Re: [Blind-Computing] Survey for DOS Users

2010-10-11 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr

I don't know what you are trying to accomplish here. I haven't used dos
since 1998. When JAWS version 3 was issued, it was possible to use windows
95 and the Microsoft office programs. The 486 machine you mention has been
out of date for ten years. All of this technology has been significantly
updated, and is much easier to use. At this point, dos is of little more
than historical interest.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Survey for DOS Users

Geia sas/hello!

I've been posting this to various places. So I'm sorry if you've seen
it somewhere else. Please forgive me if I've asked some of these in
other posts here but I'm trying to gain an overall understanding and
to be as detailed as possible. If you no longer use DOS but have done
so in the past, just answer to the best of your ability. Since this
will be long, you may cut out my original post when responding.

Survey for DOS Users

This is a survey that I'm conducting for my own sake, in order to
learn about the use of DOS among the blind in the past and in the
present in order to help me in my own transition to this operating
system. Answer to the best of your ability and just skip whatever
doesn't apply.

Basics

What version of DOS are you using? I'm referring to number as well as
variety, example, MS-DOS 6.21, Enhanced DR-DOS 7.02 etc.

On what type of machine are you running DOS? Please include, if
possible, specifications on ram, processor speed and hard drive size.

For how long have you been a DOS user?

Blind-specific

Do you have any usable vision? This might affect what software you
can use, which may work with magnification but which may not be
accessible with screenreaders.

What screen access software are you using? Please include version
number if possible.

What kind of synthesizer are you using? Is it hardware or software?
If software, how did you enable it to work with DOS?

Software

I'm interested in learning what types of the following software you
use. Please include version along with name and whether or not it is
considered adaptive tech as some of these might be a bit obscure. If
you find that the software is not fully accessible, please let me
know.

OCR (for scanning printed documents): Please include the brand and
model of scanner used.

Wordprocessor or text editor:

Calculator:

Compact flash card reader: Please post it's file size limit if
applicable and it's general speed if possible.

Bar code scanner and software:

Internet access software: Pplease include what kind of internet
connection you use, your provider or at least type of service i.e.
shell accounht, ppp, cable etc., your browser and any drivers or
special software needed to actually connect to the internet itself
using your method.

Mp3 player and/or recorder

Cd player and/or burner:

Spreadsheet:

Accounting software:

Any other general business software that I've overlooked:

Antivirus:

Security: (firewall etc.)

Memory manager:

Multitasker or task switcher:

Shell or other directory utilities:

Battery checker (if using laptop):

Webpage creator:

Any other useful software for general opperations within the operating
system:

Modern DOS

These questions refer to those who either use a modern version of DOS
or who use newer software to enhance the capability of older versions.
Since I know the most about Enhanced DR-DOS (from here on referred to
as EDRD), in this regard, some will be specific to that variety. But
if you use another version with something equivalent, please let me
know.

I've heard that EDRD has a program that can serve as a multitasker in
machines with a processor higher than a 486 and as a task switcher in
machines with slower speeds. But how accessible is it with a
screenreader? Is one reader better than another for this purpose?
I'd like to know the same thing about it's memory manager.

I have a program for reading pdfs but haven't tried it yet. Has
anyone had success with a DOS pdf reader?

Which is currently more accesible, EDRD or FreeDOS?

Is there a large difference between the 16 and 32-bit versions of DOS?

For those who use the MicroSoft variety, what software do you use to
allow it to deal with modern formats?

Is there an accessible internet browser that can work with modern
pages containing forms

Hi listers. I am an RSS feeds junkie, and use the feed reader built into IE
8 to read the more than 100 feeds to which I am subscribed. When I first
launch IE 8 after I turn on my PC in the morning, web pages load quickly
without a hitch. But after I finish scrolling through my feeds list and
checking those marked as "new", web page loading slows down to the point
where pages either don't finish loading at all or I get the dreaded
"Internet Explorer Cannot Display the Web Page" error. Nothing I have tried
seems to resolve this issue, including running C-Cleaner, clearing the DNS
cache, changing my DNS server and running all manner of malware scans. The
only thing that restores IE 8 to normal is rebooting. So my question is
this: Is there any way to restore IE to the "pristine" condition it is in
after my PC is booted without actually having to reboot every time I
experience sluggish web page loading? I am running XP Pro with JAWS 9.
Thanks.

You may be dealing with an ADA issue here. I am aware that some
post-secondary schools have taken the position that PDF instructional

Take the issue up with your disability services office at your school. If

Hi
My college is trying to convert all their online classes to PDF

documents are password protected. I don't know of any OCR that will work

How do I deal with these PDF Textbooks. They are even worse then the regular

Well, any way I would appreciate any ideas on how to over come the document

Re: [Blind-Computing] MAINTAINING THE ORDER OF MULTIPLE FILES ON A DISK

2009-10-27 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr
This approach will also work in keeping multiple documents in date order in
a folder.

If you use the format 2009 10 27 at the beginning of the file name the
documents will be in date order. Remember to make this work the month must
be two digits; in other words February is not 2, it is 02.

I'm not sure how many of you will find this helpful but it took me so long
to sort it out, I decided to share my experience in hopes that I can save
someone else the grief.

here's the scenario.
You have a CD you are creating and you want to keep the files in order. In
my case, they were chapters in a book I had written. I tried everything but
for some odd reason, the files would be loaded in some kind of random order.
I tried labeling them with numbers having multiple digits such as: chapter
001.mp3
No, that didn't work and Chapter 17 ended up right after Chapter 1 and
Chapter 2 ended somewhere in the pack.
Then I remembered the way that Freedom Scientific labels their files on a
training disk. The numbers have to be first and they must be absolutely
precise.
That's the only way. here's an example of how I finally labeled those
chapters and they stayed in the correct order.

1.1 CHAPTER 1.MP3
1.2 CHAPTER 2.MP3
1.3 CHAPTER 3.MP3

Apparently, when you use the List command available from the View menu, the
files appear in order but they don't stay that way unless the decimal system
is used. if you have several books on the same disk, either divide them
into folders or use a progressive system.

My book has four parts so I used 1.xx for the first section, 2.xx for the
next and so on.
For some brainyacs like Rick and David, this may be second nature. But for
someone like me who is more of a writer than a computer person, I was so
relieved when my method finally succeeded. My thanks to the people at
Freedom Scientific for giving me the idea.

it was David who introduced me to the View menu and told me how to list
files in any folder.
While in the folder but without an open file, press Alt V for the View menu.
Then, to arrange the files in a list, press the L key and the list will be
displayed.

Try this:

If you go into the existing folder, bring up the file menu. There should be
a selection called new; hit enter and one of the next list of choices should
include "folder. Hit enter; then I think there will be a selection "new
folder." Type the name of what you want your folder to be called and hit
enter. Once the new folder is created, go to the files you want to move into

It will say zero items. Then hit control V for paste, and your files should
then be in the new folder you have created.

I'm advising somebody on where best to create a blog. I looked at Blogger,
and with JAWS 10, I couldn't activate the OnMouseOver which brings up the
spell checker. I have heard that WordPress is more accessible. For this
user, an easy environment will be better. What is the experience on this
matter?

Re: [Blind-Computing] Transferring data from one computer to another

2009-05-02 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr.
That will depend on which email program you use. For outlook, you have to
export what you want to save into a folder and then save that folder to a
flash drive or some type of external hard drive. Then you can import that
saved folder into the outlook program on the destination computer.

Re: [Blind-Computing] RE backing up files

2009-04-22 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr
Yes; if you are going to backup to a CD you would need a program to burn the
CD. Usually, I back up files to a flash drive and then put those files into
another computer to back them up.

Okay, I'm a little confused . After a file has been pasted to the D drive,
how do you actually create the backup CD? Do you need a separate CD burner
program? I've never seen any burner options in the menus for My Computer or

Windows Explorer. Sorry if I sound like a real dope.

Re: [Blind-Computing] RE backing up files

2009-04-22 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr
To back up a file:

Go to my computer;
Select the file or folder you want to back up;
Alt C to copy what has been selected;
Go to the file or drive where you want to save what has been copied;
Hit control V to paste the copied material into that file.

Caution:
If you are using a flash drive as your backup destination, make sure that
there is enough space on that flash drive to hold the material you are
copying.

Are there any tutorials that explain exactly how to back up files onto a CD,

Re: [Blind-Computing] question

2009-04-12 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr.
If I understand yur question, when you encounter a pdf file, you want to
save it where you can find it and then use conversion software to open it.

If you are in internet explorer, hit the right mouse button key on the file
name; then jaws will say "save target as"; at tthat point type the file name
that you want to use and make sure the file extenstion is pdf. After you
close out of internet explorer, locate your saved file and use whatever
conversion software you use to open the file and then save the opened file
in word or however you like to save files you will read in the future.
