OT? Macromedia Spectra

2001-08-31 Thread Tyson Vanek

So I'm wondering now what the official situation with Spectra is? My
company is currently talking about designing a content management tool to
use for our clients. The more and more we talk about it, the more and more
I'm reminded of Spectra. I'd hate to re-invent the wheel at this point.

I noticed the Spectra Community site that launched, which is great. But, is
it still possible now for companies to purchase Spectra? Is it now
available as a free download instead? If I did have to purchase it, is that
even an option and is it at the same cost it was previously sold at?

I'm still not quite clear what the scenario is here. Any MACR reps care to
comment on this?

Thanks in advance,
Tyson

RE: Question about retrieving Oracle CLOBs into a CF variable

2001-08-31 Thread Jeff Britts

We had the same issue with getting gibberish.

What we found was that if you insert a record into a table with a clob, you
need to set the value of the clob on insert, even if its an empty string.

If you insert a record without including a value for the clob, your select
against that row will seem to draw data from the fourth dimension.

We're using clobs with native drivers all the time.

You should be able to just do select clob_column from table [where]. We had
a problems using clob and retrieving erroneous data or gibberish. Not sure
if it was related to Native drivers or what the issue was exactly. So we
changed to Long datatype and everything works great. Good luck. LOL

Subject: Question about retrieving Oracle CLOBs into a CF variable

Folks,

In one CF template I insert a very long string (e.g. 1 bytes) into a
CLOB column of a new row in an Oracle table. (Actually the CLOB is the
string resulting from a CFWDDX tage that converts a CF structure of
structures to a string.).
I do this insert by using the CFQUERYPARAM tag to force CF to generate a
bind variable like Oracle wants for CLOBs.

Now, in another CF template I need to retrieve it. My question is, how
Can I simply say select clob_column from table wherecondition is true?
Can I then refer to QueryName.clob_column and get the whole humoungous
string? Or do I need to force CF to use bind variables again? If so how do I
do that in a select statement? Can I say select clob_column into
cfqueryparam value=#local_cf_variable# from table where condition is
true Does that work?

Can anyone advise? I will be most appreciative of any help.

Thanks,

If you're using oracle, you could so something like this:

SELECTSUM(DECODE(abstype, 'E', 1, 'U', 1, 0)) AS totalabsences

In plain english, this says:
If abstype = 'E' then add 1 to totalabsences,
elseif abstype = 'U' then add 1 to totalabsences,
else add zero to totalabsences

You can add additional lines to it like this one:
SUM(DECODE(abstype, 'T', 1, 0)) AS totaltardies,
SUM(DECODE(abstype, 'E', 1, 0)) AS totalexcused,
SUM(DECODE(abstype, 'U', 1, 0)) AS totalunexcused
FROMyourtable
WHEREyourconditions

If you're using ACCESS, you do this with iif. I can look up the syntax if
you need it. If you're using mssql, I can't help ya.

I think you just need to add something to your WHERE
clause.

For example, if you just want to count U+E, use

WHERE ((T_ABS.ABSDATE = T_Quarter.BegQuarter) AND
  (T_ABS.ABSDATE = T_Quarter.EndQuarter))
AND (
(T_ABS.ABSType = 'U')
OR
(T_ABS.ABSType = 'E')
  )

So my query does fine in the sense that it counts
 how many T/E/U each
student has. The next step is to add E+U= Total
 Absences
I assume it needs to happen outside the query?

RE: Speak Up...

2001-08-31 Thread Matt Brown

Matt,
I had another conversation with MM yesterday with Dave Emmon (sic?) and I
pointed out that the EAPI for apache was not supported in CF 5 either and
was told that MM considers Win32 apache to be beta software [snip] beta
status and that when 2.0 is out of beta it
will be supported.

I take the lack of support for beta software and the small user base as
positioning statement and an attempt to set expectation. I would like to
point out (and maybe you can be in the meeting) that the manual does
contains installation instructions for apache and does not say anything
about it being beta and unsupported.

I will not be in the meeting, but I know from a couple of people that this
is an issue. I will bring up your points to the PM now and see what can be
done. We are doing our best here and I thank you for bearing with us for
the time being.

You can still purchase it, but 1.5.1 will be the last major release in its
current format (all fixed and updates etc.. will be got thru the SCSS). I
think the current app is supported for another 2 years; as for cost I think
its the same - can't be sure though.

The future, well the major components of the COAPI are being integrated at
the Java level into Neo - CF6; so we will have to wait and see, but the
future does look good. I was very disappointed when I heard they were
dropping it but as it turns out it is a blessing IMHO

RE: case sensitive sql query

2001-08-31 Thread cf refactoring

SQL Queries ARE NOT case sensitive when doing a WHERE
that involves a varchar.
They should be unless there's been a nonstandard
implementation of SQL. I'm not familiar with SQL
Server, so I don't know about that, but on Oracle it
doesn't matter whether the underlying column type is
CHAR or VARCHAR -- it's always case sensitive.

 clause depends largely on the
database that you are using. If you are using SQL
 Server 7/2000 then it is
quite simple. It is even more simple if you are
 using Stored Procedures to
perform this task. Just use CAST to force your
 value to binary data and
then compare based on the returned binary data.
 CAST(ColumnName AS
 VARBINARY(ColumnLength)) = CAST('Test Query' AS
 VARBINARY(ColumnLength)) in
your WHERE within your Stored Procedure. Once you
 have that set, just make
the 'Test Query' string in your Stored Procedure
 into a @sp_variable and
pass in the value you are searching on. CAST is
 preferred over CONVERT.

SQL SELECT queries ARE case sensitive.

The problem is in your data -- you're using
 columnames
from your tables as data. Depending on the database,
this information is stored in auxiliary tables (in
Oracle, it would be in a table like
 all_tab_columns), and may be in a case-insensitive
form. For example, in Oracle, if I run

 select column_name, table_name from all_tab_columns

then I see that all the column_names and table_names
are all uppercase even though when I created the
tables, I had mixed case for the table and column
 names

RE: fieldnames structure

2001-08-31 Thread Raymond Camden

Form.Fieldnames is a list of all the form fields. You want just Form.
Also, you can't place a structure in a form field like that, it's not a
simple string. You can, however, convert the form structure to a wddx packet
and put _that_ in a form field.

CFSET Form.Foo = 1
CFWDDX ACTION=CFML2WDDX INPUT=#Form# OUTPUT=Formpacket

FORM
CFOUTPUT
INPUT TYPE=hidden NAME=OldData VALUE=#FormPacket#
/CFOUTPUT
/FORM

You may want to URL encode FormPacket to ensure no line breaks are in.

What's the best way to do this? I thought I could just do something like:

That's not going to work, because a structure can't be simply written to a
string, as you're trying to do. If you want to pass data from one page, to
the next, it'll have to be string data of some type. You could use WDDX to
convert complex objects (arrays, structures, queries) to strings, then write
the WDDX strings to your form fields, then convert them back to complex
objects using CFWDDX in the action page. Or, you could use the Session scope
to store the data persistently.

RE: fieldnames structure

2001-08-31 Thread Tyson Vanek

Deana,

You're close. The FORM scope itself is actually just one big structure,
which means you can copy it and pass it along. You'll likely, however, need
to convert it to something that can be passed in the form hidden field - I'd
recommend WDDX. Try something like this.

!--- copy the form scope from the previous page submission ---
cfset stcPage1 = structCopy(form)
!--- encode it as a WDDX packet ---
cfwddx action=cfml2wddx input=#stcPage1# output=wstcPage1
!--- embed it in the form on page 2 ---
cfoutput
input type=hidden name=stcPage1 value=#wstcPage2#
/cfoutput

This will pass the struct as a WDDX packet named wstPage1. In order to
access the values of the struct on the next page, you'll need to
de-serialize it first, like this (this would be in the submit logic on page
2):

cfwddx action=wddx2cfml input=#form.wstcPage1# output=stcPage1

Then you should be able to reference fields from page one in the following
manner:

cfoutput
#stcPage1.strFormField1#br
#stcPage1.strFormField2#br
/cfoutput

Hope this helps,
Tyson

RE: Prepared statements

2001-08-31 Thread Dave Watts

I have two questions. When you set up a dsn in the CF there
is a check box that says Create stored procedures for prepared
statements. Do I need to check that box to get cfquery's to
 work that include cfqueryparam's?

No.

Second question, if it does create a stored proc for my query
would I just continue to run the query with the cfqueryparam
or would I need to run it as a stored procedure?

You'd continue to run your query as before.

Re: The biggest cfmail message?

2001-08-31 Thread tom muck

Most HTML messages that are sent out are done this way. It's much easier on
the mail server and the email reader if the images aren't included in the
body. If you must include them, I posted some code here a couple months
back that you may be able to use. As far as limits, there are no known
limits. A lot of users have limited space in their inbox, though,
especially people with free email accounts.

RE: case sensitive sql query

2001-08-31 Thread Justin Greene

If I remember correctly, when MS SQL Server is installed one determines
whether the DBs will be case sensitive or case insentitive. If the former
is selected, you have to cast or convert everything to upper or lower case
when doing compares as 'a' != 'A'. This of course forces table scans as
placing any sort of evaluation on the left side of the = prevent the use of
an index and you cannot force an index to be case insensitive (I think you
can do this in Oracle). I suspect that the reverse is true in the below
example. If you are casting your varchar as case sensitive, it may not be
able to use the indexes properly. I am not positive, but it is worth
looking into if the tables are large as it will cause a performance hit.

SQL Queries ARE NOT case sensitive when doing a WHERE that involves a
varchar. The way to do a Case sensitive WHERE clause depends largely on the
database that you are using. If you are using SQL Server 7/2000 then it is
quite simple. It is even more simple if you are using Stored Procedures to
perform this task. Just use CAST to force your value to binary data and
then compare based on the returned binary data. CAST(ColumnName AS
VARBINARY(ColumnLength)) = CAST('Test Query' AS VARBINARY(ColumnLength)) in
your WHERE within your Stored Procedure. Once you have that set, just make
the 'Test Query' string in your Stored Procedure into a @sp_variable and
pass in the value you are searching on. CAST is preferred over CONVERT.

SQL SELECT queries ARE case sensitive.

The problem is in your data -- you're using columnames
from your tables as data. Depending on the database,
this information is stored in auxiliary tables (in
Oracle, it would be in a table like
all_tab_columns), and may be in a case-insensitive
form. For example, in Oracle, if I run

select column_name, table_name from all_tab_columns

then I see that all the column_names and table_names
are all uppercase even though when I created the
tables, I had mixed case for the table and column
names

RE: The biggest cfmail message?

2001-08-31 Thread Daniel Lancelot

few reasons

1: Bandwidth on your mailserver

Depending on the number of recipients your webserver is probably far better
optimized for serving images, than your mail server is of sending large
numbers of large emails - and the load would be far more distributed as
people read their mail, rather than all in one batch when they get sent.
(also with any bounced messages - the original email is often attached - and
could put additional unneccessary strain on your mailserver)

2: Initial Time to display email

Although in absolute terms you're right - it probably take longer to go
fetch the images from the live site, the email would appear readable to the
recipient as soon as all the mail is recieved - and the images could
download in the background as the mail is being read.

3: User Impatience

Depending on the file size, and the users bandwidth, they may not be
prepared to wait for ages for some unknown massive email to download -
whereas when they have it in their inbox they know what it is...

4: Cheapo ISP's restricted mailbox sizes...

Some ISP's have really low size limits on their mailbox size - and will
bounce messages that won't fit - My old uni only gave 300kb - though I think
most commercial ISP's are better...

Efficient Query Manipulation?

2001-08-31 Thread Gonzo Rock

I am rather new at CF and am trying to decide how to go about manipulating sets of
records in a database.

1)Use cached queries
-- OR --
2)Build an array.

My dilemma goes like this...

- A user Queries the database and gets a set of say 50 to 100 records in a list. On of
the fields retrieved is the SEQUENCE of the record in the list.
- Next the user both inserts new items into and deletes current items from this list
until they are satisfied with the contents of the list.

I can update the database on each insert or deletion, modifying many records to update
the SEQUENCE value of the records. (An obvious Downside is lots of database activity)

-- OR --

My most current thinking is that stuffing the Query into an Array would be a good
idea... Then I could manipulate the Array, inserting and deleting rows until a time
where the user would commit the Array. (An obvious Downside is loss of all work done
in the session if the App/OrSomethingElse crashes.)

Is this an acceptable practice?

Are there techniques?

What's the view from the Brainiacs on this list?

Re: The biggest cfmail message?

2001-08-31 Thread Howie Hamlin

One additional not regarding imaged served by mail server as opposed to web servers -
web servers send images in raw format (8-bit)
so a 30k images will be delivered in 30k bytes. A mail server sends mail in 7 bit
format so the image needs to be MIME-encode in
the email. MIME encoding typically adds 50-100% to the size of the image so you would
be delivering 45-60k of data for the 30k
image.

Some ISP's have really low size limits on their mailbox size - and will
bounce messages that won't fit - My old uni only gave 300kb - though I think
 most commercial ISP's are better...

Re: The biggest cfmail message?

2001-08-31 Thread Howie Hamlin

OMG - I need typing lessons...that should have read:

One additional note regarding images served by mail servers as opposed to web servers
- web servers send images in raw format
(8-bit)
so a 30k image will be delivered in 30k bytes. A mail server sends mail in 7 bit
format so the image needs to be MIME-encoded in
the email. MIME encoding typically adds 50-100% to the size of the image so you would
be delivering 45-60k of data for the 30k
image.

Sorry,

RE: fieldnames structure

2001-08-31 Thread Alex Santantonio

as an addendum to the idea that I sent along, you will need to do some
additional work if you are including any checkboxes in your initial form.
Use CFPARAM NAME=FORM.checkboxname DEFAULT=defaultvalue at the top of
the resulting page to set the checkbox value if the user didn't check it,
and then you will need to do a LISTAPPEND(FORM.fieldnames, checkboxname) to
include that form name in the field names since CF will not see the checkbox
if it isn't selected, and will not automatically insert the name into the
fieldnames list when you use the CFPARAM. Just FYI.

What's the best way to do this? I thought I could just do something like:
input type=hidden name=page1struct
value=#structcopy(form.fieldnames)# But that throws an error.

 Hello,

I'm developing an application were our computer labs can track usage and
statistics on the machines that are used in there. What I'm looking for
is
this. Students check in with their ID cards and are asigned a machine.
The
application then tracks who's on what machine and tracks the time, etc.
I'd like to place an agent on each machine that talks back to the
application, and when flagged, say, if the student's time is up, I can
have
pop up a message telling them time's up. Kinda along the lines of the old
Novel network messaging system where you could send a message in a popup
box
to any other machine on the network. Is anybody doing anything like this?
If so, what are you using for the agent on the client machines?

 Thanks,
 Dave

RE: CFMAIL Performance...

2001-08-31 Thread ChristianWatt

Sorry about the delay...been gone a couple of days. it depends on the time.
If you look in the IMAIL book, the is a registery setting to increase the
number of smtp32.exe connections, which is how many messages it can process
at one time. I have that set at 100. When you first start the send, Imail
will open just about all of them, but after CF stops dumping mail into the
spool, Imail slows down to about 15 - 25 every time. I overcome this by
manually sending additional messages with the queue viewer in Imail which
will start another smtp32.exe instance. I usually pump those up to 75-80 at
a time, that way the best I can figure is you send around 100 messages a
minute, depending on the size of the message and how long it takes to find
the domain.

As for delayed responses, I have seen mail servers send back undevs up to a
week, and sometimes longer, after all of the messages are emptied out of my
mail spool. So that you something you have no control over.

OLE-DB Client Storage Problem

2001-08-31 Thread Dina Hess

Can anyone explain why I'm getting an error when trying to set up my OLE-DB data store
for client variable storage?

The data source provider is Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0.
Verify status is OK.

I checked off Create Client database tables which generated: Error: Invalid
Selection
Unknown database type - Unable to create client tables Please uncheck Create Client
Tables.

So I unchecked it and moved on. The data store is now listed in Client Variables as a
Native Data Source type; the Registry shows the type as ODBC. But I have this data
store set up as OLE-DB. ???

I really wanted to use my OLE-DB data store for client variable storage. But, as a
workaround, I had to set up a separate ODBC data store to do that. It works fine...but
seems inefficient.

What am I doing wrong? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dina

Using CFMAIL

I am trying to use CFMAIL to sent emails from the web site. The
page itself runs fine.
The part I need help in is, how does CF log on to he web server?
I have entered the web server in CF admin. Get no errors when web
page that generates the mail is run. So unless I am off base, I think that
the CF server needs an account on the web server. This itself is not a
problem, but how do you get CF to log into the email account?

Even users have to long on separately to their email accounts (after logging
onto the LAN). Unlike I think most company LANs, when the user signs on,
they get access to their email.

Or am I going about this all wrong.

Re: Using CFMAIL

2001-08-31 Thread Howie Hamlin

CF needs to be configured to use a separate mail server. You set this up in the
administrator under miscellaneous/mail option. In
there you need to enter the mail server (cname or ip address can be used although ip
address is suggested). You also need to set up
the server port (this is 25 by standard). After entering this information you click
on the verify button to verify that the
connection to the mail server can be made by cf.

Once you set this up you should be able to use cfmail.

RE: Efficient Query Manipulation?

2001-08-31 Thread Bryan Love

It is not very efficient to convert query results to an array. The overhead
involved is completely avoidable. More often than not the database machine
will be more powerful (and reliable) than the CF server. When you are faced
with a decision between loading up the DB machine or the CF machine I would
choose the DB machine every time.

You may also want to modify the interface...

Place a checkbox next to each row containing that row's ID and have multiple
submit buttons at the bottom such as Delete All Checked Rows, and Move
Checked Rows Up, and Move Checked Rows Down. This way you can modify
many rows with one query and you don't have to reload the page more than
once. You would need to put a little thought into the process in order to
maintain an un-broken sequence (i.e. how to avoid a gap between 5 and 7 when
deleting 6) and so on...

My dilemma goes like this...

- A user Queries the database and gets a set of say 50 to 100 records in a
list. On of the fields retrieved is the SEQUENCE of the record in the list.
- Next the user both inserts new items into and deletes current items from
this list until they are satisfied with the contents of the list.

I can update the database on each insert or deletion, modifying many records
to update the SEQUENCE value of the records. (An obvious Downside is lots of
database activity)

-- OR --

My most current thinking is that stuffing the Query into an Array would be a
good idea... Then I could manipulate the Array, inserting and deleting rows
until a time where the user would commit the Array. (An obvious Downside is
loss of all work done in the session if the App/OrSomethingElse crashes.)

Is this an acceptable practice?

Are there techniques?

What's the view from the Brainiacs on this list?

RE: Using CFMAIL

2001-08-31 Thread Bruce, Rodney

I have done this:

I have entered the other mail server's name and port in the admin.
When I click to verify I get the error that it can not connect.

I have tried both the mail server's name and IP, neither work at this
point.

The CF server is WINNT 4.0, the Mail server is some flavor of Unix, using
SunMail.

CF needs to be configured to use a separate mail server. You set this up in
the administrator under miscellaneous/mail option. In
there you need to enter the mail server (cname or ip address can be used
although ip address is suggested). You also need to set up
the server port (this is 25 by standard). After entering this information
you click on the verify button to verify that the
connection to the mail server can be made by cf.

Once you set this up you should be able to use cfmail.

 Hello all

I hope I can present this question correctly and that I am looking
at the situation from the right angle.

I am trying to use CFMAIL to sent emails from the web site. The
 page itself runs fine.
The part I need help in is, how does CF log on to he web server?
I have entered the web server in CF admin. Get no errors when web
page that generates the mail is run. So unless I am off base, I think
that
the CF server needs an account on the web server. This itself is not a
problem, but how do you get CF to log into the email account?

Even users have to long on separately to their email accounts (after
logging
onto the LAN). Unlike I think most company LANs, when the user signs on,
they get access to their email.

Or am I going about this all wrong.

 Thanks for any help
 Rodney

So Refinding 100 indexed database records is faster/easier/MoreResource Efficient than
CFServer manipulating 100 records stored in an Array. Very Interesting point.

Re: Using CFMAIL

2001-08-31 Thread Howie Hamlin

All the verify does is connect to the mail server, issue an SMTP HELO and QUIT. I
would assume that CF cannot connect to the mail
server at all in that case. Try this:

Open telnet
connect to port 25 of your mail server. Wait for the preamble (some text returned
from the server).

Type in HELO (without the quotes)

Type in QUIT when you are ready to disconnect.

Let me know what happens.

RE: Attributes Scope Variable List

2001-08-31 Thread Shawn Grover

The URL and FORM scopes are structures. I think this applies to all scopes
but can't be sure.

You can use the StructKeyArray(Structure) to return an array of the key
elements in a structure. So, if you feed the function the name of the
scope, you get an array of the variable names.

then doing an loop based on the length of the array, you can find the
values.

Here's a sample for the URL scope that I've come up with:

cfscript
if (len(CGI.Query_String) gt 0)
{
URLArray = StructKeyArray(URL);
for (x = 1; x lt arraylen(URLArray); x = x +1)
{
URL[URLArray[x]] = REReplaceNoCase(URL[URLArray[x]], ['],
chr(96), ALL);
URL[URLArray[x]] = REReplaceNoCase(URL[URLArray[x]],
[^]*, , ALL);
}
}
/cfscript

RE: Efficient Query Manipulation?

2001-08-31 Thread Pete Freitag

Gonzo,

There are cases where building a cached array is more efficient. Mainly
when you want indexed Access to records (basically your not going to output
all your data at once).

So consider the following situation lets say you had a table called
documents that you accessed the following way...
/getDocument.cfm?DocumentID=12 and it would pull the document from the db
with that ID out and display it. If you had a cached query your going to
have to loop through it and find the correct document (or do a query of a
query). It's much faster to access an array element here than perform this
comparison.

Here's how you might build such an array, for this general document example:

put this in application.cfm ...

cflock scope=application type=exclusive timeout=20
cfif NOT IsDefined(application.document)
cfquery datasource=dsn name=doc
SELECT DocumentID, Name, Description, Content
FROM documents
/cfquery

cfset application.document = ArrayNew(1)
cfoutput query=doc
cfscript
application.document[DocumentID] = StructNew();
application.document[DocumentID].Name = doc.Name;
application.document[DocumentID].Description = doc.Description;
application.document[DocumentID].Content = doc.Content;
/cfscript
/cfoutput
/cfif

/cflock

Now to access an element, something like this...

cflock scope=application type=readonly timeout=20
cfoutput#application.document[url.DocmentID].content#/cfoutput
/cflock

Note that if someone types in a DocumentID into the url that is not in the
array an error will be thrown, you need to catch that error. Also do not
use this technique to store large amounts of data, because your server could
run out of RAM.

RE: Configuring CF Server to use Java

2001-08-31 Thread Pete Freitag

Your JRE path needs to be pointing to the JVM library... So on windows its
usually jvm.dll and on unix libjvm.so search for these files on your server
and put the path to one of them.

I am trying to configure my CF Server to use Java objects and it doesn't
recognize my JVM path. Can anyone make any recommendations? The exact error
message I get when I try to instantiate a Java object is:
The JVM library could not be found. Please check if the file specified in
the ColdFusion Administrator actually exists. However, I am pointing my CF
Server to the the JAVA_ROOT/jre/bin directory and my classpath to the only
place in which I have created or to which I have downloaded class files. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Quick format question

2001-08-31 Thread Bryan Love

a number of ways:

it is probably best to do it in the SQL statement if you have a lot of
records,

If you can't do it that way and you still have a lot of records then try
this:

cfoutputcfset foo = insert() ,1234567890,3)
(#insert(-,foo,8)#/cfoutput

The above method is fast, but this one is easier to understand:
(#left(phone,3)#) #mid(phone,4,3)#-#right(phone,4)#

Re: Slightly OT: CF + Generator

2001-08-31 Thread Paul Mone

Simon,

Yes, you absolutley can. Here is a website that we recently did using
ColdFusion and Generator:

http://www.miriellografico.com/

Generator templates can produce dynamic media from datasources. These
datasources can be either a JDBC/ODBC connection or a text file. We used
ColdFusion extensivley in this application to format the data we pull from
SQL Server and produce dynamic text files.. In this case, CF is just acting
as a middle man between the database and Generator. While you can connect
directly to databases with Generator, using a middle-ware scripting language
like CF allows you much more flexibility.

There are two methods of using Generator, online and offline (CF can assist
both methods). When using online Generation, your media is generated at
each request (However, you do have the ability to do some server side
caching of this media). This method works fine for smaller, lower traffic
Generator sites, or components that change very often (stock tickers, etc).

When using offline generation, you produce static copies of the media in
batch. Some larger content management tools do similar operations,
producing static HTML files from the output of CF templates. Offline
Generation is vital for larger sites.

I am under the impression that you can use CF pages to create dynamic
flash pages with Generator. Does anyone know more details about this or have
examples that I could look through?

a number of ways:

it is probably best to do it in the SQL statement if you have a lot of
records,

If you can't do it that way and you still have a lot of records then try
this:

cfoutputcfset foo = insert() ,1234567890,3)
(#insert(-,foo,8)#/cfoutput

The above method is fast, but this one is easier to understand:
(#left(phone,3)#) #mid(phone,4,3)#-#right(phone,4)#

or, do a multiplication with a number like 5. if the result is 0, then

 Cheers

Mulit-User Concurrency

2001-08-31 Thread Gonzo Rock

Sure...

I see, Thanks Pete.
A Cached Array for persistent data which is index pointers so to speak... yep makes
sense.

Ok... NOW, Thinking deeper...

How are people handling Multi-User concurrency issues? How to not overwrite someone
elses changes to a record while pondering how to make your own changes to the
record

IE:
User A reads Record #1.
User B reads record #1.
User B changes fields[3,4,5] in Record #1 and rewrites the entire record.
User A changes fields[7,8,9] in Record #1 and overwrites [3,4,5] with old data just
changed by User B.

In the past I have used the Classic
Lock/ReReadRecord/ModifyMyChangedFieldsOnly/WriteRecord/UnLock scenario to avoid this
via built in tools...

What does CF have built in or in the way of custom tags to help with this?

At 04:01 PM 8/31/01 -0400, you wrote:

   /cfquery

   cfset application.document = ArrayNew(1)
   cfoutput query=doc
   cfscript
   application.document[DocumentID] = StructNew();
   application.document[DocumentID].Name = doc.Name;
   application.document[DocumentID].Description = doc.Description;
   application.document[DocumentID].Content = doc.Content;
   /cfscript
   /cfoutput
/cfif

/cflock

Now to access an element, something like this...

cflock scope=application type=readonly timeout=20
   cfoutput#application.document[url.DocmentID].content#/cfoutput
/cflock

Note that if someone types in a DocumentID into the url that is not in the
array an error will be thrown, you need to catch that error. Also do not
use this technique to store large amounts of data, because your server could
run out of RAM.

Bryan...

Love that you responded... I was beginning to feel invisible on this list
;-)

Umm... Ok You say the DBServer should absorb the load, not the CFServer.

So Refinding 100 indexed database records is faster/easier/MoreResource
Efficient than CFServer manipulating 100 records stored in an Array. Very
Interesting point.

RE the interface:

Thanks for the ideas... not sure what I'll be doing... Currently I have
three submit buttons for each Row now... insert above this row, delete this
row, edit this row. Just want to work out the best way to do this before
going on because it will be central and used heavily in the rest of this
application.

again, thanks for making me not feel so invisible ;)

It is not very efficient to convert query results to an array. The

choose the DB machine every time.

You may also want to modify the interface...

Place a checkbox next to each row containing that row's ID and have
multiple
submit buttons at the bottom such as Delete All Checked Rows, and Move
Checked Rows Up, and Move Checked Rows Down. This way you can modify
many rows with one query and you don't have to reload the page more than
once. You would need to put a little thought into the process in order to
maintain an un-broken sequence (i.e. how to avoid a gap between 5 and 7
when
deleting 6) and so on...
