Hi All:

Using Win 7 64 bit machine, IE8 and Jaws 12, NVDA 20011.2 and WE 7.5.1.

I would like to know more info on ARIA landmark elements.

If they are inserted into a web page, how to navigate different
elements on the page.

As I know very little about these elements, I would to know as much as
info as possible from the list members.

Also I wpould like to know how to use these elements with Jaws, NVDA
and Window-Eyes.

Thanks and regards,
Silpa.

Diagnosing from the other side of the world, I'm still not 100% confident
your computer is virus free, but you are the best judge of your computer's
health. :) Just for a little added protection, please take a the time to
run a thorough scan of your computer using the most recent and updated
version of malware bytes 1.6. Please run the full scan and not just the
quick scan.

If you feel confident that you are safe then please continue as is. HTH.

Hi Madison,
Well we ran every possible anti-virus programme but kept coming up with a
clean bill of health.

So went to the start-up under msconfig, and did what you suggested.
Like Magic it is now performing faster than I can ever remember.
Thank you so much for the advice, and giving me the confidence, to have a

Rather thrilled with myself.

Well, please write back and let us know what happens because your
problem and especially its solution can benefit us all as it will
increase the pool of knowledge on this list. Don't forget that you can
also run the Windows Malicious software removal tool. Go to run and type

follow the prompts making sure to read each dialogue in its entirety
with your jaws cursor and alike. The quick scan will take you about 3

If in fact you have 100+ items in MSConfig startup, and if they are
not legitament programs installed on your computer, it is very likely
your computer might be infected with a virus. The fact that all this
appears in MSConfig and the fact that your computer is running slow
are two traits of an infected computer.

Try this:
1. Look in your system tray. Are there tons of things running?
2. Try launching Google or going to the Norton, Eset, or MSE websites.
If you are not allowed access, it is likely the virus is preventing
you from going on line to use an on line antivirus scanner.
3. Go into MSConfig, in the start up tab, unload everything but jaws
and your antivirus and malware protection. If there is anything
essential you might disable,Windows will turn it on at bootup.

4. Restart your computer.

I think it is the amount of stuff on the start up menu but am afraid

Re: [Blind-Computing] Getting my windows 7 laptop to stay connected

2012-03-12 Thread dgcnc

Michael,

I just want to make sure I understand. You have a wireless network in your
location. You are choosing to connect wired with an ethernet cable to that
same network. You then want to disconnect the wire and just stay right where
you are and no hiccups but just continue working.

Unless somebody knows a way to make this happen, I don't think you can do
this. First, why would you connect by ethernet if you have a wireless
connection set up? Second, when connected by ethernet, that is not a
wireless connection. So, the wireless card turns off instead of constantly
trying to connect and lets your ethernet connection handle the traffic. The
computer assumes you want to connect by ethernet. Third, when you disconnect
the ethernet, you will have to tell the wireless card that you are again
ready to use it.

The solution? Use wireless all the time and put away your cable. Or, just
know that when you switch connection types, you will have to tell the
wireless system you want it to now work for this computer.

Does the wireless automatically connect if you turn the computer off and
then later turn it back on in your own house or space? It should do that.

I'm sorry Mike. I guess you're right in this instance. Its just that I find
it a bit selfish that very often listers offer to help their friends then
come post questions on these lists essentially turning everyone into their
tech support department when he list never offered to help that unknown
family member. Its one thing when a lister nees help, but its an entirely
different thing when list members volunteer this list to fix their friend's
computers. Also, even though your friend is not very knowledgeable about
computers or Google searches, you are, so if you offer to help it isn't fair
we all get dragged into this. I do agree with you on your point that if all
knew how to use Google we would not need these less. These lists seem to be
essential in the blind community because for the vast number of questions,
they can indeed be answered very quickly with a Google search. It appears
that blind folk like the notion of being a part of a group, so they spend
los of time on these lists. I signed up thinking I was an average computer
user and hoping to learn some new stuff, but it appears I'm answering more
questions than increasing my computer related knowledge. Just my thoughts.

to the list of networks, find mine and click connect. I want it to switch
over automatically. When I pull out the ethernet cable. I am running
windows 7 64 bit and jaws 11. Any help is appreciated.

Re: [Blind-Computing] need recommandation on external hard drives

2012-03-12 Thread Madison Espinoza

Hi David,

I'm very sorry to disagree, but I think you are very wrong on this point.

A hard drive has many factors to consider. Do you want to accidentally
purchase a Parallel ATA100 IDE hard drive when your computer motherboard
only supports sata? Most newer computers only support SATA drives.

Do you want to end up purchasing a 5400 RPM hard drive if your computer can
support a 7200 RPM much faster hard drive?

What if your computer is running Windows XP and cannot support the larger
500GB or 1 TB drives?

The other factor to consider is whether the hard drive will be used for
internal or external use. Since Melisa stated that she is going to use this
hard drive for external use, I would read the specs before making this
purchase. You want a 7200 RPM external H/D though the 5400 are less
expensive but will take longer to copy files. I would also look into western
digital as the manufacturer of the external drive. Do you have an external
hard drive enclosure already, or do you want the external with the enclosure
as one unit? Do you want USB 2.0 or can your computer use USB 3.0? Most
importantly, how long can you wait because right now hard drives are
extremely expensive. There have been very serious rain storms in the
Philippines where Western Digital manufactures their hard drives, and this
has caused the price of hard drives to explode. Typically, one can find a
5400 RPM 2 TB external drive for about $150. A 1TB for about $120 if you
shop around.

In short, please specify what you want and I'll run a quick search for you.

The majority of drives at this time are NTFS as that is a more efficient

expensive but will take longer to copy files. I would also look into
western
digital as the manufacturer of the external drive. Do you have an external
hard drive enclosure already, or do you want the external with the
enclosure
as one unit? Do you want USB 2.0 or can your computer use USB 3.0? Most
importantly, how long can you wait because right now hard drives are
extremely expensive. There have been very serious rain storms in the
Philippines where Western Digital manufactures their hard drives, and this
has caused the price of hard drives to explode. Typically, one can find a
5400 RPM 2 TB external drive for about $150. A 1TB for about $120 if you
shop around.

In short, please specify what you want and I'll run a quick search for
you.

Hi Dave,

Actually, the majority of external enclosure drives I've ever purchased for
myself and others come formatted as fat32. This makes sense since
manufacturers don't know the customer's operating system so going with Fat32
is a safe call.

Most drives sold nowadays are 7200 RPM, but lately many have considered the
5400 RPM drives since they are less expensive for the size they are getting.

I think whether for backup purposes or not a slow drive is a slow drive.
Couple this with a computer using USB 1.0 or 2.0, time becomes important if
one goes with a 5400 RPM HD rather than the much faster 7200 RPM.

come post questions on these lists essentially turning everyone into their

different thing when list members volunteer this list to fix their

all

be
essential in the blind community because for the vast number of questions,
they can indeed be answered very quickly with a Google search. It appears
that blind folk like the notion of being a part of a group, so they spend

One good thing about USB is that it is cross compatible. What that means is
you can plug a 3.0 drive in to any USB port and it will work but only to the
maximum speed of the given port in question.

Conversely you can plug a 1.1 drive in to a 3.0 port and it will work but
only at the 1.1 speed.

The only way to obtain the maximum speed for let's say a 3.0 drive is to
plug it in to a 3.0 port.

The rule of thumb is it will always default to the slowest link in the
chain.

Another example is if you have a 3.0 drive and a 3.0 port but use a 1.1
cable then it will perform at the 1.1 level.

Off hand I don't recall how to determine what the drive speed is without
checking the specifications. Also although 3.0 is the hottest interface
right now 2.0 isn't going to be bumped out completely as many devices do not
need that level of performance and it would be expensive to equip a system
with more than a couple of 3.0 ports.

Keyboards, mice are a couple of examples of devices that operate at a slow
speed, probably at the 1.1 level if memory serves.

2.0 USB, I'm safe to buy it. For what I use an external drive for, speed is

The majority of drives at this time are NTFS as that is a more efficient
format. Drive speed ETC depends on how much you wish to spend along with the
size of the drive.

External drives are normally used for backup purposes and as such speed is
not always a factor most of the time.

There is still more than just buy USB. the person's needs have to be

The subject line indicates an external hard drive, you're discussing
internal drives. There are many things to consider about internal drives I
agree but that is not what it seemed to me based on the subject.

External drives are almost totally USB to the computer so it doesn't
matter
what their actual interface needs might be.

Hi David,

I'm very sorry to disagree, but I think you are very wrong on this point.

A hard drive has many factors to consider. Do you want to accidentally
purchase a Parallel ATA100 IDE hard drive when your computer motherboard
only supports sata? Most newer computers only support SATA drives.

Do you want to end up purchasing a 5400 RPM hard drive if your computer
can
support a 7200 RPM much faster hard drive?

What if your computer is running Windows XP and cannot support the larger
500GB or 1 TB drives?

The other factor to consider is whether the hard drive will be used for
internal or external use. Since Melisa stated that she is going to use

First and foremost, I disagree with the gentleman that said it mattered what
type of hard drive manufacturer you decide to opt for.

Western Digital drives use Seagate drives, and the only thing you're
actually paying for is the name, so, you'll end up paying an extra 50 to 80
dollars just because you opted to go with a name brand rather than the
lesser known names like LACI or Razor, both of which use Seagate drives in
their enclosures.

In fact, the biggest consideration when purchasing an external drive is what
type of enclosure you'd like to get, either a self powered one, which means
forget about plugging it into a USB 1.0 port, or an enclosure that utilizes
an outside power source like an AC Adapter.

The second consideration is the type of interface you want to choose. For
the price the gentleman stated of 160 dollars, you'll end up paying for a 1
TB drive from Western Digital and you'll have to end up with a USB
connection, when, for the same price, you can shop around, not go with a
name brand drive, and get one with a higher seek time and RPM, multiple
interfaces like network connectivity, which means you'll be able to access
it across the board on all of your computers connected to the same network
independently of a second computer, or firewire and SCSI interfaces. Either
way, don't flush money down the toilet going for a name brand when the
enclosure is more apt to fail than the drive, assuming no accidents happen.

I just purchased a rugged 2.5 terabyte drive which can be dropped from a
height of three to four feet and it won't get damaged. It cost me all of
110 dollars at Best Buy, and it's a LACI drive, which, as I mentioned, uses
Seagate drives inside their enclosures.

Speaking of the drive I purchased, . I just remembered another
consideration you may want to consider, especially if you're going to be
sitting this drive on an unstable surface that rocks just from the typing
action of your keyboard.

Get a drive/enclosure that doesn't require it stand up on it's end, and must
lay down on it's side.

I don't want to tell you the number of horror stories I've heard of people
who've bumped their desks with their hips, *I mean, we are blind after all*,
and then hear a clunk when their hard drives tip over, then they're
surprised that they can't access their drives and it's ticking like a time
bomb. Smiles.

Either way, I would seriously not recommend you get a name brand drive like
Western Digital, and pick yourself up a more economical drive that is loaded
with features and not branding, I can almost guarantee you won't be
disappointed.

Hi friends,

Using Win XP IE 7 and Jfw 10.

I am a new comer to dropbox. So far I have managed to create an account,
put some files in the dropbox public folder which I found on My documents
folder. I also followed the instructions how to put a file in the public
folder. I would be very happy if some one can tell me how to create a HTTP
web link for this files. Because when I go on the web and enter my public
folder, all the files that I put are there, but they still have the normal
extentions, such as: letter.txt or song.mp3.

Thank you.

Here again a thumb drive is pretty much the same as any other drive other
than the fact they have much less storage capacity. So far as using them is
concerned they're like any other drive.

Just plug them in and they work, nothing to it.

Thank you for this good explanation. So, now I really don't have to worry
that my drive is going to become obsolete and if I find a great price on a
2.0 USB, I'm safe to buy it. For what I use an external drive for, speed is
not critical. My goal is to insure that I have multiple copies of some very
important files so only a true tragedy would destroy all of them. And, they
are not huge complicated files.

Thanks for being the first computer teacher I've ever had being this group.
