Joseph, this is certainly not a Macromedia response but a Mike Brunt (a lowly consultant) response. I think your email was well stated and it has generated some really healthy open debate. Try using VNC (http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/). It is a java-based program that was written by AT&T that basically does what PCA does, but it is FREE, FREE, FREE! Seems to work pretty well. You can even to a remote reboot with it. We have been playing around with it after seeing a co-location client of ours using it. It is VERY slick. You may want to do some research on BugTraq to make sure it is safe, but I really like it. Re: WARNING: PCAnywhere
I'll second the use of VNC. We utilize terminal server with our Win2K servers, but we run VNC as a backup. The reason is that it allows us to remote access the servers through any Internet Browser (i.e. the win98 Laptop while on vacation). It also allows us to access the servers in the event that terminal services locks up. For example, a while back we had a corrupt datasource that caused a large memory leak. We could not remote the server via Terminal Services, but we were able to access it via VNC. It has both a desktop and a web interface and runs pretty smooth. RE: Is CF still relevant?
Joseph, Great questions. If you asked me 6 months ago, I would answer you by saying that the reason I use CF primarily is because it is a great RAD tool. Today, I am thinking about how cool it will be to leverage my CF experience once CF is tied to Flash better (better than Harpoon). The thought of this alone gets my heart racing.A couple of years ago, M$ introduced their "Agent" ActiveX component that allowed you to have a little character (like those annoying M$ Office Assistants) that you could script to make talk. I thought that this was pretty neat, but it required a slow download, and the performance was hideous. Also, you were stuck with the characters that M$ developed. With Flash working better with CF, you could create some compelling agents, IM programs, distance learning tools, training programs, and more. There is probably a lot of potential here that we have not even thought of yet. So the Flash potential and also UltraDev's *potential* have me excited. Those are my hopes for CF. My fears are: - How well will CF be integrated with UltraDev? - How well will CF be integrated with Flash? And I don't mean little Harpoon calendars. - Will MM fix/improve the advanced security features of CF? The "Users --> Groups --> Policies" security model is cludgy. - Will MM or Version 5.0 improve/automate remote file management? By this I mean that I would like for CF to allow me to manage files on the server much like FrontPage extensions do. You rename a file, and all of the links to the file get renamed. FP is a newbie tool, but this is a HUGE time saver when you have a really big site to manage. - Will MM lower the cost of the server? The pro version should cost $599.00. - How will the real world performance be with the Java-based "NEO" (CF version 6.0). I know they say it is faster, but I am just worried. - How soon will 5.0 be out? User defined functions and querying a query will be awesome. The User defined functions alone will add tremendously to the CF community once you can download custom functions (loan calculators, etc.). Just my 2 cents. RE: WARNING: PCAnywhere
> I'll second the use of VNC. I'll third it. :) We've been using VNC exclusively for over 2 years, with nothing but success, on NT and Win2K machines. Copying and pasting between client and server is much more convenient than with PCA, since the clipboard is automatically transferred, and the speed has always been as fast or faster than PCA. Remote reboots are always reliable, unless there's a hardware problem (we use a remote power cycler for that). The new version of VNC allows you to scale the screen, so you can display 4 or more full-size server desktops on one screen (handy if you're addicted to watching the task manager graphs). Final hint: make shortcuts with your VNC connections (there's an option to save your password), put 'em in your Start menu, and you can launch windows with your servers' desktops in about 2 seconds. On a side note. I found this by an e-mail on the WIN-NT list. http://www.famatech.com/ It's called RAdmin. Costs 35.00 per license. It is at least 5 times as fast on screen redraws on NT. Even when the traffic on the server is heavy it's almost as fast as sitting at the server itself. It has a better file transfer mode than pcA, you can reboot the host without logging in and it has Telnet mode. I've stayed connected all day since I installed it. pcA always drops me when the traffic on the server gets heavy and I have to use the cfx_servicecontrol tag to restart it. Timbuktu is cross platform as well, in fact that is where Timbuktu came from, an engine to allow Macs to drive each other and then they brought in Win boxen later. We have been using Timbuktu here for a couple of years, no hassles whatsoever but we did have problems with VNC, admittedly an earlier version, partly stability but also that fact that you could not turn off backgrounds made it slow and upped the network traffic a _lot_ We also have a couple of clients that insist on having PCA on their co-lo boxes, and it is not unusual for one to ring and ask us to restart things :-) -- Yours, Kym ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. one of the sites I'm involved in serves about 8 million pages a month, well over half of them requiring a database connection (most of these will have more than one query) and the site runs on a dual processor pentium III with win2000 and SQL Server 7 - no problems. Just make sure you spend a lot of time optimizing the server for performance and most importantly, stick a load of RAM into it, at least 1 GB. I seperate IIS and SQL Server 2000 as a matter of course, but I am not at all convinced you need to on a machine of the right specification - notably 1Gb+ RAM and a couple of fast CPU's. Even redundancy isn't a reason to run two seperate servers, because if either of the servers and/or the ODBC/OLEDB connection across the network goes down, the entire site is down anyway. I would be interested in more views on this issue. Adrian Cooper. ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. Re: Updating 1000s of records
you could add a SQL server scheduled task to bulk insert (see BULK INSERT command in SQL server docs) into a temporary table from your text file and then use the data in the temp table to update the user info. Just moves the processing from CF onto SQL server, which will definitely improve performance. Even if you run both the BULK INSERT and UPDATE commands from a CF template, it'll still improve your performance considerably (only two database connections and queries now). RE: SQL SERVER and IIS on the same machine?
Hi Michael, We have been using IIS 5.0 & SQL 7.0 on the same machine for about a year. No real problems, but now our traffic levels are much higher we have had to upgrade the memory to 1GB. We will be looking into moving the SQL to it's own server soon. For lower traffic sites I do not see a problem, however be aware that CPU usage is much higher on server with this configuration. I'm trying to find the best way to have SQL do this: IF COLUM1 already contains "VALUE" then UPDATE COLUM2+1 IF NOT, INSERT COLUM1,COLUM2 VALUES ("VALUE",1) Currently I'm using SELECT / RecordCount to first find out if the VALUE exists. RE: UPDATE / INSERT
Micheal, Thinking about it, if the value does exist and you simply want to check what that value is before updating, you could always do an update irrespective of the value, sure, this will mean doing an un-necessary update sometimes, but isn't that better than making two connections (select & update) if the update is required. RE: Was AW: WARNING: PCAnywhere -> PCAnywhere functions on a linux box ?
I've set up VNC on a headless box to get XWindows access... you need to make sure you have your server set up and running correctly. I haven't played with it since I got my switchbox working, so that's about the best help I can provide. If memory serves correctly I had to set up the server to create an instance of xWindows. KDE didn't come up directly. Something else *NIX fans might look into is remote xWindows servers. These are programs that access a box directly and connect as an extra terminal. The "servers" (I can't remember why that is the correct syntax, but it confused me too) aren't free, but I know from first hand experience that they can be made to work. You can even set it up so that you log in directly through KDE. RE: UPDATE / INSERT
You need to set your table to have COLUM1 have a value 0 assigned by default, this is possible in SQL not sure about other dbs. When a record is created, COLUM1 will be automatically assigned a value of 0 by default. So, if you always do an update, the value will be updated even if you have not previously assigned a value. RE: UPDATE / INSERT
Do you mean if the record exists UPDATE, or if the value in the column is specified update? If the record does not exist, use cftry/cfcatch: try UPDATE, if fails do INSERT. If the record exists but value is NULL, you are probably better off setting the columns default value to zero, this way you will always be able to increment the value by 1 using UPDATE. RE: Setting form var with Java
FWIW, it's cleaner to simply pass in the object itself rather than its name. Here's how I'd write it: function changevalue(Field) { var oldvalue; var newvalue; oldvalue = Field.value; TAKE ACTION HERE Field.value = newvalue; } and here's an example of how to pass in the Field object: -David On Wednesday, April 18, 2001 12:30 PM, Bruce, Rodney [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] wrote: > Thanks for all the suggestions > > The one I got to work was Mark's below. > > > Thanks again > -Original Message- > From: Mark Rowntree [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Wednesday, April 18, 2001 9:15 AM > To: CF-Talk > Subject: Re: Setting form var with Java > > > try: > > document.forms[FormName].elements[FieldName].value > > Let me know. > > Mark Rowntree ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. RE: UPDATE / INSERT
OK, u.recordcount could be 0 if the record you are expecting to find does not exist or if the value of DT in that record does not match your criteria. Your code will create a new record if either of the above is true. If this is what you want I can't really see a better way of doing it. Will CFCATCH/CFTRY with DATABASE error be a better solution? i.e - TRY TO UPDATE no matter what -> if error occurs (row not exists) -> INSERT. RE: UPDATE / INSERT
The method I have used for using CFTRY/CFCATCH is for when I want to update a column if the record exists, if not then create the record. However I would only use this if you expect the update to succeed more than fail, the reason for this is that an entry is made to application.log each time the update fails. Even though your application.log should be checked and cleared regularly, I found that in a short space of time the size of the log increased greatly. Still not sure whether CF should write to the log as the error has been handled, argument here for whether this is bug in CF. This was a problem for me due to very high levels of traffic. Here's the code anyway: UPDATE logs SET DN=DN+#DN# WHERE DT=#DT# INSERT INTO logs (DN,DT) VALUES (#DN#,#DT#) HTH Phil. > -Original Message- > From: Michael Lugassy [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: 22 April 2001 16:59 > To: CF-Talk > Subject: Re: UPDATE / INSERT > > > Will CFCATCH/CFTRY with DATABASE error be a better solution? > i.e - TRY TO UPDATE no matter what -> if error occurs (row not exists) -> > INSERT. > Is this better then SELECT? > > :) > > - Original Message - > From: "Phil Ewington" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: "CF-Talk" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Sent: Sunday, April 22, 2001 4:29 PM > Subject: RE: UPDATE / INSERT > > > > OK, u.recordcount could be 0 if the record you are expecting to > find does > > not exist or if the value of DT in that record does not match your > criteria. > > Your code will create a new record if either of the above is > true. I use cfx_image which automatically creates a thumbnail (or any other size you want). It uses image.dll. The properties tab say it was made by Cap Gemini and copyright by Jukka Manner. It looks to me like CF_GIFGD is the successor to this. It is in the gallery, by the same author, and does thumbnails and lots of other stuff. RE: SQL SERVER and IIS on the same machine?
It really depends I did it for a long time. Never had major problems. HOwever when I finally moved SQL to it's own server I did have performance improvements, used less memories and had fewer errors. Not that there was a major problem while SQL was on the same server it just performs better when it's not. The big thing is to just monitor it. And set your SQL memory not to go over a certain limit, because it really has an appetite for memory otherwise. -Original Message- From: Michael Lugassy [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, April 22, 2001 5:40 AM To: CF-Talk Subject: SQL SERVER and IIS on the same machine? What are the specifics of your client machine setup? We've been running into similar problems on machines running Windows 2000 Pro machines and Photoshop 6. Complete inability to open new TCP/IP connections, whether FTP, HTTP, lan. We upgraded one machine to Photoshop 6.0.1 and so far it seems like it may have solved the problem. uploaded files
I have an application which allows clients to upload various files which can later me accessed via the web. My concern is that if the uploaded file has a .cfm extension, when it is reviewed post upload, it could actually execute malicious code on the server. I guess the same would hole true with a .exe file (except that execute privileges are disabled). I need to allow a wide range of acceptable upload types, so I can't restrict it at the upload stage. What would be the best way to allow some one to access these files post upload while not posing a security threat? Business Objects and Cold Fusion
My client has just acquired Business Objects for their WEB based reporting system. Does anyone have any experience with interfacing with this tool from Cold Fusion? I understand it is possible to do so? Business Objects and Cold Fusion are both running on Solaris platforms against Oracle 8i databases. Re: SQL SERVER and IIS on the same machine?
I think the most important issue is "Security". If we put IIS and SQL Server on the same machine it could be a dissaster whenever your IIS is being hacked. By separating ISS and SQL Server we make difficult for hacker to exploit what ever we have. Mostly we use local ip address between IIS and SQL server. ~~ Structure your ColdFusion code with Fusebox. Repost Cftree and unicode
I have asked this a few days ago but I'm not sure it made it to the list. Is it possible to display unicode in cftree? Based on our tests cftree doesn't properly display unicode (being a Java applet is should) I was wondering if somebody was able to do it. If not, will the Flash components developed by Figleaf display it correctly and if yes when will they be available to the public? RE: What is WDDX?
> I've heard a lot of talk about WDDX but i'am unclear as to > what it is, what is it used for? Can anyone explain? Or recomend > a site with tutorials and information? WDDX is an open-source XML DTD originally created by Allaire to describe generic data objects (arrays, structures, recordsets, strings, numbers, dates and so forth). You can take an object in CF and use the CFWDDX tag to create a WDDX packet, which is an XML-compliant document that can be later deserialized back into a native data object in CF or in other languages. That's a pretty buzzword-thick explanation, so here's an example. You might use WDDX to exchange data between servers, by having one server generate WDDX output when a certain URL is requested, and having another server request that URL via CFHTTP, then retrieve and deserialize the data. So, essentially, you could pass the results of a database query between two servers. You can pass nearly anything you like. That's just one thing you can do with WDDX. When are you escaping it? Before you serialize it, right? If not, that's your problem. If you want to show some code, that might help.
