias and Catarina de Sousa in Ginetes in that 
time period.
You should try to find the baptism record for a Lazaro in Ginetes, son of 
Sebastião ...? and Catarina de Sousa. Lazaro is not a common name.

Here is what I have in my data base for what it is worth:

Lázaro de Sousa, of Ginetes, (son of Sebastião Dias and Catarina Sousa), and 
Maria Carvalho de Benevides, also of Ginetes, (daughter of Amaro Cardoso and 
Cardoso and Catarina Carvalho), were married in Ginetes on 7 Dec 1676. Amaro 
Caroso and Catarina Carvalho were married in Ginetes on 14 Oct 1647. She is the 
daughter of Gaspar Carvalho and Isabel Ferreira. The names of Amaro's parents 
are not noted in the record. Therese are my ancestors. They are documented both 
in Rodrigo Rodrigues and Carlos Machado. I hope this helps.

Erica it is difficult to make out, but could Miguel Sinseyra" ja defuncto" 
meaning he had already passed.  the first name is definitely Miguel. The 
only other name that I see it could be is Teixeira but I don't see an X.  
If it is Sinseyra or Sincerya, it is a very unusual name, not something I 
have seen before. I could be completely off, but trying to help. Sincerya 
seems right to me.

 Fortunately for us there are some on here who are very good at reading 
some of these more difficult records.  Good luck

Thanks Herb. I just found another record with Miguel listed in it. It is a 
little easier to read. I am now thinking it might say Simonez, which may be an 
earlier spelling for Simoes.
